Serafin pleads ‘not guilty’

Mayor Mark-Paul Serafin and his Attorney Tom Cerio, of Cerio Law Firm in Syracuse, stood before Judge Robert Jokl Nov. 3 to enter a not guilty plea and accept an arraignment date for Wednesday Jan. 19. This week’s court appearance was related to Serafin’s first charge issued Sept. 21 for violating a Manlius village recycling law, which mandates that county-designated recyclables placed at or near curbs for collection purposes are the property of the village; no one else can collect or pick them up. The mayor was allegedly taking returnables from residents’ blue bins placed outside for trash pick up.

In 2001, St. James Church in Cazenovia was asked to become involved in partnering with a mission church, St. Ives Parish, in the rural village of Thibeau, Haiti. Its response: Yes.
“The first year we raised and sent money but something was tugging at my heart,” said parishioner and retired commercial developer Bob Hood. “I needed to put a face on what was there.” Since his first visit nine years ago, Hood has returned more than 30 times, and mission goals through
partnering have been obtained tenfold. Tens of thousands of dollars have been raised to provide families with safe drinking water; a church, rectory and school (St. Joseph’s) have been built; food and supplies are regularly sent to a local orphanage and students are provided with See Haiti, page 8

Msgr. J. Robert Yeazel, pastor of Holy Cross Church in DeWitt, will receive the 2010 Simon Le Moyne Award, the highest honor given by Le Moyne College, at this year’s annual Founders’ Day Gala. “I am most humbled to receive the Simon Le Moyne Medal,” Yeazel said. “My relationship with the college through the years has always been based on the admiration I have for all that they are doing to educate students
academically as well as spiritually and ethically.” Yeazel was recently appointed by Bishop Robert Cunningham to the post of vicar general, a position where he assists the bishop with the governance of the entire Syracuse Roman Catholic Diocese, which spans seven counties and includes more than 285,000 people. He is also a member on the Le Moyne College Board of Trustees. “Along with hundreds who love the college, I have tried to do my part to support the efforts of all involved,” Yeazel said. “Together we can do a million
times more than any of us individually and thus I am accepting this honor on behalf of my fellow trustees past and present who have worked tirelessly to assure a vibrant and blessed future for the college we all love.” The event, to be held at 6:30 p.m. Friday Nov. 19 in the campus’ recreation center, benefits the college’s scholarship programs. Andrew Russo, the Republican candidate for the state senator seat in District 49, ran a tough campaign against incumbent Sen. David Valesky. The career musician pulled in just over 42 percent of the votes, while Valesky took the lead with 57 percent, winning a fourth term in the state Senate. At one point, however, the two opponents were neck and neck in the polls, putting the Democrats on shaky ground for a time. After results were announced at the Liverpool-based Election Night party, Valesky told his sea of supporters that Russo was well-prepared as a newcomer to the political process and looks forward to working with him going forward. Russo said he hasn’t ruled out running for office again, and spoke with the Eagle Bulletin post Election Day on his first-time race. Is there anything about your campaign that you would have done differently? It looks like the only thing we could have done differently was to have to more people the day of the election to physically guide Republicans to the polls. My opponent had a significant field operation in the heavily Democratic parts of the City of Syracuse, which ultimately determined the margin of victory. It is quite hard to run an all-volunteer operation against an operation which enjoys staff paid for by the taxpayers of New York … What’s your next step in the political arena? Do you plan to run again? I very well may. I have developed a great passion for New York State policy during this process and will be keeping a close eye on our government in the next couple of years. Do you have anything you would like to say to Sen. David Valesky? Just what I said on the phone to him on Tuesday night: Congratulations. Consider me a supporter moving forward, because we must work together in order to move New York in the right direction. The people of this state have suffered enough under the dysfunction of these last two years, and it’s time to exchange partisanship for functional government. I hope to help in whatever ways I can. What did you learn most as a political newcomer during your campaign? State Senate campaigns are very serious undertakings. But if you are a good project manager, have a solid knowledge of all the issues and are good at raising money, you can do very well even your first time out!

