Marcellus fifth graders visit Orenda Springs

The roots remain

This photo of Tim Golick’s Champion Black Maple Tree on Reed Street during the site’s excavation shows that no roots were disturbed in the process. “The contractor was able to excavate down to the full 18 inches necessary, the limestone curbing that has been in place for decades having apparently forced the roots to stay out of the road itself,” said Mayor John Curtin.

The new signs at the village entry points are part of Mayor Mike Montero’s beautification efforts for the village. Those efforts continue with the upcoming fall harvest festival, whose proceeds will go toward the improvement of Munro Park.

Camillus Mayor Mike Montero grew up in Staten Island, so his youth was not rife with the pumpkin carving contests and hot apple cider of harvest festivals. Since moving to Central New York, they’ve really caught his eye. Montero and his wife, Jennifer, will host the village’s first annual Fall Harvest Festival from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. this Halloween, Oct. 31, at Munro Park. “It actually all started See Harvest, page 9

The 2010-11 Driver Middle School theme of “challenging yourself with healthy risks” was demonstrated to perfection as DMS fifth grade students visited the Orenda Springs Experiential Learning Center. Fifth grade students had the opportunity to experience the “challenge” of Orenda Springs as they participated in the team building/life skills training field trip activities during the months of September and October. John Powers, Executive Director of Orenda Springs, has created a “classroom in the woods” that enables students to immerse themselves in “expeditionary learning.” Among the life skills focused on during this year’s fifth grade experience were perseverance, initiative, patience, flexibility, caring, common sense, cooperation, honesty, sense of humor, organization, curiosity, trust, See Challenge, page 6

Westhill football crushes Skaneateles By Phil Blackwell pblackwell@cnylink.com

Forget the elements on the hand, or the road setting, or the improved nature of the opposition. The Westhill football team was not about to surrender the Class B West division title, even if it had to share this time around. Skaneateles is also bound for the postseason - but it received the full brunt of the Warriors last Friday night, especially in the second half as a tight, tense affair transformed into a 51-14 rout that secured for Westhill a tie for the league title and, again, a top seed for the Class B playoffs. It did not take too long for Westhill to establish itself against a wounded Skaneateles defense, despite the howling wind and cold rain that blew through the Lakers’ home field and the emotions everyone felt on Senior Night.

Twice in the first quarter, the Warriors came up with scoring drives, the offensive line punishing the Lakers as R.J. Chester, fast becoming Westhill’s feature back, climaxed both marches with touchdown runs - one of three yards, the other of 33 yards. He also made both extra points and would go seven-for-seven on the night with PATs. When Matt Trendowski scored on a four-yard run early in the second quarter, Westhill had a 21-0 lead and threatened to end it quickly. To its credit, though, Skaneateles would climb back into the contest before halftime. Though it was tough to throw in the gusty conditions, Conor Herr still pieced together a pair of scoring marches, ending them with short touchdown passes - five yards to Jacob Cooney, then (after a WesSee Warriors, page 6

‘Goose kill’ stalled By Ned Campbell editor@eagle-observer.com As of 10 a.m. on Oct. 13, the town of Camillus has yet to kill any geese at Veterans Memorial Park. Parks and Recreation Director Eric Bacon acquired a permit from the U.S. Bureau of Fish and Wildlife Sept. 20 to kill up to two geese a day and 20 geese total, in an effort to control the population at Gillie Lake. At the time he said shooting would begin the following week. Bacon went to Gillie Lake with a parks department employee certified in shotgun use but found no geese. “It was almost like the geese read the newspaper, Bacon said. While the parks department has yet to find any, there have b een geese spotted at the park. “We’ll continue to follow the situation, Bacon said. Residents have inquired about will be done with the dead geese -- some suggesting the goose meat be salvaged and used for food. Bacon said the town’s options are limited by the terms of the permit, which require that the geese be either buried or incinerated. He said the town will probably bury the geese.

