More than 120 eighth-graders from Christian Brothers Academy not only learned about history, they helped to make it, as they visited Gettysburg, Penn. in early October. This year’s trip was especially significant as it marked the 20th year CBA social studies teacher Laurine Feldmeth brought a group of students

from CBA to the site of the largest battle ever fought on this continent. In honor of her 20th trip, the students presented Feldmeth with a print of the Battle of Gettysburg, complete with signatures from all the students who attended this year. A complement to the eighth grade U.S. history curriculum, the two-day adventure

included a visit to the new Gettysburg Welcome Center, a tour of the Gettysburg Museum and a viewing of a cyclorama painting of the battle. Other highlights included a ghost tour of the village and the chance to re-enact Pickett’s Charge on the battlefield. A few hours of games, go-carts and shopping rounded out the trip.

been transferred to the town of DeWitt where Serafin is scheduled to appear before Judge Robert Jokl at 6 p.m. Wednesday Nov. 3. The village attorney typically acts as prosecutor for cases involving village law offenses, but the Onondaga County District Attorney’s office rescinded its authorization to the village and has instead assigned Chief Assistant District Attorney Alison Fineberg to the case.

Fayetteville officials were given a peek on the progress of the fire department’s station and came away eager to show it off to the community. Mayor Mark Olson and trustees toured the facility prior to the board’s Oct. 18 meeting. Sean Foran of Hueber-Breuer Construction Co. and Chief Paul Hildreth accompanied the board. The building project has turned a few heads as contractors build the fire department’s new home. Afterwards, Olson said he would like to open the building in the foreseeable future for a supervised public tour. Then, he said, maybe the public perception on the building size would change. F-M ABC to honor Anaren, Barbara Sutton Local chapter to hold second gala dinner, award ceremony By Tami S. Zimmerman tzimmerman@cnylink.com The Fayetteville-Manlius A Better Chance program, a not-for-profit organization that aims to increase educational opportunities for high school-aged minority girls, is celebrating its 36th anniversary this year. Its second gala dinner and award ceremony will be held Nov. 6 at the DoubleTree Hotel in East Syracuse and will honor East Syracusebased Anaren, Inc. for its yearly community service contributions. It will also recognize one of F-M ABC’s co-founders Barbara Sutton for her consistent involvement with the local chapter since 1974. Sutton is currently finishing her latest term as the Board of Trustees president and continues to serve on several committees. Sutton had initially heard about the national A Better Chance program through her alma mater, Mount Holyoke College, but didn’t get involved until the national director of ABC’s community school programs visited the F-M area and spoke at St. Ann’s Church in Manlius. A steering committee was formed in 1973 and the first Board of Directors in 1974. Sutton said the group was thrilled that the F-M community and excellent school system could become a part of a successful, innovative national program.

Eagle Bulletin Editor Tami S. Zimmerman interviewed Sutton about her commitment to a program that Sutton describes as a huge part of her life. Since its inception, more than 70 students have graduated and moved on to excel in both college and careers.

What does F-M ABC mean to you? F-M ABC means opportunity. Our scholars are ambitious and talented, but they need a challenging school environment and the academic and emotional support that our program has to oer. It also means community. Over 36 years there have been so many people involved in F-M ABC: teachers, counselors and administrators at F-M High School; board members, host families and sta members. Individual contributors, churches and businesses have supported the program financially. People in the community have volunteered for our fundraisers, have driven the scholars to to their dance or music lessons or to the bus for vacation, and have worked on the house cleaning, painting, raking and weeding. Personally, it has been a joy to be involved with this program and to have watched our 72 alumnae graduate from F-MHS, enter and graduate from college and, often graduate school, and become successful in their chosen careers. I love seeing how they scholars grow and mature in the four years they are with us. In what ways does this program most beneďŹ t its students? the F-M community? The scholars benefit because they are able

