Decorating ideas on parade Since I have been to every one of the Parade of Homes for the last decade or so, I know what to expect on the outside – beautifully manicured lawns, a nice path leading up to the front door and siding done in soothing colors and crisp lines. Inside the homes, however, I never know what to expect. True, most of the models will have wide open spaces, a fireplace of some sort and family-friendly eating areas, living rooms and finished basements. Floor plans will vary, but always with the idea of having a clear, airy flow throughout the home. But the dÊcor‌ Ah, yes, you know what I’m talking about. Cook meals in an eco-friendly way
Going green can extend to the kitchen, and not only by the appliances one uses -- but also by how one cooks meals. Cooking in an eco-friendly way generally means taking measures to reduce energy in the kitchen. There are several steps that can be taken to cut down on energy usage. 3 Use the microwave. Microwaves heat up water molecules in food to cook it at high speeds. While a person probably can’t cook an entire gourmet meal in the microwave, it certainly can be used for side dishes or to prep food for other methods of cooking. For example, use the microwave to steam fresh vegetables and defrost meat so it cooks more quickly later on in the oven. 3 Use covers on pots. Don’t waste water unnecessarily. Cover pots on the stove when boiling water so that it can come to a boil more quickly. Also, water won’t be lost to evaporation. 3 Turn off the heat. Turn off the gas or electric burner on the stove top 10 minutes before cooking time is finished. The residual heat in a covered pot will continue to cook the food without the need for extra energy. 3 Choose the right cookware.Choose cookware made of metals that conduct heat well so that food is cooked efficiently. Avoid coated pans, as the nonstick coating has been shown to emit noxious fumes and flake off into cooked food. 3 Buy second-hand. One can find durable, well-made cookware and utensils at yard sales or antique shops. Cast iron is a

Gear guide Must-haves for every kitchen
The key to getting any job done right is having the proper tools on hand. The same concept applies to cooking in the kitchen. There are staples and luxuries most homeowners will want to include in their kitchens when designing, decorating and utilizing the spaces. Imagine trying out the latest recipe only to find a mandolin slicer is needed. It can save one time, money and energy by already having the needed equipment in the kitchen. For those who are unsure what to include, consider these options.

Shortcuts for fast meals Many people are busy balancing family life and careers. This can make mealtime challenging. Sometimes it seems easier to go through the drive-through lane of the nearest fast-food restaurant than to spend time in the kitchen. But making dinner doesn’t have to be time-consuming or difficult. Arriving home from work at 6:30 p.m. and then thinking about making dinner leaves many people feeling stressed out. It is possible to create healthy meals the entire family will enjoy with planning and smart time management in the kitchen. Here are some tips that can make

Shortcuts from page 21 for easier meals in a snap. 3 Mark the calendar. Sure it may seem like a page right out of the school cafeteria operations, but planning at least two weeks of meals in advance can alleviate the toughest part of meal creation -- deciding on the menu. This enables a person to shop for all of the ingredients and stock up the pantry and the refrigerator. Come mealtime, it’s simply grab and cook. 3 Prep in advance. Some people like to spend Sunday afternoon precooking items that will be used during the week. For example, one can bake chicken cutlets that can be used for a variety of meals later on. Or slice and dice items so that the preparatory work is done. Package into individual baggies or bowls for later use. Sometimes the longest time spent on meals is the prep work. 3 Take some shortcuts. Not every meal that is cooked needs to be entirely from scratch. Mix fresh-made elements with store-bought options. For example, serve barbecued flank steak with prepared salad greens from
your grocer’s refrigerated section and cornbread from their bakery. 3 Consider breakfast foods. Breakfast foods tend to cook faster and with less prep work than others. One night a week serve pancakes, French toast, omelettes, or Belgian waffles. It’s easy and tasty. 3 Invest in a slow cooker. Slow cookers cook food on very low heat for several hours. Many now feature programmable displays so a person can punch in the cook time and the slow cooker will automatically shut off when done. Individuals can come home after a long day of work and school with an entire meal fully cooked and ready to eat. 3 Stir-fry satisfies. Meats and poultry cut into smaller strips and pieces will cook much faster than an entire steak. Pair this with favorite flavors, such as ginger and teriyaki and seasonal vegetables (fresh or frozen) and serve over rice or noodles. There are dozens of stir-fry recipes a person can create with a little experimentation. 3 Have leftover night. One night of
the week can be set aside for leftovers to clean out the refrigerator. Simply reheat and serve, letting each member of the family concoct a buffetstyle meal, featuring a little of this and a little of that. 3 Make-your-own. Foods that involve participation are enjoyable and often fast. Tacos, fajitas, personal pizzas, nuggets and dipping sauces -- all of these options are quick to make and eat. Plus, they get the kids involved in meal preparation. 3 Pastas a plus. A pot of pasta can be boiled in 7 to 10 minutes. In roughly the same amount of time, it is possible to put together a sauce to top the pasta, whether oil and garlic, tomato or something cream-based. Pasta should be the go-to dish when a person is short on time and needs a hearty meal. Cooking for the family during the week can be done quickly and easily with organization and a little know-how.

