“When they go low, we go high” Michelle Obama Consensual positive reaction to her convention speech Dr. Garth A. Rose

The Twitter universe was extremely vibrant on Monday night with hundreds of Caribbean-Americans and residents in the Caribbean praising First Lady Michelle Obama scintillating address on the first night of the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia. “In a speech of so many memorable lines, what stood out for me was when she said 'when they go low, we go high.' This stood out for me because it directly referred to the low blows dealt by the Trump campaign against President Obama, Hillary Clinton and the Democratic Party,” Miami-Dade College lecturer Brooklyn Blaise told the National Weekly. “I am a registered voter without party affiliation, but wow! Michelle Obama totally convinced me to vote for the Democratic ticket.” Down in Perrine, Miami-Dade roommates Michael Hilton and Roger Dale, supporters of Bernie Sanders held a small viewing party to witness Sander's convention speech. “We were still holding hope, slim as it was that Bernie would convince some Clinton delegates to vote for him. But after hearing Mrs. Obama's speech, especially when she said after the 2008 campaign when Hillary lost the nomination to Barack Obama, Hillary didn't get angry or disillusioned because she realized the issue was bigger than her own continues on B4 – Michelle Obama

Members of the Caribbean American community in South Florida and across the country are being urged to invest in Little Haiti, as community activists continue the push to preserve the community, that is home to several Haitian immigrants. Following a resolution earlier this year, in which the boundaries of Little Haiti were approved by the Miami City Commission, Marleine Bastien, Executive Director of Fanm Ayisyen nan Miyami (FANM), a Haitian community organisation, said the success story must be continued. “Caribbean Americans need to invest, they need to buy a piece of property, because we cannot let only those from other places buy.

Talk UP What did you think about the Republican National Convention? Tina – Miramar, FL It was excellent. The crowd was electric. I was on the fence, but when I heard what Donald Trump had to say, I was convinced that he would be good for the country. It's going to be different, but it's time for a change. We've done it one way, now it's time to go a different route. I don't think I'll be voting for Donald though. Let the chips fall where they may. Alice – Hollywood, FL I don't agree with a lot of what Trump said. I am Mexican so I was personally offended by his comments about Mexicans. A lot of the labor in this country is provided by Mexicans. I do not vote so I will definitely not be voting for Trump. My approach is to pray for this country and the government. God is the ideal President. He's the best President that we could ever have in our lives. I was also offended when he claimed to be a Christian because he does not carry himself like a follower of Jesus Christ. Lionel – France As a Frenchman, I am nervous about Trump's plan to close the borders. At one time, the French thought that the US was a dangerous place, but the tables have turned and I now think that France is a dangerous place. It is not a safe place to raise children. Lots of French people want to move to the US for a better life. There are many immigrants in France who are creating problems and who paint France in a bad light. We actually need someone like Trump in France to bring change. I support Trump. I just hope that he does not close the borders before honest, hardworking immigrants like myself get a chance to capture a part of the American dream. Ingrid – Pembroke Pines, FL. I did not like it. I think that Donald Trump spent the whole time shouting. He made these big pronouncements, but he did not explain how he was going to get all these things done. He needs to lighten up. I don't know how he is getting the support that he seems to be getting. Melania knowingly plagiarized Michelle Obama's speech. I do not support Trump or the Republican Party. If Trump becomes President, next year we will be purging. Lysette – Hollywood, FL I didn't watch it all, but I was very concerned because Trump is coming on very strong. He is a very strong candidate and we need to unite and stand up for what we believe and for each other. I am from a family of immigrants and I think that everybody deserves a chance. This country was built on the backs of immigrants. I believe that things must be done properly, not by force or by fear. There is good and bad in every culture and race, but it is not right to degrade or demean whole groups of people. Shanice – Pembroke Pines, FL. I didn't watch it, but I saw lots of reviews and clips on Social Media. I found that plagiarism issue with Melania Trump interesting. Also, they definitely should have gotten Queen's permission to use their song. They should have known better. There are some good things about Trump, but there are also lots of things about him and his policies that I don't like. I don't think that I would vote for Trump, but I also don't think that I would vote for Hillary, so right now I'm undecided. Rodney – Miami, FL It went as expected. I didn't expect any more or any less. I was somewhat impressed. I have mixed feelings though about Trump and the Republican Party. I think they would show stronger force against terror than the Democrats have and they would do a better job of keeping our borders safe. However, this whole election process is out of control. There is too much craziness going on. It's nothing like it used to be. As Donald Trump said, the whole world is watching and with all that's been going on, I think we look bad.

