9 CHALLENGING HIKES TAKE YOU TO NEW HEIGHTS By CHUCK D’IMPERIO
H
ERE IS A LIST OF NINE HIKING EXPERIENCES TO CHECK OUT THIS SUMMER. SOME ARE CHALLENGING,
OTHERS ARE MORE FAMILY-FRIENDLY. FOLLOW ALL TRAIL SIGNS, WARNINGS AND POSTED RULES. AND BE SURE TO WEAR PROPER HIKING SHOES AND KEEP AN EYE ON THE WEATHER. AS THEY SAY IN UPSTATE NY, “IF YOU DON’T LIKE THE WEATHER NOW, JUST WAIT AN HOUR OR TWO.” HAPPY TRAILS!
CASCADE MOUNTAIN (Essex County): CASCADE MOUNTAIN rises more than 4,000 feet above the ground and is one of the legendary 46 mountains known as the “High Peaks.” A moderate hiker should have no problem hiking this mountain, with the main trail about two and a half miles one way. The 360-degree view of Lake Placid at the summit is unimpeded. Along the trail you will come to a juncture that allows you to hike Porter Mountain. Porter is also a member of the High Peaks Club and is considered one of the group’s easiest climbs. This is a great chance to tick off two mountains in one glorious afternoon. If you think these two mountains are easy, think again. For those doing the math, Porter Mountain ranks 38 on the list of 46 peaks in order of hiking ease. Cascade Mountain ranks 36.

STAR GAZING UNDER THE NIGHT SKY Drive away from the city lights to find yourself under breathtaking starry skies. The Adirondack Sky Center and Observatory in Tupper Lake is open for public stargazing every clear Friday evening through September. A roll-off roof retracts to reveal four large mounted telescopes and an array of smaller equipment to help you get a close-up look at the constellations. Other observatories include Martz-Kohl Observatory in Western NY, Kopernik Observatory & Science Center in the Southern Tier and the Catskills Visitor Center amidst the beautiful Catskill Mountains.
SWEET FROZEN TREATS Finish your picture perfect summer evening with a frozen dessert from one of Upstate New York’s many ice cream stands. Find classic flavors in Central New York with Gannon’s or Big Dip; for foodies with adventurous palates in Western New York, try Lockport’s Lake Effect Artisan Ice Cream or Hedonist Ice Cream in Rochester. In the Penguin Custom Ice Cream Shop, where custom toppings are blended into each cone or cup. For a taste of tradition in the Adirondacks, sample Martha’s Dandee Creme in Lake George, which has been serving up smiles for more than 50 years or Donnelly’s Soft Ice Cream in Saranac Lake whose simple, yet delicious, ice cream menu has delighted guests since 1953.
