Every Monday afternoon at Burton Street Elementary, the front gymnasium is transformed into a gymnastics studio. Chuck Parry and his team of certified instructors teach first through fourth grade boys and girls the fundamentals of gymnastics. “There two ways to look at gymnastics, as a sport and as an activity” Parry said. “Today we are focusing more on gymnastics as an activity than a sport. We try to stress the importance of doing your best, rather than being the best” Parry has been conducting educational gymnastic programs for the past 38 years and has been instructing students in Cazenovia for the past 10 years. The class has been held at Burton Street since the beginning of the school year, but seems even more beneficial during the winter months; after being cooped indoors all day, the students use their gymnastics lessons to burn some energy. Parry and his wife Beiana make

weekly trips to area schools, and his Gymnastics and Creative Activity Center has grown to two locations, Baldwinsville and Fairmount. As well as giving the children a creative outlet, the program introduces students to specialized equipment like the balance beam and horizontal bars. The atmosphere of the lessons is always more recreational than competitive.

While Coach Parry once trained professional athletes, this program is more about having fun while getting exercise. Parry has developed advancements in children’s gymnastic equipment throughout his career, and is the owner of numerous patents. He recognized the trouble his most talented pupils were having with full sized devices, and began

creating them on a smaller scale. Today his studios are filled with professional equipment for both young and old gymnasts. At their after-school sessions, Parry and his wife take a relaxed approach with the children instead of strict instruction. Some students receive advice on improving their form, but all are given positive See Parry, page 15

Ringing the church bells 2,000 times for 2,000 years Ten years ago this New Years Eve, the clock struck midnight and the church bells at the First Presbyterian Church of Cazenovia started ringing. And kept ringing. For anyone who couldn’t sleep throughing the resounding chimes, I should apologize. You see, that was Campbell us. My brother and I, along From the with other youth at the Presbyterian Church, wanted to ring the bells 200 times. We figured 2,000 rings might be excessive, but 200 were definitely doable and would be symbolic of the milestone year. It took a while, and as we got closer and closer to 200, an idea starting forming in our heads. I don’t know who

Doug editor

made the final decision, (Sam Shotzberger, who was supervising, might have had a hand in it,) but once we hit 200, we said, “why not go for the full 2,000?” Several alternating shifts and what might have been an hour later, we reached our goal. Hopefully we didn’t keep anyone up too late. A lot has happened in the last ten years; I survived high school, graduated college, and found a job back home in Cazenovia. The village looks a little different to a 24 year old than it did to a 24 year old, but there are some things — buildings, scenery, people — that have stayed, and feel, the same. What significant memories would you like to share from the past decade? The past 50 years? E-mail us at republican@cnylink.com or call 434-8889 x. 338. We’d love to hear from you.

George Boyle has donated three vehicles to the Kidney Car Auto Donation program over the past five years. He chose the Kidney Car Auto donation program as he knows firsthand it’s “a nice way to contribute and know you are doing the right thing.” Funds generated from this program help fund the local programs and services of the Kidney Foundation of CNY. “The process is very easy - no headaches,” Boyle said. “All you do is make a phone call to 800-488-CARS. The tow truck will pick up your car and take it to the auction house at no charge.” Sixteen years ago Boyle’s brother Bob became George’s living donor by donating one of his kidneys. George volunteers at the Kidney Foundation, on the golf committee for the annual NKF Golf Classic. George, Bob and their two brothers competed in the 2010 NKF Golf Classic; they succeeded in winning third place. Years Past

