Students walk for well-being at MRE Fundraiser offers healthier option for elementary kids By Miranda L. Pennock mpennock@cnylink.com On Thursday, 475 children participated in an event to make their school a better place to be and their lives a little healthier. Students in kindergarten through sixth grade at Morgan Road Elementary in Liverpool took part in a walk-a-thon at the Liverpool High School stadium throughout the day Oct. 8. The event was to help the MRE Parent Teacher Organization raise money that will go toward field trips, school activities and school and class supplies among other items, said MRE PTO President Mary Jo Klein. “We want all the money raised to stay at Morgan Road Elementary,” she said. Klein added the PTO wanted a healthy way for the funds to be raised. Rather than a candy sale or another unhealthy alternative to raising money, the PTO opted to utilize the track during first year of the new stadium being open. During their timeslot, many of the fourth-grad-

Clay proposes tax increase in 2011 budget Supervisor cites salaries, insurance as major factors By Miranda L. Pennock mpennock@cnylink.com Residents in the town of Clay may see a tax increase of 13.71 percent in 2011 if officials aren’t able to trim down the tentative budget presented to the town board Monday Oct. 4. According to Clay Supervisor Damian Ulatowski, the tentative budget total is $13,419,186, an increase of $704,159, or 5.5 percent, from the 2010 budget. The 2010 budget total was $12,715,027. Major increases are due to salaries ($250,919 — 3 percent per year for 2010 and 2011), retirement contribution ($111,310 — a 40 percent increase from 2010) and health insurance ($265,063). “Theses are costs that have come down to us from the state level,” Ulatowski said. For non-represented employees, health insurance coverage was modified for a savings of

$41,000 this year. Health insurance for retirees was also modified, which caused a savings of $141,000, he said. “The level of coverage is substantially the same as before,” Ulatowski said. “We want to revise the health coverage for represented employees but both bargaining agreements are currently under negotiation so we have to maintain the current coverage until agreements are reached.” The town will see a savings where employees are concerned — each department’s mileage, training and conference appropriation has been scaled back and for the third year in a row, there is no salary increase for elected officials. According to Ulatowski, there also are no new employees. “Two employees took early retirement incentive in 2010 and their positions are not being filled,” Ulatowski said. There was an early retirement in the highway department and that position was filled, but at a lower wage. With a proposed tax increase of 13.71 percent, the tax rate per $1,000 of assessed value would increase by $7.68, from 49.62 to $57.31. Please see Budget, page 7

Salina taxes may inch upward in 2011 By Matthew Liptak Contributor The town of Salina will hold a public hearing concerning its proposed 2011 budget on Oct. 25 at 6:31 p.m. at Salina Town Hall. The new tentative budget is 2 percent larger than last year and includes a 1.6 percent tax increase. The 2011 proposed budget is $9,656,830, while the 2010 budget was $9,463,399, according to the town supervisor’s office. “The budget clearly reflects the fact that the town is faced with a significant increase in expenses, workers compensation, medical insurance, pensions, salaries and revenue losses that total nearly $400,000 which we simply have no control over,” said Town Supervisor Mark Nicotra at a budget presentation Oct. 5. He earned a master’s of music at yale, where he attended on full scholarship. He is now working on a doctorate of music at Florida State University. Johnson, who has performed throughout the United States, is building a solid reputation as one of today’s premiere classical guitarists. He has studied with the renowned teachers Benjamin Verdery, Dr. Stephen Robinson and Bruce Holzman. He studied with Andres Segovia’s protégé, Oscar Ghiglia, at the Accademia Musicale Chi-

Johnson’s Liverpool recital is part of the third season of Joyful Noise: Concert Series for the Community. Welsch said a group of music lovers launched the series in order to provide a venue for talented local artists to perform for appreciative audiences. “I am certain our audience will enjoy hearing this up and coming young performer,” Welsch said. “It is a great opportunity for us to have Mr. Johnson appear in the series while he is in the area.” For information about the recital, call 457-5180.

