EDITOR’S NOTE | sMpwdkI

BEGIN WITH THE FINAL GOAL IN MIND More so than ever, these words hold true today. March 2021 marks one year since the world was exposed to the Covid-19 pandemic and although this generation was treading into uncharted medical territory, medical professionals and nations’ decision makers began with one goal in mind – the end of the pandemic, safely and securely. Today, we are seeing that the end is near, with various vaccinations being delivered to nations across the world. In the trucking industry, the past year also meant leaps and bounds into the electrification of heavy trucks and again, engineers and designers had one goal in mind – to find alternate ways of reducing the industry’s carbon footprint on our precious planet. And today, we see the fruits of their labour, with almost every manufacturer beginning to deliver electrified trucks.

From the common person to a businessperson to a world leader, the process is still the same; you must begin every task or ambition with a clear goal in mind. Then, take the necessary steps to plan how to achieve that goal. Writing down your goal and the steps to achieve it is a crucial and vital part of the process because it allows you to see the progress and make changes where and when necessary. This second issue of 2021 provides many important articles and items that pertain to the transport industry today, especially on some major advancements in technology.

As we head into Spring, we look forward to the beginning of the end of the Covid-19. Communities across the world have come together in the past year, because we knew that the goal, the end of the pandemic, was and is near.

Voice Memo here’s never been a time in history before when the phrase “there’s an app for that” means if you can think about it, there’s someone who has already created an app to do it. If there isn’t an app to do what you need done, then get hold of an app programmer and get one made. If you need it, then others will need it too. Seems the world is being run by apps, short for applications, and back in the day, we called them programs. There are apps written specifically for the trucking industry that must count well into the hundreds. Apps for logging hours of service is about to become quite critical and not just a “nice to have” but a

genuine “absolutely necessity”. The Canadian Ministry of Transportation has made electronic logging mandatory effective June 12, 2021. Be sure you get the right electronic logging app that best meets your needs and complies with the regulations and also complies with US regulations. There will be no excuses, we’ve had many years to find the right app to meet the specific needs of government compliance. XYpper.com is a load searching app that finds your loads for you rather than you spending hours searching through load boards and sorting through the cheap paying loads from well-paying loads, then missing out because the load board NATIONAL MAGAZINE

