Every factor, it seemed, was working for the Baldwinsville football team last Friday night as it squared off with Christian Brothers Academy with the Class AA-1 division title on the line. No way, the prevailing logic went, could the Brothers beat the Bees. Not at Pelcher-Arcaro Stadium. Not on a grass field churned into pudding by a day full of rain, with gusty winds blowing up to 25 miles per hour to add to the difficulty. And not against a Bees squad that was no. 3 in the state Class AA rankings, had knocked off its last 17 Section III foes and featured the most imposing ground game and offensive line in Central New York. Yet when the game was done and the clock hit zero, it was the guys in white, purple, gold and brown (from all the mud) celebrating a 14-10 victory over B’ville, and it was the home team in red trudging off in

NOT MUCH ROOM: Baldwinsville running back Tyler Rouse (32) finds some rare daylight in last Friday’s game against CBA. Rouse, hampered by the muddy conditions, only had 82 yards on 30 carries in the Bees’ 14-10 loss to the Brothers. disappointment. Of all the titles claimed by CBA in head coach Joe Casamento’s 11-year tenure (which has included

106 wins and a boatload of sectional championships, plus a state crown in 2004), this might be the most exceptional because it was so

unexpected. Other than senior quarterback Tyler Hamblin and a handful of other starters, the Brothers did not have a

lot of experienced players on hand when the 2010 season got underway. And even when the wins started See Football, page 11

State changes assessment program By Erin Wisneski

ewisneski@cnylink.com

New York State has done away with its Annual Reassessment Program (ARP), which required participating municipalities to keep assessment rolls at 100 percent and in return paid $5 per year per parcel. The program has been replaced with the Aid for Cyclical Reassessments (ACR) program, which pays $5 per parcel in appraisal years and $2 per parcel in non-appraisal years. With just under 15,000 properties in the towns of Lysander and Van Buren, which entered the ARP in 1999 and 2000 (respectively), the change equates to an approximate $90,000 reduction in aid every four years. Additionally, the two towns entered into a coordinated assessment program (CAP) in 2009

receiving $7 per parcel aid payment to keep all homes within the towns at full assessment. The CAP has to remain in place for 10 years (through 2018). If assessment values are not kept updated, the towns would have to repay a prorated amount of the aid. “[The towns] will have to pay money back on top of getting less aid if they don’t participate, said Theresa Golden, the assessor for both towns. Besides the reduction in aid, the biggest difference between the ARP and ACR is the new program requires municipal assessors to devise a plan to keep assessments at market value in future years. Municipalities have to submit a four-year plan at the minimum with reappraisals conducted at least once every four years. Both Lysander and Van Buren properties were at 100 percent assessment in 2010, which will be considered the first

year of the program should the towns decide to participate. Golden would have to reassess all properties in year five, or 2014. While Golden said the change probably wouldn’t have a huge impact on residents, she said the ACR would take a lot more planning. “In year five, we may need additional assistance, she added. If Van Buren and Lysander decide to participate in the program, Golden would have to submit a plan and aid application by Dec. 6 to get aid for 2010. Golden said she thought both boards would decide to enter into the new program. “My feeling is they will try a five-year plan starting in 2010 through 2014, she said. Both towns have until the first week in December to decide.

A good week to think about retirement savings You may not see it posted on your calendar, but this is National Save for Retirement Week. This annual event, endorsed by Congress, is designed to raise awareness about the importance of saving for retirement — so why not take some time this week to review your own strategy for achieving the retirement lifestyle you’ve envisioned? Of course, you may wonder why we even need a National Save for Retirement Week. Unfortunately, it seems many Americans are not doing a good job of saving and planning for their retirement years. Consider these figures, taken from the Employee Benefit Research Institute’s 2010 Retirement Confidence Survey: • Just 16 percent of survey respondents say they are very confident about having enough money for a comfortable retirement. • 54 percent of respondents say the total value of their household’s savings and investments, excluding the value of their primary home and any defined benefit plans (i.e., traditional pension plans), is less than $25,000. • Less than half of the respondents say they and/or their spouse have tried to calculate how much money they will need for a comfortable retirement. These are obviously troubling statistics — and they indicate that

