Muslim Leader Accuses TT Government Of Abandoning Trinidadians In Iraq By Kathy Barrett
A
The head of the Islamic Front, Umar Abdullah, has accused the Trinidad and Tobago government of neglecting its citizens, after a local Muslim religious leader confirmed that three members of his family, including his daughter, had been sentenced each to 20 years in jail by an Iraqi court for alleged association with the Islamic State, (ISIS). Abdullah, who in the past had acknowledged nearly joining several Trinidadians as a frontline fighter for the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), told a radio audience that the government had failed to provide the necessary documents “so eventually they (the three), had to be tried before a court in Iraq.”

From Miss Jamaica to Miss Shea Moisture, Jamaica's Davina Bennett, is making news again. Bennett, 22, the second runner-up in Miss Universe 2017, recently signed an endorsement deal with Shea- Moisture, one of the largest, blackowned businesses in the United States. She will be the face of the brand's new Jamaican Black Castor Oil line, which offers a strengthening conditioner that is formulated with Jamaican Black Castor Oil and certified organic Shea Butter to nourish and strengthen damaged, brittle hair, reducing the appearance of breakage and shedding. The Black-owned hair care company had praised Bennett during her Miss Universe run, tweeting that she “rocked her natural crown and won our hearts,” in reference to her lush Afro. “I am proud to rock with my favorite hair brand, @SheaMoisture to continue redefining beauty for women and girls around the world,” Bennett posted on Instagram, which was viewed over 25,000 times.

Fans quickly reacted. “My goodie Jamaican queen, u had made history,” DJ Babba posted while MissDimplez1826 added: “Lovely!! You are a beautiful woman and you have inspired a lot of little girls all over because you look like them. All the best in your endeavors.” Shea Moisture celebrated the deal with the beauty queen by offering its customers 20-percent off its product prices. The company is a personal care company which focuses on shampoo, conditioner and body wash. It was founded in Harlem in 1991 by Liberians Nyema Tubman and Richelieu Dennis, and his mother Mary Dennis, both of whom were part of the Liberian Diaspora to the United States. The company was inspired by Dennis' Sierra Leonean grandmother, Sofi Tucker, who sold shea butter at a village market in Bonthe, Sierra Leone in 1912. “Even at that point in time, there were indications that they (Iraq) were willing to send these people back home here to serve their time in their country,” he was quoted as saying. “We have to see and make sure that citizens abroad receive a just and fair trial.” Earlier this month, Imam Nazim Mohammed told the Trinidad Guardian newspaper that his daughter Anisa Waheed Mohammed, and his two granddaughters, had each been sentenced to 20 years in jail by Iraq's courts for alleged association with ISIS. Mohammed said he officially confirmed the situation when he read a May 1st United Kingdom Telegraph newspaper report chronicling his daughter's trial in Baghdad's Central Criminal

Entrepreneur of the A Florida-based, Caribbean national has been honored with the title of International Entrepreneur of the Year. Dr. Kingsley Chin, a Jamaican-born spinal surgeon, inventor, entrepreneur, author and humanitarian, received the award recently from the Young Caribbean Professional Network, (YCPN), at the organization's national fundraising event in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Dr. Chin called it “an honor and a blessing,” adding that he has linked his Jamaican roots in all aspects of his success and is focusing currently on the importance of access to health care in Jamaica. He also revealed that he wants to leverage opportunities to enhance the tourism sector, the national economy, and the country as a whole. Dr. Chin serves as Managing Partner and CEO of KICVentures, a company he founded in 2005 which invests in high growth opportunities and follow-ons with a potential near-term exit. Dr. Chin's success with KICVentures can be attributed partly to his relentless drive, and partly to his personality that's uniquely suited to the field of health-tech. That personality hinges on the paradox of a deep grounding in scientific and technical knowledge coupled with a predisposition for unfettered, visionary thinking. In fact, in their first impressions of Dr. Chin, people are often struck by his insatiable predilection for big ideas. Chin was a 3-2 student, graduating from Columbia College with a minor in mathematics

