Traumatic Brain Injury: Amy’s story By Tami S. Zimmerman tzimmerman@cnylink.com

For two consecutive weeks, The Eagle Bulletin has published articles to acknowledge March as National Brain Injury Awareness Month. The first ar ticle cov ered the seriousness of stroke, the second focused on concussions. This week’s article emphasizes the dangers of Traumatic Brain Injury, or TBI. In a split second, Au b u r n n at i ve A my Rankin’s life was forever changed. She was 23 years old, a new teacher in Baltimore, Md. and had just chap eroned her f ir st middle school dance. She and her friend celebrated with dinner and drinks. But after a little to o much w ine, they decided it best not to drive. Had 21-year-old Mi-

chael Robertson made the same decision, it would be safe to say Rankin’s life would have been unaffected. But he didn’t. Robertson ran up a curb, speeding between 50 and 55 mph in a 15-mph zone and hit Rankin, who was standing in a grassy area off the pavement of a nearby shopping mall where the two girls just spent the evening. A first offender of driving while intoxicated, Robertson spent just 18 months in jail. Six years after the accident, however, Rankin continues to adjust to a whole new way of living. For 33 days, Rankin was in a coma. She was diagnosed w ith t raumatic brain injury; the difficulty was with the swelling of the brain, her father said. The doctors’ prognoses were g r im – they gave her family no hope. She wouldn’t be able to walk nor talk. She

Village considers funding plea By John Zych

The community food pantry is seeking financial aid from its villages to support operating expenses and programs. The Fayetteville Board of Trustees heard the plea March 22 during its regular meeting at village hall. Linda Napier, director of F-M Community Outreach, inquired if there was any available monies for the non-profit charitable organization that coordinates all outreach programs within Fayetteville and Manlius.

In July 2009, the F-M Food Pantry was reorganized into an independent community ministry providing a multitude of services including clothing for school-age children, emergency financial assistance and the food pantry that distributes nearly 5,000 meals per month. Napier, who is making a similar request to the Manlius village board, said the F-M Community Outreach, Inc. relies on funding through food and clothing drives, grants and the Food Bank of Central New York. She spent 101 days in Baltimore – first at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where she was taken after the accident, then at a rehabilitation center where her parents Bill and Patty said she received very poor care. After what the family now calls a “ripple effect,” Bill and Patty brought her to St. Camillus Health & Rehabilitation Center. “A whole bunch of people started popping up talking about St. Camillus,” said Bill, who served 10 years as the Faye t t e v i l l e - M a n l i u s High School vice principal until 1981. F-M proposed budget ups tax rate 1.8 percent By Chris Ivan

The F-M Board of Education is considering a 2010-11 budget of $74,020,753. The budget would increase spending $505,847, or 0.69 percent, over the current year budget, the smallest budget-to-budget increase in at least a decade. District officials presented the budget at the March 22 Board of Education meeting. The budget will remain under review until April 12, when the board is expected to approve the final version of the budget. That is the budget that will go before voters May 18. If the proposed budget were to be approved by the board and then by voters, the district ’s tax levy

would increase by 1.89 percent to $51,556,141. Because property assessments are not expected to increase next year, district officials predict tax rates would also increase, on average, by 1.89 percent. District officials said the budget creation was guided by the district’s 21st Century Learner Attributes. The budget also incorporated the ideas and values of district residents, as expressed during three budget forums and an online budget survey. “We heard two things from our community,” Superintendent Corliss Kaiser said during the board meeting. “Do not change the quality of our programs (because) our children See Budget on page 8

COMMUNITY Mayors for meals

Long-time DCL patron Ray Parfitt remembered by Carol Youngs

Raymond (Ray) Parfitt, age 85, walked five miles a day. His stops included the DeWitt Community Library, the grocery store and the bank. Af ter Ray passed away in January, one of his daughters, Nanette Parfitt-Burnett, stopped into the library with her husband, Michael. “We’d like to do something for the library in honor of my father ’s love of learning, ParfittBurnett said. With thanks to Ray’s family, for their gift in honor of their father, a memorial plaque will be placed on a section of shelving in the DCL’s new non-fiction area. Library visits were a weekly Friday night occurrence while raising his six children. “Coming to the library was like a religion in our family, Parfutt-Burnett recalled. Having lived through The Great Depression, Ray, a retired electr ical eng ineer, knew the value of a dollar. His family remembers riding in a vintage Dodge station wagon, the rusted floorboards shored up with plywood, one of many thrifty habits that enabled Ray to put all 6 of his children through college – with no loans. He made seatbelts for the kids, before seatbelts were a common safety measure; and, at his wake, at Ray’s specific