Kevin Wall Financial Focus most of us probably need to put more thought and effort into our retirement savings. What can you do? Here are a few suggestions: • Determine how much you’ll need in retirement. Try to define the lifestyle you want during retirement. Will you travel the world or stay close to home? Will you work parttime or spend your hours volunteering or pursuing hobbies? Once you know what your retirement might look like, try to estimate how much it might cost. • Identify your sources of retirement income. Take into account your IRA, 401(k) or other employersponsored retirement plan, Social Security and other savings and investments. How much income will they provide? How much can you withdraw from these vehicles each year without depleting them? • Calculate any retirement shortfall. Try to determine if your savings and investments will be enough to provide you with an income stream that’s adequate to meet your retirement needs. If it isn’t, develop an

estimate of the size of the shortfall. • Take steps to close any savings “gap.” If it doesn’t look like you’ll have enough to meet your retirement needs, you’ll have to adjust your savings and investment strategy. You may have to contribute more to your IRA, 401(k) and other retirement accounts, adjust your investment mix to provide more potential growth — or consider taking both of these steps. • Monitor your progress. Once you’ve put your investment strategy into place, you’ll need to monitor your progress to help ensure you’re on track toward achieving your retirement savings goals. Along the way, you may have to make adjustments in response to changes in the markets, your objectives or your family situation. Taking these types of action can be challenging, so you may want to work with a professional financial advisor who has the experience and resources necessary to help you identify and pursue your retirement goals. In any case, though, take action soon — and National Save for Retirement Week is a great time to start. Kevin Wall is an Edward Jones Financial Advisor serving the Greater Baldwinsville community from his office at 15 E. Genesee St., Suite 250 in Baldwinsville. From the mailbag Thank school board members To the editor: Governor David Paterson has proclaimed Oct. 25 to 29 as School Board Recognition Week in honor of the many people in New York State who serve their communities and school districts as board of education members. In Baldwinsville, 10 people serve on the Board of Education of the Baldwinsville Central School District. The Baldwinsville Central School District would like to say thank you to: Victor Jenkins, president; Burrill Wells, vice president; Cynthia Cronin; Kenneth Dwyer; James Goulet; Colin Kahl; Mark Manning; Joan Reeves; Steven Schweitzer; and Elizabeth Ventura. These men and

women of various backgrounds and different professions share a common trait - the desire to contribute their time and talents, with no monetary compensation, to ensure that the best interests of Baldwinsville’s students are served. This is no small task, considering that almost 6,000 students attend the eight schools of the district, which is the third-largest suburban public school system in Onondaga County. The members of the board of education take care of today’s business while planning for the future needs of Baldwinsville’s students. They must anticipate the needs of all students in the areas of curriculum, technology, safety and health and provide for the maintenance of district buildings, grounds and equipment. Each year, board members make the best interests

of the community their number one priority, working diligently to present a budget that maintains and improves upon the district’s quality programs, curriculum and property, while remaining fiscally responsible to tax payers. The members of the Board of Education of the Baldwinsville Central School District are your neighbors. They have a vested interest in our schools as does each community member. They strive to provide the district’s students with a superior education for the simple fact that all children deserve one. Please join me in thanking these men and women for their service to our children and to our community. JEANNE M. DANGLE SUPERINTENDENT OF BALDWINSVILLE SCHOOLS

New ballot system takes effect this fall Election season is upon us. There have been several changes to the voting process this year, starting with a new way to cast votes. The machines have changed; our state has advanced to optical scanning devices. Voters will use a paper ballot and feed the ballot into the scanning device. These scanners have replaced the old lever-style voting machines, largely because of the pesky and infamous “hanging chad” debacle, which occurred in Florida following

