During my recent vacation to India during this winter season, I recalled the above words and once again, realized their importance. While in India, with its bustling population and an almost infinite number of cars, I noticed something peculiar; although readily present, road rage wasn’t as bad as I expected, especially with roads being crammed with everything from pedestrians, cyclists, tractors, tangas, bull-carts, rickshaws, automobiles, scooters, motorcycles, buses, and transport trucks. It seems people have learned to give up anger and accept that accidents can and will happen. Here in the Lower Mainland, road rage is an issue and there have been some extreme examples. We encourage all our readers to always keep calm, especially when there is an incident on the road. In this February issue of DRK Magazine, we test drive the all new Volvo V60 TS. I was never a fan of wagons, but I think this Volvo may have just changed my mind. We also look at the 2015 Ford F-150, a revolutionary truck that has an all-aluminum body. This might just change the pick-up industry for the future. Read about the new Indian Chief Vintage motorcycle, a bagger that is set to make a huge comeback. Henry Ford’s Model T is our classic car and looking back, it’s amazing to see how far automotive technology has come. In addition, we have our regular columns from Ryan Sahota and Leah Gillanders. Ford Expanding Operations As Ford ramps up production of the allnew F-150, the company today announced it will add 1,550 new jobs across its Kansas City Assembly, Dearborn Stamping, Dearborn Diversified and Sterling Axle facilities in the first quarter of 2015. The new jobs will support production and growing customer demand for the recently launched 2015 Ford F-150. “Thanks to stronger than

expected customer demand, we’re adding 1,550 new workers to support additional F-150 production,” said Joe Hinrichs, Ford president, The Americas. “These jobs are further proof that customers recognize the all-new F-150 as the toughest, smartest, most capable F-150 ever. We sell every truck we can build, and we plan to build more.”

Nissan Shows off New Maxima at Super Bowl

Car shoppers got a treat during the 2015 Super Bowl game as Nissan took the wraps off the redesigned 2016 Nissan Maxima — but just for a few seconds. The 2016 Maxima is expected to debut at the 2015 New York Auto Show and arrive at Nissan dealershipslater this year. Pricing has not been announced. Nissan offered no details about the new Maxima, except to say in a statement that a “future Nissan sports sedan appears at the end of the commercial, with details to be announced in the future.” The Maxima teaser revealed a striking

Nissan’s upcoming 24 Hours of Le Mans challenger, the Nissan GT-R LM Nismo, also made its world debut in front of more than 100 million viewers during the commercial, which is dubbed “With Dad.” In the meantime, Nissan said the 2014 Maxima will “see an extended model year and continue to be available into 2015.”

It’s about time, but still better late than never. Ford has announced that its hottest European car, the Focus RS, will be coming to Canada and the USA in 2016. The 315 horsepower rocket, will features a 2.3 liter Ecoboost engine, Brembo brakes, 6-speed manual transmission and Recaro seats. “The allnew Focus RS is a serious machine with high-performance technology and innovative engineering that sets a new benchmark for driving exhilaration on the road and track,” said Raj Nair, Ford’s head of vehicle development, in a press release. “The RS line has a proud history of technical breakthroughs that have migrated to mainstream Ford vehicles to benefit all of our customers, and the new Focus RS is no exception.” Ford’s One Ford plan is slated to produce and introduce twelve more performance cars globally by 2020. Police Cruiser Involved in Crash with Delta Woman

Ridge Meadows RCMP Officer Won’t Be Charged

A pregnant Delta, B.C. woman and her three-year-old child were taken to the hospital after their car was involved in a collision with a police cruiser. The collision happened in late January at just after 3:30 p.m., Delta Police said. Sgt. Sarah Swallow said a police officer was responding to an assault call and travelling north on Scott Road through 80th Avenue, when a vehicle turned left in front of him, causing the vehicles to collide. “There did not appear to be any visible injuries at scene,” Swallow said. “However the pregnant woman and three-year-old in the other car were transported to hospital for precautionary measures.” The officer was also transported to hospital and released. As a police officer was involved, Delta Police contacted the Independent Investigations Office, but the agency declined to investigate as it did not meet its investigative requirements.

The B.C. Criminal Justice Branch says there will be no charges against a Metro Vancouver RCMP officer involved in a crash that injured a motorcyclists. The branch says the officer from the Ridge Meadows detachment was attempting to pull over several motorcycles on Highway 7 near Deroche last May when a motorcyclist going in the other direction crashed his vehicle. The branch says there was conflicting evidence concerning whether the officer’s vehicle was in her own lane or straddling the centre line and if oncoming traffic had slowed prior to the crash. The motorcyclist broke bones in his leg and shoulder and the female passenger on the back sustained minor injuries. The branch says there were different accounts of the circumstances of the accident, and based on careful review it can’t be proven beyond a reasonable doubt that the officer committed a crime. Apart from the allegation that the officer’s vehicle straddled the centre line, the branch says there’s no evidence that concludes the officer’s driving fell below the standards of the Motor Vehicle Act.

