Publisher // JGK Media Inc.

We’ve Come a Long Way When we first launched DRK Magazine in April 2014, we had a vision of creating a professional automotive, motorsport, and lifestyle magazine that the people of the Lower Mainland would appreciate, enjoy, and respect. We are humbled by the positive responses DRK Magazine has received by respected professionals in the industries. In this final issue of 2014, enjoy the reviews of the 2014 BMW 750Li, 2015 Lincoln MKC, 2015 Jaguar F-Type convertible, and 2015 Yamaha FJR1300. All of these vehicles showcase the evolution in design, technology, and safety in the automotive and motorsport industries. In this issue, we would also like to welcome two new columnists: Ryan Sahota, a CA and motorsport enthusiast, will be writing on many aspects of finances, accounting and related topics; Leah Gillanders, certified automotive technician, will be answering your automotive-related questions. With the winter season now upon us, we encourage all drivers to be extra cautious. Remember, it’s better to be a few minutes late than make a mistake that you will regret. From all of us at DRK Magazine, we would like to wish everyone a wonderful holiday season, Merry Christmas, and nothing but the best for the New Year.

Chrysler Canada marks five years of year-over-year sales increase

• • • •

20,922 vehicles sold; an increase of 9 % over November 2013 60 consecutive months of year-over-year sales growth November sales record set for Jeep® and Ram brands November sales records for Chrysler 200, Jeep Cherokee and Wrangler, Ram pickups

Chrysler Canada today announced a milestone 60 consecutive months – or five years – of year-over-year sales growth, signifying the longest sales streak in the Company’s history. November 2014 sales increased 9 per cent to 20,922 units, as compared with 19,206 sold in November 2013. These results have contributed to Chrysler Canada’s best sales, calendar-year-to-date, through 11 months and positioned the Company to have its best sales year in its 89 year history. “With a broad portfolio of competitive and desirable vehicles, ranging from our Chrysler 200, to our iconic Jeep brand and Ram pickup trucks, our vehicles continue to gain momentum in the market as evidenced by our streak of five full years of monthly sales growth,” said David Buckingham, Chief Operating Officer, Chrysler Canada. Built on a core of values for authenticity, passion, adventure and freedom, the Jeep® brand continues to grow its strong following in Canada. November sales for the brand were 5,887 units, an increase of 44 per cent versus November 2013. The Jeep Cherokee, the industry’s most capable mid-size SUV, led the way with 2,122 units sold, up 65 per cent versus the same month one year ago. Simultaneously, the legendary Jeep Wrangler – famed for combining open air freedom with go-anywhere capability – also marked a November sales record with 1,674 vehicles sold, up 59 per cent versus the same period in 2013. The Ram Truck brand also set an all-time November sales record in Canada. Sales of 7,239 units mark a 21 per cent increase over November 2013. Leading the charge was the multi-award winning Ram 1500, a light-duty pickup which has been earning the attention of consumers with its style, capability, value and class-exclusive features like an available 3.0-litre EcoDiesel V6 engine and four-corner air suspension. Ram pickups sales were 6,699 units for November 2014, a record for the month and an increase of 19 per cent versus November 2013. Moving to passenger cars, the Chrysler 200 more than doubled its monthly sales when comparing November 2014 to November 2013. A record 1,136 units were sold, making an increase of 130 per cent. The all-new Chrysler 200 was re-invented inside and out to combine understated elegance, craftsmanship and stateof-the-art technology. Our newest entry is changing the game in the mid-size sedan segment by including a segment-first standard nine-speed automatic transmission, best-in-class V6 horsepower and an available all-wheel-drive system which automatically disconnects from the rear axle to save fuel. 8

Further Sales Growth Expected By BMW Next Year In the light of Chinese dealerships requiring further sales incentives and lower projections of sales, BMW AG is expecting their sales to grow across the entire range next year. The arrival of several new BMW models, like the new BMW X6, alongside with a revamped of its MINI brand lineup, should help with the sales growth. A slight bump in the road might be the economic recession in Europe, a market that eats up 40 percent of BMW’s deliveries. The perturbing political and economic landscape is troubling for the brand, but the overall sales for BMW should remain high even in those circumstances. “The world has got a few bumps in the road at the moment,” BMW sales chief Ian Robertson. “We still see that there is more opportunity for growth than downside risks next year,” he said, citing demand from the United States, China and parts of Europe. Alongside the usual luxury models, they are also expecting to sell more of its electric and hybrid cars. Further demand from countries like Norway, who have a great climate for eco-friendly vehicles, might provide the additional traction the car maker needs with its electric models. BMW has seen great numbers for BMW i3 sales in United States as well, accounting for the majority of i3 sales throughout the 2014. It is expected that BMW will sell over 20,000 units of the i3. “We had a slower rampup than originally anticipated,” Robertson said. “The numbers now are running where we expected them to be.”