Your community, your news, your website This week, Eagle Newspapers is launching a new and improved network of websites, with one especially tailored for your community. The Star-Review has a new home at eaglestarreview.com. Eagle has created a website for each of its seven local publications. “By creating separate sites for each of our newspapers, rather than one large site which aggregates the content from all of our products, we have refocused the attention on the individual communities we serve,” said Publisher David Tyler. “We’re making it easier for our web users to find news and content that is local and useful to them.” At our new websites, you will find breaking news stories throughout the week, as well as school and business news and upcoming events. Stories, letters to the editor, obituaries and more can be submitted with our online forms. “The new website will allow us to update our readers on all the local news that is important to the communities we cover,” said Managing Editor Jennifer Wing. “The new, user-friendly format will make it even easier for readers to read all the news about sports, schools, businesses, people and organizations in their neighborhoods.” Reading something online doesn’t offer the same tactile feeling as sitting down with a newspaper, and we don’t think that will change. But our websites offer a new way for you to interact with your community paper, and to stay up-to-date with the latest news. Want to keep up with communities across Central New york? Visit any of our other six websites: baldwinsvillemessenger.com, cazenoviarepublican. com, eaglebulletin.com, eagle-observer.com, skaneatelespress.com and theeaglecny.com. We’ll be seeing you soon!

A familiar name pops up in J-E school fiasco A familiar name surfaced in the JordanElbridge School District fiasco. Dennis O’Hara, the lawyer representing three disciplined school administrators there, is the same attorney who was unceremoniously dismissed by the Liverpool school board in November 2008 in the aftermath of a critical state Comptroller’s audit of the Liverpool district. O’Hara’s now representing David Zehner, William Hamilton and Anthony Scro. Scro, the district treasurer, was fired Sept. 9. Zehner was suspended with pay as principal at Jordan-Elbridge High School on Sept. 21. Hamilton, assistant superintendent for business and finance, was put on paid administrative leave in July after he questioned the billing practices of district lawyer Danny Mevec. Meanwhile, school board members confirmed that Mevec was romantically involved with J-E school board member Jeanne Pieklik. But here’s another incestuous innuendo – Mevec previously worked for Denny O’Hara’s own law firm! Small world, eh? O’Hara, who specializes in education law

and finance, maintained that the actions against his three J-E clients were not approved at public school board meetings. While their world crumbles around them, the J-E school board finally found the gumption to dismiss Danny Mevec as its attorney on Oct. 6. Before O’Hara was let go in Liverpool two years ago, his O’Hara, O’Connell & Ciotoli law firm had charged LCSD $1,452,400 in fees from 2004-06. That was about $1 million more than what North Syracuse paid the partners during the same time frame. My, how quickly those billable hours add up! J-E found out the hard way… Puerile posts bite Price Sheriff ’s candidate Joe Price, a Democrat, learned the high price of posting puerile opinions on a public Internet forum. He’s now a man without a party. The Post-Standard, the institution which runs the cyber-soap box, made a fool of Price with its frontpage exposé on Sept. 24. That afternoon the county Democratic Committee

promptly disowned Price because of his racist and homophobic computer comments. Democratic Chairwoman Diane Dwire announced that her party was pulling all support – financial and otherwise – from the Price campaign. His name will still appear on the Democratic line on the Nov. 3 ballot. Looks like a cakewalk for incumbent Sheriff Kevin Walsh, a Republican. Five decades of fun! Syracuse bandleader Mickey Vendetti is preparing to mark his golden anniversary in the music biz on. Saturday Oct. 23 at Le Moyne Manor, 629 Old Liverpool Road. The celebration of rock’n’roll through the decades begins at 7 p.m. with an opening performance by TimeLine. Tickets cost $10 and are available at Gilligan’s Pub, 3601 James St. in Eastwood, or call Mickey directly at 345-1002. But you can hear Mickey sing a few tunes today, on Liverpool Public Library’s “Local Artist Spotlight” program, which

streams online daily at 1 and 7 p.m. On the show, I interview Mick about his five decades as an area entertainer, and we play tracks from his two recent discs, “The Best of the Goodtime Band Live” and “Sentimental Journey.” A veteran keyboardist and singer, Vendetti estimates that over the years he has played more than 4,000 wedding receptions and private parties. To listen, visit lpl.org and click on Radio LPL. Rockin’ for Camp Goodwill Four rockin’ bands will perform a benefit for Camp Goodwill from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday Oct. 16 at The Castaways in Brewerton. High Esteem’s Camp Goodwill is a Chittenango-based camp for disabled kids, and it’s the home of Creepy Camp every Halloween season. The quadruple bill features Smokin’ with Galeville keyboardist Bobby Lindberg, the Fab 570 with local Beatles’ fanatic Paul Davie on bass and host band The Coachmen featuring Liverpool’s own John Salatamach on trumpet and vocals. Almost lost in September’s school opening activities was the good news relative to both Smith Road Elementary School and North Syracuse Junior High School. Both schools made Annual yearly Progress (AyP)! This was Smith Road’s second year in achieving this goal, and consequently, the school is no longer considered a school in need of improvement

by the State Education Department. This was the junior high school’s first year making Safe Harbor. One more year and the school is off the state list. As you recall, students in both schools had performed well on the state ELA assessment, but the scores of students with disabilities were not high

enough to reach the state standard in English language arts. This accomplishment occurred as the result of hard work of the students and staff at the two buildings. There was an increased emphasis on staff development and additional academic assistance for students at the two schools.

