From Driver’s Choice Magazine Let’s start with first APNA TRUCK SHOW took place at Langley Events Centre on June 5th and 6th. As you all know APNA TRUCK SHOW has provided the extensive coverage in last few issues and that helped in making this event a great success. More than 5000 people showed up for this show with their families and enjoyed the event. Another trucking event which is on the card is second Annual Saskatoon Show & Shine event at the same location as last year i.e. Husky Truck Stop, Saskatoon (Saskatchewan) by Coast2Coast Business Pages Ltd., parent company of Driver’s Choice Magazine. For more information regarding this event or entry form to enter your truck, please go to pages 16 & 17 of this issue. Take advantage of free registration and transponders for the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure’s (MoTI’s) Weigh2GoBC program that lets participating commercial trucks “check in” electronically along an expanding network of intelligent inspection stations without stopping. If you would like to apply to take part in Weigh2GoBC or need additional information, please call 604-575-3442. There is no deadline for participating in the pilot project, but carriers should register as soon as possible. In case you haven’t received the copy of 2010 edition of Trucker’s Pages or would like one mailed to you, please call us at 1-877-TRUX(8789)-411.

Industry Updates TRAILER SYSTEM FOR MOVING CONTAINERS AND HOUSING Most truckers have something of an adventurous spirit. For some, that goes a little further and for New Zealander Greg Atkinson it meant setting up his own company after 25 years driving. Greg and his Canada-based brother Dennis established Kiwi Global Enterprises in 2008. In New Zealand, there’s something called ‘Kiwi ingenuity’, so named for the national bird, and recognizing a spirit that is willing to give things a go. Kiwi Global started out specializing in truck driver recruitment and placement, but now they’re keen to take on the challenge of exporting trucking technologies to the US and Canada. Greg’s experience in trucking, both in his home country and the US and Canada, has prompted this bold plan. Dennis brings more than 40 years business experience and local knowledge from his west coast Canada home. Greg and Dennis see an opportunity to provide New Zealand’s answer to safe, reliable and productive container lifting, into the US and Canadian markets. The swing lift was first designed in New Zealand in the 1970s, and revolutionized container lifting there. It operates under various names including container handling side lifter, side loader and container lifters. Swing lifts are now the most common method of container lifting in New Zealand and other countries. Kiwi Global plans for them to become a much more frequent sight on Canadian roads. The swing lift operates by unfolding hydraulic legs from the trailer, and literally ‘swinging’ the container off a truck, trailer or rail wagon and onto the ground while the legs operate as stabilizers. With a remote operation function, a load or unload can be completed in as little as 5 minutes by one operator – significantly faster and less labour intensive than traditional methods using cranes or container forklifts. Shorter stop times mean greater productivity and more loads. Greg calls it “playstation stuff” – simple toggles and switches on a remote so with basic training and practice the process is safe and fast. Swing lifts also have a high payload due to low tare weight and the unique horizontal action means no tilting of the container, minimizing risk of damage to the freight. The swing lift can be set up with the centre lift arms folded down below twist lock height to accommodate 10ft, 20ft, 40ft or even 45ft containers. It’s a way to help the industry save time and money - an objective that resoPage 20

Industry Updates nates with both shippers and carriers citing increased efficiency as a common goal. In these times of heightened safety awareness, another factor is the remote function and container strap set up which means the operator is able to stand at a safe distance, in case the container does get a wee ‘swing’ going on. Greg says there is “a bit of an art” to ensuring this doesn’t happen, but if it does, he reckons it’s simply a matter of waiting until it stops, then starting again. The speed and ease of use of the swing lift are expected to be its major selling points - as well as the ability to operate within reasonably confined spaces. A skilled operator can put a container down within 3 inches of a wall. Now that would be a demonstration to see! Because this method of container lifting is now so popular in New Zealand there are a number of companies manufacturing variations on the swing lift concept. Kiwi Global is working in association with Mills-Tui, a successful New Zealand company specializing in the design and manufacture of a range of heavy transport truck and trailer units, fire fighting and other related Hi Tech specialty vehicles. Swing lifts can be custom-designed, built and shipped by Mills-Tui within three months from order placement. Another innovative concept Kiwi Global hope to export could make relocating houses a very different operation in future. Greg understands there is some pressure on the Canadian transport industry by government, to increase the footprint width of house-moving trailers to provide a wider and more stable axle spread of up to 10ft. Combined with the technology already in use in New Zealand, this would mean houses could be moved and kept level on the trailer on inclines of up to 30°. Trailer wheels operate independently, allowing the operator to hydraulically alter heights to achieve additional stability on uneven surfaces with a lift of up to 3.6 metres (11 ½ ft) from ground level. As this allows for clearance at bridges it could make a significant different to the routes viable for relocations, reducing time on the road and subsequently cost. With plenty of plans and ideas for their export strategy, the Kiwi Global team also has the determination and passion to bring them to reality. You might see some of their equipment heading by you soon.
