Duane Hitchings sat perched in a director’s chair looking out into a sea of young faces that anxiously waited to hear his life story. He’s performed with the likes of Alice Cooper, Jimi Hendrix, Miles Davis and Janis Joplin, yet this gig was quite different from what the musician and songwriter was accustomed to. On Oct. 8, the South Onondaga-native was asked to speak at the Manlius Pebble Hill School, the descendent of his high school alma mater, The Manlius School. Hitchings was in town for the Music Industry Conference and the Syracuse Area Music Awards (SAMMYs), where he received the lifetime achievement award, and agreed to make a stop at

the school to talk about his successful career. During the lecture, Hitchings started from the beginning: Having grown up on a dairy farm with a wonderful mom, dad and sister, he learned to play piano at age 5. By 15, he was playing in rock bands with 19- and 20-year-olds, and failing his junior year at Onondaga Central High School. It was then that he was sent to the Manlius School, a military academy for boys. By the time he graduated from the Manlius School in 1962, Hitchings knew music was his future, so he attended the San Francisco Conservatory before transferring to Syracuse University, and finally the Philadelphia Conservatory of Music, where he studied See Hitchings, page 8

On Oct. 12, 2000, the USS Cole was attacked by Al-Qaeda terrorists in the Yemeni port of Aden. Seventeen sailors were killed, 39 were injured. In the days that followed, crew members worked tirelessly to keep the ship afloat, and since the attack, the USS Cole has resumed its duties and is regularly deployed. On July 16, Commander Andrew Ehlers was appointed commanding officer of the missile destroyer. Ehlers, a 1989 Fayetteville-Manlius graduate, is the 10th to take command of the ship, and is responsible for its overall safety and welfare. He oversees 170 crew members. “I was pretty honored because it is a ship

with history,” said Ehlers, emphasizing the heroism of the crew in the days following the attack. “[The crew members] refused to give up the ship, [which was then] rebuilt and put back into service. We sail today because sailors saved the ship. It’s our responsibility to keep the ship going and keep it operating and ensure their efforts weren’t in vain.” Additionally, the ship is a symbol, he said, of our resolve as a nation in the global war on terror. Seventeen brass stars displayed in the mess line, or cafeteria, honor the sailors who died during the bombing. It’s called the Hall of Heroes, Ehlers said. “One of the primary areas affected was the mess line where we serve food,” he said. See USS Cole, page 8

Community news ‘A Marine Story’

Village, town to explore shared services

“Don’t ask, don’t tell,” a controversial policy that continues to result in men and women being ejected from the military because of their sexual orientation, is the focus of an independent film set to premier Oct. 22 at the Palace Theatre in Eastwood. Fayetteville-Manlius 2003 graduate Paris Pickard co-produced and stars in the movie, “A Marine Story,” directed by Ned Farr. It depicts the life of a young woman who runs with a rough crowd, is arrested and consequently forced to change her ways. She’s given a choice between jail and the military and, choosing the military, she is paired up with Alexandra, a former Marine battling her own demons. Eagle Bulletin Editor Tami S. Zimmerman had the opportunity to interview Pickard about her stance on the movie, the policy and why the Palace Theatre should be packed with people next weekend. EB: What inspired you to make this movie? PP: As a co-producer and actress in this film what inspired my involvement was the chance to tell a very important story. I was intrigued by the relationships and the emotional struggles that the characters endured. EB: Where do you personally stand with the policy? PP: Personally, I am against the Don’t Ask Don’t Tell policy. I think it is a blatant prejudice to ask a person to follow a different set of rules purely based on their sexuality (that really can’t be argued) and that type of inequality is unconstitutional. No person giving up so much for their country already should be asked to give up their chance at happiness as well. EB: Is this movie based on familiar or personal experience? PP: The writer/director did have a lot of contact with service members and did research to make sure his storytelling was an accurate account of what a gay service member would experience, but this story is based on many different people. But no, Ned is not involved in the military and is in fact a straight married man. He’s actually married to my co-star Dreya Weber. He equates his involvement with this issue to his parents’ involvement in the civil rights movement. They marched on Washington, this is how he marches for equality.

Paris Pickard EB: Please tell me about your background in acting and producing. PP: My background in acting started at a local level here at F-M. I was involved in theater and acted in the fall play when I was in high school. I also took part in the National Shakespeare Competition in which I represented F-M all the way to the national level in New York City. When I graduated from F-M in 2003, I went on to Emerson College in Boston for my BFA in film directing. I have spent the majority of my time concentrating on directing. I met the writer/director of [this] film by chance and he liked my look and asked me to audition. I came on as a producer a few months later. In addition to independent films, I also work as an art department coordinator on films for Sony Pictures such as “Death at a Funeral,” “Friends with Benefits” and the upcoming “Burlesque” with Christina Aguilera and Cher. I have also worked in production on Ron Howard’s “Angels and Demons” and Oscar-nominated “Frost/Nixon.” EB: What would you tell people about this movie that would motivate them to see it? PP: This film is not what you’re expecting. The film tells the story of a woman who is forced to leave the military and finds herself in the small town that she grew up in. When she meets a troubled girl in her late teens the pair works together to find their places in the world. It is a compassionate film about a woman with a deep patriotism who wishes to serve her country. We’re not pushing agendas, just telling stories. If my Dad liked it, I think most people will.

