After November 8, the next mayor of the City of Lauderdale Lakes will be a woman. Both former Florida House Representative Hazelle Rogers and incumbent City Commissioner Dr. Edwina Coleman are in the run for the seat vacated by Barrington Russell. Should Caribbean-American and Florida Representative Hazelle Rogers, be elected mayor, she would have come full circle in her political career. She was originally elected as a Lauderdale Lakes Commissioner in 1996, and served the city for 12 years before she was elected to the Florida House in 2008. Rogers is competing with Dr. Coleman, an African American, to succeed Mayor Barrington Russell who ironically was elected in August to succeed Rogers as Florida House Representative from Broward County District 5. Rogers said she decided to campaign for mayor several months ago, saying she “decided to run for mayor because it's my firm opinion that it's time for progressive and experienced leadership of the city. Clinton leads Trump in Florida in polls For most U.S. presidential elections, Florida is traditionally designated a “toss-up” state, meaning it could either fall in the Democratic or Republican column on Election Day. This year is no different as reflected in various polls. One month ago, Democrat Hillary Clinton led her Republican rival by 6 percentage points, then on the eve of the September 26 presidential debate, the polls had the candidates locked in a dead heat. A new post-debate poll released by Quinnipac University on Monday tossed the lead back to Clinton with 46 percentage points to Donald Trump's 41, and 7 percent to Libertarian Party candidate Gary Johnson. When Johnson was removed from the polling, Clinton lead Trump 49 to 44 percent. While several polls, including internal polls conducted by Clinton's campaign in Florida show
her leading by an average of 30 points among Blacks, including Caribbean-American, and Hispanic voters, and 12 percent among women, she still has ground to cover with independent and voters under age-35. However, according to the Clinton campaign pollster, Wray Allister, internal polls conducted since the presidential debate saw an 11 percent increase among independent voters and an 8point increase among youth voters for Clinton. “A month ago we were concerned with the high percentage of undecided independent and youth voters, but gradually our polls are showing more support for Hillary among these two groups. It's evident the presidential debates will serve as powerful deciding factors among independent and undecided voters. Our Florida poll had her winning the first debate 61- 27 percent, much like national polls.” The Quinnipac poll among
Lauderdale Lakes mayor have served the city previously for 12 years and have lived there for 34. I am quite knowledgeable of the needs of the city and its residents and I want to ensure that Lauderdale Lakes prospers long into the future.” She said she's cognizant, that in order to move the city forward it will take a team – mayor, commissioners, city management and staff, business leaders and residents – to do so. She predicts the next mayor will make decisions affecting public safety, property values, and the daily quality of life of residents. “The next mayor will likely make decisions involving
Florida likely voters had Clinton winning that debate 56 to 21 percent Allister said while various state and national polls are important to determine national trends, internal party polls are critical in determining the more vulnerable areas in respective regions and precincts where the party needs to get out the vote during the elections. The Sunshine State is important to both campaigns. Trump frequently appears in the state. Clinton visited Fort Pierce and Coral Springs on Friday and her campaign has blanketed the state with prominent surrogates who command extensive news media coverage as well as celebrity and political surrogates designed to court specific demographic groups, such as black voters or gay voters. Last Weekend Hillary Clinton addressed rallies in Fort Pierce and Coral Springs. On
Monday Vice President Joe Biden addressed another group in Orlando. President Obama was scheduled to address a rally at the Florida Memorial College in Miami Gardens on Wednesday, but it was postponed as Hurricane Matthew tracks towards Florida. In the 2008 and 2012 presidential elections, Obama won Florida doing exceptionally well with black, Hispanic, women and youth voters. His schedule to address the Florida Memorial rally was geared specifically to target youth voters, according to the Clinton campaign. In the meantime, Clinton's campaign continues to advertise heavily in Florida, especially in the Democratic leaning South and Central Florida areas, and is proactively planning its get-out-the vote strategy, from October 24 when early voting commences through till Election Day on November 8.
who will ultimately decide.” Rogers' opponent, Dr. Coleman, was first elected to the city commission in 2008, the year Rogers left for Tallahassee. She served as the first female vice-mayor of the city in 2009 and 2011 and was re-elected unopposed as commissioner in 2012 for a second four-year term. Her experience also includes 38 years of dedicated service to the Broward County School System, with 20 of those years at Boyd Anderson High School. Also a long term resident of Lauderdale Lakes, Dr. Coleman says she's running for mayor because “I love my city and
believe I have made a measurable difference during my tenure as city commissioner.” She says she wants to “continue working very hard for the entire city to make it a world class city that sponsors programs that facilitate a higher quality of life for all its residents.” The next city mayor will have more authority than her predecessor. Unlike the outgoing mayor, the incoming mayor will have a vote and an integral part in the decision-making process; the city charter was changed in 2012, reducing the next commission from 7 to 5 members and giving the mayor a vote.

