Parkside trees to be planted on schedule By Ellen Leahy

Phases two and three of the Parkside Development between Fennell and West Elizabeth Streets continue to be a village planning board agenda item. Forty four trees are scheduled to be planted in Parkside’s phases two and three. At last week’s meeting, it was decided that the trees for phase two, need to be planted in the Spring. A member of the village’s tree committee, Ann Neibert, came before the board concerned about trees being planted before there are property owners to care of them properly. She also expressed a concern about trees getting in the way of construction.

Architect, Eagle Scout Steve Krause, 50, dies in car crash By Ellen Leahy There is no greater representation of strength and skill in America than the stately eagle. Eagle Scout, architect, brother, son, father of four and beloved husband of Dorothy Brace Krause, Steven “Steve” Krause, 50, died Saturday Oct. 16 after injuries suffered in a one car crash in Spafford. As a prominent architect and citizen of Central New York, it is fair to say that Steve’s character, intellect and charm were equal to other famous Eagle Scouts such as Jimmy Stewart, Walter Cronkite and Steven Spielberg.

Steve was a partner in Quinlivan, Pierik and Krause Design (QPK), an architecture firm based in Syracuse. His father Alfred Krause, also of Skaneateles, had been a partner before him. Other than his remarkable family, Steve was best known in Skaneateles for designing the new Fire House that sits on the corner of Route 41A (Kane Avenue) and Route 20. In a village where a lot of thought is given to retaining architectural integrity and character, Krause’s fire station fit in – immediately – with its form and function in perfect harmony with the community. Village codes enforcement officer,

president of SAVES and member of the fire department Jorge Batlle said, “I’ve known him for many years and he is one of the finest architects I’d ever been involved with.” Batlle said Krause would look at something in front of the planning board and see something you wouldn’t have imagined. “He had a great eye for detail,” Batlle said. Paul Murphy, a 40 year veteran of the Skaneateles Volunteer Fire Department (SVFD), said when they originally started designing the fire house, Krause suggested the idea of incorporating the department’s antique fire apparatus into the design. Loveless’ Krebs served its final meal Oct. 16 By Ellen Leahy Like every night before, Larry Loveless was the consummate restaurateur ‘til the end. Meaning he closed down and buttoned up his kitchen before ascending to the cocktail lounge to visit with the many locals who had come to the Krebs for one last time. “The night, actually the whole weekend, was well attended,” said Steve White, a longtime resident and owner of White and White Antiques, which will handle the Krebs auction on Nov. 13. Christy Lemp’s ‘New leaf’ Watercolors on display at the Sherwood Oct. 23 and 24 Skaneateles’ Christy Lemp will be the featured artist at the Sherwood Inn for October. A reception for Lemp’s paintings will be from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 23 and Sunday, Oct. 24. All are invited to meet the artist and enjoy wine and cheese in the lobby. Her exhibit, “A New Leaf,” features watercolor landscapes and moments in time that are intimately rendered, focusing on CNY, Maine and Florida. Many are painted on site, and portray everyday scenes that make you stop and smile; a neighbor’s tulips, pumpkins on the porch, birds in the backyard or a misty morning on the lake. She said there is an energy in these moments, especially in the early morning or late afternoon light that the transparency and luminosity of watercolors really convey. Lemp loves meeting people who appreciate art and the beautiful scenery our area offers.

Her works are in private collections throughout Central New York and Florida. She can also be commissioned and here is feedback a happy customer. “I have always wanted a painting of my garden capturing all the colors, lighting and various textures of the scene I am attempting to create. You have accomplished that in both paintings.” The artist lives in Skaneateles with her husband Don (SHS ’73) and their talented offspring. She especially enjoys exploring the lakeside and country roads for images and ideas to paint. Her artwork is also on display year round at M. Lemp Jewelers in downtown Syracuse. Contact Lemp at cdlemp5@gmail.com. Musings and sketches can be viewed at christyswatercolorblogspot.com.

