COME SEPTEMBER, there’s a certain chill in the air that sets the mood. It’s ap ple cider doughnut season. It’s pumpkin picking season. It’s leaf-peeping season. It’s quite possibly the most magical time of year in Upstate NY. The rolling hills and mountains are covered in candy-colored trees. The landscapes are majestic, and the adventures are endless.

BUT JUST AS THE LEAVES COMPLETELY FALL, the snow blan kets the region, creating a new arena for skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing and sledding. It’s the time of year to explore Upstate’s towns, go ice skating and see holiday light shows. Just because the temperatures have dropped doesn’t mean the fun has to end. In fact, it’s avail able in endless supply.
THE BEAUTY of Upstate New York is that we are lucky enough to experience all four seasons. Our springs are wet and lush. Our summers are hot and vibrant. But our falls and winters are something to write home about.

8. RHINEBECK DUTCHESS COUNTY
While most people readily recognize this Erie Canal village as the birthplace of the Latter Day Saints Movement, the village is really a lot more. There are many interesting stores in the little downtown business district to explore, and the businesses go right down to the waterfront. Mackenzie's Marketplace is a boutique store that just pops during the Christmas season. They feature many one-of-kind items including hundreds of hand-blown glass ornaments and holiday gifts. There are several small museums that should not be overlooked. The Alling Coverlet Museum features dozens of huge, handmade coverlets and quilts lining the walls and hanging from the ceilings. These are historic coverlets that comprise the largest collection of hand woven coverlets in America. Located in the middle of historic Palmyra, this museum is a must-see. The Erie Canal landing is just a few steps from historic Market Street and many businesses.
A picture perfect winter village! The beauty of this Norman Rockwell-tinged town is on full display during the holiday season. Christmas lights are everywhere, even on the tree far out at the end of the village pier. The area presents one of Up state's most charming Victorian strolls, with costumed characters and carolers on every corner. The stores are high-end and all sport charming window displays. This is a perfect winter day destination in Upstate New York. Cap your visit off with dinner at the historic Sherwood Inn. Built in 1807, this is one of the region's most celebrated restaurants and inns. With a dining room overlooking Ska neateles Lake, it just does not get cozier than here on a cold Upstate night.
7. EAST AURORA ERIE COUNTY This village packs a lot of wallop for having only about 6,000 residents. The Main Street is always busy, especially when it gets nearer to Christmas. There are many fine shops to stop at along the way. Be sure to see the magnificent old neon marquee of the Aurora Theatre in the middle of town. Its dazzling colorful lights give the whole village an aura of nostalgia. The theater popcorn is so well-known and well-liked that you can even order it online and have it shipped to you. Of course no visit to East Aurora would be complete without a trip to Vidler's 5 & 10 Variety Store. With thou sands of items for sale, and taking up the better part of an entire block, Vidler's has been called "America's Department Store." Check out Rick's on Main for din ing and cocktails. Great menu, super lo cation (right in the heart of everything) and a two-story dining room. Their garlic and herb ribeye steak can't be beat.