I am fully prepared for the task ahead having represented Lauderdale Lakes as a commissioner and a Florida House Representative. I have the knowledge of critical city, county and state issues and the personality to effectively communicate the collective vision for the city.” Rogers says despite her collective experience she isn't taking her potential election for granted. “I have strong competition, and it's the voters

Caribbean Public Health Agency dismisses alleged Zika cover-up
Five Bahamians fear for safety because of political advocacy
everyone who has been infected, adding these figures are what is described as the “tip of the iceberg.” Regarding the Zika outbreak, CARPHA said the reported cases are persons who have been infected with Zika and then sought medical attention. CARPHA states that the Iceberg Phenomenon states that only a small percentage of all infected persons end up being laboratory confirmed positive cases.
The government of The Bahamas says it intends to respond fully to a claim by five nationals that their lives are in danger because of their political advocacy and that some of them have had to flee the country. Foreign Minister Fred Mitchell said the Perry Christie government is preparing its response to the petition that has been filed by the Grand Bahama Human Rights Association (GBHRA) to the Inter American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) on behalf of the five Bahamians, including the GBHRA president Fred Smith. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement said that in the petition, the Bahamians claim that “their lives are in danger because of their political advocacy, and that some of them have had to flee The Bahamas. “The petitioners seek to cause the IACHR to request that The Bahamas adopt precautionary measures to prevent irreparable harm to their lives,” the statement said, adding that the “Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Immigration in its role as the competent authority of the Government is facilitating the Government's reply to the Petition.” It noted that it is a truism that highly visible and voluble civic engagement is a hallmark in every era of open, democratic society. The statement said civic engagement by the general public, and by the petitioners in their political advocacy, is in the governance and institutional life of The Bahamas a natural, unfettered element in the identity of The Bahamas as a modern, open democracy. “The findings in this matter are to be reported in the coming days in the Government's full reply to the IACHR,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Immigration added.
The Trinidad-based Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA), is dismissing suggestions that along with regional governments it is trying to “cover up the real figures” of the mosquito-borne Zika virus cases in the region. In a statement issued recently, CARPHA reiterated an earlier position that positive Zika cases confirmed by laboratory testing represents only the “tip of the iceberg. “This means that the number of confirmed Zika cases published in the media are only a small number of infected persons, who were tested and confirmed as positive for having the disease,” CARPHA added. CARPHA's executive director, Dr. C. James Hospedales said “often times when the figures of confirmed laboratory cases of diseases such as
Hospedales
Chikungunya and Zika are reported to the media, the public reacts with surprise and suspicion, even commenting that the government and CARPHA are trying to cover up the real figures.” Hospedales said that this is far from the truth as reported figures are only laboratory confirmed positive cases and do not represent

University postpones tuition increase The Vice Chancellor of the University of Guyana, Professor Ivelaw Griffith says he is prepared to recommend a postponement of the five percent increase in tuition fees after students staged a peaceful protest at the institution on Monday. “I am going to be proposing to the body that has the final say in this, the financing general purpose committee that we no longer proceed with the five percent this year,” Griffith said, noting that he has already met with the University of Guyana Students Society (UGSS) leadership. The students said they had been informed of the GUY$8,000 hike by e-mails and that the increased fees come at a time when the UG has not improved facilities. They also said some classrooms were extremely hot. The protestors, mainly first and second year students, said their action was also to show their disappointment that the university had increased fees without any discussions with the student body. Professor Griffith told students that they deserve more than his apology for the sudden hike imposed upon them, and said the university had not done what they were supposed to have done administratively in relation to the email received by students, announcing the change.

