Diaspora Members Call for Representation in Jamaica’s Senate A proposal recently rehashed by the leader of the opposition People's National Party Mark Golding has been gaining traction among members of the diaspora. While making his contribution to the budget debate on March 15, Golding argued that the island's current constitutional arrangement has entrenched an adversarial political culture that does not support nation building. “I am therefore in favor of reforms which force our political class to develop and accept the skills of consensus building, a process which will in itself help to build a more tolerant and loving society in Jamaica,” he said. “For example, the Senate should be expanded to include some independent members who are jointly appointed by the prime minister and the leader of the opposition. They must include representatives from key stakeholders in our society such as the churches and our diaspora on who we rely so much. After all, our national motto is “Out of Many, One People” and our constitutional arrangement should reflect this aspiration,” he continued. The proposal to include members of the diaspora in the Jamaican Senate was first introduced by former Prime Minister Bruce Golding in 2008, but never came to fruition. This time around, it has received much support from key players in the Jamaican diaspora. “The diaspora has invested in and continues to invest heavily in Jamaica, and we would welcome any opportunity to be part of the decision-making and policy implementation of

Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett made the announcement recently, while Sterling was visiting the island, noting that the Manchester City footballer has been named tourism ambassador in Europe. “The island and its unique culture have always played an important role in Sterling's life and so he is the perfect person to represent the destination during its diamond year of celebrations,” Bartlett said in a statement. At the intimate press briefing, Sterling spoke of how honored he is to represent the Jamaica Tourist Board in Europe, particularly during the milestone year. “I am proud to have been born in Jamaica and I can't wait to spread the word about what a wonderful place it is,” the 27-year-old said. with his mother, Nadine Clarke. His father was murdered in Jamaica when Sterling was two years old. At age five, he emigrated to Neasden, London, with his mother. After showing an interest in football and playing for several youth teams, Sterling was signed by Liverpool in February 2010 at the age of 15. He initially played in the club's youth team but made his senior Liverpool debut in 2012 at age 17, becoming the third-youngest player to play for the club. During his time as Liverpool, Sterling was named as one of the six players on the shortlist for the PFA Young Player of the Year award in 2014. That same year, he was named Liverpool Chartered Player of the Month for April, and at the end of the season, he was named Liverpool's Young Player of the Year. After his contract ended with Liverpool in 2015, a deal was agreed for his transfer to Manchester City for an initial £44 million, with a further potential £5 million in add-ons, subject to personal terms and a medical, which would make him the most expensive English player of all time. Sterling officially joined Manchester City, signing a five-year contract. Sterling appeared regularly for Manchester City since then. In the 2018–19 season, he was named to the PFA Premier League Team of the Year and won the PFA Young Player of the Year and FWA Footballer of the Year. He was also named in the 23-man England national team squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Sterling has been named as one of the 100 most influential Black Britons, with his inclusion in the annual Powerlist in both the 2020 and 2021 editions. He was also appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2021 Birthday Honors for services to racial equality in sport. Raheem Sterling has one daughter, Melody Rose, born in 2012 and three sons, Tori-Sevyn, Thai-Cruz, and Thiago Sterling.

CARIBBEAN St. Lucia to Join CCJ as full Member St. Lucia on Tuesday signaled its intention to become the fifth Caribbean Community (CARICOM) country to have full membership of the Trinidad-based Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) that was established in 2001 to replace the London-based Privy Council as the region's final court. Acting Governor General Cyril Errol Charles, delivering the traditional Throne speech at the start of the new parliamentary term, told legislators that the government is committed to addressing “our destiny as an independent nation, both tacitly and tangibly. “This year, St. Lucia will take steps toward the accession to the appellate jurisdiction of the Caribbean Court of Justice. We are thus expected to become the fifth CARICOM member state to replace the Privy Council with the CCJ.” Charles said the Phillip J. Pierre administration, which enjoys a 13-4 majority in the Parliament, has appointed a committee under the chairmanship of former CCJ president, Sir Dennis Byron “to prepare the way for St. Lucia's accession to the CCJ. “The draft legislation for the amendment of St. Lucia's Constitution to allow for accession has been prepared and