Celebrate our veterans
World War I, known at the time as “The Great War,” officially ended when the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919. However, fighting ceased seven months earlier when an armistice between the Allied nations and Germany went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. For that reason, Nov. 11, 1918, is generally regarded as the end of “the war to end all wars.” In November 1919, President Wilson proclaimed Nov. 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day with the following words: “To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations…” A legal holiday dedicated to the cause of world peace, this day was celebrated and known as “Armistice Day” as of May 13, 1938. However, after World War II had required the greatest mobilization of soldiers, sailors, Marines and airmen in the Nation’s history, and after American forces had fought aggression in Korea, the 83rd Congress amended the Act of 1938 by striking out the word “Armistice” and inserting in its place the word “Veterans.” With the approval of this legislation on June 1, 1954, Nov. 11 became a day to honor American veterans of all wars. The observance of Veterans Day on Nov. 11, regardless of what day of the week on which it falls, preserves the historical significance of the date and helps focus attention on the important purpose of Veterans Day: A celebration to honor America’s veterans for their patriotism, love of country and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good. Celebrations to honor our veterans will take place across the country this week. While appreciation for our veterans should be shown every day of the year, be sure to take the time to thank those who have protected and continue to protect our freedoms. Political accountability starts at home
To the editor: Since I left Manlius several years ago to attend college down South, my father has periodically kept my roots in check by sending me interesting articles on Syracuse news and happenings. Generally it’s some business article on the expansion (or deflation) of Carousel Mall funding or the unfortunate occurrence of a favorite restaurant closing, but yesterday he passed me an article that really struck home. The article detailed the (absurd) actions of our local mayor who, for the second time in less than two months, was caught violating the village’s recycling regulations by taking bottles and cans out of village residents’ recycle bins. To top it off, the mayor was named in a police report filed by Manlius fire department members for stealing a rack of sausages that the firemen had planned to eat for lunch – or, in police jargon, “recyclable diving à la sausage”. Comical as the article was, what resonated with me after I finished reading was the fact that this man was an elected official. Village residents and taxpayers had actually chosen the freelance graphic designer to “provide for the enforcement of… local laws, rules and regulations and to cause all violations thereof to be prosecuted” (New York State Village Law, Section 4-400, Article B). If Alanis Morissette had yet to finish her hit “Ironic,” this might warrant an entire verse. To be honest, I hardly had any idea what sort of responsibilities the mayor of a New York State village had outside of budgeting, public works, and the like. Furthermore, I wondered how efficiently the roles I did know a mayor was responsible for could be completed by someone with absolutely no financial or management background (who allegedly takes
lunch from local firemen). Thus, I decided to take a bit of time to do some investigative journalism myself. By looking through the New York State village laws, Manlius’ local village laws, and the 2010-11 budget for the village, I was shocked at how many quick budget wins seemed to jump off the balance sheet and how many change program opportunities there were that could save Manlius significant amounts of money – money that could be reinvested to grow and highlight small town businesses, aid in the repayment of municipal bond debt, or go back into our own homes through village tax reductions. Obviously such programs would rest on the shoulders of the chief executive of the village office – the mayoral office. In terms of quick budget saves, there seemed to be excessive spending in questionable areas – two beautification line items (generic “community beautification” and “shade trees”) totaling over $30,000, central data processing costing $23,000 that could potentially be an outsource opportunity, and three grossly overbudgeted and non-descript adult entertainment items (“museum,” “band concerts,” and “adult recreation”) coming in at upwards of $42,000. Furthermore, relative to the standard New York State village staffing requirements, we’re significantly over-booked. New York mandates four trustees for each village – we have six, each of whom make just shy of $7,000 to take part in the committee meetings. New York requires a village clerk and treasurer who may be rolled up into a single headcount – Manlius has three clerk / treasurers, each with full time salaries. The department of public works has nine full time non-specialized laborers salaried on top of the village engineer, village mechanic, working crew leader, and superintendent. Moderate cuts to each of the quick win and staffing opportunities could save upwards of $180,000 – or
