Bruce Golding to address Town Hall Series in Lauderhill
Good Over Evil
A range of issues of relevance to the Diaspora will be addressed on Saturday, May 19, when former Prime Minister of Jamaica Orette Bruce Golding gives the keynote address at the GraceKenendy and Western Union (GKMS) 2018 Town Hall Series at the Lauderhill Performing Arts Center. The 2018 Town Hall series is being held under the theme “The Caribbean Diaspora: In Pursuit of a Better Tomorrow…Today, Golding, 70, was sworn into office as Jamaica's 8th Prime Minister in September 2007 but resigned in 2011 in the midst of controversy related to the extradition of Jamaican Don Christopher “Dudus” Dudus'Coke.
Capleton Condent Of Victory Of “Good Over Evil” Amidst Rape Charges Reported By Kathy Barrett
Popular Jamaican reggae and dancehall singer, Capleton, says he is confident of “the victory of good over evil.” The artist, whose real name is Clifton Bailey, made the comments after emerging on bail Monday following his arrest and imprisonment over the weekend on a rape charge. A hairdresser reportedly claimed that she went to a New Kingston hotel to groom the 51year-old entertainer's hair, but he held her down and had sexual intercourse with her against her will. The woman made a report to the police on May 2nd. Last Friday, detectives assigned to the Centre for the Investigation of Sexual Offence and Child Abuse (CISOCA) in Jamaica, arrested Capleton. He spent the weekend in jail and when he
appeared in court Monday, the judge ordered bail amounting to J$200,000 and told the entertainer to refrain from contacting the complainant. Capleton's attorney, Christopher Townsend, says he is confident his client will be exonerated and confirmed that the woman who filed the rape claim is also being investigated for extortion. “We anticipate that she will also be in custody shortly. I am quite concerned because it certainly demonstrates that there is one side of the police force that is blind to what the other side is doing,” he said. Capleton's manager, Claudette Kemp, added that “demands were being made on the artist and he decided to make a report to the police.” She told Onstage TV that this was communicated to the person who was making the demands and she subsequently filed a report of rape with CISOCA. Kemp said Capleton showed up with his attorney for questioning at the Half Way Tree police station and he was then subsequently arrested.
“This won't mek Capleton get evil. I will continue to do good,” Capleton added in a statement to the media from a car which was ready to take him away to his residence after he was sprung Monday. Capleton was born in St. Mary Jamaica and got his first big break in 1989, when Stewart Brown, owner of a Toronto-based sound called African Star, flew the untested artist to Canada for a stage show alongside Ninjaman and Flourgon. He recorded the song that began to establish his significant place in Dancehall,