Four area mayors helped deliver food to residents during the 5th annual Mayors for Meals Day. Village mayors Mark Olson of Fayetteville, Mark-Paul Serafin of Manlius, Dick Donovan of Minoa and Beth Greenwood of Tully met late morning March 24 at F-M/J-D Meals on Wheels in order to participate. A first time experience for Greenwood and Serafin - both voted in as mayors last year – Serafin said it’s a spirit of service. “That’s what we’re here for, he said. “We’re here to help. Greenwood joined on to learn more about the program, since the villages of Tully and LaFayette have just recently begun a Meals on Wheels program. She said she thought it would be a good idea to get involved from the get-go. Repeat participants Donovan, who was

already on the road with other volunteers, and Olson, have been involved in the Mayors for Meals Day since its inception in 2005. “The satisfaction I get out of it is seeing the needs our residents have, and to see that this service really provides a daily interaction with people and an important meal for them, Olson said. “We just wish more people could use it. So by us being here, hopefully, we’ll get more people involved in using this service.

Interested in becoming a volunteer? Contact F-M/J-D Meals on Wheels Director Terry Davis at 637-5446 or e-mail her at fmjdmealsonwheels@verizon.net. Hours of operation are from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The F-M/J-D Meals on Wheels serves Fayetteville, Manlius, Jamesville, DeWitt and neighboring communities east of Syracuse.

Manlius Car Wash set to open this week By Tami S. Zimmerman tzimmerman@cnylink.com

The former Manlius Car Wash located at 240 W. Seneca St. has been vacant for about three years. This week, the car wash is set to reopen with the same name, but different owner. Brian Tennant’s request for a special permit was unanimously granted by the Manlius Village Board at its March 23 meeting, contingent on the approval of the county planning board, which took place the following day. The Manlius Car Wash is comprised of four selfservice bays and one drive-

thru. Tennant said the car wash will be run differently than in the past, noting he has several ideas to make the place unique and full of “pizazz. For instance, he would eventually like to offer fishing poles so children could fish off Limestone Creek while their parent(s) are cleaning their car. Additionally, Tennant said the business could also help students with fundraising events. “We just want to open a car wash, wash cars and be part of the community, Tennant said. An attendant will be on duty at all times during

open hours, from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. The car wash was previously owned by Jon Geller, who purchased it from former mayor Ed Lowenstein in June 2004. The current property owner is Mike Silberberg of Berkley Properties, who, according to Mayor Mark-Paul Serafin, may work with Tennant in giving the building a facelift.

Savings incentive Because the village of Manlius must reduce its energy use by 15 percent, Trustee Scott McGrew recently met with National Grid representatives to learn where the municipal-

ity can save both financially and on energy consumption. Modifications would include installing occupation detectors so when people walk in and out of a room, lights turn on and off automatically. After McGrew and representatives toured both fire stations, the DPW garage and the village portion of the village centre, National Grid estimated costs for the village to be approximately $31,000, a sum which amounts to about a quarter of the actual cost of modifications, with National Grid covering the rest.

request, the family toasted him with chardonnay from a box. One of Ray’s favorite sayings was ‘you don’t have to have money to read.’ He wisely used Parfitt many of the DCL’s free resources, including the Value Line reference books to help track likely companies in which to invest. The Post Standard held a contest a few years back – make a guess at the Dow Jones average. Ray won; his guess was within one decimal point of the final answer. An avid mystery fan, he took out DVDs for entertainment and enjoyed the many offerings in the periodical section to sate his voracious appetite for a wide assortment of interests. Ray’s legacy, aside from the many generosities extended to his family, friends and neighbors is that today all six of his children are great readers and continue to use their community libraries in towns and cities across the U.S. “Dad was always thinking of others, his daughter said.

Christopher Mancuso of Holy Cross School gets his head shaved to honor kids with cancer.