US to Provide Funding for COVID-19 Vaccination Programme in Several Caribbean Countries The United States government on Tuesday announced plans to provide US$1.5 million in coronavirus (COVID-19) assistance to several Caribbean countries. A statement issued by the US Embassy in Trinidad said the assistance will be made through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) for countries in the Eastern Caribbean region including Trinidad and Tobago, The Bahamas, Barbados, Guyana, and Suriname. “This assistance will be focused on helping countries with vaccine deployment and readiness and includes efforts to address

vaccine hesitancy and combat vaccine mis- and dis-information. The additional support will assist with community vaccination campaigns and engagement activities, strengthen the cold chain environment, train healthcare workers, and develop regional and country-specific campaigns to increase vaccine uptake,” the statement said. It said local, regional, and international organizations such as the local Ministries of Health, local non-governmental organizations, the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA), the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), UNICEF, and the

USAID Country Health Information Systems and Data Use (CHISU) project will implement the activities. “This funding comes at an opportune time to increase the vaccination coverage of the people of Trinidad and Tobago. We are encouraged to see that slightly more than 50 percent of the Trinbagonian population has now been fully vaccinated, but we need to do more to increase the numbers,” said U.S. Embassy Chargé d'Affaires, Shante Moore. USAID Regional Representative for the Eastern and Southern Caribbean Clinton D. White said the funding will fill key gaps to

accelerate COVID-19 vaccine uptake and strengthen countries' preparedness for future pandemic threats.” “This additional assistance builds on previous COVID-19 support to Caribbean countries. USAID has provided nearly US$63 million in COVID-19 assistance to the Caribbean to address the health, humanitarian, and economic impacts of COVID-19. This includes more than seven million US dollars specifically for the Eastern and Southern Caribbean region since the beginning of the pandemic,” the statement noted.

More CARICOM Countries Moving to Cut Ties with the Queen When Barbados renounced Queen Elizabeth II as its head of state in November, this space suggested that Prime Minister Mia Mottley may have started a governance “revolution.” Four months after that historical move by the “Bajans,” other Caribbean countries have strengthened their desires to put the Queen aside and appoint one of their own as head of state. Earlier this week, Prime Minister John Briceño, of Belize informed his country that a “People's Constitutional Commission” was formed to conduct “consultations across the country on the continuing decolonization process.” The country's Public Service, Constitutional & Political Reform Minister, Henry Charles Usher, told parliament that “The decolonization process is enveloping the Caribbean region. Perhaps it is time for Belize to take that next step in truly owning our independence.” Just days earlier, Prime Minister Andrew Holness told the visiting Duke and Duchess of Cambridge that Jamaica intends to attain and fulfill its “true ambitions as an independent, developed and prosperous country in short order.” In November last year, Former St Lucia Prime Minister Dr. Kenny Anthony urged his country to move towards republican status. Throwing his hat in the “republic ring” also is Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. He said he looks forward to the day when other members of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) will follow Barbados, Guyana, Dominica, Trinidad and Tobago, and adopt a republican form of government. But what does it really mean for these countries that have made the change, and what will happen to those looking to do so? Are there any economic, political, or social benefits from removing the Queen as head of state and becoming a republic? A republic is a form of government in which representatives of the citizens rule a state. All the territories where the Queen is head of state are independent nations where their governments are