Both schools developed Comprehensive Education Plans that assisted them during the course of the school year. Let me assure you that their respective success was not accidental; it was earned. I know you join me in commending our students and staff at Smith Road Elementary School and North Syracuse Junior High School for their accomplishments.

Elementary classes growing, but capped The development of the 2010-11 Liverpool Central School District budget was a painstaking process. Last winter, it seemed like every time we thought we had a fix on the economic picture for the ensuing year, someone was dipping yet more money from our revenue streams. In the end, we had to eliminate $11.1 million in costs (130 employee positions) in order to balance our budget. District-wide we had to cut 48.5 teachers to “bring in” the budget (which was smaller than the previous year’s budget and resulted

in only a 1.77 percent tax increase). A very important goal for the board and me in the midst of all this cost cutting, was to not raise our elementary class-size maximums. These caps are set at no more than 22 students in kindergarten through second grade classrooms and 25 students in third through sixth grade. This would not be an easy task since some shrinkage of elementary sections had to happen. In order to

squeeze more students into fewer classrooms without raising the classroom cap we would have to move the class average closer to the class maximum. This means we would have to populate more sections right up to the cap and decrease the number of small-enrollment classes throughout the district. In order to bring the budget into line, we shrank down from 183 elementary classrooms

last year to 177 elementary sections this year. The closure of one of our elementary schools helped facilitate this shrinkage. While the district’s kindergarten through sixth grade enrollment went down 47 students (from 3,936 students in 2009-10 to 3,889 this year), we eliminated a disproportionate number of elementary classrooms (six). The average class size in a Liverpool elementary school went from 21.5 stuPlease see Classes, page 5

department pay between 8 and 15 percent. The town is obligated to pay over $250,000 for 16 members of the Teamsters in 2011. Their health care plan also covers visions services, for which there is no limit. Would you not like to purchase a $700 pair of glasses and have your employer cover the entire cost? The Teamster employees are not at fault for contents of the contract. The fault lies with the town’s former leadership and the attorney who negotiated the contract. I wonder if there was a conflict of interest when then Town Supervisor Chet Dudzinski, a retired member of the Teamsters, helped negotiate such a generous contract since he is a former Teamster? The contract is available on the town’s website, ciceronewyork.net. Public employees should not be feeding at the government trough

purposefully had one section below maximum and the other section above the maximum.) Last year with the benefit of extra sections, some fortunate students were able to enjoy relatively small class sizes. In 200910 we had 42 elementary classes (23 percent of all kindergarten through sixth grade classrooms) with 19 or fewer children in them. This year that number is down to 25 elementary sections (14.1 percent) with 19 or fewer children in them. There is no escaping the fact that smaller class size translates into more individualized attention for each student within them. While we have had to eliminate many smallersized elementary classrooms, we have been able to keep our class caps at a very manageable level. The district’s average class size is moving closer and closer to the maximum load levels. Of course, at some point, we will run out of “empty seats in uncapped classrooms. If budget constraints demand fuller classrooms, we might have to do what no one wants to do: move classsize caps up. Let’s hope that, into the future, revenue streams to public schools will perk back up and we do not have to consider the educational impact of raising class size caps.

dents per class in 2009-10 to 22 students per class in 2010-11. Filling classrooms up to their brink would, of course, mean that more classrooms would have to be capped and new arrivals to that building would be transported to another school that had the capacity to accept additional students in a particular grade level. Today we have 51 capped kindergarten through sixth grade classrooms in our nine elementary buildings (28.8 percent of all kindergarten through sixth grade classrooms are capped). This figure is up from last year’s (comparable time) figures of 29 capped classrooms (15.8 percent). We always have unique circumstances that result in some overloading of classrooms (i.e. exceeding classroom caps). The most typical example happens when a family with multiple children moves into the district and the neighborhood school can accommodate all of the children save one. In these instances we sometimes overload a section rather than transport a child away from his or her siblings. This year we have nine overloaded classrooms (5.1 percent) across the district. We had seven overloaded classrooms (3.8 percent) last year. (Note: This year we have three additional paired sections that we

