Editor’s Note / sMpwdkI ADAPTATION IS NECESSARY The year 2020 has not been what anyone expected it to be. For most, it was going to be another year, with ambitions to do better, fulfill those New Year resolutions, and for others, correct errors and make personal changes to improve their professional and personal lives. Sadly, all of these were put on hold because of Covid-19.

Jag Dhatt

When the news was first revealed of some closures, many thought nothing of Covid-19 except it would pass quickly. However, as of today, roughly two months since major closures took place, there is no real end in sight. Everyone is hoping that soon, life will resume somewhat back to normal.

Speaking of life, we can be assured that Covid-19 will have dramatic changes in how we socialize, congregate, and behave in every day situations. But rest assured, things will get better. During these times, we must send our heart-felt thanks to front-line and first responders, who have gone out of their way to bring the best possible care during this pandemic. In the same breath, we must send our thanks and gratitude to truckers, who selflessly continued to work under gruelling conditions to ensure that the North American economy kept going. These truckers faced hardships that were unheard of before, from not having the ability to eat at a restaurant to not having washroom privileges when needed. Thanks to some corporations, some conditions for truckers are improving. We at JGK Media Inc. have had to adapt to the changes brought about by Covid-19. Rather than focusing on print, more efforts have been placed on our digital platforms, to ensure our visitors get the necessary information as quickly as possible. In addition, we have started a daily TV program, called Hello Trucking, heard online every weekday from 6:30 to 7:00pm PST. This program is broadcast on Facebook and YouTube – search for Team Punjabi to watch live. Covid-19 has also brought out the compassionate side of humanity, where people have helped others. We’ve adapted and in my opinion, society will become better and stronger. From us to you, please stay safe.

COVID-19 And

Trucking

T

his COVID-19 virus has created a lot of fear world-wide. Having been declared a pandemic has exacerbated that fear; but there are many positives that have been recognized and expounded upon that are truly inspiring. While some front-line workers are easily recognized as front liners, medical personnel, first responders, those caring for the old and infirmed and efforts to properly equip them is a foregone conclusion as to need, others less recognized as front liners aren’t. Truck drivers, like it or not, are front line workers and proper precautions must be equivalent to those other front liners. Truck drivers need masks and gloves, personal protective equipment (PPE) that are changed out after each job, after each contact with another human. One truck driver mentioned the company for which they worked provided one mask and five pair of nitrile gloves per week. Obviously, this company expects the equipment to be used over and over. This type of rationing serves no purpose. Wearing the masks and gloves constantly, even when not necessary, isn’t conducive to safe, sanitary conditions. If carriers won’t supply their drivers and owner operators with proper PPE and in the quantities necessary, then drivers and 10

MAY - JUNE 2020

owner operators must take care of their own needs to ensure their own, and their family and friends’ safety. The other issue is proper and safe disposal of the used protective equipment. In reality, the disposal of the protective equipment must be done in accordance with normal procedures for hazardous materials. Set aside a plastic bag specifically for the disposal of your used protective equipment and dispose of it properly as the availability of such disposal facility is at hand. Recently, a Canadian truck driver fell ill with COVID-19, while returning to Canada but still deep in the United States. This driver had no idea if he’d be allowed to drive, how to cross into Canada with such diagnosis, no idea on whether to quarantine in place with no ability to do so. How would the load be delivered if they quarantined in place. And another myriad of questions running through many drivers’ minds. They were extremely concerned not only for their own safety but of those around them. In his own words, “I reached out to four different regional public health units. Each one had tried to find me information, but it ended up resulting in several more calls that ended in dead ends. I tried calling hotels and paying out of my pocket, but I didn’t have a credit card to do so.”

