LGBT Community Still Haunts Sizzla Controversial Jamaican artiste Sizzla Kalonji will not be performing in northern California next month as gay rights activists objected to the planned event. Sizzla Kalonji

By Kathy Barrett

Sizzla, whose real name is Miguel Orlando Collins, is well known for his stance against homosexuality, and has in the past come under attack for his anti-gay lyrics. This time around, the artiste was scheduled to perform at the popular Reggae on the River show, hosted by the Mateel Community Centre in northern California. However according to reports board members cancelled the July 13 concert due to financial constraints. But in response to news of the cancellation, gay rights advocates have lauded the decision, stating that the board of Mateel “listened to our community”. “We really appreciate the board of

Larson has been quoted as saying that the board of directors at the Mateel Community Center is aware of the artiste's reputation.

The popular Reggae on the River show has been hosted by the community center for several years. The Mateel Community Center, is known for booking anti-gay performers in the face of public opposition. In 2016, Reggae on the River, was headlined by Sizzla, and this marked his first performance in the United States since 2008, when his visa and work permit were revoked. Sizzla's anti-gay lyrics have been the source of controversy that has led to canceled concerts worldwide. The dancehall artiste is among a handful for performers to be called out by the ‘Stop Murder Music’ campaign for prompting “violence” against members of the LGBT community.

Receives Prestigious Fulbright Research Fellowship As part of his thesis, he produced and directed “Sincerely, The Black Kids,” a documentary on racism in academia depicting the challenges black student government leaders experience nationwide. The film features interviews with student leaders from Cornell, Clemson and other American University who, though exceptionally talented as campus leaders, unfortunately find themselves combatting the same racism in their institutions that they were told did not exist anymore. ‘The Black Kids,’ which was also produced by Shakira Refos with videographer/editor Eduardo Correa, was recognized on ABC7 Sarasota - WWSB's SuncoastView on May 24, 2018, where Iton was hosted by Nikki LoganCurran and Joey Panek in an in-depth television interview with the crew. ‘Sincerely, the Black Kids’ is currently in post-production and will be promoted on the national film festival scene soon.

Miles Iton, the son of Jamaican-American Jacqueline Lewis-Ortiz of Florida and Vincentian Wain Iton of Trinidad, is the 2018 recipient of a prestigious Fulbright Research Fellowship to Taiwan. Iton will study in the creative industry design master's program at National Cheng Kung University in Tainan, which offers an arts administration curriculum applicable in fields including publishing and marketing. He hopes the Fulbright year will let him begin developing a program where higher education could be a bridge for creative students to enter the entertainment field. Iton hopes an academic grounding in the composition and social influence of music would help students become a next generation of informed performers or businesspeople. He also aims to prepare a business plan for his n.e.Bodied Entertainment imprint, and to prepare for law school and the study of intellectual property and entertainment law. While in Taiwan, Iton plans to become involved in the region's music scene, host concerts and launch a web series on being a black American studying in Asia. “I look to involve myself in activities that will build bridges of understanding between Taiwan/Cheng Kung and the international black experience,” he said. “I see an excellent opportunity to engender a creative field capable of facilitating a fairly rare interplay between dialects in Mandarin and African American Vernacular English.” A burgeoning entrepreneur who has fused academics and entertainment while encouraging diversity and tolerance at the New

College of Florida, Iton is the co-founder of the college's Black Student Union and also served as co-president of the student government during his 2016-17 term. A philosophy AOC, he excelled in the classroom, developing a series of courses on hip-hop composition and cultural education that drew praise from his faculty advisors. He successfully defended his senior thesis “Cultural Gentrification: Hip Hop and Racial Epistemologies in the United States,” on Apr. 24th.

Barbados Calls In The IMF Fresh from a landslide election victory, new Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley, has called in the International Monetary Fund, (IMF). IMF officials say it will be sending a delegation led by Bert van Selm to Barbados to assist the island in plans for revitalizing the ailing economy as Mottley has already indicated her administration would not be averse to seeking support from the Washington-based financial institution.

Lagarde

IMF managing director, Christine Lagarde, quoted Mottley as saying the Barbados economy has been going through significant challenges for some years. “The authorities are developing an economic reform plan designed to address these challenges, and they have asked the international community and the International Monetary Fund to assist them as they put the economy back on a path to recovery,” she was quoted as saying. “Our ultimate goal is to help Barbados achieve higher living standards and more inclusive growth for the years ahead.” Last Friday, Mottley, announced that her new administration would suspend payments due to domestic and external creditors.

Caribbean Urged To Act More On Terrorism Caribbean border security officials have been urged to collaborate more in the fight against cross border illegal activities, including terrorism. Minister of State in the Jamaican Ministry of National Security, Rudyard Spencer, issued the charge to delegates at the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Joint Standing Committees of Chiefs of Immigration and Comptrollers of Customs (CICC) in Kingston last week. Spencer said in an age of terrorism, cybercrime and organized criminal networks, CARICOM continues to face rising levels of crime. “Gang warfare in the never-ending battle for control of scarce resources continues to tear apart the social fabric of our communities and countries and destroy the lives of so many of our young people,” he said while urging the chiefs of immigration and comptrollers of customs to continue promoting the rejection of corruption in the forms of illegal drug trade, trafficking of firearms, identity theft and data breaches, among their nationals they have employed, and citizens.

