Bringing The Voting Message To SoFlo Former first lady, Michelle Obama, is in South Florida to rally Democratic voters in the state who have until Oct. 9th deadline to register to vote for the November 6th election.

Caribbean Leaders Begin Address At UN Several Caribbean Community, (CARICOM), leaders are at UN headquarters in New York for the 73rd session of the United Nations' General Assembly, (UNGA). The heads of state of Haiti, Jamaica and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines were the first Caribbean leaders to address the General Assembly this year, doing so on Thursday, Sept. 27th. In his address, Jamaica's Prime Minister Andrew Holness has told world leaders that while Small Island Developing States, (SIDS), continue to strengthen partnerships around the world, economic independence will ultimately secure resilience for all SIDS. Holness noted Jamaica and other SIDS continue to work to resolve its economic issues and seek greater opportunities regardless of size and development. And he said that the Jamaican government continues on A8 UN Council

Her arrival in South Florida is part of a national tour by the organization 'When We All Vote,' which she co-chairs. The appearance will cap off what the organization has billed as a “week of action,” after holding voter registration drives across the country from Sept. 22nd to Sept. 29th. This is the second appearance Mrs. Obama will make on behalf of the organization, which also has as its co-chairs: actor Tom Hanks, “Hamilton” creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, NBA player Chris Paul and the singers Janelle Monáe, Faith Hill and Tim McGraw. She held a rally Sunday in Nevada, where she told about 2,000 voters: “We get the leaders

we vote for. We get the policies we vote for. And when we don't vote, that's when we wind up with government of, by and for other people.” Although her husband, former President Barack Obama, has made campaign stops pushing for Democratic turnout, Michelle Obama has attempted - somewhat unsuccessfully - to make her appearances non-partisan. Rallygoers in Nevada cheered her husband when his name was mentioned, and she jokingly told the audience “Stop this” when one yelled she should run for president.

Mrs. Obama also released a PSA for the group, reminding Americans of “What's At Stake” in each election. “This election is your chance to hold your leaders accountable,” she stated. “It's how you make your voice heard on everything from your kids' education to the safety of your community. So there is a lot at stake this November, and in every election”, said Mrs. Obama. The PSA will run onLeon digital platforms across the country over the next few weeks, as voter registration Bailey deadlines near in many states. The campaign also recently launched its text message campaign which allows people to text WeAllVote to 97779 to register to vote.” People interested in attending the Miami rally can go to the When We All Vote website. To register to vote, go to Florida's online registration website.

This Jamaican American Is A New Face Of Cover Girl A Jamaican-American model and singer has now become one of the faces of the Cover Girl make-up line. Nefatari Cooper, known as simply Nefatari, has made history as the first reggae artist to become the new face for the brand's TruBlend Matte Made Foundation and Exhibitionist lipsticks. Before becoming a reggae singer, Nefatari, whose parents gave her the name inspired by Egypt's legendary Queen Nefertiti, was a fulltime model working with fashion lines that included Tommy Hilfiger and black hair magazines. She also started as a background singer for Lindsey Lohan and Emma Bunton. (Baby Spice). Nefatari put her modeling career on hold to follow her real passion in music and released a number of songs including “Rail Up”, “Talk Yuh Talk” and recently, “Forever.” But as her career unfolded, Nefatari says she decided to redo her entire image and returned to modeling as a way to rebrand herself. The return to modeling, she said, also represented a logical step towards marketing her music as she saw other performers who gained

Jamaican PM Declares State Of Emergency In Corporate Area A State of Public Emergency has been declared in sections of the Corporate Area of Kingston, Jamaica. The announcement was made on Sunday by Prime Minister Andrew Holness during a press conference at Jamaica House. The enhanced security measures include several communities, such as Denham Town and Trench Town, that have become crime hotspots across the island. The latest announcement is a continuation of the government's use of emergency powers in the fight against crime. Holness who is also country's defense minister said the measure became necessary because the capacity of the force was limited to dealing with the high levels of criminal activity islandwide. “The government considers the crime situation in these areas to be over and above the capacity of existing law enforcement,” the prime minister said. “The objective is therefore to degrade

and erode the capacity of criminal organizations to operate and control these spaces to break and indeed challenge the culture of lawless that exits in some communities in these areas and ultimately to provide the space in which law-abiding citizens and regular policing can work together to provide peace and harmony in these areas.” He, however, told reporters that his administration is not contemplating an island-wide State of Emergency. Meanwhile, leader of the main opposition People's National Party (PNP), Dr. Peter Phillips expressed concern about “unending States of Emergencies.” According to Phillips, who was a former National Security Minister, the PNP still awaits confirmation of more long-term initiatives to counter the incidence of serious crimes, outside of these security measures which should only be short term in duration.