Ferrari delivers first of six Pininfaria Sergio targas In October, Ferrari told the world that it would build six production versions of the roofless Pininfarina Sergio concept. They’re making good on their promise: The first example of the radically styled 458 has just been delivered in Abu Dhabi, hot on the heels of the announcement of the LaFerrari-based FXX K track-only hypercar. Sergio primo shares its rich red and matte black color scheme with the concept, and we’re all about the gold wheels. The targatopped semi-custom has lost just a bit of its arresting outrageousness in the translation from showstopping concept to driveable road car. It has a windshield, for one, but the concept’s spacey flying buttresses and stripped-down interior have been rendered more conventional. You’re not going to mistake this for a run-ofthe-mill 458 Spider, but the two cars’ shared bones are readily apparent - especially in profile. Some of the jaw-dropping impact of the admittedly polarizing design has been lost (not that the sort of gazillionires who might buy one would have ever consented to wearing a helmet just to drive it).

OpenRoad Auto Group named one of the 50 Best Employers in Canada OpenRoad Auto Group has been recognized as one of the best Canadian companies to work for as part of the 50 Best Employers in Canada survey. The annual survey ranked OpenRoad eighth out of 50 top Canadian employers, making this the third time in five years that the B.C.-based automotive retail group has received the prestigious designation. Conducted by Aon Hewitt, a global firm specializing in human resource solutions, the 2015 list of the country’s 50 best employers was compiled based on responses from nearly 350,000 employees in 259 participating private and public-sector organizations. Sharing the Best Employers in Canada recognition with OpenRoad this year are industry-leading businesses like Cisco Canada, TD Bank Group, McDonald’s Restaurants of Canada and WestJet.OpenRoad team (12) The annual survey measures employee engagement based on their levels of commitment and how motivated they are by their company’s leaders, managers, culture and values. The survey also analyses performance in six key categories that influence employee engagement including Employment Brand (the strength of a company’s reputation as an employer); Leadership (which organizations have highly effective senior managers and leaders); Performance (how well an organization manages, recognizes and provides opportunities for employees); The Work (how well an organization equips employees to do their jobs); Company Practices (leadership development, HR practices, etc.) and

The Basics (including supporting work/life balance). Employees at OpenRoad Auto Group reported high levels of engagement in all categories, citing examples of specialized programs that support professional development, along with exemplary systems for employee recognition, internal communications and employee events. “At OpenRoad, we not only put our customers first but also our employees,” said Christian Chia, President and CEO of OpenRoad Auto Group. “For us, it’s a practice that creates positive, supportive work environments which foster happy, motivated employees who, in turn, are building loyal customer relationships at each one of our dealerships.” Amy Li, Assistant Sales Manager of OpenRoad’s Richmond B.C. Lexus dealership, echoed Chia saying that the auto group has been able to keep its staff happy and engaged over the years. “I am excited and proud to be a part of a progressive organization. OpenRoad has provided me with countless opportunities to advance and grow,” said Li. Earlier this month, OpenRoad Auto Group’s newest Porsche retail centre, OpenRoad Porsche Langley opened its doors to the public. The group also recently announced the acquisition of three Vancouver dealerships, including The BMW Store, MINI Yaletown, and RollsRoyce Motor Cars Vancouver. In 2015, OpenRoad will also open new Volkswagen, Jaguar and Land Rover dealerships.

ast month, I wrote a quick summary about my experiences with the 2014 BMW 750Li. Initially, I only had the vehicle for a couple of days, but the folks at Brian Jessel BMW were kind enough to give me the vehicle again for another week. Who’s complaining, right? But it’s not all fun and games; I wanted to make sure that a full review of the 750Li was given. December 2014

wo of my good friends are home designers and while sipping on our favourite beverages, we began to admire my Alpine White test 750Li (“Li” indicates long wheelbase), which was parked right outside the Starbucks at which we were meeting. The 750Li has presence. This luxury vehicle is just sensual and luxurious, suggesting countless hours in perfecting an almost flawless modern structural design. The Li, however, has a completely different profile than the regular 750i. Walk around the car and from the front and sides, the beauty of the car just blows you away. A long hood, elongated sleek roofline, and an elegant tail section define this car as pure luxury. Unlike the previous generations of the 7-series, the current generation is less curvy and has much more of a chiseled look, which appealed to the three of us. For 2014, there are minor changes in chrome accents and design in the lower front bumper that are tastefully done. After we had finished our coffee, we all decided to take a ride to White Rock in the 750Li. Leaving their cars behind, my friends 12

BMW 750Li and I got into the BMW and admired the interior. Just like the exterior, the cabin of the 750Li offers outstanding craftsmanship that matches the choice of materials: supple leather, inlay polished wood trim, and a beautiful Alcantra Roofliner. The seats were redesigned last year and thus, there is not much change for this year. The front passengers still enjoy stitched leather, heated and vented, and massage seats. For long drives, the massage seats are invaluable. Not to be ignored, the rear seats are heated, and in the Li, rear passengers are comforted with more than 44.3 inches of legroom, more than the Jaguar XJL and the Audi A8L. In the BMW 750Li, all occupants are really able to stretch out and drive/ride in comfort. The front cabin is still driver, or me, focused, with the instrument panel and most controls angled towards him or her. This is a theme that is found in the 5-series as well, and works well to reinforce that this is a driver’s machine. My test vehicle had the optional stitched leather dashboard, which just adds a new level of elegance. At the center of the dash was positioned the 10.2 inch high-defini-

