Last Thursday at Edward Thomas Cigar, Dr. Ron Ommen of Fayetteville and Tony Crocilla of Utica sat in leather armchairs as they enjoyed their cigars. The store held a tasting Sept. 30, premiering a new line of cigars, La Aroma de Cuba Mi Amor, a new line from Ashton Cigars. For more on the story, see page 5.

In less than two years, the village of Manlius will celebrate its bicentennial, and a new park will help mark the occasion. The Manlius Village Board last week agreed to purchase the property at 301 Pleasant St., a home that’s been vacant for four years, to build a bicentennial park. The 105-foot by 153foot corner lot cost just over $20,000, which the village is paying through contingency funds. According to ongov.net, the total market value and assessment are the same at $101,900;

land assessment is $26,000. The plan is to create a green space. “At this point, I envision a beautiful corner pocket park with as many of the mature trees preserved as well as gardens and benches,” said Mayor Mark-Paul Serafin. “The final details will be determined with input from the Parks & Rec Board as well as the Early Village Neighborhood Association.” Village resident Les Ryon, of 305 Pleasant St., said he spearheaded the project some time ago, convincing neighbors and officials of the opportunity to build a bicentennial park. Ryon, a member of the neighborhood association, said a number of neighbors are willing to ease village costs by holding fundraisers such as neighborhood yard sales. Marilyn Jeffery, of 501 Pleasant

The Bicentennial Park will be located on the corner of Pleasant and Moulter streets in the village of Manlius. St., said she too is excited to see this new, positive change. “As a neighborhood, we are going to be helping in making it a park,” said Jeffery, who is also involved with the association. “We’re going to have neighborhood work days to keep the cost down to the village, so that our See Park, page 8

As a cost-savings measure, the DeWitt Town Board hired Mike Kolceski last week as full-time town engineer, effective immediately. He is being paid $1,500 per week, an annual salary of $78,000. Previously the town had been contracting Kolceski’s services between $125 and $150 an hour through O’Brien & Gere. Kolceski had worked as an engineer for more than 40 years at this firm. His principal client had been the town of DeWitt. Sup er vis or Ed Michalenko said the town expects to save between $35,000 and $55,000 a year See Engineer, page 8

‘Escape to Shanghai’

FSC to hold Seventh Annual Wine and Cheese Tasting

JCC to host Holocaust survivor from the Shanghai Ghetto By Tami S. Zimmerman tzimmerman@cnylink.com

SUBMITTED PHOTO

Edie Shafer’s father owned his own cigar and cigarette shop in the Shanghai Ghetto. when she and her family first landed in Hawaii en route to San Francisco, Calif. She laughed as she recalled rolling in and touching it. “There was no grass in the ghetto,” said Shafer, an only child. “It was cement.” She remembers the relentless Shanghai heat, raw sewage running down the middle of roads and the behavior of irrational authority figures. She also remembers standing inside her father’s cigar store, a towel draped over her dad’s shoulders to wipe his brow, and feeling “proud as a peacock” that she too could

have a towel. “My parents were the most important part of my life growing up,” Shafer said. “My father was always willing to help other people … my mother was stronger only in giving me all the love that I needed.” Shafer’s mission in speaking is to urge people to “care for each other, appreciate what we have and be the best person you can be.” For more information about the lecture, call 446-6124 or e-mail shanghaighetto@gmail.com.

It is named for the founder of NCJW and is given to women who have demonstrated exceptional service to both the Jewish community and the community-at-large. Based on both the variety and depth of her service to the greater Syracuse community, Feldman is indeed an exceptionally worthy recipient. This award will be presented Monday Oct. 25 at a dairy luncheon at Justin’s Grill, 6400 Yorktown Circle, East Syracuse. Registration will start at 11:30 a.m., with the program beginning at noon and ending by 1:30 p.m. There is a charge to attend. joy sharing stories around the vineyards and the production of their wines.” Guests may also browse the silent auction which includes a wide selection of items generously donated by area businesses. Almost 20,000 European Jews sought refuge from the Nazis in Japanese-occupied China during World War II, and Edie Shafer was among them. Born in the Shanghai Ghetto in 1941, she spent her first seven years in the only city to which Jews could flee without a visa and gain entry. Though conditions were poor, the Shanghai Ghetto, also known as “the port of last resort,” was a haven, and Shafer considers herself one of the lucky ones because while hers is a story of great difficulty, it is ultimately one of survival. Shafer, now 69 and living in Milwaukee, Wis., will be in Syracuse on Sunday Oct. 24 at the Jewish Community Center in DeWitt, to speak about her experiences in the Shanghai Ghetto. The lecture, to begin at 3 p.m., is free and open to the public, and a reception will follow after the talk. In addition to telling her story as a child refugee, she will also address her adjustment to and gratitude for her life in America. Shafer saw grass for the first time