They learn from our excellent teachers, they participate in the myriad of extracurricular activities available to them at F-MHS, they broaden their horizons to discover new worlds of opportunity. In the ABC program itself, the scholars benefit from the support of dedicated board, sta and host families as well as all the folks in the community who donate and participate in many different ways. The F-M community is enriched by the presence of A Better Chance scholars. Their dedication to becoming the best students they can be is inspiring to F-M students. After all, ABC scholars

have left home at the age of 14 in order to pursue an excellent education and further their goals. What an impressive, brave decision for young girls to make and what courageous parents to encourage their daughters to go away from home for high school because of the opportunities available. ABC scholars enrich their classes by their very presence and participation. They help make F-M High School a better place. The gala dinner will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday Nov. 6 at the DoubleTree Hotel in East Syracuse. If you are interested in attending or supporting the F-M ABC program, contact Pam Steele at 682-8497.

Village holds groundbreaking ceremony for new park After years of anticipation, the village of Fayetteville will soon be home to the Canal Landing Park. Village oďŹƒcials, former Mayor Marian Loosmann and a host of state representatives gathered Oct. 22 to break ground at the site of a new park that will provide a playground area, biking/hiking trails, a shelter pavilion and a bathroom facility. The village has entered into a long-term lease with the state department of Parks and Historic Preservation for the 10-acre park in lower Fayetteville on the former Department of Transportation site. Mayor Mark Olson said the groundbreaking marks more than three decades of diligent work from several administrations. He noted then-Mayor Russell Parnell first inquired about the use of the land in September 1977. Olson dedicated the park to all of the village mayors that

had worked on project. This spring, representatives from Stearns & Wheler met several times with the village board to map out the designs for the park. The $500,000 project is funded through two state grants. The village DPW will maintain the grounds. Tim Simpson Construction of Chenango Forks was awarded the project at the village board’s Sept. 13 meeting. Olson said work will begin immediately. Others attending the ceremony included town Supervisor Ed Theobald, village trustees Dan Kinsella, Mike Small and Mary Coleman, village clerk Lorie Corsette, State Sen. David Valesky, Assemblyman Al Stirpe, former Assemblyman Je Brown, and Robert Hiltbrand, NYS OďŹƒce of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation regional director. Keep your little ghouls and goblins safe

Halloween comes just once a year and we want to make sure you celebrate responsibly. As one of the world’s oldest holidays, Halloween has transitioned from a religious event where the dead are believed to roam the earth to a time for children to beg for treats on their neighbors’ front stoops and an excuse for adults to dress up and go out for a night of fun. Parents, we urge you to remind your children to stay safe this year as they go off to collect treats. Here are some simple tips to ensure a trick, or tragedy, free Halloween: • Accompany younger children to the door of every home they approach and make sure parents and guardians are familiar with every home and all people from which the children receive treats. • Teach children to never approach a home that is not well lit, both inside and out. • Teach children to stay alert for any suspicious incidents and report them to parents, guardians or the proper authority. • Be sure older children take a friend with them and younger children are accompanied by a trusted adult. • Teach children to never enter a home without prior permission from their parents or guardians. • Teach children to never approach a vehicle, occupied or not, unless they are accompanied by a parent or guardian. • Make sure all children wear reflective clothing and carry a glow stick when out at dusk and at night. • Make sure children are able to see and breathe properly and easily when using facial masks. All costumes and masks should be clearly marked as flame resistant. • Teach children if anyone tries to grab them to make a scene; loudly yell “This person is not my father/mother/guardian”; and make every effort to get away by kicking, screaming and resisting. We wish you all a happy and safe Halloween! — Tips courtesy of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and TOPS Friendly Markets.