St. Kitts PM conducts retreat for cabinet Prime Minister Dr. Timothy Harris of St. Kitts Nevis, says his coalition administration remains “extremely strong” and a weekend retreat allowed for members to openly discuss issues confronting the administration in the twin island Federation. Harris said the retreat conducted by Grenada Prime Minister Dr. Keith Mitchell, the Barbados Opposition Leader Mia Mottley and former St. Vincent and the Grenadines prime minister, Sir James Mitchell, allowed for his cabinet colleagues to “look at the bigger situation (and) how we could advance the quality of life for people of St. Kitts-Nevis. Grenada's Prime Minister Mitchell described the retreat as a “necessity in the construct of governance, particularly the parliamentary system we are adhering to. “As Caribbean people we should always be willing and ready to help as we continue to traverse the path of governance of our individual countries,” he said, noting that his ruling administration had earlier this year benefitted from a retreat conducted by a Trinidad and Tobago national.

Jamaica to take part in clinical trials for Zika treatment Jamaica is to participate in a number of clinical trials in the drive to find a vaccine to treat the mosquito-borne Zika Virus. Health Minister, Dr. Christopher Tufton says the island's participation forms part of an international study and fight against Zika and are being supported by the World Health Organizaton (WHO). Tufton said the vaccine could become available within a year, but in the meantime, more persons and countries will be affected. He said that once the virus gets to its second phase, less people will be affected. Tufton said that Jamaica is among some 65 countries fighting the virus and Jamaicans must appreciate the fact that the virus will continue to spread for a while. “The Zika virus is new and there is no resistance. The immune system has not experienced it and developed the capacity to fight against it. So, when

something is new like Zika, it tends to spread faster until you develop some sort of resistance to it,” he said. Meanwhile, Tufton said the Jamaican government is determined to empower citizens to fight Zika through the free flow of information at all levels, and that once persons

are informed, they will be better able to tackle the virus. “The biggest and most significant line of defence to fight this virus is us,” Tufton said, urging citizens to clean their environment to get rid of the breeding sites of the aedes aegypti mosquito, the carrier of the Zika Virus.

T&T woman wins $150,000 in discrimination case A 31-year-old Muslim woman in Trinidad and Tobago has been awarded TT$150,000 after a Tribunal Court of the Equal Opportunity Commission found that she had been discriminated against by her former employer Quality Security Bodyguard Services Limited. Giselle Glaude was given the award with an interest rate of six per cent per annum from the date of the filing of the complaint to payment. On March 26, 2012, Glaude was dismissed as a security guard for failing to wear the approved uniform. She was accused of modifying the uniform by wearing a hijab shortly after becoming a Muslim on July 9, 2011. The security company said Glaude had violated its uniform code, which said the uniform was approved by the Ministry of National Security. When Glaude refused to comply with instructions not to wear the hijab, the company said it considered her refusal to remove her hijab to be an act of gross misconduct. But Claude told the Commission that the firm's supervisor had given her permission to wear the hijab and on February 27, 2012, Glaude was instructed to write a letter to the Human Resource Department concerning her religion and her need to wear the hijab. On March 5, 2012, she was told if she continued to wear the hijab on duty, which