Porsche Spyder Unveiled and Sold at Porsche Langley

Porsche Langley was filled with excitement when the very limited edition Spyder was unveiled and sold to a local resident. General Manager, Aly Jiwani, was not at liberty to disclose the buyer’s name, but did state that he was a resident of Langley. The Porsche Spyder carries a price sticker of $1 million. Having over 940 lb-ft of torque, the Spyder can reach 100 km/h in just over 2 seconds. DRK Magazine was invited to this exclusive event, which was filled with fine food, wine, and music.

Could it be the End for the Honda CR-Z? Honda launched the new CR-Z in 2010, hoping it would attract the same followers as did the older Honda CR-X. However, in the past three years, the hybrid CR-Z is hanging on for survival due to lack lustre sales. For 2015, the CR-Z still has the same 1.5 liter, inline four-cylinder engine which puts out 122 hp and only 107 lb-ft of torque. Even though sales numbers were almost 39% higher than in previous years, total sales volume is still low. Unless there is a surge in buyers for the Honda CR-Z, this model could get the axe. 8

Mitsubishi RVR Gets 2.4 Liter Engine

Starting next month, top-of-the-line Mitsubishi RVR price lines (GT and SE Limited Edition) will feature a larger four-cylinder engine with 2.4 litres of displacement; the current 2.0-litre engine will continue with RVR ES, SE 2WD and 4WD price lines. The 2.4-litre, 16-valve DOHC, 168-hp, aluminum four-cylinder MIVEC engine is the same power plant available in Mitsubishi Lancer AWC models and arrives in RVR GT and SE Limited Edition as part of a mid-year model enhancement. Mitsubishi’s decision to offer two powertrains for RVR was born from the engineering team’s desire to strike a balance of fuel efficiency and power – as well as offering a broader choice to consumers. On highway driving, for instance, Mitsubishi RVR 2.0-litre 2WD achieves 7.3 L/100 km. Now in its fifth year in Canada, the U.S.made RVR was the best-selling Mitsubishi in Canada in 2013 and narrowly missed the same title in 2014 (edged by the Lancer family of sedans). In the United States where RVR is known as Outlander Sport, the model was the company’s top seller in 2014. Inside, all 2015 RVR price lines receive new audio trim panels; specifically, ES and SE get carbon-black finish while the top-ofthe-line GT receives a glossy “piano” black panel with silver accents. RVR GT also gets new LED daytime running lights which, despite their name, also operate at night providing a unique light signature.

Paramedic Killed in Maple Ridge Motorcycle Crash

Jaguar XE Named “Most Beautiful Car”

Emergency responders are mourning the loss of one of their own after a fatal accident Thursday night. Ryan Ferrier is being remembered on social media as a great father, friend, and professional. The 43-year-old paramedic died in a crash on Lougheed Highway. Ferrier’s motorcycle collided with a semi truck that was making a left turn onto 105th Avenue in Maple Ridge. “This is a really sad day for us,” said Linda Lupini, executive vice president of the Provincial Health Services Authority and B.C. Emergency Health Services. “This is the worst possible situation for people who work for us, constantly responding to calls where they see people in very vulnerable situations and suddenly it’s one of their own,” Lupini said. Ferrier’s colleagues are being offered counseling and psychological support. They’re also offering support for each other. Lupini said the authority plans to do something to memorialize Ferrier, but it’s consulting with his family about what would be appropriate before making any decisions. Ridge Meadows RCMP is investigating the cause of the crash.

At the 30th edition of Festival Automobile International in Paris, the Jaguar XE was awarded ‘Most Beautiful Car of 2014’. Jaguar Director of Design, Ian Callum, collected

the award in front of a crowd of 600 VIPs and more than 60 media. The award is decided by a public vote, with more than 100,000 votes cast across 59 countries. Beating competition from the Mazda MX-5, Mercedes C-Class Estate and Fiat 500X, the Jaguar XE took victory with 28% of the votes. From the morning of January 28, the Festival Automobile International continues in Paris with a four-day exhibition at the Hotel des Invalides, where the Jaguar XE will be showcased alongside 18 concept cars, including Jaguar Project 7. More than 40,000 visitors are expected to attend. This is the XE’s second French award since the Paris Motor Show in October 2014, where it was crowned ‘Best Production Car’ by Auto Plus magazine and the listeners of French radio station, RTL.

