DRK Editorial

Editor’s Note

Jag Dhatt Editor-in-Chief

Welcome to the first issue of DRK Magazine for the 2015 calendar year. The entire DRK management, production, and distribution teams wish all of our readers and clients nothing but the best for the upcoming year. After 15 years, I had the opportunity to travel to my birthplace, Punjab, India, during the month of December. It was a great opportunity and what’s more, my daughters loved the trip. In the February issue of DRK Magazine, we will be including lots of pictures of vehicles and my driving experiences in India. Look forward to these. That being said, our classic pick is the Hindustan Ambassador, the pride of India for almost 40 years. In this issue of DRK, we continue to have advice from our experts, Zack Spencer, Leah Gillanders, Ryan Sahota, yours truly, and of course, our other regular contributing writers. Zack Spencer reviews the new GMC Denali and I look at the new Infiniti QX80 and the Ford Transit Connect. If you’re looking at buying a cruiser, take a good hard look at the Victory Gunner, a pretty impressive bike. If you’re travelling with pets during the winter season, pay attention to some very important notes as our pets are also valuable members of our family. In closing, the entire DRK team is proud that 2014 was a successful year. We look forward to bringing our readers more great stories from the world of automobiles, motorcycles, and everything else related. Have a wonderful, productive, and happy 2015. fI Awr ky dy 2015 dy pihly AMk v`loN quhwfw svwgq[ fI Awr ky dI smu`cI mYnyjmYNt, pRofkSn Aqy ifstrIibaUSn tIm v`loN Awpxy pwTkW nUM nvW swL mubwrk hovy Aqy swfI Ardws hY ik ieh quhwfy leI KuSIAW Aqy KyVy lY ky Awvy[ pMdrW swl qoN bwAd dsMbr dy mhIny ‘c mYnUM pMjwb (ieMfIAw) ‘c AwpxI jnm BUmI dy drSn krn dw mOkw imilAw [ ieh mOkw bhuq vDIAw sI [ sB qoN v`fI g`L ieh ik myrIAW DIAW ny ies tir`p dw bhuq AwnMd mwixAw[ fI Awr ky dy PrvrI dy AMk ‘c AsIN Bwrq dIAW bhuq swrIAW vhIklW dIAW qsvIrW dy nwL Awpxy fRweIivMg dy qjrby vI sWJy krWgy[ ienHW dI aufIk kro[ ies ‘c swfI klwisk cox hY 40 swl qoN Bwrq dw mwx smJI jWdI ihMdusqwn AYNbYsyfr[ ies AMk ‘c vI AsIN pihlW vWg Awpxy mwihrW zYk spYNsr, lIA gweIlYNfrz, rwien shoqw, mYN quhwfw syvk, Aqy Awpxy hor lyKkW dy lyK id`qy hn[ zYk spYNsr v`loN nvIN jI AYm sI fYnwlI sbMDI irivaU iliKAw hY[ myry v`loN ieniPntI AYks 80 Aqy Porf tRWizt kunYkt sbMDI iliKAw hY[ jy qusIN bweIk lYx dw mn bxw rhy ho qW ivktrI gMnr nUM Tok vjw ky vyKo, jo bhuq hI vDIAw bweIk hY[ jy qusIN Awpxy pwlqU jwnvrW nwL ies srdI dy mOsm ‘c sPr krn dw ierwdw r`Kdy ho qW sbMDq g`lW v`l zrUr iDAwn dyxw ikauN ik auh vI quhwfy pirvwr dy v`fmu`ly mYNbr ju hoey[ AMq ‘c mYN ieh kihxw cwhuMdw hW ik swl 2014 swfy leI bhuq hI kwmXwb swl irhw[ swfI idlI qmMnw hY ik AsIN ies swl vI Awpxy pwTkW leI ivSv Br dIAW AwtomobweIlW, motr sweIklW Aqy ienHW nwL sbMDq hr ie`k cIz sbMDI lyKW rwhIN jwxkwrI dyeIey[ pRmwqmw kry swl 2015 quhwfy leI KuSI Aqy kmweI leI vDIAw swl hovy!