in 1988 and from SEAS in 1989 with a major in electrical engineering. Following graduation, he took a nontraditional engineering path to gain two years of business experience as a management consultant for Andersen Consulting (Accenture) in New York City before heading to Massachusetts and matriculating at Harvard Medical School. He graduated from Harvard Medical School in 1996 with honors and from his Harvard Orthopaedic Residency in 2002 and went on to further specialize for a year as a Spine Fellow at Case Western Reserve University under the mentorship of the renowned Dr. Henry H. Bohlman. Dr. Chin has leveraged his degrees in engineering and medicine with his business experience to found several enterprises. In 2001, he founded MeduWeb.com, an Internetbased company focused on medical online distant learning using technology developed at MIT. He subsequently changed his focus to become an inventor of medical devices for spine surgery and has over 24 issued and pending patents. In 2005, he founded MANTIS, LLS, a company focused on developing minimally invasive spine surgery devices. He sold the MANTIS device to STRYKER Spine as a multimillion-dollar deal. The device was FDA-cleared

in 2007 and, in 2008, generated over $20 million in sales. Dr. Chin subsequently founded SpineFrontier, Inc., to continue his interest in developing medical devices but with a deeper and broader portfolio to address the minimally invasive spine surgery market and to expand spine surgery to treat elderly patients. In 2008, SpineFrontier released its first FDA-cleared device and subsequently has generated almost $7 million in revenues and was profitable the first year. Dr. Chin has shared his expertise with the next generation of orthopedic surgeons. He spent four years, between 2003-2007, as an assistant professor of orthopedic spine surgeon at the University of Pennsylvania where he was recruited to be the Chief Spine Surgeon in 2003.
In addition, he has 45 published articles, written 14 book chapters and 11 review chapters, edited the textbook, Orthopedic Key Review Concepts, and was an associate editor of Interventional Spine: An Algorithmic Approach and also established an Orthopedic Board review course taught by world-renowned surgeons in New York City to prepare residents to pass their Board examination. TT Gynecologist Freed On Rape Charges 15 Years Later A 71-year-old gynecologist was recently freed by a High Court in Trinidad after he was accused of raping a woman 15 years ago. Dr. Shauffie David Ali, who is also the owner and medical director of Gulf View Medical Centre, had gone on trial before Justice Hayden St. Clair-Douglas last month, charged with grievous sexual assault and rape. The woman, who was then 21, alleged that Ali raped her in his office on April 8, 2003. But the jury took less than an hour to find the medical practitioner not guilty.
Missing Plane Found In Jamaica With Three Dead Rescue teams in Jamaica have found the wreckage of the single engine Cessna 206F that disappeared while on an internal flight between the Sangster International Airport in St. James, and the Tinson Pen Aerodrome in capital, Kingston, last Thursday. The bodies of the three people on board, including two pilots, were also found by members of the Jamaica Defense Force (JDF). Lieutenant Colonel, Godfrey Sterling, said the small aircraft was located about two miles south of Duncans and that the Civil Aviation Authority was expected there on Saturday. The names of the dead have not been disclosed but the plane is owned by prominent businessman, Howard Levy, though he was not aboard. The Jamaica Civil Aviation Authority, (JCAA), in a statement said that the Cessna 206F aircraft was last seen on radar at 4:36 pm (local time) Thursday between Duncans and Clark's Town in Trelawny.
Dr Shauffie Ali thanks attorneys Pamela Elder SC and John Heath after he was acquitted on a rape charge at the San Fernando High Court in Trinidad & Tobago.
Bajans At Home And The Diaspora Expect Close Elections By Kathy Barrett & Garth Rose Like the leaders of the main political parties in Barbados, members of the Barbados Diaspora in South Florida are confident the party they support will be victorious in the May 24th general elections. Monday was Nomination in Barbados and the leaders of the two main political parties, Prime Minister Freundel Stuart, leader of the Democratic Labor Party (DLP); and Mia Mottley, leader of the main opposition Barbados Labor Party (BLP, expressed confidence in winning the election as candidates were being nominated to contest the polls. Both parties have nominated candidates to contest all 30 parliamentary seats in the elections. Although several other political parties
nominated candidates, political observers say the contest will be a straight one between the two established political foes. Prime Minister Stuart and leader of the DLP is taking the party into a general election for the second time. He told reporters he felt “quite good” about the chances of the party being returned to power. “I feel quite comfortable. I am looking forward with eager anticipation to the campaign and I am confident that we will pull it off,” Stuart said after being nominated to contest the St. Michael South constituency. He told reporters that he felt energized by the DLP base and those who attended the campaign launch meeting at the National Stadium on Sunday night. BLP leader, Mia Mottley, who is contesting
the St. Michael North East, said she was looking forward to the remaining days of the campaign, predicting a victory for the party after a 10-year wait on the opposition benches. In South Florida, Trudie Babb, who migrated from Barbados 10 years ago, said she is confident Mottley will win. “I was a former supporter of the DLP, but things not the same with Stuart,” Babb told CNW. “For one, the Barbados economy needs much improvement and I don't see Stuart doing it. Time for a change; Motley and the BLP will win.” But Babb's, compatriot, Lance Holder, a resident of Davie, who is a staunch supporter of the DLP “from I was a teenager in Barbados,” is confident Stuart and the DLP will be returned. “Stuart has the experience. Times are tough.
That's true. He is the leader we need back home to pull the country through the tough times,” he told CNW. On Monday, Mottley urged all Barbadian voters to ensure they are registered to vote on May 24th, adding: “The next few days we will continue to meet with the people and remain focus and deliver the message.” In Barbados most voters contacted by the CNW believe the election is too close to call. “I think there will be a large turnout of voters, but the results going to be very close,” said Dr. Margaret Girvan, a political observer in Bridgetown. “Trust me, either party has a good chance of winning. This is nothing new. The DLP only won by one vote in the last general elections in 2013.”