shunned by the rest of the population. They wandered the streets like a pack of wild dogs, he said. Encountering one of these children, he asked why won’t you come to Mass and pray, “God loves you. The child said, we pray and we know God loves us, but the people don’t want us there. Then Major asked St. Mary’s congregation, “Would you accept a leper into your church? he paused and then asked, “Would you ask a black person? Would you accept a gay? Major was to say Mass again at 10:15 a.m., then would be heading back to the Sudan, to Malakal on the Nile, which is the dividing line between the Moslem north and the Christian south. Father Major asked the congregation to pray for the people of the Sudan, especially now as the timeline approaches when the south might officially gain independence from the north, making two separate countries, which could effectively end years of war, or some fear, could spark another civil war. Peter’s brother, Charlie Major explained, “A few months ago a Northern militia group attacked Malakal killing about 70 civilians. The UN troops had to come and rescue Peter’s superior who was visiting from London, as his house was hit by automatic weapons fire. So you see there is a real danger no matter which side wins the election. Our government and others are trying diplomatic means to calm the situation.

Skaneateles’ native son, Father Peter Major interpreted the Gospel at St. Mary’s 8 a.m. Mass in the village on Sunday Oct. 10 before returning to the Sudan. It was the one about 10 lepers visibly sick and shunned by the rest of the citizenry. The lepers asked Christ to show mercy. Christ cured them. And then, all, but one, ran off. It turned out that this one was a lone Samaritan among nine Jews. He instead came to the Lord and gave him thanks and praise for showing his mercy. Father Major, a missionary stationed in the Sundan, told the congregation that in 2001 he was in the women’s prison in Khartoum, where there were women and their children numbering in the 800s incarcerated. As Christmas was approaching the population began to become even more anxious that they would spend the holy day caged up. They looked to Father Major for help, he said, “We must look to the Lord. They came together as he said Mass and they prayed. “True story, he said to St. Mary’s congregation. After that Mass, the warden came in holding up a piece of paper. It was a document to release the women and children, who were immediately set free. Three Muslim women came to Father Major and thanked him for his prayers and for saying Mass. The others just left.

What are your visions?

A letter

The story of my life

On March 28, 2010, while digging holes for perc tests at Billy Miles property, I felt a very strong pain, in the middle of my chest. I had to lay down on the job, because I couldn’t stand up. Billy realized, I was having problems. He called dispatch and SAVES was there a minute. Time being of the essence, it took 38 minutes to get to Crouse Hospital. Jeff Holbrook of SAVES and Dr. Battaglia from Crouse Hospital saved my life. The Skaneateles Communications Center Dispatcher knew where Billy Miles lived and knew how to direct SAVES to the area of the property where I could be found. A call to 911 would have taken more time, which I couldn’t afford. Thanks everyone for saving my life. I was privileged to again be provided such great service, which by the way, I’ve known for all 40 years, I lived here. We can only hope, 911 can save as many lives as the Communication Center did. The news yesterday about the Google guys building an underwater power transmission grid to service the future offshore wind turbines was very visionary. It reminded me of a family saga about my great-grandfather, Henry Curtis Spalding (if the name sounds familiar it’s because my son Curt is named after him). Henry Curtis was a visionary, an inventor, promoter and developer. He apparently had a successful product called Spalding Glue that yielded an award of a medal from the New York City business Council for his “Outstanding Product.” I have a copy of the Award Dinner program. He also spent some years in Russia trying to establish a department store like Macy’s in several large cities. My grandfather, Joseph W., had to wait for HCS to settle his project in Russia so he could get married. Joseph’s bride later cautioned her daughter-in-law not to let my father get involved with inventing or developing any revolutionary projects. I found some promotional material for Atlantic Cable that he was working on, trying to raise capital about 20 years before it was actually accomplished. I also found topographic sheets and drawings for the locks on the St. Lawrence River and donated them to the Canal Museum in Syracuse. Let us say he was a bit early on that one, too. The marine construction for the St. Lawrence Seaway was finally done by Mr. Wikstrom in the late 50s. Henry Curtis had two wives. One of them put up the

money and established the family cemetery plot in Middletown Connecticut. She rounded up the ancestors and got them all planted in one place on a very pretty hill next to Along the Wesleyan College. It is full now, so Lakeshore Sue and I will probably have to join the Lakeview crowd. Henry Curtis was the only family inventor. My granddad Joseph had a successful bank in New Rochelle and was wiped out by the 1929 crash while at sea, returning from Europe. His brother Chester was an electrical engineer who worked closely with Thomas Edison in Schenectady. My dad was a mechanical metallurgical engineer who never lost a day’s work or invented anything. The Google guys are very fortunate, because they can do a great deal prospecting with a little bit of the $5 billion profit from their corporation. I’m heading off on a cruise. I am quite enamored of steamships and usually find someplace to steam along, with stops that are interesting to Sue. She likes the land tours and I just like to watch the waves go by. My lakeshore home lets me watch waves go by, but the house doesn’t have any motion.