ways about pure acceleration and speed. On the road, I noticed a considerable amount of body roll, even though the car came with sport suspension, standard with the R-Design package. In all honesty, I would rather prefer the touring suspension that is stock on the non R-Design V60’s. With the exception of having a lower ride height and stiffer suspension, there’s really not a huge advantage with the sport suspension. This wagon has an electro-hydraulic steering system and although it’s nice and direct, it seems too enhanced for my taste. Yes, it’s fun to drive, but in terms of overall performance, the Volvo V60 T6 lacks the edge that an Audi or BMW might have. After a few days with the R-Design V60, I began to realize that this wagon is not only pleasing to the eyes, but also practical in some ways. For example, the rear seats can be folded down in three different variations, to make proper use of storage you may need. Also very useful was the cargo divider in the rear, especially when carrying groceries and other goods. By utilizing this divider, you don’t have items rolling around in the back. Moreover, there are a couple of perfectly sized storage spaces that held milk jugs in place – yes, I had to run some

I like the “out-dated” number pad. The programmable gauge cluster is rather attractive, and you can choose to display certain information based on your driving needs and style; I especially liked the red-lit Performance Mode. One of the best features of the V60 T6 has to be the seats. Volvo has always received accolades for safety, but the designers of these seats deserve recognition. At both front and back, the stitched leathers provide an almost perfect balance of comfort and sport. Speaking of seats, rear seating is not bad, but a few more inches of legroom would be terrific, especially when carrying all adults. My test V60 T6 had the 3.0 liter turbocharged 6-cylinder engine, coupled to a 6-speed AWD system. This motor is responsive and Volvo claims a 0-60 mph run in only 5.2 seconds.

In Sport Mode, this run time seems about right. Yes, this wagon is fast, quicker than its competition, but, in reality, it’s not al-

domestic chores during the test drive as well. Oh well, it’s all in a day’s work. Finally, being a family man, there’s something to be said about Volvo’s focus on safety. My test vehicle came with all the safety features like blind spot monitoring, collision avoidance, adaptive cruise control, and this list goes on. But one of the most innovative ideas from Volvo is the integrated booster seats in the rear. With a flip of a latch, the front portion of the cushion rises and moves back over the rear section, perfectly. Voila! No need to carry booster seats. My two young girls found these integrated booster seats to be quite comfortable. If you haven’t seen them yet, check out this feature at a dealer or on YouTube. The V60 T6 R-Design is a great looking vehicle that is ready to contend with other German brands. It has great styling, good ride quality, and competitive pricing that will make it appealing to those who wish to buy a true wagon. And, just as our 1976 Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser had a major impact on my automotive taste, so did this new Volvo; with the new V60 T6, I can now appreciate a station wagon. February 2015

Personal Story: My Dream, My Car, My Mercedes-Benz C230

grew up in a small village in India. Our only methods of transportation were our bikes or by foot, so whenever we saw a car come to our village, it was always a novelty. We were always pondering and guessing how rich one would have to be to actually OWN a car? Thus, when we first arrived in America and were picked up by my uncles from LAX airport, we were surprised to see so many cars on the roads. It was my first time in a car and for me, it was an amazing experience. So you can imagine that the thought of OWNING my own car was not just a dream, but a real possibility in the very near future. When I finally bought my first car, I was very excited and happy because this had always been a dream of mine. As the years passed, I bought many different makes and models, but the rides were never as comfortable as I wanted. This was very important to me since most of my jobs required me to drive more than a radius of 250 miles. Eventfully, after some years, I had the opportunity to drive a Mercedes Benz. This was such an amazing experience that I decided my next car would be a Mercedes. Well, in 2012, I was driving by Mercedes dealership and a sleek C230 caught my eye. I decided to stop. Next thing you know, 45 minutes later I was the proud owner of my first Mercedes Benz. Ever since I purchased my Mercedes, the thought of ever owning another brand is next to impossible in my mind. I truly feel that my C230 and I have created an unbreakable bond. Here are the reasons why. Body Style: I love the sleek body style of my C230. It is small enough to park in tight space, yet big enough to accommodate 4 people comfortably. Also, it has the look of a sports car with a touch of a luxury car. and luggage for my travel needs. Handling: I have a heavy foot when it comes to driving so I love the fact that when I press the gas paddle, the response of my C230 is immediate with no lag time. Whenever I am driving on a bumpy road, it does not feel as if the car is going to fall apart as compared to prior cars I’ve owned. In a recent trip from LA to Sacramento, at the end of my journey, I did not experience the aches and pains that I had endured with previously owned cars. Interior: Of course, it’s all about the interior. I love that the interior of the C230 is very ergonomically designed. You can pretty much navigate anything form your steering wheel. The dashboard controls are easily accessible from both the passenger and driver side. The interior has a very futuristic look that is 10 years ahead of its time, which will definitely help the resale value of the car. Safety & Reliability: Last but not least, safety and reliability are very important to me. Being a female, I don’t want to be stranded in the middle of nowhere. In the time that I have owned this vehicle, there have been no major issues. Since this car sits lower than normal, it feels safer when I make sharp turns. I really like the ABS braking system since it responds immediately and smoothly. I especially was impressed during a rain storm when I had to brake quickly because vehicle in front of me stopped fast. Since the first day I saw and drove a Mercedes, I’ve always wanted to own one. Mercedes has an excellent reputation and the company makes safe vehicles. Styling is great; now I understand why Mercedes has great appeal to consumers. I am very happy and proud of my purchase of my C230, and I’m confident that my next purchase will be another Benz.