The Holy Cross School team had their heads shaved March 21 at Kitty Hoynes Irish Pub to honor kids with cancer. Bald heads, smiles, laughter and tears were met at the St. Baldrick’s fundraising event. Children young and old, male and female sat side by side and faced the clippers as part of the worldwide effort of Shaving the Way to Conquer Kids’ Cancer. The Holy Cross team of Dewitt raised more than $11,000. St. Baldrick’s funds are granted to some of the most brilliant childhood cancer research experts in the world to find cures and improve the quality of life for patients and survivors. The Foundation funds more in childhood cancer research grants than any organization except the U.S. government. St. Baldrick’s donors and volunteers made possible over $12 million in funding for childhood cancer research in 2009. To date, more than 106,000 volunteers have shaved their heads in solidarity with kids fighting cancer at more than 2,400 emotional events in 50 states and 24 countries. Each year, 160,000 children are diagnosed with cancer worldwide. Cancer is the number one disease killer of children in the U.S. and Canada. Research saves lives. Locks of Love is a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children in the United States and Canada under age 21 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis.

Dur ing my recent town hall meetings, I stressed to my constituents that this year ’s budget must include significant cuts, including cuts to education. However, the governor ’s proposed $1.4 billion in cuts to schools – the largest proposed cut in history – will only shift the burden to local property taxpayers and force Central New York schools to layoff hundreds of teachers, increase class sizes and eliminate educational programs. That’s why the Assembly is scaling back the governor ’s draconian cuts to schools and restoring $600 million in cuts to education. The Assembly budget also rejects the governor ’s

As a former editor of the Eagle Bulletin, I relied upon Joe to cover the village of Fayetteville, a task he did with gusto and, at times, humor. The village board is about to work on the budget for our next fiscal year. This directly affects our taxes and services. Village board meetings are open to the public and take place on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. at the Manlius Village Centre, 1 Arkie Albanese Ave. As you can imagine, the turnout to these meetings is always very low. We need to address fire department facilities and studies on consolidation, Swan Pond and park renovations, and a business district that is struggling in these economic times. attended the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City, where she specialized in sportswear and eveningwear for women. During her junior year, she studied abroad at Polimoda, FIT’s sister school in Florence, Italy, and her life was forever changed. Today, Diederich lives in a small town just outside Florence and works on her collections, though all of her business is based in New York. The name “Suite” was inspired by her experience at the Plaza Hotel as she waited for her Italian visa from the consulate in New York. While Diederich didn’t actually stay in a suite, she spent time with her mother and best friend from high school and celebrated her birthday in the city as she waited. “The day I got my visa was one of the best days of my life so far,” she said. “This was a special moment in my life, and I wanted my clothing line to reflect this charm.” The word “suite” is also

pronounced and written the same way in English, French and Italian, which prevents confusion during conversation when she tries to talk to others about her collection in Italy. Diederich describes her designs as 50s- and 60s-inspired feminine shapes— mostly sk irts, blouses and party dresses—with quirky details. “I like to design items that, with a few small accessory changes, can go from day to night and spring to fall,” she said. “My clothes will become staples in your wardrobe.” When thinking up new designs, Diederich said she is most inspired by fashion designer, Elsa Schiaparelli, who she describes as “an artist that made clothes,” as well as everyday objects. For her spring collection, she made a skirt inspired by the goldfish in plastic bags of water given out at carnivals. “I made a bubble skirt that had the shape of the bag and the pockets were

F-M appoints two new principals The principals at FayettevilleManlius High School and Wellwood Middle School will be new next year, but they won’t be unfamiliar to students, teachers and families. The Fayetteville-Manlius Board of Education at its March 22 meeting approved the appointment of Ray Kilmer as F-M High School’s next principal, and Melissa Corbin as Wellwood’s next principal. Both currently serve as assistant principals in the buildings they will lead starting in July. Kilmer and Corbin were selected through an extensive search process, said Superintendent Corliss Kaiser. “They have each gained excellent experience as part of our administrative staff, Kaiser said. “We are pleased that they will be remaining with us and that they will be taking on new responsibilities. Current high school principal Jim Chupaila and Wellwood principal John Almonte will retire at the end of June.

About Kilmer

Bucko is a professor of anthropology and Native American studies, and serves as the chair of Creighton’s sociology and anthropology department and director of the university’s Native American Studies Program. He is an advisor to the Sioux Spiritual Center on inculturation. The Loyola Lecture is an event in which a Jesuit scholar, or a scholar who speaks on a topic related to Jesuit education, theology or church life, is invited to address the campus community. This year’s event is sponsored by Le Moyne’s Jesuit community and is free and open to the public.

