Brandon Reed, a freshman at Durgee Junior High, shoots a T-shirt into the crowd during the Oct. 1 Baldwinsville Bees football game at PelcherArcaro Stadium, as Joe Burchill supervises. The T-shirt is part of a local campaign “Stay Alive – Don’t Text and Drive - to end teenage texting and driving.
Campaign encourages teens to forgo texting in car By Katrina Koerting Hundreds of cars in the community have been turned into “no phone zonesâ€? with the Hills, Farnham & Hills Insurance agency’s new pledge campaign against cell phone use while driving. “By signing a pledge, it brings the issue to the forefront of your attention,â€? said Angela Strodel, a licensed agent at the agency. “It’s a personal commitment and most people, when they make a pledge, they like to keep it.â€? The “Arrive Alive, Don’t txt n drvâ€? campaign asks licensed drivers to sign a pledge to make the car a “no phone zoneâ€? by not using the phone while driving and encouraging other drivers to do the same. It is also bringing awareness to the issue by shooting T-shirts into the crowd and having a table at the Baldwinsville home football games, giving out decals and sending follow-up emails to people that sign the pledge, said Strodel. The insurance group will be at the homecoming game on Oct. 15, where they will continue to shoot shirts into the crowd, have a table where people can sign the pledge and get information on the issue. They hand out statistics, which come from their research online, said Strodel. Some of the statistics are: • 6,000 people were killed and half a million were injured in cell-phone related accidents in 2008 • The average teen sends 2,899 texts a month • Cell phones cause nearly 30 percent of all car
accidents • Texting while driving is six times more likely to cause an accident than drunk driving • Texting while driving makes a teen’s reaction time as slow as a 70-year-old’s reaction The insurance agency also created a web site, donttxtndrv.com, where people can learn more about the pledge and information about cell phone use while driving. “It’s really a community effort,â€? said Strodel. “It’s a growing problem for kids. Since we are an agency in the community, we wanted to get the word out.â€? The agency is encouraging parents to take the pledge and to watch the informational video on the website with their kids so that they can discuss the dangers together, she said. The pledge campaign began in early September and planning began over the summer, said Strodel. Hills, Farnham & Hills partnered with Safe-co who contributed about $1,500 to help finance the campaign. The money has been put toward T-shirts, posters, decals, letterhead and other things the group is using to get the message out, said Strodel. The campaign was started because of the growing awareness of the problem in the news and because most of the workers of the insurance agency have kids that are around 16. There was not a specific event that caused it, said Strodel. See Texting, page 9

BVC receives donation By Erin Wisneski
ewisneski@cnylink.com
Oldies were blasting from Nobles Plaza this past summer during an Aug. 15 car show hosted by Dream Machines, a Baldwinsville car club, and fellow car enthusiasts, the GM Kruzzers car club. The Baldwinsville Volunteer Center was the beneficiary of all proceeds raised at the event, which totaled $400. Members of Dream Machines and GM Kruzzers recently presented the center with the donation. “The volunteer center is so appreciative of these car clubs that remember us each year, said Nancy Conley, executive director of the center. Conley also had the honor of presenting the Judge’s Choice award, which Eric Granholm of Camillus won with his 1934 Chevy Coupe. It was one of many awards bestowed upon car owners at the show. “It was beautiful – a metallic purple with black specks, Conley said of the ’34 coupe. Approximately 40 cars registered, however only about 20 showed because of the weather. “If it’s raining, they just don’t want to bring their cars out, Conley said. Last year, the Baldwinsville Volunteer Center coordinated assistance for the family of a GM Kruzzers member, whose son was battling cancer. The donation was the car clubs’ way of giving back to the center. “The center really went above and beyond what they offered to the families, said Paul Grace, a fellow GM Kruzzers member.
Eric Granholm of Camillus accepts the Baldwinsville Volunteer Center Judge’s Choice trophy from Nancy Conley, BVC’s director.