Stress is a word we all know! It is a fact of life and non-discriminatory. Whether you are young, old or somewhere in between, stress can and will affect you at some point in your life. Can you relate? Believe it or not, stress is not all “bad.” There really is such a thing as “good” stress. It can be defined as how one feels when they experience a sudden financial gain or when the pressure to meet life’s challenges manifests in a positive, fun way. It energizes us and can motivate us to do better at things we care about. It is not the “good” stress, however, that I want to focus on. Let’s talk about “bad” stress. As most of us know, bad stress can be overwhelming. It is the pressure we feel when life is crazy and things aren’t going according to the plan. The loss of a job, death, divorce, poor nutrition, chronic pain, obesity, marriage and children are some good examples of life challenges that cause such stress. Constant stress of this type eventually leads to the deterioration of our physical, emotional and mental health. And, to make matters worse, when an individual’s health is compromised due to stress, it leads to more stress ... a

viscous cycle. With today’s current economic conditions, stress levels in our society have reached a high. The Washington Post reported: ✔ 54 percent of Americans are concerned about the level of stress in their everyday lives. ✔ 62 percent of Americans say work has a significant impact on stress levels. ✔ 73 percent of Americans name money as the number one factor that affects their stress level. ✔ An increasing numbers of children, teenagers and college students report feeling under stress. The good news is that when stress levels gets too high there are warning signs. Physical symptoms can include fatigue, breathlessness, back pain, changes in appetite, headaches and sleeping problems. Emotional signs can be anger, anxiety, depression, forgetfulness, worthlessness and an overall unhappiness with life. And, behavioral signals such as crying easily, an inability to get along with friends and family, use of alcohol, tobacco and/or other drugs and a general

withdrawal from society may be exhibited. Most people frequently experience some of these warning signs. Unfortunately, they generally ignore them causing their stress to spiral out of control. Serious? Yes! It is time for America to wake up and slow down. We must change our lifestyles and eliminate as much stress as possible so that we can look, live and feel ... better on a daily basis. How do we eliminate stress? First, it is necessary to determine the exact cause of the stress so the process of managing it can begin. Keeping a daily journal is a great way to track the cause and affect of stress in your life. The journal should be specific and include “the bad, the good and the ugly.” This makes it a fun activity that can lead the way to discovering exactly what sets your stress in motion and the actions you can take to stop contributing towards it. Successful stress reduction/management, in most cases, requires major lifestyle changes. Consistent-

ly eating a well-balanced diet, eliminating toxins in the body, supplementing, cutting back on caffeine, learning to relax the mind, body and spirit; and avoiding situations that make you feel stressed are a must. Additionally, laughing and smiling, exercising, meditating, being optimistic, getting organized, planning ahead, setting goals, learning how to say “no” to others and making time for oneself can help alleviate stress, even if it is temporary. Relieving stress will be a lifelong challenge as there will never be a shortage of stressors. However, once you make the choice to take the journey to a more stress-free lifestyle, you will learn what coping skills work best for you. If you need help, ask for it! Seeking professional help is smart and shows that you are committed to healthy change. You can start by contacting your healthcare provider. They can offer information and make suggestions on stress management techniques that may work best for you.