‘Coach from Warsaw’ first in new trilogy By Tami S. Zimmerman tzimmerman@cnylink.com

Author Irene Magers new novel,“Coach from Warsaw,” is the first book in a trilogy about a family dynasty that begins in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It begins with a fairly happy-go-lucky bachelor who can’t help but fall in love with a young woman he encounters one wintry night but doesn’t see again – or formally meet – for another long year. The story unfolds with two sets of characters located in different, distant countries: Dr. Herman Zache and his daughter Dorrit, a Russian family of modest means, and German noble Baron Johann Von Renz and his entourage. Zache, an anxious physicianturned-educator with deteriorating health, is constantly on the move for reasons the author doesn’t disclose until midway through the book. Dorrit adores her loving father and attributes his odd behavior to the sadness that has consumed him since the untimely death of her mother. The twosome move from czarist Russia to Poland and

ultimately to Berlin via coach, where Dr. Zache eventually reveals his haunting past. Baron Johann Von Renz, a wealthy but bored bachelor, moves from the rural countryside to the capital of Germany to challenge himself with a career in medicine. The baron and Dr. Zache meet at the university where the two develop a relationship of mutual respect, resulting in the eventual marriage of Von Renz to Dorrit. Social dances, formal gatherings and meetings with the German count, kaiser and other courtiers become a routine lifestyle for the newly betrothed, unassuming girl, with striking red hair and brilliant green eyes. She is a threat to other women who have their eye on Von Renz, but a delight to the gentleman of the court who are drawn not only by her beauty but her knowledge of subjects such as art and politics. Dr. Zache had compensated his daughter’s lack of a dowry with the endowment of an impressive education. Magers weaves in historical events, as well as humor and evocative detail for a colorful portrait of life of fin de siècle Germany. Readers will grow to

The second and third books in the trilogy, “Night Crossing to Athens,” and “Last Train from Berlin,” respectively, are also available.

Wondering about

Reading deep into the Tea Party’s cup By Ellen Leahy

The political movement called “The Tea Party” has nothing do to with brewed leaves and crumpets. Instead it is a group of concerned citizens. From my estimation many in this movement were once, or are still, registered Republicans. But that is beside the point, except that Tea Party people scream conservative sensibilities, something that doesn’t often simmer well with Democrats. The Tea Party’s roots took hold out of frustration during the Bush II presidency, but the Obama presidency has fertilized the group’s desire for smaller, less intrusive government. My experience with the Tea Party was on the ground at the Federal Building covering rallies as a journalist with the City Eagle. Smaller government should translate into LESS TAXES. Tea Partiers know that the United States government hasn’t shrunk in a very long time, whether the GOP or the Dems have been at the helm. Tea Partiers don’t mind paying taxes, as long as this money is being managed wisely. Here in New York, we all, must know – that our money is not being managed well. The Tea Party is big on maintaining freedom for all Americans; and is extremely involved and supportive of

our armed forces. It also supports a solid education for all U.S. citizens. What it doesn’t support is a free ride, especially for non-citizens. If you want to live and work in America, go through the proper channels. The original Tea Party, where the tea was tossed into Boston Harbor to steep, was concerned with representation in government. Basically, “if you want our taxes, we have to have representatives telling you (England) what to do with our (colonists) money.” Well, now the United States of America has its very own government with plenty of representatives, but many of its citizens, and most of its Tea Party members, do not feel as if their wishes in regard to the spending of the tax dollars are being carried out. Conservatives are not mean, uncaring folks. Instead, many give lots to charity and are active volunteers. It’s just that they would like to make the decision of what to do with their extra income. They don’t want to see their hard earned money squandered by a poorly managed, self-serving agency that does little to help the people it serves. Who would? Conservatives feel that one should reap the rewards of one’s own hard work; and be able to decide what to do with that extra money. Don’t blame the Tea Party, the incumbents, the Republicans, the Democrats or even The Rent Is Too Damn High Party. Instead, study an individual’s record. Go to their See Tea Party, page 5

“The overwhelming comment on the street is that it is absolutely gargantuan,â€? Olson said. “I get it from everyone,â€? he said. In detailing the building’s layout from storage, oďŹƒce, training and meeting space, Olson said the building is functional. “When you really break it down it’s not a huge building,â€? Olson said. “It looks big but it’s not gargantuan.â€? He added, “It’s hard to explain that to people.â€? The fire chief said he would favor a public tour when the timing is right. “I’m not opposed to it at all,â€? Hildreth said. “But I’m not even bringing in the membership until it’s more defined and safe.â€? The construction progress, he said, might allow the village to hold an open house near the annual tree lighting celebration after Thanksgiving that kicks o the holiday season.

