ational Geographic Traveler introduced its more than 700,000 readers to the 1000 Islands in its May/June edition of the publication. The world’s most widely-read travel magazine produced a featurelength article titled “A Thousand Islands of Summer,” that goes beyond the regular tourism mainstays and gives readers a sense of place and what makes the region unique. The story is available on the Traveler website, traveler.nationalgeographic. com. Staff as well as employees and volunteers from both U.S. and Canadian tourism businesses, showcased

the region to Traveler writer Pat Kelly and photographer Will Van Overbeek during their week-long August 2009 visit. Tourism workers and historians spent several winter months helping Traveler fact-checkers conﬁrm their information. “This kind of exposure is a huge boon for the 1000 Islands. National Geographic Traveler had long been a respected authority on travel and vacation destinations,” said Gary DeYoung, Thousand Island (TI) Council tourism director. “While we and others assisted, Traveler staff was very independent and sought to explore the region on their own. They produced a truly authentic traveler’s

perspective to the 1000 Islands.” National Geographic Traveler has more than 715,000 American readers. Approximately 20 percent — 140,500 — are based in New York and the adjacent states that make up the bulk of the 1000 Islands tourism market.

Tour the Erie Canal Exploring the canal’s beauty and history this season is as easy as taking a boat tour

he Erie Canal represents an important waterway that helped build the Empire State’s economy. The 363-mile, hand-dug canal was originally 40 feet wide and four feet wide, a veritable ditch for ﬂoating mule-drawn barges. The canal links the Hudson River with the Niagara River and in doing so, it cut shipping costs 95 percent, dramatically boosting the young state’s economy. In the early 1900s, the canal was improved and enlarged to accommodate larger, engine-driven watercraft and thus it further grew the state’s economy. Though you’re not likely to see mules on canalside towpaths as in the 1800s or transportation of goods as in the early 1900s, much about the canal and its original 83 locks remains. Exploring the canal’s beauty and history this season is as easy as taking a boat tour. Most Erie Canal boat tour companies operate May through October, so you’ll have plenty of time to select one or experience several. Here are a few of the numerous Erie Canal tour companies in the region. • Lockport Locks & Erie Canal Cruises (www.lockportlocks.com; 800-378-0352) focuses on the history of the Erie Canal. A 49-foot “lock through,” a procedure that raises and lowers the boat to accommodate the different water levels, adds to the experience. In addition to enjoying the canal, you can also peruse the displays at the facility’s Lockport & Erie Canal Heritage Museum. • Departing from Fairport, Colonial Belle Cruises (www.colonialbelle. com; 585-223-9470) boasts the largest boat cruise on the canal. The two- to three-hour tours include narration about historic points of interest and can include a meal or snack. Themed tours include murder mystery, Jimmy Buffet music, 4th of July dinner cruise, and a fall foliage tour for leaf peepers.

Canal Locks

So what’s all this about a “lock through” and what are water locks? Water locks allow boats to safely travel on waterways of varying depths. Since the Erie Canal crosses the state from Lake Erie to the Hudson River, that’s a lot of elevation change: 565 vertical feet to be exact. Locks allow a vessel to go up or down when those changes are abrupt without damaging the vessel or making the navigation difﬁcult.

orget about the hassle and expense of traveling far away to enjoy the great outdoors this season. The New York segment of the Great Lakes Seaway Trail boasts numerous natural wonders for your family to explore on a road trip through your own back yard. You can transverse the entire New York segment in about three days by car, including stops along the way. Start out in Niagara Falls, one of the region’s most famous natural landmarks. Some prefer the view from the Ontario, Canada side. The Maid of the Mist boat tour is a mustdo attraction, since it allows visitors to travel behind the falls. Check out www.niagarafallstourism.com to get info on visiting our northern neighbors. Leaving the City of Niagara Falls via the Rainbow Bridge, continue on the Seaway Trail on Route 104 to Lewiston. There you’ll ﬁnd Artpark (www.artpark.net) where you can enjoy the area’s natural beauty while catching a show at the amphitheater or sharing a picnic. Take Route 18F north and then merge onto Route 18 to Olcott. This

The Rice Creek Field Station in Oswego offers programs and three nature trails. leg of the trip features salmon and steelhead ﬁshing, so bring along your gear, anglers. Several cottages and B&B’s offer comfortable, affordable lodging (www.olcott-newfane.com/ html/accommodations.html) and some are located right on the beach. You can also charter boats to get out on the water. From Olcott, take Lake Road east for approximately 30 miles until you reach Sodus Point. Views from the top of the Lighthouse Museum (soduspointlighthouse.org) are spectacular. It’s well worth the climb. If you happen to arrive on a Sunday, make sure you linger at the lighthouse for the afternoon concert from 2 - 4 p.m. July 4 through Sept. 6. The music ranges from symphony orchestra to jazz bands to barbershop quartet crooners. Just bring a lawn chair or blanket. It’s free and super casual. Go south on Route 14 to Ridge Road and then east across Sodus Bay

Bridge (more great fishing!). Turn north onto Route 414 to visit Chimney Bluffs State Park. You can hike through the woods overlooking the lake or along the lakeshore, gazing upwards to the towering, sandy bluffs. One end of the park is developed with picnic tables and restroom and the other is relatively undeveloped with a small parking area. In the Village of Wolcott, Wolcott Falls Park features a pretty little waterfall tucked out of view. If you aren’t looking for it, you’d probably miss it. A short trail beginning at the edge of the picnic/playground area leads down to the waterfall. Picking up 104 again, take 104A up to the Oswego area. The Rice Creek Field Station in Oswego near Lake Ontario (www.oswego.edu/academics/opportunities/rice_creek_ field_station/) offers summer and fall programs and three nature trails. Birders will also have plenty of opportunities to spot their favorite feathered friends.