Murphy also noted that Krause was a great mediator. “He was good at bringing our own people together, Murphy said, noting that the members of the department had different points of view. Krause was good at boiling their thinking down into a cohesive plan. Skaneateles village mayor Bob Green said, “I think he left his imprint on the community with the fire station. It was 18 years getting that fire station built, Green said, adding that when Krause got involved, “His expertise made that building work in that location. After the fire station was built, Krause came to Green and said he wanted to give back to the community. When a position became available on the planning board, Green appointed Krause. Steve and wife Beverly dined on the seven course dinner downstairs Friday night and then upstairs Saturday for their usual supper in the tavern. Steve said he always ordered the same thing, New England clam chowder and scallops wrapped in bacon topped off with Larry’s sumptuous bread pudding. Larry and Jan’s daughter, Kim Loveless Seabury, came from Albany to help her father over the last weekend. “Larry refers to her as ‘Miss Martha Stewart,’ Steve said. “She was running around attending to everything. Jackie Truswell, who has been the glue holding the restaurant together since Jan passed, stopped in with husband Roy for one drink and instead stayed for several hours talking with old friends and former Krebs staff members who also turned out for the occasion. Steve wondered how Larry knew what to bring in for inventory, considering that business was steadily rising as people wanted to get to Krebs for one last meal before the restaurant went dark on Sunday Oct. 17. “I can’t tell you how I do it, I feel it and it just happens, Larry said. “He got it right, Steve said of the wind down that actually wound way up ever since Larry announced the sale to Adam Weitsman was final in August. Loveless was the longest running owner of Krebs with 52 years. Steve referred to last weekend at the Krebs as a “Nice Fest, people were certainly celebrating a favorite local watering hole, a celebration that also produced a lot of tears. Larry’s retirement was, of course, ultimately bittersweet as his wife and business partner of 47 years, Jan P. Loveless, passed away unexpectedly on July 8. When he sold their three properties on W. Genesee Street in the village of Skaneateles that included the

Krebs Restaurant he said, “This was the plan. I’m just upset Jan isn’t here to enjoy it.

The late Sarto Major is the subject of an award winning documentary by Maureen Meyer.

Meyers wins State Archives Award The Board of Regents and the New York Archives have selected Skaneateles High School student Maureen Meyer as the recipient of the 2010 Laura and Robert Chodos Award for Excellence in Student Research Using Historical Records, Grades 9-12 for her entry “Sarto Major: Law Enforcement during the 1920s. A framed certificate and a cash gift was presented to Meyer at a luncheon ceremony at the Cultural Education Center in Albany on Oct. 12. Her teacher, Susan Pingel, was also recognized at the luncheon. Using a variety of historical records and artifacts, Maureen Meyer researched the life of Sarto Major, a police officer in Skaneateles during the Prohibition. Meyer actually lives in the home of the man she researched. She developed an interest in Officer Major after seeing artifacts left behind in the house, such as; name plates from his years as sheriff and bloodstained police batons. Her detective work led her to discover a man of great conviction whose career was shaped by the Prohibition. Her

documentary does an excellent job of showing the effect a national law had in a town in central New York. She also discusses the national effects of the Volstead Act. For example, the documentary mentions the increase in funding for police departments, the drastic increase in population in the federal prisons, and the beginning of organized crime. The Student Research Awards are named for Regent Emerita Laura Chodos and her late husband, Dr. Robert Chodos, who created an endowment to encourage the educational uses of historical records in the classroom. The awards are presented annually to a student or group of students in New York who have made outstanding use of historical records in their research. They recognize student work for demonstrating excellence based on specific criteria: using a variety of historical records, drawing on information from those records, and interpreting and integrating that information with creativity and imagination. “We are very pleased to recognize

the winning teachers and students of Walden Elementary School, Murray Avenue School, Northport Middle School, and Skaneateles for their outstanding projects which earned them top honors in the New York State Archives’ annual student research awards, said State Archivist Christine Ward. “Each year, we invite students and educators from throughout the state to conceive projects, which utilize primary source records to explore New York’s glorious past. From hundreds of submissions, we select the very finest. It is our hope that the enjoyment that these young people and their mentors derived in putting together these award winning efforts will make history relevant for them in the near future and throughout their academic careers. The annual Archives Awards program recognizes outstanding efforts in archives and records management work in New York State by a broad range of individuals and organizations.