Foran said rooms could be labeled and floors could be lined to guide tourists through the building. “We’ve done it before, he said. “It’s not a problem. As far as the progress, Foran is encouraged the building will be enclosed on schedule over the coming weeks. The roofing is scheduled for installation Nov. 15 through 19. The brickwork is tentatively scheduled for completion in the first week of December. The windows will then be installed. The milestone dates are on schedule, Foran said. The end date is May 3. “I think we’re making pretty good progress, he said. Foran will return to the board for another progress report next month. F-M High School German Teacher Kate Stewart has won the state’s highest award for foreign language teaching. The New York State Association of Foreign Language Teachers honored Frau Stewart with its Ruth E. Wasley Distinguished Teacher Award K-12. The award was presented Oct. 16 at NYSAFLT’s annual conference in Rochester. The organization awards only one Wasley award each year, said NYSAFLT Executive Director John Carlino. “It’s kind of like the New York State foreign teacher of the year award,” he said. F-M High School French teacher Denise Mahns led the effort to nominate Stewart for the prize. Other teachers, administrators, former students and parents of students also wrote letters in support. “Kate is really an inspiration to all of us,” Mahns said. “She is really the most dedicated teacher I know, hands down.” Stewart is “plugged in” with technology and regularly shares her discoveries with colleagues, Mahns said. She’s also creative in developing new ways of teaching on her own, she said. “She spends a lot of time coming up with great ideas to teach her students,” Ms. Mahns said. “I have relied on her very heavily for ideas for teaching AP.” Frau Stewart said she has tremendous respect for the previous recipients of the Wasley Award, and she is honored to be among them. “It’s really nice to have colleagues acknowledge my efforts,” Stewart said. “It’s an affirmation that the work I do is worthwhile.”

For her, the best part of being a teacher is seeing her students succeed. “Taking kids to Europe and watching them interact, witnessing their excitement about using the language, that’s the most gratifying thing,” she said. Stewart has been teaching German for 19 years, including the last eight at F-M. She is active with American Association of Teachers of German, currently serving as vice president of its Central New York Chapter. Fayetteville-Manlius schools and the union representing its teachers have agreed to a new one-year contract that will raise salaries 2 percent next school year. That salary increase is half of what previous contracts called for, and is tied as the lowest scheduled salary increase among OCM BOCES school districts. F-M teacher annual salary increases had been 4.25 percent starting in 2003 and 4 percent starting in 2008. The lower salary increase in the new contract will save the district more than $500,000 in the 2011-12 school year, said Assistant Superintendent for Business Services Michael Vespi. That savings equates to 1 per-

cent of the district’s tax levy, he said. The contract also calls for new teacher evaluations, as set forth in new state law. All other aspects of the new contract were carried over from the previous contract. The contract went to the Fayetteville-Manlius Teachers’ Association Oct. 13. Of those who voted, more than 98 percent voted in favor, according to Kelly Fletcher, president of the union and a kindergarten teacher at Mott Road Elementary School. “We work in a great district,” Fletcher said. “Based on our vote, it was clear that the membership felt that the emphasis this year needed to be on saving money. This contract should help the district retain our solid educational program and maintain our student-to-teacher ratio.”

The F-M School Board unanimously ratified the contract at its Oct. 18 meeting. F-M Superintendent Corliss Kaiser said the contract is the product of a solid working relationship between the union and the district. She praised the efforts of the lead negotiators, Fletcher and Assistant Superintendent for Personnel Jeff Gordon. “These two worked together to come up with a contract that respects the values and needs of both our taxpayers and our teachers,” Kaiser said. “Thanks to their leadership, this contract will help make our district stronger.” Chris Iven is the communications specialist for the Fayetteville-Manlius School District.