Since his resignation, Golding has served Jamaica as a consultant on local and international business and also remains a member of the Jamaica Labor Party (JLP). “We are very excited for this opportunity to engage once again with the Caribbean diaspora in the United States. Letter Award For Daughter Of Popular Jamaican Singer Dominic Stephenson, daughter of Jamaican R&B, dancehall and reggae singer and producer, Richie Stephens, has been presented with a 'Letter Award' by the University of Toronto Scarborough. Stephenson, a UTSC alum, was presented with the honor for bringing together the campus group “Future Black Physicians,” an organization that received the University's “Best New Club” award. The University of Toronto Scarborough Letter Awards were established in the fall of 2000 by the Office of Student Affairs & Services with the support of the Council on Student Services. The awards aim to recognize graduating students for significant contributions to campus life. The club, originally created in 2015 and revived by Stephenson and founder Gary Wilson, hosts networking events, preparation for applying to medical school such as practice MCATs, and Q & A's with current black medical school students and physicians. Stephenson told UTSC News that her interest in creating a pre-med group such as FBP came out of her experience as an immigrant to Canada three years ago. She and her Jamaican family immigrated from New York after she was accepted to U of T Scarborough's Health Studies program – a step on her path to medical school. That path was complicated with challenges Stephenson encountered once settling in Ontario.
Stephenson
“I was so overwhelmed by being in a new country, new school, not knowing anybody and I struggled to stay on track with planning for medical school,” Stephenson was quoted as saying. She spoke with fellow students, and leaders in the U of T community and quickly discovered she was not alone in her concerns and desire to connect. Stephenson brainstormed with like-minded students and joined forces with Wilson, who founded the 2015 Future Black Physicians and is double majoring in Human Biology and
Awardees of the University of Toronto Letter Awards 2018
Neuroscience as well as minoring in Psychology and Music & Culture. “Dominic brought herself, along with a few other people, to inject FBP with new life,” says Wilson. Since 2016 and with support from other groups, FBP has organized several official events such as the Ignite COS Conference –where physicians spoke about their experiences studying in Canada, the Caribbean and the United States – and the Black Mental Health Workshop – a workshop featuring community social worker Racquel Hamlet who facilitated an interactive workshop on black mental health, addressing stigma and the supports in the community. “It's great to realize that our hard work has been recognized,” says Stephenson. “We just want to keep moving forward and reaching out
to as many people as possible.” Stephenson was also lauded for participating in a tri-campus Black Mental Health Art Project and volunteering with ARTSIDEOUT, Caribbean Connection. She has also worked with Student Life and currently serves as the student representative on the Campus Affairs Committee. Her father, Savanna-la-Mar, Westmoreland-born Richie Stephens, was part of the group Soul II Soul, which won two Grammys. He recorded at Motown and ultimately established his own label, Pot of Gold Records. Stephens received the Jamaican Governor-General's Achievement Award in 2006 in recognition of his contributions to civic, social and recreational projects in and around the parish of Westmoreland.

TT Gov’t Outlines Measures To Deal With Terrorism
Jamaica's Opposition Party Files Court Motion Over National ID System Jamaica's opposition People's National Party, (PNP), recently filed a motion in the nation's Supreme Court against the government, seeking to delay the implementation of the controversial National Identification System, (NIDS). The NIDS is intended to provide a comprehensive and secure structure to enable the capture and storage of identity information for all Jamaicans, where each citizen will be provided with a randomized nine-digit National Identification Number (NIN), which they will have for life. The roll-out and management of the NIDS will be handled by a new agency, the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA), which will replace the Registrar General's Department (RGD) and provide more enhanced services. Opposition Leader Dr. Peter Phillips says the system is a violation of people's privacy and the opposition took particular issue with various sections of the Act, which speaks to data protection and the Jamaican passport. The PNP also alleges the NIDS infringes on the right to security of the person; the right to equality before the law; the right to privacy; the right to a passport; the right to protection of property rights; and the right to due process. Last November, Prime Minister Andrew Holness, said the establishment of a reliable NIDS for Jamaicans was pivotal to the government's thrust to combat corruption. The Senate approved the National Identification and Registration Bill after a prolonged debate and 168 amendments.
The Trinidad and Tobago government says it has strengthened internal structures to deal with terrorism as it recognizes the global threat posed by the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, (ISIS). National Security Minister, Edmund Dillon, speaking in Parliament, said measures locally have been heightened to deter nationals from being enticed by ISIS ideology. He said these structures include the Strategic Services Agency, the Special Branch of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service, as well as the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter Financing of Terrorism (AML/CFT) Compliance Unit. The United States has publicly expressed concerned about Trinidad and Tobago nationals joining ISIS, and Dillon responding to an opposition question on the situation said the Keith Rowley government has “strengthened internal structures to treat with the subject of terrorism.” Dillon told Parliamentarians one of the key initiatives of the government to dissuade nationals from participating in activities on behalf of ISIS is the launch of the National Counter Terrorism (NCTS) Strategy.

