Spring is on its way and along with it comes a period of renewal. At the same time, professional operators tend to get spring fever and move from company to company looking for what they believe to be bigger and better opportunities. This brings me to the topic of recruiting and retention. In the past few months, I have read many articles on the subject of recruiting and retention and in my opinion it all boils down to the same point. All of us strive to attract and keep good, qualified, safe operators. Here are some suggestions. Communicate : be up front and tell the operators how your company works and what your expectations are. Respect: treat everyone in the manner you would like to be treated, but be firm and direct. Outline the pay package and pay people for the work performed. Every eight weeks we travel for Calgary to Edmonton via Winnipeg, visiting many truck stops along the way. The conversation between operators at the truck stops is always the same. “I didn’t get paid for X or Y and how do I log what they want me to do and stay legal in my book?” There are still truck stop cowboys out there and you will never be able to please them. Those are the operators you can do little about. What we can do is continue to search the market to attract the most professional, competent and safest operators possible , and work hard to retain them. I started this article referencing spring and want to remind everyone that spring is on its way, also bringing with it flash storms. Be prepared. The weather is unpredictable . Do NOT become a statistic! Be careful. Drive to conditions.

SuperTrucks are HERE
n 2009, the US Department of Energy had a bold initiative – develop Class 8 tractor trailers with 50% greater fuel efficiency. When the announcement was first made seven 7 years ago, many were skeptical of whether a task like this could be completed. Fast forward to today, and some manufacturers haven’t just met the requirements, they’ve surpassed them, thanks to their new SuperTrucks. Class 8 trucks haul about 80% of the goods in North America and use about 28 billion gallons of fuel per year in the USA alone. Even though commercial trucks only make up 4% of vehicles on the road, they consume about 20% of the fuel! In order to reduce their reliance on fossil fuels, four teams of truck manufacturers and suppliers began designing and optimizing technologies to increase fuel efficiency and lower carbon emissions. Crews from Cummins & Peterbilt, Freightliner, Navistar, and Volvo began their SuperTruck Programs. So, what makes a Class 8 SuperTruck? Although there’s not an easy or short way of defining them, SuperTrucks utilize the following technologies to increase fuel efficiency (Note: this list is not exhaustive): • Lightweight Materials – Rather than use conventional materials, some of the manufacturers have even implemented carbon fibre to reduce weight. • Highly Engineered Aerodynamic Surfaces – By making enhancements to the bumper, chassis and roof fairings, there is improved air flow under the truck, around the tires and the trailer gap. • Advanced Combustion Engines – Bigger is not always better. Advancements such as turbo compounding improve fuel efficiency while still providing amazing power and torque. • Wide-based Low-rolling Resistance Tires – The right tires on any vehicle make a huge difference in control, fuel economy and ride comfort. Michelin Tires, for example, came up with a new design to increase fuel economy. • Idle Reduction Equipment • Engine Waste Heat Recovery Systems • Long-haul Hybrid Systems
So, the initial nagging question was whether the fuel efficiency targets could be met. The results were staggering. The team of Cummins and Peterbilt built a SuperTruck that gave a 20% increase in engine efficiency, 76% increase in freight efficiency, resulting in a whopping 10.7 miles per gallon average rating! Freightliner, a division of Daimler, had an impressive 115% increase in freight efficiency and averaged 12.2 miles per gallon. The remaining two teams, Navistar and Volvo are also on track to surpass expectations. We had a chance to chat with the Volvo team to gain more in-depth knowledge about their SuperTruck Program. The manufacturer’s PR team also sent some great online materials for our perusal. According to Volvo, their first challenge was to build a tractor trailer combination that had an efficient chassis and was ultra aerodynamic. Rather than using generic materials, carbon fibre was used on the entire roof, hood, and side fairing – not only is carbon much lighter, but it’s also stronger. Volvo is also working on developing new materials with similar properties but at a much lower cost. Next, their SuperTruck partner, Ridge Corp, developed trailer add-on aerodynamic devices made of composite materials in order to meet the desired durability and stiffness without compromising payload capacity. Moving on, rather than using steel, the entire chassis of the SuperTruck is made of aluminum; only the bolts holding it together are steel. Volvo’s aluminum chassis is almost half the weight of traditional steel and has the greatest impact on the vehicle weight. Thanks to a much lower weight and aerodynamic drag, Volvo’s SuperTruck required a lot less engine power. Rather than using the baseline D13 engine, a D11 engine was more than sufficient. This downsizing yielded further weight reduction. Overall, with all these changes, Volvo’s SuperTruck’s weight was reduced by 3,200 pounds. Like Volvo, other manufacturers are using state-ofthe-art technology to make sure their SuperTrucks are impressive. If what we’ve seen so far is any indication, they’ll be more than just impressive. SuperTrucks are here to stay!