St Lucia PM Brushes Aside No-Confidence Motion Saint Lucia's Prime Minister, Allen Chastanet, has brushed aside plans by the main opposition, St. Lucia Labour Party, (SLP), to file a motion of no confidence in his ruling United Workers Party, (UWP), administration. The Opposition leader and leader of the SLP, Phillip J. Pierre, last week announced that the opposition would file the motion and would await a date from the Speaker to debate the motion. The UWP controls 11 of the 17 seats in the Parliament and Pierre acknowledged that all six opposition legislators would be voting for the motion, adding “we will leave each minister to his conscience”. But Chastanet told reporters that while “any parliamentarian can call for a vote of no confidence … very rarely do you see it succeed.” “I am confident that this one will have no success other than (the opposition) calling attention to themselves,” Chastanet added. TALKUP

Talk UP Aretha Franklin was called the Queen of Soul for her soulful songs. Do you think the current music and singers have lost that soulful feeling? Sandy, Miramar, FL "No, I don't think the current music and singers have lost that soulful feeling because at her funeral/tribute you could see singers that sang with a soulful feeling. Aretha Franklin was definitely the Queen of soul music but in her death I can only hope that she inspires more artists to touch base with the powerful soul music. The more people that start with soul music, the better it will be! Think about it, the way rappers are coming out these days competing to be the 'best' - but eventually people will get tired of the same old aggression and anger / hate in rap music."

Karim, South Florida “I think in some ways yes! Today's music has lost that soulful feel but not all music. Rap music, absolutely. Soul music has its roots in traditional African-American gospel music sang with passion based on religious styles- both lyrical and instrumental. There are still a few gospel singers and I pray they will continue on their path of soul music."

Devaunte, Miami, FL "Yes, I think current music and singers have lost that soulful feeling because ever since people have been able to download free music off the Internet, the music industry has been struggling. They don't have the funds like they had in the past to spend towards talent scouts and taking lots of risks. So, there are less and less bands/artists getting signed. It's more about "popularity" than it is about art. They generally mold a new artist to become extremely popular rather than letting the artist do what they do."

Omar, Sunrise, FL "My opinion on current music is that it has definitely lost the soulful feel, but I do believe it will change again because music does change and always will. In the 70's people were all about a band and being able to watch a band the traditional way. Now-a-days singers don't sing much but rap instead."

Anastasia, Plantation, FL "Yes, I think current music has lost that 'soulful' feel. These days most singers don't even write their own music, they have ghost writers do it just to grasp the attention of the socially accepted music now. I think artists are afraid to show real passion if it isn't the norm or what people are already used to hearing. Aretha Franklin, may she rest in peace, sang from her heart, real life stories and tings she or a loved one went through. Aretha Franklin 's track record (musically) is amazing from billboards to R&B and becoming the most charted female in history."

Byron, Sunrise, FL "Absolutely! Music in this generation has completely lost that soulful trait. For one, all singers and rappers talk about is violence, sex and hate crimes. Soul music is so rare to catch a person listening to! You could be on a bus or other public transportation but all you'll catch people listening to now is the same songs that are played on the radio continuously. Not that it's wrong because everyone has their preference, like I personally prefer R&B music because even if it's not a gospel or religious song, 9 times out of 10 I'm still able to feel based on lyrics and tone."

Sandra, Sunrise, FL “I do believe current music and singers have lost that soulful feeling. There's not a lot of emotion in music anymore, no more feeling. Today's generation has a lot of pride when it comes to expressing true genuine emotions... showing emotions these days is like a sign of weakness so today's artist seem rather 'hard' and sing and rap about gang banging and drugs and other useless topics."