6. CHATHAM COLUMBIA COUNTY
This is country living at its best. Cha tham (population of 4,000) is sur rounded by sprawling horse farms and rustic mansions. The village itself has a three-block main business district with a variety of specialty shops, eating places and curiosity stores. There is always something unique and unusual at the Crow Cottage gift shop. Worth check ing out: the made-as-you-wait gourmet grilled cheese sandwich at Bimi's Cheese Shop and movies at the historic Crandell Theatre, the largest and oldest theater in Columbia County. These places are all located on the main street.
10. SKANEATELES
It is hard to believe that the listed popu lation for this Dutchess County hamlet is under 500. It always seems so busy with people filling the sidewalks, meandering the shop aisles at the many boutique stores, enjoying a favorite restaurant or seeing the historic sights. Rhinebeck is "old money Hudson Valley" with a great DNA to it. The Beekman Arms, located at the main four-corner intersection, is the oldest inn in America. Just one step inside the front door on a wintry day and the smells alone will draw you in: Fresh country cooking served on pewter plates in the dining room, the sweet aroma of Prohibition cocktails coming from the Colonial Tap Room tavern, the smoky scent of a roaring fireplace in the main area. It all makes for a magical Colonial moment during your winter stay in this famous little hamlet.
9. PALMYRA WAYNE COUNTY
With a population of about 6,000 resi dents, this village offers a host of inter esting places to explore. On the top of any list should be the Orleans County Historic District. Here in one single block is a jaw-dropping pageant of historic build ings displaying some marvelous architec ture. The crown jewel is the elegant coun ty courthouse, topped with a stunning gilded 36-foot tall dome. Spanning the surrounding block are no less than seven historic churches in varying styles. One of the churches was built by industrialist George Pullman. Just outside of the vil lage is the Historic Cobblestone District. Here you will find an array of cobblestone buildings that are a destination in and of themselves. Millions of little, shiny, round cobblestones dazzle in the afternoon sun as the preferred construction material of a church, a schoolhouse, a residence and more. Stop for lunch at Tillman's Village Inn for a prime rib dinner. It is located in the middle of the cobblestone district. A fun and historic (and delicious) way to spend a day in Albion.
SENECA COUNTY
Any season is a good season to visit this historic village. One of Upstate's most historic locales, your visit should include a stop at the Women's Rights National Historic Park and Museum where exhibits, displays, video presentations and statues honor Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton and others. The National Wom ens' Hall of Fame is also here. In addition, almost everybody knows the village's connection to the holiday classic "It's a Wonderful Life." Vist the bridge that was the inspiration for Frank Capra's opening scene of the film where Jimmy Stewart plunges into the icy water only to be saved by Clarence the angel. Stop for a bite to eat at the XIX Café. The food is good, the prices are reasonable and the atmosphere is all Seneca Falls. The walls feature murals depicting the lionesses of the movement, from Anthony and Stan ton, to Bloomer, Tubman, Mott and the other pioneers. The name, XIX, signifies the 19th amendment (women's right to vote).
In what other Upstate village with a population of less than 600 people could you find a wine bar, a historic inn and restaurant, a handful of specialty shops, an antique store, a soap maker, a spa and a mercantile store run by two guys famous around the world? It is all here in tiny Sharon Springs. The Beekman 1802 Mercantile is run by resident Josh Kilmer-Purcell and Brent Ridge. They live here, work here and entertain here (with great festivals and events). They are known around the world from their magazines, TV shows and product line of high-end housewares. The American Hotel is an 1847 Greek Revival inn and restaurant getting rave reviews from food critics as far away as New York City. And with a cozy fireplace roaring away in the parlor, this is the perfect place to catch your breath in this little snow globe of history and beauty called Sharon Springs.

4. LAKE GEORGE WARREN COUNTY
2. ALBION ORLEANS COUNTY
Experience a weekend in Lake George during snow season. You’ll find restau rants still open and many featuring an Adirondacks vibe. Shop the small stores and gift shops, along with huge outlet venues just south of the village. For the few overnight options still open, you can't beat the price (usually about a third of what they are in the summer). And the other bonus is the lack of the summer crowds. Typically you will encounter just locals or the hardy road warriors (like you) who are not afraid to visit a village with the word "lake" in its name during the winter months.
5. PITTSFORD MONROE COUNTY This suburb of Rochester defines the word "cute." Small, very walkable downtown area has many shopping and dining op tions, and the area along the historic Erie Canal is a splendid place for a walk. There are many interesting and architectural ly-pleasing buildings to enjoy, especially the Phoenix Building. Now housing offic es, it was once an inn, sporting a double chimney and Federal style, steep gabled look. Governor Dewitt Clinton spent the night here while on a surveying party researching the Erie Canal. Stroll along Schoen Place, a pedestrian area along the canal landing. Stop by the historic Village Coal Tower restaurant, one of Pittsford’s most popular eateries housed in a former Erie Canal coal station. A "Candlelight Evening" in December brings a large crowd to town for tree lighting, Santa vis its, horse-drawn wagon rides and more. For just an hour or an afternoon, this is a perfect winter place to stop and look around on your way to the hurly burly of downtown Rochester, just 10 miles up the highway.