Worth the wait Slowly, steadily, surely, the time approaches when the vision will be fulfilled. If it seems slow, wait patiently, for it will surely take place. Habakkuk 2:3

For a long time, I silently prayed this verse, with hopes that I would meet the perfect man. When I told my mom I’d like the passage read at mine and Tim’s wedding, she jokingly said that by now I should have had it memorized (I had trouble recalling the exact lines when I tried to retell it to her). A few years ago, I would have been mortified by those words. Now, just slightly. We actually laughed, which tells me I’ve come a long way. On Sept. 10, my boyfriend of almost three years asked me to marry him. We spent an evening in Skaneateles where we wined and dined at Kabuki, an eclectic sushi restaurant in the heart of the village. Later in the evening, he got down on one knee to propose to me; I

Message from the mayor remained standing, which put us at eye level. Most of my friends have been married for years now; they met their husbands in their 20s or early 30s. Some are on their second marriage and others are through with having children. We’re just beginning. At 40 years of age, I have everything to look forward to: a wedding to plan, a marriage to live, and God-willing, children to love. There were times over the years, however, when it was tough to watch my friends living the life I so desperately wanted for myself. There’s a time for everything, and mine had not yet come. During my single years I had the opportunity to grow and learn about myself, who I am and who I want to be. When Tim and I met, several of the puzzle pieces had already fallen into place. It took time to get where we are today, but it was well worth the wait.

Cigars: a tradition of sophistication By Joseph Raite Last Thursday at Edward Thomas Cigar, Dr. Ron Ommen of Fayetteville and Tony Crocilla of Utica sat in leather armchairs as they enjoyed their cigars. Ommen, a dentist, and Crocilla, a chef, personify the sophistication of cigar culture. In a New York that stigmatizes tobacco use, health and taste can stand at odds. But at Edward Thomas Cigar, these affairs are in respectful balance, nurturing an atmosphere of relaxation and camaraderie that intersects at cigars and baseball. Erik Francey and Brent Stedmen love cigars and baseball. They brought these worlds together in a fine gentlemen’s establishment in April of 2005 when the doors of Edward Thomas Cigar were opened for business. They are tobacconists in the likeness of the New York City mainstay Nat Sherman, but without the three-piece suits. “It’s a barbershop of old,” said Francey, buoyed amongst the smoke of handmade cigars by the talk of business and baseball. More than a storefront, Edward Thomas Cigar is a club, with membership fees ranging from $30 to $50 a month. Benefits include personal lockers and product dis-

counts. Still, Edward Thomas Cigar is open to the public and offers a comfortable space to enjoy its many fine products. At a tasting held the evening of Sept 30, Edward Thomas Cigar premiered La Aroma de Cuba Mi Amor, a new line from Ashton Cigars. Ashton sales representative Andy Green made the trip in from New Hampshire to introduce the cigars. He is an eloquent man, who, dressed for the occasion, coolly walked patrons through the tasting process. Chocolate, almonds, coconut and lime-hinted rum were used to build up in ladder-like fashion to the taste and relaxation of Mi Amor, in a sophisticated lime-in-the-coconut manner. A bite of the 70 percent cacao dark chocolate serves as a palate cleanser. Take a sip of rum. After another bite of chocolate come the almonds, the oils of which dry your palate. Take a sip of rum. After more chocolate and almonds, a pinch of coconut shavings will contour the flavors inherent to the Mi Amor. Take a sip, light up and enjoy. Connoisseurs talk of cigars as if they were fine wine, and tobacconists are the caregivers of this culture. “We are experts,” said Francey, “who tailor to the needs of our customers.” In a New York that generally opposes tobacco, business is tough. Francey said there’s about 75 percent tax on their tobacco products. Not to mention the stigma that is attached by the anti-smoking campaigns. But the culture of cigars has more to offer. Robert Byrne and Evan Britton, partners

