Here’s to you, Central New York Thousands of readers shout out their favorite local businesses in Advance Media New York’s first Readers’ Choice Awards
Dear readers, When Advance Media New York (AMNY) kicked off its inaugural CNY Readers’ Choice Awards, calling on Central New Yorkers to nominate their favorite local businesses, thousands of you answered. Garnering over 92,000 votes in more than 120 categories, the CNY Readers’ Choice Awards recognizes top-five nominated businesses in each category from Cayuga, Cortland, Madison, Oneida, Onondaga, Oswego, Seneca and Tompkins counties. Throughout the fall, we saw nominations, voting and a bit of friendly competition take place. You responded overwhelmingly to show your appreciation for the people behind the local businesses that make Central New York a great place to live, work and play. We’re proud to note that the idea for Readers’ Choice grew out of AMNY Cares, a program designed to assist and spotlight area businesses facing the challenges of the coronavirus pandemic. We saw an opportunity to give readers a way to recognize their favorite local companies for outstanding
service, and you took it. This challenging year has showed us what we value, and that includes the people we trust with everything from our carburetors and haircuts to bathroom remodels and wedding plans. We’ve been privileged to serve Central New York for over 190 years, and it has been heartwarming to see so many members of our community reaffirm their commitment to each other. We would like to thank everyone who voted. Congratulations to all our nominees and winners. Here’s to you.

Romantic Outings
In this first CNY Readers’ Choice Awards contest, a set of categories were determined, considering the businesses, event, and places that are most important to the Central New York community. The categories – 123 of them – were organized into six different groups: Automotive, Food/Dining, Outings, Mostmissed During COVID, Shopping/Services, & Professionals. These groups and categories were added to the CNY Readers’ Choice 2020 online ballot. The nomination phase began on September 27. Advance Media New York launched a marketing campaign encouraging the Central New York community to visit the online ballot to write in nominations for their favorite businesses, events, and places in as many categories as they wanted. Users were only allowed to make one nomination per category. Businesses and attractions in Onondaga, Cayuga, Cortland, Madison, Oneida, Oswego, Seneca and Tompkins

Counties were eligible. Registering for Readers’ Choice and making at least one nomination entered users into a sweepstakes for a chance to win $150. Nominations were accepted until October 18 and nominations were tabulated the next day. 10,800 nominations were submitted from more than 2,800 people. The top 5 nominees (sometimes more, if there were ties) in each category moved on to the voting round. The voting round took place November 8–29. During that time, the online ballot reopened, and the community came back to vote on the top nominees in each category. Again, users had the opportunity to enter for a chance to win $150 by casting at least one vote. In all, more than 91,000 votes were cast by over 9,700 unique voters.

Big day bliss Wedding celebrations always require an extra level of care, and Central New Yorkers let us know which big-day pros helped their nuptials go off without a hitch. For those who are too busy for, or need a hand with, the detail work that goes into weddings, a wedding planner, such as Simply Aly Events is invaluable. Now more than ever, a professional planner can help couples navigate their desires for a ceremony and reception that truly reflect their personalities, as well as the requirements necessary to make the festivities safe in 2021. Lindsay Cole at the Marriott Syracuse Downtown (which is still lovingly referred to as Hotel Syracuse), and MLH Events Wedding and Event Planning rounded out the top three. Arlington Acres in LaFayette has been dazzling couples and their guests for four years with its rustic 1860s barn and sweeping grounds. Couples praise the charm of the setting and the high level of service from the family-owned venue. Equally historic, the Marriott Syracuse Downtown and The SEE BIG DAY BLISS, PAGE 12