In history

Thank you to Judy Merriam McCarthy, who wrote in with her memories of the house highlighted in the Dec. 15 edition of this column, pictured at right, at 2420 Route 20 East. She shared the following: “The house was the estate of E. Steel Jackson, known as “The Maples.” Steel Jackson was my grandfather. I have many memories of this house, as we lived next door and I spent a lot of time in the house with my grandparents. My mother and father were married in the house. Grandpa had a farm which by today’s standards would be considered small. I remember Mom and Dad helping him put hay in the barn by fork lifting it out of the wagon. Mom would lead the horse and Dad would work the fork and Grandpa would be in the hay mow. “The house was built in 1839 by Eliphalet Steel Jackson Jr. and was handed down through the family. My grandfather was born in the house July 24, 1878 and lived there until he sold it to Harold and Marge Lee in 1946. My mother, Helen Jackson Merriam, along with her two sisters, were born in the house.” The property for this week is pictured below. If you know the history or significance of this house, or if you have memories of it, send your information to discoveringcazenoviashistory@gmail.com by Jan. 5 for inclusion in the next column. We want to hear from you! Please specify whether or not you’d like us to include your name in the column. The forum will featuring remarks from Cazenovia Village Mayor Tom Dougherty, Cazenovia Town Supervisor Ralph Monforte, Nelson Town Supervisor Roger Bradstreet, Fenner Town Supervisor Russ Cary, Cazenovia Central School District Superintendent Robert Dubik and Wayne Westervelt representing Cazenovia College. Assemblyman Bill Magee and State Sen. Dave Valesky are also slated to attend, but both may send emissaries depending on legislative sessions in Albany. Each participant will make a brief presentation about issues and concerns in their respective areas during the past year and what is on the horizon for 2011. A question and answer period will follow. “This is an excellent opportunity for Chamber

members and the community at large alike to hear about what has transpired in their respective community in the past year, what the economy has been like, what projects were undertaken or are underway, and what challenges were met or are on the horizon,” said a Chamber spokesperson. “It will also give these municipal leaders an opportunity to communicate goals and ambitions for 2010.” The public is encouraged to attend. The evening will begin at 6 p.m. with hors d’oeuvres and beverages. There will be a cash bar. The program begins at 6:45 p.m. There is a cost of $15 per person. Advance reservations are required by Jan. 6. For reservations, call the Chamber office at 655-9243 or e-mail cazchamber@windstream.net.

125 Years Ago December 31, 1885 - At a recent meeting of the trustees of the seminary it was decided to build a substantial brick building for a laundry. The ground plan has been agreed upon and arrangements will be made at once. All the unsightly buildings on the campus will afterwards be removed. A Christmas tree heavily laden with beautiful, useful and expensive presents was the attraction at the Episcopal church on Monday evening last. Every one seemed to enjoy themselves to the utmost and returned home wishing that Christmas came oftener. Christmas was very appropriately observed at the M.E. church. Refreshments were served in the church parlors, after which each member of the Sunday School received a handsome card and a package of sweetmeats. 100 Years Ago December 29, 1910 – The Presbyterian and Baptist churches held their Christmas celebrations on Monday evening. At the Presbyterian church a supper was served, while a five-piece orchestra, composed of members of the Sunday school, furnished music. On Christmas day four impressive masses were sung in St. James church…The high altar was adorned by a new ostensorium or remonstrance which was donated by a lady member of the congregation. The ostensorium is a beautiful specimen of handiwork, made of gold and adorned with brilliants and rubies. It is 37 inches high in the shape of a cross with golden rays…The electric cross over the high altar was also used for the first time. 50 Years Ago December 29, 1960 – Cazenovia Lake froze completely over for the first time this winter on Friday, December 23, 1960, and although several warm days have threatened it the ice still remains on the lake. We Welcome. Christmas twins, a son, Terry, and a daughter, Cheryl Ann, born to Mr. and Mrs. Charles Bobbette of 24 Fenner Street, on Christmas Day, Sunday, December 25, 1960, in St. Joseph’s Hospital, Syracuse. The Stone House Studio’s final Christmas party for the dancing classes was held Thursday evening, December 22, for the high school group, who enjoyed supper at the studio before the dance. Highlight of the three ballroom parties was to guess the height of the Christmas tree, which nearly touches the ceiling of the ballroom. All are anxiously awaiting this issue of The Republican to see who won the prize. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Lester announce that a tie exists; and Miss Gayonne Taylor, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Taylor of Cobb Hill, and Miss Jane Skoglund, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Skoglund of West Lake Rd. will share the prize. The two came closest to the exact height of the tree. This column is compiled by Sharon Cooney from the Cazenovia Republican archives at Lorenzo State Historic Site in Cazenovia. It is written in the style of the time. Sharon Cooney is Interpretive Programs Assistant at Lorenzo.