Carol Baldwin to make appearance at Dazzle in Manlius In conjunction with the grand opening of New Dimensions’ new retail store Dazzle in Manlius, breast cancer survivor and charity founder Carol M. Baldwin is being honored and will be making a personal appearance at the store from 2 to 6 p.m. Monday Oct. 11. Several years ago Lois Ross, owner and president of New Dimensions, had friends and family that had been affected by breast cancer and wanted to take charitable action. Most important to her was choosing a charity that directly benefited people in her own community. In 2005, Ross decided to create a line of breast cancer awareness products and partnered with the

at Byrne Advertising, handle the marketing for Edward Thomas Cigar and emphasize the timeless traditions of tobacco while encouraging responsible smoking. Responsible smoking is ingrained in the cigar culture. It entails an armchair, an ashtray and a cold beverage, said Ommen, while always in moderation. In other words, it isn’t smoking for the sake of smoking. Cigars are like any other fine good. They are cherished for their sophistication and taste. And as long as there are people like Ommen and Crocilla, cigars will continue to be enjoyed. For the most part, the talk at Edward Thomas Cigar that night was about baseball. And as always, baseball is unpredictable. As the night wound down, so did the Yankees game. They were playing the Rays. In the sixth inning, hearty banter sank to shouts through the hickory smoke. The Yanks gave up their lead and the Rays put seven runs on the board. No victory stogies that night, only those in honor of camaraderie. Edward Thomas Cigar is located at 210 Brooklea Drive in Fayetteville. It is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sundays. Contact the store at 637-1688 or visit edwardthomascigar.com. A percentage of the sales from this line are donated to the charity and over the last five years nearly $40,000 has been contributed to the fund, which goes into breast cancer research right here in Central New York at University Upstate Medical Center. The “Think Pink” line was started with a few select products and has grown to include nearly 100 items, from t-shirts to jewelry, many of which can be found in a special section of Dazzle. This event is open to the public and the community is encouraged to show their support of Baldwin, Ross and their effective partnership.

Local woman creates home decor, platters out of melted glass bottles

By Caitlin Donnelly cdonnelly@cnylink.com

Save your wine and beer bottles: they could end up as wall decorations or serving platters at your next party. For nine years, Alexius Jones has been melting down glass bottles and creating artwork from the basement of her Oran home. Her one-person operation, I’m Melting… Glass, sells unique glass ornaments, cheese platters and other artwork. Jones began her creative stint working with fabrics and sewing when she was young. As an adult, she made wire creations in her free time before she switched over to glass melting for good. Never having any formal art training, Jones has perfected her craft through trial and error. Her best selling item, the cheese platter, is made from recycled glass bottles collected from friends, relatives, “dumpster diving” and her own consumption. “If I think a wine is worth buying, we’ll drink that and then I’ll melt down the bottle, but I’m not about to go out and buy all that Gray Goose,” Jones said. She gets the rest of the bottles from friends in all the right places: high-end bottles from waitresses at restaurants, a variety of beer bottles from a SUNY Cortland employee, and wine bottles from friendly wineries. Jones described the bottle melting process as a two-day event. First, the labels are peeled off and the bottles are washed

and left to dry for a full day. The bottles are then placed in the two large kilns in her basement with decorative wire placed in the neck, where they are melted at approximately 1,500 degrees for five hours. Once cooled, Jones reattaches the labels to the bottom of the now-flattened bottle with a “secret” epoxy. A typical “batch” consists of twelve bottles. The finished cheese platters are sold with a cheese spreader for $20 to $25 each and can be used for serving or decoration. I’m Melting… Glass also features glass ornaments, suncatchers, wind chimes, candleholders and mobiles made from sheets of glass purchased from Camillus Stained Glass. These vary in price. Jones attends two craft shows each month from May through December throughout Central New York, were she sells most of her work. During a typical show, Jones will sell approximately 200 items. While it is Jones that creates the artwork, she credits some of her success to her husband, Don. “He’s such a good sport about it all, I really couldn’t do it without him,” she said. In addition to helping with the shows, Don acts as “dumpster diver” for new bottles, and repairman when the kilns needs fixing. It was also her husband that suggested she leave her job with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society earlier this year to pursue her passion full time. While nervous about the transi-

Until then, visit immeltingglass.com to view Jones’s artwork and for more information. Caitlin Donnelly is editor of Gear Up, Eagle Newspapers.

