Florida Judge extends voting registration to October 18 Cnweeklynews.com Early Wednesday, Florida Judge Mark Walker of the US District Court overruled the decision of Florida Governor Rick Scott and Florida Secretary of State Ken Detzner, ruling to extend voter registration in the state to Tuesday, October, 18. The original voter registration deadline was October 11, but arising from the impact on the state from the passage of Hurricane Matthew, Florida Democrats and the Hillary Clinton campaign called on Scott to extend the deadline, but the governor refused. Last Sunday, Florida Democrats and the League of Women Voters of Florida (LWVF) filed a complaint against Scott and Detzner for refusing to extend voter registration in the aftermath of the hurricane. On Monday, the US District continues on B4 – Deadline extended

Caribbean-American company receives $1.25 million funding from US Government Dr. Garth A. Rose M. Gill and Associates, one of the longest serving Caribbean-American companies in South Florida has successfully secured a $1.25 million award from the US government. The US Department of Commerce has awarded the company, formed in 1990 by Jamaican-American Marie Gill, to operate a new Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA) Global Business Center in Florida. In meeting one of the core objectives of M. Gill and Associates, to develop local small businesses to be viable and qualify for public funding and minority contracts, Gill formerly operated the MBDA Business Center in Miami from 2002 to March this year. However according to Gill in an interview with National Weekly, through “a major operational” problem her company was unable to meet the deadline for securing funding for that entity. However, she applied for funding to open and operate the new MBDA center, competing with four other local companies. Formal announcement of the award will be made by Joan Hill, the US Department Chief of the Office of Business Development on Friday at the MED Week Conference in Miami. Hill

said M. Gill & Associates received the award because it was “the most experienced bidder with a track record of capability and accomplishment, …. that will provide services to grow minority firms, domestically as well as help to aggressively increase their global competitiveness.” Gill said, the focus of the new center will be to assist small multi-cultural businesses that are linked overseas to develop their exporting capabilities and benefit from the “vast export market.” “That is why the new center is named the Global Business Center. There is a vast opportunity for small or minority businesses continues on B4 – Gill and Asociates

Hundreds of millennials attend Clinton rally On Tuesday, from as early as 10:00 a.m. hundreds of South Florida residents under age-35 gathered at the West Kendall campus of MiamiDade College to hear democratic candidate Hillary Clinton speak at a campaign rally. Denise Rodman, MDC staff member, said before Clinton and Al Gore, former US VicePresident during her husband Bill Clinton's administration, arrived, the auditorium was packed to capacity, with the majority of the audience comprised of “enthusiastic millennials.” She also said outside the auditorium there were hundreds of millennials and other Clinton supporters who although unable to get in remained until the rally ended listening and watching the proceedings from outdoor speakers and video-screens.

Clinton campaign staffer, Milly Gooden, said the campaign was encouraged by the turnout of young supporters, as there was concern millennials were not enthused about Clinton's candidacy. “To say the campaign is encouraged is an understatement,” she said. Both Clinton and Gore, who lost his presidential bid to George W. Bush in the 2000 presidential elections, used the rally to focus on the dangers of climate change. Gore has spent the years since 2000 focusing on educating Americans and the international community on the dangers of global warming resulting from climate change. In reference to Hurricane Matthew, a dangerous category 5 storm that passed through the Caribbean devastating regions of Haiti, and moving up the east coast of Florida destroying lives and property, Gore attributed the storm's strength to global warming. “For Matthew to grow from a tropical storm to a category 5 hurricane within 36 hours

was extremely unusual.” He explained the waters around Florida and in the Gulf of Mexico is unusually warm which facilitates the growth of storms. Gore also indicated since Hurricane Andrew impacted South Florida in 1992 the seas on the Florida coast has risen by three inches. In recent years during periods of high tide, property along the of South Florida's coast have experienced flooding from the surrounding ocean. Clinton cautioned that the issue of climate change is an extremely important one for the US to focus on, especially for Florida residents. “However, my opponent does not believe in climate change. We cannot risk putting a man who denies climate change is a serious issue in the White House,” she told the enthusiastic audience. Gore also drew on his close loss to Bush in 200o to encourage voters to vote in the general elections. In the 2000 elections Gore lost Florida

to Bush by just 537 votes, after a controversial and lengthy recount of votes. “Your vote, really, really, really counts. You can consider me Exhibit A for this fact.” He said he doesn't want Clinton to suffer the same experience and years from now when she returns t0 Florida people say, “You almost won, but…”. He said it's therefore important for her to win convincingly to remove any doubt. Both Gore and Clinton reminded those who were not registered to vote to take advantage of the extension of Florida's voter's registration deadline. The original registration deadline was Tuesday, October 11, but on Monday a Florida court extended it to October 12, responding to a lawsuit filed by Florida Democrats seeking an extension because of Hurricane Matthew. On Wednesday the court further ruled in favor of the Democrats, extending registration to October 18.