Give a great room a warmer feel Many homeowners admit to having ideas about what to do with their homes even before they sign on the dotted line. When a home buyer is shopping for a home, he or she often can’t help envisioning how a given home will look with his or her possessions inside. A growing trend among many homeowners is the open floor plan. These great rooms are ideal for big gatherings of family and friends, but can also confuse homeowners hoping to distinguish between two rooms that might have been combined. For example, great rooms commonly combine a living area and dining room, giving the room a more spacious look but also making it difficult to confidently state where one room ends and the other begins. While great rooms can give the home a relaxed and spacious feel, homeowners can cozy-up such rooms with a few simple tricks of the trade. 3 Accessorize. Certain accessories can match the scale of a room with a high ceiling to make the room seem cozier. Tall plants and bookcases, for instance, work really well when furnishing a room with an especially high ceiling. 3 Remove or avoid mirrors. Mirrors always make a room seem larger, something homeowners should avoid when furnishing a great room. If mirrors must be included, place them in spots where they will not create the illusion of more space. 3 Go big with furniture. This is a no-brainer, but larger furniture can make a great room seem more cozy. When looking for tables, like coffee tables or end tables, avoid tables with glass tops as these create the illusion of space in a fashion similar to mirrors. The placement of furniture can also play a role in how cozy a room feels. Grouping furniture, such as placing a

How to equip your home office As working from home Working from home is growing home, especially when working from home only part-time, the office does not have to be fully stocked. The essentials will probably do the trick. 3 Be flexible with choice of desk. A desk for a home office can be effective whether it’s a folding table or an aesthetically appealing oak desk. Oftentimes, the individual will know what he or she needs. For example, an architect will need a larger desk to spread out blueprints while a writer might be fine working on a smaller desk because he or she does not need much more than a computer. 3 Be choosy with the chair. Employers often look for chairs that discourage slouching and will keep workers comfortable and productive throughout the day. People working from home should also be choosy when finding a workday chair. Cost should not be a major consideration. Instead, comfort should take precedence or it could have adverse effects

on an individual’s health over the course of time. Also, be sure the arms of the chair fit under the desk. 3 Install a second phone line. It’s not ideal to rely on an existing home phone line as the primary means of contact for work. Family or friends might call and force workers to miss important work-related phone calls. Many employers provide a phone line connected to the actual office where the business is located. However, they do not often expect workers to have a work-specific line at their home.

more popular each and every year. Advancements in technology have made it easier than ever before for the nation’s workers to login from their home environment. While working from home has its advantages, one notable disadvantage concerns the furniture. A cubicle or office at an office building comes fully furnished at the employer’s expense, while a home office typically must be furnished entirely by the employee. Those about to furnish their home office should consider the following tips. 3 Don’t overdo it. Home offices need not be as crowded as the standard office building office. In today’s computer age where most files are stored electronically than in file cabinets, a home office does not have to be filled with numerous file cabinets, shelving units or tons of drawer space. A room in the house devoted entirely to male interests is becoming much more popular in recent years. The “man cave,” as it’s come to be called, can shun the decorating style of the rest of the house, and decor may be all the choice of its visionary creator. The man’s domain is no longer relegated to the garage or a dusty corner in the basement. Today’s guys are devoting an entire room to a particular interest of their choice. Some prefer a work-out room with equipment that rivals the nearest gym. Others want to deck-out the room in surround sound and a projection screen to create the ultimate hometheater experience. According to a recent
survey by ServiceMagic, a business that connects homeowners with contractors, about 40 percent of respondents said that they have a man cave or room in their home and another 13 percent said the male domain is in the planning or construction phase. No matter what the man cave will entail, there are some steps guys can take to ensure the plans go smoothly. 3 Create the theme. This is a chance for the man to dream up any design style he prefers. Maybe the walls will be covered in sports memorabilia. Perhaps he desires a dark, solitary space. The room can also be a mix and match of