Queen Elizabeth II

elected by “the people” through a democratic process. The Queen, who has representation through the governor general (GG), has no political power, and is not involved in any decision making. The ceremonial role of the GG is to approve legislation, grant honors, and appoint certain officials. As head of state, the Queen is also prominent on state currencies. Currently, she still graces the face of the Eastern Caribbean dollar, which is used by eight Caribbean islands, six of which are independent. The other countries have placed their own citizens on their currencies. Apart from bilateral economic agreements between the UK and the countries in the Commonwealth, none of the independent nations get any financial help from the monarchy. No money is paid by them to Buckingham Palace either. Therefore, there would be no economic loss or gain with the move. Since World War II, twenty former territories have become republics and installed one of their own as president and head of state. Since 1970 four Caribbean countries have severed ceremonial ties with the monarchy. These are Dominica, Guyana, Trinidad, and Tobago, and the latest Barbados. Not much has changed with the head of state position in these countries. The president performs mainly ceremonial duties. In leaving the Queen behind, the former governor-general and current president of

Barbados said, “The time has come to fully leave our colonial past behind.” According to The Week, a UK publication, Prime Minister Mia Mottley described the move as a “seminal moment” that will see the nation of 300,000 people leave its colonial past behind. She was also quoted as saying that the move was not a rejection of the Queen but “an assertion that it must be available to every Barbadian boy and girl to aspire to be the head of state of this nation. It is not just legal, it's also symbolic.” The former prime minister of Jamaica, P.J. Patterson, who wrote to the current prime minister and opposition leader encouraging them to work and republican status for the country's 60th year of independence, has spoken about the “institution of an indigenous president as head of state.” In his address to Prince William and Duchess Kate on their recent visit, Prime Minister Andrew Holness said: “Jamaica is very proud of our history and very proud of what we have achieved. And we are moving on and we intend to attain, in short order, our development goals and fulfill our true ambitions and destiny as an independent, developed, prosperous country.” So, what is the real reason for leaving the Queen? It would seem that the past is still haunting the people's minds in these territories. The struggles, injustice, and economic malfeasance are still giving our people nightmares. For many, the time has come to right the wrong, which means cutting off a relationship that was fostered and benefitted from slavery. There is also the pride of truly being independent. As some have suggested, this means allowing any citizen in a country to aspire to occupy one of the highest offices of their land. If there is something certain about Caribbean people, it's their desire to “run tings ah dem yard.” They have fought hard for independence, including the loss of lives. This is the last string that binds them to a regrettable and unforgettable past. The time has come to cut the string and move forward.

Groups Send Petition to Haitian PM Urging State of Emergency Civil society groups in Haiti have sent a petition to Prime Minister Dr. Ariel Henry, urging him to declare a state of emergency in the Frenchspeaking Caribbean country to deal with the spate of criminal activities, including kidnapping. The petition notes that cases of murder, kidnapping, rape, armed robbery, and organized looting are countless, and businesses are forced to close with families living with lumps in their throats, everyone waiting in terror for their turn. In their petition, the groups outlined a roadmap with recommendations for dealing with the situation, urging Henry to declare war on armed gangs who are causing widespread hurt in the country, as well as to crack down on customs fraud to prevent the diversion of revenues and impose control measures to eliminate the trafficking of arms and ammunition “This petition is a citizen initiative, nonpartisan, by which we, the undersigned representatives of different sectors of Haitian society, signify to you once again the deep dismay of all social strata of national life in relation to the accelerated degradation of the security situation in Haiti,” the groups said. “We strongly protest against the taking of hostage of the entire population by criminal organizations, and the inaction or even tolerance of the authorities who are failing in their primary obligation to ensure the safety of citizens.” “The National Police, for lack of visibility of its action and support from the political authorities, gives the image of a weakened institution with insufficient staff. This situation makes the police appear as accomplices and infiltrated by the gangs. Although declaring that

Henry

it wants to do everything possible to protect and serve the population, it lacks adequate means.” The petitioners said while the state of emergency, the mobilization of public resources to fight organized crime, and austerity measures should have been in force, as required by the standards of good governance and transparency, there is also need to fully equip the law enforcement agencies. “However, useless expenses are incurred, further draining the scarce resources of the State. Public funds finance futile trips and ceremonies and acquisitions that in no way alleviate the misery of the people. This administrative mismanagement is unacceptable. “The country is in the process of suffocating economically. Generalized insecurity does not benefit the country and plunges it into indescribable chaos. Some even suggest that the team in place seems to prolong the illegitimate enjoyment of power without control, and this, in defiance of the suffering of the population.” The petition is also calling on Prime