Upstate Shredding’s Mega Auto Shredder is ‘round-the-clock’

THE OWEGO PLANT: Upstate Shredding is flourishing in this economy, including 18-wheel tractors and trailers and buses. Designed to accommodate a 10,000 hp motor, the M122 represents the latest advancements in machine automation and computer controls for maximum processing efficiency, safety, noise reduction and energy conservation. The new in-feed system is a steel-belted conveyor that delivers raw scrap metal into the feed chute of the shredder. The new downstream conveyor and ferrous metal separation portion consists of six SGM 72 x 110 inch electromagnetic drum units. Over the past few years the company has made substantial investments in plant and equipment, including a $25 million dollar upgrade to its Owego operation that recently saw the installation of the world’s most technically sophisticated non-ferrous metal separation system. The company is progressing towards an annual goal of $1 billion dollars in annual debt-free sales. It operates two facilities in Owego, one each in Binghamton and Ithaca and recently acquired scrap metal companies in Syracuse, Jamestown and Liberty and is in the process of acquiring a new facility in Northeastern Pennsylvania.

A few long time residents still tell tales of a more ‘colorful’ side of Skaneateles nightlife of that time. It’ s tavern talk and blue collar stories often accelerated by having a ‘cold one’ after a hard day. There were more than a few teeming watering holes in Skaneateles during those years –the Town House, the Sherwood Inn,The Run of Stone, Fabin’s, the Jazz Barn and Morris’ s Grill to name a few, all competing for the working man’ s imbibing dollar. And, of course, there was the Lakeview House, right next door to the bank (now First National Gifts). “At that time the bars in Cayuga County closed at 1a.m.,” recounts Skaneateles resident Joe Sullivan, “and ‘ last call’ (just over the county line) in Skaneateles was 3 a.m. The bars would fill up with folks from the Auburn area and there was more than one place to go.” So, girls with short skirts and white boots, especially Skaneateles girls, made the Lakeview House the place to go. “It was what you call a ‘ blue collar bar’ a real working man’ s tavern,” recalls Charlie Major long time village resident and deputy town historian. Major, who is a town justice today, was also on the bench back in those days. “Yeah, there were go-go dancers at the Lake View House. It was a popular attraction with the highway department workers crowd. Sometimes it got more than a little rowdy.” During this time tavern goers could stand outside with a beverage in hand and enjoy the night air. Also during this time the town’ s post office was located on Genesee Street, where the Packwood House is now (on the site of the former Sun Dial Park). Bar hopping patrons would often deposit their remaining beverages into the post boxes sitting in front of the post office. This resulted in headaches for the understaffed local police and an open container law was established and strictly enforced. The Lakeview house knocked off selling food and beverage on the ground floor, with its last business being ‘Imagine’ - an artisan gallery. “Imagine” has moved down the street - to be incorporated in its sister gallery,”Imagine That.” Most of those taverns have changed hands and business formats, too, and along with them, went the likelihood of dancing girls, at least on salary, in downtown Skaneateles. Although with any passing, there is always the chance of a haunting. Maybe one or two in a short skirt and white boots? Just in time for Halloween. More about the cupola

The historic cupola will be restored onsite and placed back atop a new building as part of the project’s penthouse condominium. Construction of The Lakeview House Condominiums, which will house four residential condos and one retail condo, is expected to be completed in the Fall of 2011.

Riverside Engineering will begin installation of a new model M-122 auto shredder at Upstate Shredding LLC in Owego, New York commencing on Nov. 26. The initial phase of the installation is scheduled to occur over eight days with Riverside’s field staff and local trades working in shifts, 24-hours a day to complete the project. “What usually takes several weeks in our industry for this work will be done in days. Upstate’s yard is one of the busiest in the country. By completing the new in-feed roller conveyor system and downstream ferrous metal separation system quickly we will cause minimum disruption allowing shredding and processing to continue as usual while we work,” said Rusty Manning, Riverside’s Director of New Equipment Sales. A second phase that includes the shredder section will be installed in February also on a similar expedited schedule. This upgrade to the facility is one hundred percent debt free. Custom built for Upstate with an input capacity of 122-inches, Riverside’s M122 is among the largest shredders in the world and the highest capacity currently on the market. It can process up to 400-tons of metal per hour, uses 1,000 pound hammers, and can ingest the largest vehicles on the road today

