Spring Spruce Up Forsythia: Surest sign spring has arrived Here’s a primer on the season’s first burst of color

Spring and yellow blooms go together like cotton goes with Georgia. The story starts with a place with the odd name of The Chelsea Physic Garden with the word ‘Physic’ referring to the science of healing. This garden’s seed exchange program is famous for the introduction of cotton into the American colony of Georgia. But it was one of the gardeners from the Chelsea Physic Garden, William Forsyth, who is best remembered today by having a genus of flowering plants, Forsythia, is named in his honor. It’s the surest sign that spring has indeed arrived, when the Forsythia blooms with bell shaped golden yellow blossoms from ground to tip of the cascading branches. This is a very fast growing shrub that can grow up to two feet a year until it reaches a final height of about ten feet tall. The Forsythia is hardy in USDA zones 4-9. While most common varieties will grow up to ten feet tall you can find dwarf forsythia that will remain a compact one-foot tall plant. This usually large shrub is best planted alone in the yard away form the house as a specimen or used as a fast

growing tall hedge. The branches are easily forced into bloom in late winter. Choose branches that are near the top of the plant. The larger the flower buds, the more quickly the branches will bloom indoors. Cut off an entire branch, all the way back to the stem. Trim off any buds or shoots that will be under water as they will only rot. Cut the branches at slant and place them in cold water in a cool room for two days. Cut the branches again at an angle, and put them in to warm fresh water. Set them in a bright room or sunny window, and soon you will have forsythia blooms. I you leave the branches in fresh water for several more weeks the branches may even root. For best results, plant forsythia in full sun. Indeed it seems that the more sun you give forsythia, the better it blooms. While it can grow in almost any soil, you should avoid places where the water collects to keep it form getting waterlogged. While generally carefree you can feed it with a few

shovel-fulls of compost in early spring. Don’t over fertilize or you will end up with lots of leaves and branches and few flowers. You can add peat moss or compost to planting hole but even this isn’t necessary. Like many fast growing shrubs, Forsythia is easily propagated from softwood cuttings, best taken in late spring or early summer. Just put the cuttings directly into the soil and keep them well watered and they will root with ease. You can speed the process by dipping the cuttings into a rooting hormone powder before planting. A more foolproof method is to bend over a growing branch and cover it with soil. It will quickly root and you can then cut it roots and all form the parent plant. Since Forsythia flowers form on last year’s wood, you should prune them immediately after the flowers have faded. Try to cut back about one fourth of the oldest stems down to within 4 inches of the ground. If your forsythia is just too big and overgrown you can even cut the entire plant down to the ground. This may shock the plant to where it won’t bloom for a few years but once it comes back the plant should be rejuvenated and bloom better than ever. Thanks to the garden that gave cotton to Georgia.

Protect wood furniture (NAPSI)-Moisture and the sun’s ultraviolet rays can take their toll on the wood furniture used on decks and porches and in sunrooms, so it’s important to protect and maintain the finish. Indoor and outdoor furniture made from “dense woods” like teak, mahogany and rosewood will benefit from the penetrating qualities of teak oil, such as new Minwax® Teak Oil. Designed to penetrate into the wood’s pores, teak oil protects furniture from the damaging effects of moisture and sunlight while imparting a beautiful richness to the wood. Follow these tips: • Apply teak oil to new furniture or to existing furniture that appears dry or worn; • Apply with a clean cloth or brush, wiping off excess in the direction of the grain; • Reapply whenever the wood appears to be dry or worn out to restore the effectiveness of the finish.

Get rid of hidden dirt and allergens It’s time to give your home a proper spring cleaning, but it’s far too easy to miss hidden dirt -- germs, allergens and dust mites that lurk in hard-to-reach spaces and places we often forget to dust or vacuum. To keep a healthy home, you need to make a proper plan of where you want to clean and have the right tools at hand. From sponges and mops to the right vacuum cleaner, arming yourself properly can help eliminate your home’s hidden health hazards while making spring cleaning easier on your body. “When it comes to ridding your home’s surfaces of dirt and allergens it’s all about being thorough and making sure you don’t forget to vacuum bedding, upholstery and window treatments.” says Gino Iacovella, National Marketing Manager for Vacuums, Panasonic Consumer Electronics Company. Here are some useful tips from Iacovella and the experts at Panasonic, for effectively and more easily cleaning your home: • Don’t skip surfaces. Most people vacuum or wash their floors, but skip other surfaces where dust can accumulate. If your vacuum loses suction midway through its run, dirt and harmful allergens and dust mites can escape right back into your home. For instance, Panasonic’s Performance Plus Platinum Line of OptiFlow canister vacuums uses new technology to extend the life of the vacuums’ bags