DCL to offer career planning in October

Pacifica Quartet to perform Oct. 9 The Pacifica Quartet will open the 201011 concert series presented by the Syracuse Friends of Chamber Music at 8 p.m. Saturday Oct. 9. The concert will take place at Lincoln Middle School, 1613 James St. just west of Teall Ave. Ever since the four musicians got together in 1994, the Pacifica Quartet has been winning just about every honor possible for a string quartet. Last year, they became the quartet-in-residence of the prestigious series of New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, the position held for 43 years by the venerable Guarneri String Quartet. They were also named 2009 “Ensemble of the Yearâ€? by Musical America, and won a Grammy for Best Chamber Music Performance in 2009. Among their other distinctions are an Avery Fisher Career Grant, Chamber Music America’s Cleveland Quartet Award, and the Naumberg Chamber Music Award. The Pacifica’s Syracuse program will include two pieces from each of these monumental cycles: the String Quartet No. 3 in F Major by Shostakovich, and the String Quartet in C Major, Op .59, No. 3 by Beethoven. The concert will open with the String Quartet Op. 41 in A minor by Robert Schumann, in the composer’s bicentennial year. Other ensembles in this year’s Syracuse Friends of Chamber Music series are: •

Chaddock said he hopes other school districts will bring back their freshman teams, but added that he thinks some just consider

freshman teams as nothing more than giving mediocre students one more year to play. “The proof is that I had 25 girls in the past two years move on to the JV or varsity level, he said, adding that freshman teams help the younger players and challenge those who need to play at a higher level. “I’m going to give them the tools to help them be a better student of the game, better skilled player and maybe they’ll move on. If I can instill some tradition, some passion about the F-M soccer program and the pride in it, and I can get them to the next level, then I’ve done my job.

F-M, CBA soccer hold ‘Pink Out’ at Swan Pond All the soccer teams from Fayetteville-Manlius and Christian Brothers Academy gathered together on Saturday at Swan Pond in a “Pink Out to raise money for the breast-cancer awareness and the American Cancer Society. And as it turned out, both the occasion and the games proved quite memorable. Each game went into overtime, with the F-M and the CBA girls ending up even at 2-2 and the boys Hornets getting on the board in OT to top the Brothers 1-0. Organized by senior captain Brian Ward, the event included a T-shirt sale built up over several weeks. More than 400 pink long-sleeve shirts were sold at $15 per shirt, with $5 of those proceeds going to the American Cancer Society. Also, a team of 10 F-M teachers and administrators took part in Sunday’s “Making Strides walk that the ACS organized in downtown Syracuse. Many of those pink shirts were on when the games got underway in front of a large, enthusiastic crowd that kept building through the night. Going first in the afternoon, the F-M girls quickly went ahead 1-0 against the defending Section III Class AA champion Brothers, as Morgan Same earned the goal. Less than a minute laer, though, Alexis Koval answered for CBA, making it a 1-1 tie. A new star emerged for the Hornets as freshman Alexis Muraco, newly called up from the JV ranks, powered a 30-

yards shot into the top of the net midway through the first half as the Hornets regained the lead at 2-1. Again, Koval answered, her goal in the 34th minute leaving the two sides even going into halftime. And there it would stay, despite a week’s worth of scoring chances. First CBA controlled the ball in the second half, and then F-M got a series of pushes. None of them worked, even with 20 minutes of overtime, as Courtney Henderson made 12 saves and Hornets counterpart Nina Quigley had 13 saves. Both goalies made high-risk charges for stops, and they proved successful. As night fell, the F-M and CBA boys took the field. Both sides possessed tremendous defenses, and they would seize control here, as 80 minutes of regulation passed without a goal. CBA, who had recorded several shutouts in OHSL Freedom division play, found itself trying to fend off several waves of Hornets attackers. Not only did the back line stay cool, but David Anderson proved spectacular in the net, recording 18 saves. By contrast, F-M keeper Ryan Carter would earn six saves. So they remained 0-0 going into overtime, a sudden-victory format. Again, the Hornets brought pressure – and this time it worked as Joe Mahr fed the ball to the middle, and fellow senior Kris Alestalo poked a close-range shot past Anderson to win it. In the week leading up to Saturday, the CBA and F-M teams earned one win apiece. The boys Hornets first beat Central Square 5-0 last Tuesday night as Mahr and