conflicted with the uniform code, she would have to make other arrangements regarding her employment. Ten days later Claude was served a “notice of intended action” for gross misconduct. On March 22, 2012, she attended a disciplinary hearing, after which she was informed that she was found guilty of the charge and was terminated. The formal termination letter was dated March 26, 2012. In delivering his judgment yesterday, the Tribunal Judge/Chairman Rajmanlal Joseph, said there was not one scintilla of evidence offered by the security company to suggest that any efforts were made to get any sort of clarification from the Ministry of National Security that wearing the hijab with the approved uniform would be unacceptable. “To be sure, the respondent did not offer to the tribunal any evidence, oral or written, to the effect that the uniform that was said to be approved by the Ministry of National Security was in fact so approved,” it ruled. It said it appeared that the haste with which the disciplinary machine was engineered and the fact that the company utterly failed to advise Glaude of her right to appeal the termination decision, it was highly suggestive the company wanted to get rid of Glaude for adopting the Muslim faith.

NATIONAL WEEKLY | THURSDAY, JUL 28 – AUG 3, 2016 | VOL. 13 NO. 30 –

Political candidates with Obama's integrity are rare I t's very interesting that as Americans look on with amazement at the slow unraveling of what was once a formidable political system, people of various political backgrounds are bemoaning the pending end of Barack Obama's political journey. Increasingly, Americans are disgusted, frustrated and disappointed with the frequent negatives that are associated with both the perspectives of the presidential campaigns as Election Day approaches. Indicative of this frustration are recent national polls showing some 30 percent of the national electorate either undecided if they'll vote in November; or what party or presidential candidate they'll vote for. It's surprising that several Americans who were opposed to Obama's 2008 election, and his 2012 reelection, are now touting Obama's “high level of integrity” as a former candidate and as president. “Today's candidates are plagued by accusations and allegations of impropriety that weren't even considered against Obama during his two election campaigns, and his presidency,” commented a regular Republican Party supporter on national TV last Sunday. Another commentator believed it wasn't surprising the Republicans resorted to using excerpts of Michelle Obama's 2008 Democratic National Convention speech in Melania Trump's controversial speech at the recent RNC in Cleveland. “Obama's campaigns were textbook examples of wellcoordinated, unified, political campaigns. It wouldn't be surprising if the Trump campaign isn't secretly

focused on revisiting aspects of Obama's campaigns.” There's little doubt that Obama's campaigns, particularly his 2008 election, was characterized by his and his family's, personal integrity. Despite the aggressive exploration by his opponents to find dirt on it from Chicago, his hometown; Hawaii, his birth state; Indonesia, where he once lived; and even in Kenya, birthplace of his father, nothing of consequence was found. Neither has anything of significance been found in Obama's tenure as president since 2008, despite persistent attempts by his opponents. Cynics argue that Obama's flawless public political profile hasn't really assisted him during his presidency. They claim It certainly hasn't helped him in getting immigration reform passed, or stilled the opposition's arguments to repeal the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare). It's also argued there were recognized character flaws in some former presidents, but these flaws did not dilute the effectiveness of their presidency or their presidential legacy. Since 1960, for example, President John Kennedy has often been portrayed as a serial adulterer; President Richard Nixon as a “trickster,” forced into resigning because of dishonesty related to the Watergate break-in; President Ronald Reagan was criticized for not being always aware of what was going on during his presidency, exemplified in the Nicaragua Contra Deal debacle in his second term; and President Bill Clinton may be forever tainted by the Monica Lewinsky scandal.

However, it must be questioned whether Americans really respect men who maintain their integrity while in office. Like Obama, President Jimmy Carter was a president of high integrity. During his four year term he consistently faced strong opposition, and has often been labelled as a weak president. His popularity is more associated with his national and international altruistic work after his presidency. Meanwhile, the prying and revealing nature of social media has increased the challenges faced by those seeking political office at all levels. Today, the smallest flaw in a candidate's character can be blown up through social media to severely challenge his/her campaign. Now, what voters are faced with is to look past the character flaws, real or orchestrated, of candidates to determine who has the best potential to meet their social and economic needs. It may be decades before another presidential candidate of high integrity emerges but, nonetheless, while most people rather their religious and political leaders be individuals of flawless characters, history has borne out that flawed leaders can still be very effective. There is another month leading to the August 30th primary elections, and three months to the November 8th general elections. During this time, more flaws may be pinned on those seeking political office, but it is also a sufficient time for voters to reason who is best suitable to lead.