fter more than half of century of rough years, Indian Motorcycle Manufacturing Company finally began to stand on its own two feet. The latest example, the Indian Chief Vintage, is essentially a modern interpretation of the original iconic classic heavy cruiser, but with well-thought out improvements and enhancements. In the process, the company was able to eliminate most of the issues that seemed to have afflict the earlier attempts in reviving this icon. Based upon the Indian Chief that was first introduced in 1922, the Indian Chief Vintage is a classiclooking bike with a modern center-piece at its heart. Vintage indeed, as the 2015 Indian Chief Vintage bike really looks as if it comes from the middle of the last century. The Vintage Chief is a good-looking retro two-wheeler that has just enough contemporary touches to make it both highly comfortable and performance-oriented. It was a great day when Polaris Industries bought Indian’s rights as the whole lineup of Chief Indians is now meticulously designed and offer great performance. The two-tone paint options, which date back some 8 decades, represent one of the most iconic features in the Indian Chief’s appearance. This means that besides solid red and thunder black, Vintage models will now be offered in two-tone combination of these two, plus red/ivory cream and willow green/ivory cream combinations. Design-wise, the ultra-comfortable seat and spacious saddlebags feature new desert tan leather designed to withstand the elements. This sealed, high-quality leather is strong and durable, perfectly complementing the traditional Indian Motorcycle style. The protective windshield features Indian’s Quick Release Technology, so it can be installed or removed in just minutes. With the all new Vintage key fob in your pocket, climb on the bike, push a button and ride. If you misplace the fob, don’t worry; just use the individual security code that you pre-programmed into the ignition – impressive. The Thunder Stroke 111 engine delivers an incredible 119 ft-lbs of torque and features styling that pays tribute to legendary Indian Motorcycle engines of the past. Even though the bike is heavy, weighing over 801 pounds 18

on an empty tank and 835 pounds with full tank of gas, it still performs quite well and offers an enjoyable ride. The engine produces a rich exhaust note from the true dual exhausts. The exhaust is acoustically engineered to eliminate high-pitched sounds, so what you really hear is Indian thunder. One of the classic elements of an Indian Motorcycle is the vintage badging. Ever since the Indian script logo was first created in 1910, this feature has made the Indian Motorcycle badging a hallmark of this historic brand. Recognizable full valenced fenders, standard Anuraag J Singh since 1940, are also here, as vdrag.wordpress.com is the aforementioned retrostyled engine with corresponding exhausts. Gauges consist of a tank mounted electronic speedometer and odometer which together display all the relevant info. Standard equipment includes ABS, cruise control and keyless start too. The telescopic 4.7-inch fork travels 46 mm and is responsible for front suspension, while rear suspension is made of a single 3.7-inch shock. Braking feels a little vague and soft on initial application, but have good feel and plenty of effect, with just a little bit of front dive. The ABS is very smooth and non-intrusive. The 2015 Indian Chief Vintage has a 20.8 liter fuel tank that allows solid range for a standard/cruiser motorbike. Fuel economy is rated at 6.36 L/100km in the city and 5.35 L/100km on the highway for a 6.03 L/100km combined. Prices start from $ 23,399 for a Thunder Black model, while the solid red costs $24,499. On the other hand, if you want to make an impact, selecting the two-tone colour combinations will set you back a little more money. The bottom line is that you may be able to find a faster bike with sportier attributes, but you’re not likely to find a more pleasant ride or one that stirs a more positive emotional response. I give the 2015 Indian Chief Vintage a thumbs up. It is a smooth, well balanced iconic style bagger.