Are you interested in the upcoming wedding between Britain's Prince Harry and American actress Meghan Markle? Will you watch it? Michelle, Plantation, FL “Yes, I will for sure be waking up early Saturday morning to watch this highly anticipated wedding. I'll also be recording it on the DVR! It will actually be the first Royal wedding I've watched but Meghan Markle isbeautiful and I admire the fact that they are marrying for love instead of typical royalty practices.”
Tia, Miami, FL “I will absolutely be waking up early to attend a watch party for the event. I am quite certain that Prince Harry's mother, Princess Diana, would be very proud of his selection for a bride. Prince Harry has grown up and changed his image and now is marrying a bi-racial American woman who is a divorcee, which at one time was not an accepted practice in the royal family.”

Daniella, Sunrise, FL “Yes, I will be up bright and early to watch the Royal wedding. I am beyond excited for the wedding of the year. I can't wait to watch it! I hope the weather is perfect for the happy couple. I'm also dying to see her wedding dress.
Ava, Boston, MA “I am very interested in the upcoming wedding between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. I have watched the royal weddings of Prince Diana and of her 1st born, Prince William to Kate. I am definitely waking up nice and early to watch this wedding with my husband, sisters and girlfriends!”
Amanda, Miami, FL “I am sure Prince Henry and Meghan Markle's wedding will be as spectacular as his mother, Princess Diana and brother Prince William's. I am certainly waking up early to watch this Royal wedding! I will be attending a watch party for the wedding with co-workers and close friends.”
Liam, Miramar, FL “No, I'm not interested in the Royal wedding so I'm not waking up early to watch it. However, my sister and mom want me to record it for them so I'm doing it for them but I am personally sick of hearing about this wedding of privileged people, while down the street people are living in shop doorways.”
Shamara, Pembroke Pines, FL “Yes, I am really excited to watch the royal wedding. I have my alarm set for 6 a.m. Being that my mom is from England and was living in England during the Princess Diana era, it's exciting to see her son Prince Harry marry a half-Black American woman and make her a part of the royal family. I'm excited to see what she's going to wear and who is going to be walking her down the aisle now that her father is unable to make it.”

Stop Potential South Florida Brain Drain Traditionally, May is graduation month across the US, with students graduating from various colleges. Most of these new graduates will be embarking on their chosen careers related to their new academic qualifications. Based on recent reports, unemployment levels fell to 3.9 percent nationally and in Florida in April, the lowest percentage since 2000. Therefore, on the surface, the job market looks encouraging for these graduates. However, while there seems to be plenty of jobs available, especially in the healthcare and hospitality industries, below the surface, salaries have lagged behind increases in job offers. Nationwide, salaries increased by 2.9 percent over the last year, and in Florida, by just 2.7 percent. These low salaries are turning away college graduates, most of whom are burdened with large student loan debt. While in South Florida, several employers are prepared to employ new college graduates, there is evidence that some graduates are not too keen on working in the region. There has been regret expressed by some parents, including parents in the CaribbeanAmerican community, that sons and daughters, especially those who graduated from colleges in the New York-Tri-State area, and Washington D.C., are accepting jobs in these cities rather
than returning to South Florida. Several Caribbean-American students who graduated outside of South Florida have indicated to CNW that they are seeking jobs outside the region, as they found comparatively better job opportunities. Also, job placement counselors at some South Florida colleges stated that several graduates have stated their willingness to work outside the region, if appropriate job opportunities arise. The problem isn't jobs are unavailable in South Florida, but rather some graduates believe cities outside South Florida provide more attractive incentives for their new careers. These incentives include not only better salaries, but more affordable housing and easier commute through public transportation. Most graduates are entering the workforce with a huge financial liability. It is estimated that the average student loan debt of Florida graduates with bachelor's degree is $24,050, and up to $34,000 for students with advanced degrees. Although the Obama administration introduced incentives to make student loan repayment easier, it's still a burden. Most graduates need jobs with salaries that enable them to adequately repay the loan and with sufficient disposable income remaining to meet their other expenses. Compared to salaries paid in other metropolitan regions, salaries in South Florida are low, averaging approximately $45,000 to $47,500 annually. Accordingly, some graduates are attracted by higher salaries paid in places like New York City, although they are likely to pay higher taxes. Another reason why some graduates decide