Grimes boys soccer tops Ludden, Cato By Phil Blackwell pblackwell@cnylink.com Stuck at 2-5 in the OHSL Patriot division, the Bishop Grimes boys soccer team started to climb back to the .500 mark, thanks to a pair of big wins. Of them, the most exciting was Friday’s game against Bishop Ludden, a back-andforth affair that the Cobras pulled out, 4-3, over the Gaelic Knights. Three days earlier, Grimes went to Cato-Meridian and beat the Blue Devils 6-0. The Cobras were constantly on the offensive, bolting out to a 4-0 halftime lead as it spread the spoils around. On the girls side, Bishop Grimes was 6-3 going into

last Tuesday’s game against Fabius-Pompey, but found all kinds of trouble in a 4-1 loss to the Falcons. What was a 1-0 game broke open in the second half because F-P’s Steve Ray proved unstoppable. Ray torched the Cobras with a three-goal hat trick and also assisted on Janelle Flanagan’s tally as Flanagan finished with two assists. Grimes only could break through when Samantha Schaefer converted in the second half, Ellen Callahan getting credit for the assist. Ashley Morgan earned six saves. The Cobras’ Thursday game at Onondaga got rained out. For the full story, go to cnylink.com.

Alestalo both finished with two goals. Ward added one goal and one assist as Mike Zazzara, Anthony Restante and Aaron Epling earned assists. F-M’s girls team ripped Central Square 8-1 last Tuesday at Swan Pond, getting most of its offense in the second half. Marri Ryu finished with two goals and two assists, with Cheyenne Hall also find-

ing the net twice. Morgan Same and Allison Baynes each had one goal and two assists as Rebecca Bowyer and Bri Dolan earned single goals. Melissa Case had one assist. CBA’s girls beat Cortland 4-1 that same night at Alibrandi Stadium. Koval and Eva Gordon accounted for the goals, each finding the net twice as Michelle Wiese and Kara Modliszewski joined

Koval in the assist column. Two nights later, the boys Brothers returned to the field against Mexico on the Alibrandi turf, enduring the rain (which postponed the CBA girls game at Mexico) and blanking the Tigers 6-0. Matt Marzocchi and Andrew DePerro received a showcase on this night, and they didn’t waste it. Following a 1-0 first half, Marzocchi

helped the Brothers pull clear, eventually picking up a threegoal hat trick, those passes coming from DePerro, who set a career mark with four assists. Joel Castellini finished with one goal and one assist, while Mark Temnycky and Ryan Pond also landing goals as Adrian Asuncion contributed an assist.

By Phil Blackwell pblackwell@cnylink.com Within a 48-hour span, the FayettevilleManlius and East Syracuse-Minoa field hockey teams would both collide with four-time defending Section III champion Cazenovia. Going first, F-M could not shake off a tough first half, and never solved Lakers star Tori Widrick in the course of a 4-1 defeat. Cazenovia was steaming about its first loss of the season (to Camden on Sept. 24),

and F-M took the brunt of that heat, falling behind 3-0 by halftime before Hannah Bucklin earned a second-half goal, Lindsay Trachtenberg getting the assist. Then ESM took its shot at Cazenovia on its own turf on a soggy Thursday night. The Spartans ESM had already gone to Cazenovia on Sept. 7, taking an 8-1 defeat in its first varsity game since 1989. Here, the Spartans again got on the board in the second half – and again, it was only after Cazenovia had decided matters early in a 9-2 loss. For the full story, go to cnylink.com.

