JCC to offer theater program Police charge woman in string for people age 50-plus By Tami S. Zimmerman tzimmerman@cnylink.com When Shirley Fenner Reidenbaugh asked if the Jewish Community Center could provide rehearsal space for a new seniors’ theater group, JCC Executive Director Marci Erlebacher said she jumped on it. Reidenbaugh is a professional actress who created and successfully ran the program, “Seniors Reaching Out,” for three years while living in Greensboro, N.C.. She has an impressive resume she built up right here in Central New York that includes several seasons with the Fayetteville’s Famous Artists Playhouse, Syracuse University’s New Playhouse and the Syracuse Repertory Theatre. Her late husband was the Syracuse University Drama Department chairman and as-

sociate dean of the College of Visual and Performing Arts. “Shirley is amazing,” Erlebacher said. “She is a high quality lady and performer and we are very proud to be associated with her.” Seniors Reaching Out is open to the entire community aged 50-plus, and you don’t have to be an actor – or JCC member – to join. The group’s goal will be to entertain residents of senior-related facilities and other local venues, with a potpourri of considerations including short excerpts from Broadway plays, monologues, poetry, tap dancing, vocal and instrumental solos. There will also be opportunities for people to work as stage managers, writers, crew members and assistant directors. “[Shirley] is willing to work with anySee Theater, page 8

Maureen Shanahan remembered Friends and family members held candles and sang carols outside the Shanahan home in Manlius the evening of Dec. 12. Inside, Maureen, 54, lay in a hospital bed; the front door open so she could hear them sing. The group then bowed for a brief prayer, and as they began to clear, Maureen’s nurse called out to the crowd: “Maureen says thank you. It was beautiful. The next morning on Dec. 13, with husband Dick, son Jesse and dear friend Linda Shields by her side, Maureen said goodbye. She died after a two-year battle with ovarian cancer. “Maureen touched many people’s lives, said friend and Manlius Village Board trustee Janice Abdo-Rott at a Dec. 12 benefit that friends had arranged. “[So] many people loving her, she’s just amazing. More than 300 people attended the afternoon fundraiser, over 100 local businesses donated raffle items and one couldn’t walk far without bumping into volunteers identified by wearing name tags. Maureen was on the Manlius Village Parks and Recreation Board for about 10 years. She was employed as a hairstylist at Ambiance in Fayetteville, and persevered until late October when doctors told her the fight was futile. Despite the grave news, her spirits remained high, her daughter Jenna said. What inspired Jenna most was her

mother’s strength and spunk in the midst of her trials. For Jesse, his mom’s sense of humor infused hope. That’s what kept her going, he said. Shields, who was there until Maureen drew her last breath, recalls when they first met. She said she was a little nervous because they had quite opposite personalities – Maureen was loud, Shields quiet. “Then I realized it was just that Italian blood in her,â€? Shields said. “[Maureen] just said that’s how it was. She was one of the most sincere people I knew.â€? The two eventually became best friends. Longtime friend Kate Moran remembers Maureen as both caring and generous. “I used to go over to her house ‌ she would make me goodies every time,â€? said Moran, who was just a toddler when they first met. “I loved her so much. Going to Maureen’s [was] like going home.â€? On Moran’s wedding day, Maureen styled the entire bridal party’s hair and wouldn’t take a penny. “When I went to pay her, she wouldn’t let me,â€? she said. For Donna Fellows, Maureen was like a sister: “We shared a lot of laughter and friendship.â€? The day before Maureen’s death, her husband of 30 years held back tears when asked how the family was getting through this challenging time. He cast his eyes toward the crowded room, touched by the outpouring of love and kindness, and said with a voice struggling to speak: “Lots of support. Lots of good people.â€?