over 3 percent of the total budget. If we wanted to talk big save programs (and who doesn’t in the current economic environment), New York State law provides the opportunity to consolidate local fire departments (a $677K line item on the village budget). Furthermore, villages that fall in a township (Manlius) can be consolidated and governed centrally, creating a township-wide balance sheet and decreasing the hierarchal and political barriers involved in getting things done – all while saving money through the centralization’s headcount reconciliation. Yes, these are radical ideas – but they could result in better managed, significantly cheaper services and public works for all of the local residents. Though it’s easy to point fingers at figureheads whose credibility have recently slipped, the revelation I had during this exercise was that the money taxpayers are putting in this man’s hands to provide residential services, maintain our infrastructure, and manage building codes and zones is just as much our responsibility to strategically drive as they are his. If we don’t take the time to see how the money we pay our local municipals is being spent, we have no right to complain. The fact that we the taxpayers elected a man who allows these inefficiencies to flow through the annual budget year after year, and who doesn’t abide by the laws we expect him to police is truly our own fault. My closing message to you is this: when election season rolls in, no matter the size of the stage, take the time to research the repercussions of your decision – you may find that a good choice will not only save you money, but improve the quality of life in your area as well. F-MHS to perform ‘Les Mis’ By Tami S. Zimmerman tzimmerman@cnylink.com More than 100 Fayetteville-Manlius High School students are expected to audition for “Les Miserables,� an award-winning musical celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. “There are students who have already come up to me and said, ‘Oh, I’ve never auditioned but I’ve got to audition for ‘Les Mis,’� said David Brown, music coordinator. “The excitement’s already there,� and tryouts don’t even begin until January. Based on Victor Hugo’s 1862 novel, the show is set in early 19th-century France, and as Brown describes it, an “amazing story of triumph and sacrifice� as characters struggle for redemption and revolution. The anticipated spring production, in contrast with last year’s successful “White Christmas,� is more like an operetta, Brown said. Both he and orchestra conductor Carlos Mendez wanted to give the students an opportunity to perform this musical masterpiece composed by Claude-Michel Schoenberg, with a libretto by Alain Boublil. “It’s the 25th anniversary, and it’s a great show for the orchestra and it’s a great show for women,� said Brown, noting that many shows lack female leads. This show has a 50-plus cast utilizing both genders. “Les Mis� was last performed at F-MHS in 2006 to a standing-room only crowd that spilled into another room. Brown said he hopes for a similar turnout come spring. The production will be held for two weekends, starting at 7 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays April 1 and 2 and April 8 and 9. Cost is $10 per person for reserved seats. Tickets will go on sale sometime in

More than 800 visitors from around Central New York came through the doors at Christian Brothers Academy’s Annual Open House Oct. 31. The event was an opportunity for prospective students and their families to tour the school and find out more about a Lasallian education at CBA. “This was one of the best turnouts in years,� said Admissions Director Holly Dowd. “The Brothers spirit was definitely contagious as families learned more about our challenging academic curriculum, fun extracurricular activities and outstanding athletic programs. Russian educators to visit Manlius Pebble Hill A delegation of Russian educators and school administrators interested in learning about American education will visit Manlius Pebble Hill School Wednesday Nov. 10 during a week-long visit to Central New York. The trip is being sponsored by Open World, a Library of Congress-administered program to facilitate international dialogue. Created in 1999, Open World was initially focused on bringing about exchanges between U.S. and Russian civic and political leaders. The program soon expanded to also include professional exchanges between legal and cultural leaders in Russia and other post-Soviet states. It is now authorized to operate in