Will Barclay From the Assembly the Presidential election of 2000 and held up federal election results. Following this incident, federal laws were changed and the coun-

try embarked on an expansive and costly undertaking to replace the old voting machines. During the last election, many voters began to see the new machines as they were being phased in. This year, all counties will be equipped with the new optical scanners. As a result of the new machines, polling sites for many voters have changed. Counties have had to consolidate polling sites. County Executive proposed tax levy $180M, County Legislature proposed tax levy $135M The statement above says it all. At the Onondaga County Legislature’s budget session on Oct. 12, we passed a budget with a reduction in the county tax levy. What this means, in real dollars, for this area is as follows: for a $100,000 dollar home, under the Executive’s proposal, would have resulted in about a $400 dollar increase in property taxes. Under the Legislature’s proposal, the same $100,000 house would result in about $128 dollar increase. Furthermore, about $100 dollars of this increase is because the town of Lysander chose to take all of their sale tax revenues in cash this year, rather than applying it to the county credit as they have in the past. As they go through their budget process now, if the town chooses to use some of this money to apply to the town levy that would result in a rate reduction. The rest of the increase in property taxes is contributed to the states unfunded mandates that New York continues to pass on to the counties. This Legislature reduced county spending by millions. We had to prioritize spending and some things had to be cut. I would like to commend Sheriff Walsh, and his staff for meeting with the legislature to work out a plan for Air One and to save deputies’ positions. For Air One, the Sheriff will be required to set

up a not-for-profit foundation, which will accept donations to the program. Additionally, the Sheriff will seek approval from the FAA to be able to charge for medical transport flights. If these things are accomplished by July 1, Air One will continue to operate. Sheriff Walsh will pursue these avenues over the next few months and report back to the Public Safety committee. Lastly, Sheriff Walsh was able to reach the legislature’s goal of reductions, without laying-off deputies. I personally did not want to see road patrol oďŹƒcers positions reduced, but budget deficits were outrageous this year, and every option had to be explored. Another topic facing the Legislature this year was funding for some of the arts organizations. The question is should county taxpayers be supplementing the arts budgets if these organizations cannot survive on their own attendance? Last

year, the legislature re-established the Cultural Resources Trust. The Cultural Resources Trust is an organization, put in place by the Executive and the Legislature, which collects fees by acting as the “borrower for not-for-profit organizations in the community. In 2009, at the presentation of re-establishing this Trust, the comments from the Executive’s Office were that this Trust would or could offset the arts dependency on the county budget. Therefore, the Legislature has chosen to use the Trust for this purpose. We respectfully request that the Cultural Resources Trust fund these arts organizations, thereby removing this funding from the property taxpayer rolls. The last matter about this budget that has received criticism is the use of fund balance and increasing revenue projections. For the 2010 budget, the Legislature used fund balance to the tune of $8 million, and we had no problem replenishing that amount. For 2011, the Legislature authorized the use of $12 million of fund balance. That leaves a balance of over $66 million dollars! Why should we tax for money to put into our savings when we have more than enough in our savings to begin with? It doesn’t make sense and it is not good government. I would like to further defend the increasing of revenue

projections: the Executive’s proposal projected sales tax revenues at a 1.1-percent increase over last year. Currently, we have been running at about a 6-percent increase for the last three quarters. The Legislature simply believes this projection is overly conservative, so we raised the revenue projection to a still conservative 3-percent increase. I believe we could have gone higher, but under the advisement of our comptroller, it was in our best interest to not over project, so we set the sales tax projection at an amount that is attainable. This budget passed with a 15-to-3 vote. If the Executive were to veto any of the increases over her budget proposal it would then come back to the Legislature for an override vote. The Legislature would need a 2/3 majority or 13 votes to override. The point I want to leave you with is this: Any veto that is not successfully overridden will result in a tax increase. My hope is that the executive will do her best to work with this budget as adopted, and that she does not attempt to raise taxes anymore. Family and consumer sciences students at Baker High School are taking their taste buds on a tour of the United States as they learn about and prepare regional specialties from all over the country. “It’s social studies meets food, said teacher Christina Rode, as her students took homemade bagels out of the ovens in her classroom. Her classes began their tasty trip and study of regional foods, culture and history with foods from New York City including pickles they made themselves. Next on the menu? Rode will have them cooking up clam chowder before they whip up potato pancakes and pretzels from Pennsylvania Dutch Country, cheesy grits and greens from the south, and sour dough bread from the west coast over the course of the 10-week marking period.