Is it old fashioned for a man to ask a woman's father, or mother, permission to marry his/her daughter? Sarah, Miami FL “Yes, it is old fashioned for a man to ask a woman's parents for their permission to marry their daughter. However, nothing is wrong with old fashioned ways! It's like we say: 'oldie but goodie!'”
Antonia, Pembroke Pines, FL “I do think it's old fashioned and slightly weird. I never really understood why people do that. If you are going to ask a woman to marry you it's because you love her. You aren't marrying the parents. Approval is nice but that should've been established in the dating era leading up to the proposal.” You can also look for us in Jamaica
Kyle, Fort Lauderdale, FL “I'm not trying to marry her parents,' so I wouldn't go seeking approval from her parents. When I propose, it will be because my partner and I are on the same page and want the same things, knowing we want and seek our future ahead with each other; that we are in love with each other - which romantically, emotionally and financially - is our relationship business, not one of her parents.”
Evelyn, Boston, MA “I do think it is old fashioned for a man to ask a woman's parents' permission to marry their daughter, but I can't quite say whether I agree with it or not because I can understand both sides. When a man seeks permission from his hopefully soon to be father in-law, he should already feel confident that the parents are loving and accepting of him for their daughter, therefore making it easier/less stressful when getting their 'permission.'”
Kasey, Plantation, FL “I think its old fashioned; however, the thought of my father approving, accepting and GIVING ME AWAY to the man I already love would be a joyous surprise in itself when my husband pops the question to me. Shows me it was more thought out and that it was important to him to have my father's blessing.”
Bianca, Miami, FL “I guess my opinion is a bit biased since my husband did ask my parents' permission before popping the question officially! To me it's old fashioned but it is the way to go, especially because we are very big about family, so knowing we had both our parents' blessings brought us one step closer to merging two families into one!”
Justin, Miami, FL “It is old fashioned but that is still what I did before asking my wife to marry me. She was the love of my life and our parents watched us grow with each other so both of our families were actually just waiting for the day. I'm glad we did it that way because we now have just one huge family.”
Tiffany, Hollywood, FL “Yes, it is old fashioned, but I find it to be honorable. If my father is willing to 'give me away' to my man, I know together, we have done right!”