Search Continues For Bodies Swept Out At Sea The bodies of two people were recovered on Monday, but the search is continuing for two others, who were swept out to sea while on a beach in south east of St. Vincent and the Grenadines on Sunday, nearly one year after six people in a speedboat traveling from Canouan to Mustique disappeared without a trace. Neither the boat nor its occupants have ever been found and in Sunday’s mishap Curtley Daniel, 29, his 10-year-old nephew, Jevorn Junior Phillip, along with 13-year-old

Jonathan Welcome, and 10-year-old Isaiah Shallow, were swept out to sea while bathing at Breakers, which is notorious for its unpredictable and dangerous currents. Civilian divers, who turned out to support the efforts of the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Coast Guard, recovered the bodies of Welcome and Daniel. Jevorn Phillip, father of the missing boy said the four were playing in the water when a waves came suddenly and “wrapped them up.”

The younger of Phillip’s sons and at least one other child were saved, reportedly when an adult instructed them to swim towards her, then snatched them from the water. Phillip said he was not at home on Sunday when his brother took the children to the beach. The search is continuing for the other two missing people, with swimmers ignoring an uprooted Coast Guard sign warning of “Dangerous and Unpredictable Underwater Currents. Swimming not recommended.”

Do you think America has become more racist? If so, do you think it will change? Rachel, Ft Lauderdale, FL “I personally believe racism is complicated and has an individual aspect of prejudice. But even worse is the reality that generations of racist attitudes are now woven into our systems and institutions like poisonous threads, hurting us all. When our election laws begin again to systematically make it harder for African-Americans to vote; when police forces protect and defend some people less than others and are not held accountable; when schools and jobs are routinely of lower quality in areas where people of color live; and when white people don't know or care, then we have a system that perpetuates racism whether the people in it intend to be racist or not.” Jake, Pompano, FL “In America today, every group feels 'attacked' in some way to some extent. Racism is a huge issue in today's society and unfortunately, I don't think it's going to get better. I think racism has been a huge issue among Americans and having Trump in office just motivated other racists to act on their feelings towards another race. It's like everyone is racist in some way these days. People are racist to white people, black people and Hispanics. No one is safe anymore with all this crime, and all current events and situations that have been happening, have all been acts of racism.”

Ebony, Pembroke Pines, FL “Yes, America has absolutely gotten more racist! We can't even say 'Black Lives Matter' without people trying to change it to 'All Lives Matter.' Of course, all lives matter but are all lives being killed in police custody? When a white kid shoots up a school he is hand cuffed and fully alive and gets a full chance in court but a colored person in a wheel chair gets shot to death by police? It's crazy and completely unfair that people of color automatically get more harsh treatment regardless of what they did or didn't do. It needs to stop, and I pray that one day it does but I lose hope every time I see another 'killed by cops' story.”

EDB FINANCIAL SERVICES S

Chris, Miramar, FL “If comparing American society now to back in the 1800's, then I would have to say it's better now. However, if comparing it back from about 5-6 years ago when Obama was in office, I would have to say it has gotten way worst now. Governments have endorsed the extermination - ethnic cleansing - of entire classes or races of people. Racism is devastating to a country and its culture. Racism causes tremendous moral, cultural, and economic suffering to a country. When the seeds of hatred and ethnocentrism are planted and fostered in society, it negatively affects every area of life.”

L SE

E

Kate, Boston, MA “Racism is more than what is in the heart of an individual person at the moment of a particular act. Racism is the cumulative history of all those thoughts and acts. They add up to a pattern in which people of color are routinely and systematically treated differently than white people. For example, I was at the hospital early last year and in the emergency room I actually heard a lady complain that her nurse was black and requested a new nurse! This is the America we live in and it is just so sad.' You also have the instances where anyone who isn't white is scared to call the police even when in need of help because they aren't sure if there life will be at stake.”

Shanice, Pembroke Pines, FL “Yes, America is very racist. I've done a lot of research on racism and I was shocked by how frequently people make racist searches, particularly for jokes mocking African-Americans. This concealed ugliness can predict a lot of behaviors, particularly in the political realm. We can only hope for change, and honestly, even if we do ever get change, how long will it honestly last? Martin Luther King died fighting for equality; we have a celebrated day for him and yet still we have major race issues in our society today. I don't think we ever will. The many hate crimes we see reported on a day-to-day basis diminishes any hope of positive change.”

ANC

Emily, Miami, FL “The American society has definitely become much more racist. Donald Trump's appeals to working-class white Americans have no doubt stoked racial tensions. I don't think it's going to get better. When blacks blame today's whites for slavery or ask for reparations, many white Americans feel as though they are being attacked for the sins of other generations. I don't know if the situation will ever get better, but I can only hope it does.”

A6 – NATIONAL WEEKLY

| THURSDAY, JUN 6 – JUN 13, 2018 | VOL. 15 NO. 23

Caribbean-Americans Have More To Accomplish Since 2006, June has been proclaimed as National Caribbean-American Heritage Month, highlighting the strong ties between Caribbean migrants and American history. Unfortunately, the significance of this history is relatively unknown by a preponderance of Caribbean-Americans, and hardly recognized by the average American.