New Mercedes GLE – Fusion of Coupe and Crossover If you’ve been sizing up the new BMW X6, you might want to take a moment before signing on the dotted line, because Mercedes has just taken the wraps off a sporty coupé-styled SUV of its own. The GLE Coupé won’t be going on sale until mid-2015, but Mercedes has chosen to announce it just in time for big kids to add it to their Christmas lists. And rather than simply being a curvaceous sedan on stilts with oversized tires and chunky side moldings, the company claims that the new vehicle really is a fusion between a real SUV and a sports coupé and a

big one at that. The car is 4.9 metres long, 2 m wide and 1.7 m tall. The GLE Coupé comes with permanent four-wheel-drive as standard and a nine-speed automatic transmission, plus a host of electronic handling and stability controls that should keep the car in check and behaving as intended, even in tricky situations. For instance, it gets the same active curve system that recently debuted on the company’s flagship S Class. This actively moves or tilts the body in an equal and opposite direction when cornering hard for instance or negotiating potholes -- keeping the car ‘flat’ and mitigating body roll, something that’s a bigger issue in vehicles with a higher ground clearance. At launch it will be available with a V6, 3-liter turbodiesel engine or a V6 3-liter biturbo petrol engine. However, expect most interest to be focused on the AMG sport variant that will sit above the standard range but below the company’s true AMG models. In November at the LA Auto Show, Mercedes announced that it was introducing the new AMG Sport line across its range as

a stepping-stone between its standard cars and its often ferocious AMG sportscars, and the GLE Coupé is the first model to get the treatment. “The GLE 450 AMG Coupé is our first sports model, and further highly emotional and performance-oriented models will follow in the near future. The new product line from Mercedes-AMG has allowed us to make true sports car technology and the fascination of motorsports more accessible,” says Tobias Moers, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH. “Every vehicle from Affalterbach honors the brand promise of Driving Performance.” So, go for the GLE 450 AMG Coupé and the 3-liter V6 will offer 367hp rather than the 333hp from the standard model, plus 520Nm of torque (up from 480 on the standard car). The four-wheel-drive system will also favor the rear

wheels, sending 60% of the power to the back and 40% to the front for a more sporty, dynamic feel. And of course the styling will be turned up a notch, inside and out. The exterior gets a reworked front and rear apron and a different rear spoiler. It also sits on special AMG alloy wheels and the cabin gets a carbon fiber rather than wood grain trim. As such, it could make for some seriously entertaining driving. However, it’s also more than likely that just like BMW’s X6 which comes in a full-blown ‘M’ package with almost supercar levels of performance, that an equally full-blown, true AMG version of the GLE Coupé is also coming soon. Ford Chooses Blackberry for New In-car Touch-screen System Ford Motor Co is dropping Microsoft in favour of Blackberry Ltd’s QNX for Sync 3 in its upcoming vehicle line-up. Previous generations of Sync and MyFord Touch performed poorly in Consumer Reports’ surveys. The new Sync system will be more intuitive, sport improved voice-recognition software and operate more like a smartphone than the first two generations, the last of which was distracting, clumsy, and overly complex, according to Consumer Reports.

Chief Technology Officer Raj Nair said Ford put a lot of effort into finding out what consumers wanted, including drawing on 22,000 consumer comments. He said that Sync 3 was the most heavily researched program in Ford’s history. The new version was developed over 18 months, and includes a simplified layout, larger fonts, and bigger finger touch zones. Sync 3 will begin to appear in new cars and trucks in North America next fall for model year 2016 and will be available across its North American lineup by the end of 2016 for the 2017 model year. Honda Milestone: 300 Million Motorcycles

