THESE SUMMER AND FALL EVENTS ARE favorites for a reason: they’re fun and family-friendly. Plan now to make them part of your summer and fall.

COUNTY FAIR

Many county fairs have struggled in recent years with low attendance and fewer exhibitors and vendors. Although you may not be able to help your children raise a prize-winning calf to show (but you should if you can!), consider other ways to participate. Most county fairs have competitions for crafts, art, culinary arts and more. At least participate by attending. Bring along your children or grandchildren to explore the exhibits, watch animal shows and indulge in “fair food.”

NEW YORK STATE FAIR

If you really want to see everything at the New York State Fair, you’ll need at least two days. It has grown that big. The addition of the Exposition Center several years ago has increased the Fair’s footprint, along with the expansion of the midway and improvements in several of the animal barns.

Where else can you see a dairy calf birth live, watch a sea lion show, cheer on racing pigs, view a butter sculpture, tour an aquarium, go to the circus, pet exotic animals, twirl on carnival rides, watch top vocalists (free with admission!), see street performers and tour a museum all in one place?

HARBORFEST

Oswego’s 2024 Harborfest is slated for July 25-28. Begun in 1988 as a small, hometown event, Harborfest has grown into a major regional festival that attracts 75,000 guests annually. Attendees can peruse vendors of arts and crafts, hear live music and shop the farmers market. More than 30 performing acts are lined up, along with a midway and fireworks show. Donations and volunteers have kept the festival a free, family-friendly event.

LOCAL FESTIVALS

Nearly every community of any size hosts its own festival, such as Naples Grape Festival (www.naplesgrapefest.org), CNY Tomatofest (Au-

burn, www.cnytomatofest.org), Lyons Peppermint Days (www.lyonsny.com/ peppermintdays), Phelps Sauerkraut Weekend (www.phelpsny.com/sauerkraut-weekend). Even if you’re not a huge fan of the theme, check it out anyway. These events typically include live music, festival food and plenty to do. Supporting local businesses helps make the community stronger.

COMMUNITY CONCERTS

In a similar vein, many towns host free, open air concerts featuring area musicians. Attending these (and patronizing the supporting vendors) helps build a sense of community. Concerts in the park provide a lowkey means of introducing children and grandchildren to different music genres. Plus, they may be able to meet the musicians afterwards and check out their instruments.

FARMERS MARKETS

Unless you grow it yourself, you’ll not find fresher produce than at your local farmers market. Most communities host famers markets weekly, pro-

viding a means for farms to sell their goods directly. Why not go check out the vendors and pick up produce for the week? Some markets also include items like cheese, meat, honey, maple syrup and baked goods. Most farmers markets include ready-to-eat food, live entertainment and arts & crafts. These events also bring people together, making friends out of acquaintances. Make a habit out of stopping at the farmers market near you each week. NATURE WALKS/TALKS

The New York State Parks website (www.parks.ny.gov) lists events occurring at state parks near you. Why not plan to attend a nature walk, volunteer to clean up a park, or join a birding tour? In addition to enjoying a state park for the day, you may discover a great place to hike, picnic, ride or swim. Many also offer lodging, boat slips, and permit leashed dogs. The state’s website provides guidance on park use, so check it before heading out.

Great New York State Fair MUSIC ACTS TO EXPECT AT THE

Bigger and better than ever, the fair returns for its 183rd year

The Great New York State Fair plans for yet another star-studded run on its performing arts stages this August.

Last year, 932,699 people attended the fair, an increase of 54,589 from 2022.

For some, it’s a chance to catch a free concert.

The Fair’s Chevrolet Music Series includes 39 nationally-known acts with daily concerts at 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. at Chevy Court near Gate 1 and an 8 p.m. show daily at Suburban Park, just past the Midway. All of these concerts are free with admission to the fair. Both concert venues offer first-come, firstserved bleacher seating.

This year, artists performing live at the fair for the first time include Backstreet Boys alum AJ McLean and former NSYNC member Joey Fatone; pop/contemporary Christian band CAIN; country vocalist RVSHVD; preschool performers Blippi: The Wonderful World Tour; Celtic rockers The Elders; Danielle Ponder, soul vocalist; doo-wop vocalist Little Anthony; Sister Sledge (known for the hit song “We Are Family”), and 90s R&B and hip hop

performers Digital Underground, Tone Loc and Color Me Badd.