Dating back to the 17th Century, when slaves were brought to the US from Barbados, people of Caribbean origins have been making significant contributions to America's history. Individuals from the Caribbean have contributed to various areas of American life, having excelled as inventors, educators, business people, cultural and sports icons, politicians and civil rights activists. Caribbean nationals didn't arrive in America simply to “drink milk” or “milk the cow.” No way! Most wanted to share in the ownership of that proverbial cow. Most Caribbean migrants didn't come to America to make “quick money” then return to their respective Caribbean homelands. Rather, they saw and seized opportunities to place their stamp on America, their adopted country. Very few, if any Caribbean nationals, were content to retreat to the back of the bus, heading to an inferior, segregated, humiliating destination, away from a 'superior' white race. Caribbean people do not regard themselves inferior to anyone, a fact misunderstood by some African-Americans who, unfortunately, endured years of racist humiliation. This misunderstanding has resulted in the occasional criticism of Caribbean

migrants as “uppity” Blacks. But it isn't that Caribbean migrants regarded themselves as better than other Blacks. Caribbean-Americans are just not content to be taken as inferior. And, Caribbean-Americans, like Marcus Garvey, tried to show the entire Black race that “it” was in fact a “superior race.” Maybe, even President Trump, in paying tribute to Caribbean-Americans in his recent proclamation of National Caribbean-American Heritage month, did not fully understand the uniqueness of Caribbean immigrants, and the contributions they have made to this country. Neither did his predecessors. Because the contribution of Caribbean-Americans is still not fully understood or appreciated. If this was understood, there would be no-way that the over 7 million people of Caribbean heritage in this county would still be striving to be given their own recognition with their own identity category one US Census forms. It can only be hoped that as another National Caribbean-American Heritage Month is commemorated, the full worth and significance of the Caribbean migrant will be recognized and appreciated. However, for most of the millions of CaribbeanAmericans who, along with their ancestors, have played major roles in the development of several aspects of the American society, there's still much to be accomplished in America. They're still seeking to be recognized as an autonomous ethnic group in American society. They, rightly, seek the same recognition given to immigrants of other ethnic origins, like Hispanics and Jews. Caribbean-Americans are not content be considered as just Black Americans; though they are.

They want to be considered a separate influential political constituency, a formidable business community, and people with a distinctive culture. CaribbeanAmericans want, and should be recognized unconditionally, as an autonomous American ethnic community period! People of Caribbean heritage should take advantage of this month to educate America of the impact they have made on this country since the 17th century and continue to do. Caribbean migrants must continue relentlessly to carve out their indelible niche in American society, never losing their uniqueness. They cannot be content with the selfish goal of coming to America to “seek better lives” materially. Outstanding men and woman like Shirley Chisholm, Colin Powell, Sydney Poitier, Malcom X, Claude McKay, Tim Duncan, Madge Sinclair, Kamala Harris, Una and Yvette Clark, Hazelle Rogers and Yolly Roberson, who are icons of Caribbean-American heritage, sought to make their and other communities better. They ensured the Caribbean influence was integrated firmly within the American way of life. The work is far from over. As a people, a community, Caribbean-Americans still haven't been given their rightful place in the American society. One month of commemoration cannot be the objective. American history is resplendent with the contribution of Caribbean migrants, and, CaribbeanAmericans must continue to strive for permanent recognition, in the US Census, in American legislatures, in the general society.

LA SECTION HAITIENNE

Taiwan And Haiti Sign Bilateral Agreement Haiti is staying true to its relationship with Taiwan. The two sides recently signed a new agreement aimed at further strengthening their bilateral relationship following a visit by President Jovenel Moise. President Tsai Ing-wen and the Moise signed the accord that both countries said would prove beneficial to their population. The agreement calls for the establishment of a high-level taskforce that will draft, within 60 days, new terms of collaboration on economic and infrastructure development in Haiti as well as potential ways to attract more Taiwanese investors. Haiti is among only a handful of CARICOM countries that still maintain diplomatic relations with Taiwan that China considers to be a renegade province.

According to the Miami Herald, Haitian diplomats were not invited to a special White House reception Monday night for “like-minded” governments who are standing with the United States in a call to suspend Venezuela from the Organization of American States. Vice President Mike Pence and his wife Karen invited a group of more than 22 countries' leaders to the White House for a cocktail

The Mayor of the Commune of Estère in Haiti, Senèque Estimable, has been found alive. He was last seen walking towards the capital of Port-Au-Prince late last month before going missing for days. News of the mayor being found was confirmed by his lawyer, Samuel Madistin who said his client was kidnapped on May 23rd but then released without any ransom being paid. He said his client was not abused but that the kidnappers had tried, without success, to force him to sign a check in their name. Madistin said Estimable had been released during the early hours of Tuesday and had made contact with a police patrol and members of the Motorized Intervention Brigade.

reception as a “small token of appreciation” for support on such a challenging issue in the hemisphere. Haiti was not among the 22. Carlos Trujillo, the U.S. ambassador to the OAS, said Haiti and others who backed Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro were intentionally left off the invitation list. Among those who did receive invites were Argentina, Bahamas, Barbados, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Jamaica, Saint Lucia and Saint Kitts and Nevis. Caribbean and Latin American nations such as Haiti, Saint Vincent and Grenadines, Dominica, Saint Kitts and Nevis and Nicaragua have received billions in cheap loans for oil from Venezuela.

Norway, Argentina, South Africa, and Kenya. With President Trump having recently imposed trade tariffs against steel and aluminum imported from Canada, the European Union and Mexico, it is anticipated that the subject of tariffs could be prominent on the G7 agenda. The imposition of these tariffs is of particular concern to Jamaica as the country is poised to restart aluminum production and exports with the assistance of Russian and other international investors. The chairman of the 15-member Caribbean Community (CARICOM) grouping, President Jovenel Moise of Haiti, is also scheduled to attend the G7 Summit on the invitation of PM Trudeau but is not expected to address the prestigious group.