Certainty in Uncertain Times

n a recent meeting with a client of mine, the conversation turned to the news of numerous job losses across the province of British Columbia resulting from store closures at Sony, Target and Chapters on Robson Street. For many local residents there is a genuine feel of uncertainty and anxiety as with recent licensing developments at Port Metro Vancouver hundreds of local truckers will be looking for new jobs, as will those in the already weak resources sector as equity markets dry up. Fearful of the recent events my client asked what they could do to prepare for a similar decline in their industry sector. While many macro

events are out of our control, I shared with my client words of wisdom imparted to me from a successful business owner who I had met a few years ago: “Plan for success, stay the course, but know you can only control the controllable”. Successful businesses adopt a focus on strategic planning and are constantly looking for opportunities to further their operations and not become stagnant or dependent. These business owners regularly review their performance and are proactive in making the necessary changes to their business model before negative events occur. Mentality and attitude also play a role. Often overlooked, we are pessimistic and allow doubt to creep into our mindset and it clouds our

illing your tires with air may seem free but its costing you up to $300 a year in increased fuel and tire costs. Unless you are constantly checking and maintaining your tire pressure (how many of us actually do?), you are constantly driving with tires that aren’t properly inflated. That means your tire’s tread life could be reduced by as much as 25%. Improper tire inflation pressure will allow the tire to deflect (bend) more as it rolls. This will build up internal heat, increase rolling resistance and cause a reduction in fuel economy of up to 10%. And if your riding a motorcycle, you already know how vital properly inflated tires are for your safety! So why use Nitrogen? Drivers need to understand that the mostcritical factor for maximizing tire life, tire safety and performance is maintaining the proper inflation pressure in their tires and Nitrogen is the best solution. The benefits of nitrogen inflation have been extensively documented and are irrefutable. With increased media exposure and an increase in tire dealers and service centers offering nitrogen, consumers recognize and appreciate the benefits of nitrogen now more than ever as the overwhelming quantity of the ‘new’ facts and findings regarding nitrogen inflation coming out is quite positive. The scientific data that is available is irrefutable: nitrogen doesn’t permeate through a tire like the oxygen in compressed air, hence tires last longer and fuel economy and safety is enhanced. The result is increased tire life, improved fuel economy, improved performance and handling, extended tread life, and better retention of tire pressure than those filled with air. Do I still have to check the pressure in my tires? Industry research has shown that when asked if they checked their tire pressure regularly, most consumers admit that they don’t and a number never do, therefore tire manufacturers recommends that consumers check their pressure monthly or before any long journey. If your on a motorcycle, you want to check before every ride! Keep in mind, Nitrogen will keep your tire properly inflated 5-6x longer than air, but regular checks of tire condition and pressures will still be essential. 22

And just as important, Tire pressure must be checked with a quality air gauge, as tire inflation pressure cannot be accurately estimated through visual inspection. One of the prevalent misconceptions with Nitrogen is that you can only top up your tires with Nitrogen. Not true at all. Once your tires are filled with Nitrogen (with at least a 95% purity level), you won’t negatively affect the purity by topping up with air because the air you are putting back in already has 78% nitrogen. More on that in the next article. What Happens When You Mix Energy Drinks with Alcohol

ranslucent and neon coloured energy drinks are marketed towards young and middle aged people promising them a rush of energy and a taste for adventure sports. Even though their popularity has soared ten-fold in the last few years, they remain largely misunderstood. Doctors and researchers have warned people of the dangers of drinking caffeinated energy drinks over and over again. Research shows that they can change the way the heart beats which means rapid heart rates, palpitations, rise in blood pressure and in some severe cases, seizures or even death. They can also cause the body to lose all its water, dehydrating you in the process. Another 2014 study said that a certain energy drink has as many as 13 teaspoons of sugar and the equivalent caffeine of two cups of coffee! A study published in the British Journal of Nutrition claimed that energy drinks also cause insomnia and nervousness. As the exhaustive list of the health hazards of energy drinks goes on, we have a new problem What happens when you mix energy drinks with alcohol? In 2014, an Australian study that was published in ‘Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research’ found that mixing vodka with energy drinks makes you want to drink more. Another weird fact the study revealed was that people who consumed energy drinks had lower breath alcohol concentration - so in a way, energy drinks mask the smell of alcohol. Researchers believe that this could have had something to do with the high sugar content and carbs that the drink has. A new study published in the journal Advances in Nutrition says that the alcohol and energy drink combination isn’t just a personal risk, but a public hazard. Cecile Marczinski, professor of psychology at Northern Kentucky University was quoted saying, “When people mix energy drinks with alcohol, people drink more than they would if they had just consumed alcohol, which is associated with a cascade of problems.” There is an increased risk of engaging in risky behaviour like drunk driving. The high amount of caffeine makes a person behave more coordinated which makes them believe they’re not actually drunk. Marczinski also cited a study which said that those who mixed alcohol with energy drinks were four times more likely to believe they can drive home when compared to their counterparts who drank alcohol alone. This paves way to road accidents and endless mishaps. Alcohol with energy drinks is a disaster waiting to happen. Energy drinks don’t come with a health warning but experts believe they should. In fact, in May last year, the American Medical Association called for a ban on the marketing of energy drinks to children and teenagers. Energy drink makers were quick to defend themselves and one of the brands said that they’ve always committed to ensuring that all of the ingredients in its energy drinks, including caffeine, are safe and in regulatory compliance for their intended use. The debate about whether energy drinks and alcohol make a good combination or not remains inconclusive but what we can all do is to be more mindful of what we give our body.