“Me Too” Movement Continues To Spark Strong Debate This week's sentencing of popular African-American comedian/actor, Bill Cosby, and accusations of sexual impropriety against US Supreme Court Justice nominee, Brett Kavanaugh, ensures the controversy surrounding the “Me Too” Movement” remains relevant. The movement is essentially one against the prevalence of sexual assault and harassment against women, especially in the workplace. Since the movement was initiated in October 2017, several prominent men in various sectors of American life have been accused of sexual harassment and/or abuse and have been removed from lofty positions. As the movement persists, it has implicated men outside the workplace, but the common thread is most of the men were middle age or older men who held positions of power, are wealthy and committed the alleged sexual assault or harassment years before. Listening to a mixed gender televised group discussion a few days ago, as the first anniversary of the movement approaches, one senses the bitter division between the genders on the matter. One young man, in particular, fueled the discussion to a boiling pitch when he referred to the “Me Too” movement as one in which women were “strategic investors.” According to this young man, women who were sexually harassed and didn't report the act immediately after it happened did so deliberately with the objective of publicly accusing the male perpetuator when he either gained a position of prominence or acquired great wealth. “It's like some women place their unfortunate experience in a life bank, then make the conscious decision to withdraw dividend in kind or revenge when the man becomes a prominent figure,” he stated. This argument is not peculiar to this young man.

Although men have shown unique sensitivity in not publicly commenting on the “Me Too” movement, the rash of accusations and the frequency of prominent men falling from grace, have seen many expressing similar views in private conversations. In fact, in the Caribbean-American community, several women have even joined men in questioning this long delay between when a woman is sexually harassed or abused and when she made her unfortunate experience public. Although Bill Cosby has been convicted, there are men and women who still find the accuser's allegations dubious, because they took place years ago. Not a few people have commented that the long-time gap made the accusations seems contrived and even a set up. On the other hand, some of those who have been victims of sexual abuse/harassment, said prior to the advent of the “Me Too” movement, they were reluctant to publicly accuse their abusers for fear of repercussion or not being believed when they made such allegations. Some, naturally so, feared losing the job they were already in by accusing the men who supervised them or were executives in the businesses where they

worked. To make matters worse, the “Me Too” movement is surrounded by sad double standards. In recent weeks, it has been seen where men accused of sexual impropriety has supporters if he is a strong, or potentially strong asset to a business or political organization. Some people who are quick to condemn the average Joe who sexually assaulted a woman are willing to give a reprieve to the “Mr. Big” who committed the same act. It's seen that while many condemn sexual abuse and harassment in general and are quite outspoken about these abuses, they are ready to give a pass on similar abuse committed when the man was in his youth. If a woman is forced into a sexual act or harassed sexually yesterday or 30-years ago, the act is still wrong. If the act was committed by a poor unemployed man or a rich, prominent businessman or politician, the act is still wrong. Regrettably, the “Me Too” movement, in which women are now more courageous and willing to publicly accuse their abusers, started too late, making it difficult to accept. And regrettably at times, the movement is made to seem too much of a fad when publicized at high profile public events and when the media revels in accuser and accused cases to enhance their ratings. The movement cannot be one in which men are glibly accused of sexual improprieties without empirical evidence given, or after long time has elapsed, making the accusations seem dubious. These accusations, although they can never be condoned once made, whether true or false, damages a man's character. Even if the accusation is false, the man risks being forever tainted. Men must stop behaving badly with women but it's important that women making allegations of sexual harassment do not seem, as the young man in the group discussion said, as if they are being “strategic investors.”

State Will Lose Millions If Haitians With TPS Are Deported Attorney General of New Jersey, Gurbir Grewal, says the state could suffer $872 million in economic damage if its Haitian residents lose their Temporary Protected Status, (TPS) and are deported. Grewal urged a federal court not to dismiss a pending lawsuit that challenges the TPS terminations. In addition, there are approximately 9,000 U.S. citizen children living in New Jersey whose parents are TPS holders. Deporting their parents would traumatize the children, bringing serious emotional harm to thousands of families, Grewal said. In an amicus brief filed in U.S. District Court for the

Eastern District of New York, Attorney General Grewal joined Attorneys General for the District of Columbia, Massachusetts, California and other states in arguing that the Court has full authority to review and rule on the Administration's recent termination of TPS for foreign nationals from Haiti, El Salvador and Honduras and terminating TPS for immigrants from the affected countries will harm children, families, businesses, communities and, ultimately, the entire U.S. economy. The Trump administration has said the decision to end TPS for Haitians was made after "extensive outreach" to community members in the U.S. and "significant steps" that Haiti has made since the earthquake to handle the return of its citizens. The U.S. is also rescinding TPS for El Salvador and Honduras.