US halts deportation of Haitians due to Matthew aftermath Prior to the devastation Hurricane Matthew wreaked on Haiti leaving hundreds dead, widespread destruction to homes, agricultural lands and other property, Haitian and other officials in South Florida and across the US vehemently opposed a recent decision by the Obama administration. The decision announced last month by the US Department of Homeland Security was to recommence widespread deportation of undocumented Haitian immigrants. However, on Tuesday, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson announced a hold on the deportation policy, but nonetheless indicated the government intends to

resume the policy in the future. The hurricane has actually made travelling to Haiti a challenge as airlines have suspended a

number flights to the country. In making his announcement, referring to the devastation from the hurricane, Johnson said, “We will have to deal with that situation, address it, and be sympathetic to the plight of the people of Haiti as a result of the hurricane. After that situation has been addressed, we intend to resume the policy change that I brought about several weeks ago." The administration decided to resume deportations of undocumented Haitians after suspending the policy on humanitarian grounds in the aftermath of the 2010 earthquake in Haiti. Although there were some deportations, they mostly involved individuals who committed criminal acts. However, on announcing the

recommencing of the policy on September 21, Johnson said it was the US's assessment that conditions in Haiti had sufficiently improved to warrant renewing the deportation policy including those who abided by US laws. Since September 21, undocumented Haitians mostly those attempting to or having crossed the US border in California have been detained, in preparation to be deported. Following the announcement to recommence deportation, several South Florida officials including North Miami Mayor Dr. Smith Joseph and Congresswoman Frederica Wilson initiated resolutions asking President Obama to reconsider the deportations. continues on A4 – Deportation

Gov’t says nation to benet from new oil and gas sector The Guyana government says it has been assured the country will benefit economically from its newly discovered oil and gas sector despite current market trends of low prices for the commodities. In a statement, the Ministry of Natural Resources said it has taken note of the perspectives and opinions expressed by members of the public on how the country should be preparing for the oil and gas sector. It said while it welcomes healthy discourse and remains committed to continuing these conversations in an inclusive and consultative manner,” however, we also recognize that there is need for accurate information and wish to take this opportunity to provide such and also remind the public of the progress being made by the Ministry in preparing the nation for oil production”.

In July, the US-based Exxon Mobil Corporation said it made a significant discovery of oil in a second well, located offshore Guyana. According to Exxon, that drilling results from the Liza-2 well, the second exploration well in the Stabroek block confirm a world-class discovery with a recoverable resource of between US$800 million and 1.4 billion oilequivalent barrels. The government said that international financial experts have assured that despite current market trends, Guyana will benefit when production commences, provided that the operations of the well perform as projected.

Last week, over 50 Democratic and Republican House lawmakers from 20 states, the District of Columbia and the Virgin Islands joined Congresswoman Wilson in sending a letter to President Obama urging his administration's reconsideration. The Congressional representatives argued it would be inhumane to deport Haitians who were not guilty of crimes. They said it would be inhumane since Haiti continues to struggle to recover from the earthquake, and now there is the impact from Hurricane Matthew. Even before the full impact of Hurricane Matthew on Haiti was known, Congresswoman Wilson cited that the task of recovery from the 2010 disaster would be compounded by the hurricane which caused the postponement of presidential and legislative elections scheduled for October 9. Wilson said, “The task of recovery in Haiti has been made even more difficult by Hurricane Matthew. These deportations would send thousands of lawabiding Haitians who have been able to rebuild their lives here in America to a dismal fate. Most would be returning to nothing: no homes, no jobs, no futures.”

Talk UP Do you think that Donald Trump's statements should disqualify him to be President?

Vanessa: Plantation, FL – I do think that Donald Trump should be disqualified based on some of the statements that he has made. He's just incompetent; he's unprofessional, he's rude, he's biased, he's just all-over not a good fit. He cannot respond well to the public and he will pretty much get a lot of people, a lot of nations - a lot of countries in a lot of situations based on some of the comments that he made. He will get them in a state of emergency, is how I see it.