LA SECTION HAITIENNE

Haiti elections nally underway This past Wednesday, at a special meeting of the Permanent Council held at the Organization of American States (OAS) headquarters, the Haitian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Pierrot Delienne, got a chance to provide the OAS with “a better understanding of the evolving political and electoral situation” in his country. The request came in the wake of a statement on July 15 by OAS Secretary General Luis Almagro, expressing concern over inability of Haitian parliamentarians to meet in the National Assembly, and to finally make a decision on how to guarantee institutional stability for the country and encourage the continuation of the electoral process. “Given the importance of the challenges and the serious risks to the country's stability, it is particularly troubling that the meeting of the National Assembly set for yesterday, July 14, was cancelled, once again, due to a failure to reach quorum,” Almagro

said in his statement. Officials are reporting that the country has asked for some assistance from the Dominican Republic in order to carry out the October 6 elections in light of the United States refusing to continue supporting the electoral campaign. However, Centro Bonó think tank director, Felix Roque, said the best thing for Dominicans is not to get involved and let international

organizations handle that process instead. "There's a lot of suspicion about elections between Haiti and the Dominican Republic,” Roque said, noting that it's advisable that the Dominican State keeps its distance with political events in Port-au-Prince. Roque also noted that if the Dominican government could offer some technical and technological support, it should do so through inter-American and regional bodies. "With great care and tact so it cannot be said that there's some kind of meddling, I think bilateral relations have to be cared for and that's a very sensitive issue.” During his address at Wednesday's special meeting, Delienne spoke on the “significant progress that has been made” noting that the process for an election is now solidly on track. With the order that has required the country's 5.8 million voters to report to the polls on October 9 in order to finally reach a decision for electing a new president, he may be right. Among other things, he revealed that there are 27 presidential candidates representing all the major parties with the second round of voting to be held on January 8, 2017, if necessary.

“Only Idiots would say 'Why do Black Lives Matter?'” - Wycleaf Jean Tensions in the nation have been on high alert as the topic of “Black Lives Matter” has been thrust against an “All Lives Matter” campaign in some communities. Among the celebrities who have chosen to speak on the topic of the importance of saving black lives, the always outspoken Haitian-born musician and three-time Grammy Award winner, Wyclef Jean has decided to let his own voice be heard. “Only idiots would be saying, ‘Why do black lives matter?’” he told reporters. “The reason why black lives matter is because you can’t keep executing black people in broad daylight and it’s

on video and you get away with it.” Following the shootings of two unarmed black men and officers in Dallas, residents throughout the Unites States, and locally in South Florida took to the streets to peacefully protest the tragedy. However, it wasn't until the shooting of an unarmed black behavioral therapist by a North Miami police officer, did the reality of what has been happening nationwide finally resound with some Florida residents, adding fuel to the fire concerning a plight of mutual concern across African Americans regarding racial discrimination of Black people in the United States. Jean, who attempted to run for president of Haiti in 2010, says the heavily populated urban

Wyclef Jean

areas in the United States suffer the most because of bad policy. Suggesting that the next president of the United States focus on action rather than talk, Wycleaf believes in platforms that have been demonstrated by the first

women in history, to lead a presidential ticket. “I don’t think that politics is personal, I just think that within the situation for the country, I really feel that gearing towards Hillary Clinton is going to be the much better pick,” he said. In regards to the Haitian presidential election set to take place on October 9, the international hip hop singer took to twitter in June, announcing Jude Célestin had his vote to be the next President. The candidate then responded by thanking Wycleaf for his endorsement for his vision of a prosperous Haiti where opportunities will be available to all.