“So here I was on my way home, sick, emotional, frustrated, alone, scared, and in full panic mode after waiting 21 hours for a back haul (without a layover pay at that) I kept repeating in my head ‘what am I going to do’.” “I reached out to Shelley (Uvanile-Hesch) from the Woman’s Trucking Federation of Canada as a last resort to see if she had heard of any drivers falling ill while on the road and what they did to keep their family safe. This move turned out to be a life saver. The amount of support I received from this woman will never be forgotten.” “She contacted Transport Canada, who contacted the CBSA, who reached out to me. The CBSA was able to clear my load the day before I got there. I emailed a copy of my AC1, they stamped it and emailed it back. I was told what booth to go to, and when I rolled up to the booth, they just waved me through.” “When I explained to Shelley I was getting nowhere with public health or the hospital, she said let me reach out to a few of my contacts and I will see what I can do. Don’t worry, we will figure something out.” “She called Doug Ford on his cell phone, who took time out of his Good Friday during these trying times to help out a sick truck driver who couldn’t find any support NATIONAL MAGAZINE

and got things done within minutes. He had the Ministry of Health call Shelley and they called me directly. They provided me with a place to stay, food, medication, and a nurse on site to monitor my symptoms.”

gears. There’s a lot of knowing who is going to be your best bet for solving whatever problem faced. He who is unprepared for the unknown owes it to himself to ask the right questions to become prepared.

This specific situation was later brought to the attention of Infrastructure Health and Safety Association, Fleet Safety Council with the view of developing a “best practices” solution for this particular problem.

The human cause has never previously experienced a complete and utter shut down of the economy of the world to cope with a pandemic, yet that’s what our health advisers have had our politicians do. It’s never been done to this point and only the debriefing exercise will determine what was done correctly and what wasn’t. No question, those powers that be will look to the COVID-19 experience for future calamities.

Shelley and the Board of Directors of WTFC must be part of the discussion group that will be founded to come up with these “emergency protocols” because she’s walked the walk. She’s solved the problem and is probably one of the few who will have the experience to offer the right guidance. The point is every truck driver, every carrier must develop a protocol for handling such incidents so everyone knows what to do, when to do it and know all of those contacts necessary to accomplish the task. Drivers have always known their job wasn’t just steering, braking and shifting

There has been a shutdown of everything deemed non-essential. Food was determined to be essential and all food reaches its targeted table by truck. Therefore, many truck drivers find themselves as essential. Not only that, there is a definite change of attitude on behalf of the general public. There’s now goodwill, recognition that truck drivers are many rungs up the evolutionary ladder and not just pond scum as they have been known as

for far too long. It is this goodwill that is the positive side of the COVID-19 experience for truck drivers. It is this goodwill that must be nurtured so that truck drivers don’t revert to being the butt of human existence again. The truck driver always has had this attitude, this need to serve humanity whether those being served knew it or not. Now, the general public know it’s the ability to serve that makes truck drivers thrive. The truck drivers have noticed that COVID-19 has had a definite effect on the rate of crashes involving large trucks. The incident rate has dropped so significantly it’s barely negligible. Let’s hope when all those cars come back on the road that those car drivers understand they have been the problem all along, generally speaking. The whole point is to recognize COVID-19 for the opportunity to adjust your planning should we again be asked to cope with either a resurgence of this virus or a new one that wreaks similar havoc in the future.

DINING DURING COVID-19

I

never would have thought that this column would be so compromised and that I would no longer be able to dine out. Who could have known that Covid-19 would render us helpless and that the food industry would suffer so much. We have certainly taken things like meeting friends for coffee, lunch or dinner, or having popcorn at the movies for granted. Just because we cannot dine out, it doesn’t mean we can’t still enjoy a meal. So many restaurants are struggling right now and are offering take out and delivery options. I strongly encourage everyone to use these available options and keep our local restaurants open. Besides, who wants to cook every single day, especially when everyone is stressed out and upset? Most restaurants are offering take out and free delivery, and certainly a pizza for the kids, or some butter chicken will help cheer the family up. Food brings families together. Since I cannot dine out, I decided to share a recipe I created that my family enjoys. The recipe is based on my mom’s chicken recipe, and I changed it up to make it into a chicken biryani recipe. I hate washing pots and this requires only one pot. I know not everyone can afford to eat out right now, and this is pretty easy to make. It just takes a bit of preparation in chopping. If you can’t find chicken, which is pretty scarce, make it vegetarian.