any country. The Russian teachers and administrators are interested in a wide variety of education-related issues, including the use of technology in classrooms, immersion language programs, use of the Internet for professional development, community service projects, ethnic tolerance, and regional standards of education. While in Central New York, the Russian delegation will visit a variety of educational models, including colleges and charter, public, and private schools throughout the area. Zimmerman tzimmerman@cnylink.com Goldbug Party business partners Ann Marie Schreiber and Dina DeSorbo want to fill your wallet with money. How, you ask? By purchasing your unwanted gold. “The concept is sort of like the old Tupperware parties but in reverse,� said Schreiber. “Rather than asking people to buy stuff, we give them the opportunity to sell their unwanted gold. Mainly we buy gold jewelry, but we have also purchased dental gold, gold coins and even gold bars.� Basically, someone will decide to host a party. They’ll invite their friends and family and tell them to bring their unwanted gold. Schreiber and DeSorbo then go to the party and set themselves up in a corner with equipment
that weighs and tests the purity of the gold. As guests bring over items, they tell them what the item is worth, and if the guest decides to sell it, a check is written that night. “The price of gold is near its all-time high right now, so half of the fun is seeing the shock on people’s faces when they find out what that broken, old necklace is worth,� said Schreiber, of Manlius. “The proceeds of the party can go to the host, which is the most common arrangement, or they can go to any organization. We have one party coming up where the host will be donating the proceeds to help build the new F-M sports facility.� After the party when all purchases are added, the host gets 10 percent of the total plus a $100 bonus if Goldbug purchased more than $1,000. Schreiber said at an average party, the host makes about $400 but that varies; some

schooling, uniforms and daily meals through annual funding. Hood’s dedication to serve the needs of the Haitian people firsthand has flourished, and an ever-growing coalition called Alliance for Haiti has been established. Numerous individuals and organizations throughout Central New York are contributors in the charge to better the poverty-stricken area: Ruth Colvin of Literacy Volunteers started a literacy program. Dave Eldridge, a Cazenovia dentist, is developing a viable dental program. Local teachers Georgette Schmidt and Karen Dross have traveled to Thibeau to help with teacher training. Park Central Presbyterian Church of Syracuse has funded teacher training, a laptop com-
puter and supplies for St. Joseph’s School. Eastern Hills Bible Church in Manlius has made generous donations to expand the safe water program and the Syracuse Century Club held an auction to help fund future building. Most recently, the United Church of Fayetteville has joined the alliance, with goals to raise funds for a playground at St. Joseph’s School. Its annual Syracuse University Brass and Bells Choir, to be held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday Dec. 12 at the church on East Genesee Street, will benefit Haiti through attendees’ free-will offerings. Hood works closely, too, with iF Foundation, an organization that supports small businesses and agriculture by making micro-loans for start-up costs such as rais-
ing animals, farming and making soap and candles. “We’re trying to create a sustainable, economically sound model for Haitians to take care of themselves as opposed to people sending them money,� said Hood, who frequently brings with him groups of volunteers. “I can see blossoming different disciplines, whether it’s a teacher, a dentist, a carpenter or a plumber going [to Haiti], each one has a gift and a sphere of influence to help this community.� Hood, who just returned from Haiti this week, said he would like to videotape the progress made over the last 10 years, when his first visit revealed nothing more than a large field.

Earlier this year, the village purchased four new cardiac monitors to stock each of the department’s three ambulances and “medicar� (the EMS SUV which is the primary initial response vehicle). Known as LIfePak 15s, these state-ofthe-art cardiac monitors performelectrocardiograms (EKGs or ECGs), provide carbon monoxide and blood
pressure monitoring, provide pulse oximetry and act as automatic external defibrillators. They are integral to advanced life support operations delivered by the Fayetteville Fire Department. The association has a history of providing financial resources to purchases made in support of the fire department’s mission. This recent contribution to the cost of AEDs follow past contributions to the purchase of fire equipment, ambulances and training needs. The Fayetteville Fire Department answers approximately 3,000 calls per year and is staffed with a dedicated cadre of 60 volunteers and 15 career professionals.