Tuning your Ride Part II prPormYNs itaUNinMg Bwg II

I

n the October 2014 issue of DRK Magazine, I gave a basic introduction of what chip, or electronic control unit (ECU), tuning is all about. In simple terms, tuning involves changing or modifying a programmed “map” of your vehicle to achieve superior performance, whether it be more power, cleaner emissions, better fuel economy, or a combination of all of these. After having some lengthy conversations with Kelvin Choi, tuning expert with ETG Vancouver, and Jags Gill, owner and founder of ETG in California, I bit the bullet and decided to have my BMW 535i tuned by ECU Tuning Group (ETG). Trust me, I had some reservations, especially since my stock 535i, named Madeline, ran smooth as silk and had enough power for me, or so it seemed. Both Choi and Gill guaranteed me that I would not regret having Madeline tuned. Not only would I get more horsepower and torque, but she’ll get better fuel economy. What impressed me more was that ETG tunes over a hundred cars per week, including the likes of BMW, Mercedes, Scion, Subaru, Lexus, Range Rover, Jaguar, Porsche, Aston Martin, Bentley, Ferrari, Lamborghini, and Bugatti – that’s a pretty impressive list. On the day of the tuning appointment, Choi arrived at the underground parking lot of my office and went to work. He said the entire process would take about 3 – 4 hours. First, the factory software from Madeline would be downloaded onto a computer; next, the file would be sent to ETG’s head office for analysis; finally, a new upgraded file would be sent to Choi, who would then upload this new program to Madeline. After a few hours, my phone rang and Choi said Madeline had been reprogrammed and all was done. I couldn’t wait to get behind the wheel and feel how she would respond. I started up the car and noticed that some error lights had come on; “Don’t worry, Madeline,” I consoled her. “Sometimes error lights come on and they just need to be removed.” Choi, sensing my anxiety, plugged in an ECU reader and removed the codes. I pulled Madeline out of the parking lot and began to drive, disappointed that I didn’t feel much difference. Choi explained that any freshly tuned car first needs to learn the new program; I would feel the real difference after about 150 km of driving. For the rest of the day, I drove as normal, again, disappointed that nothing much had really changed. Well, the pedal felt softer than before so that was different. Even on the second day, the car still did not feel much different and I was tempted to call Choi and voice my concerns. Did I just waste a decent amount of money for nothing? Was Madeline unhappy that she had been reprogrammed? Man, my wife wasn’t going to be impressed either. 16

In Your Corner

On the third day, as I was driving to work, I noticed something different. No, sorry, I felt something different with Madeline. She seemed “awake” and smoother, and her rpm’s were shifting differently than before. I decided to pass a slower car in front of me, so I floored the accelerator and HOLY COW. Madeline lunged forward like a cheetah on steroids that it almost scared me. I had passed cars before by flooring the pedal, but Madeline had never accelerated like this before. What an incredible feeling and thank God I hadn’t complained to Choi yet. On the entire way to the office, I tried different ways of accelerating, from off-the-line to a rolling start. Each time, Madeline was just faster, and if I could feel it, then the numbers both Choi and Gill had promised must be correct. The same evening, to really test the car, I phoned my friend who owns a stock BMW 550i. Every time we had “raced”, he always beat me by at least a car length or two. We went to the empty docks in Delta and lined up. As usual, he was confident, but boy was he in for a surprise. We did 3 runs and each time, Madeline came out in front. When he asked what I had changed, I just smiled and said, “Madeline was tuned by ETG.” It’s been just over two months since Kelvin Choi from ETG tuned Madeline and from my own personal experience, what a difference. My car is not only much much faster, she’s smoother and yes, fuel economy has increased slightly. I think Madeline’s fuel economy would be even better, but I am just having so much more fun beating cars off the line. Someone recently asked me to explain the difference in Madeline after being tuned. Well, it’s kind of like in The Matrix, when Neo gets all the extra software downloaded into his brain and he instantly becomes a Kung Fu grandmaster. It’s similar to that. If you want to unleash the hidden power of your car, take it from me, get it tuned and you will not regret it.

The new inverted front fork uses one leg host of added features, to bring their luxury sports-touring machine for rebound dampening, while the other is used for compression. This is very similar to Yamaha’s own FZ1, R1, and R6. Despite this, I still thoroughly up-to-date. Be a Good Winter Driver srdIAW dy mOsm dy vDIAw fRweIvr bxo Jasleen Dutt

W

ith December upon us, this is the perfect time to remind drivers to be better prepared for the winter season. Granted, the Lower Mainland does have a variety of weather patterns, all drivers, whether in the Fraser Valley where there is more snow or in downtown where is more rain, need to be ready for changing driving conditions. Every year, I cannot believe the number of accidents that occur because of unprepared and overconfident drivers, even when there is just a sprinkle of the white stuff. Many new buyers are opting for all-wheel drive vehicles, which are great. But with the purchase of an all-wheel drive vehicle also comes more reliance and dependence on the machine, rather than on safe driving skills. Here in Vancouver, there are scores of owners of all-wheel drive vehicles who think they rule the road; remember though, these vehicles may be great in getting you moving, but they stop just like a two-wheel drive vehicle. Here are some great driving tips to keep in mind for our Lower Mainland weather. 1. Clean your entire vehicle of snow and ice before driving. So many times, drivers leave the roofs of their cars covered with snow and only clean the window elements. Once you are driving, the snow on the roof can blow onto vehicles behind you causing an unsafe situation. 2. Slow down, especially when approaching turns and hills! So many accidents can be avoided if drivers just slow down to a 20