14

MAY - JUNE 2020

Ingredients: • 1-2 tbsp of butter or olive oil • 4 chicken breasts or 6 chicken thighs chopped • 4 cloves of garlic finely chopped • 1 inch piece of ginger finely chopped • 1 red and 1 green bell pepper chopped • 1 yellow onion chopped • 5-6 white mushrooms sliced • 1 cup frozen green peas—still frozen • 1.5 cups of white basmati rice rinsed • 1 -213 ml can of tomato sauce or 2 tbsp of tomato paste • 1 tspn salt • 1 tspn chicken stock powder or vegetable stock if making vegetarian • 1.5 tspn turmeric • ½ tspn ground coriander • 1.5 tspn whole cumin • ½-1 tspn hot red chilli powder. This is heat so use less if you don’t like it hot. • 3 cups of water • Chopped cilantro to garnish (optional) • Salt and pepper to season

Instructions: In a heavy bottom pot on medium heat, add oil or butter. Add in whole cumin and garlic and stir. Add chopped chicken, season with salt and pepper and stir 3-4 minutes until chicken is almost cooked. Add in mushrooms, both bell peppers, and onion and season with salt and pepper again and stir for 2 -3 minutes. Do not let it brown or else it won’t look appetizing after. Add in rice and stir about a minute. If rice is sticking to the pot add a splash of water. Add ginger, turmeric, chicken stock, coriander and chilli powder along with tomato sauce. Then add the 3 cups of water and stir. Now add in the frozen peas and turn the heat up to medium high. Once you see the water come to a simmer, cover and turn the heat to low. Check to see if the water is evaporated after about 10 minutes. It takes 12-20 minutes to fully cook depending on your stove. Once the water is almost evaporated, remove from heat and let it sit for 5 minutes covered. Remove the lid, fluff with fork. Taste for salt and add more if needed before serving. Add extra chilli powder if you like it hotter. If using fresh cilantro, sprinkle on top. Serve with a side of plain yogurt and some salad or eat it on it’s own. Enjoy and stay healthy! I Want to Skip My Payments During Covid-19 I

n these unprecedented times, there are many new ways of life we must all adjust to. We stay in our homes and are essentially locked down. Children are no longer in school and many have lost their jobs and income. The media is reporting primarily on the Covid-19 pandemic around the world, but in regards to financial matters, I’m finding the media to be giving very vague information which is causing people to misinterpret and then get the wrong impression about their mortgage and loan payments. The assistance being provided is for those who have lost their jobs. People such as 18

MAY - JUNE 2020

airline employees and restaurant workers have lost their jobs and need help. They can prove it with a record of employment or job letter stating they were terminated. Unfortunately, I have been getting calls from people, all of whom have jobs and are deemed essential. I’ve asked for job letters and proof of unemployment and the vast majority of the people calling have no proof and therefor cannot qualify for assistance. Most have even admitted they are currently working, and that “everyone else is skipping payments and not paying interest so I want that too.”

Pash Brar

You cannot follow the crowd and do as everyone else does, especially if you are in what is deemed an essential service industry and are continuing to work, while others have no work. Financial institutions are being swamped trying to help those who have lost their jobs, and then to have someone call who is still working causes huge backlogs to process requests. It takes time away from the people who actually need the help. Many of these currently employed individuals are also being aggressive, rude and are verbally abusing the staff. That disrespectful behavior is uncalled for in any situation. So, if you NATIONAL MAGAZINE

have lost your job and have proof of that, that is the only time you should call for assistance. Only bank if it is critical and respect others by being patient and courteous. People are hearing the government is giving out assistance and they in turn think that that means they don’t have to pay their mortgage for six months and have a free ride and will pay zero interest. This is what people want to hear and are repeating to me over and over and it just isn’t true. There is no such thing as a free ride for anything. Each financial lender has their own version of assistance. In some you will pay 10% of your current payment, some you pay interest only, some you pay half your payment etc etc. Regardless of which plan your lender if offering they all have one thing in common; you will pay more interest than if you just continued your regular payments. Each of these plans has the consumer paying MORE. These plans are not interest free and you’re not skipping payments, you will be making that payment at some later point in time and the interest just keeps on building. If you are able to continue your payments, then I strongly suggest you do so to save money. I also strongly suggest during this time to use a reliable news source for information on the latest developments about the pandemic. Facebook and rumors are not reliable sources. I keep hearing so many sensationalist news stories which are completely false; Such as a trucker telling me no truckers are allowed to cross the Canada/USA border; YES they can and I know many who have. ALL trucking loads have stopped; NO they haven’t because trucking is an essential service. I have no job; YES you do, I just spoke to your boss and he confirmed