to leave South Florida, is the cost of accommodation. While some graduates return to live in the family home, more want to set up their own independent homestead. However, in recent years, the cost of rent has increased significantly. The average cost of a onebedroom apartment in the suburbs of Miami-Dade County is $1,350, and $1,200 in Broward County. This is a high rate for someone just starting their career. On the other hand, rental agents in the Orlando metropolitan area have indicated that they have waiting lists up to six months from young college graduates from South Florida for apartments in the area. Several new businesses have either expanded or opened in the Orlando area, where a one-bedroom apartment averages $800 monthly. Another concern some graduates expressed in working in South Florida is the difficult commute. For those living in the Southwest Miami, and West Broward suburbs, the commute to jobs in Miami or Fort Lauderdale can average 60 minutes each way, and up to two hours if they encounter traffic congestions. In addition to student loan repayment, high rent, a reliable, gasefficient vehicle is a necessity for graduates working in South Florida, since public transportation is limited. In comparison, the relative ease of public transportation in Washington D.C. and New York City enhances the attraction to accept job offers in those cities. These are formidable challenges for South Florida employers to compete with. These employers aren't expected to remedy problems of rising rent, and the difficult commute. Nonetheless, they can entice graduates to remain and work in South Florida by offering salaries and related benefits that potentially offset the challenges these graduates face, and deter a possible serious brain drain from the region. And, with employment rising, the state government should now focus on increasing the absurd minimum wage of $8.25 per hour to a living wage of, say, $11. With most businesses experiencing significant savings from the Trump administration's tax break, they can pay higher minimum wages. This would form the foundation for boosting higher wages generally across Florida's job market.

Haitian Government Building Attacked The Haitian government has condemned what it described as a “despicable act” after gunmen fired shots at the building which houses the central office of the Electricity of Haiti (EDH) last weekend.
Haitian Church Vandalized In Port St. Lucie Police are looking for a man who vandalized a Haitian church in Port St. Lucie, Fl even as worshippers are demanding action. New Jerusalem Church of God member Marie Leger looked over security camera footage of a man walking outside her church and smashing the cameras. The video shows a man in sunglasses, an orange shirt and blue shorts, walking directly toward one camera and smacking it. He had earlier reversed his car into a parking space but kept his license plate out of view. Some members believe the man targeted the church because it is the only black church in the area. The church has only been on Port St. Lucie Boulevard for seven months.
The Ministry of Communication said that the police and judicial authorities have been called upon to investigate the incident and to find “the actors of this terrorist act.” The government said significant damage had been done to the building and it “condemns with the greatest vehemence this despicable act perpetrated against a public building.” The authorities gave no reasons why the building in the heart of the capital had come under attack. They did not say whether anyone had been injured during the incident that occurred over two nights.
Palm Beach Teacher Removed Golding Town Hall After 'Third World' Comment from A1
A Palm Beach Gardens High School teacher has been removed from the classroom, pending an investigation into an interaction with a Haitian student, in which the teacher refers to the country as “some third-world island country." A video of the incident was posted on the Facebook page of the student's family and has received tens of thousands of views. In the video, the teacher says to the
student: “It's called a door, let me show you how it works,” the teacher said. “I don't know how it works where you're from, down in some third-world island country, where they don't got them. Let me show you what it's like in America.” The family of the student said they first went to the school to address the issue but when no action was taken, they posted the video online. Late last week, Palm Beach Gardens High parents got this call from the principal that called the verbal interaction “potentially inappropriate” and said “the matter is being addressed by professional standards at this time.”