Let it snow, but drive safely Central New York has seen an incredible amount of snowfall already and winter has just begun. While we wish everyone safe travels during the holiday season, we also ask you to remember to exercise caution when our children return from their school break, especially considering this is when the weather typically worsens. Motorists should also remember to exercise increased caution during the morning hours when our children are waiting for their school buses. Frigid winds, snow and ice trigger important winter weather safety reminders to motorists who share the road with school buses. Motorists should use extra precaution and allow plenty of room to stop when approaching or following a school bus as they make frequent stops loading and unloading students. While school buses are the safest way to get to and from school (nearly 10 times safer than walking to school and as much as 13 times safer than traveling in a passenger vehicle, according to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration), parents also need to exercise extra safety measures during the winter months. Tell your children to follow these guidelines: Dress appropriately for cold, icy weather - warm coats, gloves, hats and waterproof footwear. Passengers should not wear clothes with toggles or dangling key chains as they can get caught in the bus doors or on the handrail. Stop, look and listen – Remaining alert is so important for school children. Hoodies, headphones and portable electronic devices can distract students from paying attention to surrounding traffic. Never run after the bus. Plan ahead and allow sufficient time to get to the bus stop. Wait for the bus to stop completely before approaching the bus to get on or before standing up to get off. Always use caution when stepping on or off the bus and at crosswalks. We wish you all a happy and safe holiday season. Source: First Student, Inc.

From the mailbag ‘A promise, a hope and a call’

To the editor: “To you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Christ, the Lord.” Luke 2:11 In this simple yet glorious event in the history of humanity we find from God a promise, a hope and a call. The birth of Jesus is a promise that God is with us always, in all places and at all times. In that promise all human life, indeed the entire creation, is declared holy. Like the shepherds, we discover hope in the stable. As we worship the Christ in the food-dish of the animals, we find a new kind of love. The fulfillment of that love is a self-offering which comes from God’s initiative and not our own. Our confidence is found in God. The call of the Messiah’s crib is then to participate with God in the renewal of the creation that God loves so dearly, including all God’s people, respecting the dignity of every human being. This way is one of peace, reconciliation and thanksgiving. Fayetteville prospers, mayor says

To the editor: This certainly has been an exciting year. So many positive things have happened! How long has the park property in the lower village sat fallow and unattractive? Today it undergoes a transformation that will add a significant public space for all of us to use. We have a number of new businesses that have opened their doors over the past 12 months and added new vitality to our village charm. The new flowerpots have not only beautified our streets but also won us acclaim for creativity. Countless residents have invested in restoring and improving their homes. We had another wonderful Fayetteville festival in September and another wonderful tree lighting celebration in December. No one is a prouder mayor of a better village anywhere. All we have to be thankful for comes from the hard and conscientious work of village trustees, employees, volunteers and residents who dedicate themselves to continually improving our little corner of the world. The holiday season is in full swing. With all of us in the middle of this joyous time of year I want to thank each and every resident and extend my warm wishes for a happy and safe holiday and for a wonderful New Year. Have a great holiday season! Mark Olson Fayetteville Mayor

Any idea what the greatest threat to your kids might be? Technology? Bullying? How about the food they eat? Diet-related diseases are on the rise in the United States and your children are a major target. Fortunately, there are ways to combat them. Knowing a little about what we should eat, how we should eat, and how we should go about shopping for the foods we eat can go a long way to curbing these hazards. Let’s face it; America is obese. And that’s not our only problem. USA Today recently reported that by the year 2050, one in three Americans will have Type II diabetes. The risk of developing this form of diabetes rises as children become increasingly overweight, according to Dr. Lynn Brann of the nutrition department at Syracuse University. Fortunately, both are preventable. To reduce the risk of developing Type II diabetes and obesity, people can make several lifestyle choices; eating habits included. The foods we ingest every day have a direct effect on the performance of our bodies. Eating a balanced assortment of natural, healthy foods is crucial. The healthfulness of a wide variety of diets have been analyzed and tested – from the MyPyramid and DASH diets to the Mediterranean and vegetarianism. Studies essentially show the same results: eat

fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds and fish; poultry and meet should be lean and solid fats and sugars should be cut out as possible. Food contains vitamins and minerals that are essential to our bodies. However, as best-selling author Michael Pollan suggests, it can be helpful to avoid thinking about what we eat in terms of its constituent parts. For example, rather than telling your children that bananas have a lot of Vitamin B6, just appreciate the banana for what it is: healthy. Avoid eating a lot of processed foods. Books that are highly critical of the American food industry, including “Fast Food Nation” by Eric Schlosser and Pollan’s “The Omnivore’s Dilemma,” explain how many of these products are manufactured by mixing together a multitude of chemicals. Thousands of foods sold in grocery stores are made this way. To implement change in eating habits, begin to look at food labels. But instead of focusing on nutritional facts, as Pollen recommends, read the ingredients instead. Is the list long? Does it contain words difficult to pronounce? If the answer is yes, that’s a good indication the food was manufactured in a factory. “But wait, this says it contains more omega-3s!” According to Pollan, more often than not, to get a food to contain more of any one vitamin or mineral, chemicals get added that compromise the purity of the food in another way. Simply put, avoid any products with labels that make a miracle health claim. Finally, enjoy the changes you just made. Eat slowly and savor the taste. Our brains don’t know our stomachs are full for 20 minutes, so take your time. That way, you’re less likely to overeat.

For the next five weeks, the Eagle Bulletin will be publishing a series of articles based on food politics. The submissions were written by Syracuse University students studying under Professor Nicole Moss, a professional writing instructor. By Brad Weiler

Donovan from page 4 that New York state over the years has implemented a number of mandates, with good intentions, which have outlived their times or are in dire need of updating to today’s business environment. Bottom line is that the state can no longer fund its mandates – that burden has been squarely placed on the backs of local taxpayers – while the state government continues to spend money it doesn’t have, creating a very serious financial environment for all levels of government. Our recommendations are consistent with our governor-elect’s campaign agenda on many of these same issues and our hope is to all work together to right a sinking ship. Albany can no longer continue to do business as usual. We are one of the highest taxed states in the country. We can change that by working together with everyone suffering a little bit of the pain instead of some suffering all of the pain. To see a copy of our report, please go to nycom.org. After reading the

report, I would appreciate it if each of you would call, write or e-mail your state elected officials, senator, assemblyman, and yes in two weeks, Governor Cuomo, and just tell them you support the “Mayoral Task Force on Mandate and Property Tax Relief.” The mayors in this state represent approximately 18 million people. There is strength in numbers. We need your support going forward to deal with these very tough issues and to make legitimate changes that will help relieve the burden on the taxpayer. As NYCOM President Teresi says, “A Crisis is a Terrible Thing to Waste.” If we want more jobs, our children to stay in the state, our seniors to be able to retire here and our state to survive a financial crisis and once again become the “Empire State,” we need to make dramatic changes. The time is now, before it’s too late. Village of Minoa Mayor Dick Donovan is a NYCOM member and also president of the Onondaga County Mayors Association.

MACNY from page 4 property tax relief come to fruition. Once achieved, I fully believe New York state will be that much further ahead in achieving a better business climate, and becoming a more viable and attractive place to operate a business. Randy Wolken is the president of MACNY, the Manufacturers Association, which represents more than 330 companies in a 19-county region in Upstate New York. The 97-year-old organization provides human resource services, training, purchasing solutions, networking opportunities and advocacy support for its members.

are discouraged from relocating to our state. Additionally, it is more difficult to recruit and retain skill labor when they must pay much higher than average property taxes. In order to bring much needed relief to New Yorkers, immediate attention must be made to solving the property tax crisis. Through his recent public statements, Governor-elect Cuomo has taken a progressive and public promise to tackle this head-on. On behalf of MACNY and its entire membership, we look forward to working closely with the Administration and the Legislature to see much needed

CBA girls beat ESM in league opener By Phil Blackwell pblackwell@cnylink.com

All the possible excuses were in line for the Christian Brothers Academy girls basketball team prior to last Tuesday night’s game at East Syracuse-Minoa. The Brothers were 0-2, perhaps discouraged from the two losses it took at the Lady Raider Tip-Off Classic at Utica Proctor, and were playing for the third time in four days. Plus, ESM was confident following a win in its Dec. 11 opener at Chittenango. Instead of pity, though, CBA produced passion, especially on the defensive side, as it pulled away late and beat the Spartans 54-37 to get an early leg up in the OHSL