Furniture arranging 101: Your space - maximized When presented with an empty room in a new home, most people are a bit apprehensive about where to start. It can be difficult to picture where to place a sofa or how to arrange a chaise lounge. Although interior decorators may seem to have the knack for knowing where to place furniture, arranging items that are already owned or new furniture is something just about anyone can master. Before furniture can be placed, certain questions should be answered and room layouts examined. Consider the following: 3 Is the room used to travel through to another room? If so, a pathway will need to be left so that walking unhindered is possible. 3 Where are the doors and windows located? Furniture should not be placed where it can interfere with a door being opened fully or block too much light. 3 How is the room used? For ex-
ample, furniture shouldn’t be placed in a family room so that individuals constantly have to walk past the television and block watchers’ views. If a room is used as a sitting space, furniture should be geared around bookshelves or a fireplace. 3 What space is available? Too much furniture in a room can create the appearance of clutter. It can also make maneuvering around the room difficult. Keep furniture scale and quantity in mind when decorating. It may be wise to remove some pieces if the room is overrun with items. Once the general idea of where furniture will be placed is decided, it helps to take measurements to ensure everything will fit. There’s little point hefting around heavy furniture only to move it back to its starting position if something doesn’t fit correctly. Making a reduced-scale model of the room and moving paper cut-outs of the furniture is much easier on the back than mov-
ing the furniture itself. There also is software that can be installed on the computer that enables homeowners to see how furniture will look once arranged. Now that the time has come to place the furniture, follow these guidelines. 3 Coffee tables or ottomans should be set 14 to 18 inches away from the couch. Adjust accordingly to meet the needs of homeowners. 3 Televisions should be placed at a distance three-times the size of the screen. However, some of the very-large televisions will simply have to be placed closer. Otherwise they could very well be in the next room. 3 The average adult requires 20 inches of breathing room for dining room chairs. Allow an additional 16 inches of room for pushing the chairs out to get up from the seat. 3 Make sure the edge of a bed is

Furniture from page 31 at least 24 inches away from a wall so that sleepers can enter and exit the bed comfortably. There are some other tips to keep in mind when arranging furniture. * Consider the safety of young
children. Choose furniture that doesn’t have sharp edges or temporarily cover these edges. * Figure out the focal point of the room (a fireplace or picture window) and arrange furniture to complement, not block, this
feature. * Protect floors and walls when moving furniture. * Enlist the help of strong individuals to move furniture. Don’t risk injury by doing it alone.
Decorating from page 18 loons were suspended from the ceiling. I thought taking the dÊcor into a 3-D application was a great notion. That room gave me the idea to hang pennants along a string in my son’s sports-themed bedroom, as well as a many-sided metal star from the ceiling in my bedroom. A bathroom at a Parade of Homes a few years back had a nautical theme, with bright blues and crisp whites used as a background for surfboard and seashell art. I decided to go with a similar theme for my children’s bathroom, using the same color palette, but highlighting sea life, such as star fish, instead of surfing. That theme has stood me in good stead, whereas if I had gone for a more juvenile feel, I would probably be looking at redecorating by now. Perhaps the biggest influence felt by touring a Parade of Homes can be seen in our basement at home. Each year, many of the homes feature a media room, with seating ar-
ranged around a flat screened television, a fully-stocked bar that just spells entertaining and a gaming area, complete with card table, video games and other fun pursuits. My husband, along with my brother, father and father-inlaw, created a similar space in our basement, complete with play area for the kids, seating area suitable for a card game and big screened TV with DVD player, video game system and enough seating for family and friends. I can’t wait to visit this year’s Parade of Homes, to discover what colors are hot right now, see what new decorating ideas area firms have come up with and look at window treatments (mine could use some updating.) So although many people will be focusing on the structure of the houses at this September’s Parade in Mallard’s Landing, I will be eyeing the “innards, which help inspire me in my own home.

any style, as long as it’s the desire of the guy. 3 Tech it out. Chances are the focal point of the man cave will be a big-screen television. If budget allows, go for the biggest and best TV with all the peripheral equipment. If budget is a bit more modest, shop around for a deal and see what can be picked up from swap
Web sites or online bidding sites. Also, check out the classified section of the newspaper to find local deals on equipment being unloaded by others for a steal. 3 Furnish the place. The cornerstone piece of furniture could be a large leather sectional to fit many guy friends. Or, if the man cave is to be a solitary spot, a comfortable recliner. Remember to also include a small
refrigerator for refreshments. 3 Lock it up. For those who want to keep the man cave off-limits, install a lock to keep unwanted visitors out. 3 Enjoy the space. The man cave is a place where guys can kick back and relax and do what they prefer - something that may be off limits in the rest of the house.
Great room from page 27 sofa and loveseat around the television and placing an armchair near a window for reading, can make a room feel more intimate. Furniture does not have to be placed solely around the edges of a room, especially in larger rooms that homeowners want to give a warmer feel. 3 Let the floor be your guide. Oftentimes, the floor is the best means to distinguishing between rooms. Rugs can be placed on wood flooring to
help distinguish between rooms, and homeowners can even use different types of wood flooring to ensure residents and guests know which room is which. Homeowners hoping to give their great room a warmer feel can do so in a number of easy ways that won’t require too much work or too much money.