Favorites returning to the fair include Chubby Checker, Chapel Hart, Joan Jett and The Blackhearts, Herman’s Hermits starring Peter Noone, Blue Oyster Cult, Drop Kick Murphys and Kidz Bop.

Other fair performers have included Hilby, the Skinny German Juggle Boy and Bandaloni the one-man band, typically performing twice daily on the grounds.

As always, the fair hosts special days, including Governor’s Day (Aug. 21), Student Youth Day (Aug. 22, free for students 12-17), Law Enforcement Day (Aug. 26), Fire, Rescue & EMS Day and Beef Day (Aug. 27), Armed Forces Day and Dairy Day (Aug. 29), and more.

In addition to free concerts, the fair’s 375 acres host non-stop activi-

ties, exhibits and presentations for all 13 days, all included in the price of admission. It’s easy to see why the fair is often ranked among the top five such events nationwide and is the oldest state fair in the US.

The Great New York State Fair is Aug. 21-Sept. 2. The gates are open from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily with no re-entry after 10 p.m.

The buildings are open 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. The Wade Shows Midway will be open 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.

The fair operates tram service around the fairgrounds that provide nine stopping points and a dedicated ADA-compliant shuttle from the Gray Accessible Parking Lot to Tram Stop #3 from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. The Fair offers Baby Care Cottages for nursing mothers near Chevy Court, Gate 10 and The Eatery.

Daily admission is $8 for adults; free for children 12 and younger and seniors 65 and older. Parking is $12.

WATCHING OUR GARDENS COME BACK TO life after a winter that lingers into April is one of the highlights of spring and summer in Central New York. While tending to the horticulture at our homes can take a lot of time, energy and care, it’s fun to take in lush greenery, see flowers blooming and get inspired elsewhere, in more expansive gardens. MILLS MEMORIAL

ROSE GARDEN, SYRACUSE

This is a big year for the rose garden located in Thornden Park, steps away from the Syracuse University campus. The garden, tended by members of the Syracuse Rose Society and volunteers, celebrates its 100th anniversary. Rose Day at the garden is scheduled for 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 15, and the public is invited to attend. But you can visit the garden and its more than 3,000 rose bushes

SYCAMORE HILL GARDENS, MARCELLUS

Where can you stroll more than 30 acres of diverse trees, shrubs, perennials and spring flowering bulbs and enjoy koi ponds, fountains, stonework, statuary and a hedge maze, among other features? Sycamore Hill, the home of George and Karen Hanford. The gardens are open seasonally by reservation only for self-guided tours. See the website for admission and other details.

JAMES PASS ARBORETUM, SYRACUSE

What is an arboretum, exactly?

It’s a garden dedicated to trees. The Pass Arboretum is bounded by South Avery Avenue, Tompkins Street and Salisbury Road in the Tipperary Hill neighborhood on the west side of Syracuse. The 13.8-acre park was donated to the city by Adelaide Pass, in memory of her late husband, on Arbor Day 1925. Original features, including a gardener’s house and pond, no longer exist. Today, the space “serves as a special collection of trees and a place of solitude where people can come to learn or come to relax,’’ according to the Syracuse Parks Conservancy.

BUTTERFLY GARDEN OF HOPE, LIVERPOOL

You’ve probably driven past the Butterfly Garden of Hope, but have you ever stopped to see it in its splendor? The butterfly-shaped garden off Onondaga Lake Parkway is a “memorial to those who have died, a symbol of hope to the living and a place of comfort for the grieving,’’ according to Hope for

Bereaved, the organization that established and maintains the garden. The garden is planted with flowering trees, shrubs and plants. It’s dotted with park benches, a gazebo and other features and is available by the hour for special events (reservations are required and there is a fee).

SONNENBERG GARDENS AND MANSION STATE HISTORIC PARK, CANANDAIGUA

Sonnenberg is Ontario County’s top tourist destination, attracting more than 35,000 visitors each year. Some people come to stroll in the formal gardens, while others come for a look at parts of the eclectic 40-room Queen Anne Victorian-style mansion built in 1886-1887 for New York City financier Frederick Ferris and his wife, philanthropist Mary Clark Thompson. The gardens include an Italian garden, rose garden, kitchen garden and Japanese garden. Sonnenberg is open May 2 to

Oct. 31 (closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays). Admission is $16 for adults (discounts for seniors, students, youths, children and military).