Your community, your news, your website This week, Eagle Newspapers is launching a new and improved network of websites, with one especially tailored for your community. Baldwinsville Messenger has a new home at baldwinsvillemessenger.com. Eagle has created a website for each of its seven local publications. “By creating separate sites for each of our newspapers, rather than one large site, which aggregates the content from all of our products, we have refocused the attention on the individual communities we serve,” said Publisher David Tyler. “We’re making it easier for our web users to find news and content that is local and useful to them.” At our new websites, you will find breaking news stories throughout the week, as well as school and business news and upcoming events. Stories, letters to the editor, obituaries and more can be submitted with our online forms. “The new website will allow us to update our readers on all the local news that is important to the communities we cover,” said Managing Editor Jennifer Wing. “The new, user-friendly format will make it even easier for readers to read all the news about sports, schools, businesses, people and organizations in their neighborhoods.” Reading something online doesn’t offer the same tactile feeling as sitting down with a newspaper, and we don’t think that will change. But our websites offer a new way for you to interact with your community paper, and to stay up-to-date with the latest news. Want to keep up with communities across Central New York? Visit any of our other six websites: cazenoviarepublican.com, eaglebulletin.com, eagle-observer.com, eaglestarreview.com, skaneatelespress. com and theeaglecny.com. We’ll be seeing you soon!

A closer look at the county budget For the past two weeks, I have met with my colleagues daily to comb through this proposed budget in an effort to downsize government. Despite the fact that there are mandates from the state and federal government that are unavoidable, there still are local dollar funded departments that, in my opinion, are operating in excess. My promise to taxpayers when I took office was that I would work diligently to eliminate excessive spending and reduce the size of government. Now that we are through the Ways & Means report, I would like to highlight some of the accomplishments. In an effort to reduce taxes, severe cuts needed to be made. I would like to note that every department head was asked to take a closer look at their proposed budgets and find additional savings. We no longer can provide every service and program that we currently do. The property taxpayers have been burdened far too long. To set an example, the County Legislature reduced our own staff from 10 to seven positions. Additionally, the Legislature has voted to remove our raises and this November voters will be given the opportunity to reduce the Legislature by two members – an initiative that was supported by the entire Legislature in July of this year. As previously mentioned, spending needed to be reduced in many county departments. For example, the Sheriff ’s department’s budget has almost doubled over the past 10 years. While the public’s safety is of the utmost importance, it is clear that we have too many layers serving the same constituency. With that said, in the 2010 proposed budget, the Sheriff ’s office had more than 50 criminal investigators for 132 road patrol officers. That provides
for at least one full-time investigator for every two to three road patrol officers. If you compare the county to other agencies, many have one investigator for every 10 road patrol officers. We eliminated nine positions in the criminal investigation unit. Originally, the Sheriff ’s office had asked for more than 20 new vehicles. This item was removed from the budget saving over $500,000. This is not the year to be investing in new cars; we need to maintain the fleet we have. Finally, the Legislature has asked the Sheriff ’s department to take a serious look at Air One. The craft itself is worth close to $2,000,000 dollars with all of its equipment and is costing tax payers around $500,000 a year to operate. The State police have a helicopter that is based out of Hancock field that could provide search and rescue services. For medical transportation, there is a private medical services helicopter that is based out of Marcellus, which would perform this task. The bottom line is the services are already being provided to this area, Air One has been most beneficial to surrounding counties – a service that their taxpayers are NOT contributing to. In 2009, Air One was used a total of 24 times for medical transport. Of those 24 times, 17 were for transports from surrounding counties. The legislature feels that the county should still be operating on
an austerity budget. Most departments were asked to reduce their funding requests for supplies, materials and equipment to the numbers used in 2009. The comptroller’s office has completed an analysis and feels that each department is sustainable at the 2009 levels. The Ways & Means committee, moreover, recommended the use of $12,000,000 of monies from the general fund balance. After using $12,000,000 in this budget to reduce the tax increase, there still will be a balance of over $50 million dollars. Last year, the Legislature resorted to using close to $8,000,000 from the fund balance and, as of the third quarter, we had replenished most of that amount. While I would have encouraged the use of more fund balance funds, we must be careful not to spread ourselves too thin, jeopardizing our stellar bond rating that allows us to borrow funds at very low interest rates. The Ways & Means committee’s report found more than $45 million dollars in excess spending or overly conservative projected revenues. I know each department is being asked to do more with less, which can be very challenging, but these are trying times. I have every confidence in our department leadership to make this budget work, and find even more efficiencies. The legislature is responsible to the taxpayers, first and foremost. It would have been irresponsible to deliver a budget that doubled or tripled the county tax rate. The taxpayer can not sustain government at its present size. Rich Lesniak represents the first district, which includes the town of Lysander and the western portion of Clay. Rich welcomes constituent feedback; he can be contacted at 638-8373.
From the mailbag Walk for the Woods a success To the editor: I participated in Canton Woods first annual Walk for the Woods fundraiser this past Saturday and what a great event it was. It was so well organized by Ruth Troy, Joan Ferstler and a cast of others. We all had a great time, and some of us even brought our dogs. Refreshments were served as we raised money for the senior center. Let the community get involved and join us in the future. Great job everyone. GEORGE LAURANGE BALDWINSVILLE
Happy 50th birthday mom To the editor: Happy 50th birthday mom – you never looked better or happier than you do now and you deserve it. We are so proud of all you have overcome and accomplished when others would have quit. You continue to amaze us with your endless love and support of so many less fortunate. You believe in others even when
they have given up. You spend so much of your time, monies and energy giving back to others, being Mrs. Clause at Christmas, the Easter Bunny and God knows way too many motorcycle rides to benefit others to count. We are so very lucky and proud to have a mom and friend like you. Continue to be that free spirit and compassionate care giver you are. We are so glad to see you so alive for your 50th birthday. Because of your love and encouragement, we too hop to fill your shoes and may you never stop smiling. We love you so much. CHAD AND BUFFY CURTIS BALDWINSVILLE
Thank you Mr. Mercer To the editor: My family and I would like to thank [Mr. William Mercer] for expressing so eloquently our concerns regarding the running of the Oktoberfest road race through the Riverview Cemetery. Once we became aware of the race route, we
contacted the Oktoberfest committee. We were told the route had just been certified and changes could not be made, but were assured that the race participants would be respectful of the cemetery and our concerns would be taken into consideration in the future. By Kelly Cary, BCSD To promote a healthy lifestyle, Baker High School held its second annual Wellness Day Sept. 24. The school devoted the whole morning to health and wellness activities. All of the high school’s students had the opportunity to participate in a variety of healthy activities including hip-hop dance, yoga, handball, kickball and even a healthy cooking class. Activities were held throughout the building and on the district’s main campus. Baker’s Wellness Day also promoted the district’s wellness policy. In 2006, the Baldwinsville Central School District adopted its wellness policy, which emphasizes creating and maintaining a learning environment that models and encourages healthy eating and physical activity habits. The entire policy is on the district’s web site at bville.org, under District Information.