Schools to hold summer driver education

Kilmer began his teaching career at F-MHS as a social studies teacher. He taught law studies, U.S. history, and SUPA psychology. “We’ve known Ray’s work, from the classroom up through the assistant principalship, and he has always done an outstanding job, Kaiser said. Kilmer said he loved teaching, but

working on district-wide committees showed him new ways to contribute to students’ success. That led him to seek a position in school administration. He became an assistant principal at the high school in January 2007. “It became clear to me that I wanted to have a larger role in how schools operate, to be a part of more students’ lives, Kilmer said. Even though he is no longer in the classroom, he strives to maintain direct relationships with students, he said. “You just have to make it an important part of your day, he said. One of the most challenging aspects of his new job will be sustaining the kind of change needed to help students master 21st Century skills. “One thing I would like to place an emphasis on in my first year is opening new channels of communication, Kilmer said. “Providing additional forums for students, parents and community members will help us expand our partnerships to develop 21st Century learners.

About Corbin Corbin began her career as a seventh grade English teacher, first at Percy Hughes Magnet School in Syracuse, and then at Liverpool Middle School. “When I started teaching, I never thought that I would do this, she said

of school administration. “I loved being in the classroom and working with my middle school students. After an administrative internship at Liverpool Schools, she fell in love with administration, too, she said. “I really enjoy the work that I am able to do with all members of our school community, Corbin said. “As a building administrator, I am able to support students, teachers and parents. This allows me to contribute to the success of both our students and staff. She became an assistant principal at Wellwood in 2006. “We have been able to see, up close and personally, her leadership style, Kaiser said. “That style fits the needs of Wellwood. Corbin said she has learned a lot during her four years at Wellwood. “I’m very happy here, she said. “This is just such a great building and such a great school district. The relationships she has developed with Wellwood students, families and teachers should help her transition to her new role as principal, she said. “I look forward to building on those relationships and continuing to support our students, families and teachers, Corbin said. “I want to continue to build the sense of community at Wellwood.

BUSINESS Living the dream New country wares store opens in Canal Barn By Tami S. Zimmerman tzimmerman@cnylink.com

Having grown up in Fayetteville, Melissa Mooney said she fell in love with The Canal Barn at a very early age. She was 11 years old when she first stepped into the 19th century structure with an attractive rustic setting. The barn, located along the historic Erie Canal in Fayetteville, used to be chock full of specialty retail stores, including a doll shop and quilt shop that occupied two upper floors. “I remember the first time I ever walked into the Canal Barn,” Mooney said. “I fell in love with it. That’s kind of like the first time I realized I wanted to open up my own little shop,” Mooney said. “So when this [space] became available, it was like a dream come true.” On March 18, Mooney opened Crow Hollow Primitives, where

she sells her favorite kind of décor: primitive wares and country goods. The store is located on the second level. “I sell handcrafted furniture along with candles, framed pictures, linens, handmades, wreaths, rugs and other primitive country home décor and gift items,” she said as a first time store owner. The Canal Barn is well known among residents of Fayetteville and Manlius, and has a history that extends more than a century. Mooney said the barn, built around the 1860s, was moved to its current location on Cedar Bay Road from its original site near Chittenango, to prevent its demise – it was set to be demolished. “Everybody who walks into the Canal Barn, they kind of fall in love with it, “ she said. “A lot of people have said they’re happy to see a shop like this in here because it’s what the Canal Barn is all about, what it used to be about.

Senate Majority committed to saving our parks Senate Democrats preserve recreational facilities By Randi Hull

The Senate Majority and advocates have taken a stand together in support of state parks. On March 22, the Majority Conference unanimously voted for a budget resolution which restored all $11.5 million of the Governor’s budget cuts to parks operations. If enacted, the cut would have resulted in the closure of 57 state parks and reduced operations at an additional 22 state parks. The use of parks for recreational activities generates $1.9 billion in revenue, five times the agency’s total budget. The closure

In brief

of these parks would have a devastating effect on small businesses, restaurants, and other economic engines in communities who are largely based around the tourism revenue generated by these parks. “State Parks are part of our history and our future,” said Senate Majority Conference Leader John L. Sampson. “They are the economic engine that drives our tourism industry. We need a fair and responsible budget, and cutting our parks is neither a fair or responsible solution to the fiscal crisis. While Senate Republicans claim they support our parks, but refuse to vote for them, the Senate Majority kept its promise to our parks and the families who enjoy them.” Sen. David J. Valesky (D-Oneida) also commented. “Our parks are the crown jewels of New

York state,” he said. “These state parks and historic sites are important not just for the recreation they provide, but are a critical component of our tourism industry, contribute to our quality of life and promote regional economic well being. The Senate Democratic majority has fought to save our parks, and as we move through the final stages of budget negotiations, I implore my colleagues in the Legislature to leave politics aside, and to work together to make sure that the end product of this budget protects our parks.” Local parks that would have been affected by Paterson’s proposed cuts include Green Lakes State Park, Chittenango Falls, Clark Reservation in Jamesville, and the Old Erie Canal State Park.