The village of East Syracuse and the town of DeWitt are looking for ways to reduce costs and improve efficiency by exploring regional opportunities to expand shared services. The East Syracuse Board of Trustees agreed Oct. 4 to enter into a $27,500 local government efficiency study, which is covered by a $25,000 grant awarded from the Department of State. The town of DeWitt and the village of East Syracuse are each required to match 10 percent of the $25,000. The study will include interviews, data collection and look into alternative approaches, and will examine 10 areas: property tax assessment, planning and zoning, judicial courts, snow removal, parks and recreation, water services and operations, road work, code enforcement, shared financial officer and regional ambulance service. “We’re going to take a hard look at ways to become more efficient,” said Mayor Danny Liedka. The study is being conducted by the Center for Governmental Research, Inc. Neither municipalities are bound to take its recommendations but still must provide the DOS with study results. In other news: • A public hearing is set for Monday Nov. 1 to

add a three-way stop at the intersection of East First and Second streets, and South Center and Johnson streets. DPW Superintendent Ron Russell said that changes at this intersection near Big 4 Tire appear like a “T.” Stop signs would afford better control over the increase in traffic, he said. • The board approved for Justice Donald Benack to apply for a court grant to install automatic door openers for front door entrances, thus making them handicap-accessible, and also to obtain a flat-screen television to be used in the courtroom for jury trials and codes cases. The television would also be a useful tool in meetings with court clerks and magistrates, Benack said. • The East Syracuse Fire Department has an inventory surplus of Hi- and Lo-Band radios, which it plans to offer other fire departments for approximately $1,050 total. The department's radios were replaced in April with the countywide system upgrade. Jefferson County, however, just upgraded to this previous system. Fire Chief Michael Cramer reported that the department recently received a $1,000 grant check from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation for the new radios the department already See Village, page 8

F-M Pop Warner Cheer: Onward and upward This weekend was packed with activities for my family – a birthday party, another family party, a football game and, last but not least, Cheerfest 2010, held Sunday at the OnCenter. Fall is like that – too many events crammed into a few short weeks – and sometimes it can be overwhelming. So it was with a sense of weathering the storm that I entered the packed stands at Syracuse’s War Memorial, joining the queue of cheer family and friends. My husband and I took our seats, prepared for a long afternoon of spirit-filled performances by girls in brightly colored uniforms who are perfectly matched, from their sleekly-coifed hair topped by large bows to the tips of their bright white cheer sneakers. My daughter Cassidy, at 8, is actually a cheer veteran in her fourth year with Fayetteville-Manlius Pop Warner. It is, however, the first year that she is old enough to be part of a competing team. The thought of Cassidy and her teammates up there, in front of a large crowd as they faced off against the other teams in their division, had me on pins and needles. I (and the other parents, I’m sure) wanted so badly for them to do well. The girls and their amazing coaches and junior advisors had been working tirelessly since late summer for this moment – their time to shine. It turned out that Cassidy’s team would be first to perform – a good thing on the one hand, because they could get it over with and relax while they watch the other teams compete, but bad on the other, because there is always the fear that the judges might be conservative with their scoring at the start. The announcer introduced the team and the girls took their positions on the floor. As they waited for the start; you could feel the tension in the air. Their cheer and dance routines were nearly flawless, and they were so excited when they got back to their seats. Now, we only had to wait until the end – four hours later – to see how we did.

In the meantime, we watched team after team in all the divisions compete, including the other 12 teams in Cassidy’s division; they were very good, which made us very nervous. F-M’s older team also performed; they were excellent! Then, the moment of truth. Only the top four in each division would go on to the next level – competing in Albany. Cassidy’s division winners were announced first – we sat as winning team number four, three and two received their red ribbons. Could it be that we didn’t even make the top four? I had nothing with which to gauge this possibility, as this was all new to me. Then, the booming announcer’s voice said, “The League Champions for Junior Pee Wee are…drumroll please…F-M!” and we went wild! The girls were jumping up and down and hugging each other and their coaches and nothing could compare to the sheer rush of knowing that not only did the girls do their best, but did the best in their division. The older F-M team also won their division. This experience, for Cassidy, has been a rewarding one so far. It has taught her discipline, camaraderie and the importance of working as a team towards a goal. I’ve learned some things also, about both my daughter and myself. I’ve learned that my daughter can be very focused and determined when it comes to achieving a goal and that she is much more confident of her abilities than I was at that age. I’ve learned that I don’t just want my daughter to win. I want her to know what it’s like to be part of something bigger than herself; something that benefits from her talents; something she loves and can claim for herself. I feel these lessons are important, confidence-building ones that will help shape the young lady she is already becoming. So, on to Albany they will go. Win or lose, they will do it together. And I will be proud.