concert benefits local food pantry Sta reports
(From left) Rush Pond, Janne Murphy, Liz Bowers and Mary Hamilton promote the First Presbyterian Church’s harvest ham dinner to be held Saturday Oct. 16.
Harvest Ham Dinner By Liz Bower The first Presbyterian Church harvest ham dinner is a long standing tradition. For many years, a public fall dinner had been held by members of the church, but there was no specific menu. In 1977, upon the request of the women of the church, church member Elma Fisher (well-known cook and home economics teacher) was asked to devise an annual dinner plan to include dining room set up and dĂŠcor. That tradition has been followed faithfully since that time. The people preparing and serving the meal change, but the basic
“We’re a local agency, said Joe Burchill, a licensed agent at the agency. “Everyone lives and works in Baldwinsville. It’s our way to give back. The agency is also donating $1 to the Baldwinsville scholarship program for each person that signs the pledge, he said. So far, about 300 people have taken the pledge. There is a mix between adults and students that have signed the pledge, said Burchill. “I’ve seen some adults not be willing to take the pledge, which is scary, he said. “The students seem open to it. The response is pretty good. The agency is still planning what they will do to spread the word once the football games are over. The schools may also be taking the campaign into the classroom by having the students design graphics for the campaign or have the students take a class about the dangers of phone use before they can get a parking pass, said Burchill. While Burchill said most people had signed the pledge earlier in the season, there were still community members and students