PART 2

World Cup Preview GROUP D Argentina Croatia Nigeria Iceland

This may be considered one of the most competitive groups. It will certainly not come as any surprise if we should get this all wrong, as there is no clear favorite in this group.

Argentina

Iceland

Argentina have limped into this World Cup based solely on the magic of their number 10 Lionel Messi. Messi continues to be, arguably, the number one player in the world. However, his supporting cast have not helped him in the past to secure a South American Championship nor a World Cup title, having lost in the last two finals to Chile and to Germany in the 2014 World Cup finals. This will be Messi’s last chance for redemption and he is certainly faced with a large mountain to climb if he hopes to finally lift the World Cup for his beloved Argentina. Argentina's first hurdle will be to get out of this competitive group and Messi will be hoping for the likes of Angel Di Maria in midfield; Sergio Aguero up-front and Nicholas Otamendi in defense, to turn up to the party. If these players come and perform to the best of their ability, then Argentina should take this Group and advance to the round of sixteen.

Iceland, one of the surprise countries at the last European Championship, should not be under estimated. Although they can be considered the minnows of the group, it would not be a surprise if they gain points that will be detrimental to others in the group. With no real household names in their line up, Iceland relied upon country pride and team spirit to arrive in Russia. Croatia should know a lot about them and the great treat they provide, having finished runners up to Iceland in their European World Cup qualifying group. Iceland players to watch include: Gylfi Sirgurdsson in mid-field; Alfred Finnbogason up-front and Birkir Mar Saevarsson in defence.

Croatia Lionel Messi

This Group features the team that has the support of many Caribbean fans and the favorites to lift the cup, Brazil.

Brazil Brazil advanced to the World Cup by easily topping the South American World Cup qualification. Brazil comes to the Word Cup with what can considered the best team. This squad is well balanced, has all-round strength and possess extremely talented players in every aspect of play. Brazil, aka the Samba Boys, are on a mission of redemption to reclaim their country's pride, after suffering a 7-1 humiliated defeat at the hands to Germany on home territory at the last World Cup. Led by the skillful and super talented, Neymar Jr., a player who I consider the next king of the game, the Brazilians are expected to be too strong for their opponents and should make light work of the competition in this group. Neymar should be supported by an all -star cast of Gabriel Jesus and Roberto Firmino in attack; Casemiro, Fernandinho, Philippe Coutinho and Douglas Costa in mid-field; Thiago Silva, Marcelo and Miranda, and in continues on B4 – World Cup Preview

Croatia is one of the dark horses of this World Cup, with a chance of going all the way. Having finished second in their Group behind Iceland, they defeated Greece by 4-1 on aggregate to advance to the big bash. Croatia's strength lies in the mid-field and attack. Their team is blessed with talented and seasoned players such as Luka Modric and Ivan Rakitic, who are expected to provide control in the mid-field area and help the gifted attacking trio that Croatia possesses in Mario Mandzukic, Ivan Perisic and Ante Rebic. Croatia's defense is led by Dejan Lovren and can be considered steady at best. But if the lessons learnt from their qualification are adhered to, then they should advance from this group. It will be wise of all competing countries not to take this Croatian team as easy pickings, and if they do, they may do so at their own peril.

Nigeria Nigeria overcame a strong African qualifying group with the likes of Cameroon, Zambia and Algeria. But having reached the World Cup, they will need to be at their best to drag themselves to the next round from this Group. Nigeria's strength is in their mid-field, led by the experienced Jon Mikel Obi and with the talented pair of John Ogu and Alew Iwobi, the Nigerians can be a force to reckoned with. However, it is in attack that they seem lacking, not having a lethal goal scorer. Forwards Victor Moses, Odion Ighalo and company will need to be at their best to get the necessary goals for the Nigerians to advance from the group. Nigeria will depend heavily on the young and talented goalkeeper Francis Uzoho, behind a reasonable but not brilliant defense line, to see off their opponents' attacks. Our prediction is that when the dust is settled, is Argentina will be topping the group ahead of Croatia.

goal one of the best goalkeeper's in the world, Alisson. The samba beat is playing, and expectations are high as the boys from Brazil begin their quest to gain their sixth hold on the World Cup.

Keylor Navas

Serbia

Costa Rica Costa Rica was one of the bright spots and surprise team at the last World Cup, making it to the quarter finals. In Keylor Navas, Costa Rica possesses one of the world's top goalkeepers. The Costa Ricans advanced to the World Cup finishing second behind Mexico in the CONCACAF qualifying. The Ticos as they are called by their fellow countrymen and fans, may not possess individual star players but as a unit are well organized and coached. This team is matured, and a number of these players are heading towards the end of their World Cup careers and will want to leave in a memorial and historic way. In mid-fielder Bryan Ruiz, forward Joel Campbell, and defender Oscar Duarte, the Ticos possess quality players and on field leadership. Along with captain, Keylor Navas,

the Ticos should prove competitive in this group.