Minister Henry to classify armed gangs as terrorist organizations, recruit experts to supervise the police in their efforts to track down and put out of harm's way all bandits. They are also recommending that persons and entities be publicly identified and prosecuted if they are engaged in financing and supplying the gangs with weapons and ammunition. The petition wants a decree “ordering the immediate freezing and confiscation of the assets of all persons and entities who finance and supply these gangs with arms and ammunition” and require telephone companies to provide mandatory identification for any mobile number operating in the territory and disconnect any unidentified telephone number within a reasonable time.” In a second phase of the operations, the petitioners are urging the authorities to modify the uniforms of all police units, clearly identify the vehicles assigned to the service of the State in relation to the institutions to which they belong. “Mr. Prime Minister, it is imperative to adopt these urgent measures without delay. Any delay in the implementation of this plan will have serious consequences that could culminate in a desperate and blind popular revolt that could sweep away everything in its path. History and the nation will hold you, as well as your government, and your collaborators, mainly responsible for the descent into hell of our country.” The petition comes as several groups have announced three days of demonstrations to highlight the crime situation here. Former president Michel Martelly in a video message over the weekend said he was concerned about the growing insecurity that has paralyzed the country. He said a broad political consensus is the best solution to restore security, and to this end, he is encouraging all actors in national life to have a frank dialogue on the matter.

Haiti Yet to Reach Two Percent of Population with COVID-vaccines The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) says Haiti is still to reach two percent of its population in the vaccination drive against the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The information is contained in a new report that indicates only a tiny proportion of COVID-19 vaccines has been administered in developing countries. In the report, the UNDP said the situation has widened the gap between rich and poor, recalling that in September 2021, the World Health Organization (WHO) set an ambitious global target, calling for 70 percent of the global population to be vaccinated by mid-2022. It said at that point, just over three percent of people in low-income countries had been vaccinated with at least one dose, compared to 60.18 percent in high-income countries. “Six months on, the world is nowhere near reaching that target. The overall number of vaccines administered has risen dramatically, but so has the inequality of the distribution: of the 10.7 billion doses given out worldwide, only one percent has been administered in low-income countries,” according to the UNDP, adding that this means that 2.8 billion people around the world are still waiting to get their first shot. According to the UNDP, vaccine inequity jeopardizes the safety of everyone, and is largely responsible for growing continues on B4 – Two Percent

Using Medical Cannabis in Florida? Know The Rules To Avoid Arrest What some medical marijuana patients may not realize is that a registry identification card is not a license to openly smoke cannabis. Nor does it allow them to use legal treatments other than those recommended to them by a qualified medical marijuana physician. More importantly, cardholders can run afoul of law enforcement just like anyone else in Florida, if they're caught with recreational pot, even if they're using it strictly for medicinal purposes. If all of this comes as a surprise to you, you're not alone. But ignorance of the state's medical marijuana and illegal marijuana laws is not a sound defense as far as the criminal justice system is concerned. Ron O'Brien has spent seven of his 24 years with the Leon County Sheriff's Office (LCSO) in the narcotics unit, and he's currently the chief of the LCSO's Department of Special Operations and Investigations. He advises anyone interested in using medical marijuana to go to the Florida Department of Health's Office of Medical Marijuana Use website, www.knowthefactsmmj.com, to learn how the state regulates it. “There are rules on where you can take your medicine,” says Chief O'Brien. “For instance, if you're prescribed smokable marijuana, you cannot use that in a public place or on a bus or things like that.” Medical marijuana patients who smoke cannabis in their cars or in open areas run the risk being stopped by police, with the interaction possibly leading to a search and arrest. Chief O'Brien says law enforcement officers can access medical marijuana registry records to confirm a patient's recommended treatment includes smokable cannabis.