meet the candidates The Van Buren Republican Committee invites everyone, republican, democrat or independent, to a Meet Our Candidates forum held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday Oct. 21 at the Canton Woods Senior Center, 76 Canton St. in the village. Candidates attending include Ann Marie Buerkle, candidate for US Congress, Sen. John DeFrancisco, Rick Guy, candidate for state Assembly and Sheri Kevin Walsh. Participants are encouraged to ask questions and voice their concerns. Light refreshments will be served.
From page 1 signing the pledge at the Oct. 1 game. Taylor Pastore, 16, said she signed the pledge because she knew the importance of not texting and driving. “You really need all of your attention on the road,â€? she said. Claire Monnat, 17, agreed. “I think there are enough distractions on the road as it is,â€? she said. “You don’t need to add more.â€? This is not the first time Pastore and Monnat had signed a pledge like this or heard about the dangers associated with texting and driving. They said they signed Oprah’s pledge against texting and driving last year. They also learned about the dangers of using their phones when they took driver’s education before getting their licenses, they said. Maggie Monnat, 17, said she would encourage others to sign the pledge too. She said, “Other people should take the pledge because if you’re texting and driving, you’re putting not only yourself, but others at risk too.â€? Hillview Community Church Coffeehouse presents Rusty Leyden in concert to benefit the Baldwinsville Food Pantry at 7 p.m. Saturday Oct. 16. Though Wiacek had 10 saves, B’ville did break through once in each half, as Lynch and Varga proved responsible for the two goals and Corso earned an assist. Led by Nicole Piontkowski and Emily Brissenden, B’ville’s defense held CNS to just two shots. That whole question of adversity cropped up again Saturday, after the Bees went to Vestal (Section IV) and took a 1-0 loss to the Golden Bears. Despite dominating the flow of play, taking 14 shots to Vestal’s three, B’ville could not get on the board, and a second-half goal by Emily Disenza allowed the Golden Bears to prevail. Thus, both of the Bees’ defeats have come on turf fields. After B’ville hosts Auburn on Tuesday, it makes a trip Thursday night to Liverpool – another turf field, just like RFA and Vestal, so that the Bees could apply what it learned in those losses, and try to turn it around.

place Watertown around last Monday afternoon, and the angry Bees proceeded to throttle the Cyclones by an astonishing 16-0 margin. Before it was done, B’ville had taken 53 shots, and three different players had hat tricks. Lindsay Varga led with four goals, while Paige McKenna and Natalie Lynch earned three goals apiece. Behind them, Paige Corso found the net twice, while Sierra Earle, Meghan Cuddy, Kayla Dubiel and Nicole Bourdon settled for single goals. Much more of a test was expected Wednesday, when B’ville came back to artificial turf (just like the RFA loss) and met CiceroNorth Syracuse at Bragman Stadium. Sure enough, it was close – but the Bees made it through, beating the Northstars 2-0 as it got used to the turf, then started to take a barrage of shots at CNS goalie Meghan Wiacek.

B’ville golfers compete in sectional tournament By Phil Blackwell
pblackwell@cnylink.com
An outstanding fall put together by the Baldwinsville boys golf team would culminate in a pair of highprofile events. First, the Bees took on Fayetteville-Manlius last Monday at Radisson Greens. On a course where it had not lost all season, B’ville finally took a blemish, falling to the Hornets 197-203. Luke Ciulla, with a ninehole score of 35 (one under par), had the top individual score by three shots over F-M’s Ryan Fero. But Fero’s teammates, Sean Wildhack and Kevin Ralph, each
shot 39 in front of Brendan Polsin’s 40, giving the Hornets the depth it needed to prevail. Then the Bees went to Green Lakes State Park for Thursday’s Section III Class AA tournament, where it landed in fifth place with a score of 420. West Genesee edged F-M for the title based on a tie-breaker after both finished at 393. Most of the Bees had some difficulty with the Green Lakes course – but Ciulla and Dan Wright both shot 81 and qualified for the overall Section III tournament, to be held late in the spring of 2011 at Colgate University’s Seven Oaks course.