J-D golfers topple unbeaten CBA By Phil Blackwell pblackwell@cnylink.com Turning toward the regular-season homestretch, the challenges grew for all of the area’s four boys high school golf teams – and it wasn’t helped by the Thursday downpour that postponed matches and saturated area courses. Prior to that, in of the season’s biggest matches, Jamesville-DeWitt stood right up to its neighbors from Christian Brothers Academy, ending the Brothers’ eight-match win streak in a 196-197 thriller last Tuesday at Drumlins Country Club’s West course. A day earlier, CBA romped through the rain, topping East Syracuse-Minoa’s Orange team 208-273 at Drumlins West. Connor Harrington shot a 38, with Jack Bellardine (40) close behind. Kyle Reader led the Spartans with a 48. And the Brothers would beat Tully 189-211 on Wednesday as Fuller, Chris Bousquet and Dan Lambert

each finished at 37. J-D did not have a letdown, routing Mexico 195-268 on Wednesday as Davis again went to the forefront, shooting a 34 at LaFayette Country Club, five shots better than Burns and LaClair. Tyler Kirwin (41) and Tom Schulte (42) also played well. Fayetteville-Manlius took a 9-2 record into last Monday’s match against Auburn, but lost 200-206 to the Maroons at Highland Park. The Hornets bounced back Wednesday, beating Henninger 186-216 at Drumlins as Ryan Fero and Tyler Ramie both went low with equal rounds of 35. Millimaci improved to a 37 as Nick Santoro posted a 38. ESM’s Blue team returned Wednesday and beat Cortland 213-227 as Ben Loder posted a 40 at the Links at Erie Village. ESM Orange fell to Phoenix 208-239, Nick Drogo shooting a 45 in front of Colin Sloan and Matt Barbini, who shot 47 apiece. For the full story, go to cnylink.com.

F-M boys volleyball sweeps Liverpool Though the third game proved closer, F-M still closed out Liverpool 25-20. At just 1-5 on the season, the Fayetteville-Manlius boys volleyball team needed a spark – and got it last Monday night with a three-game sweep of the Liverpool Warriors. In top form from the start, the Hornets claimed the first game 25-11 and rolled to a 25-13 victory in the second game.

Though another point got snatched by the opposition, the Fayetteville-Manlius girls tennis team still kept its epic win streak going during last Tuesday’s 6-1 conquest of Baldwinsville. In the toughest of four doubles matches, Olivia Calancie and Kara Goldberg put together a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Hannah Mautz and Colleen Morgan. Otherwise, the teams of Rhiannon Iorio-Katie Muller, Meghan Muraco-Caitlin Welker and Adair DouglasJessica Guarino lost just one game apiece in their sweeps. Carly Romano saw an early lead slip away in a 4-6, 6-1, 6-0 defeat to Kahlei Reisinger, but Sienna Susko worked hard to beat Amari Pollard 6-3, 6-3, and Allison Vizgaitis had little trouble in a 6-1, 6-2 win over Rachel Taylor. CBA moved its mark to 5-1 by shutting out Chittenango 7-0, winning every set as the Bears rested several of its top players in the non-league match. Then the Brothers shut out Cortland 7-0 on Wednesday, rolling through most of the matches, though Bulman and Kitts needed three sets to beat Kim Cornell and Devon Tennant 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. But CBA lost its Friday rematch to Chit-

getting equal production in each half. On Thursday night, J-D visited Chittenango, glad to be on artificial turf amid all the rain – or at least they thought they would play. The rain got so pervasive that both teams were sent off the field, not to return. Back in action on Saturday, J-D rolled to a 3-0 victory over Marcellus. Though there were few shots taken, the Rams seemed to convert most of them, getting away in the late going after posting a 1-0 first-half lead. A big week awaits both J-D teams, who play Cortland on Tuesday, then have showdowns with CBA on back-to-back nights – the boys Thursday night at Alibrandi Stadium, the girls at home on Friday afternoon. Both teams beat the Brothers earlier this season – the boys in a modest 2-0 manner on Sept. 3, the girls in a 9-0 romp on Sept. 16. For the full story, go to cnylink.com.