Achieving a milestone more than 65 years in the making, Honda Motor Co., Ltd. recently announced production of its 300-millionth motorcycle. The milestone bike is a Honda Gold Wing produced at the company’s Kumamoto Factory in Japan. Honda will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the iconic Gold Wing in 2015. Honda began mass production of motorcycles in Japan in 1949 when it built the Honda 98 cc Dream Type-D. Today, Honda produces motorcycles, ATV’s and side-by-sides at 32 plants in 22 countries, including two plants in North America. In 1958, Honda introduced the Honda 50, known globally as the Super Cub, which would go on to revolutionize the industry. This iconic bike paved the way for Honda’s expansion into the U.S. in 1959 and Canada in 1969. The Super Cub, which has sold nearly 90 million units globally since its inception, was the focus of a mid1960s advertising campaign, ‘You Meet the Nicest People on a Honda,’ that played a major role in the transformation and growth of the U.S. motorcycle market. Today, Honda operates 17 major manufacturing facilities in North America, producing a wide range of Honda and Acura automobiles, automobile engines and transmissions, Honda all-terrain vehicles and side-by-sides, power equipment products and the HondaJet light jet.

VW’s Bentley Raises Car Sales Target on New Models Volkswagen’s ultra-luxury brand Bentley has raised its target for sales as the British carmaker plans to add models such as its first ever sport-utility vehicle, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung reported. Bentley is now targeting 20,000 annual deliveries by 2020, double its 2013 sales and an expansion of the brand’s original goal of pushing sales to 15,000 models by 2018, the newspaper said, citing the brand’s chief executive Wolfgang Duerheimer. Bentley made about 11,000 deliveries in 2013 with revenue and operating profit rising to $2.1 billion. Sales, revenue and profit may all grow further this year, the CEO said. The 95 year-old brand is diversifying its model line-up and plans to decide on a fifth model line by next autumn. 8

As Gas Prices Increase, So Do Motorcycle Accidents As gas prices rose in recent years, so did motorcyclist injuries and deaths, a new study suggests. In times of gas increases, more people start using motorcycles and many of those riders are inexperienced, the researchers explained. They examined data gathered between 2002 and 2011 in California, which has the highest number of motorcycle registrations in the United States and the third highest number of motorcyclist deaths. The analysis revealed a strong association between rising gas prices and an increasing number of motorcycle registrations, along with motorcyclist injuries and deaths. But it did not prove a cause-and-effect link. Between 2002 and 2011, higher gas prices resulted in an additional 800 deaths and 10,290 injuries among motorcyclists in California, according to the study published online in the journal Injury Prevention. Crashes were more likely to occur in urban areas and during the afternoon. Of the motorcyclists involved in crashes, nearly 93 percent were men, 46 percent were middleaged, and 68 percent were white. Riders ages 16 to 24 and those on the latest models of motorcycles were most likely to be involved in at-fault crashes. The study also found that one in five injured riders was uninsured. Along with mandatory helmet laws, other ways to reduce motorcycle injuries and deaths include compulsory training, stricter licensing tests and raising other drivers’ awareness of motorcycles, the researchers said.

Brand New Lamborghini Ticketed & Towed The driver of a new Lamborghini worth $275,000 will have to shell out $368 for a speeding ticket after police caught him driving over twice the speed limit. Vancouver police tweeted out a picture of the vehicle being loaded on to the back of a tow truck after the driver was tagged with a laser going 102 km/h in a 50 km/h zone. Constable Brian Montague, the VPD’s spokesman and the officer who ticketed the speeder, said the driver was “very shocked” to see the police when he was flagged down on Cambie Street near 54th Avenue. The 30-year-old driver received a $368 speeding ticket and three demerit points on his licence. The vehicle, which had dealer licence plates, was impounded for seven days. Police confirmed the vehicle is owned by a dealership, but would not identify the driver. The vehicle is a 2015 Lamborghini Huracan which was just released a few weeks ago. One of its top-selling features is the company’s claim it can go from a dead stop to 100 kilometres an hour in just over 2.5 seconds — a report that was independently confirmed by Car and Driver under actual test conditions.