How secure is your online identity? On Dec. 11, hackers managed to break into the records for technology website Gizmodo and the gossip website Gawker (both websites are owned by Gawker Media). The hackers released a database of thousands of users’ e-mail addresses and passwords to the public. In theory, this would not be too much of a problem for most users — if your account was compromised, at most, the hackers could make a comment on the website under your name. But if you’re like most people, you use the same password for everything. And that can be dangerous when some websites, like Gawker, are less secure than others. It isn’t too much of a stretch: If you use the same e-mail address and password on several sites — to check your e-mail, to access online banking, etc. — and someone finds that same password, you could be vulnerable to an attack. But the fix is easy. Change your passwords from website to website! Don’t use a simple dictionary word, either — sophisticated hackers’ computer programs can try to break into your account with brute force, guessing thousands of words at a time. Google has provided a list of suggestions for password security. For more information, visit google. com/accounts/PasswordHelp. Tips for creating a secure password

Include punctuation marks and/or numbers. Mix capital and lowercase letters. Include similar looking substitutions, such as the number zero for the letter ‘O’ or ‘$’ for the letter ‘S’. Create a unique acronym. Include phonetic replacements, such as ‘Luv 2 Laf.’

Things to avoid:

Don’t use a password that contains personal information (name, birth date, etc.) Don’t use words or acronyms that can be found in a dictionary. Don’t use keyboard patterns (asdf ) or sequential numbers (1234). Don’t make your password all numbers, uppercase letters or lowercase letters. Don’t use repeating characters (aa11).

Tips for keeping your password secure:

Never tell your password to anyone. Never send your password by email. Periodically test your current password and change it to a new one.

Thanks to the free press for promoting free public libraries

To the editor: Thanks to you for announcing, reporting and documenting public library news this year. Your readers and our patrons have benefitted from accurate, timely inclusion of library-related information in your publication. Attendance at programs and events increased this year. New visitors to the library often mention that they learned about the library from the newspaper. Where people were recognized or acknowledged for their skills or contributions, you have provided a platform for celebrating and honoring them. There was much to report on the New Woodstock Free Library in 2010. A group of local residents led by Babette Vaas, working with the Town of Cazenovia Highway Department, Councilman Sparky Christakos and the town board, the fire department, the library and a large number of individuals, installed a modern new playground

system behind the library. The playing fields were resurfaced and drainage was improved. Bleachers and picnic tables were added for families and spectators. A crosswalk was installed for pedestrian safety. Free downloadable audio and eBooks were added to book format choices through the Mid York Library System. The back of the library was resided, insulated and painted with the help of a library construction grant. The library was ranked first among libraries of its size in New York State. Jim Ridlon and Dorothy Riester presented major art exhibits at the library. All this and more was reported in the news. If there are two institutions responsible for preserving and promoting our democratic way of life, they are a free press and free public libraries. Our shared goal is to provide everyone with uncensored access to the information, facts and resources needed to be informed participants in our society. We will be here in 2011 to provide free unrestricted access to publicly available library and infor-

Co. (905 Four Seasons Road, Bloomington, IL 61701, call 309-662-7761 or online at eburgess.com) or Logee’s Greenhouse (online at loges.com). Once you get your TR Hovey papaya plant it in a large pot or tub. Since papayas are originally from tropical America try to keep the soil temperature above 60 degrees. Keep your plant in a bright sunny window. You

can give it additional light with a grow light bulb. TR Hovey papaya blooms from buds on the trunk of the tree. After blooming, fruits will start forming at just a foot from the base of the plant. Fertilize lightly with a good organic houseplant food but don’t overfeed it. Though your papaya can grow up to eight feet tall, you can cut back the top to keep it in check.