THE LAKE HOUSE ON CANANDAIGUA, CANANDAIGUA

If you missed springtime in bloom at the Lake House, with 6,100 bulbs that span the resort, be sure to visit in summer. All flowers on the sweeping lakefront property are planted by director of horticulture John D. Faerber, who considers the grounds his canvas and loves to share his work and gardening expertise with others. If you’re in the Canandaigua area on a Saturday morning, be sure to visit the Lake House. At 9 a.m., Faerber leads hotel guests and visitors on a garden and greenhouse tour, where he showcases his work and offers tips for gardening at home. The tours are free and open to all. Arrive a few minutes early and gather in the hotel lobby. In summer, visitors can expect to see roses, lilacs, irises, peonies and more. In the greenhouse, learn about the

vegetables, herbs and edible flowers that are raised for use in dishes at the hotel’s Rose Tavern restaurant.

Cornell Botanic Gardens, Ithaca Spring gardens, summer gardens, fall gardens, winter gardens, “garden rooms,’’ shrubs, ornamental grasses –take a field trip to Ithaca this season or any season. The gardens and natural areas of Cornell Botanic Gardens are open dawn to dusk, free of charge, all year. There are acres upon acres of plant life to discover, so begin your visit at the Nevin Welcome Center and get a feel for what you might like to see. The center is open 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday. It’s surrounded by themed gardens highlighting herbs, flowers, tropical plants, vegetables and more.

ROOT GLEN, HAMILTON COLLEGE, CLINTON

quiet in the summer months, and the most quiet, contemplative spot of all might be the wooded and shady Root Glen. The glen, lined with shale paths for walking, is an arboretum that’s home to “65 species of trees, dozens of shrubs and scores of flowers,’’ according to the college. The glen takes its name from the Root family, who lived near today’s campus and planted and maintained its extensive collection of trees and flowering plants from 1850 to 1971, when ownership was transferred to the college. The glen is open for enjoyment from sunrise to sunset year-round.

Brookwood Point Conservation Area and Gardens, Cooperstown

This diverse property, owned and operated by the Otsego Land Trust, has been described as an “outdoor classroom.’’ Brookwood Point, an estate in the Glimmerglass Historic District dating to the 1820s, features a century-old Italianate Renaissance garden, other formal gardens and

excellent views of Otsego Lake. The land trust calls the 22-acre property “a melting pot of wildlife,’’ thanks to its mix of lake shore, creek and wetlands. The property, also used for private events, is open dawn to dusk daily.

CUTLER BOTANIC GARDEN, BINGHAMTON

This four-acre demonstration garden is noted for its flower-filled paths, themed gardens and gazebo. In between are grassy areas and benches for relaxing. For the uninitiated, the Cutler Garden is one of more than 300 gardens in the U.S. designated as a display garden of All-America Selections annual and vegetable varieties. All-America Selections is a nonprofit organization that tests new varieties of plants and vegetables for home gardeners. The Cutler Garden is operated and maintained by Cornell Cooperative Extension of Broome County. It’s open dawn to dusk daily. If

you’re traveling, pack a picnic and get off busy Interstate 81.

PARKER F. SCRIPTURE BOTANICAL GARDEN, ORISKANY

The Scripture Garden is a series of about 12 gardens that peak at different times throughout the growing season, according to Cornell Cooperative Extension of Oneida County. The gardens, which surround CCE, include perennials, annuals, herbs, roses, hostas, daylilies, vegetables, pollinators, shrubs and dahlias, among others. There’s also a Butterfly House (in season) and nature trail. The garden is named for former Oneida County legislator Parker F. Scripture. It’s open daily from dawn to dusk.

Auburn’s Harriet’s Lantern Trail

Trail shines a light on 11 landmarks significant in Tubman’s life

AUBURN HAS BEEN DUBBED “HISTORY’S HOMETOWN” — an appropriate nickname since many figures in the chapters of American history have ties to the city.

Today, visitors can delve into some of those chapters by taking part in an interactive walking tour, called Harriet’s Lantern Trail.

Named for Harriet Tubman, who was instrumental in the Underground Railroad and lived in Auburn for 50plus years until her death in 1913, the Lantern Trail shines a light on 11 landmarks significant in Tubman’s life, as well as other historical locations, and arts and cultural institutions. A number of the sites highlight abolition and women’s suffrage, since Auburn has long been recognized as a center for these movements.