Freedom division. Another virtue – patience – helped, too. Though CBA led 12-7 after one period, it could not draw clear as, in the next two periods, ESM hung close and, with its own strong defense, kept things tight. Then came the fourth quarter – where, erasing any possible suspense, CBA applied more pressure and wore the Spartans down, holding them to a scant two points. As this went on, Marisa Romeo was busy recording 16 points, while Ellen Voorheis and Kelsey Johnson landed 12 points apiece. No one on ESM could match those numbers, as Gabby Eure led with 10 points and Nicole Cassella added six points. Olivia Luciani made just a single 3-pointer. ESM did not take too long to recover, though, as it went

to Fowler Thursday night and started clicking again in a 68-46 victory over the Falcons. Maintaining a crisp pace, the Spartans worked its way to a 31-23 halftime lead, but could not get away as Fowler, led by Jaquela Lockwood (19 points) and Latina Smith (16 points), kept their team within reach. Only a 22-9 dash through the fourth quarter put things away, as ESM saw Luciani hit four 3-pointers to account for most of her game-high 18 points. Four Spartans finished in double figures as Julie Maselli earned 13 points, Eure picked up 12 points and Cassella improved to 11 points. The Spartans would host its other neighbors, from Jamesville-DeWitt, on Tuesday before hosting the Dec. 27-28 Vince Celi Memorial Tournament.

CBA boys fall to Henninger, 66-61 Chisholm finished with 14 points, most of them in the second half, as Tommie Spinner and Charles Manning each put up eight points and Gainey added seven points - none bigger than the long heave that helped point the way to a bittersweet win. CBA warmed up for this game by going to Fulton last Tuesday night and getting nice inside-outside balance in a 74-52 win over the Red Raiders. Hot at the start, the Brothers led 27-14 through one period, and while it could not quite maintain that torrid pace, it still expanded the lead to 62-35 before letting the starters rest late.

Before he left, Evans hit four 3-pointers on his way to 18 points as fellow guard Rob Cuomo contributed 11 points. Inside, Thomson finished with 14 points as Drescher added eight points and Haynes contributed seven points. Back home on Tuesday

3-pointers, CBA chipped away in the closing minutes, committing a series of fouls as the margin fell to single digits. Shakir Evans, who had a game-high 24 points, and Pete Drescher, who added 16 points, led that late charge, making up for the fact that Thomson only managed 10 points. Fittitngly, it was junior point guard Tevin Chisholm that hit on three crucial free throws in the game’s final 90 seconds to help seal the victory. Chisholm had chosen to wear Kihary Blue’s no. 4 in honor of his fallen friend, who had become a mentor to Chisholm in the months prior to his death.

For the second year in a row, the Christian Brothers Academy boys basketball team walked into a highly emotional cauldron as it faced Henninger in the annual Peppino’s Invitational. Twelve months earlier, CBA had won 53-51 on the night where Henninger dedicated its court in honor of former coach Joe Mazzella, who had passed away in September 2009. Now it was the Brothers meeting Henninger barely two weeks after the death, at 19, of Kihary Blue, the star point guard and quarterback who led the Black Knights to sectional titles in both basketball and football. Of course, CBA had beaten Blue and Henninger in an overtime classic for the ’09 sectional Class AA championship. And this time, Henninger would come out on top, building a big lead in the second half, then hanging on to beat the Brothers 66-61. CBA led 7-0 within the game’s opening minute. But the Black Knights only allowed one field goal the rest of the first quarter, spreading out its man-to-man defense and using its size to disrupt the Brothers’ passing and force turnovers. That trend continued into the second quarter, as Henninger led by as much as 11 points (25-14) before CBA went on a 14-3 run. With one second left in the half, Greg Thomson’s free throws made it 31-28, and it looked to be a three-point margin going into the break. In that single second, though, everything changed. Gainey took the inbounds pass and, knowing he had to get rid of the ball, let it fly. It appeared too strong, but

the ball hit the backboard and front rim and crashed through the net, instantly doubling Henninger’s lead to 34-28 and leaving CBA stricken. “He (Gainey) had the presence of mind to know the clock situation,” said Saroney. “It gave us some momentum.” Charged up by the answered prayer, Henninger dominated much of the third quarter, as Kavon Delee got eight of his 16 points in that frame. By the early part of the final period, the Black Knights had a 55-38 advantage, and it appeared safe. But the Brothers refused to go away. Sparked by reserve Dylan Haines’ back-to-back