NATIONAL MAGAZINE

there are loads and work available. So please don’t go on a rumor mill and use a reliable source for news such as CNN or follow reports from the World Health Organization (WHO) for facts instead of rumors. This is all so scary, but we make it worse and more stressful when we believe things which are not true. I know times are tough for so many right now, but one thing has really come to light in this situation; People are living pay cheque to pay cheque. They have no savings to draw from and many did not plan their household goods to last a

F OR

long stretch of time. This pandemic is unfortunate and it may take many months for everyone to recover, but I hope that will get you thinking about how you could have prepared better. No one saw this coming, but being better prepared in the future will go a long way once this is all over. I hope you stay healthy and I thank the truckers out there who are delivering life’s necessities so everyone can eat and be healthy. Please practice social distancing while out on the road and self isolate when you return home. Together we can flatten the curve.

Transportation Industry Keeps Goods Moving Amid COVID-19 An Inside Look At How Trucking Companies Are Navigating A Global Pandemic

M

any industries are being affected by COVID-19, and the Canadian transportation industry is not immune to the issue. At a time when shipments of essential goods — including medical supplies — are critical, the trucking industry continues to deliver. However, keeping trucks on the road and moving during this time does not come without challenges. Amid a rapidly changing situation, here’s a look at just a few of many supports that are allowing transportation companies to keep goods moving for both corporations and consumers. 1. Border-crossing exemptions While strict rules are in place at the border between Canada and the U.S., government officials continue to enforce that the restrictions will not affect commerce and trade. This means trucking between the two countries can continue as an essential service. Currently, truck drivers remain exempt from having to self-isolate for 14 days upon crossing the border, unless they display symptoms of the virus. As questioning and screening remains strict at border crossings, drivers are encouraged to closely self-monitor for symptoms, practise proper hygiene and limit physical contact as much as possible. 22

2. Hours-of-service (HoS) relief Known as the Essential Freight Transport Exemption, the new rules permit federally regulated motor carriers and drivers in Canada to work beyond regulatory limits if they’re hauling essential goods. The list of goods includes food, fuel, medical supplies, equipment and other items necessary for health and wellness amid COVID-19. Under the exemption, drivers must still maintain logs and follow a list of criteria related to tracking their drivers’ operations. 3. Flexible deliveries Many communities in Canada have modified their municipal noise by-laws and other restrictions. This will allow shipments to be delivered in off-peak hours. The added flexibility is ensuring that necessary items for health care, the retail sector and other industries can continue to be transported. 4. Rest stops remain open Highway rest stops provide muchneeded respite for drivers on long hauls and continue to remain open. In Ontario, for example, rest stops such as ONRoute locations were deemed an essential service by the government and continue to operate. While dining and seating areas remain closed, drive-through, take-out and graband-go options continue to serve truck

operators on the road, with 24-7 rest rooms and fuel pumps. 5. Changes to licensing procedures and deadlines With many physical government offices closed, modifications are in place for transportation companies that have driver and vehicle licences set to expire. As the changes to procedures and deadlines vary across Canada, a detailed list can be obtained from the Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators (CCMTA) at www.ccmta.ca. 6. Continued cash flow During this time of uncertainty, if there’s one element of business that transportation companies need stability in, it’s cash flow. At J D Factors, we enable businesses to sell their open accounts receivable for immediate cash. Trucking companies are continuing to turn to factoring so they can operate their business at full speed and deliver much-needed healthcare equipment and supplies. Amid COVID-19, J D Factors continues to operate as an essential service. We are open and ready to assist our current customers as well as new prospects. Learn more at www.jdfactors.com.