MOTHER’S DAY
Huge Respect Due For Single Mothers This Sunday, South Floridians will join most of the world in commemorating the role of mothers. Of all the several annual commemorative days, Mother's Day is one of the most relevant. Simply put, the world wouldn't be populated without mothers; and the role of mothers go way beyond giving birth to children. There are millions of mothers worldwide, but special kudos go out this Mother's Day to mothers, who although, impregnated by men, are left to raise their child/children on their own. These single mothers are to be particularly honored given the tough challenges they often endure and overcome. Unfortunately, in Caribbean and CaribbeanAmerican communities, there is a trend for fathers to disappear, for a variety of reasons and not be around to assist in rearing their child/children. This incidence of absentee fathers and the struggles of single mothers have been a historical sociological problem in the Caribbean. In 1957, Jamaican anthropologist Edith Clarke, published “My Mother Who Fathered Me,” a book highlighting the breakdown of the traditional two parent family in Jamaica, the high incidences of paternal absence in families and the increase in maternal only families. Since then, the situation has not improved. In 2005, a UNICEF report revealed over 45 percent of Jamaican homes were headed only by mothers. This trend has not abated. This sociological problem is by no means unique to Jamaica and the rest of the Caribbean but is also prevalent here in America. Several studies indicate, especially in low-income families where single mothers struggle financially, the
male child is more likely to run afoul of the law. Most of these young men, despite, the efforts of their mothers to raise them with strict discipline, are more likely to join their peers in anti-social behavior because of the absence of a father or father figure in the home. It's not that single mothers aren't doing a good job; but there's a distinct role that father's play in a boy's life, which mothers cannot fill. Although it is commonly assumed that girls are better able to cope with the absence of fathers in their lives, sociologists determine this to be not true. Studies have determined that some young women who grow up without fathers usually seek a male figure to bond with early in life, often resulting in unexpected and unplanned pregnancies. This is not, whatsoever, assuming single mothers have failed in their maternal responsibilities. Absolutely not! Several single mothers, through severe adverse circumstances, have toiled, scraped and persevered to be mother and father to their children. Ninety-nine percent of single mothers will do anything to prevail with her responsibility of raising her child/children the best way they can. In several communities, there are outstanding cases of single mothers, who with great self-sacrifice, father their children to be successful citizens. Despite incidences of youth from single mother homes being afflicted by early pregnancies, ending up in juvenile detention centers or serving prison sentences, these incidences are in the minority. In South Florida, there are great examples of single mothers raising children who have received prized college scholarships and/or excelling in top echelon careers. The success these single mothers have been able to achieve with their children cannot be praised too much. As the economy becomes more difficult, more single mothers must juggle more than one job to maintain the household. With all the pressures of working

multiple jobs, they still must maintain domestic responsibilities of providing meals, doing laundry and maintaining clean, secure homes. The work of a single mother, without financial support from her child/children's father, is often grueling and cruel, but most of these women persevere. But even with these successes, it mustn't be lost in the social conversation that it isn't the role of mothers to father their children. Several studies and various data indicate that the role of a single mother, regardless of how dedicated she is to her role, gets harder, the older her child or children becomes, particularly in their teen years. This is where the role of mentors can be of a great value to single mothers. The gap in a child's live, created by the absence of a father and the excessive burden on a mother, can be bridged by mentors, male and female, who serve either as a supplementary maternal guide to the child, or a father figure where there are no fathers. There's no role as meaningful as that of a woman who relentlessly, with unusual strength, successfully raises her child/children, serving as their mother and father. This Mother's Day praise goes out to all mothers, but special praise to single mothers who have prevailed against great odds.