County, the county web site features a user-friendly tool that enables voters to search their address and determine where to go to vote. This can be accessed at ntsdata.dnsalias.com/ onondagaboe/. If you’re uncertain after visiting the web site, or do not have access to the Internet, I encourage you to call your county board of elections

to verify your polling site to save yourself time and hassle on Election Day. The Oswego County Board of Elections phone number is 349-8683. Election officials in Onondaga County can be reached at 435-8683. On Election Day, here is what voters can expect: 1. Check in with an

election inspector and receive a ballot to take to a booth for privacy; 2. Fill in the oval next to a candidate’s name to cast a vote. The voter also may write in a candidate in the appropriate space; 3. Place the ballot in a privacy sleeve so that no one may see how votes were cast; and 4. The completed ballot

is fed into the scanner. If the ballot is completed correctly, the machine will signal the ballot has been cast and the paper ballot is deposited into a ballot box. If votes have been cast for multiple candidates for one office, the machine will ask the voter to get a new ballot. If not, the vote cast for too many candidates will not count.

Indoor soccer season begins The CNY Family Sports Centre Youth Soccer Fall/ Winter Indoor league will begin training Oct. 25 and games will start Oct. 30. This will be the third season of the program, which is geared towards youth soccer players at a variety of levels. “Many players want to continue to play soccer during the winter months, said CNYFSC manager and former player at Syracuse University Jeff Knittel, who heads the program. “Indoor soccer is fast, fun and can help players improve their overall game. The program accepts individual or group registrations. Age groups range from U6 to U15 boys and girls. “We see a lot of the players transition from the outdoor youth soccer organizations such as Baldwinsville Youth Soccer Association (BYSA) and play CNYFSC Youth Soccer during fall, winter and spring months, Knittel said. “We will take

individuals and place them onto teams. Players are also beginning to sign up as groups if they have friends in the program. The first session consists of nine games and 13 training sessions. United States Soccer Federation (USSF) licensed professional coaches, as well as many standout college and high school players, will coach the players. Game information The CNYFSC Youth Soccer games are played every Saturday beginning Oct. 30. Each player will play nine games with the season ending Jan. 22 and playoffs beginning Jan. 29. The games will kick-off anytime from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and each game is 50 minutes long consisting of two 25-minute halves. The center will provide each individual with a CNYFSC Youth Soccer jersey and players will be placed on a team coached by a member of the staff or a volunteer parent (parents are encouraged to volun-

As player development is the number one priority, games will be used as another training tool to help each player maximize his/her potential. “We believe at this level players should get an opportunity to play equally and learn in an enjoyable environment, Knittel said. CNY to celebrate HOPE By Chelsea Mary Holmes

On Sept. 15, 2005, Kim Bermel’s husband died by suicide and her life ended as she knew it. When she finally found HOPE for Bereaved ďŹ ve months later, her life began again. “My husband committed suicide. It was pretty unexpected,â€? Bermel said. “Even though I should have known what to do and how to feel, I really did not have any idea of how I was supposed to live, so I had to try and ďŹ gure out how I was going to get through.â€? Bermel went on the Internet and found HOPE for Bereaved, a not-for-proďŹ t organization dedicated to

serving grieving children, adults and families through counseling, support groups and an array of services, free of charge. Over the past year, it has served more than 10,000 people on their journey from grief to hope. “It was an amazing thing to be in a room with other people who were suicide survivors, because it sets you apart from the rest of the world, it truly does, she said. “And being in that room at HOPE was the most peaceful and safe place to be. This year, HOPE will be celebrating 32 years in Central New York with its annual fundraiser, “Cel-

The event provides a way for people to come together to keep the memories of loved ones who have passed on alive. The event includes dinner, music, live and silent auctions. There will be more than 250 items on which to bid including dinner, golf and service certiďŹ cates, art, sports equipment, unique furnishings, antiques, jewelry, dolls, toys and more. “This is our major fundraiser every year,â€? said Therese Schoeneck, founder of HOPE for Bereaved. “We do not charge the bereaved for our core ser-