Undercutting in Trucking
T
here is competition in every industry, including trucking. A very common way of overcoming competition in trucking is to undercut when bidding for the load. By undercutting, I mean to offer a lower price than your competition for a load. This essentially takes that load away from the competition. Now that the load has been obtained by offering the lower price, has it necessarily made that company any money? Often the end result may not be all it seems. When bidding on a load, there are obvious factors that must be taken in to account to earn money. The distance being travelled, fuel being consumed, any extra insurance costs, extra permit costs, time to load and unload, is there a backhaul, pay to the driver, truck and trailer maintenance etc. These factors must be taken in to account for each load bid on. If the price is too low to make money, why would anyone take a load for a loss? There are companies which are taking loads for a loss, and many in the industry are saying it is these companies which are destroying the current trucking industry today. In BC there was a strike in March of 2014 at Port Metro Vancouver due mostly to pay issues. Rates, unpaid time spent waiting and undercutting were the big issues. Hundreds of millions of dollars worth of cargo was left stranded at the docks during the 28 day dispute. In June 2014 there was a strike threatened again because the pay increases promised from the previous dispute settlement were not being honored which should have taken place on April 3. They were accusing companies of not paying the agreed pay increases all to make a profit. When loads are undercut, there are very few ways to now earn a profit, and often it is at the expense of the truck driver. Pay the driver less so the company can earn a profit. The truck driver is who often suffers the wrath of undercutting. Recently in BC a few trucking companies banded together to undercut each of their loads by $400. I have a few drivers working for one of the companies. They immediately left to go
work elsewhere and so did most of their colleagues. Other trucking companies were lining up to hire the disgruntled truckers. The drivers I know personally who left are hardworking, honest men trying to support their families. As they told me, they cannot provide for their families by staying with a company who agreed to undercut loads and make them pay for it. Running at a loss was not an option for the drivers. I see the pay statements for all of my drivers. I see pay discrepancies on most of them. The rate does not match what the driver has written on their pay envelope. Drivers tell me that they ask for the rate and are sometimes not even told and have to take a load not knowing if they can cover even their fuel costs. Or they ask one day and its one rate, and the next day the same load is a different rate, and their friend at the same company is quoted another rate entirely for the exact same load. I had to deal with a wife of one of my drivers who was crying her eyes out. She was asking why the company couldn’t just pay her husband who risked his life every day driving to feed their family, honestly. He left that company I’m happy to say along with 14 others. Without drivers, you have no business. With competition everywhere, undercutting is not the only way to get a load and to earn a profit. Whether it’s in trucking or in any business, we all have competition. It’s how we deal with that competition that sets us apart. Prompt courteous service and customer service is an excellent tool. Competition helps businesses to build loyalty to your good service. When others offer the same services you do, you must distinguish yourself. Education and innovation are invaluable. See what competitors are doing right and wrong and learn what you can do to make your business that much better. In trucking it’s your drivers who are your service tools. Educate them and work as a team. Learn your core market with the drivers. They’re the one’s seeing everything on a daily basis. Get their feedback and have them participate in the company. When the drivers are happy and involved, and earning a profit, the whole industry earns a profit.

I was so intrigued with what I was watching that by the end of the show I googled Winnipeg and trucking. I should mention that I never drove a 18 wheeler truck before, but this just felt right. My search resulted in 5 responses and one of them was TransX. The rest is history. TransX trained me to become a Professional Truck Driver. TransX supported and guided me all the way through until I became a Canadian Citizen in 2016. I can’t thank TransX enough for the role they have played in my life. I started with TransX as a Company Driver, later became an Owner Operator and since 2012, I have had the pleasure to work as a Driver Recruiter. Alberta Motor Transport Association (AMTA) gains momentum with rebrand February 24, 2017 – As the connectors, the movers, the carriers, the pulse and the guardians of the highway the Alberta Motor Transportation has changed its brand to better reflect our image and to better serve our members, and the public. “We felt we were in need of a refresh to reflect today’s AMTA,” said AMTA President Lorraine Card. “Our old brand was looking dated, so the refresh is more modern with clean lines and a different colour scheme. The orange and gray to help us standout as a safety advocate for the transportation industry, but we still stand for the same values we always have.” In 2015, the AMTA made the decision to make a change from the association’s traditional blue logo, and narrowed five RFPs to FREE Branding and Digital out of Edmonton. “The AMTA wanted its brand to have a more modern, progressive appeal with a broader audience, especially newcomers and young workers looking to break into the commercial transportation industry,” said FREE president Chris Bolivar. “If you understand what sets you apart, and why you exist, you’ll have much more meaningful interactions with your audiences (and employees).” The rebrand started with the soft launch of the new AMTA website in November, and since then has been well received by members. The rebrand will culminate with an official launch at the AMTA Leadership Conference and AGM in Banff April 28-29.