Switzerland Switzerland are in contention to advance from the group but will have to be at their best. The Swiss finished second with the same number of points as group winners Portugal in their European qualifying group. They advanced by overcoming Ireland 1-0 on aggregate. The Swiss possess a strong, well-organized

defensive unit that have only allowed 7 goals in qualification. The teams attacking treat lies with midfielders Granit Xhaka and the skillful playmaker, Granit Xhaka. The Swiss does not

Germany, the defending champion, will try to do what only Brazil has done - win back-toback World Cup titles. This will be asking a lot, but everyone should know by now that the Germans can never be counted out. Germany comes to the World Cup topping their qualifying European group and winning all their matches. The Germans are definitely one of the favorites to lift the World Cup and should have little problem in topping and advancing from this group. They possess a well balance squad with a blend of experience and youth. However, if there is a weakness, it the lack of a lethal goal scorer and a skillful forward to break down opposition in one-on-one situations. In Manuel Neuer and Marc-Andre ter Stegen, the Germans possess two excellent world class goalkeepers. Mats Hummels and Jerome Boateng are expected to anchor the defense, allowing the deadly German mid-fielders of Toni Kroos, Mesut Ozil, Thomas Muller and Marco Reus to reap havoc on their opponents. They will be hard to beat.

Mexico

Manuel Neuer

possess a lethal striker or consistent goal scorer and must rely on team play to get the necessary goals and get the job done.

Mesut Ozil

Mexico are the CONCACAF kingpins and remain, in may be, CONCACAF's only chance of advancing beyond the group stages. This won't be an easy task and EL Trio, the name that their loving and supporting countrymen call them, are expected to battle with Sweden for the runners-up spot. Mexico has a pretty decent squad and should prove quite competitive. Toni With Guillermo Ochoa in Kroos goal and the likes of Carlos Salcedo, Hector Moreno and Hugo Ayala in defense, El Trio will be well served in defense. It is in midfield that the Mexicans possess technically gifted players such as Hector Herrera, Andres Guardado, and brothers Jonathan Dos Santos and Giovani Dos Santos. These players can be a handful on any day. With Carlos Vela

Serbia topped their European Group and gained automatic qualification to the World Cup. The Serbs come into the tournament under a cloud, having sacked Coach Slavoljub Muslin, who led the team to the World Cup. He has been replaced by Mladen Krstajić. With this change of coach, the team seems a little disjointed. However, The Serbs possess experienced players in every section of the field: Aleksandar Kolarov and Branislav Ivanovic in defense; Nemanja Matic and Dusan Tadicin mid-field and Aleksandar Mitrovic in attack. With these players, along with the young and upcoming talented players selected in the squad and if Serbia can get their team structure right, they will have something to say. Brazil are expected to top the group, with Serbia taking the second spot, to advance to the round of sixteen.

and Javier Hernandez in attack, they pack enough power and class to advance.

Sweden Sweden finished second to France in their European qualifying group before knocking out the dangerous Italy, 1-0 in aggregate. With the retirement of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Sweden no longer has a superstar. However, what this team has is a strong fighting spirit and a solid defensive unit. They are a well-organized and well-coached team that plays on the counter attack. This team will prove difficult to break down. In Marcus Berg, Sweden possesses a proven goal scorer and with the skillful and speedy wide mid-fielder Emil Forsberg expected to provide him with goal scoring opportunity, Sweden's hopes remain high.

South Korea South Korea advanced to the World Cup from Group A of the Asian qualification, finishing runners up to Iran. The Koreans finds themselves the least fancied of the Group. It will provide extremely difficult for South Korea to advance from this group. Their hope will hinge on a victory in their opening game against Sweden. In Son Heung-Min, South Korea has a player with immense talent and South Korea's slim hopes to advance from this group weighs heavily on his shoulders. My prediction is that Germany will top the group and Mexico will claim second spot.

CAHM

CARIBBEAN-AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH

The Background June is again being celebrated as National CaribbeanAmerican Heritage Month, (NCAHM). In 2000, the Institute of Caribbean Studies, (ICS), initiated the celebration of June as Caribbean American Heritage Month in Washington DC, building on the 1999 efforts started by a group of Caribbean residents to have a month dedicated to Caribbean American Heritage. The ICS then lobbied for the US Congress to pass legislation to have a National Caribbean American Heritage Month. In 2004, the appropriate Bill was tabled in Congress by Congresswoman Barbara Lee based on wording provided by ICS Founder and President, Dr. Claire Nelson. The Bill was reintroduced and passed in the House in June 2005 and by the Senate in February 2006. A Proclamation making the Resolution official was signed by President George W. Bush on June 5, 2006. The ICS effort to create a special month dedicated to Caribbean American Heritage was based upon contributions Caribbean migrants made to several aspects of American society, starting in the 16th century when slaves from Barbados came to America and settled in in Massachusetts and Virginia. Over the years, a strong trend of migrants travelled to the North East, making significant contributions, especially in New York City, then later to other regions in the US, including South Florida. The icons of Caribbean-American heritage include people like Alexander Hamilton, the First Secretary of the Treasury who hailed from

St. Kitts/Nevis; former Secretary of State Colin Powell; actress Cicely Tyson: educator W.E.B Dubois; James Weldon Johnson; Harry Belafonte; Sidney Poitier; Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm; Attorney General Eric Holder, and former Florida State Representative Hazelle Rogers, among others. Congresswoman Lee's bill urged Congress to establish a National Caribbean-American Heritage Month to acknowledge and celebrate the contributions of Caribbean-Americans to the United States. At the time she tabled the bill, a statement from Lee's office said: “It is also important that we address the concerns of CaribbeanAmericans residing in our districts......From 1820 to 2002, more than 68 million people emigrated from the Caribbean region to the United States. Caribbean-Americans have influenced every aspect of American culture, society and government. Their history is interwoven with ours." Large Caribbean American communities are in the New York Tri-State area, South and Central Florida, Atlanta (Georgia), Maryland, Washington D.C., Pennsylvania, Texas, Massachusetts, Baltimore, and California. Various estimates place this population as between 4 to 7 million people, including the first, second and third generations. Regrettably, despite intense lobbying to the US Census Bureau, the 2010 Census did not offer a separate category to account for Caribbean nationals, so there is still no official demographics of the Caribbean American population. But regardless of this drawback, there is no doubt that Caribbean Americans continue to make outstanding contributions to America's economy, politics, culture, entertainment, and general society.

