Farewell to Farah

Hi Mrs. Farah Jadran Pike! This past issue of the Clay Insider I thought was awesome, especially your farewell which is also sad in that you’ve made that paper as interesting as it is. I’ve heard a lot of good things about the Star Review too which is why I’m writing. I’m Brendan Capria, a soon to be senior at Liverpool High School. This past year I was the sports editor for Liverpool High School’s “The Lifeguard” and will be the associate editor this up coming year. I want to pursue a job in communications [hopefully magazine journalism still holds its own by then] and I just want to get my articles out there to be published. When I do get my articles out there whether it’s writing for “The Lifeguard” or the “Clay Insider” like I have before, I like when people critique my writing and give me their thoughts so I know what I need to do to become that much better. That is my true goal and why I love to write and submit my articles constantly! Thank you so much and I look forward to hearing back! Thanks again! Brendan Capria

Town of Clay Playground Round-up July 12 through 16 Bear Road Elementary

will be fun-filled with Staff v. Kids Day, our talent show, and a Hawaiian Luau.

This week the kids’ competitive sides came out at Bear Road: we had our Individual Olympics at the park. The kids were spilt into three age divisions where each kid participated in contests fighting for points. First place would earn three points, second place would earn two points and third place would earn one point. Campers battled it out in games like longest throw, gladiator dodgeball, obstacle course, and knockout. While all of the kids played well and the scores were close, only a few could clinch the title. In our six through eight division, Aiden Kratz came in first. Todd Koegel came in second and Daniel Calkins came in third. Our nine through eleven division winners were Jacob Longwell taking first, Niko Poniros taking second and a tie for third between Thomas Felicia and Ciera Murphy. Lastly, our 12 through The Clay Insider is currently delivered at no cost to the areas 13 division winners were Chiof Clay in the following zip codes: 13041, 13027 and 13090. ara Armstrong in first, Chuckie Armstrong in second and Nasir If you are not in those areas and would like to receive the Reed in third. Allen Road Elementary

Our third week at Allen Road Elementary was funfilled with special events. Tuesday we had our show and tell day. The kids brought in lots of interesting trinkets to share with the group, including figure skating pins, toy trucks and baseball cards. We learned a lot about everyone! Thursday was our Halloween Day. Everyone got into the spooky spirit by dressing up in costumes. Our counselors chose a Scooby-Doo theme, while our costume contest winner, Logan Bailey, dressed up as his favorite Transformer. Next week will be our Allen Road Penny Carnival on July 20 and Dance Party on July 23. It’s never too late to come sign up and join us at Allen Road Elementary. Town of Clay residents only, please.

Monterey, Cherrington, Kimbrook parks

Another week has passed for the summer of 2010. Our numbers continue to grow as we reached the halfway point of the program on Thursday. Monterey Park celebrated summer with Minute to Win It Day. Activities included games that campers attempted to compete at within a certain time limit. The kids were rewarded with snacks, candy and pizza. Eleven-year-old Matt Petit said that it “was really fun and tasted good.” His sister, Natalie, exclaimed her excitement that even though you didn’t necessarily win, you still were given candy, This activity brought new campers to the program. Mothers of the campers helped with the distribution of the food. It was an overall success and the kids are looking forward to the end of the year picnic.

Remembering Clay

Memoirs of Ernie Balch, continued By Dorothy Heller Last month in Ernie’s memoirs, we left him on his way to Phoenix with eggs from the farm to buy groceries. Let’s continue: “As I was crossing the big bridge, all the Church Bells and factory whistles sounded forth, the WAR WAS OVER!!! Also my brother, Carl, was born on March 4, 1919. “I think it was in the spring of 1919 that we moved to the Town of Clay, to the Felt’s Farm; this bordered on the Oneida River. [Now owned by the Snow family] While Dad worked on this place, he also started to haul milk for other farmers. He had a big pair of horses and a pair of mules. I remember him saying, ‘The road is bad today, I had better take the mules.’ The mules would pull the wagon through the bad spots, rest a bit, then go through the next bad place and rest again. The horses would not take it easy and rest when they might; they would be white with lather and tired, but the mules would be dry and relaxed at the end of the trip. “It was here that I had my first garden; I raised my first pumpkins; and I have tried raising things ever since!! The oneroom school house was on the corner of the farm, [the land for the school had been donated by the former owners] not far to walk. [Taunton school, which was destroyed by a tornado in 1983 when it was used as a private dwelling.] One year there were only two of us in our district [Ernie and Glenn Snow who was four years older than Ernie], so we had to walk