wasn’t updated. XYpper finds the available loads based on the criteria you have chosen with respect to your location and where you want to be. Not only that, it will advise you along the way if there’s top up freight that you could accept without going off route. Look for this particular app to bring some exciting add-ons that will make your trucking business easier and get paid faster. The Hours of Service apps and load searching apps are the obvious, but there are many many apps that have trucking applications where it’s not quite so obvious. There are a dearth of mapping apps out there to help with your trip planning and laying out routes that make the most sense for your pick-up and delivery. These apps can and do zero you in on the exact address of that pick-up or delivery. The app tells you the driving time based on optimum speed limits and ideal weather conditions with no interruptions such as eating, sleeping, personal care, wrecks, construction delays, or just plain traffic congestion. These apps are great guides, simplifying the route planning exercise, saving hours of calculating. These apps, however, should never override common sense. Look for those mapping apps that are more truck centric. These are ones that point out things like low over passes, points those roads where trucks are not allowed, and other situations that concern truckers. There are more than a few such routing apps that are worthy of a few dollars. There are apps that can help you find a place to park when that time is necessary. Sometimes there are highway signs that forewarn of parking availability but also the information is on your device through an available app. Other important apps the trucker finds critical are the weather apps. Being able to predict weather related problems along the way or even better being able to find routing around weather events can make the trucker’s life so much easier. There’s actually an app out there that lets you do a vehicle inspection, with pictures for verification. So, when you get an authoritarian with the power to write you up, then you can prove it wasn’t broken when you did your daily vehicle inspection. Maybe some developers could spend some time creating more daily vehicle inspection apps with ever better ways of proving efficient inspections. The one of which I’m aware is: https://www.zonarsystems.com/ If the government can demand Hours of Service apps be uneditable, then why don’t drivers insist on an inspection app that proves they did it and have pictures to prove it with uneditable date and time stamps. Voice Memo Apps. While this app certainly wasn’t designed with the trucker in mind, it certainly has application. Record that voice interaction between yourself and one of the many authoritarians with whom you might interact. Record the interaction with shippers and receivers. The world is becoming a “CYA” litigious world. Technology can protect you in so many ways. Often times, capturing video of an incident isn’t going to work. Measurement Apps. There’s a few great measuring apps where your device accurately can measure things for you. These apps are superb for those hauling loads that are not enclosed within a specified box. Calculator apps. There isn’t a trucker alive that doesn’t need a calculator. These are wonderful apps for your device. Invoicing. There are apps that allow the creation of company invoices, where the invoice can be created and sent to the customer online while the service is being completed. Again, designed so you can get paid quicker. Hazmat informer. Yes, there’s an app that will provide all the hazmat information required for the movement of hazardous materials, what signage is required, the special handling required, even whether or not you have to stop at scales for paper checks. Excellent, especially if you only occasionally haul hazmat and different types of hazmat. Police scanner. There’s police scanner apps available. These can be invaluable, especially in getting immediate first-hand information about police actions close by, like progress with respect to wrecks. Health. Everybody is concerned with staying fit in what can be a sedentary job. Certainly, driving is more cerebral than physical for most drivers but certainly the medium and long haulers. Some people do better when they have an app that works them through exercises specifically designed for drivers. Most smart phone devices have heartbeat monitors, activity trackers with reminders to get active. These health apps shouldn’t be overlooked. Scanner. There are apps that allows your device to scan and consolidate paperwork so it can be electronically forwarded to head office. The ability to quickly get the invoicing process started, means payment is quicker and cash flows smoother. Document signing. The ability of devices to capture signatures electronically on shipping documents is necessary in the speeding up of the administration process. Some of these apps overlap or perform tasks slightly differently, while some are incorporated into larger apps that accomplish many tasks all with minimal input at the driver level. Some apps will have advertisement clips that pop up and may be a bit annoying, but most don’t. The developers have to recoup their efforts somehow. Some apps have other ways the app developers can get paid. Some apps like XYpper is free to download, the developer is paid from those posting loads to the system and at any given moment there is around 300,000 to 600,000 loads available. It’s free then for the driver to download and use. Then other apps you buy online to download. Apps like the electronic logging devices and specialty mapping programs are purchased outright for downloading, updates, may or may not be included. All this information would be available within that list of conditions nobody reads but agrees. You have devices inside your truck that have more computing power that the first main frame had that was a city block large. Use those apps that solve your problems as safely as possible. Distracted driving is a crime. MARCH - APRIL 2021

Apps he smartphone is now an essential on-the-road tool for any professional trucker. With that said, there are many reasons why you should be using one -especially when it will make the job a little easier. Whether you’re searching the nearest gas station or rest stop, to planning the best and safest route, there are copious amounts of trucking apps that can help deliver loads safely, efficiently, and on schedule.

T

Here is a list of some of the best apps for trucking in 2021: 1. GasBuddy The GasBuddy app is effective at finding the cheapest gas prices and diesel prices from the best gas stations near you. Pizza

Blaze Pizza

y friend called me and said his buddy went to a pizza place that was like a Subway and you could build your own pizza with all the toppings you want for a set price. So, I agreed to go check this place out. Blaze Pizza has two locations in BC, South Surrey and West Vancouver and has financial backing from Lebron James. We went to South Surrey on a Friday night. Your first step is to select your crust. They had original, high rise, keto, cauliflower. The high rise stated it was almost 1200 calories, so seeing that it seemed extremely high in calories, so we both chose original crust. The crust was very strange looking. Scary I would say. Perfectly round and shiny and a perfect

ring in it. It seemed very artificial but the website says it’s made fresh and ferments for 24 hours so it’s light and airy. Next you choose your sauce. We both chose spicy tomato sauce. It was a lot hotter than expected, so I would never order spicy again. I would recommend the regular tomato sauce. Then you get to choose your toppings. There are a variety of pizzas you can just order, but build your own was what we came for. There are a wide variety of meats, cheeses and vegetables to choose from. The staff have been clearly trained to put a miniscule amount on. I was actually laughing watching my over 6 foot tall, 250+ pound friend saying over and over, “More Cheese! More pepperoni!” Asking for more 3-4 times seemed to

get about the right amount. I do know someone in an American pizza chain similar to Blaze who confirmed the staff had been told to cut down on toppings. Specifically instead of 16 pepperoni slices, put only 10. Less toppings = more profit, especially in struggling times like Covid. There was a new item on the menu. Cheesy bread. We decided to order that too. I noticed while choosing my toppings that there was only one booth remaining, so I went over to secure it. I had to walk past everyone else sitting and eating. I felt very uncomfortable because they were all eating and obviously not wearing masks. Also no one had cleaned my booth and no one was cleaning ANY booths. Luckily I had wipes and sanitizer NATIONAL MAGAZINE