ESM soccer teams battle through conditions By Phil Blackwell pblackwell@cnylink.com Just as it hit the halfway point of the regular season, the East Syracuse-Minoa boys soccer team made it back to the .500 mark. That came in the Spartans’ 1-0 victory over Homer last Tuesday night, a game that saw terrific defense on both sides. Heavy rains pushed the Spartans’ trip to Phoenix to Saturday morning, but the delay didn’t hurt ESM as it jumped all over the Firebirds in an 8-1 romp. Steadily, ESM broke down Phoenix’s defense, especially in the second half, when it scored six times to pull way from its early modest edge. ESM’s girls team could not get on the board in last Tuesday’s 3-0 defeat to Homer. Casie

Aurichio finished with 10 saves and held the Trojans to a single first-half goal. But Homer got away in the late going as Jessica Parmiter (one goal, one assist) and Emma Porter (two assists) led the way. Back home Thursday to meet Phoenix, ESM did more than endure the rain – it thrived in it, getting to double digits on the board in a 10-0 romp over the Spartans. A wild first half saw ESM continually tear through Phoenix’s defense and score, not stopping until it had posted a 7-0 advantage. And it kept going as Amanda Wall, with a three-goal hat trick, and Sarah Britton, with two goals and one assist, led the way. Both ESM teams have games this week against Chittenango and Fulton. MPH boys soccer blanks Ludden By Phil Blackwell pblackwell@cnylink.com A 7-0 start pushed the Manlius-Pebble Hill boys soccer team to the no. 3 spot in the state Class C rankings – and it might not stop there. The Trojans met Bishop Ludden for the second time in September last Tuesday afternoon, this time on its home field, and didn’t stop until it had ripped the Gaelic Knights 5-0. Unlike that first meeting on Sept. 7, MPH got on the board in the first half, and did so

twice as it claimed a 2-0 halftime edge. And the margin kept growing as a well-balanced attack emerged. MPH’s girls team moved back above .500 (4-3) with a 1-0 win over LaFayette last Tuesday, the only goal coming in the first half as Haviland Hawkins converted. The Lancers had all kinds of chances to pull even, but Katie Blanford’s 10 saves preserved the shutout. Just as quickly, though, the Trojans fell back, losing 2-1 to Fabius-Pompey on Friday. Coping Mechanisms for Untreated Hearing Loss Untreated hearing loss can have devastating effects on the social lives of the hearing impaired, their friends and their family. Hearing loss results in VLJQLĂ€FDQW FRPPXQLFDWLYH GLIĂ€FXOWLHV social isolation, frustration and depression. Hearing-impaired individuals adopt a variety of strategies to cope with these problems. Here are some of the most common strategies that individuals with hearing loss use to cope.

Asking others to repeat When friends and family members are asked to repeat what they have said, they take on increasing amounts of responsibility for maintaining accurate communication. Family members may become frustrated because of the energy it takes to have a conversation. As more misunderstandings occur, the level of frustration increases. Communication becomes less frequent and the content of the conversations becomes more simplistic. Eventually, conversations are initiated only when it is absolutely necessary for basic needs.

Increased attention Hearing-impaired individuals hear only parts of words and sentences. This is like trying to read a sentence with words and letters missing. Turn everything up At home, the TV may be turned up louder than a partner can tolerate. When family members complain, the hearing-impaired individual may begin to use a separate room for these activities. Such isolation can strain relationships.

Smile a lot Many individuals attempt to conceal their hearing loss by pretending to understand what someone has said. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Keeping her promise Founder and CEO of organization fighting breast cancer pens memoir

Growing up, Nancy G. Brinker and her sister Suzy were inseparable, with the elegant, socially poised Suzy serving as younger sister Nancy’s best friend and role model. Then in 1977, at the age of 33, Suzy was stricken with breast cancer. Three years later, having endured an uninformed doctor, surgeries that left her feeling mutilated and stripped of her sexuality and fighting through several grueling courses of chemotherapy and radiation, Susan G. Komen lay dying. Toward the end, she begged her sister to do something, anything, to make sure that other women with breast cancer would not have to suffer as she had from the ravages of this deadly disease. “Promise me, Nanny,” she said. “Promise me you won’t let it go on like this.” Her heart broken, Nancy promised: “I swear, Suzy. Even if it takes the rest of my life.” At that moment, Susan G. Komen for the Cure was born. “Promise Me: How a Sister’s Love Launched the Global Movement to End Breast Cancer,” released in hardcover last month, is the story of how that vow launched Nancy on a 30-year-long mission to change the way the world thought of, spoke of, and treated breast cancer. Brinker’s unparalleled success at turning $200 and a list of would-be donors into a movement that has saved the lives of millions of women was recognized by President Obama in August 2009, when he awarded Brinker the Presidential Medal of Freedom. “In the months after making that promise,” the President noted, “Nancy lay awake at night wondering if one person can really make a difference. Nancy’s life is the answer.” By sharing “Promise Me” with your own sister or your loved one, together you can join the global movement to end breast cancer forever. Source: komencny.org

More early detection – nearly 75 percent of women over 40 years old now receive regular mammograms, the single most effective tool for detecting breast cancer early (in 1982, less than 30 percent received a clinical exam).