The state of the CPL in the US This year the CPL will break new ground as six matches will be played in Central Broward Stadium, Fort Lauderdale which will mark the sport's first professional foray into mainland USA. The Hero CPL 2016 which got underway June 29 and runs through August 7 at venues across seven territories - Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, Trinidad and Tobago and now Lauderhill, Florida. The league is a franchise-based T20 format cricket tournament that combines two of the most compelling aspects of Caribbean

life – dramatic cricket and a vibrant Carnival atmosphere. Last year's tournament attracted a global audience in excess of 90 million and this year is set to be even higher as fans across the world continue to be drawn to the excitement generated in the short form of the game. announced it is unlikely that this week's games will be the last time that the CPL features at Lauderhill. "We have invested well over a million dollars in coming to Florida. The stadium is great but to bring it up to international standard with the screens, the lights and the hospitality areas, we have had to invest," said CPL chief executive Damien O'Donohoe. "We are bringing that Caribbean flavor and feel and it is going to be very special atmospheres come Saturday and Sunday," he added. "There are lots of hoops you have to jump through but if you look at the way America embraces its sport, having a local franchise here makes a lot of sense," CPL's chief operating officer Pete Russell said in speaking about the possibilities of a US franchise in an AFP report. "It ties you into the local community and makes it a lot more relevant. That would make a lot of sense. There is no issue with putting it into our schedule. But its one step at a time we have to see how these games go, but so far, so good," he said. Some prospective investors in the league have already shown interest in a US franchise, said Russell. "A lot of potential owners have talked to us about it (but) we are mindful of the politics involved here and also in terms of cricket generally. We wouldn't be so presumptuous as to say 'We are having a franchise here' - there are a lot of things you have to consider before you do that. We have had preliminary conversations but no more than saying 'Wouldn't it be a good idea in the future'," he added. South Florida officials, including Broward Commissioner Dale Holness and City of Lauderhill Mayor Richard Kaplan are also optimistic about the benefits, the county, city, and region can gain from the sport of cricket. In an interview with the Caribbean National Weekly Commissioner Holness said, “one of his visions when the Regional Park opened in 2007, was for it to be the site for international cricket in South Florida and the USA.” This vision was partially fulfilled when New Zealand and the West Indies played there in 2012. He said, “That game was a huge success, earning the city some $4 million dollars, and benefitting several businesses like hotels and restaurants.” Early in 2013 he and cricket enthusiasts including legendary WI cricketer Lance Gibbs and local players Jeff Miller and Al Tucker travelled to the St. Lucia for meetings with the WI Cricket Board and organizers of the newly found Caribbean Premier League (CPL) presenting the Regional Park as ideal for international T20 games. “South Florida offers strong incentives for West Indies cricket. The region provides a natural market consisting of cricket fans from over 22 countries; the park is a first class cricket facility; there are three international airports; several first class hotels; top-notch customer service; and incentives for attractive ticket sales.” Holness said earlier this year CPL officials visited South Florida for meetings with local officials, including the Mayor of Lauderhill. The meetings resulted in the games being played this weekend. He said he's confident this weekend’s games will “possibly double the revenue” the city realized from the 2012 New Zealand/WI series, “and will provide much needed jobs to the unemployed.” Also speaking to the Caribbean National Weekly Mayor Kaplan praised all those who were involved in the planning for the CPL games. “This was total team work,” Kaplan said. Kaplan is very optimistic of the economic benefit the games will bring to the city. He too wants to see more international cricket played at the Regional Park. “Cricket played at the park promotes Lauderhill to millions of people worldwide.” He also cited the city's infrastructure of hotels, restaurants and other businesses as ideal incentives for more international games. Kaplan hinted that plans for another major international game are in the works for the Regional Park. “If these plans materialize, this game could be announced this weekend. It could be the biggest international game played at the park.”