Random Thoughts: Hockey time once more Cold weather is starting to seep into our collective consciences. Polo shirts, sandals and shorts are out. Sweaters, boots and flannels are in. And the National Hockey League’s eight-month marathon is underway again. Much of the off-season talk centered, as usual, around contracts. Especially the 15-year, $100-million monster the New Jersey Devils gave to Ilya Kovalchuk that was signed, voided, then signed again as most of the other franchises watched in horror. Granted, talking about a player and a contract sure beat the Phoenix nightmare of a year ago, but given that the Coyotes turned into a big surprise in 2009-10, maybe having drama will serve the Devils well once the puck drops for real. Division-by-division, here’s how it lines up: Northeast – Only now will we find out if Boston has healed from blowing that 3-0 playoff lead to Philadelphia. If the hangover doesn’t persist, the Bruins should win the division. If it does, Buffalo, fully restored to its old-school jerseys (much to the relief of Sabres fans), can finish first behind Ryan Miller’s expert goaltending. Montreal’s stunning run to the final four isn’t likely to repeat itself with Jaroslav Havak out of the picture. Toronto is rebuilding the right way, but contention is a year or two away. Ottawa has redefined itself, too, but can the Senators defend? Atlantic – Really, it’s a Keystone State

narrative here. Philadelphia went from making the playoffs at the last moment to the epic Bruins comeback to getting within two wins of the Stanley Cup. The Flyers shouldn’t be as schizophrenic this season, but Pittsburgh, with the CrosbyMalkin combo, is still more potent and now has a new arena to replace the Igloo. In New Jersey, the whole story is Kovalchuk, and whether he’s worth that kind of money. The Rangers still throw bad money around, and won’t contend again until they stop. You’ll hear a lot of rumors about the sad-sack Islanders and a possible relocation. ANY place would be better than Nassau Mausoleum – er, Coliseum. Southeast – Washington rules the regular season, thanks to Alex Ovechkin and his whirlwind charges. But the playoffs are another matter, culminated by surrendering a 3-1 lead to Montreal a season ago. Part of the problem is that the Caps never get much competition in this division, though that may change with the vast improvements Tampa Bay (new ownership, new coach, new GM, lots of new talent) have made. Everyone

else, from Carolina to Atlanta to Florida, is far behind, with only the Hurricanes harboring realistic playoff hopes. Central – Chicago celebrated its first Cup victory in 49 years by letting half the players go. As the likes of Antti NIemi and Dustin Byfuglien scattered across the land, the Blackhawks could take heart in the fact that Jonathan Toews, Patrick Kane and Mirian Hossa are still around to fend off Detroit. Injuries killed the Red Wings a season ago, and a healthy group can make Chicago sweat. St. Louis stands a fair chance of improvement, while a modest budget keeps Nashville from addressing its constant offensive woes. At least the disciplined Predators can ponder a playoff return, something that seems far away in Columbus, where major rebuilding is underway again. Northwest – They are expecting nothing less than the Cup in Vancouver, where reigning Hart Trophy winner Henrik Sedin rules the front line and Roberto Luongo stops shots. More importantly, the Canucks don’t have to go through that two-month, Olympicsenforced road trip. Colorado just can’t surprise everyone again, so expect a step or do back from the Avalanche as Minnesota keeps searching for offense. Any game between Calgary and Edmonton is fun, and while both might miss the playoffs again, remember the name Taylor Hall. Up in Alberta, they’re talking about this new Oiler as if he’s like some guy that See Random, page 5

On Sept. 15, 2005, Kim Bermel’s husband died by suicide and her life ended as she knew it. When she finally found HOPE for Bereaved five months later, her life began again. “My husband committed suicide. It was pretty unexpected,� Bermel said. “Even though I should have known what to do and how to feel, I really did not have any idea of how I was supposed to live, so I had to try and figure out how I was going to get through.� Bermel went on the Internet and found HOPE for Bereaved, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to serving grieving children, adults and families through counseling, support groups and an array of services, free of charge. Over the past year, it has served more than 10,000 people on their journey from grief to hope. “It was an amazing thing to be in a room with other people who were suicide survivors, because it sets you apart from the rest of the world, it truly does,� she said. “And being in that room at HOPE was the most peaceful and safe place to be.� This year, HOPE will be celebrating 32 years in Central New York with its annual fundraiser, “Celebration of HOPE,� set for Friday Nov. 12 in the Nicholas J. Pirro