DRK News / Views / Stuff safe driving speed. It’s better to be 10 minutes late than having your car in a ditch or dealing with an insurance claim. 3. Allow longer distances between you and the vehicle in front of you. Not only will you have more time to stop, but more time to make a decision if things go wrong. 4. Don’t use cruise control, even on highways. You should be the one in control. 5. Let the ABS do its job. Many years ago, we were taught to pump the brake pedal on snow and ice. Well, unless you can pump the brakes about 20 times a second, just stomp on the brake and let the antilock system do its job. 6. If your vehicle begins to skid, ease off the accelerator and steer into the skid. Thus, if the rear of your car is sliding to the right, steer to the right. It seems awkward, but it’s the right thing to do. Once you regain control, slowly apply the accelerator and continue. 7. If you get stuck, rather than trying to accelerate hard, first clear as much snow from around the tires. Then put something with traction (salt, sand, etc.) around the tires. Next, slowly try to drive out. You may need to rock the car back and forth by using drive and reverse. If all fails, call a tow-truck. Again, remember that an all-wheel drive vehicle will help you get moving from a full stop and will somewhat help around corners, but will certainly not help you stop or slow down any faster than a two-wheel drive. Always be a safe and responsible driver, especially in poor driving conditions. If you don’t need to be on the road, stay at home. If you must travel, always keep a winter emergency kit in the vehicle.

After the terrible, horrible, no good, very bad Winter of 2013-14, no one will begrudge your lack of enthusiasm for Winter 2014-15. Unless you’re an avid skier, we can all agree that the prospect of this season can be pretty miserable. But, the best defence in advance of the ice and snow is being prepared and taking the necessary precautions by switching to winter tires. You’ll save yourself time, aggravation and money. According to a Canadian Tire survey, a majority of drivers in Ontario, the Prairies and British Columbia choose not to install winter tires, mistakenly believing that all-season tires offer adequate safety. The evidence says otherwise. In winter-condition tests, Transport Canada and the Rubber Association of Canada found that stopping was 30% to 40% lon22

DRK News / Views / Stuff ger with all-season compared to winter tires. In cornering, vehicles with all-season tires went off the testing track at speeds of only 40 to 50 km/h, while the vehicles equipped with winter tires had no problem. The results were consistent with front-, rear- and all-wheel vehicles. The experts agree that winter tires are designed to save lives. “What’s interesting is that many people who live in snow-belt regions across the country recognize the need for them,” said Ken Lindhardsen, Desjardins’ vice-president of Claims Operations. “But some drivers in urban regions don’t see the need to switch. The fact is we’ve all experienced those icy mornings when you’re rushing to work or school and the salt trucks just haven’t made it to your neighbourhood yet. These conditions are much more dangerous than just plain snow and having the right tires can keep everyone safe.” The reason why these tires are the most effective at preventing accidents is because they have deeper, specially-designed treads and are made of innovative rubber compounds that are softer and more pliant. This allows them to perform better on ice, snow and slush, but also in both dry and wet conditions when the temperature dips below 70 ¬Celcius. It’s also important to keep an eye on your tires’ air pressure. Overnight temperatures can drop from 5˚ to –15˚ and this rapid reduction can zap the air out of you tires by as much as 4 psi. An under-inflated tire can be quite dangerous, so it’s important to keep tracking your tire pressure. Having a safe winter is a great reason to equip your car with the best tires. Transport Canada suggests that, “winter tires marked with the pictograph of a peaked mountain with a snowflake meet specific snow traction performance requirements, and have been designed specifically for use in winter conditions.” Another incentive is that some insurance companies will reward their clients who use winter tires with a discount on their auto insurance. sosIeySn AwP kYnyfw v`loN kIqy gey ivMtr kMfISn tYstW Anuswr ivMtr twierW nwloN Awl sIzn twier rukx leI 30 qoN 40% vDyry smW lYNdy hn[ kOrnirMg krn smyN kIqy tYst Anuswr vI ivMtr twierW nwL qW koeI sm`isAw nhIN AweI pr Awl sIzn twier hox ‘qy 40 jW 50 iklomItr dI spIf ‘qy vI vhIkl trYk qoN lWBy clI geI[ ieh nqIjy hr leI ie`ko ijhy hn vhIkl BwvyN PRMt, rIAr jW Awl vIHl twierW vwLI hovy[ swry mwihr ies g`l ‘qy sihmq hn ik srdIAW ‘c ivMtr twierW dI vrqoN izMdgIAW bcwaux leI hY[ klymz AwprySn dy kYn ilMfrsn dw kihxw hY ik snoA bYlt ‘c rihx vwLy fRweIvr qW ies g`l nUM smJdy hn pr bhuqy lok jo ies qrHW dy QwvW ‘qy nhIN rihMdy ies dI loV nUM mihsUs nhIN krdy[ ieh qW swry jwxdy hn ik AsIN swirAW ny ies qrHW dy hwlwq dw swhmxw kIqw hY jdoN AweIs jMMmI huMdI hY Aqy sVkW ‘qy lUx su`tx vwLy quhwfy ielwky ‘c phuMc nhIN sky huMdy pr quhwnUM b`cy skUL C`fx jwx jW kMm ‘qy jwx dI kwhlI huMdI hY[ Awm sDwrx peI snoA nwloN ies qrHW dI hwlq bhuq ^qrnwk huMdI hY[ jy ies qrHW dy smyN mOsm Anuswr ivMtr twier hoxgy qW hI bcwA ho skdw hY[ ies qrHW dy twier hox nwL durGtnwvW qoN ikauN bcwA rihMdw hY, ies dw kwrn ieh hY ik ivMtr twierW dy trY`f vDyry fUMGy hox dy nwL nwL ies qrHW dI rbV dy bxy huMdy hn ijhVI izAwdw nrm Aqy vDyry lckIlI huMdI hY[ies nwL ieh AweIs, snoA Aqy sl`SI sVk ‘qy hI vDIAw nhIN cldy sgoN KuSk Aqy ig`lIAW sVkI hwlqW’ ‘qy vI vDIAw kMm krdy hn jdoN ik qwpmwn 70 sYlsIAs qoN vI hyTW Aw jWdw hY[ ies qoN AglI g`l ieh ik ies qrHW dy mOsm ‘c ieh vI zrUrI hY ik AsIN Awpxy twierW ‘c hvw dy pRY`Sr dw vI iKAwl r`KIey[ rwq dOrwn qwpmwn 5˚ qoN –15˚ ifgrI q`k Aw skdw hY[ ies qrHW nwL quhwfy twierW dI hvw 4 pI AYs AweI q`k Gt skdI hY[ ies qrHW twierW ‘c loV qoN G`t hvw hoxw bhuq ^qrnwk ho skdw hY[ ies leI ieh vI bhuq zrUrI hY ik qusIN Awpxy twierW dy hvw dy pRYSr dw iDAwn vI zrUr r`Ko[ quhwfw srdIAW dw mOsm vDIAw lMGy ies leI zrUrI hY ik qusIN AwpxI kwr dy twier vDIAw Aqy ies mOsm dy AnukUl r`Ko[ tRWsport kYnyfw dw kihxw hY ik ijnHW twierW ‘qy au`cI cotI ‘qy snoA Plyk dw mwrkw l`gw hoieAw hY auh twier hI srdIAW dy mOsm dy AnuswrI hn ikauN ik auh hI hr qrHW dy srdIAW dy BYVy mOsm dw mukwblw krn dy smr`Q huMdy hn[ikauN ik auh bxwey hI srdIAW dy hr pRkwr dy mOsm dw twkrw krn leI huMdy hn[ dUjI Pwiedy dI g`l ieh ik ku`J ieMSOrYNs kMpnIAW ies qrHW dy twierW dI vrqoN krn vwilAW nUM ieMSOrYNs rytW ‘c irAwieq Aqy auqSwhI Pwiedy idMdIAW hn[