Randi Hull is the editor of Madison County Eagle.

State parks facts: Over the past two years, State parks have been cut by $46 million, which equates to 25 percent of the agency’s operating budget. Eighty-five percent of the agency’s operating budget goes directly toward operating New York’s 213 state parks and historic sites. The agency has already eliminated 1,000 permanent seasonal workers. Last year’s budget cuts resulted in service reductions at 100 state parks and historic sites (shortened seasons and reduced hours of operation). State parks received 56 million visitors in 2009, an increase of 1.9 million visitors from 2008. State parks provide affordable, close to home recreational opportunities to more than 56 million people each year. Park revenues account for a third of the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation’s (OPRHP) operating budget. State parks account for only one quarter of 1 percent of the overall state budget.

Each year at the National Ice Cream Retailers Association’s annual convention, awards of excellence are presented to deserving retailers from across the United States, Canada and other countries. Sno Top of Manlius has been awarded a ribbon for six years in a row for its outstanding ice cream, which is judged for color, texture, taste and bacterial count. To top its already outstanding reputation, Sno Top will begin a new program to recycle all its foam products, including cups and dishes. The Manlius landmark, which is beginning its 53rd year in business, is now open daily for the spring and summer season.

Predmore talks sales tax Fayetteville resident Paul Predmore is one of three attorneys from Green & Seifter Law Firm to recently conduct a seminar at the Greater Syracuse Chamber of Commerce on avoiding sales tax penalties, late payment fees and criminal prosecution. The topic has been brought to the forefront as New York state increases its investigations and audits of businesses to recover unpaid or delinquent sales tax. Legislative changes to the Tax Law enacted in 2009 now mean that the cost of falling behind in sales tax obligations has risen substantially.

Sean Foran, a project manager at Heuber-Breuer Construction, said the garden design would have minimal impact on the East Genesee Street senior center location. Corporate sponsorships will drive the bulk of the construction costs, Foran said. Ristau first came to the village last May with the idea of creating the garden to memorialize parents who have died of cancer. Her father, Michael Ristau,

died in 2005, and she admittedly had a difficult time dealing with his death. “There is no calm and soothing place (in this village) where a person can just go and sit, she said last May. “This will be for the whole community. Since then, she has gathered community support and secured services from business including Heuber-Breuer, Dalpos Architects and O’Brien & Gere. Olson said he and the trustees would visit the proposed location prior to an upcoming board meeting.

She spent another two years as an outpatient at St. Camillus, attending exercise classes three times a week. Consequently, Rankin suffers from memory loss – she doesn’t remember anything about the accident, nor does she recall events that took place up to three years before. She’s just now able to recognize herself in pictures. She’s improving her balance and also takes singing lessons to strengthen her voice. “Her soft palette in the back of her mouth doesn’t shut down when she wants to talk as opposed to when she wants to breathe,â€? Bill said. “She has trouble getting air out of her mouth when she talks. It comes through her nose.â€? Prior to the accident, Amy played the clarinet, involved herself in clubs and was a natural athlete who ran track and played basketball and field hockey. “I was busy,â€? she said. During alumnae weekend at Dickenson College, she played a game of field hockey with the permission of her physical therapist, Kathy Walsh – so long as she wore a helmet. “It was awesome,â€? she said enthusiastically. “I miss it.â€? In spite of her physical limitations and continuous therapies, Amy still keeps active. She is a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and takes aerobic classes twice a week. Since July, she has been writing an autobiography she hopes to have published so she can help other families dealing with similar situations. “It doesn’t bother me,â€? she said about sharing her story with others. In fact, Amy, who, as a sixth grade social studies teacher, taught emotionally disturbed children, now wants to be a counselor to help caregivers and others with TBI. “I go to this day program here in Auburn, and I see people who have brain injuries ‌ and they just kind of give up,â€? she said. “It ’s hard to see.â€? “She wanted to get well,â€? TBI Waiver Traumatic Brain Injury Waiver is a governmentrun, statewide program that helps families and individuals with TBI. New York, like many other states, has found that it ’s much less expensive to provide services for brain injured people at home, instead of at an institution. Eligibility depends on the person and their home situations. For instance, a person must qualify for Medicaid, which for Amy was immediate since she suddenly became unemployed. Medical staff comes to the house to evaluate the person with TBI, and make safety modifications to the home – which are fully funded through the program. For Amy, an aid and an independent living skills trainer visit at least once a week. “This is a beautiful program because it allows