aldwinsville Youth Soccer Association BYSA) has helped thousands of local players get their start in soccer over the past 16 years. Now BYSA’s reach goes far beyond Baldwinsville – half way around the world to Zimbabwe in southern Africa. This summer, BYSA teamed up with Liverpool’s St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and its “Walking with Makuva program to provide soccer equipment to the children of Makuva Parish, a small, poor parish in rural Zimbabwe. BYSA sent full uniform kits, soccer balls and pumps. Since soccer balls especially are at a scarce and expensive in Zimbabwe, the children treasure them. After receiving all the equipment, one child could be seen falling asleep holding a ball, while the look on an older boy’s face said it all, “Let’s get outside and play. Seven years ago, St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Liverpool created “Walking with Makuva to provide needed funds and supplies to Makuva Parish, a small, poor parish in rural Zimbabwe. A little bit goes a long way in Zimbabwe. “We can pay a primary school child’s tuition for an entire school year, which in Zimbabwe consists of three terms for $15, said Maxine Arjomand of St. Paul’s. She and member Sharon Jerge personally delivered a substantial collection of school, health supplies, children’s clothing and the soccer equipment donated by BYSA to Makuva Parish. Over the years, through fundraising events such as bake sales and sauerbraten dinners, St. Paul’s has raised enough funds for “Walking with Makuva to help Makuva’s community build a grinding mill. Donated funds have also been used to purchase school kits and, for several years, to pay school tuition for 20 AIDS orphans who otherwise would not have been able to go to school. St. Paul’s would like to be able to fund many more students to give them a chance at an education. Readers can contact Maxine at 638-3108 to make donations earmarked for Makuva Parish. BYSA is entering its 16th season of operation and is one of NY State’s largest youth soccer programs, with almost 1,000 players per year. For the fourth consecutive year, BYSA has hold online registration fees at a modest $75 per player. BYSA is proud to be doing its part to help those in need and to be a donor to “Walking with Makuva. For more information about BYSA, visit bvillesoccer.com.

Muddy battle on fourth down at the CBA six following Dave Middlemore’s interception, the Brothers took over - but Hamblin fumbled, and Bunn was forced to recover in the end zone for a safety. Minutes later, another fumble, this time inside the 10-yard line, was pounced on by Collin Twombly, and led to Colligan scoring on a one-yard sneak to make it 14-8. From there, though, the Brothers’ defense again took over. Numerous times in the second half, B’ville had the ball in CBA territory, only to leave without points. By far, the biggest stop came with 1:28 to play when, on fourth down inside the CBA 25, Pascarella sacked Colligan. Though Hamblin took an intentional safety with 18 seconds left to cut the margin to four, it did not matter as he came out on defense and intercepted Colligan’s last-ditch pass

to secure the victory - and CBA’s league title. Now, B’ville is home to face Corcoran, the thirdplace finisher in the AA-2 division, in the first round of the Class AA playoffs. Should the Bees win, it would face FayettevilleManlius or Liverpool in next weekend’s semifinals.

but had just 82 yards. Meanwhile, Hamblin deftly put together a firstquarter drive. On fourthdown-and-two from the B’ville 27-yard line, Hamblin went to the end zone and found Jack Pfohl for the game’s first touchdown. Riley Dixon’s extra point made it 7-0. Late in the second period, Magnarelli recovered a Casey Colligan fumble on the Bees’ 27. Again with a short field, Hamblin cashed in, running the last 10 yards for the score less than a minute before halftime. CBA went to the break ahead 14-0 and in a charged-up mood, ready to put the Bees away. But in the third quarter, B’ville began to push back, helped in no small part by three CBA turnovers in the most beat-up part of the field, which the Bees would use to make things close again. to pile up, points did not come at a rate comparable to other CBA teams of the past, and injuries, such as that to Cirro Nicoletti-Watson, lengthened the odds of success. CBA adjusted, though, and by the time it came to B’ville, it had two totally dependable items - Hamblin running the offense, and a ferocious defense that could shut down any opponent, even one as imposing as the Bees. Both were on display in this game, especially the defensive part. From Dan Predmore, Jonathan McGriff and Mike Magnarelli on the line, to linebackers Greg Thomson and Joey Pascarella, to defensive backs like Sam Kelley, Anthony Bunn, Dan Patane and Vince Russo, CBA never let B’ville’s star sophomore tailback, Tyler Rouse, get anything started. Corso goal pushes field hockey Bees past Liverpool By Phil Blackwell pblackwell@cnylink.com

Even though they might be careening toward another confrontation in the Section III Class A playoffs a few weeks from now, the Baldwinsville and Liverpool field hockey teams still had a chance to measure each other once more in the regular season. The two neighbors met Thursday night at LHS Stadium - and despite playing defense for much of the night, the Bees still came out on top over the Warriors, 1-0, on Paige Corso’s rebound goal late in the second half. They had first played Sept. 20, at Baldwinsville’s grass home field, with the Bees prevailing 2-0 and rarely giving Liverpool any kind of scoring opportunity. It figured to be different on the Warriors’ fast artificial surface, and the Bees, following road losses to Rome Free Academy and Vestal, needed to show it could win a tough game on a faster track.

