The Christmas Story came alive at Holy Cross Church at the 4 p.m.mass on Christmas Eve when more than 70 children assumed the roles of angels, sheep, shepherds, stars, trees, kings and the Holy Family. Baby Jesus was played by Jack Andrew Picciano, Mary by Anna Skansalis, and St. Joseph by Connor Evans. The 30-member children’s choir was on hand to sing Christmas Carols. More than 800 people were present at this liturgy as they imbibed the real meaning of Christmas.

How secure is your online identity? On Dec. 11, hackers managed to break into the records for technology website Gizmodo and the gossip website Gawker (both websites are owned by Gawker Media). The hackers released a database of thousands of users’ e-mail addresses and passwords to the public. In theory, this would not be too much of a problem for most users — if your account was compromised, at most, the hackers could make a comment on the website under your name. But if you’re like most people, you use the same password for everything. And that can be dangerous when some websites, like Gawker, are less secure than others. It isn’t too much of a stretch: If you use the same e-mail address and password on several sites — to check your email, to access online banking, etc. — and someone finds that same password, you could be vulnerable to an attack. But the fix is easy. Change your passwords from website to website! Don’t use a simple dictionary word, either — sophisticated hackers’ computer programs can try to break into your account with brute force, guessing thousands of words at a time. Google has provided a list of suggestions for password security. For more information, visit google.com/accounts/PasswordHelp. Tips for creating a secure password

Include punctuation marks and/or numbers. Mix capital and lowercase letters. Include similar looking substitutions, such as the number zero for the letter ‘O’ or ‘$’ for the letter ‘S’. Create a unique acronym. Include phonetic replacements, such as ‘Luv 2 Laf’ for ‘Love to Laugh’.

Things to avoid

Don’t use a password that contains personal information (name, birth date, etc.) Don’t use words or acronyms that can be found in a dictionary. Don’t use keyboard patterns (asdf) or sequential numbers (1234). Don’t make your password all numbers, uppercase letters or lowercase letters. Don’t use repeating characters (aa11).

Never tell your password to anyone. Never send your password by email. Periodically test your current password and change it to a new one.

To the editor: The village of Manlius welcomed a new pair of swans in November. We were excited to give these swans a new home but they came to us without names. Mayor Mark-Paul Serafin asked the community for help to name our newest village residents. A swan naming contest was held, and after receiving more than 100 votes, Faye and “Manny, for Fayetteville and Manlius, were selected by the parks and recreation board. To the editor: On behalf of Vera House, we would like to express our deepest sympathy to the friends and family of JenniLyn Watson. As twenty-somethings that work with victims and perpetrators of intimate partner and sexual violence on a daily basis, we have found Jenni-Lyn’s homicide particularly troubling. The media coverage describing Jenni-Lyn’s relationship with her ex-boyfriend was an eerie reminder of some of the relationships our friends are currently in. There are people in our lives who consistently minimize abuse as jealousy, anger or even a representation of true love. Abuse is any action that hurts, humiliates, causes fear or forces another person to do something against their will. It has been discouraging to hear that the focus of conversations surrounding this case are about educating young women on how to avoid violent and abusive relationships. Jenni-Lyn did everything she was supposed to do. She ended the relationship, made plans for her safety and sought out support from her friends and family. She was an innocent victim. Though all of us can benefit from learning about the red flags of abuse, a tragedy like this brings to the forefront the need for a new way of thinking. As a community we need to understand that the only person who could have prevented this from happening was the person who chose to take Jenni-Lyn’s life. For this reason, we need to challenge those who continue to talk about intimate partner violence as a women’s issue. Intimate partner violence is a human issue. How far does your $25 donation go to feeding, clothing and housing the needy?

Six not for profit groups in Syracuse shared how far they could stretch a $25 donation -- less than the cost of a tank of gas -- to feed, clothe or house the needy, educate the community, or preserve the history of the county. Donations to all of the following organizations are tax deductible and stay within Syracuse and Onondaga County. If a website is noted for donations, the organization offers a secure online donation system.