To the editor: I attended the preliminary budget workshop Oct. 6. This budget reflects about a 20 percent increase in spending from last year. In order to lower the budget to a 10 percent increase, more than $800,000 needs to be cut. The town board members had a spirited discussion concerning this budget because many of the problems originated with spending practices of the previous administration and severe over-estimation of revenue for 2010. To my dismay, the board reached no consensus on how or where cuts should be made. Also, I heard no plan as to how to tackle this issue. Particularly problematic is the Teamsters contract that was passed in 2009, with an eective date of Jan. 1, 2010. The Teamsters who are town employees will realize

an average of a 4 percent raise per year for four years. Can the town aord to give such generous raises in this economy, particularly when revenues to the town are down? Of course, the rest of the town employees might expect the same raise; the tentative budget reflected a 4 percent increase for all nonunion employees. The preliminary budget presented on Oct. 6 reflected a 3 percent raise for the nonunion employees, which includes all the department heads and elected officials. A raise on the backs of taxpayers who may not have had a pay raise in two or three years, or have had to take pay cuts, is unconscionable. The raises are just one issue. The Teamsters’ health care plan should become a major issue for the town. The Teamsters are the only group that does not contribute to its health care. Non-union employees pay 8 percent, CSEA pays 12 percent and members of the police

Schools Businessman donates $3K to C-NS With a $3,000 donation from Paul Ross, local entrepreneur and owner of several McDonald’s franchises, the C-NS business department opened a Center for Entrepreneurship. The center is open to all students interested in exploring entrepreneurship, starting a business, or ex-

panding a current business. Ross’ generous donation provided the center with two computers, signage, business journals, a color printer and other supplies to help students research business ideas and create marketing materials. The Center is open during lunches and after school

where business teachers are available to provide consulting services. The center is currently working with students interested starting and/or expanding businesses such as a barbershop, tie-dye T-shirt company, a DJ service and custom designed handbags.

A portion of the grant was also used to award a Paul Ross Fellowship to the Syracuse University Entrepreneurship Boot Camp. Daniel Ciciarelli was awarded the fellowship and is attending the boot camp, which runs for six consecutive Saturdays.

Harvest Jam features country, rock

“Fortunately, keeping a tight rein on spending over the past three years has resulted in the town keeping a very healthy fund balance,” Nicotra continued. “Good planning and fiscal responsibility have once again allowed us to use a portion of the fund balance to offset the town’s contractual obligations and cost increases that are beyond our control.” Increases included a 41 percent increase in workers compensation insurance equaling $92,250; a 17 percent increase in pension costs equaling $61,503; an increase in Teamster health insurance of 9.5 percent or $65,748; and an increase in Service Employee International Union health insurance of 5 percent or $16,362. Total projected costs for these budget items are workers compensation insurance, $317,250; pension costs, $374,868; Teamsters health insurance, $683,789; and Service Employee International Union health insurance, $338,211. A homeowner in the town with a home assessed at $100,000 would expect to pay an additional $6.10 a year in property taxes over last year under the proposed budget. A homeowner in the village of Liverpool with a home assessed at $100,000 would expect to pay an additional $1.90 a year in property taxes over last year under the proposed budget. “This budget, of course, is a work in progress and I stand ready to work with the town board with [an] eye toward reducing the tax burden on the tax payers of Salina,” Nicotra said. Copies of the proposed budget are being made available at the town clerks office, via e-mail, and will also be posted on the town’s website at salina.ny.us.

For residents in the village of North Syracuse, the tax rate would increase by $4.02 per $1,000 of assessed value. According to Ulatowski, the preliminary county budget, as presented to the Legislature, will have a severe impact on town taxpayers as the county tax on an average home would increase by $450. “This is due to the redistribution of sales tax which was credited to the town before the county’s levy was apportioned,” Ulatowski said. “This is an unfortunate blow to the taxpayers in Clay, but we are still one of the most affordable towns in Onondaga County.” Out of 19 towns, Clay’s tax charge per $100,000 home of $603 is the fourth least expensive behind only Fabius, Elbridge and Salina. “There are some things that are out of our control,” Ulatowski said. Over the next few weeks, the board will review the budget during a series of workshops.