Pulaski’s Salmon River offers incomparable ﬁshing and gorgeous views of Lake Ontario. The Salmon River Lighthouse Museum, home of the Selkirk Lighthouse offers affordable cabin rentals or you can even rent the lighthouse for an unforgettable overnight stay. Boat rentals are also available. Continuing northbound, Route 104 turns into Route 3, leading to Sandy Pond. Frolic on 16 miles of lakeshore beachfront, the only notable freshwater sandy beach in the north. Cabin rentals in Sandy Pond are particularly affordable for families Following Route 12E west, Tibbetts Point in Cape Vincent is where Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River meet. Expect spectacular scenery as you enter the Thousand Islands region (www.1000islands.com)on Route 12 north. Whatever your interest in the outdoors, the Central New York segment of the Seaway Trail offers plenty to view and do.

amping is a great way to get outdoors and simplify life for a short time. There are no television shows to DVR, no tweets to respond to, no dirty dishes to tend to and life seems to go back to a simpler time. A relaxing camping trip can be just what the doctor ordered, that is unless you forget some camping necessities. Without the proper camping essentials, camping can quickly turn into a nightmarish tale of long-remembered woe. Here are some things you simply shouldn’t leave home and go camping without. Consider this your checklist. • Bug spray: They will be there and without spray you won’t want to be. • Baby Wipes: These are great for any sort of cleanup. Bring them once and you’ll wonder how you ever lived without them. • Extra water: This can be a matter of life and death. Always bring more than you will need. No one is going to stress if you have to dump some out when you leave. There are collapsible water containers out there that will allow you to bring enough. • Toilet paper: You simply do not want to be ﬁnding woodland alternatives for this. • Plastic shopping bags/garbage bags: You were taught not to litter when you were 2. Don’t make everyone turn around and go home. Pack them. • Matches/lighters: S’mores, hot dogs on sticks, Kumbaya? None of this is possible without a signature campfire. Keep them in a waterproof container. • A knife/scissors: There will be cutting on your trip. The question is, will you be prepared? • Extra blanket/clothing: No one should be sleeping in a running car all night. Bring some extra clothing and blankets, because you never know what Mother Nature has in store. • First Aid kit: You don’t want to be tying wounds off with vines. Bring a kit and save yourself a lot of frustration. • To o t h b r u s h / t o o t h p a s t e / mouthwash: Not showering for a day or two may be liberating, but leaving your mouth unattended that long is bad news for everyone. • Rain poncho: You can get two for $1. If it starts pouring, it will be the best 50 cents you ever spent. • Flashlight/lantern: Unless you want to go to bed at 7, bring yourself some extra light. You never know where you will have to go or what you will encounter, so be prepared to light your way. • Extra batteries/bulbs: Even if the flashlight is with you, it does no good without power. Bring the extra and the one time you need them, you won’t regret the planning. • Newspaper: Not everyone is an expert fire starter. You may think dry grass and twigs will be abundant, but a little backup never hurt anyone. If you don’t need it, burn it. • Maps/compass/GPS: No one

should be ending the camping trip praying for a search party to show up. Be safe and prepared by knowing where you are and where you want to go. • Extra contacts/glasses: Some of us can’t get around our homes without them, let alone unfamiliar wooded territory. Make sure you have a spare. • Cooking accessories/pot holder: Not everything will cook on a stick. Bring an old pan, some cutlery and other basic cooking necessities. No

one wants to reach into the ﬁre for an old metal pan without a potholder. If you want, throw in some dish detergent so you aren’t eating out of dirty dishes. • Watch/battery-operated clock: Your cell phone may not work in the woods. You can live without calling people and e-mail, but it might be a little harder to tell time by the sun. • Hand sanitizing gel: It’s not going to hurt anything. You never know what you might come in contact with when Mother Nature is involved.

Go ape this season learning about animals. Central New York abounds with animal venues, whether your kids like farm critters or would rather take a walk on the wild side. Try any or all of these animal adventure ideas. • In Alton, Cracker Box Palace at Alasa Farms (www.crackerboxpalace. org; 315-483-2493) is one of the area’s few farm animal-only shelters located on a historic Shaker farm. Rooted

in a philosophy of helping kids get in touch with the unwanted farm animals they harbor, the no-kill shelter gives a temporary and, in some cases, permanent home to nearly 200 animals from chicks to horses to pigs to goats. Cracker Box also hosts tours and special events such as Jammin’ in the Pasture and a fall festival. • Syracuse’s Rosamond Gifford Zoo (www.rosamondgiffordzoo.org; 315- (315) 435-8511) is about more

than just looking at the animals. The zoo also offers special events all year long. Summer & Fall The Best of Upstate New York When visiting a facility that houses animals, go over the following rules with your kids: • do not make any loud sounds or sudden movements around animals; this may frighten them and they may harm you in fear. • do not feed or touch animals unless the facility management has explicitly stated you may do so. • after touching animals, wash your hands or use hand sanitizer if no hand washing area is available. • do not touch your face, drink or eat after touching animals until you have cleaned your hands. • if you’re not sure what to do, ask the animal handlers ﬁrst. Kids can learn a lot about animals with farm tours such as this one at Cracker Box Palace in Alton. coons, wolves, alpacas, and lemurs. If you don’t know the answers to their questions, have them write down their query so they can ask the experts during your visit. Take photos of your children standing near their favorite critters. Pick up a few educational books or videos at the gift shop before you go home.