Talk UP
What do you think about Hurricane Matthew? Lorraine: Sunrise, Fl – I am not scared. I am just expecting a lot of rain and breeze. I am not scared in the least. I don't fear, I always am prepared, I have my little stuff, I just came and got my fruits and I thought of something just this morning, just boil a few eggs hard and have them.
John: Davie, Fl – Time for pancakes and a storm tomorrow. Do I think it's going to pass? You don't know. It's like a woman; you just don't know. I'm prepared, got my water, got my ice, got my canned foods... oh my God, Chef Boyardee ravioli, prepared!
Wilson: Lauderhill, FL – What I think – we need to be prepared because it's been a long time since we’ve had a big one coming, now I think everybody should stay on edge because we gotta be prepared. I try my best, I try to get candles, dry goods, water is the most important. If you know you're sick, you got some type of medicine, try to get your medicine, cover your window, all those basic things we usually do. It's only God who can keep us safe the way we really wanna be safe.
Lourdes: Dominican Republic – I think it's pretty scary, I think it's frightening that it has caused so much damage in the islands and it's frightening to think of what damage it can cause for us here. I am preparing absolutely; shopping, getting the shutters up, and just preparing in general.
Winston: Lauderhill, FL – We just have to prepare, get ready and deal with what comes. I'm just picking up a few things that I need and everything else is good to go.
Vernon: Pembroke Pines, FL – I think it's very big, very powerful. It's probably going to stay off the coast, if you're on the intercoastal from Broward on up, you should be very careful, prepare. If you're further inland, take the furniture off your patio. I'm not sure about the shutters if you're further west like say past 441 up to Sunrise.
Claudette: Sunrise, FL – Well, we haven't had a hurricane in so long so everyone is panicking now. I hope everything is gonna be cool. I'm not panicking because what's gonna happen is gonna happen. I live in the older people community so everybody is around me – that's my third trip to the store because everybody else cannot go, so I'm trying to help everybody else.
Barbara: Sunrise, FL – I think it's worrisome, I believe we have to be prepared. It’s better to be over-prepared and it ends up being a simple storm, than not preparing at all. So, so far I'm ready, I just don't have flashlights, so I'm searching for flashlights on my lunch.
Fasha: Sunrise, FL – I think it's gonna hit and it's going to be a disaster so I'm ready. I have my shutters up, I have snacks, food, my 4 cases of water, my pet supplies, so I'm just ready and afterwards I have to go to work because I'm on call.
Richard: Sunrise, FL – I'm a little concerned about the hurricane, all it's gotta do is veer to the left a little bit and it's gonna cause catastrophic damage here. Hopefully it'll veer to the right unfortunately for the people in the Bahamas, they're going to get it either way. How prepared am I? I've got beer! Honestly I've got water, I'm prepared.