Major teams New Zealand, Brisbane Heat, Canterbury, Chennai Super Kings, Glamorgan, Gujarat Lions, Kochi Tuskers Kerala, Kolkata Knight Riders, New South Wales, Otago, Sussex, Trinbago Knight Riders, Warwickshire Brash, brutal and brilliant to watch, Brendon McCullum can bruise bowling attacks like few other men in international cricket. A wicketkeeper-batsman, McCullum has been used throughout the New Zealand batting order, but whenever he arrives at the crease it's impossible to look away. He muscles balls over both sides of the eld and was responsible for getting the IPL off to an electrifying start, lighting up the tournament's rst match with 158 and showing what the format had to offer. And he reprised that style in Tests too striking the fastest century in the format's history in his nal match.

Kieron Pollard

Sunil Narine, a mystery spinner, caught the West Indies selectors' attention by taking all ten wickets in a trial match and received a call up to the Trinidad & Tobago squad in January 2009. He may not have accomplished that in international cricket , but every time Narine came to bowl, he looked like taking a wicket. His bag of tricks - an assortment of carrom balls, knuckle balls and skidders - led West Indies to the World T20 title in 2012 - the rst time they claimed a World trophy since 1979.

Mumbai Indians weren't paying $750,000 (plus an undisclosed amount to break a tie with three other franchises) for Pollard's international record; they were shelling out all that money for the fearsome hitting power he had shown in domestic T20 action most notably while smashing 54 off 18 balls for T&T against New South Wales during the 2009 Champions League T20.

New York has unveiled new safety measures ahead of the traditional West Indian- 10 How Mi Grow Vybz Kartel American J' Ouvert festivities in Brooklyn on Labour Day, the first Monday in September. 11 Roast or Fry Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams Chi Ching Ching and New York City Police Department (NYPD) Commissioner William J. Bratton, were among city officials that unveiled “WeAreJOuvert,” a campaign comprising public safety and community outreach efforts to be undertaken by a coalition of local stakeholders. The Brooklyn-based J'Ouvert City International President, Trinidadian Yvette Rennie, said 'as keepers of a culture that is grounded in artistic expression and national pride that we brought with us from the Caribbean, we must continue to celebrate in a safe environment. “To gangs in our community, we say 'put down the guns.' Brooklyn comes to life with our culture,” he added. Adams said that the changes prioritize the safety of residents and revellers alike during the popular celebration of Caribbean culture. “Public safety is an all-in commitment, a partnership between community and police to advance the quality of life in our neighbourhoods and ensure we have safe spaces to celebrate our cultural pride,” he said. “I look forward to seeing our city come together in the weeks ahead to raise up the Caribbean spirit that enlivens Brooklyn every summer. Equally important, I ask all Brooklynites to stand with the NYPD and community advocates that are working to advance peace in our streets, rooting out violence from every corner of our borough,” he added. Bratton said the “NYPD is committed to ensuring public safety at this very well-attended cultural celebration, which will be reflected in the Departmental resources…that will be deployed.”

neighborhood. According to Bastien, as developers continue to acquire most of the space in Little Haiti, it is hoped that the campaign will reverse this trend. The campaign is focused on four major issues: encouraging homeowners to know their rights; plans to organize a community land trust; organizing a home owners' and renters association, and a Keep Little Haiti Clean campaign. While Little Haiti's designation is arguably one of the most controversial in the history of

Miami, Bastien is determined to keep the focus on the community . “People come from all over the world to see Little Haiti. This is a success story for all of us in the Americas to show that when we come here, we come with a purpose, we do whatever it takes to succeed in this melting pot.” Her sentiments were echoed by Gepsie Metellus, the Executive Director of Sant La the Haitian Neighborhood Center, who also believes that several hurdles still need to be cleared. “We want to ensure that those who remain (in Little Haiti) are given opportunities - this is a highly desirable area at this

point in time in Miami – but improvements can be made to avoid the displacement of long time residents. Concerning investment opportunities, Metellus said Haitians and other Caribbean nationals could play a vital role in revitalizing

the area. “I know that we are working very closely with the City of Miami and we are looking at ways to work with other community stakeholders to revitalize the area financially to retain what is attractive and at the same time protect those who live there.” For several years, Little Haiti, known mainly as a haven for immigrants and refugees from the French speaking Caribbean nation, was not officially recognized by city officials. However that changed when on May 26, 2016, commissioners voted unanimously to designate Little Haiti as a neighborhood in the city - a decision-which according to Bastien “No one can come and erase.”