2016 Chevy Volt

f the few electric cars that are making their mark in North America, the Chevy Volt has been a fan favourite in this segment. General Motors said that the new Volt is, “the most customer-inspired car to be launched in recent history.” The older Volt was facing the same problem as other electric cars – poor electric mileage. Although an electric range of about 35 miles wasn’t too bad at all, owners were hoping for more. As a result, the newer 2016 model should be able to extend that range an additional 15 miles, topping out at 50 miles. Inside, the Volt isn’t your Tesla, but it’s not a bad looking vehicle. Initial snap shots suggest that the 2016 model will have better plastics and more supportive seats as compared to the outgoing model. Also, the rear buckets will be replaced by a hump-straddling bench seat, allowing more passenger capacity and thus, a better choice for families. The 2016 model should be available in late summer of 2015. 26

hen the 2015 Ford F-150 debuted in shows across North America last year, it was the talk of the town. Becoming the white elephant in the room, Ford took a huge gamble when it decided to build the 2015 F-150 with an all-aluminum body. This revolutionary new body, combined with a lighter high strength steel frame, shaves off over 700 pounds in weight as compared to the outgoing model. That’s a huge number to take in when average weight savings of about 50 pounds are thought to be great. This first could be a game changer for pick-ups. The new body also meant a new look for this truck. Yes, it still looks like a Ford, but styling cues from the 2013 Atlas concept truck are clearly visible, and welcome. So, all the design features aside, how does the new 2015 F-150 drive? Surprisingly well, in fact. I was able to test the truck over a few days and was surprised at the differences. One notable difference was the quiet interior – not that the outgoing model was loud, but the 2015 is just quieter. Ride quality was excellent and the F-150 didn’t really feel and handle like a pick-up truck, but rather a large sedan. The oversized seats provide excellent comfort for long or short drives. For rear passengers, there is good legroom, and if you choose the Supercrew setup, there is more legroom than a BMW 750i at 43.6” – so stretch out and relax in comfort. Another gem for this new F-150 is the all-new 2.7 liter Ecoboost V6 engine, which produces 325 hp and 375 lb-ft of torque. Add the new start/stop technology and this engine produces an impressive 10.9 L/100 km fuel efficiency rating. Initially I didn’t have high expectations for this engine, but once I drove it, I was impressed. Power delivery is effortless as the Ecoboost churns out about 17-18 pounds of boost to really get you moving. A couple of my friends couldn’t believe the power coming out of such a small motor. If you really need a bigger engine, you can still get the 3.5 liter naturally aspirated V6, 3.5 liter Ecoboost V6, or the 5.0 liter V8. In all honesty, I think the 2.7 liter will be best-selling of the bunch. The 2015 Ford F-150 is going to be the catalyst for change in pick-ups. This vehicle has so many class exclusive features, such as the 360 degree camera, inflatable rear outboard safety belts, stowable loading ramps, and remote tailgate release, that other models are scrambling to keep up. I can see a lot of SUV/crossover owners who might just opt for this new F-150.

e open our eyes. We reach. We scratch. We claw for our phones. We unlock, tap, scroll. We see photos from the parties we don’t go to, the dinners we don’t eat and the weddings we’re not even close to having. We double-tap. We comment, “I miss you so much, wish I could have been there last night”; “I wish I could cook like this”; “You look beautiful. You two are made for each other.” We compliment; we cheat; we flirt endlessly with social media, instead of looking at someone’s face or looking into someone’s eyes. We’re replacing lips for keyboards and heartbeats for message tones. Sounding familiar? I read a quote the other day that read, “Don’t compare your beginning to someone else’s middle.” I think it’s brilliant. In eight words, some clever chap has wrapped up all that is wrong with our Millennial lives and thrown these words like confetti over our heads. We are suspended in a constant state of comparison. Bodies, wealth, career, relationships — as soon as our eyes open we are entering into the same cycle. I’ll admit it: I get restless. Like everyone else, I have a big list of things to do in my mind, and I want them all done at once and out of the way, and all the time, it never, ever works. We want immediacy — an instant message, an instant comment, an instant tick that will make our heads flip and our hearts whole. So, here is a proposal for everyone, myself included, on how to slow down and attempt a streamlined life. 1. Break away from social media. Have a cut-off point in the evening to stop boredom-scrolling yourself into a panicked mess. Seeing what people have done with their days when you may or may not have been watching back-to-back episodes of “Breaking Bad” all day long while nursing multiple cups of tea is not a great motivator to end your day on. So, even though you may feel inclined to send future-proofing emails at 2 am, fuelled by faux social media pressure, it’s probably not the best idea. Get ideas out of your head and onto some paper, close the book and then leave it for the morning. Besides, writing is easier with coffee in hand. And, you don’t want anymore caffeine at 2 am. 2. Put your phone on silent. Simple, isn’t it? 32