HIALEAH, FL—An ingredient often used to treat inflammation in race horse legs, is now back on the market in its original doctor recommended clinical formula. According to a national drug store survey, the formula at one time became so popular that it rose to the top of pharmacy sales for topical pain relievers. But the company marketing the product at the time changed the formula and sales plummeted. One of the inventors of the original formula has brought it back to the market under the trade name ARTH ARREST and says it can relieve pain for millions. ARTH ARREST works by a dual mechanism whereby one ingredient relieves pain immediately, while a second ingredient seeks out and destroys the pain messenger signal before it can be sent to the brain. Considered a medical miracle by some, the ARTH ARREST formula is useful in the treatment of painful disorders ranging from minor aches and pains to more serious conditions such as arthritis, bursitis, rheumatism, tendonitis, and more. ARTH ARREST is available in a convenient roll-on applicator at pharmacies without a prescription or call 1-800-339-3301. Now at: 09764

Lakers boys soccer rally past CBA By Phil Blackwell Even as the state’s topranked Class B team, the Skaneateles boys soccer Lakers had no intentions of letting up even one second as it moved closer to an undefeated regular season. And even when the Lakers’ perfect mark was in serious jeopardy during Saturday’s game against Christian Brothers Academy, it mustered the will for a stirring second-half comeback to beat the Brothers by a score of 3-2. Not only did Skaneateles face a first-class foe in CBA, one of the top programs in Central New York, it also had to play into the teeth of a howling wind in the first half. And that would help the Brothers bolt to a 2-0 lead. A defensive mistake allowed CBA’s Ryan Pond to break open and beat Trevor Diamond for the first goal, Nick Papayanakos earning the assist. And when the Lakers committed a foul inside its own 18-yard box, Kris Triana converted the penalty kick. Diamond stopped everything else and would finish with 10 saves. Just as impor-

tantly, he and the Lakers’ defense kept the game 2-0 until the second half rolled around – when Skaneateles would have the win at its back. Staying patient, the Lakers finally had its breakthrough in the 54th minute when, off A.J. Richichi’s blocked shot, Jeff Baldetti put the rebound past David Henderson. A mere 20 seconds later, the Lakers attacked again and Kevin Rice fired home the tying goal. Just like that, it was 2-2, and Skaneateles continued to push hard. In the 65th minute, that effort paid off when Rice got possession of the ball, went to the middle and ripped another shot past Henderson to put his team ahead. Beginning a stretch where it would play six times in the last two weeks of the regular season, the Lakers met Solvay last Tuesday and bashed the Bearcats 9-1. Skaneateles took 34 shots on this night, a continual assault that led to, among other things, Jeff Baldetti recording a three-goal hat trick, plus an assist. Richichi found the net twice, adding an assist as Rice got one goal and one

assist. Austin Amory, Trevor Hinman and Ryan Higman also converted, with Spencer Parker and Alex Brownlee chiming in with assists. Stepping out of league play on Thursday afternoon, the Lakers visited Bishop Grimes and, ignoring the wet and muddy conditions, rolled to a 6-1 victory over the Cobras. All through the first half, Skaneateles sent waves of attacks into Grimes’ end, and it worked as, with Parker and Richichi, leading the way, the Lakers bolted to a 5-0 lead by halftime. For the game, Parker produced two goals and one assist, while Richichi helped everyone else out as he got a season-best three assists. Amory, Brownlee, Ryan Farrell and Kevin Rice each took turns getting goals as Hinman and B.J. Kerr also found their way to the assist column. The CBA rally served as momentum for the last week of the regular season, where Skaneateles would try to get past Fabius-Pompey, Jordan-Elbridge and long-time rival Marcellus. The Class B playoff announcements take place on Sunday.

2010

By Phil Blackwell Just as the narrative is about to end and the curtain is about to crash on the Skaneateles girls soccer team, it finds some new life. It was, mostly, a defensive effort when the Lakers went to Earl Hadley Stadium last Tuesday night and emerged with a 1-0 victory over the playoff-bound Solvay Bearcats. Skaneateles, just 2-8-2 entering the game, had lost to Solvay back on Sept. 16, and for a long time it appeared the rematch would take the same trajectory. The Bearcats camped out in the Lakers’ end throughout the first half, but could not convert. The same thing held true in the second half. Constantly working, the Skaneateles defense turned away chances, and goalie Mary Buck stopped all 17 shots thrown at her.