Don't waste the right to vote Although millions of Americans, including citizens who originated from other countries, have the right to vote in the nation's elections, this right is generally taken for granted, and under-appreciated, especially by the younger generation. It's important voters understand how privileged is this right to vote, and why this right shouldn't be taken for granted, and most importantly why it shouldn't be wasted. Most Americans may be aware that up until 1965 the majority of black Americans were precluded the right to vote. However, long before then, religion, economics, age, and gender were also factors that denied some Americans that right. It wasn't until the late 18th century that Catholics, Jews and Quakers, and poor white men who were not property owners, were given the right to vote. It was not until the 1920s that women, white women, were allowed to vote, and not until the 1960's were young people under 21 years, and at least age-18 were allowed. Before 1965, following loss of lives, bloodshed, and persistent harassment, AfricanAmericans were denied voting rights mainly for racist, economic and literate reasons. Even when some states gave African-Americans voting rights many were unable to register to vote because somehow the authorities ensured very few passed the literacy test which was a criterion to register. Today, although some states like Florida withhold the right to vote from ex-felons, and some still maneuver to frustrate voter registration processes and ease of voting to some voter blocs, it's relatively easy to register to vote and vote. Ironically, because of this relative ease the historical struggle for voters' rights may be lost on several new voters, presenting real danger of this right being wasted. This right is wasted when registered voters refuse to turn out to vote for elections. Those
who fought for this right did so explicitly to be able to elect individuals they want to represent them at various levels of government. Those who refuse to vote in public elections are discarding the right to decide who represents them. Not voting would be a waste of your voting rights, simply because one doesn't like the candidates. A month before the elections a significant percentage of voters, according to various polls, have indicated an unwillingness to vote because of disliking both candidates. However, not voting for this reason is wasting the privilege and power each voter has to decide who will be the next American president. American voters have the right, responsibility and good judgement to vote for the candidate they believe more likely to make life better for themselves and their families even if they're not thrilled with that candidate's personality. Not voting risks placing the responsibility for the government of the nation in wrong hands for the next four years. Neither should the right to vote be wasted by voting for a presidential candidate who has no logical chance of being elected. Granted, America is a proud, proven democracy. Anyone can qualify to run as president. But, although Americans historically elected presidents from the Whig and Republican-Democratic parties, since 1869 presidents have been elected from either the Democratic or Republican parties. This pattern will remain unchanged in 2016. A third party candidate won't be elected.
Therefore, what practical sense is there for voters to use their precious right to vote in voting for a third party candidate? Isn't this wasting one's voting right? In the current presidential campaign it appears absurd that some registered Democrat voters, dissuaded by Clinton's candidacy, but opposed to Trump, are indicating they'll voting for a third party candidate. Aren't these voters aware a vote for the third party candidate is essentially voting for Trump's election? These voters should think responsibly and sensibly. In recent weeks, Trump's campaign has been wooing Black voters, a traditional Democratic voting bloc. Trump has tried to demean the support blacks have for the Democratic Party. Surely, he's aware he'll never win the black vote. However, it's suspected his objective is to foster disenchantment for the Democratic Party among black voters, hoping they won't turn out to vote. These voters must be cautious to not waste their voting right. Not voting for Clinton and other Democratic candidates is essentially boosting Trump's and the Republican chances of victory. Of all voters, blacks must effectively utilize their voting right. The upcoming presidential/general elections are too vital for any registered voter not to vote. There are too many critical advantages at stake; advantages that could be removed if voters waste the right to vote that Americans have struggled for since the late 18th century.

LA SECTION HAITIENNE
Haitians ocking to Tijuana with U.S. dreams Regardless of the warning last month from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, many Haitians have camped out to try and cross the border at Tijuana. Although risking detention and deportation, the flow of undocumented Haitians has continued. Tijuana's shelters have reported an overflow of people waiting their turn. Johnson Tima, a 28year-old migrant from Gonaives in northern Haiti told reporters that a lot of people have sold their land and car to pay for the journey. “We come because of the situation in our country.” Tima, who arrived in Tijuana last week, expects to stay in the city over the next three weeks as he awaits his October 27 appointment at the San Ysidro Port of Entry for processing by U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers. Monday, hundreds of migrants lined up by a trailer operated by Mexico's National Migration Institute to get stamps on their Haitians' Mexican travel document with a date for processing at the
U.S. port. Since May, San Ysidro has been the setting of an unprecedented flow of Haitian migrants without U.S. entry documents, more than 4,300 from October 2015 through August 31, 2016. Most have come by land from Brazil, where they moved to find work after Haiti's 2010 earthquake. The U.S. government suspended deportations to Haiti after the 2010 earthquake, and those
arriving at the border without documents typically have been released on a humanitarian parole as they wait to appear in U.S. immigration court. Homeland Security announced in September that Haitians would no longer receive special treatment, and will now face an “expedited removal” process that involves detention and deportation. In Tijuana, few seem to have been deterred or discouraged by the news, and several said they were not certain what it meant. Caribbean American Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke, daughter of Jamaican immigrants, released a statement expressing her concern over the decision to resume deportation of undocumented Haitians, saying that “even though Haitian infrastructure is not what it was since the 2010 earthquake, the Caribbean nation has been contending with a cholera epidemic brought on by peacekeepers from the United Nations which has afflicted hundreds of thousands of people and killed some 9,000 people in the country.”
Man Dodo Foundation in Miami works to aid Haiti
Hurricane Matthew has now made it out of Haiti as it turned westward toward the US however, a south Florida organization has already begun to work toward helping people left harmed in the aftermath. Miami Gardens based the Man Dodo Humanitarian Foundation is seeking help in gathering supplies and clothing to ship to Haiti. "The one thing good we have going for us is that the road from Port-au-Prince to Cayes is very good and I left there, I traveled that road late Saturday night, that road is very good," Jeff Lozama of Man Dodo said. The Man Dodo Humanitarian Foundation was forced to move up their schedule in order to secure a delivery of medicine ahead of the storm. The foundation is asking everybody to donate over-the-counter medication such as Tylenol, Motrin, Aleve, medication for gastrointestinal systems such as Zantac, Tums, Prilosec. These medications, though not life altering here in the US can make a world of difference in Haiti. Sandy Dorsainvil, previous Director at the Little Haiti Cultural Center in Miami said, “We've learned from the past that it doesn't really make sense to wait until the hurricane actually hits land to start galvanizing everyone and activating all our different networks.”