Leave calls or emails on loud if necessary, but let the constant chirp of WhatsApp subside, let Snapchat silence and let Twitter snooze in a nest of quiet for a while. When you’re trying to do something that requires your concentration, it’s near impossible when you get stuck watching your phone as it shimmies closer to the edge of the table with every message vibration. Stop unnecessarily challenging your attention. Just make it simple. 3. Be realistic. While it may be fun to set challenging resolutions for the year ahead, be realistic with time frames. It’s great to better yourself and carve new paths, but you can’t fill a bath with new skills and soak them all up like a sponge in one evening. (Although, someone should invent this. I would bulk order.) Things take time; don’t rush this and enjoy the time it takes to learn. 4. Try to stop comparing. I could squash this paragraph full of clichés, but I’m going to try something designed to be constructive. Accept moments for what they are — good or bad, exciting or mundane. If you don’t like something, try to change it. Don’t worry yourself with other people’s achievements, or compare yourself to how far someone the same age or younger than you has come. Everyone falls; we just don’t run online to tell everyone about the day we cried until we were breathless, when we cared too much when we didn’t get the call or when we were crushed when we realized someone had moved on without us. We’re all human; we all feel the same. It’s just scheduled at different times for different people. And, in any case, you could be two days away from starting all over again — and starting fresh is fun. It’s like getting a new textbook at school: It’s a bit scary, you feel pressured to use your best handwriting and keep everything neat in the beginning, but somewhere down the line, this ebbs away and things become more natural. Mistakes happen, so we cross them out and we try again. Life isn’t a race; there is no agreed finish line or time in which to complete it. Slow down, enjoy small moments and try to stop comparing every small step you take to someone else’s stride.

Nissan Reports a 23.6% Rise in Net Income Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. today announced improved financial results for the nine months to December 31, 2014, as solid U.S. sales, cost efficiencies and favorable currency movements contributed to a 23.6% rise in net income to $3.2 billion (338.8 billion yen). Operating profit rose to 417.9 billion yen for the period, representing a 5.2% margin on net revenues that climbed 11.1% to 8.09 trillion yen. “Nissan delivered solid financial results in the first nine months of the fiscal year, reflecting rising U.S. sales of our latest models and a normalizing yen-dollar exchange rate,” said Carlos Ghosn, president and chief executive officer. “We anticipate good full-year results as our product offensive and positive momentum in North America and Western Europe offsets volatility in other markets. Given these trends, along with the continuing impact of currency movements and cost controls, we are today revising upward our full-year financial forecast.”

Harley-Davidson has named Matt Levatich as its new CEO. Levatich will replace current CEO Keith Wandell starting May 1, 2015. Levatich has an undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and also a masters degree in engineering management and an MBA from Northwestern University. He joined Harley in 1994 and is currently the COO and president of Harley-Davidson Motor Co. hat better vehicle to include in our classic car than the one that began the automobile era by utilizing the mass producing assembly line? Sure, there were other cars built before the famous Model T, including ones built by Ransom Olds, Karl Benz, and Wilhelm Maybach; but Henry Ford perfected the assembly line and was able to produce a complete car in about 93 minutes. The Model T was not Ford’s first vehicle; in fact, Ford had designed close to twenty prototypes before the Model T, going as far back as 1903. But happy with the design and engineering of the Model T, Ford pushed production in 1914 to amounts never seen or heard of before. Not only was the Model T an attractive vehicle, it could be purchased by the average American with about four month’s salary. Ford’s Model T could be bought as a convertible or hardtop and

was fitted with a 2.0 liter inline four-cylinder engine that produced 20 hp and could reach a top speed lose to 70 km/h. The engine could be run on kerosene, gasoline, or ethanol, but gasoline became preferred due to its decreasing costs. Since the Model T was “affordable” compared to other cars, they began to be seen all over. Sure, there wasn’t much competition either, but people enjoyed the comfort levels of this car and now, could travel at their discretion. The driver controlled the transmission by three foot pedals, while throttle was controlled with a lever on the steering column. Ride comfort was good, but increased significantly when balloon tires were introduced in 1925. The Model T’s last year of production was in 1927. Not only had this car changed the automotive industry, but was instrumental in the use of vehicles in various industries. February 2015

Glimpses of Indian Roads

During the winter months, my family and I took a long and overdue vacation to India. Not only did we attend a couple of family weddings, we did some sight-seeing. I had not been back to India for almost 15 years, and for my daughters, it was their first time. Before the trip, we were nervous that my daughters might find it hard to adjust to India; but thankfully, they enjoyed every minute of it. Here are some glimpses of Indian Roads during our trip. In the next issue of DRK, we shall include some more pictures of Indian life.