Bees go to 6-0, set up CBA showdown By Phil Blackwell
pblackwell@cnylink.com
All is now in place for what is sure to be one of the most anticipated home games in the Baldwinsville football program’s 101-year history. The Bees, now 6-0 following Friday night’s 43-20 victory over Cicero-North Syracuse, will host Christian Brothers Academy, also 6-0, next Friday at Pelcher-Arcaro Stadium for the Class AA-1 division regular-season championship. Twice, B’ville met CBA in 2009, prevailing both times - first in a memorable September shootout at Alibrandi Stadium, then again in the Section III Class AA final in the Carrier Dome, when it rallied from a halftime deficit to prevail 30-12. Now they go at it again, and the Bees are quite confident following its trip east on Route 31 to Bragman Stadium, where it added to the woes of a CNS squad already at 1-4 and falling out of playoff contention. In yet another routine
display of his young brilliance, sophomore tailback Tyler Rouse piled up 297 yards on the ground as the line of Matt Moreland, Nick Robinson, Jake Margrey, Joe Tanguay and Ryland Jennings pushed the Northstar defensive line around. Yet it was the Bees’ underrated passing game that struck for the only points of the first quarter. From the CNS 26, Casey Colligan dropped back, threw to the end zone - and found Augie Zona for the touchdown. That just proved as the appetizer, though, for a second-quarter feast where B’ville would amass 28 points and pull clear from the Northstars. Rouse, scoring on a 14-yard run, made it 13-0, but it was after CNS got on the board with Corey Scanlon’s five-yard TD run that the fun really began. On B’ville’s next possession, Rouse, taking a handoff on his own 34, found a seam and used his deceptive speed to go 66 yards to the other end zone. Minutes later, it was pure power as Rouse broke several tackles on a 41-yard TD run that expanded the
lead to 27-7. And just before halftime, Colligan hit a wide-open Zona again in the end zone, the scoring pass covering 21 yards as the Bees strolled into halftime with a 34-7 edge. The second half proved a kicking showcase for Stanard. Three different times, B’ville scoring drives stalled near the end zone, but Stanard salvaged them with successful field goals of 20, 37 and 25 yards, as the Bees withstood a pair of late CNS touchdowns to earn its 17th win in the last 18 games. All this leads to CBA, who kept itself unbeaten Friday with a hard-fought 14-7 win at Rome Free Academy. Possessing a stellar defense and a proven senior quarterback in Tyler Hamblin, the Brothers are bent on atoning for how the Bees treated them a season ago.
Pat Duffy
GOOD CATCH: Baldwinsville wide receiver Augie Zona (16) grabs one of his two touchdown receptions in last Friday’s 43-20 victory over Cicero-North Syracuse. Emotions already run high on Senior Night, but
the massive stakes of this league title game between
B’ville and CBA only add to the theater.
Thompson beats F-M runners Back on the course after missing the first part of the 2010 season, Baldwinsville boys cross country runner Shaun Thompson is not letting anyone get in front of him. Even defending state Class AA champion Fayetteville-Manlius could not put any of its top-flight performers in front of Thompson during last Wednesday’s head-to-head meet, as the B’ville senior won on his home course. Gradually, Thompson got away from the Hornets’ tandem of Andrew Roache and Mark McGurrin, as he crossed the finish line in 15 minutes, 54 seconds. Roache was second in 16:02 and
McGurrin (16:03) settled for third place. Another Bees runner, Alec Peinkofer, ran well as he took fourth place in 16:04. Despite this, B’ville still lost 23-38 to the Hornets, who owned the rest of the top 10 spots. It proved even tougher for the B’ville girls team as F-M, the reigning three-time national champions, beat them 15-50, its top runners staying together as a group to pull away from the Bees. When B’ville traveled to Saturday’s Manhattan Invitational at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, Thompson did not run with the boys team, but it still had some solid results in the Varsity F race. B’ville girls soccer moves to 11-0 By Phil Blackwell