J-D girls blast Whitesboro, repeat Class A title By Phil Blackwell pblackwell@cnylink.com
Having waited so long to get that elusive first Section III Class A championship, the Jamesville-DeWitt girls soccer team only had to wait 12 months to get the second. With a ferocious attack that struck early and often to drain out all the suspense about the outcome, the Red Rams dismissed Whitesboro 6-1 Friday night at SUNY-Cortland and earned back-to-back sectional titles. One of the many advantages J-D had going into the final was the experience of playing - and succeeding - in last year’s sectional final, a 4-0 dismissal of East Syracuse-Minoa. Now the Rams behaved in a similar manner, using its speed and skill
to subdue a solid Whitesboro squad that carried a 16-2 record into the title game. Not satisfied with that, J-D increased the margin to 3-0 in the 25th minute, Holmes putting together a spectacular individual effort. The sophomore took the ball 30 or so yards from the net, dribbled and wove around two defenders, and fit a hard, low shot inside the right post. At halftime, it stood 3-0, and it nearly was much more as the RJ-D would play again Tuesday night at West Genesee High School against Section II champion Burnt Hills in the Class A regional playoffs. In all, two regional wins are required for the Red Rams to advance to the Nov. 19-20 state final four in the Cortland/Homer area. In last Tuesday night’s semifinals at Marcellus, the Red Rams met no. 5 seed Cortland and with a steady, relentless effort,
ousted the Purple Tigers 3-0. J-D had already conquered Cortland 2-0 back on Oct. 5, and the Purple Tigers needed overtime just to get past Homer in the Class A quarterfinals. As in that first game, Tessa Devereaux would convert, putting the Red Rams ahead 1-0. For the rest of the half, J-D applied a fair amount of pressure, but could not add to its margin. The Rams started to get a cushion, though, when Devereaux scored again in the second half and fellow forward Jessica Holmes also converted. Meanwhile, Cortland only got a handful of chance against Natalie Mannion, Taryn Dausman, Rene Keller and the rest of J-D’s underrated defense, as Emma Esposito only had to make four saves. F-M girls denied in sectional final again By Phil Blackwell pblackwell@cnylink.com For the second year in a row, the Fayetteville-Manlius girls soccer team stood a single victory away from a Section III Class AA championship, something it hadn’t won since 1996. And once again, the Hornets were denied that crown. After CBA turned back F-M in 2009, it was Baldwinsville’s turn this time, as a late offensive surge pushed the top-seeded Bees past the Hornets 3-1 at SUNY-Cortland last Friday night. F-M, a no. 7 seed, continued its surprising run through the playoffs by going to Chittenango and, with a big second-half
surge, knocking off no. 6 seed Cicero-North Syracuse 4-1. For the Hornets, this was yet another case of sweet payback. When they had last met the Northstars, on Oct. 4 at Swan Pond, it had ended 1-0 in CNS’s favor. But a month later, F-M was a more confident bunch, thanks in large part to its AA quarterfinal upset of no. 2 seed and defending champion CBA, also a 1-0 decision (and revenge for losing the 2009 final to the Brothers). Having played stellar defense to oust CBA, the Hornets again stood up well here. Mollie Caputo, Meghan Kingsley, Marilyn Farrell and the rest of F-M’s back line continued to turn away most of the chances, and Quigley’s improvement continued as she made eight saves, including the top of a penalty kick.

For the Fayetteville-Manlius boys soccer team - especially the veterans that have spent as much as four seasons chasing the dream of a Section III Class AA championship - it really could end no other way. To claim the title, the Hornets (17-0-1) would have to dethrone Baldwinsville, the reigning three-time champions, Monday at Liverpool High School - a direct result of what happened last Wednesday night in the AA semifinals, also played on Liverpool’s new artificial turf. Led by Anthony Restante, who put together a three-goal hat trick, F-M, the no. 1 seed, put away no. 5 seed West Genesee 3-1, the second time in as many games that a single Hornets player was responsible for all the goal-scoring. Joe Mahr got all four goals against Nottingham in the AA quarterfinals on Oct. 29.
Like Mahr, Restante is a senior, hungry to end F-M’s title drought. And he didn’t waste any time hurting the Wildcats, a team the Hornets needed a late rally and overtime to beat 2-1 back on Sept. 22. Just 5:23 into the game, Haile Marr (who had both goals in that comeback win over the Wildcats) was doubleteamed - but he found Restante streaking up the right side. Marr passed it to Restante who, in stride, ripped a shot past WG goalie Dylan Condon into the net. Despite the Hornets dominating the flow of play and rarely letting the Wildcats get too many good opportunities, it remained 1-0 at halfitme, but once the break was over, Restante struck again. Just 1:36 into the second half, on a play similar to the initial goal, Restante again moved down the right side and caught a well-timed pass, this time from Joe Mahr, and again beat Condon. Less than two minutes later, Restante tore through several Wildcat defenders and converted
All this gave F-M time to work through a 0-0 first half. And once Bri Dolan beat Miranda Tanner for the go-ahead goal early in the second half, the Hornets really started to take over. Dolan would add a second goal, while Brenna Kincaid (who had the goal to beat CBA) landed one goal and one assist, and Baynes also found the net. Sarah Rosenbaum added an assist. The finals loss to B’ville meant that the Hornets finished with a 14-4-2 record. And it will see 10 seniors, including Caputo, Kincaid, Baynes, Dolan, Kingsley, Farrell and Morgan Same, depart, though the presence of Quigley, Rosenbaum, Cheyenne Hall, Marri Ryu, Alessandra Armstrong and Alexis Muraco should keep the Hornets dangerous in 2011. The Bees got a goal from Dan Knight with 3:59 left in regulation before Mike Guardino hit the winning goal in OT. That mirrored what had happened the last time F-M and B’ville met - on Oct. 13, at Swan Pond, where it was the Hornets down late in regulation, then rallying to win 2-1 as Brian Ward and Joe Mahr converted in the waning minutes. More drama would await Monday, where once again FM wanted a sectional title - and once again, B’ville wanted to keep it from them.