someone the ability to be home with their family without the financial hardship of these modifications, Amy wrote in a chapter of her autobiography. “It was a blessing to us.

Understanding TBI Traumatic Brain Injury is defined as a biochemical insult to the brain that was caused by an external force. Injuries can be mild and transient or severe and life-threatening, such as the case with Amy. In severe cases, TBI can be fatal or result in significant and even permanent changes to neurocognitive functioning. “Depending on what parts of the brain were most affected by the trauma, impairments in speech, memory, attention and other cognitive processes can occur, said Dr. James Mikesell of St. Camillus Health & Rehabilitation Center. “At times there can be dramatic changes in mood, personality and alterations to the sleep-wake cycle as well. Since severe cases of TBI are caused by accidents, Mikesell said the most effective step in prevention is common safety precautions, such as the use of seatbelts, child safety seats and wearing helmets when using motorcycles, bicycles, in-line skates and even skiing. One of the most effective methods of preventing TBI in the elderly is to modify common living areas to prevent falls.

Who are most at risk for TBI? A number of demographic factors determine the risk for TBI, such as age, gender, ethnicity, substance use, previous TBI and other socioeconomic variables, Mikesell said. “Individuals age 15 to 24 are at the greatest risk for TBI, and males outnumber females about 2:1, he added. “The Mayo Clinic reported that individuals who experienced an initial TBI are about three times

more at risk for another TBI, and that the risk of a third TBI after the second may be as much as eight times greater. St. Camillus Health & Rehabilitation Center provides treatment for patients who typically have had a more severe TBI, many of whom arrive from an acute care hospital to the 20-bed Inpatient Brain Injury Rehabilitation program. Others receive services in the Day Health or Outpatient Brain Injury program. Services are provided by a multidisciplinary team, Mikesell said, adding the rate at which a patient will recover or improve after TBI depends on the severity of the injury, as well as other factors such as age or the presence of other medical conditions. Mikesell said families are an integral part in the treatment of TBI and should be as involved as possible. “Involvement can take the form of visits, professional case consultation, participation in family meetings and attending various therapies, he said. “Family members can help the treatment team better understand their loved one, and should also work to become close collaborators with the multidisciplinary treatment team in order to better understand the goals and expectations for treatment and for discharge. For more information on TBI, visit the National Institute of Health and the Centers for Disease Control at ninds.nih.gov/disorders/tbi/tbi.htm and cdc.gov/TraumaticBrainInjury/index.html. J-D beaten again in Federation hoops final By Rob Jonas jonasr@spotlightnews.com

It was a fourth quarter unlike any other for the Jamesville-DeWitt boys basketball team, and the Red Rams hope it’s one they never see again. J-D missed every shot it took over the last eight minutes, which helped

Buffalo private school Nichols pull away for a 65-43 victory in Saturday’s Federation Class A championship game at the Glens Falls Civic Center. “You couldn’t have told me in a hundred years that they’d get shut out in a quarter,” J-D head coach Bob McKenney said. It wasn’t that the Red

Rams (25-1) took bad shots in the fourth quarter. The ball simply refused to go through the basket. Several shots started to go through the rim and then bounced back out. Other shots were either a hair too hard or a hair too soft. In all, J-D took 21 shots from the field in the fourth

quarter and came away with nothing, which led to its second consecutive loss in the Federation final. “For the second year in a row, we picked the wrong night to have our worst game of the season,” said McKenney. Nichols (24-7) was only too happy to take advan-

tage of J-D ’s shooting woes. The Vikings scored 16 points in the fourth quarter to turn what had been a close game into a blowout. “Our hats are off to them,” McKenney said. They’re playing their best basketball right now, and they deserved to win,”