More hope – the five-year survival rate for breast cancer, when caught early before it spreads beyond the breast, is now 98 percent (compared to 74 percent in 1982). More research – the federal government now devotes more than $900 million each year to breast cancer research, treatment and prevention (compared to $30 million in 1982). More survivors – America’s 2.5 million breast cancers survivors, the largest group of cancer survivors in the U.S., are a living

Mammography saves lives

The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program is urging women to get mammograms. “October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a significant time to remind women to get mammograms,” says Hillary Rutter, the director of the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program “I hope that this month women will take the time to make an appointment for a mammogram. Approximately 95 percent of all mammograms prove to be normal.” For more information and to locate an accredited mammography facility nearby, call the Adelphi New York Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program at 800-877-8077. Callers can also get emotional support from the hotline’s specially trained volunteers, most of who are women who have had breast cancer. The hotline has been in existence for 30 years. It is a project of the Adelphi University School of Social Work on Long Island. All services are free. The web site is: adelphi.edu/nysbreastcancer.

Hematology Oncology Associates (HOA) offers our patients a wide variety of treatments. These range from standard of care treatments, which have been proven effective, to a variety of clinical trials in which investigational medications are given with or compared to a standard of care to aid in the discovery of future cancer therapies. Currently, we are accruing patients to over 80 different studies primarily through research administered by the National Cancer Institute. For over 24 years, HOA has been the recipient of a grant called the Community Clinical Oncology Program (CCOP) that aims to provide cutting edge research opportunities to communities throughout the nation. To compliment what is available through CCOP, we also participate in a few studies with pharmaceutical companies. Additionally, we have authored and initiated several studies ourselves. Our participation and initiative in oncology research has garnered national attention and several awards for excellence. To our surprise, word of our outstanding research program has recently reached around the globe. Yair Dotan is much like any of our other patients who participate in research. He comes in for doctor’s appointments, meets with his research team, and receives an experimental drug for prostate cancer. However, unlike many of our patients, Dotan travels from Tel-Aviv, Israel, to our office in East Syracuse to participate in a trail sponsored by Cougar Biotechnology, Inc. called COU-AA-302. After trying conventional treatments in Israel without success, Dotan decided to actively help his doctors find another treatment for his progressive disease. It was through the website, clinicaltrials.gov, that he discovered the Cougar study, as well as facilities that were participating in this research. Through the website, he was able to contact the director of the study who suggested several clinics where this research was being conducted. Dotan’s first choice was to go to an oncology center at UCLA in Los Angeles, California. He was also considering hematology/ oncology centers in Atlanta, Georgia, as well as Syracuse. Unfortunately, he discovered there would be a significant delay in meeting with doctors and researchers at UCLA. This wait meant a delay in treatment that Dolan felt was unacceptable. After several emails and lengthy phone conversations across the ocean with Colleen Duchano, our research RN, Dotan chose our very own Hematology Oncology Associates of Central New York. This was an easy choice as Dotan was able to meet with Dr. Gullo and begin the process of study treatment within one week of his initial contact with HOA. As an international patient who is thrilled with his care here at HOA, Dotan has some advice to share with all of us: “Be happy and optimistic, and always “be a part of your own care. Dotan shares that he is not frightened by his disease—rather he makes the most out of every day and takes it all in stride. He feels optimistic, fortunate and grateful as he is love and supported by his devoted wife, See HOA, next page

Home care: Essential to health care Organized home care began more than a century ago and its essence has remained constant — it improves the quality of life by enabling individuals to live with dignity and independence within the comfort and security of their own homes during times of illness, disability and recuperation. There are more than 7 million Americans ranging in age from newborns to the elderly that receive home care for both acute and long-term needs. By 2040, the number of Americans over the age of 80 will triple to 26.2 million.