The Harley-Davidson Project Livewire™ Experience will be coming to the Powersport Services (PSS) motorcycle shows across the country this winter! Project Livewire is a bold statement for us as a Company and a Brand.” The bike offers a visceral riding experience with tire-shredding acceleration and an unmistakable new sound. “The sound is a distinct part of the thrill,” said Richer. “Think fighter jet on an aircraft carrier. Project Livewire’s unique sound was designed to differentiate it from internal combustion and other electric motorcycles on the market.”

hoever still thinks that the Japanese make small cars hasn’t seen the new and improved 2015 Infiniti QX80 AWD. To say that this SUV is large is an understatement; it could probably use two postal codes. But after spending a week with this Limited model SUV, thanks to my friends at Open Road Infiniti in Langley, I gotta say, I really like it. January 2015 11

Gone are all letters big was maximized, my test vehicle came equipped with the huge such as G, FX, JX, etc.; they have all been replaced by 22” tire and wheel package as well. The QX80’s cavern is a dream come true for bigger and taller either a Q or a QX (indicating SUV). I don’t know if this was necpeople or even a large family. I’m 5’11” and stepping essary, but maybe Infiniti thought it would be simpler. inside the vehicle made me feel a few inches shorter. The QX80 looks like nothing else on the road. I don’t mind the design, but a few of my friends thought it looked like a hippo. Hmm….a easily with over 95 cubic feet of available cargo space hippo? Moving on, did I mention that the new QX80 with both second and third row seats folded down – that AWD is a behemoth? From whichever side you look is a lot of space. at it, this vehicle is huge, and it makes no attempt to Since the QX56 was redone a couple of years ago, hide that fact. moon roof. Not that the cabin needs to look bigger, but with a vehicle of this size, a panoramic roof is a must – what’s worse is that it’s not even an option. Other than that, my Limited model test vehicle was fully loaded with every available option. Getting into the QX80 was okay for me, but shorter people may have to get used to the high step-up; the running boards do help though. I was asked by some people what it felt like sitting in the QX80 – the best answer I can give is that it’s very very comfortable. The seats are like the recliners in your living room: big, roomy, and relaxing, complete with heating and cooling options for front passengers. If you’re planning on taking this SUV regularly on long road trips, get the heated/cooled seat option for sure. All passengers have ample leg and head room, but if you’re loading up the vehicle, put the kids in the third row. And, if you don’t need the bench option, I would suggest the captain chairs for the second row as well (both are the same price). The 2015 QX80 is powered by the same 5.6 liter V8 as last year and it’s a gem of an engine. With 400 horsepower and 413 lb-ft of torque, the V8 powerplant moves this Infiniti with relative ease, even if towing a boat. What I found impressive with this engine is that you don’t notice the power kicking in because the engine and mated 7-speed transmission are both so refined. Acceleration is smooth and quiet, almost too quiet if

you’re the more performance-oriented driver. Speaking of noiseless, the QX’s cabin is one of the quietest I’ve been in. There is virtually no engine or road noise; you might get a touch of wind noise, but that’s about it. I’m glad to see that more manufacturers are investing in interior acoustics and sound dampening. What really impressed me with the QX80 was the navigation, Bluetooth, and streaming capabilities. The voice-activated navigation system is one of the fastest and most accurate in the market. Whereas the voice controls systems in other vehicles are sluggish, Infiniti’s is very quick. Telephone communication via Bluetooth was excellent, as was streaming music from my phone. My Limited model came with the 15-speaker Bose system and if you’re an audiophile like me, don’t pass up on this option. Imagine driving down the highway, listening to your music genre in crystal clear quality, and LOUD. Another great feature of this vehicle is the AroundView 360 degree camera, which comes in handy when parking or maneuvering around tight areas. Put the vehicle in reverse and you can get a bird’s eye picture of the vehicle – I really liked this feature. Getting back to performance, or lack thereof, the steering doesn’t communicate very well with the driver and the ride is kind of doughy. Some may complain that the vehicle is not fun to drive, but the QX80 soaks up bumps on the road quite well, again, providing for a very comfortable ride. It’s kind of like comparing a speed boat to a small yacht – the QX80 won’t give you the speed and handling of a sports car, and clearly, this Infiniti is not aiming at such potential buyers. But this is a vehicle that I could see parked in my driveway for my own family. I like comfort and the QX80 provides just that. The 2015 Infiniti QX80 is a great SUV, especially since it offers the same off-road capabilities as most trucks, something other SUV’s usually lack. With so many power options available in this vehicle, you can customize the QX80 to your personal taste. I would suggest taking this vehicle for a test drive before looking at other brands as you may be thoroughly impressed – I was. January 2015