ond quarter. Then J-D received a break when Nichols was called for a foul, and Vikings’ head coach Greg Plumb was given a technical foul for yelling at the referee. That gave the Red Rams four free throws and the ball back. But it didn’t turn out well. Zach Firestone -- the one who was fouled on the play -- missed both of his free throws. Then, Lamar Kearse missed both technical foul shots. To top it off, the Red Rams turned the ball over on the ensuing possession. Though it stayed close throughout the remainder of the second quarter and the entire third quarter, J-D never took the lead away from Nichols. “We just couldn’t get over the hump,” McKenney said. “I felt that if we could have gotten the lead, we would be OK. But we could never do it.” Part of that had to do with Nichols’ big trio of forward Will Regan and guards Ronald Canestro and Stan Wier. Any time J-D got within a possession of tying or taking the lead, Regan, Canestro or Wier would hit a shot to give the Vikings some breathing room. Canestro -- who missed Nichols’ 71-66 loss to J-D late in January at Onondaga Community College -- led the Vikings with 23 points, five assists and three steals. “We knew he (Canestro) was good,” McKenney said. “ He was their most athletic guard.” Regan -- named the tournament’s MVP -- contributed 21 points and 12 rebounds, and also did a good job defending J-D sophomore center Dajuan Coleman, who scored all 12 of his points in the first half. Wier added 17 points for Nichols one night after dropping 33 points on Long EB-18 NOTICE OF FORMATION Notice of Formation of 7271 State Fair Blvd LLC. Arts. of Org. filed with Secy. of State of N.Y. Island Lutheran in last Friday’s semifinal round. Tyler Cavanaugh netted 11 points, and Firestone added nine points for J-D. Seven of Firestone’s nine points came during an 11-0 run in the third quarter that pulled the Red Rams within three points of Nichols before everything went cold. All through the season, Coleman, with his 6-9 height and wide body, had come to own the paint, and never more so than in Friday’s Federation semifinal, where the Red Rams beat Bedford Academy by a score of 67-54. Both Coleman and Kearse finished with 23 points. But Coleman tacked on an astonishing 31 rebounds, a singlegame Federation tournament record, as he constantly prevented Bedford, the Brooklyn-based champions of New York’s Public School Athletic League, from establishing any inside presence. J-D was in full control against Bedford, bolting out to a 19-8 first-quarter lead. Nursing that margin the rest of the half, the Rams were up 35-28 at the break. Bedford closed within five, 45-40, late in the third period, but Coleman grabbed every possible board, giving J-D more possessions as it used a 12-1 run early in the fourth quarter to get clear. Kinsey, with seven points, and Mitchell, who had six points, gave Coleman and Kearse the most help, but it set up a Federation final that J-D clearly worried about. J-D still has its third consecutive state public school title and a stellar record to celebrate this season, but McKenney admitted it will be hard to put that fourth quarter aside. “In a few weeks, we’ll be able to reflect back and appreciate what we did, but right now it’s hard,” he said.

Cr osswor d Solution

If you love a bit of spice in your life, add a pinch of Cayenne pepper or a dash of hot sauce to the mayonnaise in this recipe. INGREDIENTS: • 454 g (1 lb) minced, raw turkey • 125 ml (1/2 cup) breadcrumbs • 1 egg • 60 ml (1/4 cup) onions, thinly sliced • Salt and pepper to taste • 125 ml (1/2 cup) tomatoes, diced • 4 strips bacon, cooked and diced • 125 ml (1/2 cup) old cheddar cheese, grated • 4 hamburger buns • 4 lettuce leaves • 125 ml (1/2 cup) mayonnaise • 125 ml (1/2 cup) fried onions (optional)

DIRECTIONS: Mix the first five ingredients just enough to bind them together. Don’t manipulate them too much. Set aside. In a bowl, mix the tomatoes, the bacon and the cheese. Divide the turkey mixture in four equal portions and form into patties. Make a hole in the centre of each burger and fill with a quarter of the tomato mixture. Close up the hole so that the stuffing is enclosed by the meat. Flatten the burgers gently. Grill or pan-fry the burgers for 7 or 8 minutes on each side, or until the meat is cooked through (the temperature in the middle should reach 80 ºC (175 ºF). Place the burgers on the bread buns and garnish with the lettuce leaves, mayonnaise and fried onions. Recipe and photo: Chicken Farmers of Canada, www.chicken.ca, with more than 500 recipes.