Kenneth: Miramar, FL – Absolutely. For him to degrade women like that is just a plain out negative, in my opinion. I mean you shouldn't degrade women, and basically – who would vote for a person like that?

Phil: Coral Springs, FL – I wouldn't say it should disqualify him, but, the question is, does it show him to be Presidential – that's the issue I have. If he has those thoughts, and thoughts tells you who a person really is, so that's who he is. Is he the right pick? No. I just have an issue with that. Why? Because I got kids – I got daughters, I got wife, I got girl friends, I mean – Naw. I've got a problem with that. I think that we've passed that era, we're better than this. We've come a long way and at this stage, it feels like instead of us moving forward, we seem to be going backwards. So, yeah, I've got a problem with it, to be honest with you.

Horace: Plantation, FL – Of course that should disqualify him, because him talk a lot of trash, you know. He's not fit fi a President. He's all in it for himself. Him not goin' fool me, that's all.

Ralph: Sunrise, FL – That just shows the consistency about his temperament, what he's really about, and I don't think that he's fit to be President.

Joseph: Sunrise, FL – No, no, no, no. He no (have) qualification for the President because he talking bad about the lady – No man supposed to talk bad about the lady. It's not good, it's not right. For me, Donald Trump is supposed to step down because he not qualified because he talking too bad about the black people, about the lady. That is not qualified for the President of America.

Oral: Sunrise, FL – I definitely think Donald Trump should be disqualified for that comment he made, because I don't think that any President in the past actually made a comment like that and actually served. So I think a President should set an example for the community and there is no way… that comment alone will tell that he don't have the character to be President of the United States.

Beziah: Pembroke Pines, FL – I think definitely his comments should disqualify him. He's said a lot of outrageous things, not only is he a flip-flopper just on the political front, but he also says a lot of things that I would feel are degrading to women and people of color. He's a joke! To me, quite frank, I initially thought it was a joke and it's very disappointing that it's not and that he's an actual contender. He's more than unqualified, I'm just so appalled that he's actually a front runner. It really baffles me. I wouldn't trust him with our nuclear bombs, I wouldn't trust him with my own checking account let alone being at the seat of the highest position in our country.

Ishmael: Sunrise, FL – Too pushy, too much of everything with what he can do and stuff. He rubs people the wrong way most of the time. Hillary's part of the same government that we have and haven't gotten anything much out of it and it's just the same program over and over again, so, don't know about both of them. Somebody else has to bring something better.

Time is right for America’s rst woman president The revelation of a 1995 video depicting Republican candidate Donald Trump disparaging women with degrading sexist remarks, and the resulting controversy may have bolstered the case for America to elect its first female president. The video is indicative of the disrespectful chauvinistic manner which some men regard women. Some continue to see women primarily as sexual targets to be pounced on and groped in the most intimate way without their consent. It is not far fetch to believe one of the reasons Hillary Clinton is struggling to find traction with some groups of men, especially white working-class male voters is her gender. There are men who are fiercely opposed to women governing them, period. Even on a domestic level there are men who are opposed to women being the head of their households or making any major decision, except perhaps what to cook, in the home. In a recent post on a website opposed to Clinton's candidacy, a man claiming to be a Christian conservative wrote, “It's ungodly for a woman to rule the country. The Bible says, 'women must submit themselves to men'.” The actual Biblical quote is “Women submit thyself to your husbands,” but this man, like others, interprets it to mean women must be always submissive to men. For too long have American women been regarded and treated as the submissive and inferior gender. Despite the stringent efforts of women for the right to vote from around 1840, it wasn't until 1920 that women were officially given that right. Even then, it took a long time for women to be accepted as political leaders in state and federal governments. When Geraldine Ferraro was selected in 1984 by Democratic candidate Walter Mondale as his vice-presidential running-mate, it was a sort of revolution, being the first time a woman was selected on the presidential ticket of a major political party. However, since then women have been