“So, if you're prescribed edibles and you have marijuana in your possession that's in a smokable form, it's illegal because you weren't prescribed that form,” he says. But what about when police suspect a patient authorized to smoke medical cannabis is actually using illegal marijuana? Both look and smell the same. Making that determination was impossible, says Chief O'Brien, until police were equipped with new field tests kits that could determine levels of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the active ingredient that produces the high. Medical cannabis cannot exceed 0.3% THC. Byrallaine “BeBe” Bell has had first-hand experiences with medical marijuana cardholders who were stopped by police for smoking cannabis while driving. She's the owner of BeBe Bail Bonds in Tampa. “They didn't think that there was an issue with them being able to carry their marijuana

and smoke it,” she says. Adds Chief O'Brien: “The medical use law does not exempt a person from prosecution for a criminal offense or a Driving Under the Influence (DUI) related to impairment or intoxication resulting from the medical use of marijuana.” Bell says the consequences of marijuanarelated arrests can be devastating. “An arrest for drugs, whether it's for a small amount or whether it's a major amount, changes your life as far as employment goes. Most lose their jobs because they have gone to jail and missed work,” she explains. The bail bondswoman and the law enforcement officer are wary of legalizing recreational marijuana in Florida. “I believe it would increase violent crimes because everyone's going to start trying to sell it,” says Bell. Chief O'Brien voices similar concerns,

saying legalization of adult-use marijuana would come with limitations on its potency. “Then there will be a market for that higher grade marijuana,” he says, and that void would be filled by the illegal drug trade. “The fact of the matter is that there is a nexus between violent crime and marijuana, at least here in Leon County, and it's because of the money, not the drug itself,” he says. On the issue of the racial disparity between Blacks and Whites arrested for marijuana possession, the two offer unique perspectives. Bell suspects environmental and cultural factors leave Black neighborhoods more exposed to policing while O'Brien sees myriad causes at work. “Most of the people I deal with are from the inner city,” says Bell. “Everything is done hanging out on the corner. Certain corners are just hot spots where you hang out and everything is done there in the community, from barbecuing to buying and selling cannabis. You name it, it's done on the corner. So, there's this huge exposure to law enforcement who patrol those areas.” Chief O'Brien doesn't disagree with Bell's perspective, but he finds the racial disparity problem far more complex. “It gets a lot of thought and a lot of attention, I can tell you that. But it's very complex, and there's no one specific answer to put an end to racial disparity,” he says. April is National Autism Awareness Month Every April Autism Speaks celebrates World Autism Month, beginning with the United Nations-sanctioned World Autism Awareness Day on April 2. This year marks the 15th annual World Autism Awareness Day. Autism, or autism spectrum disorder (ASD), refers to a broad range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech, and nonverbal communication. According to the Centers for Disease Control, autism affects an estimated 1 in 44 children in the United States today. We know that there is not one autism but many subtypes, most influenced by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Because autism is a spectrum disorder, each person with autism has a distinct set of strengths and challenges. The ways in which people with autism learn, think, and problem-solve can range from highly skilled to severely challenged. Some people with ASD may require significant support in their daily lives, while others may need less support and, in some cases, live entirely independently. Several factors may influence the development of autism, and it is often accompanied by sensory sensitivities and medical issues such as gastrointestinal disorders, seizures, or sleep disorders, as well as mental health challenges such as anxiety, depression, and attention issues. Signs of autism usually appear by age two or three. Some associated development delays can appear even earlier, and often, it can be diagnosed as early as 18 months.

What Are the Symptoms of Autism? Specialized healthcare providers diagnose autism using a checklist of criteria in the two categories of social communication challenges and restricted, repetitive behaviors. They also assess autism symptom severity. Autism's severity scale reflects how much support a person needs for daily function. Many people with autism have sensory issues. These typically involve over- or under-sensitivities to sounds, lights, touch, tastes, smells, pain, and other stimuli. Autism is also associated with high rates of certain physical and mental health conditions.