Clay Fire celebrates safety, prevention

MIRANDA L. PENNOCK PHOTOS

About one in 20 school-aged children is affected by “developmental coordination disorder” (DCD), which is characterized by difficulty with fine and gross motor skills. Those with DCD may have problems performing daily activities including personal care, sports/recreation, and school skills such as handwriting. In the past, DCD has been regarded as something of a secondary disorder that did not wrrant much concern. However, more recently, this attitude has been changing. One finding that has health experts concerned is that a recent study has found that children with DCD are more than three times more likely than typical children to be overweight and at increased risk of obesity. Physical therapy may help children who have been diagnosed with the disorder.

Children and adolescents with DCD should not be confused with those who do not perform motor skills as well as their peers. Rather, children and adolescents with DCD have extreme difficulty acquiring new motor skills. Practice can help them, but it must be structured in specific ways to be effective. If you or a family member needs physical therapy, please call our clinic at 315-476-3176 to schedule an appointment. We are proud to offer highly trained and experienced professionals to serve you. Our office is located at 207 Pine Street in Syracuse. p.s. Experts believe that the poorer coordination associated with “developmental coordination disorder” (DCD) may result in reduced physical activity, which, in turn, brings on unhealthy weight gain.

Relays help Warrior swimmers bash B’ville

By Phil Blackwell pblackwell@cnylink.com

Earning even more neighborhood bragging rights, the Liverpool girls swim team followed up its Oct. 1 conquest of CiceroNorth Syracuse by earning another win over Baldwinsville. In improving to 3-1 with a 107-73 victory over the Bees last Wednesday night, the Warriors dominated both the relays and the diving competition to make up for B’ville taking most of the individual events. A big early moment came in the 200 medley relay. Liverpool’s quartet of Kelly Cole, Madison Hall, Madison Sestak and Ashley Zemotel battled B’ville to the wire and won by the tiniest possible margin. The Warriors finished in 2:01.16, the Bees 2:01.17. It proved a bit more lopsided in the other relays. Sestak, Zemotel, Becky Evangelista and Julia Mondo swam the 200 freestyle in 1:47.54 to beat B’ville by 1.6 seconds, and in the 400 freestyle relay Hall, Evan-

gelista, Antoinette Esce and Renee Stromski won in 3:55.07. Just as important was the fact that Liverpool went 1-2 in diving, as Noelle Killius prevailed with 115.35 points and Jessica Cain (98.1 points) finished second. Evangelista would dominate the 200 individual medley, winning in 2:17.05 as Cole (2:30.03) got second place. More points nearly were attained elsewhere. Esce was second in the 200 freestyle (2:10.60) to B’ville’s Kaitlyn Martin (2:09.99) and also the runner-up in the 100 freestyle. Hall went 27.14 seconds in the 50 freestyle to finish second to Elena Margrey (27.02), with Sestak third. Cole got second in the 100 breaststroke (1:12.79) to Charis Parker’s 1:11.61 and, in the closest race of all, Colleen McCarthy took second in the 100 backstroke in 1:08.01 – a race the Bees’ Samantha Sidokaris won in 1:08 flat. On Friday night at LeMoyne College, Cicero-North Syracuse hosted Fayetteville-Manlius, taking a 95-

85 loss to the Hornets. Prior to Maryann Brown winning the 100 breaststroke in 1:25.52, F-M won every race in the pool. Only Staci DeCarr broke into that trend, earning 207.15 points to take the diving competition. Emily Altier came close in the 200 freestyle, her time of 2:04.99 just behind Katie Pechacek (2:04.78), but she did team with Kim Morris, Stacey Radder and Nisha Sposato to win the 400 freestyle relay in 4:18.54. F-M saw Pechacek (in the 200 and 500 freestyle) and Hadley Cameron-Carter (in the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke) earn double wins. Liverpool would visit Nottingham on Tuesday, the same pool where next month’s Section III championships will take place. CNS goes back to LeMoyne Friday to face West Genesee.

Northstars remain in first place

Still unbeaten within the CNY Counties League, the CiceroNorth Syracuse boys volleyball team kept passing whatever examination got thrown at them. The Northstars went to Central Square last Tuesday night and earned its eighth straight league win, beating the Red Hawks in four games. A close first game saw CNS prevail 25-22, and it used that momentum (plus its power at the net) to dominate the second game 25-14. Central Square avoided a sweep by winning the third game 25-22, and pushed the Northstars in the fourth game, too, before the visitors closed out the match 25-20. Jim Coleman backed up his 29 assists with six kills. Ethan Irish again stood out, earning 16 kills as Tyler A. Smith got eight kills and four assists. Billy Werksman produced six kills and four aces. Liverpool returned to action Thursday night and struggled in a 25-9, 25-14, 25-18 loss to Baldwinsville, the team closest to CNS in the league standings. Aaron Carroll-Marsh finished with five digs and four aces, while Ian Hamm got five digs. Ben Peet added four digs as James Henty picked up two assists, two assists and two digs. Ryan Shelton led B’ville with 28 assists and five aces.