since 1972
Once its Fall Festival Tournament was complete, the Baldwinsville girls volleyball team went back to the routine of dismantling anyone that stepped on the court with them – and in the process, bringing head coach Mary Jo Cerqua close to a significant milestone. When the Bees swept Fayetteville-Manlius 25-14, 25-19, 25-5 on Friday night, it gave Cerqua her 399th career victory in 21 seasons at the helm. Win no. 400 could arrive Wednesday night, when B’ville visits Oswego. The F-M match typified B’ville’s domination, done under Cerqua’s watch, for the last two decades, in that it featured fast and accurate serves, strong defense and power at the net. Brianna Stewart and Emily Walser each finished with four aces, with Stewart adding six assists. Sarah Klaben got four kills as Allegra Bell and Paulina Rein produced three kills apiece. Everyone got to play in last Monday night’s match against Corcoran, where the Bees won the first game 25-6, then got the next two games by closer margins of 25-20 and 25-17. Shannon Albright
worked hard on the back line, gaining 21 assists as Stewart (eight assists) got to rest for large portions of the match. Bell dominated near the net, putting away 15 kills, while Klaben gained six kills. Erica Miller and Liz Giromini each got four kills as Rein threw in four aces, three kills, three assists and three digs. The Bees then went to Utica Proctor Wednesday night and ripped the Raiders 25-10, 25-9, 25-11. Albright again was the featured setter, improving her total to 32 assists, an average of better than 10 assists per game. Rein and Bell both finished with nine kills, while Sydnie Hamm got six kills and four digs. Klaben added five digs as Giromini had four kills and Emily Walser picked up four digs. B’ville’s boys volleyball team returned to the court Thursday night, taking charge against Liverpool as it swept the Warriors 25-9, 25-14, 25-18. Ryan Shelton finished with 28 assists, adding five aces and two kills. Dan Dubiel produced five kills and three aces. Chris Thayer, Ryan Zbikowski and Jake Toscano each had four kills, while Jarret Reaume got three kills. Zbikowski added three aces and two digs.
Lurking near the top of the state Class AA rankings, the Baldwinsville girls soccer team knew major tests still lay ahead before the crucible of the post-season – especially this Friday’s first-place CNY Counties League National division showdown with Liverpool. The Bees, who have risen to no. 2 in the state Class AA rankings, played for the first time in nearly a week last Monday night at Rome Free Academy, steadily taking out the Black Knights 5-0. Jackie Firenze proved far too much for RFA’s defenders to handle. She helped B’ville seize a 3-0 halftime lead and, by the time she was done, had two goals and two assists. Meanwhile, Emma Firenze put together one goal and one assist, with Angelica Romeu and Claire Monnat also getting goals. Maggie Monnat’s six saves secured yet another shutout.
B’ville was back home to face Utica Proctor Wednesday and again won big, routing the Raiders by an 8-1 margin as it scored four times in each half. Better yet, it was spread around, as seven different players got goals before it was done. Only Jackie Firenze found the net twice as Emma Firenze got a goal and two assists. Romeu, Erin Ward, Alexis Czyz, Alyssa Tretowicz and Claire Monnat all scored as Maggie Monnat picked up two assists. Going to Sunnycrest Park Friday night, the Bees handled Henninger 8-1 for its 11th consecutive victory, getting six of those goals in the first half to settle matters quickly. Emma Firenze backed up her two goals with an assist as Jackie Firenze and Katie Sullivan also had two-goal outings. Romeu and Lena Vecchiarelli also converted, with Amanda Ingersoll stepping up to earn a pair of assists.

Home & Garden Home Heating-Fireplaces
here’s a riddle:
What’s cozy and warm and Environmentally friendly ways to keep warm this winter
Cooler days are on the horizon. As the mercury drops, energy consumption to heat the home tends to rise. Individuals concerned about making environmentally friendly heating choices may wonder just what can be done to stay green - and save some green in the process. The average North American homeowner spends about $800 to $1000 for the winter season heating his or her home. Those who rely on natural gas tend to spend less overall than homeowners who use propane, electric or oil to fuel their furnaces. Reducing reliance on heating fuel benefits the planet and most people’s wallets. While it may not be possible to turn off the heat altogether this season, there are ways to reduce dependency by making a few changes.
Answer:
Get active.
Exercising produces internal body heat and can help people resist the temptation to turn up the thermostat. What’s more, active people are less likely to loaf around the house, where inactivity can lead to feelings of chilliness.
Lighting a fire and cuddling up with a blanket on a chilly night.
Block drafts.
Now is the time to seal any drafts around windows and doors. Caulking is a permanent fix, or weather-proof tape and plastic can be used. For those who want a little extra protection, draft “snakes” or other stuffed products can be placed on the bottom of doors to keep warm air in a room.
Bundle up.
People can don warmer clothes to wear around the house if it means being able to turn the thermostat down. Instead of trodding around the house wearing shorts
green
and going barefoot, wear slippers and sweat pants. Layering clothes enables individuals to customize clothing for feelings of comfort.
Program your thermostat.
A programmable thermostat enables homeowners to set the temperature accord-
ing to room activity. For example, the heat can be turned down when residents are out at work or sleeping.
Open the blinds, curtains.
Let the sun shine in when the sun is strong. The rays will help to heat the home naturally.
all over?
Be sure to also cut back shrubs and trees that block sunlight from entering the house.
Create a cozy atmosphere.
Light candles, the fireplace or a woodburning stove and cuddle around wearing a blanket.
Enjoy hearty foods.
Whip up plenty of stick-to-your-ribs meals, such as stews and soups. Not only will cooking warm up the house with ambient heat from the stove (Warning: Do not use the oven to heat a home), rich foods will take longer to digest, causing the body to produce more heat during digestion.