CBA/J-D, F-M hockey play to 4-4 tie By Phil Blackwell pblackwell@cnylink.com Trying not to replicate the bitter conditions on the outside, the Fayetteville-Manlius and CBA/J-D ice hockey teams did everything they could to warm up. Part of that effort included a local showdown Saturday night at Onondaga Nation Arena – which did not include any sort of resolution as the Brothers and Hornets played to a 4-4 tie. This game had all kinds of mood swings. CBA/J-D trailed, 1-0, when in the second period it erupted for four goals. Sean Lavin, Scott Firman, Nick Papayanakos and Josh Rathbun each scored, with Firman adding two assists. Lavin and Papayanakos also had assists. F-M trailed 4-2 – but it turned up its own attack in the third period, scoring twice to pull even again. And led by Ben Napierala, who made 31 saves, the Hornets maintained the draw through the overtime period, too.

Alex Ferrara, with two goals, and Sean Wildhack, with one goal and one assist, led F-M’s attack. Dante Capriotti also scored as Tim Mallouf and Taylor Bellina earned assists. CBA/J-D goalie George Collins finished with 18 saves. Just a night earlier, CBA/J-D had ripped past defending state Division II champion New Hartford 5-1, blanking the Spartans after the first period as it took 40 shots. Papayanakos, with two goals, led the Brothers on the offensive side, as Scott Firman, Brendan Flanagan and Brandon Pendergast also converted. Nick Firman put up a pair of assists as Rathbun got an assist, too. The Hornets’ problem last Tuesday was that it was facing defending state champion West Genesee – and a motivated Wildcats squad jumped all over F-M in a 7-0 decision at Cicero Twin Rinks. WG had just seen its 26-game win streak snapped by Suffern in the finals of the Wildcat Classic and was not happy about it.

Just how unhappy was something F-M quickly found out as it fell behind, 4-0, by the end of the first period. The Hornets’ defense did settle down, and Ben Napierala finished with 31 saves, but the damage had been rendered. F-M managed just seven total shots for the game. On WG’s side, Ryan LaVallee had two goals as Shawn Lynch, Josh Duquette and Nick Holzhauer each had one goal and one assist. Two nights (and one snow-canceled practice) later, F-M went to Meachem Rink and took a 7-1 defeat to the Corcoran Cougars. Already up 2-0, the Cougars used four goals in the second period to break it open as it improved to 3-0 on the season. Seven different Corcoran players got those seven goals, with Connor Lyons and Steve Young (one goal and one assist apiece) leading the way. Taylor Bellina broke F-M’s scoring drought in the second period, as Ryan Fero picked up the assist. Napierala finished with 34 saves.

CBA volleyball splits; ESM falls to Fulton By Phil Blackwell pblackwell@cnylink.com Continuing its strong start, the Christian Brothers Academy girls volleyball team went to Westhill last Tuesday night and swept the Warriors in three sets. The Brothers won the first and third sets by equal 25-12 margins, with a 25-18 second set in between. Claire Gollegly and Kelly Bewley each had five assists, with Gollegly adding three digs and two kills. Ivanka Tamnycky picked up three kills, three aces and two digs. On the defensive side, Alexis Koval had five digs as Jasmine Harrell gained four digs. The Brothers then lost to Marcellus in three sets

on Thursday night. The Mustangs used its power and precision to dominate the opener 25-11. CBA settled down, though, and played the Mustangs tight in each of the next two sets, nearly snatching both games. In each case, Marcellus still got the late points, taking the second set 26-24 and pulling out the third set 25-23 to clinch the match. Nicole Fletcher pounded away 14 kills and four blocks, adding five digs, Jess Cost earned 22 assists. East Syracuse-Minoa put up a big fight against defending Class A champion Fulton last Tuesday night, only to lose to the Red Raiders in five sets. During the long match, Paige Holt picked up 30 assists. Danielle Steigerwald had 14 kills, while Laura Adams put up nine kills and seven digs, and Charlotte