Both teams started slowly after Liverpool’s Senior Night festivities, but the Bees were spending most of the time in its own end, forcing coach James Hanley to spend a time-out just four minutes into the contest. Gradually, B’ville got more runs, but it never took a shot in the entire half. Thus, defenders like Liz Ventura, Laura Passamnote, Nicole Piontkowski and Emily Brissenden took on a larger role, turning away the likes of Emma Lamison when they charged into the Bees’ end. And goalie Lindsay Farrell came 15 yards out of the net to make a crucial save at the 10-minute mark. So it was 0-0 at halftime, and as the second half started B’ville became more organized, even getting a handful of penalty corners, though none of them got converted. At the same time, Liverpool’s attacks were more sporadic, and it was apparent that one goal would decide matters. Just after the Warriors took a time-out with 7:24

to play, the Bees attacked and forced a penalty corner. With 6:59 left, Natalie Lynch took a hard shot from the point and, though Tess Tracy stopped it, Corso was right there to put the rebound into the cage. Liverpool fought to the last moments, getting a pair of penalty corners, but was unable to even get on shot on either of them as the clock ran out. Two days later, when the Bees visited FayettevilleManlius, it dominated the flow of play, yet still took a 1-0 loss to the Hornets. Most of the time, B’ville attacked F-M, setting itself in front of the cage and shooting away. Every time, though, Hornets goalie Abby Cunningham kicked it away, eventually gaining 25 saves for the afternoon. The Bees could not convert despite 18 penalty corners. Rarely did F-M try to counter – but it forced a penalty corner midway through the first half and, taking a feed from Tara Wellington, Kendra Napierala flung a shot past

The Baldwinsville girls swim team fell below the .500 mark on Thursday night, its record standing at 2-3 following a 52-42 loss to Fayetteville-Manlius. Though the Bees had high finishes in most of the events, it only broke through once in the early going, as Elena Margrey sped through the 50 freestyle in a top time of 27.15 seconds. Later in the meet, Amy Sidorakis earned

first place in the 100 backstroke in 1:09.70. In the 400 freestyle relay, Sidorakis, Margrey, Margaret Courtois and Kaitlyn Martin got together and earned a top time of 4:04.18. For the victorious Hornets, Hadley Cameron Carter won twice, in the 200 individual medley (2:25.69) and 500 freestyle (5:38.61), and helped her side prevail in both the 200 medley relay (1:58.98) and 200 freestyle relay (1:49.69) in quick times. B’ville has its last regular-season home meet this Thursday against Cicero-North Syracuse.

B’ville boys soccer victimized by F-M rally By Phil Blackwell

pblackwell@cnylink.com

Joe Mahr was not going to miss this time - and because he didn’t, the Fayetteville-Manlius boys soccer team likely secured the top seed for the Section III Class AA playoffs at Baldwinsville’s expense. Mahr’s goal with 2:09 to play in regulation capped a late comeback for the Hornets, ranked no. 6 in the latest state Class AA poll, as it beat the state no. 10-ranked Bees 2-1 Wednesday night in front of a large crowd at Swan Pond in Manlius. The two powers, who met in last year’s Class AA final (B’ville won, its third straight sectional crown)

had already played this season, on Sept. 4 at the Chittenango Tournament, and F-M won that time 1-0. For a long while on this night, it appeared the rematch would end the same way, but in B’ville’s favor. Early on, the Bees had a majority of the possession, probing at the Hornets’ net, but unable to convert. F-M’s best chances to get on the board all came from Mahr, as twice he had point-blank looks at the net, only to slide one shot wide and hit the other too hard and off-target to the left. So it was still 0-0 when, 1:47 before halftime, B’ville’s Adam Lauko hit a perfectly timed cross from the right side that found