HEALTH and Wellness

Men's Health Month

Men Must Be More Health Conscious Most local doctors seem to agree that the most serious health problem some men face is carelessness in their personal healthcare management. Miami Doctor, Manley Latouche, says, while he has several male patients, the majority are over age 50 with symptoms of one medical problem or another. “Young men, once they aren't feeling pain, tend to be reluctant to visit their doctors,” he said, while advising men from as young as their early twenties to visit their doctors even once per year for a physical, as this is an essential preventative measure for serious health problems “down the road.” Endorsing Dr. Latouche's comments, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), indicated men are 24 percent less likely than women to have seen a doctor in the past year. With June being highlighted in the healthcare sector as Men's Health Month, men are urged to be more responsible in managing their personal healthcare. Although some men foolishly think they are immune to diseases, medical data show they are as susceptible, in some cases more so, to serious problems like heart disease, diabetes, cancer, hypertension and strokes, as women. Moreover, men should be aware that there are several diseases peculiar to them and take preventative health measures as they grow older. These peculiar diseases include: prostate disease and cancer; testicular cancer; erectile dysfunction; infertility, cirrhosis of the liver due to drinking excessive alcohol, and lung disease and cancer due to excessive smoking. Many of the major health risks men face are preventable and can be treated with early diagnosis. Screening tests including blood tests, stool tests, colonoscopies, cardiology tests that can determine early signs of high cholesterol, diabetes, and prostate disease, make several diseases easier to treat. It is generally agreed that along with regular routine physical preventive screenings, men should endeavor to be more physically active, eat healthier meals, manage and maintain their weight, quit smoking, moderate alcohol consumption, get an average of eight hours sleep nightly and try to avoid or manage stress. The frequency of screenings depends on a man's age and risk factors of some disease. Men should be aware if their male ancestors – fathers or grandfathers - had certain diseases like cancer, high blood pressure and diabetes as they may also be prone to these diseases. As such, they should ensure they are screened regularly. Preventative healthcare measures also include immunization. For example, men who often work in unsanitary conditions, or travel frequently internationally, should be immunized (vaccinated) for Hepatitis A and B. While men over 65 should not be reluctant to get annual vaccinations against the flu, pneumonia and shingles. Men are generally considered the main bread-winner and the source of protection n families. However, often through carelessness, some men are unable to carry out these responsibilities because of serious early diseases or death. Dr. Latouche says not only do some men act irresponsibly and inconsiderate by ignoring proper healthcare until too late, but they're “being downright selfish.” He cited incidences of early chronic disease or death creating great hardships on many families “because of selfish men who didn't take time treat unknown serious illnesses, or who die prematurely, their families suffer unduly.” “Men must take care of their heath for their own physical well-being and that of their families,” he added.

Diseases Peculiar To Men Testicular Cancer Testicular cancer can affect one or both testicles. This cancer is rare, but usually affects young men ages 15 to 35. Fortunately, it is more curable than most forms of cancer. The risk factors of testicular cancer include: Ÿ Having an undescended testicle that did not descend from inside the abdomen before birth. Ÿ Having testicles that form in an abnormal way. Ÿ Having a personal or family history of testicular cancer. Routine checking for testicular cancer - either by a doctor or by self-exam - and finding it early, may make it easier to treat. If a man through self-examination finds any abnormalities, or lumps within/on their testicles they are advised to see a doctor immediately.

Prostate Disease

MEN’S HEALTH G U I D E Men should be aware that there are several diseases peculiar to them and take preventative health measures as they grow older.

The purpose of the prostate gland is to produce semen that contains sperm. The gland surrounds the urethra, the organ that transports urine from the bladder through the penis and grows larger with age. If the prostate grows too large, it can cause problems, including enlarged prostate and prostate cancer.

Prostate Enlargement An enlarged prostate is fairly common for men over 50. If the gland grows too large, it squeezes the urethra, causing urinary problems, evidenced by:

Prostate Cancer Prostate cancer is a serious and common cancer affecting men, including a large percentage of black men, and has a high death rate.

In the US more than 100,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer each year & the majority are over 65

You are older than 50

Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ

Frequent and urgent need to urinate. Trouble starting to urinate although the urge is present. Weak urine stream. Small amount of urine. Frequently urinating throughout the night. Urine leaking from the penis and signs of blood in the urine.

Counseling and managing stress

There's no definitive cause for this cancer, but common factors include old age - over 50; ethnicity - black and Asian men; family history of prostate cancer; obesity; excessive exercise and a diet rich in fat and calcium. While signs of prostate cancer can be easily identified and treated, the disease is often not discovered until too late because most men are embarrassed of the screening test. The most effective test is the digital rectal exam, during which a doctor inserts a gloved index finger into a man's rectum to feel if his prostate is enlarged. Several doctors encourage men to have the digital rectal exam, by comparing the exam to digital vaginal exams women undergo during their physical exams. It's also suggested that if men are too embarrassed to be examined by male doctors, they should see female doctors. Another important screening test is the Prostate Specific Antigen, (PSA) test which is a blood test. Should this test show a higher than normal PSA level, the risk of prostate cancer is higher.

