BE REMEMBERED BY THE COMMUNITY YOU LOVE

LEGACY GIVING

OUR COMMUNITY IS LUCKY TO HAVE PEOPLE LIKE YOU. LIKE YOUR EVERYDAY ACTIONS, YOUR CHARITABLE GIFTS HAVE AN IMPACT ON OTHERS. THEY FEED THE HUNGRY, SUSTAIN THE ARTS, DELIVER CURES AND EDUCATE MINDS. ENGAGING IN GIVING ALLOWS YOU TO LEAVE YOUR OWN PERSONAL MARK ON THE WORLD.

CONSIDER EXTENDING YOUR GIVING BEYOND YOUR LIFETIME. By leaving a legacy gift to your community, you can make a difference for future generations and share the power and joy of living generously.

PLAN NOW. GIVE LATER.

ALTHOUGH ESTABLISHED TODAY, MANY PLANNED GIFTS BENEFIT THE COMMUNITY AFTER THE DONOR’S LIFETIME. You do not need tremendous wealth to consider a legacy gift; whatever your financial situation, there are gift plans to fit your needs. Legacy gifts are a unique expression of generosity, often times highlighting the causes and charities donors connect to most during their lifetimes. And planned gifts can offer important estate, financial and personal advantages — allowing you to give in the most effective and beneficial manner.

JULIETTE KLEIN SHARPE Julie Sharpe felt truly blessed by her network of friends and her small community. “God takes care of fools and Julie” was something said often by the Skaneateles resident and retired 30-year telephone company employee. Julie’s early age of retirement had afforded her the opportunity to pursue many volunteer activities. In the numerous organizations where she gave her time, she maintained that she received as much from the interaction as those she was there to help. A cancer diagnosis spurred Julie to think critically about the ways that she wanted to honor her friends and show appreciation for these organizations that impacted her so deeply. She chose to set aside a portion of her estate for charity. Sadly, Julie lost her battle with brain cancer at the age of 72. Her thoughtful planning, though, allowed her to leave behind a legacy of generosity that the Community Foundation will use to carry out her charitable wishes in perpetuity. Julie’s many interests and passion for her Skaneateles community came through in the breadth of organizations that she selected to receive support from her fund. From hospice care to local history, she took care to reflect on the many places she had volunteered or benefited from service to make sure that those organizations were included. We feel honored that she chose us as the home of her legacy and pledge to be faithful stewards of her generosity.

WYATT PARKER, FIRST ROBERT & ROBERTA HURD SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT

ROBERT & ROBERTA HURD Roberta and Robert Hurd led fairly modest lives. They were a very devoted couple who were rich in love for one another. They remembered fondly their days in the Phoenix, NY schools where they met in the 1930s. They were always together, enjoying life’s adventures on camping and ski trips. They never had children, but both believed strongly in the importance of a good education, thankful for how well their Phoenix school experience set them up to succeed. Robert died three months shy of their 50th wedding anniversary. Roberta quietly reached out to the Community Foundation to establish a scholarship fund in her husband’s memory. Though Robert and Roberta graduated 70 years earlier, their love of Phoenix and appreciation of their education journey left an impression that motivated them to give back in a big way. Roberta’s love for her husband and their alma mater motivated her gift and that love will live on in the lives of many children who will benefit from it. While the student beneficiaries of the Hurds’ thoughtfulness will not know them, they will surely appreciate their generosity and unselfish desire to invest in their futures.

JOHN F. MARSELLUS Friends and family of John F. Marsellus remember him as a civic leader who truly loved Central New York. His passion for the community was evident through his continuous involvement in many organizations including being a board member of the Community Foundation. Marsellus was the third generation of his family to manage the Marsellus Casket Company in Syracuse. The company, founded by his grandfather in 1872, enjoyed a world-wide reputation for being the leading manufacturer of fine hardwood caskets. In 1973 he established a donor-advised fund, which for nearly 30 years administered his charitable giving. At the time of his death in 2000, his estate plan included naming the Community Foundation in his will as a major beneficiary. He knew this act of generosity would carry on his charitable giving in perpetuity while, at the same time, increase the funding we could distribute to worthy nonprofit organizations. Specifically, the John F. Marsellus Fund supports projects that promote education, the arts, centers of learning, recreation, environmental conservation, local children and health care accessibility. Over the past 15 years, it has supported nearly 1,000 local charitable programs. Additionally, the fund supports and promotes several of our community initiatives including the Marsellus Executive Development Program, which provides leadership enhancement opportunities for nonprofit staff executives. Marsellus once said, “For the future, I have complete faith in the Foundation’s investment stewardship and that my fund will continue to grow and provide support for important community organizations. Just as he did in his daily life, his legacy will continue to enrich the lives of generations of area residents because of his thoughtful planning and commitment to Central New York.

WHAT IS A FUND? WHEN YOU GIVE THROUGH THE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION, we establish a separate and distinct fund to fulfill your stated charitable purpose. The assets are invested and grants are made from the fund, growing in permanency thanks to prudent management. Grants carry the name given to the fund, and your giving endures.

With a legacy fund, you can:

• Support your community and most cherished causes in perpetuity

• Honor your family’s tradition of giving • Make a difference, even after you are gone • Inspire generational generosity • Join other members of our Legacy Society

PATIENTS OF UPSTATE GOLISANO CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL TAKE PART IN A CRAFT ACTIVITY WITH MAGGIE ZICK, CHILD LIFE SPECIALIST. IN 2004, THE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION AWARDED THE LARGEST COMMUNITY GRANT IN ITS HISTORY AT THE TIME, IN PART FROM THE JOHN F. MARSELLUS FUND, TOWARD THE UPSTATE FOUNDATION’S CAPITAL CAMPAIGN FOR THE HOSPITAL’S CONSTRUCTION.

THE LEGACY SOCIETY

THE LEGACY SOCIETY honors individuals who have committed to supporting our community forever through a gift from their estates. Often, these meaningful gifts go unrecognized because they come at the end of a donor’s life. The Legacy Society is our way of acknowledging your commitment to the future — today. If you would like to join this tradition of extraordinary generosity, please let us know so you can be recognized. We would be delighted to provide you with the information necessary to make an informed giving decision.