Why do windows When cooler weather arrives, homeowners often face a troublesome condition. Condensation forms on windows and can be a nuisance or even cause damage to the surrounding trim. There are
reasons why sweating windows occur. Knowing the causes is the key to fixing the situation. When air gets warm it expands and is able to absorb water. When the air cools, eventually it gets to

Warm, moist interior air meeting up with cold air from outside can cause window sweating. windows. The opposite can occur in the warmer months, when outdoor air condenses on windows because of an air-conditioned interior. There are many activities that put moisture in the air, including breathing, showering and cooking. Removing excess moisture from the home can help reduce condensation and window sweating. * Be sure that windowless bathrooms have an exhaust vent that will vent air outdoors. Bathroom doors also should have enough of a gap on the bottom of the door to let air inside the bathroom. * Gas appliances, such as fireplaces, should be

remedied. * Think about replacement windows. Insulated windows that feature double or triple panes will be more insulated, preventing the warm air in the home from meeting the cold air of outdoors. Also avoid metal window frames, as such frames tend to conduct the cold and can further exacerbate sweating issues.

Halloween Hints for tHe Home How to make your kids’ Jack-o-Lantern last longer Jack-o-lanterns are a staple of Halloween decorations. Making one last throughout the season is a trick of the trade even some veteran carvers struggle with. People young and old head to pumpkin patches to pick out the ideal pumpkins. Some prefer perfectly round ones, while others like tall, oblong ones. Whatever the decision, the majority of these pumpkins will be brought home and turned into jack-o-lanterns, or pumpkins carved with a design. The key to having a jack-o-lantern ready and prime for Halloween haunting is carving it at the right time. Carved pumpkins will not last forever, so timing it right is key. In general, carved pumpkins will last for about a week if kept in a cool place and out of direct sunlight. A pumpkin left in midday sun and heat will likely rot or mold much more quickly. For those planning on carving pumpkins for Halloween, it’s best to do so a day or two before the big day. This way the design will be crisp and fresh. There also are ways to increase the jack-o-lantern’s longevity. Some of the best methods involve inhibiting mold growth and dehydration of the pumpkin. One trick
is to submerge the cut pumpkin in a bucket of water for a few minutes after carving to moisten the flesh. Others say that spreading petroleum jelly on the inside of the car ved pumpkin will help. Comm e rc i a l c h e m i cal products that reduce the decay of the pumpkin may be effective as well. One can also try using a bleachand-water solution to keep mold from growing. Those who will simply allow nature to take its course should keep the pumpkin as cool as possible and remove as much of the flesh from the inside when carving. However, because no method is foolproof, the jack-o-lantern will most likely not make it more than a week, unless the goal is to discover new strains of mold growth. For those who want a permanently ghoulish jacko-lantern, it’s best to purchase a plastic or ceramic variety instead.
Deck the halls for Halloween, too!
A big part of the fun of Halloween is decorating for this festive season of ghouls and goblins. About one in 20 school-aged children is affected by “developmental coordination disorder (DCD), which is characterized by difficulty with fine and gross motor skills. Those with DCD may have problems performing daily activities including personal care, sports/recreation, and school skills such as handwriting. In the past, DCD has been regarded as something of a secondary disorder that did not wrrant much concern. However, more recently, this attitude has been changing. One finding that has health experts concerned is that a recent study has found that children with DCD are more than three times more likely than typical children to be overweight and at increased risk of obesity. Physical therapy may help children who have been diagnosed with the disorder.
EXbXc db Pc fff U[hR]h R^\
Children and adolescents with DCD should not be confused with those who do not perform motor skills as well as their peers. Rather, children and adolescents with DCD have extreme difficulty acquiring new motor skills. Practice can help them, but it must be structured in specific ways to be effective. If you or a family member needs physical therapy, please call our clinic at 315-476-3176 to schedule an appointment. We are proud to offer highly trained and experienced professionals to serve you. Our office is located at 207 Pine Street in Syracuse. p.s. Experts believe that the poorer coordination associated with “developmental coordination disorder (DCD) may result in reduced physical activity, which, in turn, brings on unhealthy weight gain.