Call Janice MacDonald or Tammy Purcell now at 315-638-0233 to start the application process

by creating better suction as the bag fills up. Wash bed linens, afghans and sofa pillow cases in 130 degree hot water to kill allergens and dust mites. If you or family members suffer from allergies, use a vacuum with a HEPA filter or a HEPA filtration telescoping wand. These filters trap irritating particles so they don’t circulate back into your home’s air and in this w a y keep your home’s allergens to a minimum. I t ’s e a s y to overlook common household mold in humid areas, such as your bathrooms or kitchen. Use a cleaning solution that contains low levels of bleach to kill mold on non-porous, hard surfaces. . Having the right-sized cleaning implements like brushes and mops

Be sure to follow all usage directions and precautions on household cleaning products a n d in your vacuum’s instructions. “ T h o r oughly cleaning your home isn’t just about making it look good. You and your lawn can be green Here’s some ways to keep your lawn and garden healthy while still conserving water

Amid a burgeoning water crisis there’s much individuals can do to conserve this precious resource, starting with their own yards and gardens. Landscape and horticulture expert Steve Jacobs, President of San Diego-based Nature Designs (www.naturedesigns.net), offers these key considerations to help homeowners nationwide conserve water while still keeping their lawns and gardens in tip-top shape: •

Irrigation control. Overwatering due to poor irrigation system management is a major culprit of water waste, and offers the largest potential for conservation. A minimum of each quarter as the seasons change, homeowners should reprogram their irrigation controller to optimize water run time and frequency schedule to avoid watering too much or too little. They can also hire a certified water manager (CWM) to audit the landscape and expertly program the irrigation timer Know your soil. The type of soil you have and the type of irrigation system you use will help determine how often and how long you should water. Depending on your location, you may have clay, sand, silt, loam or a combination of these. Heavy soils such as clay have very tiny pore spaces and take in water very slowly so water runoff is more likely. Sandy soils have large pore spaces which allow water to penetrat quickly but don’t retain water, so you may need to water more often Assess the terrain. The steeper the terrain, the greater th potential for water runoff. To avoid runoff, have an irrigation system with a low precipitation rate and/or to set short run times Get zoned. Ensure your irrigation system is property “zoned” base on exposure to sunlight, wind and other elements. For example, you would not want to water sunny and shady zones at the same time, for the same frequency

and length of time, because the water needs greatly differ in these two areas Got mulch? Adding a 2 inch layer of groundcover mulch to planter beds is a good way to conserve water. Doing this will lower the temperature of the soil and dramatically reduce evaporation. You will also get the added benefits of weed control, erosion control and adding organic matter to the soil. Age matters. Those homes with mature plants and trees, which have a fully developed root system, can be watered less frequently and in some instances only a few times a year or not at all. So, as your landscaping ages, your watering schedule should be decreasing in kind. Understand water needs. Know what’s planted in your yard, and if your flowers, plants and trees require high, moderate or low water so that you can set your irrigation system accordingly. Try to plant items together in zones with similar watering needs rather than mixing and matching high and low water use plants in the same area Find and fix problems. Each month check, or have your landscape maintenance company check, the condition of your irrigation system throughout the property so that problems such as leaks, overspray, broken heads and/or pipes, incorrect water pressure, etc. may be rectified Become drought tolerant. If your current landscape requires a lot of water, consider changing the plantings to Mediterranean and native plants. This will allow you to water less often and still have a beautiful garden. Log on. There are many online resources to help homeowners conserve. For example, the United States Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service offers a “Backyard Conservation Tip Sheet” located at nrcs.usda.gov/feature/backyard/ watercon.html.