Sexual Disorders Several men experience sexual disorders like premature ejaculation, and erectile dysfunction -ED, or the inability to either have or keep a penile erection, which creates unhappiness, stress and low self-esteem in their lives. While premature ejaculation can be easily treated with topical creams and ointments, ED is a more serious problem. The Common Causes Of ED Include: · Clogged Blood Vessels · High Blood Pressure · High Cholesterol · Acute Diabetes Some medication like those to treat high blood pressure, excessive smoking, alcohol, lack of exercise, high stress, depression and old age are also to be blamed though younger men are known to have occasional ED. Unfortunately, some men, instead of seeing a doctor to determine the cause of their ED, take medication like Viagra and Cialis to enhance their erection. However, these sexual enhancement drugs should not be taken without a doctor's prescription as they can have serious side effects, including heart attacks.

Machel Montano Performs At Belize Prom Soca superstar, Machel Montano, returned to Belize recently to fulfill a promise he made to students at the Stann Creek Ecumenical to perform at their prom. The singer, according to the Belize Reporter, said he returned to the country after promising the Stann Creek Ecumenical High School students he would after a visit there last year. He performed at their prom on May 31st. Montano also said he will begin work on establishing a musical program at the institution to provide students the opportunity to learn about their Garifuna music and culture and empower the next generation of Belizean artistes. “I will continue my work with the school to realize our collective vision, and we will have more things to announce further down the road as things develop,” Montano added.

Ras Kronik Partners With Top American producer A Jamaican reggae singer who has toured the United States West Coast for over 15 years, has found an unlikely partner in a top American producer who has worked with mega stars such as Adele, Taylor Swift and Beyonce. Ras Kronik, who is based in Las Vegas, recently worked with producer Steve Migliore, known in music circles as Mr. Mig of the Maxx Beat label, who directed him on the song Get High. Released in April, Get High is recorded on a House beat, a departure for Ras Kronik whose previous songs are either roots-reggae or lovers rock productions. He hopes working with the high-profile Mr. Mig may give him his big break.

“The link came straight from Mr. Mig himself. He sent me a message via twitter telling me who he was and that he liked what I am doing, and he would like to do something for me,” said Ras Kronik. He believes cutting a song on the trendy House beat can open new markets for him. “I think for my career it’s a good move. Mr. Mig taking a vocal as mine and collaborate it with a House/Dance beat that’s really amazing because it puts me in the mix with the clubbers and Millennials,” he said. Get High addresses the global drive to legalize marijuana. That movement includes Jamaica where legislation to decriminalize the plant has moved apace in the last three years. Ras Kronik is from Clarendon, a rural parish in Jamaica. He has lived in Las Vegas for over 10 years, making a name for himself on the gambling capital’s reggae circuit. To date, he has released two albums: The Real Thing Remix which came out in 2013, and Wild N Free which was released in 2016. Ras Kronik performs on the June 9 Reggae In The Desert show at Clark County Amphitheatre in Las Vegas, along with Collie Buddz, The Mighty Diamonds, Kabaka Pyramid, Third World and Cocoa Tea.

Beenie Man's 1998 hit single, 'Who Am I,' has made it to the list of Billboard Magazine's Top 98 Tracks of 1998. Credited with the infamous 'Oh Nah Nah,' Beenie Man's 'Who Am I' is described by Billboard as “one of dancehall's few pop culture masterpieces.” Billboard also noted that 'Who Am I' became such a staple that Beenie Man had to transform the track in the year 2000 with 'Girls Dem Sugar,' a collaboration featuring pop singer Mya. According to Billboard Charts History, 'Who Am I' peaked at Number 40 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts in 1998.

Sting, Shaggy Perform At Stanley Cup

Spice Apologizes For Fat-Shaming Co-Star

There's no stopping Sting and Shaggy. The former lead singer of the Police and the Jamaica native best known for his 2000 single “It Wasn't Me,” were the performers at Game 3 of the NHL's Stanley Cup finals last weekend.

Jamaican-born dancehall star Spice is apologizing after fat-shaming a co-star on the show, 'Love & Hip-Hop Atlanta – Season 7.' In a recent episode of the show Spice made jabs about hip-hop star Tokyo Vanity's weight and Vanity attacks Spice for making fun of her size. The ladies begin to brawl with things getting ugly when Tokyo threw her purse at Spice, and security had to intervene to prevent both ladies from snatching each other's wigs. The Jamaican star then took to Instagram to say she was “disappointed in myself for doing the exact same thing I promised myself that I wouldn't do.” “Watching back myself fighting on Tv has left me with deep despondency,” she wrote. “Even tho I heard that disrespectful remarks was passed about me behind my back. Leaving me to think she was trowing shade i said I'm gonna trow the whole tree when I met her. With that being said it still doesn't justify the fact that I was so wrong to comment on her weight” Spice, born Grace Latoya Hamilton, however, said she “honestly feel like there's also some cultural diversity conflict in this situation because we don't really take the fat shaming so serious on my side of the world.” “My mother and sisters are Voluptuous women and I joke with them daily about their weight likewise they do to me,” she added but noted: I also have to realize that I'm not in my regular surroundings.” “I still want to take this time out to apologize to Tokyo again and to also apologize to whom I offended. With that being said big up to all my #smurfettes,” Spice added. Meanwhile at least one of her fans on Instagram implored: “You need to leave this show its beneath you. Bad for your career in my opinion.” while one user on Twitter said “the show does nothing for the organization she just launched.” Spice signed on as a supporting cast member for Love and HipHop Atlanta Season 7, after appearing as a guest celebrity last season. She launched the Grace Hamilton Women Empowerment Foundation on May 27th to “uplift young women and push them towards success despite life's obstacles.”