What Causes Autism? A common question after an autism diagnosis is what causes autism. Research suggests that autism develops from a combination of genetic and nongenetic, or environmental, influences.

These influences appear to increase the risk that a child will develop autism. However, it's important to keep in mind that increased risk is not the same as cause. For example, some gene changes associated with autism can also be found in people who don't have the disorder. Similarly, not everyone exposed to an environmental risk factor for autism will develop the disorder. In fact, most will not. Source: Autismspeaks.org

Health Benets of Apple Cider Vinegar People continue to tout the use of apple cider vinegar as a medicine chest item useful in treating a wide variety of physical ailments. For years, herbalists and older members of the community have cited the healing qualities of apple cider vinegar. Apple cider vinegar, found in supermarkets and herbal shops, is made from pulverized apples after a period of fermentation when the apples are broken down to bacteria and yeast, turned into alcohol that ferments into vinegar, holding high contents of acetic and amino acids. The proponents of the healing effects of apple cider vinegar, preferably the organic kind, recommend its consumption (usually a tablespoon in an 8-ounce glass of water two to three times daily to treat:

Digestive problems like heartburn or indigestion. (Consume the apple cider vinegar after meals). Diabetes: apple cider vinegar reduces glucose (sugar) levels (Consume a dose of the product before going to bed). High cholesterol: Consume daily apple cider vinegar reduces high levels of cholesterol. High blood pressure: Regular doses reduce high blood pressure and promote a healthy heart. Cancer: Apple cider vinegar is said to slow the growth, and even kill cancer cells. Weight loss: the product promotes weight loss, as it is said to reduce the appetite making people feel less hungry. Because of the acidic qualities of apple cider vinegar, it’s always recommended it’s diluted before applying it to the skin or drinking. If applied or consumed too strong it can damage the tooth enamel, tissues of the throat, mouth, or skin, and have the reverse effect in the stomach.

Pass the Kutchie, written by Ferguson and Simpson became an international hit twice, when it was first released on their 1982 album Changes and again when it was covered by Musical Youth with altered lyrics to remove the drug reference and was released as Pass the Dutchie. Tabby, Bunny and Judge have released over forty albums in their long career. Their smooth harmonies and choreographed stage show were inspired by Motown vocal groups of the 1960s, The Temptations, The Impressions as well as Jamaican rock steady artistes, John Holt and Ken Boothe. The Mighty Diamonds has received several local and international honors. The group was bestowed the Order of Distinction in the Officer Class in 2021 on Jamaica’s 59th anniversary of independence.

Relaxes Measures from A4 “We are confident that these amended entry requirements will aid in the rebound of our air arrivals, and the ongoing recovery of our tourism industry and related economies.” Chief Executive Officer of the St. Kitts Tourism Authority, Ellison “Tommy” Thompson, said the spring and summer periods are ideal times to experience the destination and easing the entry processes means more seamless arrivals. “We look forward to travelers immersing themselves in our quintessential Caribbean experiences this season, whether they're seeking a relaxing escape, the adrenaline of the outdoors, exceptional cuisine, live music, or a destination rich in history.” The authorities said only fully vaccinated visitors will be allowed entry into the federation with exceptions being only for children under 18 as well as citizens, residents and returning nationals. They said children ages 11 and under who are accompanying their fully vaccinated parents or guardians take the vaccination status of their parents. “Unvaccinated children ages 12-17 must test upon arrival and vacation in place with all family members while awaiting test results.” Meanwhile, the neighboring island of Anguilla, has also announced the lifting of travel authorization for fully vaccinated visitors from April 1. The Ministry of Health said the new guidelines are in accordance with its evolving COVID-19 Exit Strategy. “As of April 1, 2022, all fully vaccinated travelers to Anguilla who are 18 years and older will no longer need to apply for permission to enter the island. They will still need to present evidence of full vaccination status with an approved vaccine and a negative COVID-19 test…taken within three days of travel or a rapid antigen test taken within two days of travel.” The authorities said persons arriving in Anguilla without the appropriate documentation will be required to return to their country of origin; and if it is not possible to return, they shall complete arrival and exit tests, and quarantine for five days at their own expense. “Each visitor that is allowed to quarantine shall pay the Government of Anguilla a fee of US$200 in addition to any fines for unapproved entry. Unvaccinated visitors who have been granted a medical exemption will be required to apply on the entry portal, test on arrival, quarantine for five days and receive a negative test result to exit quarantine,” the statement said, at a cost of US$1000 per person.