One goal - that’s how it often works in soccer. Get that single shot in the net, and good things might happen. Maybe great ones. And nothing felt greater for the Jamesville-DeWitt boys soccer team than finding out that a single goal delivered, for the first time, a Section III Class A championship as it beat defending champion New Hartford 1-0 Saturday night at Morrisville State College. Under the patient, calm guidance of veteran head coach Joe Roach (who finally won his first title after 35 years in the coaching ranks), J-D, the no. 1 seed, avenged last year’s 2-0 defeat to those same Spartans in this same sectional final, and did so with a formula that has worked all season long. So J-D is, at long last, a sectional champion. Now it awaits the winner of the Section II/X game for next
weekend’s regional final, where a berth in the Nov. 20-21 state final four in Middletown is on the line. Defending its top seed in last Wednesday night’s Class A semifinal at West Genesee High School, the Rams needed a late goal from Anthony Epifani to squeak past no. 4 seed East Syracuse-Minoa 1-0. As neighbors and rivals within the OHSL Freedom division, J-D and ESM were quite familiar with each other. They played twice in the regular season, and both times the Red Rams won, by a 3-0 margin on Sept. 14, then a 1-0 margin on Oct. 19. The third encounter matched the second, in that both sides battled through a scoreless first half. ESM’s defense, led by Ryan Dadey, Nick Capriotti, Josh Stuper and Emir Advakovic, tied up Zander El Hindi, Jimmy Fazio and the rest of J-D’s attackers. At the same time, though, Kopp, Aziz, Canfield and the rest of the Rams’ back line proved so effective containing the Spartans that goalie Zach Tanner only hade to make
one save. Well into the second half, it remained 0-0, and J-D wasn’t getting all that many chances. But with 10:50 left, Anthony Epifani, who only had one goal all season, took a pass from Williams and fired the ball past ESM goalie Casey Sullivan to give the Rams a lead it would not relinquish. ESM finished its season with a mark of 11-7, and sees nine seniors, including Dadey and Stupor, depart, though the return of a solid core of players should mean another winning mark in 2011. J-D, by beating these Spartans, earned another shot at the other Spartans from New Hartford, who prevailed 2-0 in last year’s sectional title game during a run to the state finals. But it would turn out different this time – and Roach, who had sent three previous J-D teams to the championship round without success, could celebrate a title at last. MPH fights way to Class C soccer title By Phil Blackwell pblackwell@cnylink.com Manlius-Pebble Hill’s climb back to the top of the Class C ranks has reached a successful conclusion. When hen Baird Hansen scored in overtime of Saturday night’s Class C title game at Morrisville State College, it gave the Trojans a 2-1 victory over reigning champion Cooperstown in a thriller where all the scoring took place after halftime. The win moved MPH’s long-time head coach, Don Ridall, to 499 career wins. That milestone 500th victory could come in next Saturday’s Class C regional finals against Section IV champion Marathon, who beat Spencer Van Etten 3-1 in its sectional final. Through a tense, 0-0 first half against Cooperstown, neither side could convert, the Redskins resorting to a physical bland of play to try to throw MPH off its rhythm. Then, barely a minute into the second half, Matthew Pink-Burton got open near the net and nudged a shot past Trojans goalie Jordan Gentile.