It was while at the Felt’s farm I learned that I had a sister who died at birth; she would have been two years older than my sister, Dorothy. I was stunned!!! “About 1922, my folks bought a small

year mortgage; would you believe it? This was my home for the next 11 years. It was here I finished my eighth grade in the one-room school and graduated Salutatorian at Phoenix High school. [Class of 1930 and the last living graduate of that class]. There were only 16 in my class. It was a five mile walk or bike ride to high school. “While going to high school, a good share of the time I worked on the Felt’s farm, where we had ten cows to milk by hand. It was during this period, my Dad bought a second-hand Fordson tractor; it was a brute to run - iron wheels. My brother Roland was born on February 2, 1925 and brother Kenneth on August 11, 1926. This made us a family of five kids and two parents. “Many things took place on this 27 acre farm. Our next door neighbors, the Brownells, played a big part. We called them Grandma and Grandpa Brownell. We had no grandparents that we knew, having come from England when I was a baby. It was the Bownells who took us to the Euclid ME Church. It was here, in Epworth League, that I met Myrtle, my future wife and mother of my kids.” This column will be continued next month. Exploring ‘Earth’s Own’ foods By Tami S. Zimmerman tzimmerman@cnylink.com

Earth’s Own Market and Cafe has your best interest at heart - literally. The Liverpool-based organic health food store, which celebrated two years in business this July, offers people the opportunity to explore a world rich in nutrients, courtesy of Mother Earth. “The problem with a lot of foods these days is [we’re] not eating real food,” said owner Mario Pirrello. “[We] need to eat real food. I know we like to ‘grab and go’ but we need to turn back the clock a little bit.” Pirrello said his goal is to guide people into living a healthier lifestyle, whether consumers shop his store, or elsewhere. “None of that really matters,” he said. “We just want to bring more people to the category, and we need to grow the category. That’s what it’s about.” What’s the category? Eating wholesome, filling, organic foods that your body recognizes – grains, hormone-free meats, fruits and vegetables. Pirello sells all of the above and buys most of his products from local farms. He sells nothing that is genetically modified. The store’s bulk department, stocked with flours to quinoa to mung beans, is among his top sellers. “All of my bulk can be sprouted. That means it’s alive,” and better for you, he said. “Just like [our] vitamins – ours are derived from live plant matter. [Our bodies] recognize it and absorb it better. It’s common sense. When you put something that’s foreign into your body, your body will naturally fight against it...when you put things that are natural in it, your body won’t resist it.” Pirello spent 20 years working as a distributor of specialty and organic foods, where he said he gained his knowledge and background in the industry. Shoppers with questions can expect one-on-one customer service without being pushed into practice. Tami S. Zimmerman “We’re not here to sell you everything at once,” Pirello said. “Start off basic... We want people to achieve their goals.” Earth’s Own is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 10 a.m. In addition to retail goods, Earth’s Own offers organic meals at its cafe, complete with to 6 p.m. Sunday. The store offers 5 percent off total purchases for members of gyms and soups, sandwiches and wraps made on site with organic ingredients only. Beverages AARP, as well as for military families. Additionally, the store features a discount program include fresh juices, Fair Trade coffees and even slushies – done the right way, he said, up to 10 percent off $50 or more. Baldwinsville Central School District news