Although the redesigned 2015 Chrysler 200 isn’t much different in size from last year’s 200, you don’t have to look at it very long to realize this is a radically different midsize sedan. A five-passenger midsize sedan, the 2015 Chrysler 200 comes in four trim levels: LX, Limited, S and C. This isn’t the quietest or smoothest engine in this class, but most buyers will find that the 2.4-liter is powerful enough for their needs, as highway merging and passing maneuvers come easily. You can afford this attainable luxury for $19,495.

he history of prestige vehicles made by Daimler extends back to the earliest days of the motor car. They have now commenced a new chapter with the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class. As an addition to the portfolio of S-Class saloons, the Maybach S-Class sets new standards in the luxury segment. It has twin-turbo 6.0-liter V12 under the hood producing 523 hp and 612 lb-ft of torque. New S-Class already defines the height of automotive engineering in a host of technical disciplines such as safety, efficiency, climate control and noise characteristics. The Mercedes-Maybach S600 is to be available in the spring of 2015. Pricing hasn’t been announced, but expect it to start somewhere around the $230,000 mark. That’s hugely expensive, but compared to the previous entrants in the series, it’s actually something of a bargain. 26

JAGUAR F-Type Convertible

Review by: Jag Dhatt | S.J Power Media Inc.

D

uring the summer of this year, I had the privilege of test driving the 2015 Jaguar F-Type Coupe and boy did that car turn a lot of heads. Yes, Jaguar did have some big shoes to fill when competing with the likes of the Chevrolet Corvette, Porsche 911, and even the BMW M6, but in the end, Jaguar did hold its own. Recently, I had the opportunity to spend a short amount of time in the 2015 F-Type convertible. Even though the West Coast weather did not cooperate as much as I would have liked it to, there was still a little bit of time to have the top down and drive around our beautiful city. Ever since Tata Motors took over the Jaguar and Land Rover brands in 2008, I think they’ve made some great changes that have allowed the sales numbers for these brands to soar. The F-Type is just such an example. This convertible does share most of the lines and contours with the coupe, but there are subtle differences in the front bumper and along the rear lid areas. This beautiful drop-top is one of the best looking cars in this class, and just like the coupe, it turns a lot of heads. Jaguar has done a phenomenal job in creating a design that looks nothing like its competition and that alone is a quite a feat. To streamline the car to its maximum, Jaguar’s deployable handles retract when not required, creating uninterrupted air flow along the flanks. With the top up or down, the car is gorgeous. Step inside the two-seater and you’ll be wowed by a great cabin. This is truly a driver’s car, with a racing inspired steering wheel, supportive sport seats, and all controls perfectly located. The paddle shifters allow drivers to select gears sequentially without taking their hands from the wheel. The dashboard and center console are what I would call simplistic elegance. Some two-seater convertibles have a