The Salvation Army provides early education programs, child and juvenile welfare and justice services, housing, transitional and emergency assistance for adults and youth, adult day programs, a youth camp and emergency disaster services, all in the Central New York area. During last week’s turkey drive, $25 donated was doubled by an anonymous matching grant, said Greg Meitus, public relations and marketing manager of Salvation Army of the Syracuse Area. At $15 per turkey, one donor’s $25 commitment could provide almost three complete turkey dinners for three local

With trademark defense and great senior leadership, Kevin King’s basketball charges beat everyone back as it gained a championship to match the last one it earned in 1997. And with Kevin McAvoy’s live arm, the baseball Warriors avenged two losses to Bishop Ludden, then cruised the rest of the way to a second straight title in Binghamton – even through a state final four that saw a venue change and a last out recorded close to midnight. You also had an ice hockey sweep. West Genesee somehow made it through 25 games without a blemish, capping it off with the miraculous comeback against Suffern in the semifinals and the titlegame shutout of Saratoga Springs. New Hartford had it tougher in Division II, needing overtime just to get out of the sectional finals, but then handling the rest to go back-to-back

as it beat Queensbury 5-2 in front of the home folks in Utica. The fall brought four more instances of great teams reaching the top spot. Three were quite familiar, while the other took the perfect route. It was, of course, the Skaneateles boys soccer Lakers going 22-0 and winning it all in Class B. To do that required a deep and lethal offense, a superb defense (two goals allowed in the entire post-season) and some amount of good fortune. It also meant beating good local Class AA teams (CNS, West Genesee, CBA) and handling the pressure of staying undefeated, which they did, to say the least. For two other state champions, it was an event years in the making. Baldwinsville, in Class AA girls volleyball, had made the sectional title part routine, but had just missed in two previous trips to the state Class AA show in Glens Falls. This time, with a deep front

line and two rock-solid anchors in the back (Brianna Stewart to set, Becca Maher to defend), the Bees survived the round-robin and two deficits to Webster Schroeder and pulled it out in five. In the case of Cazenovia’s field hockey Lakers, it was the same story – a lot of sectional success, but nothing more, prior to 2010. It all fit this time, though, especially a record-setting offense where Tori Widrick, Belle Hoagland, Abby Eschen and Jillian Vogl supplied the goals. And it was Vogl, with two tallies in the state semifinal and the overtime game-winner in the finals, that had the final say to get her school a first-ever team state championship. Now here comes the unfair part. Each of the above teams has made their communities proud, going as far as one can in our system, with no real chance to compare them to other great programs across the country. Then there’s Fayette-

ville-Manlius girls cross country. Providing yet another exclamation point to yet another wondrous autumn of running far ahead of the pack, the Hornets went to Oregon and, when done there, brought home the Nike Nationals top prize for the fifth year in a row. Word has it that, in Portland, some of the other teams (and their supporters) openly whispered about the F-M methods as the girls won and the boys finished second.

Everything from maniacal training to the old standby, steroids, was brought up. A bit jealous, are we? Bill Aris, the coach responsible for this dynasty, clearly says otherwise. Yes, they train hard and they give up lots of typical teenage rituals to run, but it’s their own choice. They are self-motivated, and best of all none of them cares who gets the ultimate credit, as long as they all win. Expect more of it, too. Courtney Chapman, part of all five of the champion-

ship journeys, is on her way to NCAA champion Villanova, but the other six that won this year – Christie Rutledge, Heather Martin, Katie Sischo, Jillian Fanning, Katie Brislin and Emily McGurrin – return for 2011. And the younger runners are bent on maintaining the streak. So yes, 2010 was full of winning efforts at the highest level, and one wonders whether it starts a trend, or is just an instance where everything clicked, over and over.

Grimes boys split, fall to Ludden By Phil Blackwell pblackwell@cnylink.com Since the history between the two schools is limited, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s foolish to think that the basketball games between Bishop Grimes and Bishop Ludden can amount to a â&#x20AC;&#x153;Holy Warâ&#x20AC;? on par with that the Gaelic Knights once had with Christian Brothers Academy. Still, there was no denying the importance of the Cobrasâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; encounter with the Gaelic Knights on Wednesday night in Geddes. Grimes was 3-0, Ludden 4-0, and whoever won would lead the OHSL Liberty division going into 2011. Grimes had plenty of good early moments, and battled all the way to the final buzzer â&#x20AC;&#x201C; but still lost a 56-54 decision to the Gaelic Knights. Mike Stone led both sides with 19 points, he only made a single 3-pointer in the second half and fouled out in the closing minutes, unable to help the Cobras in its late comeback attempt. Stone had dazzled in the gameâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s opening minute, hitting a baseline jumper off the glass, sinking another jump shot after a nifty crossover dribble and, to cap it off, making a steal and lay-up to make it 6-0 before Ludden even got a point. Within two minutes, though, Ludden was out in front thanks to its own 7-0 run, and freshman Dan Kaigler powered them through the rest of the first half, getting 11 of his 17 points on everything from drives to the basket to a pulled-up 3-pointer. That helped the Gaelic Knights take a 28-23 lead to the break. Ludden aimed to limit Stoneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s possessions, and while that worked in the third quarter, Grimes still used baskets from Gai Ater (who finished with 12 points) and Connor Sohl (who added 10 points) to inch ahead 36-35 late in the period.