The tour will appeal to history buffs, to be sure, but also to the younger visitors because it incorporates a digital component with its QR codes, said Courtney Rae Kasper, visitor experience manager for the NYS Equal Rights Heritage Center.

Trail organizers continue to reach out to the younger generations, to “get them to take pride in the place and

have pride in history,” Kasper added.

Each spot on the tour features a sticker located on the building or a marker near the venue that bears a lantern logo and a QR code.

Visitors scan that code on their phones, and documents, photos and in some cases videos will pop up with more information on that particular venue.

Visitors are then encouraged to take a picture of the sites and once they have all 11, they can visit the NYS Equal Rights Heritage Center, at 25 South St., for a free gift bag.

The trail is free and the sites are within a two-mile radius of the Heritage Center, Kasper said. Visitors can start at any point along the way, and they can take as long as they want to complete the tour. They are also welcome to tour those sites where there are museums. There may be a fee for some of those locations.

The Lantern Trail is an interesting prologue for those who wish to explore those chapters of history.

1 NYS EQUAL RIGHTS HERITAGE CENTER (HISTORICAL MARKER)

The center was the former location of Auburn’s Women’s Educational and Industrial Union (WEIU), which was established in 1882 and modeled after the Union that was begun in Boston in 1877. It quickly outgrew its original space, and a center was established on this South Street site, offering nursing, bookkeeping and typewriting classes, an employment service and recreational opportunities for women. It would later merge with the YMCA.

Many are familiar with William Seward, former New York state governor, secretary of state under President

Abraham Lincoln and the man who arranged for the purchase of Alaska, which became known as Seward’s Folly. However, his wife, Frances, holds a significant place in history as well. Frances and Tubman became friends, and Frances had turned the basement of the house into a station on the Underground Railroad.

Arguably the most famous “conductor” on the Underground Railroad, Harriet Tubman lived in Auburn, from 1859 until her death in 1913. In 1903, she transferred 25 acres to the AME Zion Church for the Harriet Tubman Home for the Aged and Infirm Negros. That home would open in 1908, and Harriet went there to live in 1911 until her death two years later. The Harriet Tubman National Historical Park was established in 2017.

Alcohol-free Finger Lakes

What is there to drink for people who don’t consume alcohol? It turns out, plenty of places are now offering non-alcoholic drinks

THE FINGER LAKES REGION IS WELL known for its wineries (more than 100), plus a growing number of craft breweries, cideries and distilleries.

But what is there to drink for people who don’t consume alcohol?

Not that long ago, the choices were slim or non existent if you visited a winery (or brewery or distillery) and wanted to order a non alcoholic beverage. You had to make do with water or maybe some bottled iced tea, or bring your own NA drinks in a cooler.

But times change. And America’s relationship with alcohol appears to be changing, too.

Many of us are on a mission to drink less, according to market research company NCSolutions. Younger people, especially, are driving this shift: Sixty-one percent of GenZ and 49% of millennials say they want to cut back on drinking. Reasons people cite for abstaining include prioritizing mental and physical health, losing weight and saving money.

The “sober curious” trend isn’t limited to “Dry January” and to the young. More than one in three Americans tried non alcoholic drinks in 2023, NCSolutions reports. Top non alcoholic drinks Americans want to consume this year (in order of preference) include mocktails, CBD- and THC-infused drinks and non alcoholic beer, non-alcoholic spirits and non alcoholic wine.

Rochester resident Chris Clemens, creator of the website NonROCaholic (www.nonrocaholic.com) and its social media counterparts (@nonrocaholic on Instagram and Facebook) has been highlighting buzz-free beverage options in the Finger Lakes for almost a decade.

Before Nonrocaholic,, which he launched last year, Clemens traveled the region extensively for another website he created, Exploring Upstate. There, in addition to regional travel stories, he provided lake-by-lake guides called the Finger Lakes

Non-Wine Trail.

Creative drinks minus booze are a market segment that’s ripe for growth and improvement, Clemens says, but alcohol-free alternatives are out there if you look for them and ask for them. That’s why he created Nonrocaholic: to share his discoveries and advocate for more options.

“I’ve been sober for awhile so non alcoholic options have long been a personal interest of mine,’’ Clemens explains. “Since the options have been getting better in recent years, I thought it’d be fun to really delve deep into how that was transforming. At the same time, our culture in the U.S. has been changing, so there’s a lot to learn and explore. It’s been super cool to find a community of other folks who are looking for the same things I am.’’