the Haitian National Police and a United Nations logistics team were scheduled to begin moving ballots and other materials to voting centers. The CEP said damages to roads and voting centers especially in the southwestern towns of Nippes and Grand'Ainse, and the impact of individuals from the storm who were to be assigned as election workers, made it necessary to postpone the elections. The presidential and legislative elections were originally held on October 25, but a rerun election was scheduled for January as there was no clear winner. However, the January election was postponed resulting from strong protests following frontrunner presidential candidate Jude Celestin's stance that he would not contest the elections until government officials addressed allegations of fraud that were related to the October 25 elections. Celestin agreed with the Decision to postpone the Oct 9 elections saying it was more important to assist people who were affected by the hurricane than to hold an election. However, he also said he hopes the CEP announces a new date as soon as possible so that regardless of the conditions, there is a new president who takes office in Haiti on Feb 7. The Obama administration in the US which has been pushing for the elections to be completed, indicated understanding the reason for the postponement while saying it hopes the rerun is held soon.

with Attorney Caroly Pedersen Question: I recently immigrated to Florida and have my Residency. Now I need your guidance to make my family issue be a success. My husband and I have been married for many years, but he was not eligible to get a green card along with me because he has been living here in Florida and overstayed his visa several years ago. My son who is 22 years old, and he likewise overstayed his visa as well. As a new green card holder, is it possible that I can be your client in helping me filing for their green cards as soon possible. My son is over 21, is there a chance for him to go through or is there an easy way that you can recommend, that his case will not be too lengthy? Keep up the good work. I will be your client soon. please reply. god bless you. Answer: Sorry to hear that your husband and son have immigration issues. Now that you are a U.S.
Resident, you can file to sponsor both your husband and son. Generally, spouses and children of Residents (Green Card holders) are not eligible to adjust status in the U.S., once they have overstayed and are no longer in legal immigration status. However, under new policies, a Waiver may be available, but not until the “Priority Date” becomes current for the family member you are sponsoring. Spouses of Residents have an Immigrant Visa waiting line of about 1 ½ years. Adult, single children are about 6+ years. So if no other immigration reform in the coming years offers a solution, the provisional Waiver may allow both your husband and son to obtain Residency once their Priority Dates become current. My best recommendation is that we petition for them now, to get them in the waiting queue. The longer you wait, the longer the waiting line. You can give me a call today and we can discuss it further.
Immigrants have positive impact on the economy – report The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NAS) recently issued a report which confirms that Immigrants and their descendants make valuable contributions to “economic growth, innovation, and entrepreneurship” in the U.S.. Called: The Economic and Fiscal Consequences of Immigration, the report provides a comprehensive study on the economic impact of immigration. The study concludes that Immigrants and their children are vital to providing new workers and taxes to support the U.S. economy and social security contributions for the benefit for Baby Boomers as they age and retire.