hard time making these areas look appealing while retaining functionality; Jaguar nailed it with this design. What I was most interested in was how the convertible drove as compared to the coupe. Both coupe and convertible share the same engine configurations, so the numbers are essentially the same. But, that being said, the coupe has a more rigid structure and thus, has slightly faster run times. Most drivers honestly will not care, and if you like to feel the wind blowing in your hair with the top down, then the 0.2 seconds slower time for the convertible won’t matter. My wife loved the convertible and I think I would have a hard time choosing between the two. On the road, this convertible Jag is a wonderful car to drive. Steering is precise, race-like, and very responsive. With different suspension and dynamics settings, drivers can choose the one for their moods on varying days. Since I had the “S” model, the Active Sports Exhaust is music to the ears. Press the button on the centre console to manually activate the bypass valves, step on the accelerator and be ready to smile. The sound is beautiful that even the men in blue turn their heads. Just nod and keep driving, which is exactly what you’ll want to do with this car. The most exciting news for 2015 will be the AWD model. Many potential drivers may not have chosen the F-Type because there was no AWD. With this option now available, I’m assuming buyers will be lining up to order theirs. The Jaguar F-Type convertible amazed me with its great looks, amazing performance, and classic British elegance. There are few other cars that have people double-taking, unless you’re spending over $200K for a car. Just test drive one and feel the exhilaration for yourself.

The Importance of a Close Relationship with your Chartered Accountant Awpxy cwrtrf AkwaUNtYNt nwL vDIAw sbMD bxwaux dI mh`qqw

I

am constantly amazed at how little business owners or individuals communicate and develop meaningful professional relationships with their accountants. A Chartered Accountant will be the closest advisor and external confidant to you during your lifetime, you will disclose more personal information to them than your doctor, counselor or local hair stylist. Your financial well-being and success depend on a good working relationship with your Chartered Accountant. I often tell my clients that your accountant will only be as good as you let them. Of course your accountant has to be proficient, experienced and knowledgeable, but we as professional advisors can only make our clients that more successful in a meaningful value-added relationship that extends beyond just filing your tax return and year-end. What separates the savvy successful business owners and individuals from their competition is recognizing the value in a close relationship with their Chartered accountant. The leading reasons as to why you should consider developing a closer relationship are outlined below: 1. Keeping your accountant updated on your business allows them to think outside of the box in real-time, allowing for more valuable insight with strategic and financial decisions instead of only once a year where planning opportunities might be lost or decisions made too late. 2. Recognizing the value beyond general compliance for filing, and engaging your accountant in meaningful operations and strategy planning opens the door for conversations on tax planning, protecting and growing your assets and improving your wealth creation. 3. A Chartered Accountant is the ideal business advisor as we are exclusively trained in many management, financial, and operations aspects outside of traditional accounting and tax. In taking advantage of our vast skill sets we can provide through long-term planning the ability to implement strategies that will allow for creation, retention, transition and succession of wealth and preservation of your legacy. In the immortal words of Benjamin Franklin, “An investment in knowledge pays the best interest”. Essentially, surrounding yourself with knowledgeable trusted professional advisors, such as a Chartered Accountant, and recognizing their value through the establishment of long-term relationships will propel yourself and your business to greater heights never before imaginable. 32

Prepare your vehicle now for the deep freeze

D

id you know that even in winter, a neglected cooling system is one of the main reasons for a vehicle break down? Antifreeze/coolant performs three important functions. It protects the cooling system from freezing, from boiling over, and from premature wear due to corrosion. Even with long change intervals, the coolant level can become too low – and sometimes due to a leak, it can completely drain away. So be sure to put an antifreeze/ coolant check on your pre-winter maintenance list. And to prevent being left on the side of the road in the cold, here are some additional quick tips from Prestone Products Corporation, a leading name in car care: • Protect your cooling system by choosing antifreeze/coolant with a high quality corrosion inhibitor, such as the Cor-Guard inhibitor package in the Prestone line. This is particularly important if your vehicle is new. Engine metals are thinner and lighter these days (to meet consumer demands for lower cost and improved gas mileage) so an anti-corrosion agent designed to meet new engine construction is vital. For topping

up coolant levels, save time by using a premixed formulation of 50% coolant and 50% demineralized water. • Change to winter tires. Transport Canada points out that vehicle handling is improved when tires of the same type, size, speed rating and load index, are installed on all four wheels. As importantly, proper air pressure extends tread life, improves safety, and reduces fuel consumption. Check the

pressure once a month as winter temperatures get colder. • Inspect the windshield wipers every month, and after six months change them for better performance and safety. • Fill an emergency kit with a blanket, flash light, extra batteries, warm work gloves, a collapsible snow shovel, a tow rope, lightsticks, and energy bars. Take Advantage of Tech to Buy Your Next Car