gaining in national politics. When Congress convened in 2013 there was a record of 98 women members; 20 of 100 senators, and 78 of 435 House representatives. Though regarded as a record, this is still a relatively small number of women, surely not an adequate representation of the 126 million women included in the US 2013 Demographics. Of the 50 US states, 23, including Florida, have never had a female governor. Currently, there are only six incumbent women governors. It's argued there's nothing stopping women from seeking political office in American cities, counties, and states. But, historically, with women finding it harder to succeed in these elections, several are reluctant to seek office. This situation is unfortunate because there're several issues peculiar to women, which are not being dealt with effectively by the usual male dominated legislatures. And now that issues like equal pay for women; paid maternity leave; equal workplace opportunities; health insurance for healthcare peculiar to women; abortion rights; birth control; domestic violence, and, unfortunately, the persistent problem of sexual harassment the time might just be right for a woman to lead. On Tuesday, in the aftermath of the infamous Trump video a website asked women to tweet if they have ever experienced sexual harassment. According to reports, 20 million responded to having some type of sexual harassment from a male figure. As a woman said recently referring to the possibility of Clinton being elected America's first female president, “Not because women have the right to vote are the issues that perplex us being addressed. The very fact that Hillary is facing such harsh opposition to her election is symbolic of the uphill task women face in America.” Polls are suggesting women are pinning their hopes on Clinton being elected; trusting she'll serve effectively to dispel misnomers of women being inferior and not capable of running the free world. Manifestation of this hope is recent polls that offer her the support of over 60 percent of women. This support has increased since the release of the Trump video.

There's absolutely no reason America can't be led by a woman. Other male leadership dominated nations, including Britain, Germany, Pakistan and India were and in the case of Germany, continue to be successfully led by women. Why can't America have capable leadership with a woman as president? America is still on the path for change. Change began with the first African-American president. It might just be time for the nation to be led by its first female president.

Several institutions come to Haiti’s aid Several international financial institutions and agencies have once again come to Haiti's aid, as the country suffered yet another devastating, natural disaster blow. The World Bank, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the United Nations, among others, have offered support for Haiti in the wake of the passage of Hurricane Matthew earlier this week that killed more than 800 people. The death toll could rise even higher as search and rescue teams reach areas that were once inaccessible. “Our thoughts are with the people of Haiti, many of whom are still recovering from the earthquake of 2010,” said World Bank Group President Jim Yong Kim on Friday during the IMF/World Bank annual meetings. “We've reached out to the government and

offered immediate support to respond to the disaster. Our staff on the ground are already working with the ministry of public works to begin restoring access to the hardest hit areas

in the south of the country, including a key bridge that was washed away. Kim said, while it is still too early to know the full impact of the storm, as some of the

Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke calls on Obama to expedite Haiti aid Caribbean American Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke has called on the Obama administration to expedite aid to Haiti in the wake of the destruction caused by passage of Hurricane Matthew. “People of good faith from around the world have been horrified by the images of Haitian families wading through the flood waters in search of safe shelter,” said Clarke, the daughter of Jamaican immigrants, who represents the 9th Congressional District in Brooklyn, New York, on Saturday. “With members of my staff and my colleagues in government at the federal, state,

and local levels, we will continue to work with the Haitian Diaspora to aid in coordinating an effective disaster relief and recovery response and continue to raise our voices to the Obama Administration, the Department of State, and the Department of Homeland Security to demand expedited action and support for the recovery efforts currently underway,” she added. “I will also continue to monitor the situation and insist on accountability,” she continued. Resources are an important start, but only a start. To complete the process of recovery, we must connect those resources to the families in need, as quickly as possible. With the threat of cholera and other threats to the public health, we cannot afford any delay.” As members of the Caribbean-American community in the United States, Clarke noted that “we have always joined in solidarity in moments of crisis.

The Caribbean Catastrophe Risk Insurance Facility, developed with assistance of the World Bank, also announced that it was ready to pay Haiti over US$20 million in the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew. Globally, the World Bank said Haiti ranks as the third country most affected by climate events, according to the 2016 German watch, Global Climate Index.

Dancehall producer Lloyd Campbell dies in Florida Veteran Jamaican music producer Lloyd Campbell, 68, died recently following a decade-long bout with cancer. Campbell, who was a resident of South Florida, died at a South Florida hospital. Campbell's daughter Michelle said her father took a worse turn the last two weeks, and although he fought the disease all these years, he eventually succumbed to it. Campbell who was originally born in Kingston, Jamaica was involved in the record production business since the 1960's, returning to Jamaica in the 1970's from residing in England. He was producing hits for artists like The Itals and Joy White on the Joe Frazier and Spiderman labels. Some of the more memorable hits he produced were dancehall gems like 'Over Me” by Yellowman and “Tribal War” by Lone Ranger.

