CLAY I N S I D E R Where the buzz is the news

Every year, countless homes are destroyed or damaged by fire, often blazes that could have been prevented. To assist the community and get the word out about fire prevention, the Clay Volunteer Fire Department will hold its annual Fire Prevention Open House from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday Oct. 9 at fire headquarters, 4383 Route 31, Clay. The event is held in conjunction with National Fire Prevention Week with the theme this year being “Stay fire smart! Don’t get burned.” “It’s a good time to get ready for winter — make sure batteries in smoke and CO detectors are changed, if you have a wood burning stove, make sure it’s cleaned,” said Clay Fire Chief Dan Ford. Ford said there have been a handful of incidents recently that involved untrained persons trying to help during fires, which is the exact opposite of what firefighters want when responding to a call.

The Clay Fire Department headquarters at Station 1 is situated on Route 31 in Clay. A sign in front of the building advertises the department’s annual open house, which is themed “Stay fire smart! Don’t get burned.” Families are invited to enjoy cider and donuts while learning about fire safety.

“Don’t try and be a hero,” he said, adding that firefighters are trained and equipped for battling blazes. “We don’t want to see

programs for the Oct. 9 event. “We’ll try to get the burn house in here so the children can go through there and know what to do when the house is full of smoke,” Patula said. See Open House, page 4

Bayberry meeting successful in many ways By John Dougherty On Sept. 12, I hosted a meeting for Bayberry residents regarding the proposed changes to the county sewer laws. As I discussed in my article last month, these proposed changes may cost county residents thousands of dollars to reconnect their residential sewer connections. These reconnections will be most likely for those residents who live in older homes (pre-1978). Of course this would affect many residents in Clay and virtually everyone in Bayberry, Irongate and Forest Hills. Everyone who attended the meeting on the 12th had a chance to hear directly from members of the county executive’s staff regarding the capacity issue with the county sewers and their proposal to fix it. The residents also heard my opposition to this proposal as being unfair, too broad and far too expensive. For the next two hours, residents voiced their concerns without “holding back. It was a very productive meeting. I feel the proposed law effectively punishes residents who live in older homes

by sticking them with a huge repair bill to fix a sewer connection that was perfectly legal when their homes were built. Everyone who spoke during the Bayberry meeting agreed that it was unfair to expect people to dig up parts of their foundations and front lawns to reconnect sewers only because the building codes have changed since their homes were built. As one Bayberry resident noted to me after the meeting, “Should we also be forced to upgrade the wiring, insulation, windows and roofing on our homes? Those codes have also changed. In my opinion, forcing people to change their sewer connection isn’t much different. After the meeting ended, I had a short discussion with the county executive’s staff about their proposal. I realized then that they knew their proposal had some serious issues. What I hoped to accomplish with the meeting in Bayberry was to inform the public about this proposal and to give them a chance to ask questions. What really happened was much better. Remembering Clay

Memoirs of Ernie Balch By Dorothy Heller

Last month we left Ernie just as he was leaving for his honeymoon after marrying Myrtle at the M.E. Church in Euclid. They set up housekeeping at Mr. Clark’s farm. “We bought our first piece of furniture, a piano for $50.00, delivered upstairs at Clark’s. A few days after our wedding, our group from Church gave us a ‘Horning’. One of our friends could play the piano, and having only a hymnal, we sang church songs. Mr. Clark said, ‘That was the first time I have ever heard church songs at a ‘horning.’ We had a great time. “Things worked out here for a while, Myrtle worked doing house work and I on the farm. In the Spring of 1935, we moved to Weedsport, New York, where we lived in the tenant house on the dairy farm of Mr. Hooper and where I worked. We had electricity but no inside plumbing. He was a very good man to work for; we were there for six years. “Myrtle and I became parents for the first time while at the Hooper Farm. Kenneth after one and a half years came to us on October 22, 1936. Then less than a year later, Joyce became our first daughter on August 15, l937. She was born on the dining room table. A specialist with a nurse was called to help in the delivery; he charged $25.00. The house was so neat that the nurse asked our doctor, ,Mr. Goodman, ‘Is this a farm?’ The doctor replied, ‘Yes, but they are not all like this!’ While on the Hooper

addition to learning about the proposal and getting their questions answered, the residents were so united and vocal in their opposition, they gave me additional leverage to push for some common-sense changes that I have been proposing from the beginning. I am more hopeful now than ever that these changes will find their way into the final proposal. Discussions over the details are still ongoing, but I hope to have some good news soon. I will be hosting another meeting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday Sept. 23 at Clay Town Hall. This will likely be the last public meeting on this issue since this proposal will come to a vote during our October session so I hope anyone who is interested will attend. The meeting on Sept. 23 is open to all Clay residents. If you would like to learn more about this proposal, or if you have any specific questions, please feel free to contact me directly at 657-7640 or via e-mail at john@johndougherty.org. CANstruction benefits Food Bank of CNY