Caribbean-American Democrats urged Wasserman-Schultz to step down Caribbean-American Democrats in South Florida on Monday went into urgent damage control to ensure unity prevailed at the Democratic Party Convention in Philadelphia. Following the Wikileaks revelation of controversial emails suggesting a bias towards Hillary Clinton by the Democratic National Committee, US Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman-Schultz of South Florida was forced to resign as the DNC chairwoman, effective at the end of the convention. She nonetheless planned to preside over that assembly. On Monday morning Wasserman-Schultz attempted to address the Florida delegation attending the convention, but was heckled by

Bernie Sanders supporters, and had to be escorted from the room. This prompted some Democrats in South Florida to urge WassermanSchultz not to participate in the convention. Clinton supporter and local Attorney Dahlia Walker-Huntington took to the internet making a personal plea for all concerned Democrats to contact the congresswoman's Pembroke Pines office “to respectfully suggest that she not address/speak to the Convention in Philadelphia.” Walker-Huntington said “as a Democrat I am upset with the timing of the release of the WikiLeaks emails hacked from the Democratic National Committee. These emails paint Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz in a

Wasserman-Schultz

poor light and is overshadowing the Democratic National Convention...The emails are also affecting party unity. While I have known the congresswoman for years and admire and support her, I think she needs to step down now as party chair.” The concern of Walker-Huntington and other Democrats was since Wasserman-Schultz was rejected by the Florida Delegation, things could get worse if she appeared before the entire convention “where a good 30-40 percent of attendees are Senator Sanders supporters.” By noon on Monday it was announced Wasserman-Schultz would not preside. The convention was called to order by Mayor of Baltimore Stephanie Rawlings Blake, the secretary of the convention. Meanwhile popular CNN commentator and former campaign manager for Democratic presidential candidate Al Gore was named interim chairwoman of the DNC. Wasserman-Schultz was appointed DNC chairwoman by President Obama five years ago. She has previously come under criticism from the Sanders' campaign of being partial to his rival Hillary Clinton, but she publicly refuted these criticisms. She has been regarded, since 2008 when Clinton and Obama contested the Democratic Party presidential nomination to be a Clinton supporter. The congresswoman faces a challenge from Democrat Tim Canova for Florida's 23rd Congressional District 23 seat in the US House of Representative which encompasses portions of St. Lucie, Martin, Palm Beach and Broward Counties, in the August 30 primary elections. She has represented the district since November 2012, and previously represented District 20 in Congress from 2005. Wasserman seemed fired up in retaining her seat, reacting to the heckling at the Florida delegation breakfast on Monday. Before leaving the podium she defiantly pledged, “You will see me every day until November 8th on the campaign trail.” If she gets past the primary election she faces either Republicans Martin Feignbaum or Joseph Kaufman in the general elections.

Michelle Obama desires. This made me realize the overall movement of the Democratic Party is bigger than the Sanders movement, and we need to come together to win in November.” Miami civil rights veteran activist and Liberty City resident, Latrecia Moses, told National Weekly on Tuesday morning she was so moved by Michelle Obama's speech, “I couldn't sleep last night after hearing her.” Moses said, she wonders how many black people, especially “young black people”

from A1

realize the significance of Michelle's words when referring to the White House. She said she now “wakes up every day in a house built by slaves” and watch her two girls play on the lawns of the White House. “Lord, oh dear Lord, those were powerful words, as it vividly portrays the journey of the American black race from the slavery plantations to the pinnacle of authority in this country. But still we have a long road to travel because every day there are forces that seek to knock us off the pinnacles we have reached.” On Twitter during and