Following are some alcohol-free options in the Finger Lakes, some shared by Clemens and others learned about through the grapevine.

GET JUICED

No winemakers in the Finger Lakes are producing dealcoholized wines at this time, but that day may come. In the meantime, there’s grape juice, which is produced seasonally by many wine producers. And not just Concord grape juice.

One of Clemens’ favorite spots to visit is Billsboro Winery in Geneva. There, the choices for those seeking something alcohol-free include a flight of grape juices from Fulkerson Winery and Farm, also on Seneca Lake. These grape juices are made from grapes usually used to make wine. “Doing a flight of juices that includes Valvin Muscat and Riesling is really fun and interesting,’’ Clemens notes.

OTHER GRAPE-Y OPTIONS:

Swedish Hill Winery in Romulus, on Cayuga Lake, produces two craft grape juices, one from Concord grapes and another from Diamond (a white grape that’s a cross between Concord and Iona grapes).

Wagner Vineyards Estate Winery in Lodi, on Seneca Lake, produces a pretty-in-pink blush grape juice that’s described as a little bit sweet and a little bit dry.

Heron Hill Winery, near Hammondsport, on Keuka Lake, offers Concord grape juice mixed with a hint of apple cider, and Dancing Bear Grape Iced Tea, a combination of black tea and grape juice.

NA options abound at Arbor Hill Grapery and Winery, Naples, which uses its own Concord grapes to make Healthy Purple, an award-winning grape juice. The winery is also known for its sparkling grape beverages, including white grape, peach grape and raspberry grape refreshers.

Hungry? Check out sister restaurant Brew and Brats. NA beverage options include a grape float and the “brews” include a house-made root beer. “I like hanging here because there are a lot of options and I’m not just limited to one or two things,’’ Clemens says of the restaurant.

Rochester-based Genesee Brewing Company, the oldest brewery in New York State, has been brewing NA beer since 1991. And there are smaller, craft options in the Finger Lakes region.

Twisted Rail Brewing Company, with locations in Canandaigua, Geneva, Honeoye and Macedon, is noted for its hazy non alcoholic IPA, available on tap and for growler fills in the tasting rooms.

Auburn’s Prison City Brewery made headlines in the beer universe earlier this year when it introduced NA versions of several of its beers, includ-

ing the popular Mass Riot IPA. Prison City has two locations in Auburn and usually has a NA beer on tap at each. Brooklyn-based brewer Other Half has grown to include a brewery and taproom in Bloomfield (near Canandaigua) and Buffalo and diversified its offerings to include a non-alcoholic hazy IPA. If you like haze and hops minus the beer buzz, you might find it on tap at the Finger Lakes location.

room high on a hill, in a restored 1800s barn. The brewery is known for its ales and IPAs, but for Clemens, the draw is the house-made root beer, available on tap.

Three Brothers Wineries and Estates, near Geneva, bills itself as the No. 1 craft beverage destination in the Finger Lakes. Wines, beers and hard ciders are produced on the expansive site. There’s also coffee, a café and several varieties of Iron Heart craft sodas: root beer, orange cream, black cherry and lemon lime.

SPECIALTY SIPS

Some people come to Finger Lakes Cider House in Interlaken, near Cayuga Lake, for the hard ciders and wines made on site and the food sourced from local farms. Others come for the peaceful country atmosphere

and the selection of non alcoholic drinks.

Clemens recommends the ginger bear, a sparkling NA drink made with ginger, citrus and honey, and the switchel, an old-fashioned, thirst-quenching, sweet and sour vinegar-based tonic made with ginger, maple syrup and honey. Also available is a blueberry lavender “shrub,’’ a vinegar-based mixer that can be combined with sparkling water, ginger bear or switchel for a refreshing change of pace.

MOCKTAILS

Hollerhorn Distilling in Naples kicked off 2024 with the addition of list of mocktails made with Seedlip non alcoholic spirits, including an NA bloody mary, NA pomegranate sangria and an NA version of its signature Na-

ples mule, made with lime juice, grape juice and Goslings ginger beer. Seedlip is a premium British brand made with herbs, spices, botanicals and other plant-based ingredients.

The Sand Bar at the Lake House on Canandaigua bills itself as “the greatest place in the Finger Lakes to crack open a beer,’’ but Clemens appreciates the bar’s mocktails using Seedlip NA spirits, including a “mojit-no” and blood orange “cos-no-politan.” Bartenders at the resort hotel near Canandaigua will also make other NA drinks on request. “In the summer, their open dining room and lakeside seating is a pretty fantastic way to take in the fresh air,’’ Clemens notes.