Casey Murphy. Catching F-M goalie Ryan Carter out of position, Murphy poked a shot into the unoccupied net, and the Bees led 1-0, where it stayed at halftime. It got more physical early in the second half, F-M drawing a pair of yellow cards but, at the same time, keeping B’ville from adding to its lead. Still, as regulation time wound down, B’ville clung to that 1-0 lead, forcing F-M to increase its pressure. It worked, as the Hornets spent more time near the Bees’ goal, probed for chances - and broke through when, with 5:16 to play, Tyler Forbes fed the middle, where Brian Ward screamed a low shot

past a diving Alex Bono just inside the right post. Fired up by that tying goal, F-M turned back a B’ville corner kick, then sent the ball down the right sideline as the clock neared the two-minute mark. The Bees were caught out of position as several Hornets came forward - including Mahr. Taking a crisp pass from Anthony Restante, Mahr crushed a shot that Bono had no chance of stopping for the game-winner. With the loss, B’ville fell to 10-2, and now it needed to bounce back when it hosted playoff-bound Liverpool on Saturday afternoon. Thanks to Ben Ramin, the Bees did recover, winning 2-0 over the

13

Warriors. Twice in the first half, Ramin flashed open and put in goals, with Lauko and Mike Guardino taking credit for the assists. All through the rest of the game, B’ville’s defense, stung by the late letdown against F-M, ably protected that lead, holding Liverpool to a scant three shots. The Bees would have another good test Tuesday at West Genesee, then host Auburn Thursday before closing the regular season Saturday at Jamesville-DeWitt. The J-D game is also a Coaches vs. Cancer fundraiser. Varsity and JV teams on both sides will wear special T-shirts and will also sell items to raise money for the American Cancer Society.

state Class AA rankings. That honor arrived just before the Bees’ most important regular-season trip, as it went to Liverpool Friday in search of the outright CNY Counties League National division regularseason title. And the Bees would get it, fighting past the rain and the wind to hold off the Warriors 2-1 - the exact same margin by which B’ville prevailed in the first meeting between the two neighbors back on Sept. 17. In that first meeting at Pelcher-Arcaro Stadium, the Bees pulled it out on Emma Firenze’s goal late in regulation. So the Bees knew that

the Warriors would pose a real challenge, regardless of the conditions. With all the precipitation in the air, and the gusty winds, B’ville had a difficult time in the first 20 minutes, rarely attacking and forced to work in its own end. All that changed, though, when the Bees forced a free kick in the 21st minute. From the left side, Emma Firenze passed it to the middle - and Jackie Firenze banged a header past Tori Corsaro into the net. The combined defensive work of Lena Vecchiarelli, Alexis Czyz and Sarah Lindovski paid off in this game as many of Liverpool’s top

proved enough for a 2-0 victory over the Hornets. Before F-M’s defense could settle down, B’ville had converted twice. Jackie Firenze and Claire Monnat both put shots past Hornets goalie Nina Quigley as Emma Firenze got credit for the assist. From that point forward, Quigley stopped everything else and finished with 10 saves, keeping the game tight. And the fast, aggressive F-M front line made all sorts of attacks, but could not get anything past Lynch or Maggie Monnat as they combined for 12 saves. All that now stood between the Bees and an undefeated regular season was Tuesday’s visit from West Genesee and a Thursday trip to Auburn. On Sunday, the Section III Class AA playoff pairings are announced.

players, including Kim Murphy and Nikki Carfi, rarely got chances in the Bees’ end. It was still 1-0 when, in the 57th minute, a good series of passes set up Jackie Firenze down the left side, and she flew in to beat Corsaro and doubled the Bees’ margin. Only in the late stages did the Warriors begin to attack with consistency. Taking advantage of a rare B’ville turnover, Amanda Heberger went in up the middle and beat Stephanie Lynch with 14:13 left to cut the margin to one, and the Warriors had a fair amount of atttacks in the homestretch, but could not force overtime. Sports Cerqua earns 400 coaching victory th