Papayas are susceptible to spider mites so if you notice any pests try spraying with Neem oil. So eat, drink and be merry, then have papaya for dessert. And if that papaya is one from your very own indoor TR Hovey papaya then so much the better. As for indigestion relief, your homegrown papayas may even do better than the Sivalinga stone of Temple of Doom.

ruptured disc. Now you can grow this exotic fruit indoors. A special hybrid papaya will grow on a dwarf tree that will produce fruit when it is only 2.5 to 3 feet tall. It is the cultivar known as “TR Hovey” papaya and is perfect for growing in pots. Best of all, it can bear fruit in under a year. In addition to the

sweet flesh of the fruit, the peppery somewhat bitter, black seeds are edible as well and will add an exotic touch to salads. Even when not fruiting, the TR Hovey papaya has striking tropical foliage and makes a nice large houseplant. Your papaya will need bright, sunny, warm growing conditions, so you can move it outdoors for the summer and back inside

Sudanese expatriate speaks out at Caz College Syracuse woman concerned about fraud and freedom in Sudan Akuot Deng Leek, a student in Cazenovia College International Studies Program, has a deep-seated interest in an upcoming referendum in South Sudan, her original home On Jan. 9, southerners in Sudan will vote on whether to become independent or to remain united with the north. The vote comes from a 2005 peace deal that ended Sudan’s 21-year civil war. “Southerners are expected to vote overwhelmingly in favor of separation,” said an article from Voice of America (voanews.com), and “a deep mistrust remains between north and south. But there is widespread concern the north will not allow a peaceful separation.” Although she has been termed a Lost Girl of Sudan, Akuot was never actually ‘lost,’ unlike her older brother, John Dau, of Syracuse. Akuot was born into the Dinka tribe in South Sudan. Her childhood memories are of seemingly endless walking, of hunger, and of constant fear, but she traveled with her mother and other

family members. In 2004, she and her mother joined her brother in Syracuse. Not long after that, in 2005, a peace agreement between the north and south was ratified. Now a United States citizen, and a senior at Cazenovia College, Akuot has focused her life on gaining the education she was denied in Sudan. She is determined to use her education to benefit her country of birth. Akuot is currently deeply involved in urging members of the news media to be present at Sudanese polling places during the upcoming referendum on the secession of South Sudan, which begins on Jan. 9. With both technical and registration difficulties, the potential for voting fraud is considered to be high. In a letter to national and international news outlets and agencies, Akuot wrote, “Your presence will mean corruption-free voting. Please do not leave South Sudan on its own during voting because there would be no future for us. The Northern government is good at paying the local people off, but if the world is watching, there are chances that Omar al-Bashir would be afraid. I am counting on the press to help South Sudan succeed.” The possibility of returning to her home country is on Akuot’s mind. She said that a vote for separation of South Sudan will give her freedom to choose

which religion to serve. “It means that my children will have the right to choose which school they want to attend, instead of being forced to receive Islamic education,” she said. The possibility of renewed civil war in Sudan after the referendum worries Akuot. Some of her family members are still in Sudan, including both of her parents. Although many of her relatives are in the United States, Canada and Australia, all have close friends and other family members still in Sudan. Akuot’s concerns for the fate of her country and her people have steered her education and focused her interests on international human services. She is a senior in Cazenovia College’s International Studies Program, and hopes for a career that will give her the means to provide humanitarian aid to the people of Sudan, and other countries where people long for the freedom and prosperity she has seen here in the United Discover the world’s finest furniture from Stickley, John Widdicomb, States.

During that time, he has been instrumental in providing leadership for curriculum and program development and has provided strong guidance for the department. He has also led the school in the development and creation of the Morrisville State College Entrepreneurial Institute and Morrisville VentureConnects, now offered through a partnership with The Tech Garden. Sports Caz hockey skates past Skaneateles By Phil Blackwell Not so long ago, the notion that the Cazenovia ice hockey team would consistently outplay its namesakes from Skaneateles was absurd. All of that changed a season ago, when Cazenovia’s run to the Section III Division II finals included a 2-0 win over Skaneateles in the semifinals at Allyn Arena, a road conquest that was a landmark in the newer