Little York Plantation Creating Beautiful Gardens for 36 Years Operating a small seasonal business in today’s economy requires a blend of personal and professional attributes to remain solvent. Dick and Jackie Crane at Little York Plantation and their staff have faithfully educated the community on the subject of plants for 36 years. The large retail facility specializes in unique varieties of perennials, annuals, trees, and shrubs, along with complete landscaping services. Stop in this Saturday from 9 to 5, when the plantation staff will host their ‘Spring Fling Open House’; a celebration of their many years of service. It all began in 1972, when the Crane’s bought Gladtime Farm Market, a small fruit and vegetable stand. Dick Crane was a Biology teacher at Homer High School. Jackie was a stay at home mom with her two small children, Beatrice and Bill. Dick’s background and knowledge of plants was the foundation of the business and to this day, he is responsible for most of the plant material. Jackie, an interior design major, established the business as a “woman owned business” and applied her design knowledge to the gift shop, plants and landscaping. Operating a business based on their combined knowledge was the core of the operation and a key element to the current day success. The business started by growing vegetables and baking bread to sell at the farm stand. The true story is that they didn’t set out to run a garden center and landscape business. It all happened by accident. They purchased some hanging baskets to dress up the farm stand. As Jackie tells it, “we sold all of the plants by noon”. After that happened 7 days in a row, they realized the potential for an expansion. Little York Plantation is open 7 days a week from April through October. The business has grown and developed

into a full service garden center, growing nursery and landscaping company employing 17 - 25 seasonal full time and part time employees. The Plantation occupies 6 acres of gardening and landscape supplies with 13 greenhouses on the ever-blooming property. The 1900’s barn is over 3,000 sq feet of retail space filled with an array of wonderful home décor and gift items, unique garden accessories and quality patio furniture. There are 1000’s of varieties of annuals, perennials, shrubs, trees, all displayed among the mature landscaped plants perfectly situated around the farmhouse, the barn and the greenhouses. Walking the plantation for ideas on what, where and how to plant is a lesson in itself and it’s also a lot of fun. Many customers visit on a regular basis to enjoy the beautiful surroundings and see the changes throughout the growing season What sets Little York Plantation Landscaping apart from other landscaping businesses is the access to the plants and the plant knowledge. Another key is the design element of a project and this is where Jackie’s know-how and creativity truly shine. The landscaping team places great value on the design element of a project whether big or small. From the early beginnings, Little York Plantation has developed into one of the finest operations of its kind in Central New York. Come join us at Little York Plantation in celebrated 36 years of gardening, landscaping and nature. Bringing the indoors...out!

Outdoor living has been redefined, Hunter Springs on cutting edge In his “Ode to the West Wind,” British poet Percy Bysshe Shelley famously asked, “If Winter comes, can Spring be far behind?” That’s a question often asked this time of year by Central New Yorkers who look forward to war mer weather, when lawns and gardens can be tended to and entertaining can move outdoors. And given today’s economic uncertainties, staying close to home to enjoy friends and family can be a practical alternative

to more traditional vacations. Two local businessmen have combined their creative talents and years of experience to help homeowners create warm, inviting backyard escapes and outdoor rooms. “Adding an outdoor living space was the biggest garden trend last year,” said Scott Schaal, president and head designer for Hunter Springs Landscape Company. “Outdoor living has been redefined. The range of products and accessories available to

bring the comforts inside the home outside is amazing!” • -Built-in gas cooking surfaces, sinks, light fixtures and fans, even refrigerators and ice chests can be part of a d e s i g n p a ck a g e t h at provides functional work space while at the same time enhancing the beauty of a home and backyard. • “The key to a successful outdoor living space is to focus on the funda-

mentals that you enjoy and develop those elements into the design. We incorporate natural and manufactured stone products, the ‘hardscape.’ to build the patios, walls and steps that help define the space. We a l s o i n c o r p o r at e ‘softscaping,’ the trees shrubs and perennials that create living borders, provide privacy and reduce noise from the surrounding area. Clients can focus on enter taining or simply add a quiet space where they are free to meditate, luxuriate.” Hand-crafted outdoor structures are another

key element to defining an outdoor room. Rick Lesser brings more t h at 3 0 ye a r s e x p e r i ence as a residential general contractor to the partnership. "Scott and I worked together on several projects last year that tur ned out beautifully and were just plain fun to build. The clients were great, the designs challenging, and at the end of the day we all agreed that outdoor rooms are a great concept." Drawing materials from local mills, Lesser and his crew built walls, pergolas and trellises from hemlock, cedar

We w a n t t o c o m p l iment the design of the h o u s e, n o t c o m p e t e with it." More exotic materials are also available. A local architect challenged the crew with a request for a second story deck overlooking Snooks Pond in M a n l i u s, bu i l t w i t h ipe, a Brazilian hardwood that resembles mahogany. “We burned through dozens of drill bits on that one, but the finished deck is a thing of unique beauty.â€?

