business and economic forecast.
In tough times, can you
still get away? Travel deals sweeten the pot for travelers, agents By Jennifer Wing
The market is down. Unemployment is up. People are economizing. Who would think this was the time for a vacation? “Everyone that has the desire to travel and the wherewithal to do so, should consider booking a trip in the next few months,” Joe Janowski, president of Travel Leaders, said. “The sad part about the way the economy is that all vendors associated with travel, such as the airlines, rental cars, hotels and tour operators are finding their business is down. This is good for those who want to travel, because the vendors are looking for business and are therefore offering great deals.” Sandra Ellis agreed that now is the time to book a trip if you’re looking to save money on your vacation. “People should absolutely be taking advantage of travel oppor-

Travel business in CNY One need only to turn on the television to hear reports of companies that are experiencing a dip in business, with layoffs and store closings abounding. But what about the travel business? All travel is down right now,” Janowski said. “It was down in November and December, which is always a down time for travel. Website’s goal: Making shopping, selling on the internet personal, safe, easy By John Caiello, president
Peopleswarehouse.com provides a unique Internet site that supports and enables homebased businesses to succeed in e-commerce. Our goal is to build a loyal, person-to-person trading site. After listening to shop owners’ John Caiello is president feedback, the site is in its third generation and of Peopleswarehouse. has been redesigned, revised and updated. The com. He can be reached public has spoken and we have responded to at jcaiello@peopleswaretheir needs. house.com. Since 1999, we have been developing an Internet company similar to Ebay, but much more unique. We opened our site in January 2005 and have had phenomenal results. In an effort to distinguish us from the well-known giant auction sites, peopleswarehouse.com offers a greater value, a better product, less risks and simplicity in conducting Internet online business. When listing items on that giant’s auction site, the process can be labor intensive. In some instances, there can be more than then 12 separate screens one must continue to click their way through in order to sell their item(s). Detail is important, but we believe simplicity should also be a priority. By simplifying the product listing process, we have made it very easy to build a site, sell product(s), and at the same time, continue to offer many advanced options in e-commerce as a business continues to grow. We have received very positive feedback from our stores, as well as various festivals we’ve attended. Fortune magazine has described the leading auction site’s core customers as the thousands of small businesses that sell products online are in revolt-upsets about the high fees, big business competition, the services it does and doesn’t provide and their own indifference to their
plight. They have no incentive to lower rates. Additionally, they no longer allows sellers to link to a website from their item listings. They have publicly admitted, they are concerned over disgruntled stores/members that are unhappy with the direction they have gone, but decided to go in the direction of commercialism. Their original concept was as an online loyal person-to-person trading community. The future of the small seller on this giant’s site is doubtful. Their loyal customer base now has to compete with the big time commercial peddlers such as J.C. Penny, Home Depot, Disney, and Dell, who are using it to unload overstocked merchandise. They have been raising listing and store fees with a lack of differentiation and a less focused position with its traditional loyal user base. Mom and pop home based businesses, still account for 90 percent of all auction transactions, need their own venue to sell their products and Peopleswarehouse has that venue for them. We provide a very compelling reason for sellers and buyers to join our community including unique features, all stores have their own website hosted completely free by us. We provide online Internet hosting, credit card processing, and standard business reporting (including inventory). We are doing something drastically different: Offering home shops their very own independent web site with no up front or hidden fees. Whether you become a shop owner or are just browsing our site, you will be seeing exciting innovations and experience shopping like no other on the web today. Our future plans will give the shopper the ablility to virtually visit their favorite festival or craft show located all over the world, while experiencing the sites and sounds of actually being at the festivals. For the customer, we offer a rich selection of products from worldwide shop owners. These shop owners may actually have a retail business already established, and will then be able to feature their products online as well. The Global launching of PeoplesWarehouse.com in 2005 was

Peopleswarehouse has provided a complete turnkey, affordable, and unique solution that is not offered on the Internet today. We are considered a turnkey site because there are no hosting fees. We accept all payments for products; provide an easy five minute solution creating uniquely designed web stores with inventory management, order processing, mailing list management, banner advertising, order history, and a very comprehensive product management system. Our stores can act independently or through Peopleswarehouse’s International network of products and stores. You’ve come to know the Craftsman Inn & Conference Center for its quality, hospitality and having beautifully appointed Stickley Furniture. With this in mind, they have made several improvements within the hotel and to their restaurant over the past few months. Most recently, the Craftsman Inn opened a state-of-the-art fitness center featuring treadmills, elliptical, recumbent bike and free weights. The hotel guestrooms all received new mattresses, bed and bath linens, and single cup coffee brewers. The restaurant name has changed to the Limestone Grille,