The American Institute of Architects CNY Chapter hosted CANstruction 2010 on Sept. 18 at Great Northern Mall in Liverpool. A total of five structures were built. Participants included Ashley McGraw Architects, P.C., Bivens + Associates Architects, Hueber-Breuer Construction Co., Inc., King + King Architects LLP and Team NKB. CANstruction gives local architecture firms the opportunity to build unique artistic structures out of canned goods. The finished structures were on display at the mall until Sept. 25. The public was given the opportunity to vote for their favorite structure by donating a canned good. All food collected was to be donated to the Food Bank of Central New York. CANstruction is touted as one of the most unique food charities in the world. Teams of architects, engineers and students are challenged across the globe to make artistic structures out of canned goods to help fight hunger. Since its inception, 10 million pounds of food have been donated.

REAL ESTATE MATTERS by Donna Rausch

While it is impossible to predict what a particular house will be worth at any point in the future, single family homes have a track record of being excellent investments. If you want to take the plunge, what should you look for in an investment property?

Location is a prime factor. A great location will make a property easier to rent or sell later on for top dollar. You also want to consider the cash flow situation. It is often difficult to break even or show a profit from your rental income for the first

few years of owning a property. Assuming the property will appreciate as you own it, you will want to consider the potential amount of equity you will build up each year. If you are planning to become a landlord in this area, it is a good idea to consult a Realtor and an accountant to help make sure that your decision to purchase investment real estate is an informed one. taken, and scores of 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams. Twenty LHS students and graduates qualified for the AP Scholar Award by completing three or more AP Exams with grades of 3 or higher: Joseph Baiz, Brynn Bohannon, Devin Clegg, Joseph Corcoran, Jacob Downing, David Faes, Danielle Gilbert, Max Greer, Joshua Grome, Michelle Hemmings-Jones, Joseph Hens, Alicia Leitgeb, Catherine Martin, Sarah Milligan,

Nicholas O’Hara, Joshua Peelman, Erika Salem, Humma Sheikh, Sherice Simpson and Joseph Toth. The College Board’s AP Program provides willing and academically prepared students with the opportunity to take rigorous college-level courses while still in high school, and to earn college credit, advanced placement, or both for successful performance on the AP Exams. About 18 percent of the 1.8 million students worldwide who took AP Exams performed at a sufficiently high level to also earn an AP Scholar Award. Each AP exam is developed by a committee of college and university faculty and AP teachers, ensuring that AP exams are aligned with the same high standards expected by college faculty at some of the nation’s leading liberal arts and research institutions. More than 3,800 colleges and universities annually receive AP scores, and most four-year colleges in the United States provide credit and/or advanced placement for qualifying exam scores. Research consistently shows that AP students who score a 3 or higher on AP Exams (based on a scale from 1 to 5, with 5 being the highest) typically experience greater academic success in college and have higher college graduation rates than students who do not participate in AP.

Representatives from the Baldwinsville Central School District’s fall athletic teams recently presented the Rev. Randy Czyz, pastor of the Word of Life Assembly of God in Baldwinsville, with a donation of $1,600, to be used for the church’s food pantry and for other programs the church runs for local families in need of assistance. Baldwinsville’s fall teams raised the money they donated with a team handball tournament they held this past spring. Here, Joseph DeBarbieri, principal of Baker High School (center, left) and Amanda Ingersoll, a member of the Baldwinsville girls’ varsity soccer team (center, right), present Czyz with a donation on behalf of the Baldwinsville Central School District’s fall athletic teams. With them are representatives from the district’s other fall teams.

Justin Ashworth, library media specialist at McNamara Elementary School in Baldwinsville, had an article he coauthored published in “Library Media Connection Magazine,” a national publication. Ashworth collaborated on the article with Justin Ashworth Judith Dzikowski, director of the OCM School Library System, and Mary Tiedemann, OCM SLS librarian. In the article the authors discuss the success of an initiative through the OCM

BOCES SLS called Partners in Achievement: Library and Students — or PALS. The authors write about the collaboration of library media specialists and classroom teachers to use student assessment data to determine how to enhance a school’s library collection and to create units of study in order to address student needs and increase achievement. Ashworth participated in the PALS initiative for three years, and in the article he recounts how he took a leadership role in working with student assessment data to improve student learning at McNamara Elementary School as well as district wide.