The GKMS/Western Union Town hall series commenced in 2012, with the aim of fostering engagement with customers in the primary Caribbean markets. To date, the event has been held in New York, Atlanta, Florida, Canada and the United Kingdom. Allen

The levy would be used to enhance funding for school resource officers, including individual charter schools with more than 900 students; hire District school security staff; increase compensation to recruit and retain highly-qualified District teachers; and fund other essential instruction-related expenses preserving important programs in District schools. The Florida Legislature continues to fund education at one of the lowest levels in the nation. For the fiscal year commencing on July 1, 2018, the legislature has provided an increase in the Base Student Allocation in the amount of 47
cents per student. In fact, the total new funding for Broward County Public Schools, including funding that must be used as directed by the state, is $52 per student. This is the lowest funding increase of all 67 counties across the state of Florida. In addition, the state funding for more School Resource Officers (SROs) to comply with SB 7026 falls significantly short of the funding required to provide a minimum of one SRO per school. As the next step in the process, the School Board is asking the Broward County Board of County Commissioners to approve the date for the referendum, and to direct the Broward County Supervisor of Elections to place the referendum on the August 28, 2018, Broward County election ballot, pursuant to the provisions of the election laws of the state of Florida.

Why Can Americans
“Plead The Fifth?”
By Attorney Wolde Rose
Last month, we focused on clarifying for readers the meaning and implication of the client/attorney privilege, an issue that has been in the news lately. Since then, the issue related to people in legal cases “pleading the Fifth” has also been making the news. So what does this entail?
“Just Plead The Fifth”
Generally, the term “Pleading the Fifth,” means Americans who are being investigated in a law case or appearing in court, have the right not to answer questions to avoid selfincrimination. This right not to cooperate with investigators or with court room lawyers originate from Amendment V in the United States Constitution. It is contained in the Bill of Rights, which among other rights, protects individuals from being compelled to testify against themselves in criminal cases. Usually, to protect their clients from damaging themselves in a legal case, lawyers will sometimes advise their clients when being questioned by an investigator or opposing lawyer to say: “I claim the Fifth, so as not to incriminate myself.” This may be extremely frustrating to the court or investigator, as for question after question, the defendant can repeat this line. But it is not illegal. It's a right offered by the US' Founding Fathers. This legal privilege ensures a defendant cannot be forced to be a witness at their own trial. That's the reason why several attorneys are
very weary of placing their clients on the witness stand during those client's trial. If the client agrees to be a witness and the attorney agrees to put that client on the stand, the client is not entitled to Plead the Fifth during crossexamination. Once the defendant takes the witness stand, this particular Fifth Amendment right is considered waived throughout the trial. The Fifth Amendment stipulates people charged with felonies can be tried only on an indictment by a grand jury. While defendants are bound to take the witness stand if facing these grand juries, they still can Plead the Fifth. unless they choose to answer a specific question. When a defendant pleads the Fifth, jurors in a trial are not allowed to take this as an indication that the defendant is guilty of the charges for which he is charged. Neither can

prosecutors ask the juror to draw a verdict of guilty if the defendant refuses to testify against himself. It should be noted that the right to plead the Fifth is not only applicable to police investigations or criminal trials but is applicable to civil trials. If it is possible that the charges in the civil trial could lead to the defendant facing criminal charges, his lawyer have the right to advise that defendant to plead the Fifth. But, importantly, pleading the Fifth in a civil trial does not preclude a jury taking that plea as an admission of guilt. Therefore, in civil trials, most lawyers, will advise the client to claim ignorance, by responding “I don't/cannot recall” to questions from the court instead of pleading the Fifth. Also, the right to plead the Fifth is not only related to a defendant in a court case. Any