Inflation Spikes In Haiti Haitians have been forced to shell out more for food and goods as inflation spiked upward last month. The change especially impacted apparel and textiles as well as footwear, food, beverages and tobacco prices which represents more than 50 percent of the household budget. Those goods saw an increase of almost 16 and 15 percent, respectively in August. Rent housing, energy and water spiked up by 14.6 percent while health costs rose dramatically by over 21 percent and transportation by over 4 percent.

HIV/AIDS Is Killing Nearly 20 People A Day In Haiti The dreaded disease HIV/AIDS is killing almost 20 people per day in Haiti, according to the 6th Mortality, Morbidity and Service Utilization Survey conducted by the Haitian Institute of Childhood in collaboration with the Haitian Institute of Statistics and Informatics. The survey found that HIV prevalence is much higher among women who have broken union, especially widows in the country. Overall, the survey found that the HIV prevalence among women and men aged 15-49 increased from 2.2 per cent in 2005-06 and 2012 to 2.0 per cent in 2016-17. The most vulnerable groups are sex workers, homosexuals and prisoners. Researchers also found that the Artibonite Department in Haiti has the highest number of HIV cases followed by the Southeast and North departments, while the Center has the fewest infected. And that the HIV prevalence is lower among women in urban areas, as opposed to men. Similarly, the study points out that the educational level of the population is a determining factor in the spread of the AIDS virus. According to data from the United Nations in the country UNAIDS, Haiti had 7,900 new cases of HIV (2016).

St. Vincent and the Grenadines Prime Minister, Dr. Ralph Gonsalves, used his time to call for small State exceptionalism to be placed at the center of the global discourse and responses addressing climate change. In describing climate change as a multifaceted existential problem, said “major emitters that fail to set and honor ambitious mitigation pledges are committing a direct act of hostility against small island developing States.” Decisive political and development action is urgently needed, Dr. Gonsalves said. The collection was inspired by the natural beauty of the designer's homeland and featured designs made from a custom print fabric, comprising some of the island's tops beaches and waterfalls. House of D'Marsh had its genesis in Spring 2003 when March launched his Spring collection during Caribbean Fashion Week in Jamaica's capital city, Kingston. With an eye for detail and perfection, the New York based March, honed his design skills at the prestigious American Academy of Dramatic Arts, obtaining practical experience while working in the costume department. With a constant pulse on trends and new innovation combination, House of D'Marsh, says it seeks to marry sophistication with fashion-forward sensibility.

Sangster International Named Caribbean's Leading Airport The Sangster International Airport, (SIA), in Montego Bay, has earned the coveted title of the 'Caribbean's Leading Airport' for the tenth year in a row. SIA won the award at the World Travel Awards on September 22nd. Operated by MBJ Airports Limited, SIA emerged as the winner from a pool of 13 Caribbean competitors nominated for the prestigious award. The accolade was first bestowed on SIA in 2005. It won again in 2009 and has won the title again every year since. “We are deeply honoured to be named the Caribbean's Leading Airport for the tenth consecutive year,” commented MBJ CEO Rafael Echevarne.

Rihanna has been given the specific responsibility for promoting education, tourism and investment for the island. Barbados Prime Minister, Mia Mottley, said the government was honored to be able to confer the title on the outstanding Barbadian, who has contributed significantly to raising the island's profile across the world. “Rihanna has a deep love for this country and this is reflected in her philanthropy, especially in the areas of health and education. She also shows her patriotism in the way she gives back to this country and continues to treasure the island as her home,” said Mottley. In accepting her new duties, Rihanna said that she was ready to play her part in creating a new Barbados. “I couldn't be more proud to take on such a prestigious title in my home country,” ,” she stated. “Every Barbadian is going to have to play their role in this current effort, and I'm ready and excited to take on the responsibility. I look forward to working with Prime Minister Mottley and her team to reimagine Barbados.” Rihanna was also appointed as one of Barbados' Cultural Ambassadors in 2008, undertaking promotional work on behalf of the ministry with responsibility for tourism. However, this expanded role takes into consideration her multidimensional achievements and global influence across a much broader range of areas.