Kirk proposes seven-foot LED sign in Camillus By Ned Campbell editor@eagle-observer.com Dick Kirk, the developer who renovated the near-condemned 55 Main in Camillus – soon to be “Krabby Kirk’s Saloonâ€? – applied for a permit on Oct. 14 to install an LED sign on the east side of 75 Main St. “The building sign proposed is 29 inches high, 7 foot 3 inches long,â€? said village codes enforcement officer John Williams during the Board of Trustees meeting held that night. Gasps from the few residents in attendance indicated their concern. “Don’t you have a sign ordinance?â€? one attendee asked. “We do have a sign ordinance, but the problem with the sign ordinance? ‌ That can meet the existing sign ordinance,â€? Williams said. “You address it with the new overlay, you don’t right now,â€? he added. The overlay district was drafted by attorney Steven Primo and presented at a public hearing in August – but it’s not yet finalized. “No matter how objectionable it is, there’s not a thing we can do about it,â€? Primo said. “However, knowing Mr. Kirk, and the fact that he’s a reasonable guy, we might be able to negotiate some sort of accommodation – maybe even downsize it a little bit.â€? If Kirk resisted a compromise, Primo continued, “I could not advise this board to now come up with something overnight ‌ in order to circumvent his right to a permit.â€? According to Williams, Kirk said that the sign would feature a banner advertising his business as well as scrolling public service announcements.

Both Williams and Montero were uncertain on the details. “What the board needs to do, Williams said, “is look at the proposal, have Dick come in next month and discuss what he really wants to do with the [sign]. “He’s been a reasonable guy; he’s worked well with the board, Primo said. “We can talk to him. Community development Montero took the opportunity to comment on village improvements to come. “Dick’s almost done with [55 Main]; he’s purchased three other buildings. All three of them are getting a facelift with community development [grants], he said. He added that the Animal Clinic, located at the corner of South Street, would also be improved with county grant assistance, along with the Golden Pet on Main Street. $2.3 million build-up Williams reported that the village has interested parties to rehabilitate the old Camillus Cutlery building. The original $2.3 million Restore New York Grant awarded to the village, and abandoned by developer Tom Blair, is still available, as long as the buyer stays within the project’s original scope – residential on top, professional space below. Williams also noted that the gas station on the corner of Main Street and Newport Road could reopen by the end of the year.

Introducing Camillus Village Trustee Bridget Yule By Ned Campbell editor@eagle-observer.com Bridget Yule has been the director of Student Center and Programming Services at Syracuse University for 21 years. She was sworn in as Village Trustee last month. Yule is the mother of Daniel Talbot, a civil engineer for Arcadis of New York, and Emily, a graduate student of speech pathology at Ithaca College. Eagle Observer: What led you to apply for the trustee position? Bridget Yule: Mike Montero our mayor is also my neighbor. I moved into the neighborhood last January and was welcomed into the neighborhood by Mike and his wife, Jennifer ‌ When Mike had an unexpected vacancy he approached me to see if I would be interested in the position. EO: Why did you decide to become a trustee? BY: I was new to the neighborhood and got to know our mayor. He approached me after both he and I had several conversations concerning the town and some of the issues the community was facing this fiscal year. He then asked if I would be interested in filling a vacancy on the board until December 2011. I love volunteer work and thought this would be a great time in my life to take advantage of a political position for a small village. EO: Is this your first job in local government? BY: Yes, it is my first position in local government. EO: What do you bring to the table? BY: I bring 31 years of business and higher education experience. I am a native Syracusan born and raised here. Syracuse is my home so I am familiar with Camillus and the area. I lived in a small town, the town of Cazenovia, for 21 years where I was an active member of the community through my volunteer work at St. James Church, Girls Scouts, Pop Warner Football, PTA and various other committees throughout the school system with my children. I am a member of the Junior League of Syracuse, which is an organization of women committed to promoting volunteerism, developing the potential of