T

he cost of a new vehicle is substantial enough, including the extended warranty, so is there a way to reduce future maintenance costs without risking the terms of the warranty? A little bit of investigating goes a long way. No matter whether you work on the car yourself, or engage a favourite mechanic to do it for you, did you know there are many premium products on retailer shelves today that meet or exceed the manufacturer’s specifications? “You can trust the manufacturer to give you the best schedule for vehicle care, especially when it comes to maintenance intervals and procedures outlined in the owner’s manual,” says Colin Dilley, director of technology at Prestone Products Corporation. “You may notice, however, that for maintenance products the manufacturer may specify a brand, or state you can use an alternative that meets the same specifications. The antifreeze/coolant is a good case in point. Dilley points out that the prime job of

34

December 2014

this fluid is to maintain the right temperature under the hood, giving us personal safety and a longer engine life. There is a lot of product choice, however, so take a look at a few more tips to keep the warranty valid: • Consult the owner’s manual regarding the flush and fill intervals, which are generally every two to five years, or 58,000240,000 kilometers, whichever comes first. • Choose a formulation that meets your

vehicle manufacturer’s specifications, and one that provides a good quality ‘corrosion inhibitor’ to protect vital engine metals. This is particularly important if your vehicle is new. Engine metals are thinner and lighter these days (to meet consumer demands for lower cost and improved gas mileage) so a high quality anti-corrosion formula such as Prestone with Cor-Guard inhibitors, is vital in the heating and cooling system. • When topping up coolant levels save time by using a premixed formulation (with corrosion inhibitors) of 50% coolant and 50% demineralized water. • Do a complete flush. Just draining the system will not remove all of the contaminated antifreeze/coolant. • Monitor the fluid level and condition regularly, at every oil change or every time you open the hood. The plastic antifreeze/ coolant expansion tank is clearly visible under the hood of most vehicles. If you are not comfortable doing this yourself, ask a professional technician. News Canada

DRK Classic Car

{ 1955 } Chrysler

Compiled by: Jag Dhatt

C

onventional wisdom says the first “muscle car” was the 1964 Pontiac GTO. But more sophisticated automotive enthusiasts know that the 1955 Chrysler 300 has the better claim to being first. In the mid-fifties Detroit’s big three were going in three different directions. GM introduced its lightweight V8 and put it into its Corvette, Ford introduced its ‘personal car’ the Thunderbird. Chrysler chose to go in a different direction and introduced the 300 series. The name was inspired by the Hemi engine producing 300 HP. The 300 was nothing like Detroit built previously, a luxuriously equipped high performance sedan. The Hemi V8 boasted a performance camshaft mated to stiff valve springs, solid lifters, forged crankshaft and dual 4-barrel carburetors, with a 150 MPH speedometer. Named for its Coupe body style and the 300-hp Hemi V8 under its hood, the Chrysler C300 was unlike anything Detroit had built in a generation: A luxuriously equipped, high-performance full-size car. At a time when most manufacturers boasted of their soft rides, the 300 chassis was tuned and stiffened to deliver excellent handling and roadholding. The C300 was 1.5-inches lower than the New Yorker hardtop it was based on, and it was fitted with special Goodyear Super Cushion six-ply tires, heavy-duty shocks and leaf springs, front stabilizer bar and a 150-mph speedometer. In 1955, Chrysler won the NASCAR Grand National title and the AAA Championship and finished first-in-class at Daytona’s Flying Mile. The C300 established Chrysler as a force in NASCAR racing and speed events for years to come. Some consider these the original American Muscle Cars. Chrysler 300s dominated stock car racing in the hands of drivers like Tim Flock and Lee Petty. With this model, Chrysler now had the most powerful production car in the world. The 1955 C300 established Chrysler as a force in NASCAR racing and speed events. In 1955, Chrysler won the NASCAR Grand National title and the A.A.A. Championship by winning 33 races. In addition, Ford also had the Mercury lineup, which Exclusive engine, exclusive design, and the roof is much has now been retired, that diverted attention away from lower than the Escape.” In describing the MKC, Farley said, “It has all the comfort and feature-functions that Lincoln. The MKC will be the first vehicle equipped with the new 2.3L turbocharged Ecoboost 4-cylinder engine. Recently, at an auto show, I had a chance to sit down with Jim Farley, Executive Vice-President of Global With 300 hp and 300 lb-ft of torque, this should be some Marketing, Sales and Service for Lincoln and Ford. powerplant. This is all good stuff, but how is the LinGetting one-on-one access to such a senior executive coln MKC going to compete against established small provided insight into the direction Lincoln is going to crossovers? Farley said, “For the segment consumers, take and the hopes they have for their new Lincoln MKC we would hope offering 6-cylinder performance with crossover. 4-cylinder efficiency is something unique in this segZack Spencer The MKC is built off the same platform as the highly ment. 2015 Lincoln MKC that 2.3L.” He went on to say, “We intend to price it much lower than the Germans, so it’s going to be a much better value.” On that front, the MKC starts at $39,940, which is a great starting point for any small luxury crossover. One main competitor is the Acura RDX, which starts at $41,190. The toughest challenge for Ford in making the Lincoln, as a brand, relevant is how are they going to resurrect a Luxury line that is not top of mind? Farley was quite blunt. “All you need to know is two facts. The first fact is that we sold all of our PAG brands, (Jaguar, Aston Martin, Volvo and Range Rover), and thus, we have no other luxury brand. So if you want a luxury brand and you’re an executive at the company, you’re going to be driving a Lincoln. The second fact that you need to know about is that we have already spent the resources on the product, for fully differentiated products that the company has not done in decades. So, this is kind of the first time, in probably twenty years, that the company has really, in Lincoln, been truly global. And the decision to go to China is very important for Canadian customers because it is the ultimate example of our commitment.” In my interview with Mr. Farley, I came away with the impression that Ford is trying to treat Lincoln the same way Volkswagen runs Audi, as a totally separate business. Ford has developed an entirely separate design studio, for the first time in the history of Lincoln, under Ford’s direction. The engineering teams are separate and the management team spends a lot of time on Lincoln. As Farley puts it, “Not just because we want to drive nice cars but there is no successful global OEM (car company) that also doesn’t have a successful luxury division.” There seems to be a sense of pride that Ford is taking with these new products that they hope will resonate with the public. The MKC is the second vehicle, in a four vehicle surge, from Lincoln. Last year saw the introduction of the MKZ and MKZ hybrid and this year the MKC will arrive. I suspect the next two vehicles will be a larger sedan and a larger crossover but we will have to wait and see. I’m looking forward to driving this new MKC as many of Ford’s products already handle very well and the new 2.3L 4-cylinder sounds like a dynamo. It must be a good engine because Ford will also use it in the allnew Mustang. Styling is combination of North American influence with a European flare, plus an interior that is sleek and futuristic. It will be interesting to see how this new product is received. With the Ford Escape already the number one selling crossover in Canada, Jim Farley’s team at Lincoln has a great head start and it would be nice to see them resurrect such a historic brand. A1: Paying attention to how your vehicle is performing is important to do on a daily basis or whenever you get into your vehicle. Simply take a look at the dash to confirm no warning lights are on. IF you tend to always park in the same spot at home take a look at the ground when you pull out and check for any fluids, if you do spot a leak on ground note down the color. I like to do a walk around my vehicle about once a week to ensure the tires look ok, and nothing has happened to the body. Monthly,it is good practice to check your tire pressures and oil level.