inequalities between – and within – countries. “Not only does this state of affairs risk prolonging the pandemic, but the lack of equity has many other impacts, slowing the economic recovery of entire countries, global labour markets, public debt payments, and countries' ability to invest in other priorities.” The UNDP said two years on from the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, poorer countries are finding it harder than ever to recover economically, labor markets are suffering, public debt remains stubbornly high, and there is little left in the coffers to invest in other priorities. “New analysis by UNDP shows that most of the vulnerable countries are found in Sub-Saharan Africa, including Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Chad, where less than one pe cent of the populations are fully vaccinated. Outside of Africa, Haiti and Yemen are still to reach two percent coverage. “The studies show that, if lowincome countries had the same vaccination rate as high-income countries in September last year (around 54 percent) they would have increased their GDP (gross domestic product) by US$16.27 billion in 2021” The UNDP said that urgent access to vaccines and financing, such as the grants and concessions proposed by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), is, according to the study, essential for the poorest countries, alongside support that is tailored to the situation faced by each individual nation.

Sharing similar sentiments was Dr Karren Dunkley, the Global Jamaica Diaspora Council representative for the north-east US, who said in a statement: “The diaspora Northeast USA concurs with the resurrected call to have an independent member of the Senate represent the views of the diaspora. We want to engage with our beloved country, not only as fiscal sponsors or implementors of projects, but also as visionary thinkers with ideas that can further translate into policy instruments, options, and action plans.” She added: “We believe that facilitating a senator for diaspora representation can imbue Jamaicans with access to the knowledge and expertise of its nationals overseas who are focused on national development and nationbuilding.” While members of the diaspora support Golding's recommendation, some Jamaicans do not think it is fair to have overseas citizens helping to make laws in the country. Why should Jamaicans overseas be determining whether the laws that the Senate reviews and passes for us living here are good

Feeling Gifted? Koffee Releases Solid 10-Track Debut Album Good vibes is the recurring theme across Jamaican Grammy-Award-winning star Koffee's debut album Gifted as the album bursts with positive and heartening messages. Gifted features something for everyone, especially those Jamaicans in the diaspora who are missing home. Across the ten songs on Gifted, Koffee alternates between expressing her gratitude to being alive while detailing the crime and violence that's plaguing Jamaica. The album wastes no time in grabbing the attention of attention, offering entertaining soundtracks to play through the upcoming summer months with punchy tracks celebrating moments of joy, combining traditional reggae beats with a modern hip-hop flair. While a song like Lonely puts a smile on your face, Defend, the shortest track on the album denounces gun crime and violence, and Shine features an acoustic guitar playing the most rudimentary reggae rhythm, her overall tone feels infectiously positive. Paying tribute to Jamaica with Where I'm From and West Indies, these songs embrace her patriotic spirit- black green and gold as well as love for the wider Caribbean community. The JAE5-produced single Pull Up is already a popular song. “Zero to a hundred in two, yeah, a so me flex pon you,” boasts the singer on a contagious beat and flavorful rhythm. This is the best example of her exuberant, sunny style, and is the perfect anthem for summer. Born Mikayla Simpson in Spanish Town, Jamaica, the Ardenne High School graduate first made her mark as a teen. In 2019 she released her EP, Rapture, which displayed her versatility and her remarkable wordplay with a mix of traditional reggae instrumentation and slick beats. The release made Koffee the youngest person and first woman to win the Grammy for Best Reggae Album.