He also produced many hits for Jamaican and South Floridian music legend Freddie McGregor. These hits included “Uncle Sam,” and “What You Gonna Do”. One of three cuts produced by Campbell on McGregor's recent album, “True To My Roots” is another well-known reggae hit. In a tribute to Campbell, McGregor referred to him as a “true

producer.” Although he was ailing, Campbell was involved in the production of a new album, “I Am, I Said” for Mikey Spice, another popular Jamaican singer. While residing in South Florida, he produced hits for several local artists including: Kashief Lindo, Glen Washington, Fiona, Maxi Priest, and Roger Robin. An indication of the influence that Campbell had on Jamaican music and musicians is an overview of his productions and artists including Reggae Chart topping hits like: “Jah Glory”, and “Kindness for Weakness” by Glen Washington; “Back in The Days”, Marcia Griffith; “My Girl Dis”, Maxi Priest and Ritchie Stephens; and George Nooks “Much Love.” Campbell is survived by four children and seven grandchildren.

Breast Cancer Symptoms and Diagnosis Cathy Cassata, Medically Reviewed by Sanjai Sinha, MD

A new lump or mass is the most common sign of breast cancer. Since mammograms for screening have become more common, the number of breast cancer cases discovered before symptoms occur has increased. However, in some instances, the cancer can be missed on a mamogram, either due to error to the fact that about 15 percent of breast cancers aren’t visible on a mammogram.

Symptoms Though most cases of breast cancer have no symptoms until they're discovered on a mammogram, the most common symptom of breast cancer is a new lump or mass. Masses that are more likely to be cancerous are painless, hard, and immobile with irregular edges. However, some breast cancers can be tender, soft, or rounded and even painful. While the following signs and symptoms can be caused by conditions other than breast cancer, you should contact your doctor if you experience any of them: Ÿ Changes in the size or shape of the breast Ÿ A lump or thickening in or near the breast, or in the underarm area Ÿ Swelling of all or part of a breast (even if no lump is felt) Ÿ Skin irritation on or around the breast Ÿ Puckering in the skin of the breast, or dimpling that looks like the skin of an orange Ÿ Breast or nipple pain Ÿ Nipple that is turning inward Ÿ Redness, scaliness, or thickening of the nipple, areola (dark area of skin around the nipple), or breast skin Ÿ Nipple discharge that is not milk Some breast cancers spread to lymph nodes under the arm or around the collarbone and cause a lump or swelling in those areas before a tumor in the breast tissue is large enough to be felt. If you experience swollen lymph nodes, call your doctor right away.

Diagnosing Breast Cancer Your doctor may use the following tests and procedures to diagnose breast cancer: Breast exam: To check for any lumps or abnormalities, your doctor will palpate (feel) both of your breasts and lymph nodes in the armpit. Mammogram: A screening mammogram takes an X-ray of your breast to look for any abnormalities or changes in your breasts. If anything looks suspicious, your doctor may recommend a diagnostic mammogram to take a closer look at the abnormality. Ultrasound: In an ultrasound, sound waves produce images of structures deep within the body. A breast ultrasound may help distinguish between a solid mass and a fluid-filled cyst. Biopsy: In a biopsy, a tissue sample is taken from your breast and sent to a lab for analysis. The lab will determine the type of cells involved in the breast cancer, the aggressiveness of the cancer, and whether the cancer cells have receptors that may influence your treatment options. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI): An MRI uses a magnet and radio waves to create pictures of the interior of your breast. Your doctor may request other tests or procedures if needed.

Stages of Breast Cancer Once you receive a diagnosis of breast cancer, your doctor will perform tests to determine the stage of your cancer. Knowing the stage of your cancer is an important step in deciding how to treat it. Your doctor may use the following tests and procedures to determine the stage of your breast cancer. Stage 0: The cancer is noninvasive or contained within the milk ducts, lobules, or nipple. Stage I: The cancer has formed a tumor two centimeters or smaller in size and has not spread outside the breast, except there may be small clusters of cancer cells in the lymph nodes. Stage II: The cancer is growing but is still only in the breast or has spread to lymph nodes near the tumor, but not beyond. Stage III: The cancer has spread beyond the tumor into lymph nodes and muscles. However, the cancer has not yet reached other organs. Stage IV: Also called metastatic breast cancer, cancer in this stage has spread to other parts of the body, including the bones, lungs, liver, or brain.