I understand how important community life is to a village like Camillus. EO: What are your goals coming in? BY: Learn the position, support business development, support community issues and concerns to better the village of Camillus EO: What is the board of trustees currently doing well? BY: Since I have just come onto the board and have two board meetings under my belt, I think the board is working very hard on community development to bring in new business, address new revenue streams, and most importantly provide a balanced budget for the upcoming fiscal year in light of the loss of sales tax revenue from Onondaga County. EO: What could be done better? BY: I only have two board meetings under my belt so at this time I will not comment just yet. EO: Are there aspects of the village of Camillus that, as a trustee, you hope to improve? BY: I hope to participate in the developing of new businesses that will generate new revenue, improve the look of the village main street through signage, design and diversity. I will work with the mayor not just at the board meetings but outside of these meetings to meet with current and prospective business owners to create a continuous improvement plan for the village. Musings on an October day I saw October edging its way in, rolling as mist through the small vales on Slate Hill. It was early evening, the sun yawning its way home west. I had spent the day with my daughter and grandson, doing what grandmothers do, playing, strolling, giving my youngest child a time to rest and recoup. Soaking up the energy, the delight of young Tommy’s minute by minute discovery of his world. Like the waning of the year, this grandmother now knows why children are born to young people. I was tired. The vision of sitting on the sofa in our living room, dozing while propped up with pillows was the image fueling the last miles of my drive home. I was more than tired, exhausted might be a better

word for it. Still, the day was wonderful and the fatigue was the good kind, the kind that you get from work, whether physical or mental, well

done. Memories, only mine now, kept appearing, moments with my children when they were little: afternoons at the Tiny Tots Concerts … when I could easily sit on the floor and get up without the help of a backhoe; wide eyed, sometimes reticent, visits to Santa Claus; sunlit days in St. Pete so that my mother could have grandmother time with her eldest’s offspring … sandy picnics on the beach, strolls through the malls and, of course…emergency visits to the local St. Pete pediatrician. I could conjure up their hugs,

their joy of discovery, their innocent love of helping their mom with the most mundane things…There is the memory of the time that I attempted to can peaches with a toddler under foot. I had gone to the Regional Market early on that Saturday morning, seriously evaluated whether the peaches for sale were cling or free stone ( the extent of my peach knowledge) and brought home a bushel with visions of yards of glistening jars of canned peaches. With my Blue Book open, I followed the instructions to the letter. My peaches apparently couldn’t read since, despite my coaxing in hot water, followed by ice baths, they refused to give up their skins. Hovering around my legs, desperate to help, my two year old added to the … how shall I put this…frustration? It seemed See Ferro, next page

problem solving, effort , friendship and leadership. The full day experience took classes through a variety of team building activities where success depended upon cooperative problem solving. After each activity, students had the opportunity to identify the necessary life skills for success. Students also had the chance to “de-brief ” on their own personal attributes and areas that need to be improved. The Orenda Springs Experiential Learning Center team building experience is predicated on the belief that: Tell me, and I will forget Show me, and I may remember Involve me, and I will understand

Facilities at Orenda Springs include a large outdoor classroom, indoor horse riding arena, a trout pond, tipi, and a low and high ropes challenge facility that has been described as “the most unique course I have ever seen!” The highlight of the Orenda Springs field trip experience was the high ropes challenge course where students and staff challenged themselves with activities such as the “flying squirrel,” the “Peregrin” and the “zip-line.” Fifth grade students at Driver Middle School experienced a day of self-reflection and hands-on learning where trust and cooperation lead to a clearer understanding of self and others. And a big play happened - only it was Westhill’s defense doing the honors as it recorded a safety early in the third quarter, just the start of an avalanche of 30 unanswered points. Trendowski hit on his second and third TD’s before the third period was done as he scored on runs of one and

Nick Vitagliano broke loose for a 57-yard touchdown in the final minutes. Skaneateles now knows that it will face Class B East division champion Cazenovia next Saturday in the first round of the sectional playoffs. Meanwhile, Westhill had to wait until the weekend to find out that it would host Oneida Friday night in the opening round as it looks for back-to-back sectional titles.