This route is dotted with tons of points of interest — from Avon all the way to Skaneateales

For about 75 miles, state Route 5 and U.S. Route 20 merge, beginning in Avon in the west and winding through Canandaigua, Geneva, Waterloo and Seneca Falls before culminating in Auburn in the east, then Skaneateles. It’s one of the most scenic roads in Central and Western New York. Here are some of the highlights of the area.

AVON

Catch a flick at Vintage Drive-In (www.vintagedrivin.com), boasting four screens of entertainment at the retro-style drive-in. Hike the Erie Attica Trail, whose western trailhead lies in Avon and extends all the way to Rochester. Dining choices include the ever-popular Tom Wahl’s, Mor-

talis Brewing Company, Avon Village Restaurant, Fratelli’s Restaurant, Avon Inn, Avondale Pub and Duffy’s Tavern.

CANANDAIGUA

History and horticulture buffs should plan to tour Sonnenberg Gardens (www.sonnenberg.org) and Granger Homestead (www.grangerhomestead.org). Sonnenberg is a well-preserved, 50-acre Victorian estate with period furnishings and nine formal gardens in various themes. It is also home to the Finger Lakes Wine Center. Along with an 1816 Federal style home, Granger features a sizable horse-drawn vehicle collection. Roseland Waterpark (www.roselandwaterpark.com) offers 56 acres of splashing good times, from a sizable kiddie play

area to ride-us-if-you-dare water rides and the Roseland Wake Park. If you prefer to enjoy water more contemplatively, take a stroll down Canandaigua City Pier on Lakeshore Drive adjacent to Kershaw Park. Book a dinner cruise or tour on Canandaigua Lady (www. cdgalady.com), a replica 19th century paddlewheel steamboat. Birthplace of Memorial Day, Waterloo is home to the National Memorial Day Museum (www.wlhs-ny.com). Take a walk through downtown to view plenty of well-preserved historic architecture. Not far from the center of the village, Muranda Cheese Company (www.murandacheese.com) offers cheese tastings in a late 1800s rustic barn that includes a cheese cave in the cellar, all a stone’s throw from the herd. The gift shop is worth a stop as it brims with unusual finds from all over CNY—not

mass-produced mementos. Strawberry Fields also operates a full-service floral shop on site.

SKANEATELES

The unique shops lining Skaneateles’s downtown have earned acclaim for their variety and quality; however, Skaneateles Lake also attracts many visitors. Thayer Park or Clift Park are charming spots to picnic or just watch the boats glide by. MidLakes Navigation (www.midlakesnavigation.com) offers guided boat cruises, dinner cruises and Mailboat Tours that involve delivering mail to the camps around the lake (tip: this is the longest

tour!). Mirbeau Spa (www.skaneateles. mirbeau.com/spa) offers lovely ambiance as part of the pampering with Monet-inspired art and French décor influences.

The dining options seem nearly innumerable in Skaneateles, but a few stand-out options include Sherwood Inn, Doug’s Fish Fry, Elderberry Pond, Joelle’s French Bistro, The Elephant and the Dove, Rosalie’s Cucina, Gilda’s, and The Krebs Restaurant. And pick up baked treats at Heart ‘N Hand, The Patisserie and Skaneateles Bakery.

THE ONE SQUARE MILE OF HOPE event in the Adirondack town of Inlet is fun and fundraising all rolled into one, according to its website. And it is all that, but there’s more — this year’s participants can possibly set a new world record.

If 3,151 boats gather on the lake near Inlet’s Arrowhead Park — on the Fourth Lake —, the village can break the record it set in 2014 when it had 3,150 kayaks, said Adele Burnett, tourism director for the Town of Inlet and

co-chair of the event. The 2014 event marked the third time that Inlet had garnered the title in six years.

Since it has become so popular over the years, people are constantly asking when the next one is, Burnett said they decided to hold it again this summer and try to set a new record. But this is secondary to raising funds, Burnett noted.

through the event’s website, onesquaremileofhope.org.

Once signed up, participants will receive information on parking, launch sites and packet pick-up.

Because of the relatively small size of the town and park, many of those who take part will find their own spots to put in — perhaps a nearby motel or a camp that they or friends own —and paddle their way to the area to Arrowhead Park.