witness, who is concerned the evidence he/she gives could come back to adversely implicate him/her in a criminal manner, also have the right to plead the Fifth. But unlike defendants in a court case, witnesses who claim the Fifth can do so to selective questions, and don't have to claim this right immediately they take the witness stand. However, under US law, a witness may be forced to testify by the opposing attorney by getting a court approved subpoena to get the witness to answer any question asked. Other than the having the right to plead the Fifth, people arrested in the United States are allowed to protect themselves from selfincrimination. Accordingly, the arresting officer is mandated to read the individual being arrested his/her Miranda rights which offers him/her “the right to remain silent” or else anything said may be used against that individual in a future trial. Those faced with the unfortunate circumstance of being arrested, or faced with a trial in court, must always be aware that remaining silent is one of their best asset. It may be a natural instinct for someone wrongly arrested or placed on criminal trial to want to talk freely to protect their innocence. This is definitely not advisable, as it is so easy for one to incriminate one's self and not even be aware of this by simply talking. Those arrested and charged with a crime, of course have the right to fully disclose any relevant information to their attorney who can protect that information through client/attorney privilege. But when arrested they have the right to remain silent, and, in court they have the right not to testify in their trial by “pleading the Fifth.”

Dreamers Should File DACA Renewals Now Dreamers Should File DACA Renewal Applications At Least 150 Days Before Expiration By Immigration Attorney Caroly Pedersen
In September 2017, the Trump administration abruptly announced cancellation of the DACA, (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals), program beginning March 5, 2018. But as the deadline approached, several federal courts blocked the administration from ending the program for Dreamers who already had DACA status. So even as the March 5th deadline has passed, the Trump administration is currently still required by the federal courts to allow DACA renewals, but not to accept new applications. However, this is not a permanent solution, and a federal court could allow President Trump to terminate the program in the future. As a result, Dreamers are advised not to become complacent and leave renewals until the last moment - since the program could be terminated at any time. This means that DACA renewals should be filed as early as possible, meaning 150 days before the work authorization card expires. USCIS processing of DACA renewals can be slow and those who fail to file early renewals can find themselves with expired work permits, waiting for renewal. This can mean loss of a job and driver's license in some states
Recommendations For Renewing DACA Status: The DACA renewal Fee is $495, which includes both renewed DA status and Work Authorization. Applicants who are over age 31 are still eligible as long as they were under age 31 when the policy became effective on June 15, 2012 and currently hold DACA status. Be sure to file your renewal no earlier or later than 150 days from the date your current card expires. If you are representing yourself, fully complete the DACA renewal forms and write “Renewal Request” in large letters on the bottom of each form.
New Rule Targets Immigration Status Of International Students A new rule, recently issued by the USCIS, drastically changes existing immigration policies relating to those in the U.S. on student visas and exchange visitors. Under the new policy, beginning in August this year, students and exchange visitors on F, J, and M non-immigrant status (and their dependents) who fail to maintain their status in the U.S., may be subject to reentry “bars” of up to ten years, depending upon how long they remained in unlawful status prior to leaving the U.S. Prior to the new policy, individuals in these visa status' were exempt from the bars to re-entry, allowing students and exchange visitors who violated their visas and remained in the U.S., to be allowed to reenter the U.S. without any legal impediments as a result of their previous overstay in the U.S. Beginning August 9, 2018, F, J and M visa holders who fail to maintain status before and after that date, will begin accruing unlawful status. Failure to maintain status includes those who violate the terms of their visa, those who drop out of school or no longer pursue a fulltime course of study and those who remain inside the U.S. past the expiration of authorized employment or grace period. Those who accrue 180 days of unlawful status and then leave the U.S. will be barred from re-entering for 3 years and those who overstay by 365 or more days will be barred for 10 years. This policy is just a part of the administration's overall crack-down and restrictions on legal immigration visas.

The Kingston-born Fitz-Henley, 41, lit up the screen as she joined Murray Fraser in chronicling the courtship and love story between Prince Harry and his new fiancée. The film documents from the moment the couple met after being set up by friends, through their initial courtship when they were able to keep their romance under wraps, and ultimately the intense global media attention surrounding their relationship and Meghan's life as a divorced bi-racial American actress. “Harry & Meghan: A Royal Romance” was executive produced by Merideth Finn and Michele Weiss and written by Scarlett Lacey and Terrence Coli. He also told the site that he suffered a heart attack six days ago but checked himself out of the hospital to attend the nuptials. However, “he's now decided not to go because he doesn't want to embarrass the Royal Family or his daughter.” Presiding Bishop Curry will join The Dean of Windsor, The Rt. Revd. David Conner, who will conduct the Service. The Most Revd. and Rt. Hon. Justin Welby, Archbishop of Canterbury, will officiate as the couple make their marriage vows.