Lakers’ rise to power. Now Cazenovia was expected to do well against Skaneateles – which is exactly what happened last Tuesday night at the Morrisville State IcePlex as Cazenovia prevailed by a score of 4-1. With that win, Cazenovia took over sole possession of first place in Division II with a 4-0 mark as it is the league’s lone undefeated team. Through a scoreless first

period, Cazenovia stayed patient, continually attacking the Skaneateles net and looking for a way to beat goalie Trevor Diamond. The hosts finally did so, twice, in the second period, leading to a 2-1 lead, and all that relentless pressure wore Skaneateles down as Cazenovia added two more tallies in the third period for insurance. Brian Gara had a part in each of the goals, scoring once and piling up three

assists. Those passes went to Joe Nardella, Lucas Catania and Sean Cannizzaro, each of whom would convert and get their own assists, too. Sam Lewis added an assist. In defeat, Diamond, who was the goalie on the undefeated Skaneateles boys soccer team that won the state Class B championship, honored himself by recording 45 saves. Cazenovia took four times as many shots as Skaneateles, only

allowing 13 attempts from the other side. Now the Lakers had to avoid a letdown Thursday night against New Hartford, the reigning state Division II champions who, gutted by huge personnel losses (to graduation and junior hockey), had started 0-2. Just before this, Hamilton had gone through another high-scoring affair Wednesday against Central Square, prevailing 7-5 over

Cazenovia boys indoor track team earned 51 points for fourth place at the Mohawk Valley Indoor Track Association gathering held at Colgate University, not far from Utica Proctor’s winning total of 70 points. Led by Tom Mackowiak, the Lakers tied for second in the 55-meter dash in 14.34 seconds and grabbed second alone in the 600 (3:13.83) and 1,000 (5:52.52), with Pat Dermody and Noah Shephard running in both events. The Lakers were also third in the 3,200, triple jump and pole vault, plus fourth in the high jump.

the Red Hawks at Cicero Twin Rinks. Three times in the first period, Central Square went out in front – but each time, the Emerald Knights would quickly answer and tie it, leaving it 3-3 going into the second period. Central Square then seized a 5-4 lead going into the third period. But Kinnon Nolan-Finkel tied it on a nifty pass from Alex Brink with 10:49 left and, three minutes later, fed Brink on a breakaway. Brink beat Cory Gossluax for the goahead goal. Not done yet, Brink added an empty-netter in the final minute, finishing with two goals and three assists. Ricky Runyon scored twice in the early going as Alex Foster got a goal and two assists and Nick Koen added one goal and one assist. Brandon Thomas got credit for a pair of assists. At 2-1 in Division I (3-2 overall), Hamilton meets Fayetteville-Manlius Wednesday at the IcePlex, a day after Cazenovia plays Frontier, a Section VI school from the Buffalo suburbs.

Twice in a span of 24 hours, the Cazenovia wrestling team would compete, inside and outside the OHSL Liberty division. First, the Lakers had a league match at JordanElbridge last Wednesday night, and had some bright moments – but still took a 42-31 loss to the Eagles. Sports Track girls win again, smash records By Kurt Wheeler The Cazenovia girls indoor track team rolled to its second consecutive big meet victory as it scored 114 points to top the 15 team field at Colgate University on December 21. The Lakers posted a package of impressive performances as they won seven of 14 events, broke four school records and achieved a series of section-leading times and distances. Clinton was runner-up at 71 points with Rome Free Academy third at 68. Ashley Winn led the Lakers on the track as she partnered with speedy Jill Vogl to win the 55-meter dash and 300-meter dash events in the relay format meet. Winn’s 7.70 (automated timing) set a new school record and leads Section III so far this season. Vogl was close behind

in an impressive 7.86. Winn and Vogl also went 1-2 in the 300 to lead all Section III runners as they both shattered Vogl’s own one year-old record. Winn set a new mark in 42.53 seconds with Vogl at 43.29. Freshman Jeanette Cudney also got in the record books, setting a new school mark of 11:40.94 in the 3000 as she partnered with Tori Wright (13:02.91) for first place. The 55-meter hurdle duo of Paige Biviano (9.67 seconds) and Beth Marcelle (10.90) also captured first as did Hollie Marcelle (3:21.07) and Margaret Wolsey (3:25.41) in the 1,000-meter run. Marcelle was first as an individual in the 600 (1:46.38), teaming up with Emma Wolsey (1:56.34) for third as a team. Audrey Bowers (28.78) and Emily Clipston (31.80) were also third in their 200-meter dash relay. Em-