Sinclair of Skaneateles similarly earned a high number of votes. Capturing the special moments, big and small, is an honor for photographers like Bach Photo Images, and of course that includes engagements and weddings. For don’t-miss milestones, Sarah Heppell Photography and Monica Browning Photography are both well regarded by readers, as well. To find just the right rings to symbolize forever, readers recommended Egon Ehrlinspiel Jewelers undoubtedly due to their selection and highly experienced long-time staff. For engagement rings, wedding bands and other fine jewelry and watches, Henry Wilson Jewelers and Jewelry on James garnered second and third place, respectively. From simple wildflowers to grandiose displays, floral arrangements set the scene and style of a wedding. Readers trust Sam Rao Florist, St. Agnes Florist and Creative Florist as their top choices for making decorative dreams come true. When it comes to finding “the one,” brides chose Mirror Mirror, Inc. bridal boutique. Other top bridal shops as voted on by our readers are New York Bride & Co. and David’s Bridal.

Foodies’ faves Lucky for us, CNY is a foodie’s paradise with worldly and world-class cuisine catering to a wide variety of tastes and sensitivities. Whether its Italian or sushi, vegan or gluten sensitive, healthy or… not, there are plenty of dining spots that satisfy every taste and craving. Here’s how readers voted. FOOD/DINING: CHINESE
Readers chose China Pavilion on West Genesee Street in Syracuse for its offerings of fresh, healthy Chinese dishes. From shrimp with fresh mango and beef with basil sauce to Moo Goo Gai Pan and Pad Thai, main ingredients always include fresh meats, seafoods and vegetables. Second Place went to China Café, Runner Up went to China King. FOOD/DINING: INDIAN
Dosa Grill’s offerings of Indian cuisine uses original recipes and fresh ingredients. Always mindful of patrons’ preference for hot, mild or medium spiciness, this casual DeWitt dining spot featuring authentic Indian fare is a reader fave. Second place went to AppeThaizing, Runner Up went to Indian Grill. FOOD/DINING: ITALIAN
Family-owned Francesca’s Cucina in Syracuse’s historic Little Italy is known for its regional Italian American classics like Utica Greens and Chicken Riggies. Other popular dishes include Lobster Ravioli and Gorgonzola Gnocchi. This longtime local favorite comes from a line of local restauranteurs that go back four generations. Second Place went to Santangelo’s Restaurant, Runner Up went to Angotti’s Family Restaurant.
Dosa Grill offers excellent tandoori shrimp. Jane Marmaduke Woodman
FOOD/DINING: MEDITERRANEAN/ MIDDLE EASTERN
For those craving fresh Mediterranean fare, King David’s Restaurant on Marshall Street in Syracuse has been a Central New York fixture since 1974. Its Fayetteville location opened in 2004. Featured entrees include a King David Super Sampler of Shish kabob, kibbeh, grape leaves, homous, falafel, babganouge, pita and salad. Second Place went to Kiki’s Authentic Greek Food, Runner Up went to Munjed’s Middle Eastern Café. FOOD/DINING: SUSHI
With its wildly diverse offerings of raw, cooked and vegetarian sushi plates, Wegmans won over readers as favorite Sushi Bar. From its spicy tuna volcano roll and crunchy California roll to its Nigiri and King Salmon Poke Bowl, offerings include single serve, family size and party platters. Second Place went to Ichiban, Runner Up went to Mitsuba. FOOD/DINING: TACO/BURRITO
Known for its fajitas, Azteca Mexican Grill had readers raving about the restaurant’s authentic Mexican fare that includes tacos, burritos, que-
CoreLife’s Southwest grilled chicken and purple rice blend. Mlive
sadillas, taco salads, chimichangas, enchiladas and much more. Their menu gets into delicious detail (a pina fajita – a fresh pineapple stuffed with rice, grilled chicken, onion, bell pepper, tomato and cheese — is served with lettuce, guac, sour cream and tomato) explaining what goes into each dish and many offerings include vegetarian, gluten-free and extra spicy options. Second Place went to Boom Boom Mex Mex Taqueria, Runner Up went to Alto Cinco. FOOD/DINING: VEGETARIAN/VEGAN
Focusing on healthy active lifestyles, fresh
local ingredients and made-from-scratch menu, CoreLife’s green, grain and broth bowls and power plates are an easy choice for health nuts who crave good, clean, delicious food. Full of flavor and texture — a BBQ Ranch Chicken bowl combines sticky purple rice, corn, black beans, cheddar cheese, tomatoes, jicama, chicken, tortilla strips and cilantro — the menu features vegan, gluten-free and build-your-own bowl options and handcrafted beverages like their Honey Ginger Lemonade. Second Place went to Strong Hearts, Runner Up went to Greens ‘N’ Grains.