The Jamesville-DeWitt School District is proposing an estimated $11.5 million facilities maintenance project that residents can vote on next week. The project involves site work and roof replacement for the majority of the schools as well as the bus garage. The district also proposes that the high school stadium bleachers be replaced and safety fencing be added to two athletic fields: the upper Lyndon Field and the J-DMS lacrosse field. The roofing portion is projected to cost around $9 million while site work would be about $2.5 million. To fund the project, the district would use $500,000 from its Capital Reserve Fund while the remainder would be paid through building aid and bonding. The current tax rate would not increase, said Superintendent Alice Kendrick, because the district’s current debt is being retired; overall debt payments would remain level well into the future. “Our goal is to keep overall debt payments flat,� she said. The public ballot will display two propositions, one to authorize the district to spend up to $11.5 million on the project; the other is to allow the district to replenish the Capital Reserve Fund over time. If voter-approved, the district must then submit

detailed plans to the New York State Education Department for its approval before it can go out to bid. Kendrick said if actions prove to be in favor of the project, the district hopes to hear back from Albany in enough time to begin work next summer. Polls will be open between 7 a.m. and 9 p.m. Tuesday Oct. 19 in the J-D High School gymnasium.

Food Bank of CNY hosts 22nd annual conference By Caitlin Donnelly The Food Bank of Central New York held its 22nd Annual Member Program Conference and Community Awareness Day on Oct. 8 at the Double Tree Inn in East Syracuse. More that 300 people from the emergency food networks in eleven CNY counties attended the event, where the theme was “hunger from the frontlines: sharing your local experience.” The all-day conference featured multiple seminars, which ranged from nutrition and food safety to food stamps and customer service, as well as networking opportunities, lunch and keynote speaker, Thomas Slater.

Slater, executive director of Food Bank of CNY, described the conference as an opportunity for members of emergency food service programs—which include food pantries, shelters and soup kitchens—to share “best practices” within the industry from urban, suburban and rural perspectives. The turnout was the largest the conference has ever seen since it began in 1988, said Slater. Due to the recession, there is an increase in the number of working class families, as well as homeless, that are turning to the emergency food services for daily essentials. This, in turn, has led to the need for more efficient practices by the programs, explained Slater. Food Bank of CNY, located at 6970 Schuyler Road in

East Syracuse, acts as the major distribution center to nearly 476 food programs in Cayuga, Chenango, Cortland, Herkimer, Jefferson, Lewis, Madison, Oneida, Onondaga, Oswego, and St. Lawrence counties. Upstate names two pediatric surgeons to faculty Two pediatric surgeons with specialization in numerous areas, including oncology, neonatal, trauma and intestinal disorders have joined Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital. Tamer A. Ahmed and Kim Mendelson will also join the faculty at Upstate Medical University. Michael Ratner, Upstate’s pediatric surgery division chief, said Upstate’s ability to attract two physicians from this year’s graduating class of pediatric surgery residents, about 30 individuals nationwide, speaks volumes. “Everyone at Upstate, from our new surgery chair, to the outstanding pediatrics faculty and healthcare team, in addition to this outstanding facility, played a key role in landing these talented pediatric surgeons,” Ratner said. Ahmed and Mendelson said their decisions to join Upstate were in part influenced by the presence of the Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital. Both surgeons have worked at children’s hospitals previously. “The presence of a children’s hospital underscores a community’s commitment to providing extraordinary care for children and their families,” Mendelson said. “I’m delighted to have the opportunity to care for children and their families in such a first-rate facility.” Ahmed said he was impressed by the facility, but also the medical staff. “Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital is a remarkable facility in its design, but more impressive is the dedication of the medical team that cares for kids in this fine facility,” he said. “I look forward to caring for children from all across this region.” Ahmed, a native of Texas, is a pediatric surgeon special-

izing in neonatal surgery, general pediatric surgery, minimally invasive surgery, pediatric trauma and surgery for intestinal disorders. He most recently served as a fellow in pediatric surgery at Arkansas Children’s Hospital (ACH), part of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock. With 316 beds, ACH is the sixth largest children’s hospital in the country. Ahmed Prior to 2008, Ahmed was administrative chief resident in general surgery (2007-2008) at Milton S. Hershey Medical Center in Hershey, Pa., where he completed his surgical residency (2001-2008). Ahmed earned his medical degree at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. Additionally, Ahmed served as a research fellow at the Penn State Hershey Medical Center, investigating growth hormone resistance in sepsis, a severe illness in which the body is overwhelmed by infection. He also served as co-principal investigator on several studies assessing the effects of gastric bypass surgery on gastrointestinal physiology, taste sensitivity and food preference. Ahmed is a member of the American College of Surgeons, the Association for Academic Surgery and the Association for Surgical Education. Mendelson, who was raised in the Boston area, specializes in pediatric surgical oncology as well as prenatal surgery, neonatal surgery, minimally invasive pediatric surgery and surgery for

intestinal disorders. She most recently completed her pediatric surgical residency at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children in Philadelphia, a 189-bed hospital affiliated with Drexel University College of Medicine and Temple University School of Medicine. Mendelson also completed a pediatric surgery research fellowship (2007-2008) at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children. She completed her pediatric surgery fellowship (20052007) at the University of Louisville, a fetal surgery fellowship (2004-2005) at the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center and a general surgery residency (1998-2004) at University Health Systems of Eastern Carolina Pitt County Memorial Hospital/Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University. Mendelson earned her medical degree and Ph.D., at Tufts University School of Medicine. She holds board certification from the American Board of Surgery. Mendelson Mendelson’s research interests are varied. She has published and presented her research on inflammatory bowel disease, liver disease and minimally invasive pediatric surgery. Ahmed and Mendelson will be part of the surgical team at the Olivia Louise Pietrafesa Center for Children’s Surgery at Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital, which opened in 2003 and performs about 2,300 pediatric surgical cases annually.