2020 CADILLAC XT6

by: : Jag Dhatt

TRUE TO ITS CADDY NATURE

E

very manufacturer is trying to fill in their subcompact, compact, and full-size SUV’s gaps so that there is a vehicle that appeals to every buyer. Many years ago, Cadillac only had their full-size Escalade. Then the XT5 and XT4 were added but there was still a sizable gap between these and the Escalade; well, Cadillac has now filled that void with the XT6, a three-row luxury SUV that I found to be handsome, powerful, and of course, filled with amenities. The most attractive angle of the new XT6 has to be the front end. It’s minimalist and not flashy, but looks aggressive, especially with the Sport package. Our test vehicle, painted in Garnet Metallic (dark burgundy) was matched nicely with gloss black accents, including front grille, roof rails, side window surrounds, and came with unique 20” sport wheels, a chassis damping control and body-colour door handles. The front-end shares similarities with other GM vehicles, with the narrower headlamps and lower stance. Side and rear profiles are attractive as well. I think black wheels would have made the XT6 look the look, but that’s just a personal opinion. Most people who saw the XT6 thought it was quite attractive and looked like a Cadillac, but with a modern touch. Now let’s talk about the Sport model I drove, which is more than just cosmetics. The XT6 Sport’s Chassis Damping Control adds an adaptive suspension system that actually makes the ride quite smooth, even after the potholes appeared after the winter storm in Vancouver. Cadillac’s damping control is one of the best out there for sure. What’s more is that the Sport model has the Sport Control

28

MAY - JUNE 2020

System, which adds two clutches in the rear axle mount. Whereas the Luxury model feels doughy in corners, the Sport takes corners with confidence by sending up to 100% of power to the outer wheel in corners. And take corners I did, and the Sport handled very well. Remember, it’s not a sports car, but does much better than some other SUVs. Some others have commented that the XT6’s engine can be loud, especially under heavy acceleration, but I didn’t experience that at all. In fact, it sounded like a Cadillac, and when you put the Sport in Sport mode, the exhaust has a throatier sound. Under the hood sits the only powerplant available, a 3.6L V6 that produces 310 horsepower and 271 lb-ft of torque. Although the torque number may seem low, the XT6 gets off the line quite quickly. The Sport adds a nine-speed automatic transmission, which holds shifts a little longer than what you’d find on the Luxury trim. The engine and transmission are really well matched and provide an engaging driving experience, not something we’d usually find on a Cadillac like this. Fuel economy is also impressive; the XT6 has cylinder deactivation, which shuts down two of the cylinders when the load on the vehicle is low. It’s a technology that other manufacturers should adopt. In all honesty, I didn’t think I’d like the 2020 XT6 Sport as much as it did, and like it I did. Whether it was driving around town, dropping kids at school, or going to business meetings, I liked almost every single aspect of the XT6.

MY RIDE

The cabin is a nice mix of classic Cadillac and contemporary design. Rather than being busy, the interior layout of screens, controls, and technology has a very modern look to it. And of course, the materials reflect what you’d expect from Cadillac. Being a three-row SUV, the first two rows offer a lot of leg and head room. Where some competitors have a puny third row, the XT6 actually has usable room for adults. The second row has a bench seat as standard, but I would upgrade and choose the captain chairs. The center dash is home to the XT6’s latest version of the Cadillac User Experience software, called CUE 3.5. The 8” screen isn’t the largest in the market, but it does suffice. Not only is it touch but can be controlled by a console mounted wheel; I found I used both methods equally and they work well. As expected, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are standard, as is 4G LTE Wi-Fi and wireless charging. Speaking of wireless charging, Cadillac nailed the location as rather than have a flat pad that takes up space, the XT6 has an angular spot just in front of the armrest. In fact, it’s so convenient that I forgot my phone there on more than just one occasion. The seats are very comfortable for short or long drives; however, I would have liked more bolster support. No, I’m not asking for Recaro seats, but this was the Sport model, just saying. Heated and cooled seats are offered for the front, while only heated seats warm those in the second row. I was looking for the massage seats, but nope, not in the Sport.

NATIONAL MAGAZINE

The driver’s seat also is fitted with one of Cadillac’s safety systems, and one I find very useful. When nearing an object or when avoiding a potential collision, the driver’s seat vibrates; other manufacturers have chosen the steering wheel to vibrate, but with Cadillac, the seat does. Even more impressive is that seat vibrates in intensity and location depending on where the object or collision is about to happen. So, you may be asking about the XT6’s pitfalls and yes, there are some. Although Cadillac has made the interior very nice, it does need a complete refresh to make it completely modern. At this time, it’s good, but improvements can be made. The other knock against this Caddy is the price to value equation. Yes, it’s a good SUV but when it’s also not amazing value, especially when you have to bundle options together, which get costly. As an example, my test Sport, with optional packages was just over $81K. That’s a lot of money, especially when newcomers like the Kia Telluride or established models like the Acura MDX offer more value. The 2020 Cadillac XT6 is a really good SUV that delivers all what you’d expect from Cadillac. Offering a three-row option, the XT6 will surely be a good option for those who want or need a vehicle of this size, but don’t want to move up to the Escalade. Yes, it’s pricey, but then again, it is a Caddy.