Indian Chief Dark Horse photos leaked In a few days, the Indian Chief Dark Horse went from being a rumored model spotted in

a CARB document, to officially announced in an upcoming ride (this week), to having spy shots released early. Those photos, which ran on Asphalt & Rubber (thanks to good guy Jensen Beeler for letting us run them), show what we all expected – a blacked-out cruiser that follows

the pattern set by so many other motorcycle manufacturers in recent years. We reckon the reason for the gratuitous coating of black paint is to keep costs down, but maybe some people actually like this look. Although Polaris subsidiary Indian had first come to market with bikes featuring throwback lines and classic paint and styling, this model is the first sign of a more realistic vision: Not every rider wants tasseled leather and whitewall tires. Also, no custom builder feels like paying top dollar for retro geegaws and then having to throw them away. So, the Dark Horse might not have the same impact as Indian’s first releases. However, it is a sign of things to come – it seems Indian will be around a while, and models like this will be an important part of their lineup.

Energica coming to Canada The Energica Motor Company, Italian manufacturer of the Energica Ego electric superbike, is entering the Canadian market. W.C. Distributing of Heisler, Alberta, is the first Canadian dealer for the Energica brand. Canada is just the lat-

Q1: Why is it necessary to put premium fuel in my car? Can I not just use mid-grade instead of premium and save some money? A1: Different engines require different grades of fuel, depending on the design of the motor. If your engine manufacturer recommends a premium gasoline, I would stick with it. The engine is built to run optimally with the specified fuel octane rating. Using a lower level octane fuel could cause your engine to pre-detonate, or combust too early, which may cause a lack of power in your motor and an engine ping to occur. This causes extreme wear on your engine components and crankcase breather systems. To simply answer your question, I do not believe using a lower grade gasoline will save you any money in the long run. Having a heavier foot to get the power and additional wear and carbon build up on engine components is not worth it. Q2: My husband has a set of summer tires and wheels and a set of winters. I think it’s a waste of money. Isn’t it better to just have all-seasons for all year use? A2: There are a few key benefits in having two set of tires. Number one is safety; even here in Vancouver, nothing beats a good winter tire when it’s snowy or cold out. A winterrated tire’s rubber is made up of a slightly different compound as compared to an allseason. The winter tire will actually get more “sticky” in colder temperatures, whereas an all-season tire gets hard in temperatures under 7 degrees Celsius, creating less traction on the road. Another benefit longevity; simply, having an additional set will prolong the life of each set tires. Every time we pull your tires off, they will get inspected for proper wear, nails and pressures. 40

DRK News / Views / Stuff Q3: Is it a good idea to let your car warm up in the winter before driving for a few minutes or is this unnecessary? A3: It is always a good idea to let your engine warm up before driving. Upon engine start-up, I like to give it at least a minute, depending on outside temperature. This helps all your vehicle’s electrical components better “talk” to each other and get coolant flowing. Also, when your engine is cold, most the oil is sitting at the bottom and moisture may have some built up inside the crankcase. The oil needs some time warm up to burn off any moisture, and start flowing again, lubing all the ports and engine components. Warming up your vehicle is good practice and will help prolong the life of your engine. I like a good warm up before a workout; thus, I can only assume my motor does as well.

ayer upon layer of bulky winter gear helps Canadians to ward off the season’s bite for a time, but there are other ways to keep the persistent cold at bay for the long term. The Canadian Health Food Association (CHFA) recommends a winter regime of exercise, a hearty and healthy diet, and natural health support to keep you warm, even through the worst of the season. Exercise Regular exercise gets the blood pumping and blood vessels dilating, helping to distribute warmth to our extremities. A good workout also burns calories, a process that produces lasting heat, so keep moving. The rush of endorphins we get from exercising is another important benefit, especially in winter, because they help to balance our mood and combat the “winter blues”, or seasonal affective disorder (SAD). If the gym is not your thing, try Ashtanga yoga, an activity that teaches special breathing techniques to promote internal body heat, as well as mindfulness to combat stress. Hearty Diet What we eat and drink has a lasting effect on our ability to keep warm. In particular, spicy foods help to raise our metabolism, which allows our bodies to produce heat faster. Try using ginger, cayenne pepper, and more garlic when you prepare hearty meals, as well as other nutrient-rich ingredients like tomatoes, leafy greens, and beans. In addition, water is great at retaining heat, so drinking eight to 10 cups of water a day, will keep you hydrated and warm. Drinking herbal teas or infusing your water with seasonal fruits adds nutritional benefits and flavour.