Mary Jo Pelc opens studio in Marcellus By Ned Campbell Mary Jo Pelc has been teaching dance in the area since 1990 when, upon graduating from Potsdam with a dance degree and business minor, she opened Fancy Footwork Dance Studio in Auburn. On any given week, she teaches about 30 hours, offering her expertise to around 200 students. “I basically teach ages 2 to 95, all ages and all different levels,” said Pelc, who focuses on creative movement, ballet, tap, jazz pointe, swing and aerobics. Pelc recently moved her satellite studio from Skaneateles to Marcellus, where she teaches Thursday evenings above Ja Spa & Fitness at 16 W. Main St. Her first day of classes was Oct. 7. “I loved every second of it,” she said. “I loved the space … I felt at home.”

It’s ‘Five Below’ in Fairmount! Five Below opened in Fairmount Fair last month, as part of a statewide expansion by the retailer of extreme-value merchandise to teens and pre-teens. “2009 and 2010 have been difficult years for American consumers,” said David Schlessinger, Five Below co-founder and Executive Chairman. “At Five Below, shoppers will find cosmetics, toys and games, seasonal decorations and accessories, video games and DVDs, iPad and cell phone accessories, and much more, all within the $1 to $5 price range.” The company expects to have 25 stores open for business throughout upstate New York by the end of 2011.

Dance devotee When Pelc says she teaches students up to age 95, she’s not exaggerating. Helen Mohn has been in her aerobics class in Marcellus since Coccia hired Pelc nearly 20 years ago. She turns 96 in December.

Marcellus beats J-E, takes cross country league title In the course of a month, the Marcellus boys cross country team squared off against each of the other seven OHSL Liberty division squads – and beat them all. The Mustangs, no. 2 in the latest state Class B rank-

ings, completed this seasonlong sweep last Wednesday against Jordan-Elbridge, holding off the Eagles 24-33 in a first-place showdown. Marcellus also topped Christian Brothers Academy 22-39 in the three-way meet, while J-E beat the Brothers by that same 22-39 margin to secure second place in the

league standings. The girls meet proved more lopsided in favor of Marcellus as it rolled past J-E 17-44 and CBA 21-38, with the Eagles squeaking past the Brothers by a one-point margin, 28-29. Westhill’s girls cross country team nearly denied Cazenovia a league title on

Thursday, but lost a narrow 28-31 decision and also fell to Skaneateles by that same margin. Despite this, Betsy Black and Jessica Curry still went 1-2 among individuals, both finishing in a time of 19:46 as Lissa DiPaola finished seventh in 20:30. The Warriors did sweep Skaneateles (18-37) and

Cazenovia (21-38) in the boys race, where Will Downs finished second in 17:47. Jon Moore (17:57) and Casey Bunce (18:01) were third and fourth, respectively, with Peter Lynch sixth in 18:26 and Mitchell Lamb (18:45) in ninth place. Back on Wednesday, Solvay split a head-to-head

meet with Hannibal, winning 19-40 on the girls side, but losing to the Warriors by that exact same margin in the boys race. In an eerily similar boys race, Solvay’s Cody McCarthy almost won, his time of 16:14 just one second behind Hannibal’s Sherzod Shamiev. But the Warriors took the next four spots before Nate Carr (17:05) fit into seventh place for the Bearcats. Matt Battaglia was eighth in 17:25. J-E would win both of the small-school divisions at Saturday’s Weedsport invitational. On the boys side, Bader, in a time of 16:45.1, led a 1-2-3 sweep at the top as Gugel finished second (16:53.6) and Slonosky (16:53.9) got third place. Tom Poppe was 10th in 17:56.7 as Scott Sullivan took 13th, Alex Sulsik 14th and Carlin Coomey got 21st place. In the girls race, J-E won with 40 points to Weedsport’s total of 47 points. Westhill finished in the back of the large-school pack on both sides, with Amanda Kaley 23rd among the girls and Kyle Fitch 32nd among the boys. Read the full story at eagle-observer.com.