British Millionaire Invests Millions Into Jamaican Football Acadmey J

amaica's 2018/19 Red Stripe Premier League might have been a mere two rounds old, but the ballooning hype surrounding Mount Pleasant Football Academy is surreal, to say the least. The new kid on the block kicked off its first match in the nation's top flight football competition with a 2-1 victory away to the defending champion Portmore United at Spanish Town Prison Oval in dramatic fashion – the very last kick of the match. Then a week later in front of adoring partisan fans, which filled the recently refurbished Drax Hall, Mount Pleasant Football Academy put it over last season's beaten finalist Waterhouse Football Club 1-0. Will Mount Pleasant Academy flatter to deceive or will it go all the way and triumph on its first attempt? Only time will tell, but one thing is for certain, the success or failure of the club in the Premier League will be neither here nor there in the overall scheme of things. For theirs is a project far bigger than the group of players and technical staff who have so whetted the appetite of the football loving fans in their quest for football glory. Nestled on 88 acres in the hills of St Ann, in the immediate vicinity of Runaway Bay, Mount Pleasant Football Academy, formerly Stush in the Bush, is owned by Englishman millionaire Peter Gould since 2016, with the long-term goal being a multimillion-dollar investment, which would transform Jamaica's football for many years to come. The Mount Pleasant Academy is expected to feature four football fields, including an artificial turf, stands around the main field, dormitories, canteen, physio labs, staff quarters, classrooms to accommodate 60 students, as well as a number of security points. A multi-purpose sports court and a yoga center are also on the cards. Gould has claimed that he was once a

“I fell in love with Jamaica, and it's a challenge. Everyone told me not to go to the community. I chose not to listen. It's all about the kids, that's the true story. We are not going to sell the kids at 13, 14, we going to grow them here. There are some great talents and great coaches here and we can bring them up into teenagers before they go away if they decide to.” – Peter Gould

business partner with Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich at Chelsea Football Club in England. "I was behind the scene for many years… more on the business side of the club. So much for business; I wasn't paid a salary, it was for love," Gould told the Jamaican media when ground broke for construction back in May. Gould also claimed, "I was involved with Ruud Gullit, Glen Hoddle, (Gianluca) Vialli, Mark Hughes, etc." Last year The Sunday Times featured Peter, now 55, and his 57-year-old brother Nicholas among the top-10 richest in Essex. According to the report, they ran a substantial London property group but were better known as the founders of Southendbased Regis Group (Holdings). They were ranked seventh with 355 million pounds. It is understood that 55 footballers, ages 11 to 15, are now attending the newly opened academy. The boys are being housed on the 88acre property on which the academy is situated. They will benefit from the high school

educational programme, as directed by the ministry of education, in addition to structured football training programmes. This is possibly the first time Jamaica has seen a project like this being undertaken. And it should be remembered that earlier this year Mount Pleasant Academy sent Under-13 and Under-15 teams to international tournaments. The establishment of the physical structure at Runaway Bay, to facilitate the youth teams on their international engagements, and to put together the current team in the Premier League after gaining promotion a few months ago, must have cost a pretty penny. A sum, we argue, he will not be able to recoup any time soon, which clearly emphasizes the long-term nature of this investment. But why has Peter Gould invested so much? "Because I fell in love with Jamaica, and it's a challenge," he says. "As you can see the poverty in the villages surrounding us. Everyone told me not to go to the community. I chose not to listen," he told the Jamaican media. He added: "It's all about the kids, that's the true story. We are not going to sell the kids at 13, 14, we going to grow them here. There are some great talents and great coaches here and we can bring them up into teenagers before they go away if they decide to. "But not everyone is going to be a great footballer, and so my aim is to give them an education. They have to know 4x4 before they

put their football boots on," he stressed. "In financial terms, there isn't a budget, it's a project. I am old enough and experienced not to put a number on because it always exceeds." Gould continued: "Unfortunately it's a not for profits, but if I am the luckiest man in the world, I would probably get my money back. But it's for the love.” Interestingly, former Jamaica Football Federation President Tony James was over the moon earlier this year when ground was broken for the project. He exclaimed that Gould must have been "God sent. Nobody is willing to invest in rural Jamaica and when you look back at our successes in international football, people don't seem to understand, unless rural and city are working hand in hand, it doesn't work.” "So this is a God sent. We could only hope that we could find two or three more people across the length and breadth of Jamaica to give us some support," James added. Hopefully, Gould will stay the journey to see returns on his investment in time, but regardless, Mount Pleasant Football Academy will be a huge gift to Jamaica's football. But this whole project has once again emphasized the need to professionalize the sport in Jamaica if it is to grow to the desired level. Peter Gould has started the ball rolling. Hopefully, others will follow suit.