Warriors head to AA playoffs, CNS falls to B’ville By Phil Blackwell pblackwell@cnylink.com Both the Liverpool and Cicero-North Syracuse football teams went into the next-to-last weekend of the regular season still harboring playoff hopes. Only the Warriors would capitalize on those chances, though, going to Nottingham and needing a big fourth quarter to oust the Bulldogs 35-21 and secure its spot in the post-season. As this was going on, the Northstars were at Bragman Stadium, watching undefeated, state no. 3-ranked Baldwinsville put on another gridiron clinic in a 43-20 defeat that dropped CNS to 1-5 on the season. Liverpool went to Nottingham fresh off beating

CNS for the ‘Star Wars’ Cup for the third year in a row, and perhaps the team suffered a letdown, as the early play against the Bulldogs showed. Unable to score in the first quarter, the Warriors watched as Nottingham took a 6-0 lead with a smart scoring drive and quarterback Marty Clanton scrambling six yards for the touchdown. Only in the second period did Liverpool start to stir on offense. On back-to-back drives, the Warriors mixed up runs and passes in an effective manner, both times reaching the end zone as fullback Josh Withrow score on a five-yard run and oneyard plunge. Connor Rogers made both extra points, and Liverpool led 14-6 going

into the break. Still, Nottingham persevered and, in the third period, pulled back even with a drive that led to Clanton going two yards for his second TD of the night. When Clanton threw to Charles Gary in the end zone for two points, they were tied, 14-14, going to the final period. Early in the fourth quarter, the exchange continued. Luigi Barletta threw a 21yard TD pass to Jaheem Hogan, but Liverpool missed the conversion. Nottingham countered with its own drive, Jamar Adams going the final 29 yards for the score and Josh Feldman making the go-ahead extra point. Now trailing 21-20, Liverpool found itself on its own 24-yard line. Barletta decided to throw deep - and

he found Zavon Watkins, the speedy receiver finishing off a 76-yard scoring play that, with Tyland Thompson’s two-point run, pushed the Warriors ahead for good. To clinch it, Withrow went 20 yards for his third touchdown in the final minutes. Both Withrow and Thompson had productive nights as Thompson carried the ball 28 times for 150 yards. As Liverpool went home with a playoff berth in hand, CNS was at home, still reeling from what defending Class AA champion Baldwinsville had done to them, especially in the second quarter. B’ville had gone ahead 6-0 in the opening period on Casey Colligan’s 26-yard TD pass to Augie Zona.

And it was 13-0 when, early in that crucial second quarter, the Northstars got on the board with Corey Scanlon’s five-yard run and Steve Messur’s extra point. Then it all fell apart, as B’ville notched 21 unanswered points to make it 34-7 at halftime. The main culprit was Tyler Rouse, the Bees’ spectacular sophomore tailback whose 297 yards on the night gave him 1,326 yards for the season. Twice in that stretch, Rouse, who already had a 14-yard TD run in that period, broke through and around the CNS defense on long scoring runs - one covering 66 yards, the other going 41 yards. To cap it off, Colligan found Zona again for a 21-yard scoring pass just before halftime.

11

CNS would eat into that margin in the fourth quarter, Branden Lacey scoring on a five-yard run and Matt Ryle converting from six yards out. But a trio of Mark Stanard field goals wrapped it up for the Bees, who duel with fellow unbeaten CBA next weekend for the Class AA-1 regular-season title. The Northstars’ regular season concludes next Friday at Bragman Stadium against Central Square, who is 0-6. As for Liverpool, winners of three in a row after an 0-3 start, it has to visit 6-0 Fayetteville-Manlius (who just secured the Class AA-2 division title), a team it could face again on that same field a week later in the opening round of the AA playoffs.