The new ‘light’ in Manlius By Caitlin Donnelly

Manlius welcomes a new restaurant to the village this month, with the opening of Lumiere Bistro. Located at 315 Fayette St. in the Manlius Mart Plaza, the restaurant oers an eclectic variety of entrees, from classic French dishes to pasta to shrimp. “When you go out, not everyone [in the group] wants to have the same type of food, so there are dierent plates to choose from on the menu,â€? said owner Scott O’Connell. O’Connell, 42, of Liverpool, has been in the restaurant business since high school, when he started out waiting tables at a catering hall. After a 14-year hiatus while he worked in insurance, he returned to the restaurant business by enrolling in the Culinary Institute of America, where he honed his cooking skills and graduated in 2004. O’Connell worked in a number of high-end establishments in Central New York before deciding to open his own restaurant. He chose Manlius for the location because he felt the restaurant’s atmosphere would appeal to local residents. “The restaurant has a cozy, warm atmosphere where you can come for any occasion, whether it is a romantic first date, or you’re getting a babysitter and just getting away for a little while,â€? O’Connell said. “I’m going for the feel of

a bistro you might find nestled in a brownstone near NYU in New York City.â€? The restaurant seats 26, and will serve a variety of wines to be specially paired with foods once the liquor license is approved. In the future, O’Connell plans on bringing in live music for customer entertainment. O’Connell said although it has been stressful finalizing details and dealing with vendors, there are many things that make the opening of his own restaurant worthwhile. “Having my own place is great, although I haven’t had a minute to sit down and take it in and be like, ‘Wow, this is pretty cool’ just yet,â€? he said with a laugh. O’Connell also said he finds it rewarding to see customers enjoy the dishes he personally prepares in the kitchen. His favorite dish: the sautĂŠed chicken breast with wild mushroom risotto, with crème brulee or tiramisu for dessert. While the restaurant opened its doors on Oct. 15, an oďŹƒcial grand opening celebration will not take place until late November. Lunch is served at Lumiere Bistro from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. Dinner is from 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, 5 to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Brunch is served 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sundays. For more information, visit lumierebistro.com.

‘The Flower Lady’ Sr. Rose Bill of Holy Cross Church publishes first children’s book By Tami S. Zimmerman tzimmerman@cnylink.com A floral blanket of gladiolas, poppies, carnations and sky-high sunflowers for years graced the gardens of longtime Liverpool resident Helen Bielec. She also cultivated her own vegetable garden, growing tomatoes and peppers, and picked ripe berries from her raspberry bush. Over the years, Bielec was known to give away countless bouquets and baskets full of produce to whomever, whenever. Sister Rose Bill, pastoral associate at Holy Cross Church in DeWitt, recently published her first children’s book about the generosity of her former neighbor whom she met about 20 years ago. Bielec became known by many as “The Flower Lady, which Sr. Bill chose as the title of

her book. Bielec, now 90, was pleasantly surprised to learn of this written dedication. “I’m astonished really, she said. “I’m beyond words. I wish I could do more. When Bielec was a little girl, she befriended an older woman who nurtured a beautiful garden that Bielec admired. One day, Bielec asked her new friend if she could pick a flower to bring home for her mother. The woman said no, told her not to come back, and not to touch a single flower. Bielec went home, cried, then decided that when she grew up, she would have a garden of her own to share with others. “And that’s what she used to do, said Sr. Bill, noting Bielec was able to turn a negative experience as a child into a positive, life-giving reason to be good.