West Genesee swimmers still unbeaten Mustangs take out Hannibal By Phil Blackwell pblackwell@cnylink.com

Running its mark to a perfect 5-0, the West Genesee girls team took on CiceroNorth Syracuse Friday night at the LeMoyne College pool and beat the Northstars by a score of 99-85. Kim Pedrotti had a part in three different titles. On her own, Pedrotti won the 200 individual medley in 2:22.92 and needed 1:11.77 to prevail in the 100 breaststroke, while she also helped Nicole Desko, Brianna Smith and Jordan Donegan take the

200 medley relay in 2:06.42. Emily Kanoza was first in the 200 freestyle (2:09.59), with Olivia Castro needing 1:07.95 to finish first in the 100 backstroke and Sarah Yagan taking the 500 freestyle (6:06.14). Castro helped Emily Kanoza, Hannah Kanoza and Kristen Mooney prevail in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:49.20. Two days before the Wildcats hit the pool, Westhill/Corcoran improved to 3-3 in the Onondaga High School League (3-5 overall) with a 79-57 victory over Fulton. Late goal sends Ludden girls past Grimes By Phil Blackwell pblackwell@cnylink.com Still undefeated, and still safely entrenched in the state Class C top 10, the Bishop Ludden girls soccer team had every intention of making Tuesday night’s regularseason home finale against Bishop Grimes an enjoyable one. What wasn’t expected, though, was the

amount of struggle the Gaelic Knights would go through, squandering a two-goal lead before recovering late to beat the Cobras by a 3-2 margin to improve its mark to 11-0-1. When the two teams had met back on Sept. 10 in East Syracuse, Ludden had recorded a 3-0 shutout. And it looked for, and See Ludden soccer, page 19

Marcellus girls drill three league opponents Not only did the Marcellus girls soccer team have the OHSL Liberty division regular-season title sewed up, it got to play each of its five remaining regular-season games at home. To start that long homestand, Marcellus

made up the rained-out Sept. 30 game against Hannibal, and got to double digits on the board in an 11-1 romp over the Warriors. The fun continued Wednesday, against Jordan-Elbridge, with another all-out assault on the scoreboard in the course of a 10-0 See Mustangs soccer, page 19

By Phil Blackwell pblackwell@cnylink.com Deftly handling matters on both sides of the ball, the Marcellus football has earned a share of the Class B West division regularseason championship. The Mustangs went to Hannibal last Saturday with the knowledge that Westhill had already beaten Skaneateles the night before, and that Homer was trying to claim its share of first place at Phoenix - which it did with a 33-19 victory. So Marcellus had to win to get a shot at a playoff home game - and it did, keeping Hannibal off the board until the fourth quarter and breezing to a 34-14 victory over the Warriors. And as the tie-breaker worked out, Marcellus finished second in B West, ahead of Homer but behind Westhill. Still, that means the Mustangs will host Holland Patent, the thirdplace team from C East, in Friday’s opening round, with the winner to get Cazenovia or Skaneateles in Notice of Formation Yankee Clipper Hair Salon & Barber Shop, LLC Notice of Formation of a domestic Limited Liability Company (LLC). Marcellus tennis makes inspired playoff run By Phil Blackwell Everyone with the Marcellus girls tennis team was curious to find out if its stunning regular-season turnaround could carry over into the Section III Class B team tournament. For a pair of rounds, it did, as the Mustangs set a school record for victories in a season with 11 and made it all the way to the semifinals. It all started when the no. 5 seed Mustangs held off no. 12 seed Skaneateles 4-3 in Tuesday’s chilly opening round. Just 24 hours later, Marcellus went North to face no. 4 seed Carthage in

Wednesday’s quarterfinal round. Again, it proved close – and again, Marcellus won, eliminating the Comets 3-2. Finally, the Mustangs’ improbable journey ended in Thursday’s semifinal against no. 1 seed New Hartford, who beat the Mustangs 4-0 as the Spartans were leading in every match when it was called off due to rain. Still, six players qualified to appear in the individual sectional championships that start this week in Utica. Westhill, the no. 11 seed, went north to Adams to face no. 6 seed South Jefferson - and lost its opening-round match to the Spartans in a 5-0 decision.