CNS girls volleyball beats Liverpool in four Once again, the CiceroNorth Syracuse and Liverpool girls volleyball teams would line up against each other – and this time, the Northstars would prevail. During this four-game match last Wednesday night, the two sides started on rather even terms. CNS claimed the first game 25-22, only to see the Warriors storm back and earn a 25-19 victory in the second

game. That defeat, though, only seemed to make the Northstars angry, for in each of the next two games it lay into Liverpool, winning them by equal 25-15 margins to take the match. On a balanced CNS front line, Alex Silfer had eight kills and three aces, while Stephanie Gagnon earned seven kills. Cara Gannett contributed four kills, four blocks and two aces. Home & Garden Home Heating-Fireplaces

here’s a riddle:

What’s cozy and warm and Environmentally friendly ways to keep warm this winter

Cooler days are on the horizon. As the mercury drops, energy consumption to heat the home tends to rise. Individuals concerned about making environmentally friendly heating choices may wonder just what can be done to stay green - and save some green in the process. The average North American homeowner spends about $800 to $1000 for the winter season heating his or her home. Those who rely on natural gas tend to spend less overall than homeowners who use propane, electric or oil to fuel their furnaces. Reducing reliance on heating fuel benefits the planet and most people’s wallets. While it may not be possible to turn off the heat altogether this season, there are ways to reduce dependency by making a few changes.

Answer:

Get active.

Exercising produces internal body heat and can help people resist the temptation to turn up the thermostat. What’s more, active people are less likely to loaf around the house, where inactivity can lead to feelings of chilliness.

Lighting a fire and cuddling up with a blanket on a chilly night.

Block drafts.

Now is the time to seal any drafts around windows and doors. Caulking is a permanent fix, or weather-proof tape and plastic can be used. For those who want a little extra protection, draft “snakes” or other stuffed products can be placed on the bottom of doors to keep warm air in a room.

Bundle up.

People can don warmer clothes to wear around the house if it means being able to turn the thermostat down. Instead of trodding around the house wearing shorts

green

and going barefoot, wear slippers and sweat pants. Layering clothes enables individuals to customize clothing for feelings of comfort.

Program your thermostat.

A programmable thermostat enables homeowners to set the temperature accord-

ing to room activity. For example, the heat can be turned down when residents are out at work or sleeping.

Open the blinds, curtains.

Let the sun shine in when the sun is strong. The rays will help to heat the home naturally.

all over?

Be sure to also cut back shrubs and trees that block sunlight from entering the house.

Create a cozy atmosphere.

Light candles, the fireplace or a woodburning stove and cuddle around wearing a blanket.

Enjoy hearty foods.

Whip up plenty of stick-to-your-ribs meals, such as stews and soups. Not only will cooking warm up the house with ambient heat from the stove (Warning: Do not use the oven to heat a home), rich foods will take longer to digest, causing the body to produce more heat during digestion.

Why do windows When cooler weather arrives, homeowners often face a troublesome condition. Condensation forms on windows and can be a nuisance or even cause damage to the surrounding trim. There are

reasons why sweating windows occur. Knowing the causes is the key to fixing the situation. When air gets warm it expands and is able to absorb water. When the air cools, eventually it gets to

Warm, moist interior air meeting up with cold air from outside can cause window sweating. windows. The opposite can occur in the warmer months, when outdoor air condenses on windows because of an air-conditioned interior. There are many activities that put moisture in the air, including breathing, showering and cooking. Removing excess moisture from the home can help reduce condensation and window sweating. * Be sure that windowless bathrooms have an exhaust vent that will vent air outdoors. Bathroom doors also should have enough of a gap on the bottom of the door to let air inside the bathroom. * Gas appliances, such as fireplaces, should be

properly vented. * O pt for c o ok i ng methods that do not produce steam. * Lower the thermostat so that the home is cooler, ideally between 62 to 68 degrees F. * Check if the clothes dryer is properly vented outdoors. * Consider running a dehumidifier if moisture is a problem not easily

remedied. * Think about replacement windows. Insulated windows that feature double or triple panes will be more insulated, preventing the warm air in the home from meeting the cold air of outdoors. Also avoid metal window frames, as such frames tend to conduct the cold and can further exacerbate sweating issues.