B’ville girls tennis reaches class a semis

By Phil Blackwell

pblackwell@cnylink.com

Starting out as the no. 4 seed, the Baldwinsville girls tennis team made it to the semifinals of the Section III Class AA tournament, but would get stopped there. It all began in last Tuesday’s opening round against no. 5 seed Whitesboro, where the Bees put together a 7-0 shutout to the Warriors. As Kahlei Reisinger swept Laura Sowalskie 6-0, 6-0, and Catherine Corsito topped Katie Dashiewich 6-2, 6-1, Amari Pollard prevailed in three sets. Over in doubles, Maddie Fiello and Natalie Kot beat Juile Francis and Lacey Hurwitz 6-0, 6-4 as Melinda Davis and Rachel Taylor slid past Viktoriya Montik and Kelly Read 6-1, 6-3. Sarah Corcoran and Taylor Ferrari routed Nikki Lazore and Katilyn Robinson 6-0, 6-1, with Colleen Morgan and Maddie Price producing a 6-0, 6-2 win over Elizabeth Davis and Nil Patel. Weather kept the Bees from playing its Class A semifinal with no. 1 seed Fayetteville-Manlius until Saturday – but once they did play, the Hornets extended its win streak to 288 consecutive matches, eliminating B’ville 7-0. Pollard lost to Carly Romano 6-2, 6-2, with Reisinger falling to Sienna Susko 6-0, 6-3 and Ferrari

accepting a 6-2, 6-0 defeat to Allison Vizgaitis. Moving to doubles, Corcoran and Colleen Morgan had the closest contest, but still had a 6-3, 6-3 loss to Meghan Muraco and Caitlin Welker. Corsito and Davis lost to Rhiannon Iorio and Katie Muller 6-2, 6-1. Price paired with Taylor Slink, falling to Olivia Calancie and Kara Goldberg 6-0, 6-0, with Maddie Fiello and Natalie Kot part of a 6-1, 6-0 loss to Laura Gardiner and Nicolette Hamilton.

Allegra Bell picked up 10 kills and Paulina Rein and Sydnie Hamm each had nine kills. Helping them out, Liz Giromini earned four kills and five digs, while Sarah Klaben picked up three kills and Hamm earned eight digs. As the libero, Becca Maher played stellar defense all night and tacked on four digs. Oswego, in defeat, saw Kristi Stemple earn 21 assists as Jasmine

Davis (11 kills) and Sydney Ward (six kills) worked on the front line. Back in action Thursday night, the B’ville boys volleyball team swept Fowler 25-7, 25-13, 25-10. Splitting the front-line duties, Dan Dubiel had eight kills, while Kyle Lattanzio gained seven kills and Jarret Reaume earned six kills. Ryan Shelton had 15 assists and five aces as Ryan Zbikowski contributed four aces and

Dubiel got four assists. B’ville then split a pair of weekend matches, falling to Rochester McQuaid 25-16, 26-24, 25-14, but beating Midlakes in four games. In the latter contest, the Bees won the opener 25-22, lost the second game 25-21, then survived a long third game 30-28 and closed out the match 25-20 in the fourth game. Shelton had 26 assists against Midlakes, as Chris

Thayer got 12 kills. Dubiel (seven kills), Lattanzio (five kills) and Reaume (six blocks) also had an impact on the back line as Zack Racha gained four blocks and three kills. B’ville’s boys team meets Oswego and Horseheads this week, while the girls Bees attempt to add to Cerqua’s 400-win total against Liverpool and Fowler as the regular season comes to an end.

In what is shaping up to be another impressive march to league, Section III and (perhaps) state championship honors, the Baldwinsville girls volleyball did something special last Wednesday night in Oswego. When the Bees beat the Buccaneers in three games, it gave Mary Jo Cerqua, their coach of 21 years, her 400th career victory, and also moved the team’s mark to 13-0 on the season. In none of those 13 matches has B’ville even lost a single game - they’ve all been sweeps. Under Cerqua’s watch, B’ville has dominated girls volleyball among the large school ranks for much of

the last 15 years, claiming 12 sectional championships during that period. Also, in 2008 and 2009 the Bees reached the state Class AA championships in Glens Falls, though it has fallen just short of the ultimate prize so far. The 2010 edition of the Bees might go all the way, though, and it did not let up against Oswego, despite the momentous nature of the occasion. B’ville won the first game 25-16, then flattened the Bucs 25-10 in the second game before closing it out with another 25-16 decision in the third game. On this night, B’ville relied on one setter, and Brianna Stewart came through with 34 assists and 10 digs. Stewart’s passes went to a trio of front-line stars, as