Good Over Evil from A1 "Alms House," in 1992. The tune became a big hit in the dancehall, followed up immediately by "Music is a Mission" and the massive hit "Tour." Tunes such as "Tour" and "Wings of the Morning" earned him a deal with Russell Simmons' Def Jam Recordings, which culminated in the 'Prophecy' and 'I-Testament' albums of the mid-1990s. His other songs include “Jah Jah City,” “Good In Her clothes,” and “The Day Will Come.” Capleton is also referred to as King Shango, King David, The Fireman and The Prophet. Bob Marley's Granddaughter To Sue California Police By Garth A. Rose
African-Americans have become alarmed recently by recent reports of police being summoned by white Americans to apprehend innocent black people. Two of the most recent cases involved a black Yale University who fell asleep while studying, and three black women leaving an Airbnb in California. The incident involving the black guests leaving the Airbnb rental in California has piqued the interest of Caribbean-Americans in particularbecause the impacted guests included Donisha Prendergast, the granddaughter of late Jamaican and international reggae icon, Bob Marley. According to reports, Prendergast, a filmmaker and motivational speaker, and three female black colleagues, including NigerianCanadian visual artist Komi-Oluwa Olafimihan, and filmmaker Kelly Fyffe-Marshal, and an unnamed white woman, where leaving an Airbnb rental in Rialto, California on April 30th. They were seen leaving by a white female resident who waved to them in greeting. However, when no one in the group waved back at the resident, she suspected them to be criminals and summoned the Rialto police. When the police came, they temporarily detained the three black women, although they explained and provided proof they had rented the Airbnb. In the aftermath of the incident, according to another report in the Jamaican Gleaner, Prendergast has retained attorneys to represent her and her two black associates in a pending lawsuit against the Rialto Police Department, which claims the women were victims of racial profiling. Prendergast's legal team includes civilrights attorneys Jasmine Rand of Rand Law, L.L.C., a Miami-based civil litigation firm located in Coral Gables, and Benjamin Crump of Ben Crump Law, who formerly represented the families of the late Michael Brown, and South Florida's Trayvon Martin. According to documents submitted to The Gleaner by Prendergast's legal team, the three black women were lawfully present at the Airbnb property, and not involved in any criminal activity when called by the white woman. The team further claims that the police action was “motivated by race” fueled by the neighbor who called the police claiming: “Three
Donisha Prendergast (center) with colleagues who were temporarily detained in Rialto, California
black people were stealing stuff.” The documents cited Marley's granddaughter and the two other women, were surrounded by several police vehicles, while a helicopter hovered above and further revealed that the officers told the women they were under investigation for the commission of a felony and were being detained. Emphasizing that the detention of the three black women were motivated by race, the submitted documents according to the Gleaner, also cited that while the white neighbor complained that three black women were “removing stuff” from the Airbnb, there was a fourth woman who was white. As reported in the Gleaner, the legal documents states: "This incident was undeniably motivated by the neighbor's explicit racial bias and the police department's perpetuation of that bias.” “There were not three people checking out of Airbnb, there were four. The fourth person was a white woman. A Rialto Police Department officer is clearly heard on video saying that the caller identified 'three suspicious black people stealing stuff.' Apparently, the neighbor did not find the same actions of the fourth person - a white woman - 'suspicious'," the statement added. In a statement to the media, Prendergast was reported as saying: “The whole experience was surreal. Cop cars rushing in and surrounding our vehicle, closing in on us with their hands on their holsters and ordering us to put our hands up. I'm a filmmaker, and I had seen this movie too many times in America. I watched the ending of Michael Brown. He put his hands up and they fired. I kept my hands down. As a Rastafari woman, no matter what they did to my flesh, I ensured my spirit and dignity would survive.” She added: “I chose not to put my hands up, and I lived. This was wrong, and I knew I had the right to be right. When I told my grandma what happened and she watched the video, she had tears in her eyes, and she said: 'Make sure you tell them you are doing this for grandma, too'.”