2019 MERCEDES AMG C43 ESTATE

I

have to admit that it takes a certain type of person to buy a station wagon. Long before the minivans and SUVs, the station wagon was the family hauler of choice; I should know because when I was a wee lad, we had one. I even remember when we had to come in from the interior to Vancouver for the weekend, my sister and I would even be allowed to sit in the cargo area…yeah, safety wasn’t really on the forefront of people’s minds back then. Nowadays, if you own a station wagon, then the reasons for ownership have all changed. It’s a choice, and for enthusiasts, there are a few out there as well. If you want one that is fashionable, has a strong lineage, and above all, is a blast to drive, then the AMG C43 Estate (wagon as we call it here) should be on your radar for sure. 30

MAY - JUNE 2020

Right off the bat, you’ll notice the name. It’s not a C300, but an AMG C43, which means while it’s not a hand-built true AMG that carries a coveted signature, it’s still going to have power. The AMG C43 Estate has a specially tuned turbocharged 3.0L V6 that puts out a very respectable 385 horsepower and 384 lb.-ft of torque, enough to reach 100 km/h in just 4.8 seconds. That’s pretty impressive and the only other competitor to this would be the Volvo V60 Polestar, but it’s a heck of a lot more expensive. The C43 Estate starts around $60K, while the V60 Polestar will set you back over $80K. Getting back to the AMG C43 Estate, I love the look of this wagon. The lines are absolutely gorgeous from any angle, even moreso than the sedan sibling. And being a wagon, it’s a lot more practical. You can throw a bunch of stuff in the NATIONAL MAGAZINE

MY RIDE

by: Jag Dhatt

back, and when driving along, it’s accessible quite easily. For 2019, the C43 receives new LED headlamps that give for a cool three-dimensional look. Also new is the twin-louver grille, resembling that of the AMG 63s. At the back, we find the quad tailpipes and while they don’t all spew out exhaust, they do look nice. Overall, the C43 Estate is a real head-turner. Yes, there’s not a lot of wagons out there, and this one, just looks the look. The interior of the C43 Estate is also up to par and has some nice upgrades. There’s the new MBUX infotainment system that features a 10.25” widescreen display – it’s still sits on top of the center air vents. The graphics are crisp and sharp and navigating the menus is pretty easy. My only gripe with this screen is that it looks odd; I prefer it to be embedded in the dash, but with a low dash, it might be a struggle. The steering wheel of the C43 is really well made, not only for looks but for functionality. The placement and workings of the control buttons is spot on and you can control almost all aspects of infotainment without taking your hands off the steering wheel. All dash controls are easy to use and kudos to Mercedes for keeping hard buttons for basics like seat heating, HVAC controls and even the source selection for media. The one control that is oddly placed is that for the heated steering wheel. It’s tucked behind the turn signal and you really have to look to see if the heat is on or off.

find the AMG C43 Estate’s ride a tad stiff and harsh, especially when going over speed bumps with cup of coffee in your hand. But look past this minor inconvenience and you’ll love the overall ride of the car. Mercedes continues to use its 9-speed automatic transmission and I’ve mentioned this before, it’s a gem of a gearbox. Shifts are precise and in the Sport modes, they are fast; use the paddle shifters and you can really get the C43 Estate to behave the way you want it to you. But here’s the thing; although paddle shifters are there, I found that barely used them because the transmission is so good as is, no matter what driving mode is selected. Wagons haven’t been the norm for decades for most people. Family haulers nowadays are the minivans, SUVs and yes, for some, full luxury pickup trucks. But for some, the wagon is appealing because it offers most benefits of an SUV, yet, better driving performance. The 2019 AMG C43 Estate is an appealing -actually no – very appealing vehicle because not only is it one sexy looking vehicle, it’s offers all the luxuries while providing lots of practicality and performance for any family or driver. It’s definitely worth a test drive.