The entry fee is $40 per boat, and it’s the kayak, canoe or guideboat that makes up the count; not the number of people who are in the boats.

If the Guinness Book of World Records opts to acknowledge the event, it will tell the organizers what it requires, Burnett explained. In its previous three attempts, Guinness required a photo, a video showing the raft free floating for 30 seconds without touching any land mass or motorized vessel, and proof of how they counted the boats in the raft, she added.

Inlet’s first attempt to break the

record was in 2008, when Connie Perry, owner of the Frisky Otter Tours, a kayak rental outfit in Inlet and a member of the Inlet Business Association, had a friend who had breast cancer and ultimately died. She had wanted to do something to increase awareness of the disease. Someone, Burnett said, had stumbled across a Guinness World Record for the largest raft of canoes and kayaks, and with Perry owning the Frisky Otter, it seemed like an appropriate venture to take on.

That year, Inlet ended up with 1,104 boats, beating the then-record held by Cleveland with 776 boats. In 2010, Pittsburgh bested Inlet with 1,619. Inlet took the title back in 2011 with 1,902. In 2013, Suttons Bay on Lake Michigan broke it with 2,099, and Inlet claimed it back in 2014 with 3,150.

Organizers never dreamed they would actually break the record in their first attempt, but perhaps even more gratifying was that they raised more than $53,000, Burnett said. And

they have been very successful in their fundraising efforts, having raised $300,000 for breast cancer programs and awareness initiatives, Burnett said.

Putting together the upcoming attempt is a new team of volunteers, with support from Kiwanis of the Farmington-Victor, just west of Rochester.

One Square Mile of Hope is part of a larger festival that continues throughout the day at Arrowhead Park, with a health fair, featuring entertainment and food. The event was named One Square Mile of Hope, because there is about one square mile of Fourth Lake that is within the Town of Inlet. The rest of Fourth Lake is in the Town of Webb. And the “hope” was to raise awareness for the fight against breast cancer, Burnett noted.

The 2024 event has a new cause, but nevertheless, it still inspires hope.

THOUGH THE PRECISE BOUNDARY IS UP for debate, Upstate New York generally refers to the geographic region north of and excluding the New York City metropolitan area. It includes the cities of Albany, Buffalo, Syracuse, and Rochester.

Before European colonization, Upstate New York was populated by several Native American tribes and the home to the Six Nations. Beginning

with the Dutch founding Fort Orange (present-day Albany) in 1624, the land was ceded from the indigenous tribes of the region. By the end of the American Revolutionary War, the land had all but been ceded over to European settlers in the formation of New York and the United States.

The 1825 opening of the Erie Canal across upstate transformed the econ-

omy, greatly increasing movement of goods across the state and ushering in a hotbed of manufacturing to the region during the Second Industrial Revolution.

Due to the vast swathes of ariable rural land, Upstate New York is home to a strong agricultural industry, known for its dairy, maple syrup, apples, and wine.

Spooky walks, haunted houses and eerie hayrides abound this October

When the weather turns cool and the days grow short, line up a few scarily good times for your family at these spooky venues.

The Fright Nights in Syracuse (www.thefrightnights. com, 7 p.m. to 12 a.m., Fridays and Saturdays in October) isn’t just one haunted house. It’s five: Devil’s Dungeon Slide to Hell, The Monster Movie Maintee, Burgen Manor, Lady Lamson’s Cursed Voyage and Penny’s Playhouse. USA Today included Fright Nights in its “Best 20 Haunted Attractions in the Northeast,” so it’s worth planning a trip—if you dare.

Frightmare Farms Haunted Scream Park in Fulton (www.frightmarefarmsny.com, weekends in October) includes a haunted house, creepy labyrinth, and trail. The woodsy setting makes it seem like something lurks behind each tree. Probably because something is.

13th Hour Rising Haunted Hayride in Fulton (7 p.m. to 10 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays in October) was rated a “Top Attraction” for 2022 by NewYorkHauntedHouses.com. Watch out for murderous clowns, chainsaw-wielding madmen and blood-chilling screams in the night.

Casey’s Cottage in Mexico (https://mexicopointpark. com/wp/?page_id=28, by appointment) is the site of a summer dwelling of Dr. William Casey. After his passing in 1978, visitors started sensing an eerie presence on the site, hearing music and voices, along with objects moving seemingly by themselves. Some even noted the appearance of the specter of a girl near a tree near where she was buried. Will you catch a glimpse?