to a travel agent. “Everyone thinks online services are so great – if you get sick on Tuesday and can’t go, you eat that ticket, no refund, no exchanging it,” he said. “We make sure that doesn’t happen. The perception is that you can buy cheaper online, but that’s not true anymore.” “We have our global distribution system to help book the best rates. Technology in our business is so important, with the how, where, when and how much being kept track of in an organized manner. We are able to keep track of reporting to businesses who travel how they spend their dollars and are able to advise them on streamlining and cost-saving measures,” Janowski said. For instance, through technology, Travel Leaders can research to get the best possible fare for the traveler. “If you want to book from Syracuse to LA next Wednesday, our new technology will give you best fares three days before and after travel and will search airports within 100 miles of your destination to get you the best fare. You could then drive from the airport to your destination and save maybe $500.” So what are the hot trips?
Janowski said the Caribbean cruise trips are the hottest due to the specials that are running. “Disney is always hot, and is running specials as well,” he said. “There are not a lot of specials running for European vacations, but we do group trips, which can save money.” “Hot trips seem to be the same as before with Florida and the Caribbean as popular destinations,” Ellis agreed, and added that cruises and all-inclusive resort stays remain the common types of vacation travel requests received. Are trips in New York gaining in popularity? “We do day bus trips to see the Rockettes in New York City, or to see a Yankee game or the Buffalo Bills,” Janowski said. “Travelers can have a relaxing trip, with movies and refreshments on the bus.” Ellis said, with the exception of travel to New York City, she is not finding travelers to be clamoring to stay within the confines of New York state. “Those travelers that have chosen a visit to Manhattan are finding prices lower than they have been in years with round trip airline tickets often less than $200,” she said. “Overall, the challenges of our weather exceed the challenges of the economy and our Central New York travelers continue to seek warmer weather out of state.”

of 2008, the shortfall of business in ’09 wasn’t as great as in comparing November and December of the two years, so there has been a little bit of a rebound. It will be interesting to see how much rebound. Some Central New Yorkers are taking advantage of the specials. “We find our Central New York travelers to be savvy researchers that are well-read and well-traveled,” Ellis said. “Our travelers are booking escorted tours, as they know them to be a good value for the dollar. Many escorted tour programs offer last year’s rates, making sightseeing and meals less expensive.” Janowski agreed. “Basically, those that are able to travel are booking. Those that are fearful and need to economize are staying put,” he said. “Is there a diminished amount of travel? Absolutely. It will come back when people regain confidence” Agency advantages In a day when many computersavvy travelers are able to book their trips online, why would someone go to a travel agency? Janowski said people don’t realize the advantages of going

have recently added an auction website, Peopleswarehouse.net, to complement our web store. This will enable our customers the choice of either setting up their own web store or selling or buying products through action style bidding similar to Ebay. We have opened more than 500 stores in 48 states and three countries. PeoplesWarehouse.com has had over 15 million site hits with over 1 million visits. In comparison, Ebay had approximately 600,000 hits in their first six months of operation in 1995. Peopleswarehouse is laying the groundwork with strategic advertising plans for direct marketing, branding, magazine advertising, attending major craft shows, press releases, television, radio, mailing brochures and newspaper inserts. In summary, Peopleswarehouse provides a unique forum for the public to transact business through the medium of the Internet. The public wants a vehicle to compete on an equal footing with large corporations at a cost they can afford, in such a way to provide an opportunity to build a business or sell unique one of a kind products using a worldwide network. Based on proven model findings and the enormous untapped potential market, Peopleswarehouse is positioning itself for a vigorous growth pattern associated with Internet companies.

This is a family business and we continue to grow our family through service to our customers and the Central New York community.” Summit has a huge selection of new and pre-owned cars and SUVs to choose from, but being a Ford dealership they are very well known for their trucks. The new 2009 Ford F series is the latest evolution of the best selling truck in America for the past 31 years straight. This dominance happens for a reason. People who drive Ford trucks know what a great vehicle they are and know the new one will be even better. Ford has certainly lived up to that expectation with the new F-150 pickup being named Motor Trend Magazines 2009 Truck of the Year.
Customers who have visited Summit Ford know that service is just as important as selection. Summit is committed to always having the latest technology to ensure a high level of customer satisfaction by continuous improvement and training for all their staff. “Our service staff is top notch and they work hard to keep up with the latest technological developments to maintain our customer’s vehicles,” Kristoff said. A conductor committed to our community Contributed by Kate Haar – Lyons
Conductor Douglas Kinney Frost is frequently praised in the musical world for his driving commitment to education and community outreach. Luckily, when he was appointed as director of music at Syracuse Opera in 2007, he brought these aspirations with him. His goal from his first day on the job was to enrich the musical life of people in Upstate New York and to build an artistic legacy for Syracuse Opera. Kinney Frost’s aspiration for community interaction was realized with the creation of the Syracuse Opera Resident Artist Program this past fall. Based on