Most-missed during COVID If nothing else, 2020 reaffirmed our community’s love for the locally owned businesses and traditions we hold dear. Through word of mouth and social media, businesses that were able to open let us know how we could support them, and some got creative in the meantime. Here’s what our readers missed most: Thanks to its atmosphere, service and beer selection, Kitty Hoynes Irish Pub was ranked the most-missed bar. The karaoke livestreams are fun, but locals can’t wait for Singers Karaoke Club to reopen, and fans of Dark Horse Tavern are supporting their favorite spot with take-out orders. Going from apple-based ciders and spirits to hand sanitizer, and opening with some adaptations, earned Beak & Skiff Apple Farm first place in the Best COVID Pivot category. Although they had to pause in-house dining, Water Street Bagel’s customers have continued to find their bagels and service worth waiting in line for. The 443 Social Club and Lounge (formerly The Listening Room 443) has done yeoman’s work to provide a musical experience to Central New Yorkers in spite of all the restrictions, and it rounds out the top three best pivots. Perennial local favorite Francesca’s Cucina took the top spot for most-missed restaurant. Fans
rave about their exceptional food and ambiance, particularly in the courtyard. Locals also missed the casual experience and the tenders at Tully’s Good Times. While readers named Angry Garlic second most-missed restaurant, they found the eatery’s curbside takeout and to-go beverage pouches tops. Angry Garlic won both of those categories, thanks to their family-style meals and to-go Angry Marys. Daniella’s Steakhouse and Alto Cinco also handled curbside takeout well, so regulars didn’t have to go without. From potion flights to pomegranate martinis, Rise N Shine on Westcott and Pastabilities’ beverage pouches kept thirsts quenched. Not being able to hit the gym was difficult for many readers and North Syracuse Fit Body Boot Camp was voted most-missed gym because of its supportive atmosphere and results achieved. Members of Metabolic Fitness Liverpool and Elevate Fitness at Widewaters Parkway miss chasing their fitness goals, too. For great music with a side of stunning sunsets, St. Joseph’s Health Amphitheater at Lakeview took top spot for most-missed concert venue. Rounding out the top three are Landmark Theatre and the New York State Fairgrounds which both put on great shows.
As leading venue for touring Broadway musicals and more, Landmark Theatre takes home first place as most-missed entertainment venue. St. Joseph’s Health Amphitheater at Lakeview’s toptier concerts and Syracuse Stage’s thought-provoking productions earned them second place and runner-up, respectively. It may come as no surprise that the great New York State Fair was the festival/community event Central New Yorkers missed experiencing. From the fried foods to the midway and people watching, we are looking forward to the next Fair, which was also second most-missed food festival. Readers also await the return of two of our wonderful cultural festivals, the Irish Fest and St. Sophia’s Greek Cultural Festival (tie for runner up). Dollar samples and mainstage concerts draw readers to Taste of Syracuse, which was the mostmissed food festival of 2020 and second mostmissed festival/community event. Festa Italiano is another food festival we can’t wait to sink our teeth into, earning the runner up spot. Central New Yorkers really missed packing the Loud House to cheer for SU Basketball, which won for most-missed sporting event. Two others we want to see back in action — Syracuse Mets baseball and the Syracuse Crunch.