Go beyond pink during breast cancer awareness month This October, there will be lots of pink ribbons, shirts, and pins all across the United States supporting early breast cancer survivors. But, it is also important to acknowledge the approximately 151,000 U.S. women currently living with metastatic breast cancer (MBC), the most advanced stage of the disease. These women can have a very different experience than those diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer, as this diagnosis often raises more questions than answers, due to the lack of MBCspecific information available. Seven months ago, Pam Pingeton began her MBC journey. "I was in utter shock," she recalls after receiving the news that her breast cancer had metastasized, or spread, to other areas of the body five years after her diagnosis of early-stage breast cancer. "I was in the best shape of my life and felt on top of the world, so I was floored." Following her diagnosis, Pingeton sought to learn as much as she could about the disease. "I didn't know what metastatic breast cancer meant. I had to educate myself," Pingeton says. "I learned as much as I could by researching different websites, but found that much of the information focused on early breast cancer and didn't apply to me." To help educate women living with MBC, in October 2015, AstraZeneca launched the Beyond Pink: Sharing Our Metastatic Breast Cancer Story educational campaign. Beyond Pink was created specifically for MBC patients and their loved ones to provide tools and information for their unique journey. This year, the Beyond Pink campaign is extending its reach by bringing experience centers to cities across the U.S. to help inform the general public about MBC and

empower patients to drive their own journey through educational videos and photo-sharing opportunities. "This campaign is critical in order to educate the public. Before reading the educational materials I didn't fully understand MBC, nor did I know that approximately 30 percent of women with early breast cancer will eventually have their breast cancer return as metastatic disease at some point in their lives," Pingeton says. Pingeton's best piece of advice for those living with MBC is, "Live for the moment and don't worry about the what-ifs. Live as normally as possible. Face the challenges/obstacles as they come but don't obsess about what might happen." To further help create awareness of MBC, find strength and solidarity in these experiences, and show support for this specific community, Pingeton is encouraging the MBC community to share their stories and photos to inspire others, using #MBCStrength on Twitter and Facebook, for a chance to be featured in the campaign. This October, remember, those living with MBC face different challenges than those with early stage breast cancer. To learn more about MBC and how to go Beyond Pink, visit www.LifeBeyondPink.com.

The advantages of ling

BANKRUPTCY

In addition to providing individuals with financial freedom, and the opportunity to begin their financial lives again with a clean slate, Chapter 7 bankruptcy can also put families back on the path to building a solid financial future. Finances that were once gobbled up by credit cards and other consumer debts can be used to pay household and living expenses without stress and as circumstances improve, money can be set aside as saving for educational expenses, emergencies, retirement and other necessities of life. Chapter 7 bankruptcy has many advantages, but there are also many commonly held misconceptions as well. The most common mistaken belief is that it is impossible to get credit or buy a car or house for 7-10 years after filing for bankruptcy. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Normal credit can be easily reestablished within several years, including automobile and home mortgage loans, since a person is virtually debt free. Once the bankruptcy process is complete, many consumers find that credit scores have improved, since late payments, write-office

and delinquencies on the credit report have all been discharged through the bankruptcy. Bad credit stays on an individual's credit report for 7 years, and a bankruptcy for 10. The truth is that for those who qualify, bankruptcy may eliminate credit card, medical and other consumer debts and judgments, stop pending and threatened lawsuits, foreclosures, garnishments and harassing telephone calls and letters from debt collectors and provide a fresh financial start! Factors in qualifying for Chapter 7 bankruptcy include level of income and amount of assets. Qualifying homes, retirement accounts and other important exemptions are generally not counted towards assets in Florida, allowing many consumers to keep what they own and complete the entire bankruptcy process in as little as 90 days. So when financial problems seem overwhelming, the good news is that the first step to solving debt problems may be the easiest one – find out what your options are and take control of your future.

Legal implications regarding sharing children between estranged parents Attorney Yanique Otto

For families facing struggles with the overwhelming burden of debt, caught in an exhausting cycle of juggling bills, debts & mortgage payments, the financial pressures can be devastating. And to make matters worse, many older Floridians, ages 55+ who have worked hard all their lives, lose their job, only to discover that their age makes it difficult or impossible to find a new one. But just when all hope seems lost bankruptcy may offer a very positive solution. Attorney Caroly Pedersen, Esq.

B3

Scenario: You have a court order governing timesharing of your children between you and the other parent of your child/children. You've recently gotten a better job offer in another city, and you want to move away and you want to take the kids with you.