A2: I Defiantly believe in always going back to the dealer. The technicians are experts on your make of vehicle. Even a simple thing as a oil change, when a manufacturer specific technician opens the hood of the vehicle, they immediately know what to look for. When there are more complex issues with your vehicle most of the time we have seen or herd of it before making the fixing process smoother. You may also bring it to any goverment certified inspection shop.

1. Sense of Humor Being able to laugh at the stresses of this world is a must, according to the women on our panel. You get bonus points if you can make them laugh. Humor tells a woman that you can laugh at—read, handle easily—the many difficulties that life throws at you. 2. Intelligence A worldy, interesting man is a man she likes to show off. Men who are take-charge problem solvers make women feel secure, and men who are always improving are never boring. 3. Passion Why have women always melted for musicians? Because rock stars are passionate in public. Women like displays of passion because they’re not accustomed to seeing them from men. Get passionate about something: kayaking, impressionistic art, barbecuing, or Habitat for Humanity. It’s proof that you care for and about something beyond yourself. 4. Confidence A man who feels secure in his own skin makes the woman he’s with feel secure. By showing you can handle unfamiliar people or situations, you tell the woman in your life that she need not fear, either. 5. Generosity This is more important to women over 35 than it is to those under that age. Generosity, however, doesn’t just mean springing for dinner at a four-star. Your willingness to give your time and lend your ear is what women crave.

Winter Emergency Kit 2.0

C

anadians know that winter driving can be summed up in one word: Preparation. But what does being prepared include? According to Lacey Elliott, car expert and spokesperson for autoTRADER.ca, aside from the requisite items such as a snowbrush and ice scraper, booster cables and road salt, motorists today should consider adding several other items to their vehicle emergency kit this winter. “A regular emergency kit for summer may include staples such as a first aid kit,” she says. “But as weather conditions change dramatically in the winter, assembling a next-level kit is all part of being prepared.” The Visibility Factor Needing to pull over to the side of the road during the winter, especially during whiteout conditions, means making yourself as visible as possible. Elliott says this means that an absolute must-have in your winter emergency kit are road flares or high-visibility roadside triangles that will signal your distress to other drivers. “Many accidents occur as passers-by simply do not see your vehicle pulled over until it’s too late,” she says. Portable Power Cell phones are indispensable in an emergency, but if your phone battery is fading fast and your car battery is itself dead or dying and unable to charge it, your phone won’t be of much use. “A portable power pack that’s sold in many consumer electronic stores is a good idea to have in-hand,” Elliott says. “The ability to charge your phone, even without the aid of your car, is worth its weight in

gold if you’re stuck roadside during the winter.” The Blanket Solution Elliott says an extra set of clothes— especially wool socks, gloves and a warm toque—in which to keep warm is also advisable, should you find yourself stuck in the cold waiting for help. If space is an issue, another option is to include an emergency blanket, which are thin and metallic—not unlike the ones used to keep marathon runners warm post-race. “They don’t take up much room in your trunk and might just save the day in frigid conditions.” News Canada