music composition. One student asked what drove Hitchings to become a musician. “I had no choice,â€? he said with a laugh. “You just go by your heart.â€? He then added that much of his inspiration came from his Manlius music teacher, the late David Bahner. Once Hitchings entered the music industry, he had run-ins with numerous highprofile artists and collaborated with some of the greatest musicians of their time. As he peppered the names of artists such as The Who, Carlos Santana and Hendrix into his story, excited whispers washed through the student audience. Hitchings was also nonchalant about the Grammy he won for collaborating on the “Flashdanceâ€? soundtrack, and his hit songs “Do Ya Think I’m Sexyâ€? and “Young Turksâ€? with Rod Stewart. As the lecture wrapped up and time was left for one last question, a student asked, “Can you play something for us?â€? “Oh, I don’t know‌ I don’t know any songs,â€? he said with a laugh, before sitting down at the old piano. After a brief pause, he played “The Lord’s Prayerâ€? to end the lecture. In addition to the student audience, David Bahner’s wife, Sue; a former classmate from the Manlius School, Ken Gillis; and Hitchings’ sister also attended the lecture. “[The attack] happened at 11:18 a.m. and lunch was being served. So, it wasn’t just one particular group of sailors, it was a mixture of the entire crew, including an officer, chief and junior sailors. It serves as a reminder every day for my sailors to feel why we’re here and why we do what we do.� The flag that was flying when the ship was attacked is now encased and mounted on a wall. “Every night, when the sun goes down, we do colors and then we lower the flag,� Ehlers said. “The ship made the decision the day after the attack that they were not going to take that flag down.� The flag was lighted every night until it was towed out of port. “It’s another reminder for my crew of why we train, why we do what we do and the importance of the job we do,� he said. Ehlers’ first month in command of

the USS Cole was in the Middle East in the Gulf of Aden, just off the coast of Yemen. The crew was performing counter piracy operations as part of a NATO group, working with six different countries. This week on Oct. 12, the U.S. Navy is holding a special ceremony in Norfolk, Va. to commemorate the 10-year anniversary of the terrorist attack. Host and featured speaker is Admiral John Harvey, commander of the U.S. Fleet Forces Command. Most of the families of those who were killed are attending, as well as the crew members who tended to the bombing’s aftermath. Retired USS Cole Commanding Officer Kirk Lippold, who was on the ship the day of the attack, will also be present. Lippold works hard to make sure the lessons learned through the bombing of the USS Cole are not forgotten, Ehlers said.

Kudos for Klezmercuse Dinkin’s dance band plays joyous ‘Jewish jazz’ Sunday at F’ville Free Library By Russ Tarby Klezmer fiddlers Lean and Baruch Schwartz were brothers. As siblings often do, the Schwartzes would assess each other’s talents – comparing, contrasting and competing. Leon, who had studied classical violin after growing up as a folk fiddler in the Bukovina, considered his style as “mer kinstlich� (more artsy) as compared to his brother’s style which he called “mer tsigaynish� (more Gypsy). The same could be said about Jonathan Dinkin’s two recordings. The Syracuse composer’s first CD, Naches (1999), is clearly mer kinstlich as compared to his new disc, Lily’s Hora, an unabashedly mer tsigaynish production. While Naches respectfully explored a wide range of Jewish musical styles, Lily’s Hora simply revels in the pleasures of klezmer. Jonathan Dinkin & Klezmercuse will perform at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 17, at the Fay-

Family traditions Just as music was a family tradition for the Schwartz brothers, so it is with the Dinkins. While he plays keyboards on the new CD Jonathan’s wife, Aveeya, adds vibrant vocals to five of the disc’s tracks. The jacket’s cover art is a cartoon by Jonathan’s late father, Isador, and the album itself is named for his mother, Lily. While the composer honors his family with Lily’s Hora, Dinkin also honors his band, Klezmercuse, by showcasing the musicians’ individual talents. As compared to Naches, this disc’s folkier feel is largely due to the band’s welcome addition of fiddler Judy Cohen Stanton. Not only does Judy play a festive fiddle, she also contributes an original tune with the tonguein-cheek title, “Mishpucha Meshugas� (“My Crazy Family�), and she helped to produce the disc’s 24 tracks. Hornets beat Corcoran, win AA-2 league title By Phil Blackwell