“She’d bring vegetables and leave them at somebody’s door. Of if somebody went by and said ‘What a pretty garden, what beautiful flowers,’ she’d give them a bouquet. Sr. Bill is in the process of writing and illustrating a second book about her mother Anna called, “The Cookie Lady. A resident of Liverpool since the mid-1930s, Anna used to make rounds visiting the homebound with trays of cookies she’d make after long days on the family farm. She’d crochet afghans for people to keep them warm and helped one neighbor who had health issues do wash and prepare meals – all gratis, Sr. Bill said. “These people are just little people, we’re all little people, she said. “We’re not great politicians or tycoons or entrepreneurs, yet each person in their

Football Hornets top Liverpool; Baldwinsville next That was the theme Friday night as the undefeated, state Class AA no. 14-ranked Fayetteville-Manlius football team powered past visiting Liverpool 31-7 in the opening round of the Section III Class AA playos. If that score sounds fa-

miliar, well, it is. The Hornets beat the Warriors by that exact same 31-7 margin on that same field seven days earlier. Liverpool, with just a 3-4 record entering the playoffs, was hoping that all the knowledge it gained from that Oct. 15 trip to FM (plus the return of some key players from injuries)

The Hornets’ defense will face its biggest test to date, trying to contain B’ville’s vaunted ground game, featuring sophomore running back Tyler Rouse and a big, imposing oensive line. Moro would later leave the game due to injury - and Liverpool enjoyed a brief revival in the second quarter. Luigi Barletta moved his team to F-M’s 17-yard line, then hit Zavon Watkins in the end zone to cut the Hornets’ lead to 14-7. F-M would not allow anything more, though, its fierce and physical defense turning back every Warrior advance for the rest of the evening. That gave the Hornets plenty of time to put the game away.

But if F-M had any doubts, they were gone by the time fullback Matt Moro, taking a pass from John Wittig at the Warriors’ 25-yard line, rumbled into the end zone in the first quarter, putting the Hornets ahead to stay. Minutes later, F-M was on its own 34- but not for long. Again, Wittig found Moro on a short pass. CBA blasts West Genesee in football playoffs Two long months ago, Christian Brothers Academy’s football team met up with West Genesee in a pre-season scrimmage. In the course of that gathering, the Brothers struggled, and learned plenty about what it still needed to do in order to improve. Just how much CBA had improved became quite evident to the Wildcats when the two sides reunited last Friday night at Alibrandi Stadium in the opening round of the Section III Class AA playos. With big plays on one side and a crunching defense on the other side, the Brothers roared to a 54-6 victory and moved to 8-0 on the season. And with that win, the Brothers advanced to Saturday’s AA semifinal, where it will face Utica Proctor at 4 p.m. at Cicero-North Syracuse’s Bragman Stadium.

The Raiders knocked off long-time rival Rome Free Academy 42-28 in its opening-round game. CBA and Proctor are battling for a spot against Fayetteville-Manlius or Baldwinsville in the Nov. 7 title game in the Carrier Dome. WG, following a 1-4 start, had won its last two games of the regular season to sneak into the playos and, with a potent passing game, carried the belief that it could solve the Brothers’ defensive riddle. But it took just one quarter of play for CBA to dispel any upset plans. On its second possession following a short WG punt, the Brothers moved to the Wildcats’ 31-yard line, where Tyler Hamblin threw long and found Manny Collins, who went the rest of the way for the game’s first touchdown. Tailback Anthony Bunn, in particular, took over. Just

before the first quarter ended, Bunn took a handoff and tore through the Wildcats’ secondary on a 47-yard sprint to the end zone, expanding CBA’s lead to 20-0. Then, in the second period, Bunn scored twice more on long runs - one covering 46 yards, the other going 24 yards. In between all this, WG did get on the board when Naton threw a 61-yard TD pass to Sean Howard, as Howard made several nifty moves on the scoring play. Still, CBA had seized a 34-6 lead at halftime as its oensive line, led by Nick Fusillo, Ben Barrett, Jess Drazek, John Hillenbrand and Homer Davis, dominated the line of scrimmage against the Wildcats. CBA continued to pull away in the third quarter, scoring twice more as Hamblin hit Greg Thomson on a 19-yard scoring pass and found Collins again from 25 yards out just before the

period ended. By the time it was done, the Brothers had amassed 526 yards of oense. Bunn finished with 179 yards on just eight carries, with Mike

Vavonese contributing 115 yards, also on eight carries. Hamblin, who ran for 61 yards, completed eight of 10 passes for 121 yards, while Naton threw 33 times, getting