Manlius couple transform their space

Pete and Cindy Taylor of Manlius were looking for a way to expand the functional space of their home last year and made the connection with Hunter Springs through

a mutual friend. “ We we re i nv i t e d t o a friends’ house for a party and got to see their new patio, which we loved. We met Scott at the party and the rest is pretty much history. We came up with a plan that is very different from the runof-the-mill patio/entertainment area. There is nothing about it we don’t like: it’s attractive, functional and more unique that any we have ever seen.â€? C i n dy ’s p a re n t s ow n e d a home on Martha’s Vineyard years ago and one of the standout features of the property were the stone retaining walls. With Scott’s help, Cindy incor porated similar walls into the backyard design as a “keepsake memory of days past.â€? A 12’ x 16’ pergola was erected just a few feet away from the house on the second level of the patio. A gas cooktop was built into a stone countertop, electrical outlets and soft lighting were incorporated into the framework and steps, and a family heirloom, a weath-

ered wisteria tree from Pete’s mother’s home, was planted so that it can climb the trellis and roof structure of the pergola. “Everything really looks fantastic and is very f u n c t i o n a l fo r e n t e r t a i n ing, says Pete. “It’s a perfect place for a three piece band, too.

Invest in your home

Do the Taylors feel the i nve s t m e n t c o m p l i m e n t s their home and lifestyle? Definitely! “Landscaping is one of the best investments you can make for your home,â€? said Schaal. According to Money Magazine (Feb. 2000): “A nicely l a n d s c ap e d p ro p e r t y c a n increase the value of  your home by 17 percent, allow-

ing owners to recoup 100 to 200 percent of their investment at selling time. This compares favorably with the investment recovery rates for kitchen remodeling (75125 percent), bathroom remodeling (20-120 percent), and swimming pool additions (20-50 percent).â€? And an outdoor room is an investment that keeps on giving. Instead of spending thousands of dollars on a one-time vacation away from home, owners can choose to put that money into a backyard escape that they can enjoy year after year. So, while Shelley’s “unawakened earthâ€? sleeps, it’s not too early to start thinking about adding an extra room to your home‌outdoors, of course!

“A nicely landscaped property can increase the value of your home by 17 percent, allowing owners to recoup 100 to 200 percent of their investment at selling time.

Seneca Federal approved by NYSERDA as lender

Spring Spruce Up Arrow Fence: Our Mission

Seneca Federal recently unveiled its new logo. Pictured are employees from their branches in Baldwinsville, Liverpool and North Syracuse. Seneca Federal Savings and Loan Association announced it has been approved by New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) as a participating lender. Christopher Demong, president of Seneca Federal, said, “This is an important way we can help consumers in Central New York reduce their energy costs.” He further explained that the New York Energy Smart Loan Fund is designed to encourage eligible borrowers to take advantage of available products, technologies and other measures that reduce energy use in both existing and new 1 to 4 unit homes, apartments and commercial buildings. Mr. Demong further explained, “Seneca Federal can offer NYSERDA approved borrowers interest rate reductions of up to 4 percent on loans for homeowners and others who make eligible improvements or purchase eligible energy star appliances. “A typical home improvement loan rate of 6.50 percent, for example, could be reduced to 2.50 percent.” He said the application process is not that difficult. “The customer fills out our typical loan application as well as the required application for NYSERDA,” the bank president said. He also said loans and even grants are available for wind turbines and photovoltaic panels. “Nyserda.org is the best source of information for details of these programs,” said Demong. “As the cost of energy increases it becomes more important for homeowners to take small measures, such as additional insulation, as well as looking into alternative energy sources. New York State has partnered with eligible financial institutions, such as Seneca Federal, to help reduce the cost burden and assist consumers in determining payback periods based on particular homeowners’ time horizons,” he added.

‘Love Where You Live’ Timber Banks hosts Golf and Home Show May 14 to 17 By Erin Smith esmith@cnylink.com After years of planning, design and construction, Gary Pooler’s vision for a residential golf and marina community is now open. That vision is Timber Banks, an 885-acre development featuring an 18-hole Jack Nicklaus design golf course and marina located on the Cold Springs Peninsula in Lysander. Designed with a mix of residential properties including apartments, townhouses, single family residences and estate homes located on and around the golf course, Timber Banks will also feature 1,100 feet of trails along the river and sidewalks throughout the development. Timber Banks has also devoted more than half of the total property to open space. With numerous model homes ready for viewing, Pooler Enterprises and Pooler Development will host the Timber Banks “Love Where You Live” Golf and Home