What you still don't know about breast cancer The topic of breast cancer can feel familiar — from October walks to pink ribbons, Americans know breast cancer. That is, until you or a loved one is diagnosed. Suddenly, breast cancer moves from a topic that feels championed to a topic that is entirely too new, too unknown and too fresh. Suddenly, there is not enough information or resources to help a family cope. Nearly all Americans are aware that breast cancer poses a serious health threat to both women and men, but despite the vast awareness, many don't know what it really means to fight this disease. According to a recent study conducted by Ford's breast cancer awareness initiative, Warriors in Pink, more than 40 percent of Americans are unfamiliar with the day-to-day challenges patients face while in treatment, and even more, nearly 75 percent admit that they are unsure how to best support patients. Loved ones not knowing how to help makes a difference because family and friends are proven to be patients' greatest resources for getting through treatment. Supporters may not know where to start in providing support, feeling that the issues facing patients are too big for them to solve. But what you still don't know about breast cancer is that the little things matter more than ever. In fact, the ability to maintain day-to-
day routines during treatment is one of breast cancer patients' top concerns — second only to life expectancy. “In terms of the day-to-day, it's those tasks that were hardest for me,” says breast cancer survivor, Jenn Nudelman. “So my friends and family just came and did things. They didn't give me a choice. A lot of times people reach out and say, 'What can I do?' But I'm not a person who asks for help. It was those friends who didn't even ask, just acted, that I really shared the journey with.” The key to care and being able to “just act” is being familiar with what types of support patients need most. When asked what type of support that is, patients report needing the most help with daily activities like household chores, errands and meal preparation while undergoing treatment. “People brought meals to me,” says survivor Lisa Hedenstrom, “and my husband organized a lot of the logistics — taking me to appointments and helping me organize those appointments. Family and friends would come help with tasks for me, too. Because of them, I didn't have to worry about grocery shopping or other types of tiring daily chores.” Another survivor, Lori Redunski, could relate. “My husband hired a cleaning crew to come in and my kids would come home and see the lines in the carpet, smell the cleanser and feel comfortable in their home. It made our life so

much easier,” she says. These daily tasks are often overlooked, but every action taken to help patients to focus on their health and fighting this disease makes a difference. “There are missing things that people don't think about,” says survivor Heidi Floyd. “For example, if you need your side walk shoveled because of the snow, your lawn mowed or your pets cared for. Who has energy to walk their dog when they're doing eight or nine hours of chemo or daily radiation?” While help with these daily tasks undeniably lessens the burden on breast cancer patients, it's important to remember that emotional care is also vital for those going through treatment. “Through it all, you need at least one supporter who is genuinely there to do just that, to support you; to pray with you and to make you laugh,” says survivor Deborah Hayes. “Amidst trying to be strong throughout treatment and recovery, and making sure that everything in your personal life still gets accomplished, one really does need that supportive friend or group to share your innermost feelings.” To empower friends and family to take action and support the breast cancer patients in their lives, Ford Warriors in Pink offers free support services that make it easy to respond to their greatest needs — including cleaning services, meal kit deliveries, alternative hospital wear,
online scheduling tools and more. These resources, available on their website at www.fordcares.com, allow loved ones who don't know how to help to simply click and “just act” — without being asked. Additionally, the site offers tips and ideas on how to help patients have more good days during their journey. “I was blessed with a great family and friends that were there to bring me support,” Redunski says. “But when people don't have that support, they really need to feel comfortable with the resources that are available to them — whether through their doctors or online.” Take the time to learn how you can make the little things add up to a supportive journey for the breast cancer patients in your life.

Jamaica spared Jamaica has had her fair share of hurricanes - including Hurricane Gilbert that slammed into the island on September 12, 1988, killing 40 Jamaicans and dumping over 30 inches of rain in some sections of the country. Prime Minister Andrew Holness in his address to the nation a few days ago said Matthew – then a Category 5 hurricane, could have a severe impact on the country. Jamaicans, known for their humour and resilience took everything in stride. Pictures circulated across social media - of cars being wrapped in plastic, homes being tied to metal

railings and the list went on. The warnings were issued in earnest and most, if not all, heeded calls from the National Meteorological Centre, the local disaster management agency and the government to be prepared. However, a few hours before the expected impact - Matthew shifted and instead of focusing Jamaica, took aim at the French Caribbean speaking nation of Haiti. Early reports from Haiti are that Matthew had a devastating impact on southwestern Haiti with winds up to 140 mph and torrential rainfall. Five people were confirmed killed, several farms destroyed, at least 1,855 homes

He said Haiti is currently facing its biggest humanitarian event since the 2010 earthquake. As Matthew focused on the island of Hispaniola, Jamaica picked up the pieces and slowly returned to normal. By Wednesday, the bus service in the Corporate Area had resumed, schools reopened as well as the Norman Manley International Airport. With Jamaica being spared what could