F-M wrestlers edged by Baldwinsville By Phil Blackwell pblackwell@cnylink.com

Stuphen. However, F-M lost four of the next five matches (three of them forfeits), the only break coming when Sam Wells won his 285-pound clash with Jacob Florack 4-2. So with four matches left, it was tied, 28-28. B’ville moved ahead when Tim Sposato (103 pounds) picked Eric Mohr. F-M tied it again as Pat Quinlan (112 pounds) pinned Chad McArdell midway through the second period. After Jacob Norton (119 pounds) lost to

Joey Shaheen in a second-period pin, Josh Scalzetti, in the 125-pound finale, had to pin Connor Ross. And though Scalzetti dominated the match, he could only manage a 9-1 decision, not quite enough. East Syracuse-Minoa competed Saturday at the Tiger Duals in Onondaga, going 1-4. The Spartans beat the host Tigers 3622, but lost to Marcellus 38-36, took a 5110 defeat to APW/Pulaski, fell to Mohawk 60-25 and ended with a 69-14 loss to meet champion Central Square.

Each of the area’s three high school wrestling teams – Fayetteville-Manlius, East Syracuse-Minoa and CBA/JamesvilleDeWitt – saw its activity curtailed by the latest winter snowstorm. But the Hornets did get on the mat Thursday night, at Baldwinsville, and built a big early lead before the Bees rallied late and prevailed by a 40-37 margin.

Down 4-0 after one match, the Hornets reeled off five consecutive victories, starting with Tom Quinlan, at 135 pounds, pinning Ryan McArdell late in the second period. Jon Hajduk (140 pounds) claimed a forfeit, and Ryan Kiggins, at 145 pounds, took just 1:07 to pin Brent Grippe. Tyler Neveldine (152 pounds) maintained the momentum, pulling out a 3-2 decision over James Eustice, and Augie Pavone (160 pounds) earned an 11-3 win over Gunner

Obituaries Carl Baum Leland, 96 Owned dealerships

On Dec. 4, 2010, Carl Baum Leland, 96, after a long residency at the Lutheran Homes in Clinton. Mr. Leland, second son of Issac Leland and Louise Baum Leland, was a descendent of Col. Joshua Leland and his wife Waitstill who, in 1793, were among the earliest settlers in the Chenango Valley. He grew up in Hamilton in a family of village merchants, which influenced the course of his life. After graduating from Colgate University in 1937, he traveled throughout Northern New York on behalf of the CIT Corporation, which provided financing to car dealers. During the War Years from 1942 to 1945, he was responsible for coordinating transportation for 8,000 employees of the Massena Works of the Aluminum Company of America. With the end of gas rationing and the resumption of domestic automobile and truck production in 1946, Mr. Leland opened his first business, Leland Motors, in Massena. The business specialized in

the servicing of all vehicles and the sale of heavy duty Ford snow plow trucks to local villages and townships. In 1948, he bought the Ford dealership in Canton, NY, where he moved the snow plow business and his young family. Two years later, he bought the Ford dealership in Ogdensburg and continued to operate both dealerships for several years until the Canton business was sold. Mr. Leland operated the Ogdensburg dealership until its sale in 1964, after which he and family moved to Fayetteville. He owned and operated the Ford dealership in Cazenovia, NY from 1965 until his retirement as a business owner in 1976. His selling passion was for trucks, especially those equipped to handle the heavy winter snows of Upstate New York. Mr. Leland was an historian with a particular interest in writing about the stories and legends of Madison County and other places in Central and Northern New York. In his later years, he recounted numerous stories about historical events