Haitian Comedian Shares #MeToo Story Haitian comedian Gaëlle Bien-Aimé is all laughs on stage. But the 30-year-old comic and playwright is opening up about a darker past and sharing her own #MeToo story. According to Bien-Aimé, she was raped at the age of 6. "I could recognize my rapist but I didn't know his name. He used to climb over the mango tree. I couldn't tell my mother," said Bien-Aimé while struggling to hold back tears in a video from Loop Haiti, an online news site. “I felt suddenly dirty, and I thought that people were going to judge me. I had kept this for myself because I was very much ashamed,” she says of the experience. The internationally acclaimed Bien-Aimé, however, feels the experience has made her stronger and emboldened by the global #MeToo movement, she says she feels it her responsibility as both an artist and a feminist to contribute to a larger dialogue. Especially since she has dedicated her life to combining her strong passion for theater with inspiring women around her. She told PRI that she is drawing strength from the responses she got from sharing her story. "I am feeling better because there are a lot of women that have written me on Facebook. Bridge That Killed Six Had Cracks – Report A Miami bridge, which collapsed on March 15th killing six people including a Jamaican immigrant, had shown cracks from weeks before. The Miami Herald reports that documents from Florida International University show the cracks were found in late February. The structure collapsed March 15, killing six people. Photos show the cracks in a piece of a support truss on the north end of the span where the collapse began. Bridge engineers told the newspaper that the cracks suggest a problem that should have been addressed before the section that failed was moved into place. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the cause of the collapse which killed Jamaican Navarro 'Varo' Brown, 37. Brown was a bridge worker on the 950-ton span Florida International University, (FIU), pedestrian walkway at Southwest 8th Street and 109th Avenue with Structural Technologies VSL.

court last month. In the report, the 53year-old Mohammed, a grandmother, said she'd been in a holding cell handcuffed to another woman and that she'd cried about her condition, saying she wanted to go home to Trinidad and Tobago. She was quoted as saying she'd “watched ISIS videos with her husband and two daughters and we decided we wanted to go and be part of an Islamic society.” The newspaper reported that apart from the Trinidadians, there were other women of various nationalities in custody. Abdullah told radio listeners that Mohammed and her children should be allowed to return home and face the local courts.
Is Sorry Enough In University of Florida 'Yanking' Incident? Is sorry really enough? Some of the nearly two dozen black students yanked off stage during the University of Florida weekend's spring graduation ceremony last weekend say an apology from the institution's president is not enough. The President of the University of Florida had apologized after a video surfaced of the black students being physically dragged off by an usher on the stage after they attempted a celebratory dance. Oliver Telusma, one of the students pulled off, told Good Morning America that sorry wasn't enough. “In general, I don't think
I've ever been handled in that manner, not even by my parents,” Telusma said. “It's kind of embarrassing, kind of degrading.” Telusma, a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity, added to NBC: “The interactions of the marshal were certainly racialized. Because we are a black Greek letter organization and those moves are symbolic and important to our organization.” President Fuchs has acknowledged that the official “inappropriately physically rushed a number of students across the stage.” He also said they would no longer carry out the yanking “practice.”

MOTHER’S DAY
The Origins Of
Mother's Day Motherhood has been celebrated since ancient times. The ancient Greeks paid homage to Rhea, the Mother of Gods; and there are records of the ancient Romans worshiping a mother Goddess known as Cybele as early as 260 BC. Festivals took place in the spring which was the most fertile time of the year. The more modern way of honoring mothers began in England in the 1600s where Mothering Sunday was observed on the fourth Sunday of Lent. This day is also known as 'Refreshment Sunday,' the only day when you are allowed to eat or do whatever you have given up for Lent. Not surprisingly, families came together and took the opportunity to party with a big meal at which mother was treated as the guest of honor. Traditionally, mothers were given posies of flowers and a cake. The term 'Mothering Sunday' has now fallen into disuse and has mostly been replaced by 'Mother's Day,' which is used the world over. In the US, there were several attempts to introduce a Mother's Day as a way to celebrate peace and heal the scars of war. Julia Ward, who wrote the words to the Battle Hymn of the Republic, suggested the idea in 1872. But the idea didn't really take off until Anna Jarvis campaigned for the establishment of a Mother's Day to commemorate her own mother who died in 1905. Ward's mother herself had tried to establish a similar holiday, Mother's Friendship Day, to heal the pain of the Civil War.

Mother's Day Cabaret
Jarvis
The first Mother's Day in the US was held in 1907, when Julia Ward held a ceremony to honor her mother. She then successfully campaigned for a formal holiday to honor mothers and by 1911 most states had taken up the idea. This was followed in 1914 by a declaration by President Woodrow Wilson that Mother's Day should be celebrated as a national holiday on the second Sunday in May. The idea quickly spread to Canada and Mexico and many more countries throughout the world. The commercialization of Mother's Day quickly followed, much to the disgust of Anna Jarvis who was arrested in 1923 at a Mother's Day festival for trying to stop women selling flowers. Ironically Anna Jarvis campaigned for many years against the commercialization of Mother's Day, the day she had worked so hard to establish. Although she had no children of her, each Mother's Day, Anna received hundreds of cards from all over the world. Anna Jarvis died in 1948.