The conductor explains, “The program allows us to have artists be part of the community on a regular basis.” With this program, Syracuse Opera is able to go beyond its three performances per year at the Civic Center and travel throughout Tompkins, Cortland, Onondaga, Oswego, and Jefferson counties providing musical education and spreading community awareness of the operatic genre. We’re Just Back From Our Annual BuyingTrip... ...LOTS OF NEW INVENTORY!
If one were to believe the constant negative press, it would be hard to believe that any domestic car dealership would be growing in this market. But just like its sister stores in Summit Automotive, Summit Ford conveniently located on Route 5 in Elbridge, just two miles west of Camillus, continues to grow. Owner Tom Kristoff said, “We have always thought our Ford store was in a good location to serve the west side communities of Fairmont, Camillus, Skaneateles, Auburn and Baldwinsville. With the recent closing of Dealmaker Ford in Clay we will work to service that area as well.” Summit brings big city selection combined with small town caring and personal attention. “We welcome all Ford customers who are looking for a Ford dealership they know they can count on for the long haul to provide them with the best in sales and service both today and in the future,” Kristoff said. Summit has demonstrated unusual strength in this market by growing their Ford stores retail sales in both new and used in 2008 by 4 percent versus 2007 and was the number one retail sales Ford store in the Syracuse market. “We have and will continue to work hard to demonstrate to our customers and the community at large that Summit is a good place to do business,” Kristoff said. “People can be assured that we

“With the economy the way it is, customers will benefit from maintaining the vehicles they have rather than dealing with the expense of buying a new one,” said Cathy. Hudson & Mowins makes it convenient to maintain a vehicle. Greg and Cathy also remind their customers that they can keep up a vehicle’s warranty without returning to the dealership for service. The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act states that owners can choose which service shop maintains their warranty. The staff at Hudson & Mowins hopes people will visit them for both routine maintenance and to keep up their warranties. Hudson & Mowins has been a AAA-Approved center for 50 years, and has won the AAA Top Shop Award for seven years running. Under AAA’s program, Hudson & Mowins is held to high standards, all of which the shop meets or exceeds. The shop has also been a Napa AutoCare Center for 18 years. Napa requires that all of its centers be highly reputable and qualified to make quality repairs. The technicians at Hudson & Mowins are outstanding; three are Master Technicians, which means they are qualified in every possible

and the Napa Ad Council to help raise money for autism awareness. A donation box and informative pamphlets have been placed in the reception area, and so far the effort has been a success. The Hudsons have raised money by having people make donations in place of paying for some repairs. “If a customer comes in with a flat tire, for example, we will tell them to donate the cost of the repair instead of charging them. Yes, it
cuts down on the money we make, but it is such a worthwhile cause,” said Cathy. She said that with the participation of several Napa service centers, a lot of money is being raised for autism research. Hudson & Mowins is located at 62 E. Genesee St. in Baldwinsville. To contact them, call 635-5681 or visithudsonandmowins.com. They look forward to seeing new customers in 2009.

emotion.” The production of Romeo & Juliet will mark the maestro’s Syracuse Opera conducting debut as well as debuts from four talented young singers, including soprano Amanda Pabyan (Metropolitan Opera) as Juliet and tenor Scott Ramsay (Lyric Opera of Chicago) as Romeo. These artists have more to offer audiences than just their “pretty voices” as they are each committed to the honest interpretation of character. The Opera’s production of Mark Adamo’s Little Women features what Kinney Frost deems “a dream cast,” and marks the return of Marc Schreiner, who starred in last season’s production of Rigoletto. The composition of Little Women itself is unlike other 20th century operas in that it
pays tribute to musical practices that have preceded it. The conductor describes Adamo’s work as “a perfect blend of tradition and innovation. Audiences are sure to leave the auditorium humming these soaring melodies.” When Douglas Kinney Frost joined the Syracuse Opera staff just over a year and a half ago, the community of Upstate New York was blessed with a marvelous musical gift. Stay tuned for more artistic innovation and community involvement from this committed musician. See Kinney Frost conduct Romeo & Juliet March 6 and 8 and Little Women May 1 and 3. The techs at Hudson & Mowins regularly attend training sessions to make sure they have the skills to service the array of new vehicles on the market. The staff is friendly and helpful, and the mechanics speak directly to customers about the work to be done. The close contact between customers and technicians is very important to the staff at Hudson & Mowins. hance the musical life of Upstate New York by working with General & Artistic Director Catherine Wolff to bring creative, innovative mainstage programming to Syracuse. The two operas scheduled for the first half of 2009, Romeo & Juliet in March, and Little Women in May, illustrate this goal. The first opera, Shakespeare’s famous romantic tragedy, set flawlessly to music by French composer Charles Gounod, is one of the conductor’s favorites. Kinney Frost describes the production as, “bringing together everything people love about opera: incredible choruses, demanding solo roles, and multifaceted drama; the singing is impassioned and expresses real human