Kyle Mayers Jumps 33 Spots in ICC Bowling Rankings

I will Never Sit with “my Dad to Watch a

Kyle Mayers, whose maiden fivewicket haul played a key role in the West Indies' victory in the recently ended Apex Test series against England, has made a massive 33-spot jump in the International Cricket Council (ICC) bowling ranks.

Tennis Match Again After her 7:5, 6:4 victory over Qiang Wang at the Miami Open, teenage tennis sensation Coco Gauff made a confident declaration about her dad. “I would never sit next to him watching a tennis match ever again,” she said, to much laughter from the press. She was responding to a question from CNW at the Miami Open press conference after her victory. Asked if she keeps her parents on her mind knowing that they are nervous, Gauff said (with a smile), “I don’t care if they are nervous; that is not my problem.” She said that her mother is always looking down during the matches. And regarding her dad? “I don’t look at him when I’m on the court. I can’t even watch a match with him. I watched a match with him while my friend was playing, and I was like, I can’t sit next to you watching matches.” After the match, her dad Corey said, “I just wanted her to get outta there in her first match in front of a home crowd.” He said his daughter did a lot of things they have been working on to get better, such as using more of the court and being more balanced. He said he knew she could hold her serve and wanted her to close it out with it. “She is a pretty smart player, and she was able to give a little of everything today.” About his nervousness, Corey gave a big “Oh yeah,” with a loud laugh. “For a while, I had stopped, then we started this progressive improvement, and I’m more nervous now. I have been struggling for the last year,” he admitted. And how does he deal with it? “Netflix, Prime, start think about something, I pray, calling on the ancestors. I try every tool in the book,” he said with a huge grin. He said that Coco’s mom handles the nervousness better. “I express it more, but I think it is worse for her though because she internalizes it and keeps it in a lot better.” He admitted that his wife’s way of dealing with the

nervousness keeps him in check. Coco said she chose to embrace the occasion rather than get nervous because she was playing with family and friends watching. She attributed her confidence and composure on the court today to her training. “You practice hard and prepare for the pressure, so I am confident and comfortable.” The first set went down to the wire after both players shared five games apiece. Gauff was leading 5:3 but lost her serve before Wang made it five all. Gauff then took the tie break 7:6. The second set was less competitive as Gauff used her control and placement with both her forehand and backhand to outclass Wang. Overall, Gauff won 61 percent of her first and second serves, including six aces. She however, unfortunately lost against Iga Świątek on March 28.

In the latest ICC Test rankings released on Wednesday, the seamer climbed from 81 to 48 – one of the biggest leaps in recent history. Kemar Roach, who moved two places up to number 12 remains the highest-ranked West Indies bowler. Jason Holder, meanwhile, dropped three places to 18. Mayers' movement comes on the heels of his heroics with the ball in the decisive third Test in which he had match figures of 27-17-41-7, including a career-best 5-18 in the second innings as West Indies won by 10 wickets on day four. It was the home team's first Test match win at the Grenada National Stadium, and they became the first team to lift the newly minted Richards-Botham trophy. Also making a big move in the rankings was batting hero Joshua Da Silva. He moved up 21 places to 63 on the table. The wicketkeeper pulled West Indies around in the first innings with a monumental maiden Test century. He made 100 not out, including 10 boundaries, off 257 balls, and earned the Apex Player of the Match award for the matchwinning effort which lifted West Indies from 128-7 to 297 all out. West Indies captain Kyle Brathwaite, adjudged Man-ofthe-Series for his 341 runs at an average of 85, is still the highest-ranked West Indies batsman at number 26, one spot higher than in the previous rankings. Nkrumah Bonner slid 11 places to 42, one spot below Jermaine Blackwood.