Rarely had MPH trailed this season, but it didn’t stay there for long, thanks to post-season hero Mike Kardjian. In the 52nd minute, a Cooperstown handball led to a free kick and Kardjian, from at least 30 yards out, drilled a shot that fit inside the post, tying it 1-1. All through the late stages of regulation, both teams had real chances to move in front. With 4:30 left, the Trojans watched in horror as the Redskins’ Michael Howley flashed open, with Gentile out of position and the net open. But Howley hit it too hard, and MPH lived on. Now it all rode on a pair of 15-minute, sudden-victory overtime periods. With 2:36 left in the first OT, Kardjian, from the left side, found Jun Lee, and Lee quickly gave it to a wide-open Hansen, who put home the championship-winning goal. MPH had to subdue no. 5 seed Sauquoit Valley in its semifinal at Chittenango High School’s turf, where Kardjian’s post-season heroics continued in a 1-0 victory over the Indians that was the 498 th win for Ridall.
All through the opening minutes, the Indians attacked hard, with five quick shots, all of which missed the mark, plus a Baird Hansen chance where he just missed the net. The game settled down and, though MPH continued to spend large amounts of time in Sauquoit’s end, it remained 0-0 going into the break, and stayed scoreless deep into the second half. Any time the Trojans got close, Indians goalie Evan Owens kept denying them, finishing with 20 saves and threatening to send the contest to overtime. But with 10 minutes left in regulation, Kardjian struck again. He had put up two goals and two assists, all in the second half, to lead MPH past Bishop Grimes 4-0 in the quarterfinals. Now, he took a pass from Hansen and struck a low, spinning shot past a diving Owens into the net. That proved the game-winner, and the Trojans could now look ahead to Cooperstown – where it had to fight hard again to reclaim that sectional banner.

Playing through and across woodlands, meadows and wetlands, Timber Banks is a natural and tranquil setting; winding through ancient forests and emerging neighborhoods, you’ll see golf in a very new way. The Front Nine at Timber Banks This straight forward opening hole measures 390 yards from the BEAR Tees, watch out for the tree guarding the right side of the fairway off the tee. A short iron approach to a unprotected green, at least by Nicklaus Design standards, leaves you a chance to get your round off on the right foot. A well placed drive between the bunkers gives you the best opportunity to go for the green in 2. The green is well protected and one of the most severely sloped on the course. Hole number 2 is a true risk reward hole- reachable but dangerous. This dog-leg right par 4 is one of the shortest par 4’s we have and also one of the tightest. A tee shot placed left center of the fairway past the corner gives you a great look at this ‘mild’ green by Nicklaus’ standards. This is the longest of the par 3’s measuring 226 yards from the Bear Tees, it requires a long iron or hybrid, between the water on the left and the bunkers on the right. The green is one of the deepest on the course- knowing the pin location is essential for selecting the proper club. The number one handicap hole requires a well placed big tee shot right- center of the fairway that gives you the best angle for your long iron approach. Avoid the greenside bunkers or a bogey or worse is likely. A slight dog-leg left, your tee shot must stay left of the tree that protects the right side of the fairway. The lone bunker steals the headlines. A mid to short iron approach must carry to the correct portion of the green, otherwise break out your short game and try to get up and down from one of the many collection areas that surround one of the largest putting surfaces on the course.