Law Calls Its Quits Head coach of the beleaguered West Indies cricket team, Australian Stuart Law, has called it quits as head coach just eight months before the start of the ICC World Cup in England.

Stuart Law

Law's resignation hands a severe blow to the regional side's preparation for the event and has left authorities scrambling to find a replacement. Cricket West Indies announced Monday that the 49-year-old would leave his post at the end of the year. This follows nearly two years at the helm, during which time he oversaw the two-time World champions' qualification for cricket's major showpiece but otherwise failed to turn around the fortunes of the struggling side. The announcement of Law's departure also comes days prior to the start of a difficult two-test series against powerful India in Rajkot, casting somewhat of a heaviness over the tour, which also includes five One-Day Internationals and three Twenty20 Internationals. Law, who took up the post last year February, will now join English county Middlesex in the New Year as their new head coach on a four-year deal. CWI chief executive, Johnny Grave, expressed his disappointment, pointing out that West Indies had made “real progress” under Law's guidance.

Reggae Girlz To Make European Debut Against Nottingham Forest Jamaica's Reggae Girlz are set to make their European debut when they play Nottingham Forest Ladies at the City Ground in Nottingham on October 28th. The match that will be a celebration of the Wind Rush generation and of Caribbean Family Culture, forms part of Nottingham Forest Football Club's, (“NFFC”), Diversity and Community Inclusion Agenda. Under the Patronage of George Ramocan, Jamaica's High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, the match will celebrate the arrival of several hundred Jamaican and Caribbean immigrants to Great Britain on the “Empire Wind Rush” 70 years ago. It will also be a centerpiece for a Caribbean Family Fest that will include Jamaican food supplied by local companies, performances by Nottingham's Reggae artists as well as special events for visiting guests from Jamaica, the wider Caribbean and the UK. Jamaica's Senior Reggae Girlz have won all matches of Round One of the Women's World Cup Qualifiers and will participate in the final round of qualifiers in the USA between October 5th and 17th, where they will meet Canada, Costa Rica and Cuba in Group B.

This Spanish Footballer Says He's Faster Than Usain Bolt A Spanish-born soccer player claims he will beat Jamaican-born Olympic sprint, Usain Bolt, on speed on the pitch. Wolves forward, Adama Traore, also known as Adama, says he is faster than Bolt with a ball at his feet. His comments come after being named the fastest player on FIFA 19. The 22-year-old former Barcelona attacker was announced as the quickest player on the popular game at the EA Sports FIFA Ratings Awards in London and he welcomed comparisons to Jamaican athlete Bolt, who holds the 100-metre and 200-m world records. "It is nice to be known on FIFA 19 as the fastest player in the world," said Traore. "But Usain Bolt has started playing for Central Coast Mariners so I might have a rival next season. Clearly Bolt would beat me over 100 meters on the track. But on grass, over 30 meters with a ball at my feet? I'm winning that race every time.” Traore has scored one goal in his four Premier League appearances for Wolves since becoming the club's record signing. Bolt, 32, is struggling to reach soccer fitness levels with the Mariners.

Jamaica Moves Up The CONCACAF Ranks Jamaica has moved up one place in the latest FIFA/Coca Cola world rankings released this week. The Reggae Boyz, who defeated the Cayman Island 4-0 in their latest match up in the CONCACAF Nations League at the National Stadium on September 9th, inched up a place from 54 to 53, to remain the number one ranked Caribbean team and fourth in CONCACAF. Ranked second in the Caribbean is Curacao, who remains at 81st, while Trinidad and Tobago climbed one place to 91st. Rounding out the top five in the Caribbean is Haiti, which remains at 104th on the standings while Antigua slipped a place to 127th.