Results from the College Board Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) taken by South Florida senior students earlier this year or last year revealed impressive performance by Miami-Dade County Public Schools' (M-DCPS) students. The report indicated these seniors performed better than students in other South Florida and Florida school Districts with scores increasing in Reading, Mathematics and Writing. Reacting to the impressive results, MiamiDade Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho said, “Our students continue to do exceptionally well on state and national assessments. “The results of the College Board SAT demonstrate that our students are not only outpacing their state and national counterparts, but are emerging from high school with superior college and career readiness skills. They are fully engaged academically and our instructional staff and programs are among the best in the nation. All of Miami-Dade County should revel in this outstanding achievement for our students and teachers.” An analysis of the M-DCPS SAT results indicted: increase in the average scores in Reading, Mathematics, and Writing; while the average scores nationally and for Florida schools declined. The scores achieved by Miami-Dade students in Critical Reading increased by 16 points, in Mathematics by 12 points, and 13 points in writing. 34 county senior high schools, Mathematics scores higher in 28, and Writing scores higher in 29 schools. Meridith Brandt, math teacher at a Cutler Ridge, Miami-Dade high school, praises the District “for the leadership offered by Miami-Dade School District in ensuring the 2016 graduating class is effectively prepared to either enter fouryear colleges or the job market.” She said the District's leadership “went a long way to cope with the challenges faced by both students and teacher.” Substantiated by information received from the office of M-DCPS, Brandt cited that the District provided students and teachers with various SAT prep materials, online resources, and professional development in the area of course and test instructions. The District said these initiatives helped to strengthen teaching strategies and student's course skills assessed by the SAT. “The very positive SAT results achieved by our students is a reflection of the success of the instructions and focus on enhancing teacher's skills in Critical Reading, Math, and Writing,” Brandt said. Miami resident, Olivia Theobalds, also had high praise for the Miami-Dade School District. “The preparation given to my daughter for the SAT was exceptional. At first she was very nervous about the test, but the hands-on preparation she received eventually made her very confident. She passed the test impressively, which made her acceptance into a local college much easier.”

Miami Commission Chairman Keon Hardemon & The Southeast Overtown/Park West Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) have announced the grand opening of Top Value Supermarket, the first major grocery store in Overtown. The lack of no large grocery store currently located in Miami's Overtown neighborhood, and the lack of one anywhere locally for years, has given the city a negative connotation as a “food desert”. With the opening of this grocery store, its residents will have access to fresh produce, quality meats, alternate food options, and items without having to leave town. Now, with the option to live and shop local, hopes of stimulating the economy are now greater. The CRA invested $2.2 million to renovate the interior and exterior of the Overtown Plaza. The company received a total of $600,000, $200,000 grant and a $400,000 loan, in funding from the CRA to assist with construction cost for the build out of the 17,158 square foot store.

Windies Women to face off with England in 5 series ODI
Strikers support Breast Cancer Research, lose goalie to U.S. National Team
West Indies Women cricket team will take on England in 5 match series of One Day International (ODI) matches running from October 8 to October 19.
The Fort Lauderdale Strikers Goalkeeper Mathias Reynares, has joined the US Under-19 Men's National Team for a training camp in Chula Vista, California until October 10. Reynares participated in the Weifang Cup with the U.S. Men's National Team and has served as the reserve goalkeeper for each of the last four North American Soccer League matches. “This is great opportunity for Mathias and important for our club to get a player called into the U.S. National Team,” said Strikers Head Coach and General Manager Caio Zanardi.
The first two matches will be held at the Trelawny Multiplex Stadium in Jamaica and the final three at Sabina Park in Kingston, Jamaica. The last three of the ODIs will count towards the International Cricket Council (ICC) Women's Championship, a multi-year, bilateral competition between the top eight international women's sides. These will lead to automatic qualification for the top four teams into the 2017 ICC Women's World Cup set to be hosted by the England & Wales Cricket Board. The Windies currently stand in second place in the standings with 20 points, 10 behind current ODI World champions Australia, and one ahead of England. They are due to complete their schedule of ICC Women's Championship matches in November on the road against India. The 13-member squad does not include Kyshona and Kycia Knight and Shakera Selman, who were part of the World T20-winning team earlier this year. Offspinner Anisa Mohammed has been appointed vice-captain.