There’s a reason there’s often a line at Delta Sonic Car Wash. With three levels of car washes to interior and exterior detailing, your car will look like it just came off the lot. When you hit that next 3,000-5,000 miles, pull into Valvoline Instant Oil Change. Customers love not having to make an appointment to take care of this critical service, and there are many convenient locations. For aftermarket accessories such as remote starters, bike carriers or all-weather floor mats, Installations Unlimited’s wide selection and customer service has you covered.

Central New Yorkers named Advance Auto Parts as their number one spot for auto parts. For 90 years, family-owned Rudy Schmid Total Car Care has handled everything from fender benders to more serious damage, and won the auto body repair category due to its reputation for quality work. In Central New York, having the right tires is clutch. Dunn Tire offers more than 30 of the top tire brands. Congratulations to these CNY Readers’ Choice winners for keeping us moving.

Inspire Studios is the Readers’ Choice winner in the salon category.
Shear gratitude This past year has been more than challenging for Inspire Studios owner and operator Jennifer Pearson. The salon, which won first place in the salon category and is located in Baldwinsville, was closed for three months and reopened in June with limited capacity and limited services. Regardless, Inspire Studios fosters a social environment that is inviting and welcoming. “When I started Inspire, I was hoping for something that felt like the movie
‘Steel Magnolias,’” Pearson says. Clients consistently report that they feel truly heard at Inspire, and the pros there are experts at communicating reality versus expectations. Another likely reason they were chosen number one: “We also sing and dance a lot, so many say they come for the entertainment and karaoke factor!” From tip to toes, the full-service salon and day spa takes pride in offering all hair, skin, nail and massage services. Pearson and her team of four handle services for
proms, balls and weddings, plus they’ll travel to your location. When they’re able, the salon will resume Hair Styling Classes and pop-up shops. Winning the salon category means a lot to Pearson and her team. “We have all dedicated so much time, effort and love into what we do, it means the world. We love the bond we form with not only our clients but each other. It’s a team effort and all of us could not be more thrilled for this!”
They’re hot (and cool) Family-owned and operated since 1940, Charles Heating, Air Conditioning, Plumbing & Electrical offers a wide range of services to homeowners and businesses. It is their service record and experience that won them the CNY Readers’ Choice award in both the electrician and plumber categories, and second place in the heating/
cooling category. The company’s team of technicians is experienced in some of the most important services needed, including furnace and air conditioning installation and repair, duct cleaning, leak repairs, toilet and faucet repairs, sump pump service, electrical panel service and upgrades, lighting fixture and
ceiling fan installations, code compliance and new home wiring. Charles will provide services at locations up to a 25-mile radius from their Liverpool headquarters. Grateful customers note Charles’ quick response time and professional, knowledgeable service.

It’s a Gift For gifting needs ranging from sentimental to irreverent, visit Witty Wicks, which took first place for both accessories and gift shop in the Readers’ Choice Awards. In the nine years since Aubry Panek founded the company, Witty Wicks has grown from a kitchen-table operation, to her basement, to a small storefront in the village of Camillus, to the bustling shop in Township 5 it is today, which itself doubled in size in late 2019. Witty Wicks’ locally made all-natural soy wax candles, with handcrafted fragrances, earn rave reviews from customers. Those who join the Scent of the Month club receive a new 14-ounce candle each month ahead of its public release. The shop has expanded well beyond their signature candles to offer clothing, home décor, gourmet items and bath and body products. The helpful staff can guide you to something special for anyone in your life and create custom gift baskets. Witty Wicks also partners with local nonprofits, creating custom scents for groups like ACR Health and The Redhouse Arts Center; a portion of the sales proceeds are directed back to those organizations. “We have been continually humbled by the amazing customer support that we receive

year after year, especially this year. We work hard to carry a diversified selection of local and small business goods from across the country, we love to buy from companies that give back to their community. Knowing that our customers appreciate that is so overwhelming for us,” Panek says.
Glazed & Confused constantly entices its audience with colorful hero shots and mouthwatering Fill It Friday specials. That they won for best use of social media doesn’t surprise any of the legion of fans willing to wait in line for the Valenti family’s donut creations.