Halloween Hints for tHe Home How to make your kids’ Jack-o-Lantern last longer Jack-o-lanterns are a staple of Halloween decorations. Making one last throughout the season is a trick of the trade even some veteran carvers struggle with. People young and old head to pumpkin patches to pick out the ideal pumpkins. Some prefer perfectly round ones, while others like tall, oblong ones. Whatever the decision, the majority of these pumpkins will be brought home and turned into jack-o-lanterns, or pumpkins carved with a design. The key to having a jack-o-lantern ready and prime for Halloween haunting is carving it at the right time. Carved pumpkins will not last forever, so timing it right is key. In general, carved pumpkins will last for about a week if kept in a cool place and out of direct sunlight. A pumpkin left in midday sun and heat will likely rot or mold much more quickly. For those planning on carving pumpkins for Halloween, it’s best to do so a day or two before the big day. This way the design will be crisp and fresh. There also are ways to increase the jack-o-lantern’s longevity. Some of the best methods involve inhibiting mold growth and dehydration of the pumpkin. One trick

is to submerge the cut pumpkin in a bucket of water for a few minutes after carving to moisten the flesh. Others say that spreading petroleum jelly on the inside of the car ved pumpkin will help. Comm e rc i a l c h e m i cal products that reduce the decay of the pumpkin may be effective as well. One can also try using a bleachand-water solution to keep mold from growing. Those who will simply allow nature to take its course should keep the pumpkin as cool as possible and remove as much of the flesh from the inside when carving. However, because no method is foolproof, the jack-o-lantern will most likely not make it more than a week, unless the goal is to discover new strains of mold growth. For those who want a permanently ghoulish jacko-lantern, it’s best to purchase a plastic or ceramic variety instead.

Deck the halls for Halloween, too!

A big part of the fun of Halloween is decorating for this festive season of ghouls and goblins. Whether hosting a haunted house party at your home or if you’re just hoping to dress up your home in the spirit of the season, the following directions can help give your home a more spooky feel this Halloween. Swinging Foam Bat Materials needed: Black craft foam sheet Blue ink pen Scissors Mini sunglasses with pin attachment, optional Wiggle eyes Tacky glue Hole punch Narrow ribbon Suction cup with either a hole or a hook attachment Directions: 1. Draw your bat on the craft foam sheet and cut out. 2. Either pin on the mini sunglasses or glue on the wiggle eyes. Let dry. 3. Punch a hole in the bat’s head near the top. 4. Run a small length of ribbon and through the hole. 5. If your suction cup has a hole in it, run the ribbon through the suction cup, then knot. If your suction cup has a hook attached, then just knot the ribbon and hang the bat.

People who don’t ‘get it’

To the editor: I am responding to an article published in the PostStandard on Thursday Sept. 23 submitted by Jon Exner of Cicero. The title of the article was “Cicero councilors should cut, not increase costs,” in regard to the TV cable franchise fee increase. Next let me draw attention to the last paragraph in this article: “I applaud Jim Corl, Jr. for his opposition and ask that the people of Cicero remember this in the next election when these people who just don’t get it should be voted out of office.” Also, Mr. Exner asked me to consider that many people are out of work or have had their income reduced. This however, does not appear to be the case with some workers in the town of Cicero At a budget hearing held at the Brewerton Fire Department in 2009 Councilor Jim Corl, Jr., the same councilor who voted against a modest 0.5 percent increase in cable franchise fee rates along with Councilor Conway and then supervisor and member of the Teamsters Union Chet

Dudzinski voted in favor of what amounted to a pay increase of 4 percent for 2010, 4.5 percent for 2011 and 4 percent in 2012 for the Teamsters employed by the town. What a lucrative contract it is. The Teamsters contract covers not only the employee but his or her entire family at 100 percent expense of the taxpayers of Cicero. This coverage includes disability, medical, dental, vision, accidental death and dismemberment and also legal assistance. Members of the PBA and CSEA unions, as well as the non-union members, all contribute toward their benefits. So yes, I ask you the residents and taxpayers of Cicero to remember this in the next election and “these” people who just don’t get it. Lynn Jennings Councilor, town of Cicero

Awards dinner a beautiful event

To the editor: I attended the North High School Hall of Fame awards dinner, which was held at the Doubletree Hotel.

It was attended by more than 400 North High alumni and friends. There were 28 alumni inducted into this first Hall of Fame. I have been to many of these award events in the past. I can truthfully say this presentation exceeded them all. Rick Gary MC’d the event. He added enjoyment to the awards and also it reached a point where it became hilarious. A special thanks to the many alumni who helped make this event special in many ways. Yes, we did open the even with the singing of the Star Spangled Banner. I know I speak for all the alumni and friends that night, we were all filled with nostalgia being proud to witness all the inductees accepting this honor. Many were awarded posthumously. We look forward to next year. The oldest inductee was Dr. J. G. Fred Hiss, 1911, and the youngest, Armond Arlotta, 1961. The plaques will be on permanent display at Armond Magnarelli Community Center at McChesney Park. As I was leaving I didn’t notice too many dry eyes. Tim Gangemi Class of January 1943 North Syracuse