The duo perform on the steps of the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery on G Street in Washington, D.C. on Saturday, June 2 at “The Stanley Cup Final Concert presented by Hulu.” The show featured songs from the Grammy-winning singers new collaborative album 44/876 and its lead single, “Don't Make Me Wait,” which debuted at the top of Billboard's digital reggae singles chart. The album's lead single, "Don't Make Me Wait," debuted at no. 1 on Billboard's digital reggae singles chart.44/876: The Remixes was also recently released and features an album's worth of song remixes from their album by a diverse range of artists including Chris Baio of Vampire Weekend, the Brazilian duo Tropkillaz, Cherry Cherry Boom Boom (Madonna, Lady Gaga) and Grammy-award winning producer Dave Audé, among others. Sting and Shaggy will take their collaboration on the road this summer when the two iconic artists embark on a European tour of various historic venues, performing their most celebrated hits as well as songs off their new album together, followed by a North American tour in the fall.

Fraser Pryce Settles For Second Place Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce had to settle for second place in the 100 meters at the Cayman Invitational on Saturday, behind the United States' Jenna Prandini. Prandini clocked 11.16 seconds to take the race ahead of Fraser-Pryce, the World and Olympic champion, who crossed the tape in 11.33 seconds. At a Jamaica All Comers meet last month, Fraser-Pryce was victorious, but in a slower 11.52 seconds. Trinidad and Tobago's Semoy Hackett finished the race fourth in 11.34 seconds, just behind another American, Aaliyah Brown, who clocked the same time as Fraser-Pryce, the three hitting the tape in a line. Fraser-Pryce won gold in the 100m at the 2008 Beijing and London 2012 Olympic Games.

Call Them Sandals Resorts' WINDIES Cricket West Indies (CWI) has announced that Sandals Resorts has agreed to a long-term contract to become the new principal partner and team sponsor of the WINDIES, following their support of last week's Hurricane Relief T20 Challenge at Lord's. The new partnership will run until December 31, 2020 and is effective immediately. It will cover all WINDIES teams from U-15s through to the WINDIES Men's and Women's teams. As part of the agreement, Sandals will have their logo inscribed on all WINDIES playing and training clothing, as well as benefiting from activating WINDIES cricket in their marketing and social responsibility program. Sandals will also enjoy stadium branding at all home matches and broadcast sponsorship of all WINDIES matches shown on Sky Sports.

“WINDIES cricket is the heartbeat of the Caribbean and we're thrilled to partner with such a prestigious international brand as Sandals which is also synonymous with promoting the best of the Caribbean to the world,” said CWI CEO Johnny Grave. Sandals replaces Digicel as the teams sponsor. The telecommunications giant recently ended a 13-year agreement with Cricket Windies. Chairman of Sandals, Gordon 'Butch' Stewart, said the partnership between the two entities is a natural fit. “Our relationship with West Indies cricket is not a new one, having sponsored tours to the UK in 1995, 2000 and 2004, and we have now deepened our support for the WINDIES with this sponsorship which will cover all upcoming tours including the World Cup until the end of 2020,” Stewart said. “We have absolutely loved our association

with West Indies Cricket over the years, and we look forward with great enthusiasm to this latest partnership, which started with a win against the ICC World XI in the hurricane relief fundraising match at Lord's on May 31. We look forward to the WINDIES continuing its winning ways in the series against Sri Lanka, and the others to come. “Sandals believes in the collective power of our Caribbean people, which has been at the heart of our success as the World's Leading All-Inclusive Company for 22 consecutive years. Similarly, the WINDIES has been one of the most important institutions in fostering regional unity and pride. Sandals and West Indies cricket are two of the most successful indigenous brands to have come out of the Caribbean, which makes this partnership a natural fit, and we are proud to work alongside Cricket West Indies once more.”

Reggae Boyz To Clash With Cayman In CONCACAF Nation's League Jamaica's Reggae Boyz team is set to meet the Cayman Islands on September 9th in their opening game of the CONCACAF Nation's League. This was revealed following the publication of the dates for the 68-match qualifying phase, which is scheduled to take place during the four FIFA match windows of September, October and November 2018 and March 2019. The Reggae Boyz, after playing the Cayman Islands, will next be in action on October 10th in Bonaire. The team returns to the field against Suriname on November 1th before ending the qualifying phase away to El Salvador on March 23, 2019. The total points for each team, at the end of qualifying, will be compiled into an aggregate table that ranks participating teams 1-34 based on their on-field results. The final standings of the qualifying phase will determine how teams are placed into Leagues A, B and C for the inaugural CONCACAF Nations League Group Phase. Additionally, the top ten finishers of the Nations League Qualifying final table will complete the list of sixteen teams that will qualify for the 2019 Gold Cup, joining the six teams that participated in the 2018 FIFA World Cup Hexagonal.