More news on capital project, board of education adds new student member Kelly Cary School Information Officer In December 2008, voters in the Baldwinsville Central School District passed a $26 million capital project that will enable the district to continue with renovations in all of the district’s school buildings. Renovations include upgrades in heating, plumbing and the structural elements of buildings. This project will be paid for largely with state aid, both state building aid and state EXCEL aid, as well as with funds from the district’s Capital Reserve. It is expected that there will be minimal impact on property taxes because of this project. Phase 1 of the project was scheduled to begin this fall; however, as of mid-July, the district was still waiting for approval from the State Education Department. James Rodems, Baldwinsville’s Assistant Superintendent for Management Services, said that once the district has SED approval, it will move forward with the bidding process for the construction. Phase 1 includes replacing the current main entrance at Baker High School with a lobby addition and constructing restroom facilities combined with a new concession and storage facility at Pelcher/Arcaro Stadium. According to Mr. Rodems, construction could begin as soon as late October or November. The district will keep residents up to date on the project through the district’s monthly newsletter and through the district’s website, bville.org. BoE adds student member On July 6, Elizabeth Ventura, a senior at Baker High School, was sworn in as the first student member of the Baldwinsville Central School District Board of Education. Voters approved the addition of an ex-officio student member to the board this past May. As an ex-officio member, Ventura is a non-voting member, and she will not sit in on any executive sessions of the board or be privy to any confidential information; however, she will attend every meeting and have a voice at the table. Her number one priority is to bring student concerns and ideas to the board as well as to provide the board with a student perspective on district issues. Her term on the board of education will end on June 30, 2011. In order to be considered for the board position, interested students were required to submit an application to a

Elizabeth Ventura committee composed of Principal Joseph DeBarbieri, Assistant Principal Michelle Crisafulli, and several staff members and students. They also had to interview with the committee before school ended for the summer. Applicants had to be entering their senior year in Sept. 2010. Other criteria included involvement in community and school activities, leadership qualities, and all applicants had to meet the requirements of the district’s academic and athletic codes of conduct. Ventura applied for the board position because she believes it is important for the district’s students to have a voice on the board. “It’s important for someone to talk to the student body and bring student concerns to the attention of the board of education,” she noted. She will make herself available to speak with her peers and listen to their ideas. She plans to periodically sit in on student council meetings, as well as to meet with Baker High School’s extracurricular clubs and organizations. “I’m open to new ideas, to speak with everyone,” she said. Ventura is the daughter of Michael and Kathleen Ventura. She has attended school in the district since kindergarten. She is ranked in the top 10 percent of her class and is a member of the National Honor Society. She is a midfielder for the girls’ varsity field hockey team, for which she was named a CNYCLC All-League Honorable Mention for the fall 2009 season. Ventura has also acted as the junior varsity boys’ lacrosse manager as well as

the varsity boys’ lacrosse manager. Other school activities she has been involved in include varsity indoor track, Key Club, Jenna’s Mentors, and the Baldwinsville Community Scholarship Foundation’s Dollars for Scholars Phone-a-thon. She is an avid equestrian and has been riding and showing horses competitively for most of her life. She works for Events Service Catering and volunteers her time and talent twice a week at Crouse Hospital, working in the hospital library as well as on the cardio unit. She also volunteers for the Baldwinsville Field Hockey Youth Clinics. “We are very excited to welcome a student to the Baldwinsville Central School District Board of Education,” said Board President Victor Jenkins. “We welcome Elizabeth’s views and opinions on a wide variety of topics. She will bring a fresh perspective to issues that affect district students, giving them a voice at each Board meeting.” Jenkins noted that students and all community members are always welcome to attend Board meetings and speak during the public comment period of each meeting. Traffic patterns and class schedules to change at Baker High School and Durgee Jr. High Because of concerns for student safety, the district has changed the traffic patterns for the bus loops at Baker High School and Durgee Junior High School, as well as the schedule of classes for both schools. These changes will begin with the first day of school, Sept. 8. Over the last few years, the high volume of traffic at dismissal times on the district campus has raised many safety concerns. During the time of day when traffic is busiest on the district campus, large groups of students were walking from Durgee over to Baker to board the buses there instead of boarding at Durgee. There are also many students who walk home along the district’s main road. To address these safety concerns, beginning on Sept. 8, the drop off times in the morning and the dismissal times in the afternoon will switch at Baker and Durgee. The buses will drop off Baker students at their building first in the morning. At Baker, the bus loop entrance and exit will be opposite of what currently exists. Buses will enter the loop from the south end, instead of the north end. New stop signs will