Balance on offense, toughness on defense, an uncanny ability to exploit an opponent’s mistakes - that was what drove the Fayetteville-Manlius football team to the Class AA-2 division regular season championship. And it may take them to higher places yet. First, there was the league title to attain - and with first place on the line last Friday night at Corcoran, the Hornets grabbed it, saving its best work for the fourth quarter of a 21-13 victory over the Cougars. “It was a great night for us,” head coach Paul Muench said. “This is a big victory, and it gives us momentum for the rest of the season.” The state Class AA no. 22-ranked Hornets are now 6-0, its best start since 1998, when it won a Section III title in the Class A ranks. Two-way star Matt Moro, who scored a pair of touchdowns and had the game-clinching interception in the final minute, said the Hornets’ intense work in the off-season has translated into on-field success this fall. What F-M needed to show, in the early stages of this highlyanticipated clash of two 5-0 teams atop the AA-2 division, was some resilience. Corcoran took the opening kickoff and went 79 yards, mostly through Chao Porch’s runs. On fourth down from the Hornets’ 36, quarterback Shakem Buckmon broke through the line, then took off down the right side until he found the end zone. Trailing 7-0 after the extra point, the Hornets had to make a fourth-down stop at its own 28 in the last minute of the first quarter just to keep the Cougars from moving further ahead. It would not be so lopsided again.

A key third-down pass from John Wittig to Ari Waffle launched a 72-yard march. Early in the second period, Moro went the final six yards for the TD, and Waffle’s PAT tied it, 7-7. Wittig went back to the air on the Hornets’ next possession. Most of the 73 yards were covered by two pass plays to Louis Muraco - a 34-yard catch-and-run, then a 24-yard rollout pass where Muraco found the end zone, putting F-M in front for good. It was still 14-7 when, in the third quarter, Corcoran drove 75 yards, most of it on the ground, before Delvon Adams went the final eight yards for the TD. Instead of tying it, the Cougars went for two points - and Porch got stuffed behind the line of scrimmage, the first of many big plays F-M’s defense would pull off. F-M punted early in the final period, clinging to that 14-13 edge - but Corcoran’s Hezekiah Thomas muffed the kick at his own 27, and the Hornets’ Billy Patrick pounced on it. A short drive followed, and Moro went the final four yards to score with 9:26 to play. Now the defense really took over. Moro said his team adjusted well, taking away Corcoran’s outside running game in the late stages and forcing the Cougars between the tackles, where the Hornets’ strength lay. Right after Moro’s second TD, Brent Strickland made two memorable plays, first dropping Buckmon for a loss, then slamming him to the turf on a third-down blitz, sending Buckmon to the sidelines, not to return. “We think he (Brent) is one of the best players in the area,” Muench said. “And once he makes big plays, it gest the rest of the team fired up. It’s fun to watch.” F-M’s defense wasn’t done, either, as it would force two more

One more week of regular-season play remains for the Hornets, who host Liverpool Friday at 7 p.m. on Senior Night. There’s a good chance F-M could meet the Warriors again in the first round of the Class AA playoffs, which would mean back-to-back games against the same foe. Liverpool, after an 0-3 start, has won three straight to clinch a playoff berth and are coming off a 35-21 win over Nottingham.

Manlius Pebble Hill soccer rises to top of state rankings Still unbeaten, the Manlius-Pebble Hill boys soccer team earned a new honor when, early last week, the new state rankings came out – and the Trojans were in the top spot. Now the task for MPH was to defend that position against challengers inside and outside the OHSL Patriot division. Amid the cold rain last Tuesday afternoon on its home turf, the Trojans completed a regular-season sweep of long-time rival Faith Heritage, beating the Saints 5-0. As MPH gradually pulled away after earning a 2-0 halftime lead, Mike Kardjian continually tormented the Faith Heritage

defense, not stopping until he had registered two goals and two assists. The Trojans moved on Thursday to beat Cato-Meridian 8-2, a game where it notched four goals in each half and set a blistering pace. Back on Oct. 2, the Trojans visited Cazenovia, a recent rival when MPH was up in the Liberty division, and fought hard for a 2-0 shutout of the Lakers. MPH’s back line was strong throughout the afternoon, denying Cazenovia whenever it attacked, as Jordan Gentile finished with six saves. Even with signs of improvement to be found everywhere, the Fayetteville-Manlius field hockey team is still stuck behind the top Class A sides. That was seen again in last Tuesday night’s match against defending champion Rome Free Academy, as the Hornets got on the board, but still lost to the Black Knights 3-1. Back at home on Thursday afternoon, F-M got even closer to success against Liverpool, but still lost to the Warriors 2-1.

F-M finally ended the skid on Saturday, beating CiceroNorth Syracuse 2-1 (the makeup of a Sept. 16 postponement) behind goals from Lindsay Trachtenberg and Kendra Napierala. Kaitlyn Osborn earned an assist as Cunningham and Rutkowski combined for eight saves. To start its week, East Syracuse-Minoa tried to complete a regular-season sweep of Cato-Meridian, but could not quite pull it off as it tied the host Blue Devils 1-1. Back home Wednesday night to face Port Byron, the Spartans took a 4-1 defeat to the Panthers, unable to recover from falling behind 2-0 in the first half.