Show, which will enable guests to check out the multi-use living community. “We intend to draw 2,000 to 3,000 homebuyers and golfers from across Central New York to this free event,” said Gary Pooler of Pooler Enterprises. The four-day event, held from Thursday May 14 through Sunday May 17, will not only showcase the model homes, but will also feature the grand opening of the Nicklaus design golf course. The public will get a sneak peek at the first nine holes Saturday May 16, when Timber Banks Golf Course and Marina will also conduct a hole-in-one shootout from noon to 2 p.m. at the course. Open to amateurs only, the hole-in-one contest will allow players one free shot on the 13th hole. Additional tries will cost $20 with proceeds benefiting the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Central New York. Participants will also be eligible for a $20,000 hole-in-one opportunity and a season membership for the shot that comes closest to the pin. In addition to Make-A-Wish, Coaches vs. Cancer and McMahon Ryan Child Advocacy will both benefit from the 50/50 cash raffle and merchandise raffles, which,

among other items, features autographed memorabilia from Jack Nicklaus. Tours of the course, which is expected to open next spring, will also be provided during Saturday’s event. Celebrity guests include Head Syracuse Basketball Coach Jim Boeheim, his wife Juli, and WSYR’s Jim Reith.

The vision

The Timber Banks main entranceway off of River Road features a guard shack which is designed to give residents a sense of exclusivity. Timber Banks willwill also feature a marina along the Seneca River and a village center complete with small shops and service industries. “We are trying to create more of a village or town center with a village core that radiates out to less density,” said Bill Price, president of Pooler Development. Price described a work/live unit at the “town center,” which would feature retail or office space on the first floor with residential living on the second and third floors. The type of businesses Price said could occupy the spaces include delis, bakeries, gyms, hair salons and coffee shops.

Indoor pollution should be as much a concern as outdoor agents ( NA P S I ) - M a ny h o m e owners might be surprised to learn that air pollution can be as much an indoor concern as it is an outdoor problem. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) includes indoor air pollution among the top five environmental health risks facing Americans today. The cause? Particulate matter, including dust, smoke, pollen, animal dander, to-

bacco smoke, particles generated by combustion and particles associated with dust mites, mold, bacteria and viruses, as well as gaseous pollutants that come from the combustion process, building materials, furnishings and products such as adhesives, paints, varnishes, cleaning products and pesticides. The problem these pollutants pose can be heightened by construction and remod-

the removal of indoor air pollutants from the home. According to the EPA, the best way to address indoor air pollution is to control or eliminate the sources of the pollutants, ventilate a home with clean outdoor

Phoenix Flower Farm ‘A family hobby that got out of hand’ Phoenix Flower Farm is open for the season, featuring a large selection of nursery-grown native plants, and many other hardy perennial plants. “We’ll be open every day during May and June,” says owner Helen Schueler, now in her 26th year of business in northern Onondaga County. “You might say this is a family hobby that got out of hand”, Helen says. “Our family was always interested in nature, and gardened together, so it was natural for my husband John and me to start a retirement business, specializing in daylilies, which were not widely grown in Central New York in 1986.” The Schuelers are a little surprised that their nursery has grown to over two acres of landscaped gardens—which display their stock plants in appropriate conditions to aid customers’ selection—and over 5000 species and varieties suitable to Central New York . The daylily collection has grown to hundreds of varieties, but is out numbered by the species and cultivars of irises, Helen’s personal passion, and intermixed with large collections of peonies, hostas, and ornamental grasses. The Schuelers’ sons established a landscaping business, PFF Landscaping, in the early ‘90’s and developed more gardens and added numerous trees and shrubs to the plantings. Some of the more unusual specimens include Heptacodium (Seven Son Flower), Taxodium (Bald Cypress) and Cladrastus kentuckia (American Yellow Wood). Today, Delos Schueler continues to operate the landscaping business and uses the farm to showcase his designs and techniques. Phoenix Flower Farm has developed into a destination for garden clubs and Seniors groups, for which the Schuelers will make special arrangements and directed garden tours with prior arrangement. “PFF has more the flavor of a public garden these days,” Helen says, “and we encourage all our visitors and customers to wander and take their time. Visitors are always welcome during our business hours. We especially encourage new gardeners to take their time, to ask questions,

“Our fairweather season is short enough as it is, so use all of it to improve and enjoy your garden.”

and visit in various seasons before making large decisions.” Plants ready for sale are displayed in the sales area and are potted in one-quart to 2 gallon containers—and larger as needed. Plants prepared and maintained in this way can be

safely planted from April until October, with few exceptions, so gardeners don’t have to do all their planting in May. “Our fairweather season is short enough as it is, so use all of it to improve and enjoy your garden,” is the Schueler family motto.