The seats are comfortable and supportive, regardless whether the C43 is being driven normally or spirited. Some may complain that the rear seats are small, but remember, it’s a C-class. I had 5 adults in the car and there wasn’t a lot of complaining. A nice touch for sure are the red seatbelts! Now to the fun stuff, the actual drive of the AMG C43 Estate. Unlike an SUV, which is also practical, the allure of this wagon is its low center of gravity, which allows it to be thrown around any winding road. And throw this Estate into turns I did.

Pictures Courtesy: Russell Purcell NATIONAL MAGAZINE

The C43 wagon is ridiculously fun to drive. No matter what the task or errand or point of destination, this Estate fulfills every expectation, well almost, for the driver. It handles amazing, whether you want a comfortable drive or an aggressive, sport drive. There is a caveat I’ll mention here – even in Comfort mode, some will MAY - JUNE 2020

Langley Trucker Double Shifts To Help Covid-19 Crisis

I

By: Jag Dhatt

t’s good to know that there are certain people who have the capability to step up the plate during times of need. Now, more than ever, front line workers and first responders are in desperate need of protective equipment and a local Langley truck driver, Petko Ganachev, was able to make a difference.

Within a week, Ganachev was able to get 300 volunteers who could get materials and print the face shields and straps and assemble them. Staples also stepped up and donated laminating sheets to the cause. So far, the volunteer group has printed over 10,000 face shields.

I had the opportunity to interview Petko, who has been a truck driver for over 10 years with Ken Johnson Trucking, in late April. From his own words, Ganachev never thought he’d become an important figure in helping front line workers in dealing with the Covid-19 crisis.

“I never knew our production would grow so much and in such a quick time,” adds Ganachev. “I just wanted to help the front line workers because without them, it’s a failing scenario.”

“I was speaking with a person whose partner worked in a care home,” said Ganachev. “It became evident to me that there was a need for face masks for the care home because there had been an outbreak of the coronavirus.” After speaking with some others and finding out what needed to be done, Ganachev put his hobby of 3D printing to use. He founded a 3D printing group that was able to make both the face shields and the mask straps. “I had been interested with and doing stuff with 3D printers for about 4 years,” said Ganachev. “I was waiting for someone else to join with me and help build these face shields.”

While Ganachev is putting in countless hours in producing the face shields, he continues his work with Ken Johnson Trucking. “It’s not easy to handle both of these responsibilities, but with a great team, we’ve managed to do so.” Ken Johnson, General Manager of Ken Johnson Trucking, commends Ganachev for his initiative and tenacity to get things done. “I spoke with Petko and told him the company will do what it can to help because initiatives like these are needed during times of struggle.” Petko Ganachev, who fell into trucking due to an injury, has always enjoyed driving. JGK Media Inc. applauds Ganachev and his volunteer team for their efforts during these trying times because they are appreciated.

HOWES ANNOUNCES INDUCTION OF TONY JUSTICE TO

HOWES HALL OF FAME

H

owes is honored to induct Tony Justice into its inaugural class of 2020. A truck driver of over 20 years, Tony is also an authentic musician who draws inspiration from the roads he travels and the people he meets. Born in the small town of Visalia, CA, he has become one of country music’s most talked about independent artists. Tony has sold over 100,000 albums in the past 9 years, all while averaging 2,500 miles per week as a professional truck driver.

Full-time truck driver and country music star carries the voice of America’s blue-collared working class. Nothing moves Tony more than country music and truck driving. “I’m the most blessed guy in the world. I get to live two childhood dreams,” Tony says. “I get to drive trucks and make music.” His passion and dedication to his two-lane career made him a perfect candidate for the Howes Hall of Fame. “It’s truly humbling,” Tony continues. “The thought that so many people are supporting my music and my dreams. I’d like to thank Howes for welcoming me into the Hall of Fame. As a 100-year-old, family owned American company, it’s a real honor to be recognized by them.”