F-M denied sectional golf title on tie-breaker Put simply, the Fayetteville-Manlius boys golf team got as close to a Section III Class AA title as one could get without actually winning it. On the unfamiliar ground of Liverpool Country Club, Fero and Ramie each shot 36, three shots better than the Warriors’ Connor Weakley, while Ralph posted a 39 in support. Making it three wins in as many days, F-M topped Oswego 193-205 to send its mark to 12-2. Nick Polera stepped up, shooting a 36 at Woodcrest as Ramie (37) loomed close behind. ESM boys soccer beats Chittenango By Phil Blackwell pblackwell@cnylink.com To start its run through October, the East Syracuse-Minoa boys soccer team survived a tough battle with Chittenango last Tuesday night, edging the Bears 1-0. Jeremy Barbuto gave the Spartans all the offense it needed when he notched an unassisted goal in the first half. From there, ESM’s defense had to take over, preventing Chittenango from getting any kind of attack started. Casey Sullivan only had to make five saves. In Thursday’s game at Fulton, the Spartans lost 2-0 to the Red Raiders. Sullivan had eight saves this time, but the Red Raiders pulled out in front behind the work of Eric Naioti, who scored one goal and assisted on the other, by Zach Howell. ESM’s girls soccer team began the week at the .500 mark

(5-5), but fell below it after last Tuesday night’s 2-0 defeat to Chittenango. The Spartans did not lack for scoring opportunities, despite the rain and cold temperatures. Every time it charged, though, the Bears kept turning them back, goalie Brigid St. Leger stopping all 12 shots she faced. St. Leger’s counterpart, Casie Auricchio, had eight saves, and blanked Chittenango until the second half, when Bears forward Jenna Barber twice beat her for goals, both times getting assists from Kaitlin Antelmi. The Spartans’ game with Fulton, scheduled for Friday, got pushed back to Monday afternoon. Both ESM teams meet CBA this week, with the boys Spartans also going to Fowler and the girls hosting Solvay.

A case in point was last Tuesday’s match against Tully, where the Cobras never could get moving in the rain and lost to the Black Knights 5-0.

When the Bishop Grimes boys team took the field Thursday to face Fabius-Pompey, it did prevail, pulling off a 2-1 overtime victory over the Falcons. The Grimes boys play three times this week, including a non-league game against state Class B no. 1-ranked Skaneateles, while the girls Cobras take on state-ranked Bishop Ludden and Cato-Meridian. Cooler days are on the horizon. As the mercury drops, energy consumption to heat the home tends to rise. Also avoid metal window frames, as such frames tend to conduct the cold and can further exacerbate sweating issues.

Halloween Hints for tHe Home How to make your kids’ Jack-o-Lantern last longer Jack-o-lanterns are a staple of Halloween decorations. Making one last throughout the season is a trick of the trade even some veteran carvers struggle with. People young and old head to pumpkin patches to pick out the ideal pumpkins. Some prefer perfectly round ones, while others like tall, oblong ones. Whatever the decision, the majority of these pumpkins will be brought home and turned into jack-o-lanterns, or pumpkins carved with a design. The key to having a jack-o-lantern ready and prime for Halloween haunting is carving it at the right time. Carved pumpkins will not last forever, so timing it right is key. In general, carved pumpkins will last for about a week if kept in a cool place and out of direct sunlight. A pumpkin left in midday sun and heat will likely rot or mold much more quickly. For those planning on carving pumpkins for Halloween, it’s best to do so a day or two before the big day. This way the design will be crisp and fresh. There also are ways to increase the jack-o-lantern’s longevity. Some of the best methods involve inhibiting mold growth and dehydration of the pumpkin. One trick

is to submerge the cut pumpkin in a bucket of water for a few minutes after carving to moisten the flesh. Others say that spreading petroleum jelly on the inside of the car ved pumpkin will help. Comm e rc i a l c h e m i cal products that reduce the decay of the pumpkin may be effective as well. One can also try using a bleachand-water solution to keep mold from growing. Those who will simply allow nature to take its course should keep the pumpkin as cool as possible and remove as much of the flesh from the inside when carving. However, because no method is foolproof, the jack-o-lantern will most likely not make it more than a week, unless the goal is to discover new strains of mold growth. For those who want a permanently ghoulish jacko-lantern, it’s best to purchase a plastic or ceramic variety instead.

Whether hosting a haunted house party at your home or if you’re just hoping to dress up your home in the spirit of the season, the following directions can help give your home a more spooky feel this Halloween. Swinging Foam Bat Materials needed: Black craft foam sheet Blue ink pen Scissors Mini sunglasses with pin attachment, optional Wiggle eyes Tacky glue Hole punch Narrow ribbon Suction cup with either a hole or a hook attachment Directions: 1. Draw your bat on the craft foam sheet and cut out. 2. Either pin on the mini sunglasses or glue on the wiggle eyes. Let dry. 3. Punch a hole in the bat’s head near the top. 4. Run a small length of ribbon and through the hole. 5. If your suction cup has a hole in it, run the ribbon through the suction cup, then knot. If your suction cup has a hook attached, then just knot the ribbon and hang the bat.