be installed at the north end of the loop as well as at the corners where the bus loop intersects with the district’s main road. Please note that parking for visitors and staff will no longer be available in Baker’s bus loop. These spaces have been eliminated. After unloading the Baker students in the morning, buses will exit at the north end of the loop and proceed to the Durgee Junior High School bus loop. They will enter the Durgee bus loop at the south end, instead of the north end. This process will be repeated in the afternoon at dismissal time, with Baker students picked up first, then Durgee students. After the buses are loaded at Durgee, they will exit the bus loop on to Albert Palmer Lane to leave the district campus. Changing the traffic patterns has necessitated changing the schedule of classes for Baker and Durgee. As of Sept. 8, Baker High School will open and dismiss before Durgee Junior High School. In addition, the dismissal times for half days have changed. On a half day, Baker will dismiss at 11 a.m. and Durgee will dismiss at 11:11 a.m. At Baker, the doors will close at 7:30 a.m. and announcements will end at 2:20 p.m. At Durgee, doors will close at 7:40 a.m. and homeroom will end at 2:35 p.m. Crafters Needed Baker High School’s vocal jazz ensemble, Company B (formerly known as Silk & Satin), is now preparing for its annual holiday craft fair, to be held November 13 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the high school located at 29 East Oneida St. in Baldwinsville. Crafters and vendors are needed. If you are interested in participating in the show, contact Rona Rich at 635-7481 or at rona@ twcny.rr.com for more information. District website features alumni spotlight Did you know that the Baldwinsville Central School District’s website features an alumni spotlight? Here the district periodically highlights a graduate of Baker High School, featuring the exciting and interesting things he or she is doing and his or her successes and achievements. You can find this under the “Alumni” heading on the homepage of the website, bville.org. If you would like to be featured in the alumni spotlight, or would like to suggest the name of someone the district should profile, please contact Kelly Cary, school See B’ville, page 9

The North Syracuse Central School District Board of Education held its Annual Organizational Meeting followed by its regular meeting Monday, July 12 at the District Offices, 5355 West Taft Road. During the organizational meeting, Pat Carbone resumed the seat of president and Toni ‘Lyn Brauchle was named vice president for another term. New board member Patrick Svoboda was also sworn in. The regular board meeting immediately followed, where discussion highlights included the asbestos removal at Smith Road Elementary. This plan is part of the school’s renovation project that was approved by the Office of Facilities Planning, New York State Education Departmenton July 1. A timeline has been drafted, and the next step is to award the Asbestos Abatement Contract to the lowest bidder, which will take place during a special BOE meeting at 7 p.m., July 15 at the District Offices. The board also discussed the re-authorization of their agreement with the North Area Volunteer Ambulance Corps. This agreement allows NAVAC to fuel and wash their ambulances at the Support Complex,

5520 Taft Road, in exchange for free ambulance service for District students and staff in emergency situations. NAVAC will also pay the District for each gallon used. The agreement will run from August 1, 2010 through July 31, 2011. Re-authorization agreements for shared services with the town of Cicero and the village of North Syracuse and the YMCA of Greater Syracuse were also approved. Student transportation management was also discussed, where the board called for an amendment to the walking distance limit for the Cicero-North Syracuse High School students. The walking limit was .3 miles, which made it difficult for the bus drivers to deliver the high school students and make it to the middle schools on time. The board expended the walking limit to .5 miles for C-NS students during the afternoon bus deliveries only, which will save the district approximately $39,200. A committee will be organized to review the bussing guidelines for all the schools in the fall to be enacted during the 2011-2012 school year. The next Board of Education meeting is 7 p.m. Monday, July 26 at the District Offices.

Twelve students cleaned in and around the area of Tannery Creek that runs along the Baldwinsville Central School District campus. They collected fifteen bags of trash, as well as twelve tires, eight oil drums, and scrap metal. As part of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s School Seedling Program, students planted sixty tree seedlings on the Baldwinsville Central School District’s campus. The trees will not only enhance the aesthetics of the campus, but they will provide food and shelter for wildlife, act as a natural windbreaker, and help with water drainage.

They also focused on reducing the school’s consumption of energy by encouraging staff members to leave shades open to reduce the need for lights, and to use chalk boards and white boards whenever possible instead of overhead projectors and computers. For one week, the club promoted alternative means of transportation to school, such as biking, walking, and carpooling. To encourage student and staff participation, club members set up a display that outlined the healthful and environmental benefits of biking. The club also conducted a household battery collection, which was a success. They received about 150 pounds of batteries from students and staff, which they brought to an Onondaga County Resource Recovery Agency collection site for
