Safety first when stringing holiday lights Perhaps no holiday tradition is more visible than decorative lights. Whether on the house or on the tree in the front picture window, holiday lights help create a festive mood for all. While aesthetically appealing, holiday lighting displays can also be quite dangerous. Older lights or poorly planned lighting projects can quickly turn tragic. However, this much beloved holiday tradition does not have to cease and desist. Instead, some simple safety precautions are all it takes to ensure this year’s lighting display is both stunning and safe. - Make sure exterior lights are designed for outdoor use. Not all lights can handle the elements, so those old Christmas tree lights might not be able to enjoy a second life as part of a home’s exterior lighting decor. - Plug lights directly into the electrical sockets rather than relying heavily on extension cords. Employ surge protector strips if there are not enough outlets available. Before plugging anything in, consult the fuse box to determine how much each circuit can safely handle. - Don’t use damaged lighting sets, including those with frayed strings, unstable connections, exposed wires, or broken or cracked sockets. - Make sure all external lights are securely attached. Wind can do significant damage to bulbs, which can lead to additional safety risks. As a precaution, attach all lights firmly to walls or anything else See lights on page 14
Holiday lighting displays are a beloved tradition but one homeowners must carefully consider and layout to avoid accidents.
Trains alive and well at Besser’s Whistlestop An American tradition is the toy train running around the Christmas tree or little bright-eyed children staring in amazement at a new train layout on a table that Santa Claus had somehow found time to build while the kids were snugly tucked away in their beds. There was nothing like coming down the stairs early Christmas morning to see an electric train and even maybe two running around or through a brightly lighted village whistle blowing and bell clanging. This scene never ceases to dazzle young and old alike. Everyone from toddlers to senior citizens are frequent visitors to the story which draws people from long distances to Besser’s Whistlestop miniature train store in Baldwinsville. There
are trains of all shapes, sizes and gauges to suit everyone’s taste from the steam trains of yesteryear to the most modern replicas of today’s real trains. The story also displays models from the tiny “N” gauge right up through the more popular HO, S, O 027 and G gauges in addition to a “Thomas the Tank Engine” display. The first time this years the story is carrying slot car sets. Besser’s is Central New York’s largest discount model and train store. It is operated by Kevin and Mark Besser at 2731 Brundage Road, near the corner of Sixty Road, just north of the village. There are about 3,000 square feet devoted to miniature trains and another 481 feed of operating layouts. Centerpiece of the store is an HO scale model of the

The model is 32 feet by 13 feet. Items not seen in the store can be special ordered. Besser’s has numerous catalogues for

that will not blow away when a stiff wind arrives. - Inside the home, be extra careful when using an artificial Christmas tree. Electric lights should never be used on a metallic tree. - Routinely check all cord temperatures. If a cord feels too hot, unplug it and find a replacement. - Don’t leave the lights on when no adults are home. If the home is empty or if just kids are home, make sure the lights are off. Avoid using timers that automatically turn the lights on, as it’s possible they will turn on when no one is home. Unplug all cords when going away for the holidays just to be safe. - Make sure all cords are visible. Don’t bury cords underneath rugs or floor mats to avoid personal injuries. - Hanging lights shouldn’t be a solo project. Whether hanging lights inside or outside, never do so alone. Fair World Marketplace features handmade gifts Ever wonder what the saying “Out of the ashes” refers to? One answer is in the Volcanic Ash Art sculptures from the Philippines found at Fair World Marketplace. These are beautifully handcrafted sculptures literally made from the ashes of the eruption of volcano Pinatubo in 1991. Also harvested from this eruption is the pumice rock now made into extremely effective foot scrubbers. To create something out of nothing, to give new life to old things or create beauty out of trash is an art. For many, it is also a livelihood. Outside Port au Prince in Haiti, the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, recently devastated by multiple natural disasters, artisans take discarded oil drums and create beautiful, now well known, “Drum art” wall sculptures using only simple hand tools and their feet. These creations not only bring new life to trash but new life to communities as well. Landfills and dumps filled with tires/inner-tubes and plastic trash across from their homes motivated groups in El Salvador and Nepal to transform these into purses and cell phone carriers. Other groups have transformed fragments of silk into recycled scarves/hats and bags. All of these and many other items can be found at Fair World Marketplace whose focus as an all Fair Trade store is both environmental and economic sustainability. Because of this, all its products are created to have the lowest environmental impact possible, while producing beautiful, creative and useful items ranging from household décor to personal accessories. Artisans are encouraged to use their creativity, ingenuity and local resources. This is evident in ornaments and salad bowls made from clamshells collected off the local coasts of the Philippines and Indonesia; boxes, trivets and bracelets made from recycled paper; bookmarks/business card holders and ornaments made of recycled soda cans; quilts made from recycled cloth and baskets carefully woven from locally grown grasses and pine needles. All products carried by Fair World Marketplace are carefully hand made by artisans who receive living wages for their work, technical help with products, micro loans to buy their raw materials, and work in safe environments.