Helen Louise Mills Jenks, 94, passed away peacefully on Tuesday Oct. 5, 2010, at Loretto where she resided the past two years. She resided most of her adult life in Manlius. Helen grew up in Oneida, where her love for music was nurtured by her parents, Daniel and Florence Mills. She became a gifted pianist and organist graduating with honors from The University Of Rochester Eastman School of Music in 1939. Helen married Donald G. Jenks in 1943. Both accomplished musicians, they shared a passion for music, teaching and the arts. Donald died in 1962. Helen’s long and distinguished career included many achievements and awards. For

Richard Price Deitzler, 90, died Sept. 26, 2010, in Northfield, VT. He was born June 19, 1920, in Lebanon, PA, son of Walter and Mary Price Deitzler. Dick received a bachelor’s degree from Ursinus College and a master’s degree from Clark University and then served in the U.S. Navy. In 1948 he received an electrical engineering degree from RPI and joined General Electric in Syracuse, retiring in 1982. Dick and Marion Elise Dunham of Newport, RI, were married June 17, 1946. They lived in North Syracuse and Fayetteville. Elise currently lives in Northfield, VT. Dick was a member of the GE Retirees’ Association, the Lions’ Club and the United Methodist Church. Surviving are his sister, Betty Jean Heuston; his children, Barbara Catroppa (Samuel) and Marjorie Zunder (Phillip); grandchildren, Eli Zunder (Barbara), Rachel Zunder and Andrea, Daniel and Christopher Catroppa; and great-grandson Noah Zunder. Dick’s brother, James Deitzler is deceased. Memorial service: 10 a.m. Wednesday Oct. 6 at the United Methodist Church of Fayetteville. F-M girls runners conquer Manhattan By Phil Blackwell pblackwell@cnylink.com For the first time this autumn, the Fayetteville-Manlius girls cross country team ventured out of Central New York to face elite competition, and the results were quite familiar. The Hornets won the Eastern States portion of Saturday’s Manhattan Invitational at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, finishing with 32 points. Tatnall, from Delaware, was far back in second place with 80 points as Great Oak (Calif.) took third with 90 points. Jillian Fanning finished in 14 minutes, 16.08 seconds, putting her in second place in the individual standings behind only Cornwall’s Aisling Cuffe (13:58.14). In all, F-M occupied five of the top 11 spots. Katie Sischo

finished fourth in 14:26.38, while Christie Rutledge got seventh place (14:52.14) and Katie Brislin finished eighth in 14:56.51. Heather Martin was 11th in 15:08.43 as Courtney Chapman, still recuperating from a September flu bug, finished 16th. Emily McGurrin took 39th place. On the boys side at the Eastern States, F-M did quite well, taking third place with 168 points as Shaker took the top spot with 102 points and Lyncourt, N.J. CBA finished second with 144 points. Both Mark McGurrin and Andrew Roache reached the top 10, as McGurrin finished seventh in a clocking of 12:57.13 and Roache got ninth place in 12:58.08. Nick Ryan was 34th in 13:24.79 as Ben Thomas finished 55th (13:41.29), just ahead of Andrew Veilleux (13:47.28), Owen Strong (13:49.26) and Jules Wellner (13:58.50). Three days earlier, the Hornets went head-to-head

against Baldwinsville and had yet another 15-50 sweep on the girls side, but struggled a bit in the boys end before beating the Bees 23-38. The only suspense came when B’ville runner Shaun Thompson beat the F-M pack to win the boys race in a time of 15:53, leaving Andrew Roache second in 16:02. Of course, Roache had McGurrin (16:03) right behind him, even though the Bees’ Alec Peinkofer landed in fourth place in 16:04. It took Veilleux, in fifth place (16:19), to start the getaway as Conner Farrell, Strong (both in 16:31), Thomas (16:32) and Wellner (16:33) hit the line together. F-M’s girls ran, again, as a pack. Sischo won in 18:58, a second ahead of Fanning, Martin and Rutledge, while Brislin, Chapman and Emily McGurrin finished in 19 minutes flat. ESM cross country has week-long sweep By Phil Blackwell pblackwell@cnylink.com East Syracuse-Minoa’s cross country teams met Homer and Mexico in a three-way league meet and nearly pulled off a total sweep on the male and female sides. The boys Spartans did beat the Trojans and Tigers by equal scores of 23-37, with Mike Coogan again at the front of the pack as he won in a time of 17:04, half a minute ahead of Mexico’s James Gowans. The girls meet saw ESM beat Homer 30-33, but fall to Mexico 25-33. Individually, Gabrielle Pallotta fared quite well for the Spartans, finishing second in 21:17 as Homer’s Bori Toszer (20:10) cruised to the top spot.