Here's what you need to know:

There are four types of bankruptcy cases provided under the law: Chapter 7 is known as “straight” bankruptcy or “liquidation.” It requires a debtor to give up property which exceeds certain limits called “exemptions”, so the property can be sold to pay creditors. Chapter 11 known as “reorganization”, is used by businesses and a few individual debtors whose debts are very large. Chapter 12 is reserved for family farmers. Chapter 13 is called “debt adjustment.” It requires a debtor to file a plan to pay debts (or parts of debts) from current income.

The Florida Relocation Statute is the Florida law which provides guidance to parents regarding the removal of children when they do not have a court order or judgment clearly addressing the relocation of a minor child. This same statute provides serious sanctions to parents who already are under a Court's order or judgment, establishing a time-sharing plan, parental plan, or custody – but the parent relocates the minor child without first following certain legal steps or requirements. Parents in this situation are not confined to the house that they live in. They are free to move to another home if they so desire, but there are guidelines. Whenever a parent wants to move away with his children, who are subject to a parenting plan, and the move will be more than 50 miles away from the originally designated primary physical residential home, that parent must either get the consent of the other parent, or approval from the court, by filing what is known as a Petition for Relocation. In the aforementioned scenario, the parent who got this attractive job offer and wishes to move more than 50 miles away, needs to consult with the other parent and get their permission in writing and signed, or that parent will need to file a Petition for Relocation with the court, and convince the judge that the move is in the best interest of the child.

Deadline extended Court in Florida court approved a one-day extension of voter registration, but the Democrats proceeded with their lawsuit, and a hearing was scheduled for 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday. The lawsuit argued the National Voter Registration Act (NVRA) provides that the registration cutoff may be no more than 30 days before an election. The complaint requested the deadline be extended to account for the lost days and weekend of voter registration resulting from the hurricane, up to and including October 18. In the complaint, Pamela Goodman, president of the League of Women Voters stated, "Decades of experience tell us that the

days leading up to the deadline - including the weekend - are the most crucial part of the registration calendar, and we have lost precious time. Extending the voter registration deadline to make up for the days lost to Hurricane Matthew is the only way to give every Floridian who lives in the path of the hurricane an equal chance to participate in this year's elections." The extension is regarded as a victory for Florida Democrats who have been seeing great response in their drive to register new voters in time for the November 8 general elections. A heavy turnout of Florida Democrats would significantly help Hillary Clinton win the state, especially in South Florida where registered Democrats overwhelmingly out-register Republicans by over 650,000.

The administration of the City of Lauderdale Lakes continue to be beset by problems. Following the sudden resignation of city manager Kevin Baker two weeks ago after serving for only a few months, there are questions pertaining to the city's finance director Susan Gooding-Luburd who like Baker, formerly worked in the embattled Opa-locka administration. Gooding-Luburd also assumed duties at Lauderdale lakes at around the same time as Baker. Recently, allegations have surfaced that Gooding-Luburd had used over $1 million held by the City of Opa-locka in respect of water-bill deposits made by residents to balance that city's budget in 2014 violation of that city's rules. While attempts by National Weekly to reach either Gooding-Luburd or Acting City Manager Phil Alleyne for comments on the allegations were unsuccessful, residents who have learned of the allegations are very upset. “Something is very wrong in the management of Lauderdale Lakes,” said city resident Caleb Johnson. “The problems being experienced now comes from some members of the city commission's rush to fire the very former capable city manager Jonathan Allen, and rush even harder to hire the city manager who just left, and the new finance director without properly vetting these people.”

Defibrillators now accessible to schools in Jamaica

After the sudden death of St. George's College soccer captain Dominic James last month, Team Jamaica Bickle is donating 15 Automated External Defibrillators (AEDS) to schools across the island. An AED is a portable electronic device that automatically diagnoses the life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias of ventricular fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia in a patient, and is able to treat them through defibrillation. The application of electrical therapy stops the arrhythmia, allowing the heart to reestablish an effective rhythm. The official presentation and training will take place on this Friday, October 14, at JAMPRO in Kingston. The organization has also partnered with the Jamaica Association of Emergency Medical Technicians (JAMEMTS), based at the University of the West Indies, to provide on-going training and support to the recipient schools. “We were in the process of sourcing defibrillators to present at a later date but in light of the recent tragedy we've decided to accelerate the hand-over to these schools,” said Irwine Clare, CEO and founder of the organization.