more specifically, America’s truckers. Tony knows more than anyone that when you understand the trucking industry, you understand the meaning behind these types of songs. They represent pride for the job, the lifestyle, and the hardworking people you see day in and day out on the road. The Howes family believes that Tony would have been Bruce’s perfect example of “Big Earl.” Embodying so much of what it means to be a trucker, it’s no surprise that Tony is an in-demand performer around the country. Yet while he may play in front of several thousand people at a time, he continues to be a friendly, approachable, everyday guy as well. After a show, you can find him signing autographs and listening to the stories of each and every fan about the impact his music has had on their lives. On the road, you can find him at a truck stop café talking shop about what you’re hauling or where you’re headed. This connection with people is what helps make Tony’s music so relatable. “I’ve been blessed to be in a unique position as an artist,” Tony explains. “Not only can my fans relate to my music and to me, but I can relate to them... and so does my music. They understand I’m out here in the trenches with my brothers and sister most every day.” In between long hauls and playing shows, Tony makes sure to take time to appreciate what truly matters; his family. On his rare days off, he can be found next to his loved ones around a watering hole or a dirt track. Tony often emphasizes that he couldn’t make it on the road or on the stage without so much support from home. With deep passion for his music, unwavering love for his family, and steadfast dedication as a driver, Tony is genuinely an All-American inspiration. For all of this and more, Howes is thrilled to welcome Tony Justice into the Howes Hall of Fame. The Howes Hall of Fame was inspired, in part, by the company’s 100th Anniversary, which they are celebrating this year. It serves as a platform for Howes to thank and acknowledge all the great work that has, and does, go on in the trucking and agricultural industries. With the goal of recognizing unique achievements across a broad spectrum of categories, the Hall will provide a showcase that will live on for generations. The Howes Hall of Fame officially launched on March 26th, and can be viewed now at www. howesproducts.com/HOF.

Howes has a long standing connection to music as well. Bruce Howes, father of current company president Robert Howes, dabbled in country music for several years. Under the persona of Kenny Westwood, Bruce would get on stage with his guitar and perform for truckers nationwide in his search for the ultimate All-American Trucker, the one he called Big Earl. He wrote two full albums of trucker-themed country songs, The Legend of Big Earl and Big Earl Returns. Bruce sang on the albums along with Nashville stars such as Porter Wagoner, Jeannie Seely, Lee Greenwood, Red Simpson, and Dick Curless. Produced by beloved Nashville producer Mark Moseley, Bruce’s albums represent America and, 38

STRESS AWARENESS

I

t doesn’t seem to matter how we slice it stress is always in our lives. Sometimes it takes a break and returns at a later date when we don’t really want it around. It almost seems like it’s who we’ve become, but it’s not. It’s part of us like having a sore back because of how we slept, or a headache because of dehydration. We just have avoid believing it’s a permanent part of who we’ve become, because it doesn’t have to be that way. Being a professional driver can be stressful, I’m not going to lie to you, but there are different types of stress to consider, along with ways to identify you’re feeling stressed. You may be surprised to realize there are two different types of stress. There’s good stress and bad stress. You may be asking, how can there be such a thing as good stress? Good stress can be related to deadlines and time restraints. There’s an emotional reward at the end. For example, reaching your travel deadline in time allows you to feel good about the outcome. Traveling to reach that deadline may have been stressful, but it’s over now and you feel good about it. Bad stress can be related to things you can’t control. That type of stress affects us emotionally more than it should, especially when there’s nothing we can do about it. So how do you recognize the bad stress? If you’ve identified that your mood has changed for the worse, take a step back and identify why that is the case. Is there too much traffic which is slowing down your route? Is the weather making it difficult to travel in a normal routine? These are things that as a professional

42

MAY - JUNE 2020

driver you have no control over. Take a deep breath and wait it out. To help remove that from your stress and anxiety, make adjustments to your travel plan if available. Leave earlier. Take a different less traveled route even though it may take you longer. Keeping your vehicle moving as opposed to stop and go traffic gives drivers the sensation they are well on their way. Another way to identify you’re having a lot of driving stress is every little thing seems to upset you. Text messages, emails, instructions from your place of work all seem to set you off. Those are the tell tail signs you need to take a break and reassess what you’re doing. Weigh the pluses and minuses. Make a list and decide if it’s a big deal or not. In most cases it’s not a big deal, but this is a quick and easy way to defuse the situation. As far as the other things that happen which cause stress in our lives, if you have absolutely no control over them, let them go. Accept them and move on. Constantly thinking of these stressful things can seriously distract drivers from doing their job as safely as possible. Removing the stress, or at least putting it on pause until you’re out of the vehicle, will allow you to remain focused on the driving task, plus you’ll be a lot healthier because of it.