From page 13

shutout of the Eagles. Solvay visited on Friday night and, through some of the season’s most difficult conditions, the Mustangs won again, bashing the Bearcats 5-1. Marcellus saw its boys team salvage third place out of its own tournament on Columbus Day, pulling out a 2-1 victory over New Hartford. Marcellus took the field again Wednesday at Cazenovia, only to fall in a 1-0 decision to the Lakers at the Fenner Street complex. The Marcellus boys (6-6-1) would be favored Tuesday against Solvay and play state no. 1-ranked Skaneateles, too. The girls Mustangs (13-1) clashedwith rival Westhill Monday and face Cazenovia Thursday to end its regular season.

Quick results

Wildcats flatten Fowler; Ludden blanks Tully By Phil Blackwell Genesee and Bishop Ludden football teams find themselves going to the Section III playoffs. And both head there with lots of confidence and momentum following impressive showings on a wet, cold and windy Friday night. The Wildcats used its potent passing attack to pull away from the Fowler Falcons and prevail 51-19 at Nottingham High School’s turf, while the Gaelic Knights got one more chance to impress the home crowd in Geddes and did so with a 26-0 shutout over Tully.

Ludden soccer From page 13 expected, the same on a chilly October evening in Geddes where the team’s three seniors - Grace Rooney, Meghan McGrath and Mary Ritchie - were honored in halftime ceremonies. Just 23 seconds into the game, the Gaelic Knights had a 1-0 lead, courtesy of a deft pass from the left side by Ritchie that found Kelly Granteed, who put in the goal. Controlling the ball most of the way, Ludden doubled that margin to 2-0 midway through the first half when Mersadiz Hayes converted on a hard shot from the middle. All was going smoothly until the 24th minute, when Grimes’ Morgan Brennan sneaked in from the right side and fired a shot that confused McGrath

Thanks to CBA’s stunning 14-10 win at Baldwinsville on Friday, the Wildcats (3-4) will meet the Brothers (7-0) Friday at Alibrandi Stadium in the opening round of the AA playoffs. The winner plays Utica Proctor or Rome Free Academy in the semifinals. As for Bishop Ludden, it had to deal with the mud (plus the rain and the wind) on its home field against Tully. But it managed just fine, excelling on both sides of the ball against Tully, especially defense. Read the full story at eagle-observer. com. and went in. The goal took Ludden somewhat by surprise, and though it kept that 2-1 advantage at the break, the Gaelic Knights were far from safe. And it got more interesting when, in the 51st minute, the Cobras struck again, this time with Alex Guhin ripping a 30-yard shot just over McGrath’s head into the top of the net, tying it 2-2. That seemed to jolt the Gaelic Knights into action because, less than four minutes later, Rooney took the ball on the right side and crushed a shot past Grimes netminder Ashley Morgan home for the go-ahead goal. For the rest of the game, Ludden kept the ball in the Cobras’ end, unable to add to the lead thanks to Morgan (who had 12 saves), but keeping control. Grimes’ best chance to tie it

Volleyball

The West Genesee girls team lost in five games to Liverpool last Wednesday, before beating Fowler in three on Friday. Bishop Ludden lost in three games to the Falcons last Thursday and again to Corcoran on Friday.

Soccer

The Solvay girls team took a pair of close losses, falling 1-0 to Skaneateles last Tuesday and, two nights later, 2-1 to East SyracuseMinoa. The boys team lost 9-1 to the state no.1-ranked Skaneateles Lakers. In a much closer game on Friday, Solvay lost to Cortland, 1-0.

again came with nine minutes left, but McGrath caught Guhin’s hard shot and held on to it. Also at home on Tuesday, Bishop Ludden’s boys soccer team earned a 1-0 shutout over Faith Heritage. On Thursday, the Gaelic Knights had an easier time at Cato-Meridian, rolling past the Blue Devils 6-0. Two days later, Ludden edged Henninger 21 in a non-league game to clinch a winning record for 2010. Goals by Young and Kyle Lantry stood up as Hunter earned an assist. Each of Beaudoin’s seven saves proved important. In the last week of the regular season, the Ludden boys (9-5) will face Tully and Bishop Grimes, with the girls Gaelic Knights visiting Cato and Pulaski.