McLeod Takes Gold At Diamond League Reigning Jamaican Olympic champion, Omar McLeod, barely held off Spain's Orlando Ortega to win the men's 110 meters hurdles on a rain-drenched night at the Shanghai Diamond League in China Saturday. Running out of lane five, McLeod led from the start and cleared the final hurdle still in front; but was forced into a leaning finish in order to prevent Ortega from sprinting through in lane eight to take the win. The result was a world-leading 13.16 seconds while Ortega was timed at 13.17 seconds, with Russian Sergey Shubenkov finishing third in 13.27. “I was kind of overcome with emotions because I've been through a lot this season,” said McLeod, who missed last month's Commonwealth Games in Australia through injury. “I was hurt a month ago. I still was feeling some slight pain, but I was like, 'I'm here. “My leg is a little bit sore but my body's in shock because it's just fatigue and I haven't been able to do a 110 workout in like a month. It's just a lot of emotions.” Meanwhile, Commonwealth Games champion and fellow Jamaican, Ronald Levy, trailed in fourth in 13.33 while fellow countryman Hansle Parchment, who took silver in Gold Coast, Australia, was fifth in 13.48.
Bahamian Gardiner And MillerUbio Also Winners Bahamian Steven Gardiner won the 400-m men event in a record time of 43.99 seconds run, pushing Botswana's Isaac Makwala, 44.23 into second place. Bahamian Shaunae Miller-Ubio was also a winner, winning the 200m women event in a meet record and PB time of 22.06 sec. Netherland's Dafne Schippers was second in 22.24, while Jamaica's Shericka Jackson was third in 22.36 seconds.
Other Jamaican Placements At the same event, Jamaican and Commonwealth champion Janieve Russell continued her excellent start to the season, placing second in 400m hurdles with her best-ever time of 53.78. She was nipped at the finishing line by American Olympic Champion Dalilah Muhammad who had a time of 53.77. Jamaica's Leah Nugent finished sixth in 56.54. Jamaican athletes also placed in other events. These included Commonwealth shot-putt champion Danniel Thomas-Dodd's with a throw of 18.70m, who placed second in the event behind China's Gong Lijiao, 19.99m and Shanieka Ricketts, 14.55m, and Kimberly Williams, 14.35m, who were second and third in the triple jump, behind Colombian Caterine Ibarguen, who leaped 14.80m for the win.
Tappa Gets 4-Year Contract To Coach Reggae Boyz Theodore 'Tappa' Whitmore has finally been provided with what can be called a “solid” contract with the Jamaica Football Federation, (JFF). Whitmore has been contracted to serve as the head coach of Jamaica's national senior football team. President of the JFF, Michael Ricketts, confirmed that Whitmore was provided with and signed a four-year contract to run from June 1, 2018 to December 31, 2022, on Monday. “I would like to express my delight on behalf of the JFF that we have finally signed an agreement. We now have a contractual document with coach Whitmore,” said Ricketts. Whitmore, who stepped down as head coach after being unhappy with the initial offers from the federation, withdrew his resignation in April after the intervention of Sports Minister Olivia Grange. While not disclosing the financial components of the contract, Ricketts said both parties are satisfied with the terms and conditions. He also said Ricketts requested that the JFF not discuss the financial terms of his contract publicly and, accordingly, the JFF was adhering to that request.
With the contract controversy over, and a new contract signed, Whitmore says he is focusing on preparing Jamaica's national football squad, the Reggae Boyz, for the inaugural CONCACAF Nations League in September.