Again, the Gaelic Knights would answer. First, Tyler Young hit on backto-back possessions, pushing Ludden in front 39-36. Then Matt Rogers chimed in with his own pair of baskets just before the period ended, and suddenly the Cobras were down 43-36. Grimes never left the picture, closing within 43-42 early in the fourth quarter before Luddenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Kelly Beaudoin stepped up, draining five straight points to restore his teamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s margin. With Stone and fellow senior Mike Sugamosto (just five points) shut down and Ludden defending well all over the court, it carried a 53-45 lead to the closing 90 seconds â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and still Grimes almost pulled it out. Kaigler and Young missed six consecutive free throws, and Casey Evansâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; banked-in 3-pointer with 15 seconds left made it 54-51. Finally, Beaudoin stepped to the line and made the clinching foul shots, and though Ater got a 3-pointer in the waning seconds, Ludden would hang on. Two nights before facing Ludden, the Cobras had to deal with Marcellus in the make-up of a game snowed out earlier in the month. Led again by Stone and Sugamosto, Grimes got away in the second half and beat the Mustangs 74-59. From the time it started the game 90, the Cobras never trailed. Yet its ability to build a big early lead got hampered when Stone picked up three fouls in the first half, forcing him to sit for long periods of time. In the meantime, Marcellus pulled within three, 32-29, by halftime, fueled by Chaz Hayes, who had 10 of his 24 points in the second quarter. Mike Fox, who finished with 16 points, also made big contributions. Grimes would spend the third quarter regaining control, partly due to Sugamosto, who had eight of his 15 points in that frame. Many different times, the Jamesville-DeWitt/CBA and Fayetteville-Manlius boys swim teams were supposed to open the season before it actually did. Snow, however, kept the Red Rams from facing Mexico or Fulton, while the Hornets saw potential meets against West Genesee and Liverpool moved. When they finally did start last week, though, both would win. J-D/CBA emerged last Tuesday with a 98-81 victory over Weedsport and, 24 hours later, the Hornets smashed past Nottingham 104-77. For the Rams, Eric Jorgensen and Cole Speidel each won a pair of individual races. Jorgensen tore through the 100 freestyle in 49.69 seconds and beat teammate Josh Lacey, 1:51.24 to 1:53.75, in a fast 200 freestyle. As for Speidel, he worked his way to first place in the 100 butterfly in 58.42 seconds and needed 2:12.14 to prevail in the 200 individual medley, while Lacey emerged to win the 500 freestyle in a quick time of 5:03.57.

Garrett Farchione won the 100 backstroke in 1:01.99, while Zach Shaw gained first place in the 100 breaststroke in 1:15.35. Tom Hays prevailed in diving by earning 174.45 points. Then it was F-Mâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s turn, against the Nottingham side with which it shares pool time. And it began with Jack Robinson, Kevin Koh, Ryan Kelley and Will Twichell tearing through the 200 medley relay in 1:43.46, setting the tone for the rest of the meet. Koh edged Luke Oliverio, 23.11 seconds to 23.27, in the 50 freestyle and went on to dominate the 100 butterfly with a time of 54.34 seconds. Oliverio would rebound to win the 100 freestyle in 53.40 seconds. As for Robinson, he held off Kelley to take first in the 200 IM in 2:07.38 and, later in the meet, took 57.01 seconds to earn first place in the 100 backstroke. Kelley dominated his specialty, the 100 breaststroke, winning in 1:03.27. Zach Swanson also won twice, needing 2:01.80 to prevail in the 200 freestyle and taking the 500 freestyle in 5:26.56. Overall, the Gaelic Knights took 28 foul shots and made 20 of them, 13 by Nicole Granteed (who had 15 points) and Natalie Barletta (who got 12 points) as Kayla Kibling had 17 points. Grimes hosts its annual Lady Cobra Invitational on Wednesday and Thursday, playing Watertown IHC in the first round after reigning Class C champion Utica-Notre Dame plays Rochester Mercy. 2010: A year in review Congratulations, Champions! J-D climbs to third straight state Class A title

That towering boys basketball dynasty at JamesvilleDeWitt only grows with each season - and each set of titles earned along the way. It now stands at three consecutive New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class A championships, the latest of them earned Sunday afternoon when the Red Rams beat Newark 59-45 at Glens Falls Civic Center. Overall, it’s the fifth state crown won by J-D, four of them in head coach Bob McKenney’s tenure. It’s reached the point where nothing less than a state championship is expected. Even after the departure of Brandon Triche (to Syracuse University) and Alshwan Hymes (to Canisius), the target was on the Rams from the moment this season got underway. J-D wore that target quite well. From the inside dominance of sophomores DaJuan Coleman and Tyler Cavanaugh to the perimeter play of Lamar Kearse, Zach Firestone, Jailaan Kinsey and Demetrius Mitchell, J-D has emerged as the state’s lone undefeated team - 24 games, 24 wins ...