Museum of Wayne County in Lyons (http://waynehistory.ipage. com/Waynehistory/Home.html, by appointment) offers guided tours that tell about William Fee, the convicted murderer hung in the jail in 1860. Does his troubled spirit linger here?

Hose 22 Firehouse in Rochester (www.hose22.com, during business hours) was built in 1916 but closed in 1962 when the fire company moved to a modern facility. The building sat abandoned for 47 years until its restoration in 2007 by a restaurateur.

Current staff report seeing figures on camera that they could not see in person, objects that have been moved in unoccupied rooms and a general sense that they’re not quite alone. After a meal at Hose 22 Firehouse Grill, take a self-guided tour of the original meeting space and bunk rooms outfitted with firefighter equipment. Does the heartbreak and suffering they witnessed still echo on the walls?

Marble Orchard Ghost Walk in Lewiston (www.artcouncil.org/events/ marble-orchard-historic-walks, 7 p.m., Oct. 27-31,) offers a new ghost walk, “Sailors, Soldiers, and Saloons” to tell tales of people who were just passing

through Lewiston but met an unexpected fate. It’s best to bring along a flashlight just in case.

Old Fort Niagara Lantern and Lore Tours (www.oldfortniagara.org/ event/100340/lantern-and-lore-tours, Oct. Fridays and Saturdays 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.) offer a guided walk through the darkened fort complete with ghost stories. The tour is best suited for guests ages 10 and older. The Fort provides guests with a lantern each.

NYS PARKS SYSTEM CELEBRATING 100 YEARS WITH A CHALLENGE

NEW YORK STATE PARKS AND HISTORIC Sites celebrates its centennial in 2024, commemorating the 100th anniversary of the founding of the parks and sites system.

This system “continues to serve as an acknowledgment that public access to open space and recreational assets is a right and not a privilege, afforded to all New Yorkers.”

The public still has time to complete The New York State Parks Centennial Challenge. People are encouraged to visit New York’s state parks and historic sites throughout this year in honor of the 100th anniversary of the state park and historic site system.

The year-long celebratory challenge was announced by Gov. Kathy Hochul late in 2023.

All state residents and visitors can participate. The intent is to boost attendance at state parks, allow the public to learn about the state’s history and give back to parks for the next generation of adventurers, according to the governor’s message.

The Centennial Challenge began at the start of 2024 and includes 100 missions that can be completed at various state parks and historic sites. Participants will need to complete 24 missions throughout 2024 to complete the challenge.

In 1924, Gov. Alfred E. Smith and the State Legislature created the State Council of Parks and voters approved

a $15 million bond act to build and enlarge a network of state parks — forging the state park and historic site system that state residents and visitors know and cherish today, Hochul said in her release.

“There is so much to do within our vast state park system and the Centennial Challenge is a great way to introduce New Yorkers and visitors, alike, to our historic and awe-inspiring properties for 2024’s 100th anniversary celebration,” Hochul said in the release. “Our park system is an incredible place to visit year-round and the Centennial Challenge is a great activity for all who are resolving to have a fun and adventurous New Year.”

The challenge is designed to be completed by people of all abilities and can be finished by visiting parks and historic sites across the state.

Some challenges include activities such as hiking, boating, playing disc golf, ice skating, snowshoeing, visit a new-to-you park or camp at a state park.

People also can volunteer at parks, talk to a forest ranger or talk to an interpreter about the history of a state historic site.

Two of the challenges encourage people to visit the state’s oldest park — Niagara Falls — and state’s oldest historic site — Washington’s Headquarters in Newburgh.

Participants need to complete 24

missions throughout the year in order to complete the challenge. Those who complete it will earn a commemorative sticker and be entered into a promotional giveaway where 24 lucky participants will win a three-year Empire Pass and Centennial merchandise.

For every 10 additional points, participants will receive one additional entry into the promotional giveaway.

The promotional drawing will take place the week of Jan. 13, 2025. Submissions can be mailed in or submitted via the Goosechase app and will be accepted through Jan. 10, 2025.

People can download the Goosechase app onto their phone from the iPhone or Android app store. They can also download a paper checklist sheet off the state park’s Centennial Challenge website.

On the Goosechase app, search for “NY State Parks Centennial Challenge” to join. Once joined, participants can collect points by completing missions right in the app by either taking and uploading photos or videos or submitting an answer to a question.