Rarely did the Lakers get a chance to counter – but in the 59th minutes, Emma Ford broke open and beat Solvay goalie Chelsea Root for the only goal of the night. With newfound momentum on its side, Skaneateles returned home Thursday and, while celebrating Senior Night, toyed with Hannibal, beating the Warriors 4-0. In all, Skaneateles took 25 shots, and that relentless pressure led to a pair of conversions in each half. Taylor Kerr, in particular, hurt Hannibal as she poured in two goals and one assist, while Diane Vitkus and Rachel Hurley also converted. Carly Davis and Bridget Field chimed in with one assist apiece. Two more games remained – a league trip to Jordan-Elbridge and a non-league test against defending Class A champion Jamesville-DeWitt – as the Lakers merely needed to beat the Eagles to assure a post-season trip.

Swimmers roll past Caz By Phil Blackwell Clearly, the best part of the Skaneateles girls swim team’s 100-80 victory over Cazenovia last Thursday at the Community Center was not the fact that it won the battle of Laker teams and improved to 5-2 on the season. It was that seven different Skaneateles swimmers took turns winning races, not even including the 200 medley relay, where Gaelyn Price, Holly Ross, Krissy Chalupnicki and Haley Bucholtz tore to a winning time of 2:14.30. Price earned her own title in the 50 freestyle in 28.73 seconds. Meanehile, Chalupnicki would return in the 200 freestyle relay, where she, along with Courtney Pitman, Brittany Williams and Kelsey Beyor, finished first in 2:09.02. Rachael DeWitt had a strong 200 freestyle, where she won in 2:09.24, just before Sarah Sawyer needed 2:40.96 for first place in the 200 individual medley. Nikki Cole swam the 100 butterfly in 1:10.50, with Amanda Shoenfelt first in the 100 freesteyle (1:01.84) and Paige Williams needing 6:45.02 to beat the field in the 500 freestyle. Emily Wirth added a 100 backstroke title in 1:18.66. Skaneateles would remain at home Monday night to face Auburn, who had a 3-2 mark in the CNY Counties League. The regular season concludes Oct. 27 with a meet against Manlius-Pebble Hill.

Skaneateles girls blank Solvay, Hannibal

Forget the elements on hand, or the road setting, or the improved nature of the Skaneateles football team. Westhill was not about to surrender the Class B West division title, even if it had to share this time around. Skaneateles is also bound for the post-season - but it received the full brunt of the Warriors Friday night, especially in the second half as a tight, tense affair transformed into a 51-14 defeat that secured for Westhill a tie for the league title and, again, a top seed for the Class B playoffs. It did not take too long for Westhill to establish itself against a wounded Skaneateles defense, despite the howling wind and cold rain that blew through the Lakers’ home field and the emotions everyone felt on Senior Night. Twice in the first quarter, the Warriors came up with scoring drives, the offensive line punishing the Lakers as R.J. Chester, fast becoming Westhill’s feature back,

climaxed both marches with touchdown runs - one of three yards, the other of 33 yards. He also made both extra points and would go seven-for-seven on the night with PATs. When Matt Trendowski scored on a four-yard run early in the second quarter, Westhill had a 21-0 lead and threatened to end it quickly. To its credit, though, Skaneateles would climb back into the contest before halftime. Though it was tough to throw in the gusty conditions, Conor Herr still pieced together a pair of scoring marches, ending them with short touchdown passes - five yards to Jacob Cooney, then (after a Westhill fumble that Luke Drancsak recovered) eight yards to Brandon Barron, who also caught a twopoint pass. Thus, at halftime the Lakers only trailed 21-14, and was one big play from pulling even. And a big play happened - only it was Westhill’s defense doing the honors as it recorded a safety early in the third quarter, just the start of an

avalanche of 30 unanswered points. Trendowski hit on his second and third TD’s before the third period was done as he scored on runs of one and eight yards. Not to be left out, Nathan Nigolian returned a punt 45 yards for six points in the fourth quarter, and Nick Vitagliano broke loose for a 57-yard touchdown in the final minutes. Herr threw 48 passes, completing 19 of them for 169 yards. James Smith had a team-high six catches, though it covered just 37 yards as Cooney had three catches for 53 yards. Ryan Sherman led the Lakers’ defense with eight tackles, as Drancsak and Tyler Saunders each got seven tackles and Ryan Dick got six tackles. Skaneateles now knows that it will face Class B East division champion Cazenovia next Saturday in the first round of the sectional playoffs. Those other Lakers, who played in Class C last fall, went 7-0 in the regular season and Gridiron, page 11

On the food front

Apples and hard cheese

ELLEN LEAHY

DAMAGED GOODS: The two apples on the left display frost damage from early spring, whereas the apple on right had been hit by hail this past summer.