MARKETPLACE

after Mrs. Obama's speech, tweets flooded social media from across the globe, with several from recognized personalities in Jamaica. One of the more memorable tweets from one such personality read “Michelle commands the divided hall like a modern day messiah.” This tweet was remarkably relevant, as before Mrs. Obama's speech, there was a demonstrated division between supporters of Bernie Sanders, most of whom, were riled over reports of emails leaked by Wikileaks suggesting the Democratic National Committee favored Hillary Clinton over

Sanders as the Democratic candidate for the primary elections. While Bernie supporters booed and heckled some speakers when they mentioned Clinton's name, there was no such dissension or disturbance, but rather rapt attention during Mrs. Obama's speech. Another memorable tweet originating from Jamaica read “Barack is good, but he's now the second best speaker in the Obama family.” .

FTL Strikers leave Lockhart Stadium The Strikers’ new home will be Central Broward Stadium The Fort Lauderdale Strikers are leaving their home stadium at Lockhart Stadium to relocate to the Central Broward Regional Park in Lauderhill. The field that the team has called home for nearly 40 years is going to be taken over by a private company using the field as a water park which has brought on some concern from Rapids Water park in Riviera Beach. The Strikers will play their last game at the park July 30 against the Jacksonville Armada and

debut at the Lauderhill sports park on August 20, when they host Ottawa Fury FC. The Strikers, whose lease at Lockhart runs until December 31, say the move is necessary due to the neglect of major improvements needed at the field. Since 2015, members say it has made only minor improvements to Lockhart, including a video board, upgrading the press box and the PA system and renovating seating areas. Team players sat that the field and attached buildings needed major work done to the core of the building including new locker rooms, a stadium roof, and

repairing the concrete structure itself. The remote 57-year-old venue may have seemed unnecessary with the prospect of a $70million Schlitterbahn Water Park proposed for the 64 acres of city-owned land. The Schlitterbahn master plan includes revamping Lockhart into a state-of-the-art venue. The Strikers would sublease the stadium from the water park operator, meanwhile, using the Lauderhill location as a home. The Schlitterbahn proposal presented to the city has two phases. The focus of the first phase is building the water park and $40-

million hotel lodgings. Once those are complete, which is expected to take two years, plans for a possible Phase Two sports park would redevelop the surrounding property adjacent to the Fort Lauderdale Executive Airpark into four public soccer fields. The Strikers have used Central Broward Stadium as a training facilities since January and now they will use it as a more permanent fixture adding to the hype of the Caribbean Premier League matches scheduled to take place this weekend.

Knight-Wisdom makes history as irst Jamaican Olympic male diver Yona Knight-Wisdom, Jamaican diver, makes his Olympic debut by making history. The 21 year old is the first Jamaican male to enter the games held in Rio de Janeiro next month. His weight, 198 lbs, is what he and other speculators believe allows him to reach a higher point from the springboard and create harder dives letting gravity aid him. “My advantage is that I'm able to get a really clean entry into the water, so I make

Knight-Wisdom

very little splash,” said Knight-Wisdom, who competes in the individual 3m springboard event. “I'm just aiming to keep it really, really simple and just try to get the most consistent performance, because I feel like people will make mistakes.” Sponsored by British-Jamaican musician Levi Roots, he chose to represent Jamaica after struggling to get into the British diving team; Jamaica has only had one other Olympic diver, Betsy Sullivan, who was in the 1972 Games in Munich. Knight-Wisdom is not letting the moment

and opportunity pass him by, he says his main goal is to enjoy the occasion, admitting, his presence holds greater significance in breaking down stereotypes about divers. “Some people do still get shocked when I say I'm a diver. To see an African-American diver kind of at the top level in this sport, there's very few of us,” he said. Knight-Wisdom, attending Leeds Beckett University, believes that he can influence and inspire other who don't think that this is for them or that the market isn't big enough or want to branch out and try different things.