and cleaned it myself. Unfortunately our booth was beside the only napkin dispenser. So everyone got up not wearing a mask, came and got napkins about two feet away. It was a Covid nightmare! My friend is extremely high risk and I actually started to panic. I will NEVER dine in ever again because it was not a safe environment. My friend had to walk back and forth between all the diners to go get our orders as I kept cleaning and disinfecting. When we sat down to eat our cheesy bread I wasn’t impressed. It came with marinara sauce for dipping. It wasn’t anything

NATIONAL MAGAZINE

great so I went to my pizza. It was so spicy I could hardly eat it. So I had to use the lackluster cheesy bread to cool my mouth down. The crust on the cheesy bread and pizza were not very flavorful. It was crisped nicely in the oven but I didn’t like black bits all over my fingers. The only thing I liked was the speed. The pizza was ready in a couple of minutes. I ended up taking half of my pizza home. My friend liked it and said he would go back. I wouldn’t go to Blaze Pizza if I’m craving pizza. I would only go if say I’m out shopping and need a quick bite. There is much better pizza out

there. But since their Covid plan really put us at risk, I feel my whole experience was overshadowed by panic. I did eat the other half of the pizza at home in a safe environment, and still wasn’t impressed. But I did use the leftover marinara sauce from the cheesy bread. I put in on a pizza that I made myself a few days later. My own pizza was much better, with lots of cheese and all the meat I wanted. No being cheap at my home. 2433 161A St, Unit #50, Surrey, BC V3Z 0M6

Being Responsible Don’t expect to make the money you made two years ago. It will not happen. Change your expectations to match the pandemic.

18

MARCH - APRIL 2021

rucking is slow. We all know that. Most businesses have slowed due to Covid. But behaving in a responsible manner is still of utmost importance. People are frustrated everywhere, but behaving erratically and irresponsibly is uncalled for. To get through Covid, we all must work together. Those who work against us, only make the battle that much harder and will draw this virus out that much longer. Changing jobs over and over is not being responsible. There are many truckers who keep moving from one employer to another in hopes of earning more income. I know one driver who changed his job five times in less than a year! I understand this is desperation and people need money to pay bills. But moving so much makes you appear disloyal and irresponsible. Who will hire this person when there are costs and training involved and that will all be lost if the person leaves in two months? A bank will view this constant movement poorly if you need to apply for a loan. How will you commit to a monthly payment for years when you cannot commit to a job? No magic company out there has endless work for its drivers during a pandemic. If you have zero loads, obviously you must go elsewhere to seek work, but do your research and talk to friends etc. and go somewhere where you get steady work and stay there. Don’t expect to make the money you made two years ago. It will not happen. Change your expectations to match the pandemic. Many lease operators and companies are walking away from equipment they have on lease. They dump the equipment wherever they feel like it, throw the keys and walk away. That is not being responsible. If the payment cannot be made, then call your bank and let them know. Work with the bank if you can, or try to sell it yourself. List it online and try to take the burden off. If you walk away,

T

you will destroy your credit for the next seven years. I used to do collections, and I was often able to help someone who was honest and told me the truth. Walking away will not solve your problems, it will be the beginning of major credit issues and possibly being sued. Be responsible and pick up the phone and tell the bank the truth. If you do return the equipment, make the arrangements for drop off properly with the bank first. Truckers are exempt from quarantine rules when crossing the border. Don’t take that as a license to go anywhere you like when you get home from a cross border trip. Be responsible and stay at home. There are literally millions of exemptions being granted to truckers not requiring mandatory quarantine. Truckers are being granted this privilege because they are essential. We need you! We also need you to stay at home when not on the road so you don’t get sick or infect others. Don’t become a super spreader! So please do the responsible thing and stay at home when you get back from a trip so you can continue providing your essential services to Americans and Canadians. Business has definitely changed during the pandemic. I see so many trucks driving by empty. Truckers and people everywhere are upset they cannot make ends meet. People outside the profession “think” truckers are SO busy but it is just not the case. The lack of loads and lack and money have been driving people to be stressed and agitated. As truckers, you are essential to everyone. Truckers are finally being appreciated and respected for all their hard work. I hope that now that the spotlight is shining on our industry, that everyone will be responsible for their actions. It may be hard sometimes, but remember we are all human beings with problems and emotions. We cannot control how others behave, but we can control ourselves. So be responsible for yourself. Trucking Shows