A par 5, 3-shot hole all the way. Measuring 584 yards from the bear tees, it plays longer than the yardage indicates. The second shot is key to leave yourself a short iron or wedge to this elevated green which is protected by the water hazard front and right. This par 3 provides a challenge with club selection because it has one of the shallowest greens on the course. Once you have the right club, avoid the large bunker on the right and the collection area on the left. Take your 2- putt par and move on. This hole hosts the most challenging tee shot we have. A long drive placed to the right of the massive fairway bunker will leave a long iron or hybrid to a green that is another Nicklaus Design staple, sloped from back left to front right. And don’t forget about the well placed green- side bunker, it will catch an errant approach shot. The Back Nine at Timber Banks A solid tee shot slightly left of center will leave a short iron approach on this shorter par 4. Accurate club selection is critical to find the relatively shallow putting surface. The fairway bunker on the left is 259 yards from the BEAR tees. CAUTION! Lateral water hazard right of fairway bunker and behind green! Avoid the bunkers on this beautiful three shot par 5 for a chance at par or better. The fortress green demands precision, so be resolved and commit to the shot! The bunkers on the left are 260 yards from the BEAR tees. A tee shot of 228 yards from the BEAR tee will safely carry the water hazard on this medium length par 4. The green falls away behind and to the right and demands a confident approach. The bunker on the right is 298 yards from the BEAR tees. The first of the back nine’s par 3s, this well guarded green requires proper club selection for a chance at par. Beware when the flagstick is above the bunker! Timber Banks’ second par 5 requires brains, brawn, and a deft touch. The fairway is wider than it appears from the tee. Avoid the bunker on the right and you will marvel at the challenges that remain. Place your second shot where you can use your “old reliable” for your third. You will need all its magic to safely find the elevated green. The bunker on the right is 296 yards from the BEAR tees.

One of Mr. Nicklaus’s most masterful short par 4’s, do not be deceived by #15’s beauty. The bunkers on the right grab the headlines; lateral water hazards on the left and right do the damage. The sliver of a green completes the package. The bunkers on the right are 360 yards from the BEAR tees. The Seneca River and an early peek at Timber Banks’ coming attractions add majesty to an already beautiful par 3. The green is the largest on this nine, but…the greenside bunker is as well. Choose wisely. The prudent play may be a lay-up short of the cross bunkers leaving a comfortable mid-iron approach on this medium length, slight dogleg right par 4. When the wind is right a long drive will leave only a short pitch. The green is narrow with no bunkers and water to its left. The first bunker on the right is 222 yards from the BEAR tees and will be carried with a drive of 252 yards. The last bunker on the left is 254 yards from the BEAR tees. Long but downhill, the 18th is a classic, daunting Nicklaus Design par 4 finishing hole. A narrow lateral hazard runs the length of the left side emptying into a guardian pond. Village welcomes two new swans
Launches swan naming contest for month of November
The village of Manlius would like to welcome a pair of new swans to the swan pond. Provided by Michael Bean from Skaneateles, the pair arrived Oct. 29. Bean is an experienced waterfowl expert who previously worked for Dr. S. Dillon Ripley when Ripley was director of the Smithsonian Institution. Bean’s work has taken him all over the world and he has first-hand experience with all species of swans. The white swan is a 3-year-old male. The brown and white swan is a female born this past May. She will be white by next year and is extra special because she carries genes that will give her blue eyes and a pink bill and feet. Her bill is already

The DCL is just one of three libraries so far that have uploaded digital images taken from its local history collections. Active in area organizations Katharine B a i r d Ha n s e n , 93, died Monday Oct. 25, 2010, at the Nottingham in Jamesville. She is survived by her brother, John Baird and sister, Olive McKay both of ChiMrs. Hansen cago; her four children; Julia Hilton of New York, NY, Gillette Hansen of Denver, CO, Katharine Ralston of Colorado Springs, CO and Baird Hansen of Cazenovia, NY, 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Mrs. Hansen married Herbert Leighton Hansen in 1943 and made her home in Syracuse,
Cazenovia and Vero Beach, FL. Mr. Hansen was President of Paragon Supply Company and died in 1990. Born Katharine Dole Baird in Chicago, IL, Mrs. Hansen’s family founded Baird and Warner Real Estate in 1855, which is the largest and oldest family owned real estate company in Chicago. She graduated from The Lincoln School, Evanston, IL, Les Fougeres, Lausanne, Switzerland, Highland Hall, Hollidaysburg, PA and Pine Manor College, Chestnut Hill, MA. Mrs. Hansen was extremely active in numerous health, social and cultural organizations in the Syracuse area; serving as a director of Memorial Hospital, Planned Parenthood, YWCA and the Everson Museum as well as be-
ing a member of the Junior League and Social Arts Club. “Katie Hansen” was synonymous with a myriad of creative endeavors. She was an accomplished flower arranger, president of the Syracuse Garden Club, earning special recognition from the Garden Club of America and a founder in “Studio She,” a design firm in Cazenovia.