12

By Ellen Leahy Consider that the apple is similar to citrus fruit because it is picked ripe, and then it holds its ripeness for a long period of time. Contrast this with pears and peaches, which are often not ripe when picked; pears and peaches should not be refrigerated until they ripen. And then, when it ripens, it’s ready for one glorious day. These should be eaten that day or held in refrigeration; and still they continues to age and bruise more rapidly than an apple. One myth about apples is that they don’t require refrigeration; can instead be held at room temperature in a fruit bowl. But ask any apple grower, length of time out of refrigeration will cause flavor and texture deterioration. Here’s a test, note how delicious an apple’s skin is right out of the orchard and

compare this to an apple that has been sitting around. The fresh apple’s skin adds flavor and a contrast in texture, whereas the older apple skin seems to just blend in. Inside the fresh apple’s fruit is juicy and crisp. Whereas the older apple’s flesh will lack that crispness and instead be soft. The same is true for hard cheeses Several years ago I was hired to tour about a dozen of Manhattan’s finest cheese shops (Zabar’s, Murray’s, Fairway Market, Dean & DeLuca, et al) by Parmigiano Reggiano’s consortium of 1400 farmers. These are the producers from Modena, Parma and Reggio Emilia and also partially Bologna and Mantova, the regions in Italy where Parmigiano Reggiano is produced. This cow’s milk cheese has been made the same way for more than 800 years, and is aged

for a minimum of one and a half years. The Italians had heard that their cheese was often displayed and sold at room temperature, something which was greatly disturbing. Once the 80 pound wheel is cut, they recommend their cheese being wrapped tightly in plastic wrap and refrigerated. We found most of the shops were actually merchandising the cheese unrefrigerated. This prompted a massive campaign to train American cheese vendors to keep the King of Cheeses refrigerated. Will leaving apples and hard cheese out spoil the product? Not ask quickly as other fruits and cheeses, but also the right answer is yes (over time). Refrigerating will lengthen these products shelf life and contribute to a better flavor experience. So, why risk it?

ARIES You are compelled to really know what could bring you a better life. It’s possible that you will have to discuss some financial matters with great firmness. TAURUS You are heading towards situations which are completely different to anything you have experienced before. You will become more and more independent where your ambitions are concerned. GEMINI Planet Mercury causes you to wish to improve in your work. You are really determined to do things with great care. CANCER You are caught up in situations which make you feel that you would like to have more moral liberty. This particularly concerns your memories.

Leo

LEO You are capable of better affirming exactly who you are on a human level. Take care of your health as sometimes you could be easily exhausted.

Virgo

VIRGO Planet Jupiter causes you to believe in your good fortune and in your capacity to face up to some startling things. You know how to behave with tact and subtlety.

Scorpio

LIBRA At the moment you have a huge need to feel morally young. This is important to you. You like your life. SCORPIO The Black Moon causes you to experience several things concerning your inner life. You are very surprised to realize how much people love your charisma.

SAGITTARIUS At the moment, you can be confident in Sagittarius yourself and see what a positive effect your actions have on others. This makes you happy. CAPRICORN You are stubborn and have every reason Capricorn to be so. You are capable of ensuring that everything improves for you and for the person you love.

Aquarius

Pisces

AQUARIUS You feel isolated in several situations which are connected to your feelings. You prefer to be reserved and you do not wish to talk about what you are experiencing in a trivial manner. PISCES You are getting closer to certain situations which are important to you. You are capable of better attesting to the meaning behind what you are experiencing.

Would you like to wish someone a Happy Birthday? Birthday greetings are available for $15, and if you’d like to include a photo, cost is just $20!