Future MICHAEL HOWE

The Future of

Trucking Shows (And Other Events)

here is little argument that the world has changed tremendously since early 2020 and is likely to never be quite the same. That’s right, the world is searching for the overused saying, “a new normal.” The trucking industry is, of course, no different than the rest of the world. With commerce and trade being impacted as it has, the trucking industry is navigating those changes as best it can in an attempt to not only make sure the wheels keep turning, but to also find opportunities to bring the industry together. Truck shows have always been a popular way to do this, but what is the future of those high volume in person events? A myriad of truck show cancellations in 2020 led most event organizers to look forward to 2021. The vaccine was on the horizon, the political rhetoric would ramp up but perhaps subside, and people could find ways to hold successful events. Unfortunately, it looks like 2021 will come and go without the typical slate of truck shows.

22 MARCH - APRIL 2021

Here’s a quick look at what some of the truck shows in Canada and the US are doing in 2021: Truck World, Toronto, ON The 2020 Truck World Show, originally scheduled for April 2020, and rescheduled twice later, was ultimately cancelled all together. In a letter to exhibitors, show organizers Newcom president Joe Glionna and Hannover Fairs CEO Larry Turner, wrote, “While we are disappointed that we cannot produce Truck World this year we are eager to start working on the show for 2022 where we will focus on rebuilding and reconnecting the trucking industry in Canada.” The next show is currently scheduled for April 21-23, 2022. https://www.truckworld.ca/ ExpoCam 2021, Espace Saint-Hyacinthe, Montreal, QC, September 22-23, 2021 As of this writing, ExpoCam 2021 is still scheduled, and it is far enough down the road that it will likely be a few months before we know if it will be impacted again Note, these dates are a reschedule from May1315, so the situation is ever evolving. https://www.expocam.ca/ NATIONAL MAGAZINE

APNA Truck Show, Abbotsford, BC Yet another casualty of the pandemic, the 2020 show was cancelled and there is no indication as to when the next show will be scheduled. Per an announcement on the show’s website, there is a chance 2021 will see a show, but perhaps not. “There is a strong possibility of postponing the show to the fall of 2021 or to June 2022, depending on how the pandemic situation goes.” https://apnatruckshow.com/ Mid-America Trucking Show, Louisville, KY Show organizers are currently looking at dates for the 50th Anniversary of MATS – and that is a big year, so they will want to do this show the right way. Like 2020, there will not be a MATS in 2021. The next show is currently scheduled for March 24-26, 2022. According to a February 2021 media release, “These dates ensure the full support of our industry at an uncompromised, largescale, in-person event that meets our shared goals and delivers the caliber of show that we have all come to expect from MATS.” https://www.truckingshow.com/ Great American Trucking Show, Dallas, TX Show organizer Randall-Reilly took portions of the 2020 show virtual, and plan to do the same in 2021. According to a statement on the show’s website, “After weighing the many considerations that go into an event of the size and scope of the Great American Trucking Show, Randall-Reilly has made the difficult decision to not produce the in-person show in 2021. In light of the ongoing

NATIONAL MAGAZINE

COVID situation, conditions simply remain too uncertain to move forward.” No future in-person show dates are scheduled at this time. https://www.truckshow.com/ National Heavy Equipment Show, Toronto, ON A show that is typically held in odd years has been cancelled for 2021. The good news, however, is that it is rescheduled for March 31 – April 1, 2022. “While we looked at options to sustain the future of the event, it became clear that spring 2022 was our best option for this edition,” said Mark Cusack, Show Manager. “This is a timeframe which has historically worked best for exhibitors and attendees. Our main priority is positioning the event for a safe and successful return, and this decision reflects that.” http://www. nhes.ca/ Wolcott Truckers Jamboree, Wolcott, IA, July 8-10, 2021 After a virtual event in 2020, this event remains scheduled for 2021. https://iowa80truckstop.com/trucker-jamboree/ The reality is that there continues to be great uncertainty around events in 2021, but with vaccines perhaps 2022 will look a lot more like what we are accustom to. As we look at 2021 though, one need look no further than the empty hockey arenas, empty basketball arenas, and other empty or sparsely attended major events to see we are still a ways out from returning to the “new normal” – though based on future event schedules, there is room for optimism.