Early on a sun-drenched Saturday morning at Lakeside Park in Pawling, seven girls from the Fayetteville-Manlius girls cross country team set out in pursuit of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class AA championship. By the time they were done less than 20 minutes later, the state title was safely in the Hornets’ hands again, the fifth straight year it has claimed this big prize. F-M, the nation’s top-ranked team, achieved a perfect score of 15 points, leaving Saratoga Springs, in second place (45 points), and the other seven AA teams far behind as it took yet another big step toward defending its national crown at the Nike Nationals early in December …

Robert Yeazel, pastor of Holy Cross Church. “One of the basics of our program [at CAP] is that we are truly teaching the whole person, not only academic but spiritual,” said Schmidt, noting her students include Buddhists, Muslims and Hindus. “Our children are from all different religious backgrounds, but the parents believe that their children are getting universal value. They don’t look at being Christian as being so different from their [religions]. They see a lot of the same values.” Holy Cross Principal David Wheeler said it is hoped

the two schools will develop a relationship through continued outreach missions, “sharing experiences and sharing cultures.” If it’s up to the children, the partnership is well on its way. From there, students in similar grades either lunched together or gathered in the gym for sundry activities.

Rescue Mission

Best known for providing hot meals to those in need, the Rescue Mission also offers emergency shelter and long-term housing, clothing for all ages and employment resources in the Syracuse area, among other programs. “A $25 donation to the Rescue Mission would provide about 12 meals in our dining facility or one night of emergency shelter,” said Paul LaDolce, communications director of the Syracuse and CNY Rescue Mission. When it comes to feeding the hungry, every penny truly counts: LaDolce said in November of this year, the Rescue Mission served 5,219 more meals than in November 2009, with a 17 percent increase in women and children taking advantage of the Rescue Mission’s hot meals. “Our services are increasing in a very difficult economy that is also impacting the people who support us,” LaDolce added. Do you know the risks of feeding your child a hamburger? Mike and Barbara Kowalcyk didn’t, until their 2 ½-old-son Kevin suddenly died 12 days later from eating an E. coli-infested hamburger. On July 31, 2001, the Kowalcyk’s said Kevin awoke with diarrhea and a mild fever. He was taken to the emergency room where later he was diagnosed with E. coli food poisoning. His kidneys started to fail and he developed Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome, a disorder that often occurs after a gastrointestinal infection with E. coli bacteria. It is most common in children and the most common cause of acute kidney failure in children. Kevin went through a few dialysis procedures; his body swelled and he wasn’t allowed to drink water. All the medication and treatment didn’t help. On Aug. 11, he died. This tragic incident motivated his mother to create Kevin’s Law, which would prevent tainted food from resulting in fatal consequences. By supporting Kevin’s Law, consumers would be fighting for a quality food industry that protects the nation’s families. The main goal of Kevin’s Law is to prevent

factories from producing meat contaminated with E. coli or other deadly pathogens. The United States Department of Agriculture would have the power to shut the factories down that repeatedly violate the law’s requirements. Barbara Kowalcyk is now campaigning to get this bill passed. In the Center for Foodborne Illness Research and Prevention press release she writes, “following the death of my son Kevin in 2001 from an E. coli O157: H7 infection, my family has worked hard to channel our grief into advocating for this new approach, in hopes that it will prevent this kind of tragedy from happening to others.” In 2006, Syracuse University’s campus newspaper, The Daily Orange, wrote a piece on the E. coli outbreak in spinach. One hundred and forty-six cases were reported in 23 states, according to the U.S Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Of these cases, nine were reported in New York state. None of the cases were in Onondaga County; however, the threat was still prominent. The Peanut Corporation of America issued a recall for its peanut butter in January 2009. It wasn’t until two weeks later that the recall was extended to more than 400 products. In this short period of time, a total of eight people died and more than 500 illnesses spread in 43 states. Half of these cases were children. If Kevin’s Law passes, the chance for similar incidents to occur would decrease due to pressure placed on the food industry.