Hamilton: The Exhibition for chicago
The creators of “Hamilton: The Musical” are bringing “Hamilton: The Exhibition” to Chicago. Show creator, Puerto Rico roots, LinManuel Miranda, says he will be debuting popup museum so museum goers can dig deeper into the life of the Caribbean-born immigrant turned US founding father, Alexander Hamilton. The pop-up museum will be housed in a heated tent about the size of a football field on Northerly Island in November and is expected to be open for six months. Miranda will narrate the audio tour, featuring historical artifacts, like Alexander Hamilton's desk, as well as providing an immersive excursion into the Revolutionary War period. Music from the show will also play a featured role in the exhibit. Alexander Hamilton was born out of wedlock in 1757 in Charlestown, Nevis. He would grow up to become an American statesman and one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. He was an influential interpreter and promoter of the U.S. Constitution, as well as the founder of the nation's financial system, the Federalist Party, the United States Coast Guard, and The New York Post newspaper. As the first Secretary of the Treasury, Hamilton was the main author of the economic policies of the George Washington administration. He took the lead in the funding of the states' debts by the Federal government, as well as the establishment of a national bank, a system of tariffs, and friendly trade relations with Britain. His vision included a strong central government led by a vigorous executive branch, a strong commercial economy, with a national bank and support for manufacturing, plus a strong military and was active in ending the legality of the international slave trade. Hamilton was shot in a duel with US Vice President Aaron Burr and died on July 12, 1804.

Chris Gayle Falters
Chris Gayle suffered his first real failure of the Indian Premier League when he perished at the hands of exciting Barbadian speedster Jofra Archer on Sunday. However, Kings XI Punjab still overcame that hiccup to beat Rajasthan Royals by eight wickets in India. In pursuit of 153 at the Holkar Cricket Stadium, Kings XI reached their target in the penultimate over with eight balls left, to take sole possession of third place in the standings on 12 points. Opener Lokesh Rahul top-scored with a polished unbeaten 84 from 54 deliveries while Karun Nair struck 31 and Australian Marcus Stoinis, an unbeaten 23. Gayle, with three half-centuries and a hundred in his previous five innings, failed to have a major impact as he was dismissed for eight in the fourth over with the score of 23. Rahul then put on 50 for the third wicket with Nair to pull Kings XI around from 29 for two in the fifth over and added a further 68 in an unbroken fifth wicket partnership with Stoinis, to revive the innings from 87 for four in the 13th over.
Reported By David Maitland Lauderhill Jammers got the better of St. Bess for a second time this past weekend even as Tropics defeated Port St. Lucie as the South Florida Cricket competition continued. On Sunday April 29th at John Stretch Park, St Bess won the toss and decided to take first strike. But struggling at 25 for 2 in 7.4 overs, O'Brian Jones and Brian Gayle came together and staged a recovery, taking the score to 141 for 3. However, Jones soon went for 35, which included 3 fours and 1 six and Gayle soon followed for a well-played 66, including 7 fours and 2 sixes with the score at 143 for 4.

Legendary Pakistan Spinner Named Windies Spin Bowling Coach Legendary Pakistan spinner, Mushtaq Ahmed, has been signed by Cricket West Indies to teach spin bowling techniques to the beleaguered Windies team for a month. The 47-year-old leg spinner, who claimed 185 Test and 161 ODI wickets during his stellar career, is expected to join up with the West Indies squad later this month as the team begins preparation to face Sri Lanka in an upcoming home series. Prior to being appointed to the post, Ahmed worked in coaching positions with the Pakistan Super League, Indian Premier League, Surrey as well as the English Cricket Board. The former spinner also served as a bowling consultant to the England team for six years, a very successful period which saw the team win the T20 World Cup and multiple Ashes.