MY RIDE

SANDEEP GILL

TheLincolnAviator ccasionally you see a car and it exudes a certain character or feeling. You see a Lamborghini and you think speed and aggression, you see a 1960’s Bentley or Rolls Royce and you instantly imagine class and royalty. I had the good fortune of being in New York in 2019 when Lincoln unveiled the new Aviator, classic aviation design, picture the sweeping designs of 1940’s and 1950’s aircrafts, this was Lincoln’s design motif. With almost exact adherence to the prototype, the production Aviator exudes the graceful elegance of its inspirational aircraft and provides Lincoln’s promise of effortless power. In an industry that has essentially moved to the manufacturing of SUV’s, even more so the case with Ford and Lincoln, it has become increasingly difficult for manufacturers to create something unique. With most companies attempting to differentiate themselves by creating razor sharp, aggressive track machines, think BMW X5M, Mercedes AMG GLE 63. The Aviator brings a novel approach to the equation. The reality of most SUV lifespans will be to haul its occupants from one urban locale to another, tackle the seasonal snowstorm or blizzard and maybe tackle the gravel road of the summer campground. Maybe it’s my age speaking, but the goal behind the majority of these tasks is to provide the driver and passengers with an environment of comfort and relaxation. It should be a place to shut out the hustle and bustle of the world when the door closes. The Aviator’s response is “Challenge Accepted”. The Aviator sits in a unique SUV segment. The sub full size luxury three-row SUV segment is not occupied by many viable players. However, this segment is garnering an extreme amount of activity. As minivans begin to disappear and the full-size segment brings a degree of gigantism that does not fit well with the local mall or strip mall, buyers are more and more drawn to the third row SUV. Combined with this, an upward movement of upper middle-class buyers that desire the luxury they have well-earned and deserve and the recipe for Aviator comes to life. Mercedes for 2020 have introduced a third row on their GLE and introduced a new three row compact SUV in the GLB. So how does the Aviator overcome the luxury three row SUV challenge? Let’s start with a rear-wheel drive architecture, for proper driving dynamics. Add to this a combination of turbo charged and hybrid power trains. Lastly, endow the vehicle with the best that technology

O

NATIONAL MAGAZINE

can offer (i.e., physiotherapist designed massaging seats, 30-way adjustment, Revel® Ultima 3D Audio System to name a few). It also doesn’t hurt to wrap the package in arguably one of the prettiest SUV skins out there. It really is one of the nicest looking SUVs in the market. The heart of the Aviator comes courtesy of a 3.0-liter V6 engine, paired with a new 10-speed SelectShift® automatic transmission. The result is 400 glorious horsepower and 415 lb-ft of effortless torque. This, as tested setup is ample for any requirements with up to 6,700 lbs of towing capacity, the weekend getaway with the boat is not a worry. Need more? Look to the Aviator Grand Touring, which adds an electric hybrid system. The result is a class leading 494 combined bhp and mind boggling combined 630 lb-ft of oomph. The hybrid system only adds to Lincoln’s goal of providing a whisper quiet, sanctuary like environment with effortless power. To allow for your new sanctuary to remain unsettled, the Aviator uses a suite of suspension and body control systems to constantly adjust and modify the ride to your environment. These include Adaptive Suspension which constantly monitors vehicle motion, body movement, steering, acceleration and braking activities. The system reads the road 500 times per second and can automatically prompt setting adjustments up to 100 times per second. The suspensions advanced pothole mitigation can sense when a wheel is dropping into a severe dip and stiffens the shock absorber to reduce the amount of drop, lessening the harshness of a tire strike. Each wheel responds independently, allowing the vehicle to tailor its response to any given road surface. The system also utilizes Air Glide Suspension, which uses air springs that can adjust to pre-set limits and also automatically adjust to provide better ground clearance when required and aerodynamics at speed. Lincoln also endows the Aviator with a combination of driver aids. The most advanced of these is Lincoln’s semiautonomous system called Co-Pilot Assist360 Plus. The system provides for collision avoidance, reverse braking and Active park assist. The result is easily Lincoln’s most engaging vehicle. Despite its size and nearly 2,500 kg curb weight, the Aviator handles impeccably. Twisty roads produce limited body roll and a continued composed ride. 0-60 comes in 6 seconds flat and can reach the 5 second mark in hybrid trim. That’s mighty fast for a vehicle of this size and is a thrilling exercise.