majean Speer (2:50.1 in the 800) led the Sprint Medley Relay of Kara Stalder (400), Hannah Light-Olson (200) and Ashleigh Schmidtka (200) to victory to close out the track events. Grace Eberle improved on her own school record in the 20 pound weight throw (26-6.5) as she teamed with Tess Wright for fourth as a relay. Piper Gianforte posted the top height in Section III in the pole vault this season as she cleared 86, partnering with Michelle McGinnis (7-0) for first as a team. Isabel Stockmar (300.5) and Christy Tainter (27-5) also captured first in the shot put while teammates Paige Biviano and Laura Fitch each cleared 4-7 in the high jump for second as a relay. The Lakers also brought home a pair of third place finishes in the jumps as Audrey Bowers (13-7) and Becca Wheeler

(12-4.5) scored in the long jump and Megan Stanford (28-2.5) and Alaina Kelahan (26-9) got on the board in the triple jump. Cazenovia has jumped out to the front during its first two meets with a balanced attack in the sprints, distance and field events. The Lakers will be back in action in another invitational at Colgate over their vacation before contesting the Mohawk Valley and Onondaga High School League Championships during the first eight days in January. Kurt Wheeler coaches the girls track team.

Jill Vogl helped the Lakers to wins in the 55- and 300-meter dashes as Cazenovia scored in every event and won seven of 14 to score 114 points, dominating the 15 team field for its second consecutive win.

Caz girls hoops handles Marcellus, moves to 3-0 By Phil Blackwell For some basketball teams – especially at the girls high school level – the loss of a star player means instant disaster or, at the very least, a whole lot of struggle. But the Cazenovia Lakers are defying that trend – at least for the time being, as without senior forward Ashley Stec it has won backto-back games in convincing fashion. The Lakers went into the holiday break with fresh confidence after going to Marcellus last Tuesday

night and, led by a big effort from Raeanne Clabeaux, beating the Mustangs 5941. Putting on lots of defensive pressure, Cazenovia augmented its early 18-10 lead by holding Marcellus to a scant three points in the second quarter. This gave the Lakers a 31-15 margin that it would generally maintain the rest of the night. Clabeaux helped in that maintenance. Whether it was her tenacious defense or the outside shots that kept falling (including a pair of 3-pointers), Cla-

beaux stood out as she finished with 23 points. Ellen Burr and Taylor Malmsheimer provided the help, as Burr finished with 14 points and Malmsheimer posted a season-best 12 points, including seven free throws. Melissa Lee led Marcellus with 11 points. On Monday and Tuesday, Cazenovia would take part in the Unadilla Valley Tournament, its last games before 2011 – when Stec is expected to return from her ankle injury to make the Lakers even more dangerous.

By Phil Blackwell As it limped to an 0-2 start, not really close to winning either of its first two games, the Cazenovia boys basketball team had to wonder how bad it would get before things would start to brighten. But in a stunning turnaround last Wednesday night, the Lakers played superb defense from start to finish and beat Marcellus, 42-39, at Buckley Gym to give head coach Paul Harney his first win running the boys program.

When Cazenovia fell behind 16-12 in the first period, it looked like the familiar losing pattern would take shape. Instead, the defense clamped down in the second quarter and held Marcellus to a scant four points, and suddenly the Lakers led 21-20. With newfound confidence, Cazenovia could shake off an uneven third quarter, turning again to its defense in the homestretch. All the Mustangs could manage was seven points in the fourth quarter, giving the Lakers room to move ahead and stay there.

On the offensive side, no one stood out – but no one had to. Tanner Whiteman and Doyle Judge each had nine points, while Tom Toole finished with eight points. Ben Romagnoli and Oliver Gates got six points apiece, all of Gates’ points coming at the free-throw line. The Mustangs’ Steve Raven led both sides with 13 points. So the Lakers suddenly had momentum as it took the court Tuesday and Wednesday in the FabiusPompey Tournament, trying to build upon what it did against Marcellus.