ROAD SAFETY AT WORK

Your People Are Your Greatest Asset ssets” are, by definition, valuable. When something is valuable, it needs to be protected and kept safe. Smart and caring employers know that their most valuable assets are their employees, who they are also responsible for protecting. In the trucking industry, most of the people “assets” are truck drivers. Sadly, truck drivers accounted for almost 1/3 of workrelated motor vehicle crashes between 2015 and 2019 according to WorkSafeBC data. Truck drivers also had the highest rate of traumatic workplace fatalities of all occupations during that fiveyear period. This data tells us truck drivers need more protection than the average worker. Truck drivers can and should expect to get home safely at the end of their work day. Prevention is the key to getting drivers home safely because motor vehicle crashes are preventable. There are simple, specific steps employers, supervisors and drivers can take to prevent crashes.

A

2. The Driver Fatigue tool kit provides information about addressing fatigue. Consider that fatigue can be both physical and mental. Mental fatigue reduces driver alertness, focus, attentiveness and decision-making ability in ways that reduce drivers’ ability to safely perform key driving functions. Road Safety At Work offers other tools and resources, along with online workshops, webinars and advisory services to help businesses address their road safety challenges and protect their people assets.

People

First, check to make sure drivers are qualified for the work they’re expected to do: 1. Regularly confirm drivers are legally authorized to drive by checking their driver abstracts. For the trucking industry, this is not only practical, it’s a legal annual obligation. And, it’s easy. Visit ICBC.com to make an online request. 2. Confirm new drivers are competent and capable of operating the vehicle combinations and transporting the loads assigned to them, and of driving the terrain their routes take them through. It also pays to check on the skills and habits of veterans, too. For more information on how to do this, use Road Safety At Work’s Driver Qualification tool kit (RoadSafetyAtWork.ca/Tool-Kits) Second, consider that two of the most frequent causes of motor vehicle crashes are distraction and fatigue. To address these issues at your workplace, consult these two additional tool kits, both found at RoadSafetyAtWork.ca/Tool-Kits: 1. The Distracted Driving tool kit provides resources to help implement policies and practices to reduce driving distractions. Remember that distraction for truck drivers is typically more complex than for most drivers. It’s not just as simple as forbidding the use of a cell phone. It can mean changing operational rules like when and how the dispatcher communicates with the driver. 36 MARCH - APRIL 2021

Michelin Introduces New Energy Tires ichelin North America, Inc., is launching the MICHELIN® X® Multi Energy Z2 tire ─ the fuelefficient, traction and mileage performance standard for regional and super-regional applications –to the replacement market. The MICHELIN® X® Line Energy T2 tire ─ Michelin’s most fuel-efficient dual trailer tire1 to date for the long-haul and truckload market ─ will be available to order on April 1. “Michelin is constantly innovating to provide fleets with fuel-efficient tire solutions for both long haul and regional applications,” said Adam Murphy, vice president of B2B marketing, Michelin North America. “We strive to balance driver safety and satisfaction while decreasing operating costs. These new MICHELIN Energy products deliver improved tread wear, mileage performance and traction for increased driver confidence and comfort to deliver their loads safely and on time during this challenging time in the trucking industry.”

navigates on-ramps and turns and has better wet braking to stop safely, especially in wet conditions when worn than leading competitors3,4. The MICHELIN X Multi Energy Z2 tire is engineered with a dual compound tread. It is available in two tire sizes: 11R22.5 LRG and 295/75R22.5 LRH.

Michelin MICHELIN X Line Energy T2

MICHELIN X Multi Energy Z2 The MICHELIN X Multi Energy Z2 tire is designed for lessthan-truckload and multiple-stop delivery fleets that run 300-500 miles per day. This includes dry van, less-than-truckload, food and beverage and pickup and delivery fleets that require a longlasting tire that performs well in medium scrub environments as well as on the highway. This directional steer tire is designed to improve resistance to irregular wear for more miles. It is SmartWay®-compliant and GHG2 approved into 2027 2. Available for fleets in the United States and Canada, the tire sets new industry standards in fuel efficiency, traction and mileage performance for super-regional and regional applications. This performance is achieved through its regenion tread sculpture that enhances rolling resistance, improves mileage performance and enhances water evacuation. The tire safely NATIONAL MAGAZINE

The X Line Energy T2, meets SmartWay® requirements5 and is targeted for the dry van truckload and less-than-truckload, refrigerated, tanker and flatbed fleet segments. The product is designed for improved wear, fuel savings, retreadability and exceptional traction. The tread incorporates micro-sipes on all rib edges and a broad, optimized contact patch. Both features contribute to better wear. The MICHELIN X LINE ENERGY T2 tire has better wet stopping traction when new and worn than two leading competitor tires6. The dual-compound tread consists of a mileage top layer that controls tread stiffness and stress to reduce irregular wear and a fuel-efficient bottom layer that minimizes internal casing temperatures for low rolling resistance. Curb guards and upper sidewall ribs help fight sidewall damage providing excellent retreadability. “Trailer tires generally suffer from irregular wear and are often subject to poor air pressure maintenance,” continues Murphy. “This forgotten tire/wheel position is susceptible to variable loads. The new X Line Energy T2 has been designed to address these concerns.”

“Michelin is constantly innovating to provide fleets with fuel-efficient tire solutions for both long haul and regional applications.”

WABCO MAXXUS™ 2.0 from ZF – Performance, Safety, Driver Confidence Make Them the Future of Air Disc Brakes f you’re interested in maintaining a fleet and increasing uptime, if you’re interested in safety and performance advantages, and if you’re interested in maximizing the comfort and confidence of drivers, you should be interested in air disc brake (ADB) technology. If you are an owner-operator, your interests are the same; and in addition, your personal pride in ownership leads you to seek the best for your truck. With fewer moving parts, more heat dissipation and easier maintenance, ADBs have a longer life than traditional drum brakes. And they have other advantages – they can enable shorter stopping distances and can provide more stable braking.

I

WABCO MAXXUS™ 2.0, the future of ADBs The commercial vehicle industry has been rapidly adopting ADBs, moving away from traditional drum and wedge brakes, for all these reasons and because they also can provide excellent driver comfort and the precision needed for today’s advanced driving features. ADBs are the future of braking; and the WABCO MAXXUS™ 2.0 product line from ZF, is at the forefront of ADB technology. WABCO MAXXUS™ 2.0 – its 5th generation – is the result of more than 20 years of innovation and experience in single-piston ADBs. WABCO MAXXUS™ 2.0 features comparable output force to double-piston technology. Its redesigned active taper wear mitigation system ensures even pressure distribution on the brake pad surface resulting in even pad wear. Combine that with its 65% fewer parts* than double-piston designs, that means reduced weight, and can mean less maintenance as well. Additionally, the use of redundant seals on both the guide pin and piston boot help ensure internal components are protected from dirt and debris damage; making for reliable brake solutions, optimized for advanced protection and increased uptime. If you need an even lighter variant, there is WABCO MAXXUS™ L2.0 – the lightest truck ADB available in North America. † Weighing just 67 lbs., it is more than four pounds lighter than the closest North American competing ADB, which translates to a weight advantage of up to 24 pounds per vehicle. And – it offers the same updated features and high-quality performance as the WABCO MAXXUS 2.0. Driver confidence and comfort, improved safety and uptime Driver confidence and comfort can be keys to increase uptime and improve vehicle safety. In addition to the confidence provided by shorter braking distances. With less chatter and virtually no pulling or fading, WABCO MAXXUS 2.0 provide more consistent 40 MARCH - APRIL 2021

WABCO performance, even in extreme downhill or wet road conditions. All of which can combine to provide greater comfort and improved driver response. WABCO MAXXUS 2.0 can also make contributions to vehicle safety through its advanced mechanism that continuously adjusts to maintain an optimal running clearance – even in extreme conditions - while minimizing the risk of hot runners. Helping support drivers’ confidence and comfort is part of the ZF commitment to maximize vehicle uptime and operational efficiency whether you are maintaining a fleet or you are an owner-operator. That commitment includes a comprehensive aftersales support network of more than 5,000 distribution points equipped to help serving you every mile of the way. Our growing distribution network help ensuring you will get the parts you need – when you need them. WABCO MAXXUS™ 2.0 single-piston ADBs from ZF can be a critical part of braking systems, through innovations that include fewer moving parts, lighter weight, and higher reliability. Commercial vehicle fleet operators and owner-operators increasingly recognize that an investment in WABCO MAXXUS 2.0 is an investment in both driver and vehicle performance and safety.