Safer Car Travel for Pets

Safer Car Travel for Pets pwlqU ku`iqAW ib`lIAW leI sur`iKAq kwr sPr

here are probably a number of people who have already travelled with their pets this holiday season and experienced the joys and stresses that can go along with it. Pets are part of the family and thus, make sure that their travels are enjoyable and safe. Before going further, the first thing pet owners must decide is whether to take along the family pet. If the answer is yes, then here are some tips by Chevrolet. If you do choose to take your pet with you, never let a pet ride in the front seat because they could be seriously injured or killed if the air bag deploys. It’s the same danger as allowing a toddler to sit in the front seat. Never leave a pet alone in the car. In the summer, they can get heatstroke and in the winter they can experience hypothermia. If you see a dog or cat in distress, call the local SPCA, or another emergency number, and report the pet to authorities. Identify pet-friendly restaurants, hotels and dog parks before you embark on your journey. The last thing you want to do is leave your pet tied up in one spot. Make sure your pet is current on vaccinations. Depending on where you’re headed, have your pet get additional vaccinations to protect against new threats such as canine Lyme disease, says Chevrolet. Find and program the number of a 24-hour emergency veterinarian in case of any emergencies. Carry a current photo. This will help in case you become separated from your pet. Your pet should also be micro-chipped, if possible. Your pets should be wearing a collar with a cell number. Never allow your dog to leave the vehicle without the collar, ID tag and leash. Specifically for cats, use a pet carrier or cargo barrier. Unrestrained pets can be injured in a crash or even take off if not 16

secured. Chevrolet suggests familiarizing your pet to the car by taking it on smaller trips before embarking on a longer vacation. This way, your pet is more comfortable. Consider packing a portable litter box, collapsible food and water bowls and pet first aid kits. Make sure you keep emergency materials that are relevant to your pet and if

in doubt, as your local veterinary clinic. To help prevent dehydration, freeze a bowl of water that your pet can lick to keep cool. It’s less messy than travelling with water. Following these simple suggestions can make your family, and pet, vacation a happy one.

2015 Victory Gunner

VICTORY

2015

GUNNER

F

rom its gray matte paint to its straight dual exhaust and solo seat, Victory Motorcycles’ new Gunner is targeting HarleyDavidson’s Softail Slim. Victory’s press information even uses the catty tagline, “Slim chance you’ll find another bobber like it.” The 2015 Victory Gunner features a minimalist gauge cluster that’s conveniently positioned and backlit for easy reading. It integrates a small digital screen providing a host of information that you can browse using the control near the left-hand grip. It starts with the mill. From dead stop to top gear, Vic’s Freedom 106 V-twin is a solid engine. For the retro-styled Gunner, Victory’s spec sheet claims 110 lb-ft of torque, and on a low-slung bike bereft of accouterments—this is nearly the lightest bike in the Victory line; only the Vegas 8-Ball weighs less—that power is tangible. Every gear shift is smooth and defined with the Victory 6-speed transmission with true overdrive. Its helical-cut gears ensure that each shift is smooth and sure. For interstate cruising, the 6th gear overdrive drops the RPMs and revs up a great ride experience. The challenging transmission on Victory motorcycles has received significant improvements over the years, and now allows sharp, clean shifts. While the clutch lever could still be easier to manipulate, most test riders onhand during the launch of the 2015 Victory Gunner said they liked the firm lever which contributes to a more rewarding riding experience. The fierce-sounding straight pipes and solo bucket saddle offer an aggressive, unvarnished riding experience that must be the inspiration for Victory calling the bike a “bobber”. The relatively wide, V-shaped handlebar combines with foot pegs that sit not too far up front for a fairly relaxed riding position. Of course, you can customize ergonomics at will thanks to the plethora of accessories from the Victory catalogue including custom handlebars, foot pegs and seats. There are also many exhaust systems to choose from if you’d like to squeeze more performance and testosterone out of your ride while still keeping your neighbours -- and the police -- on your good side. Speaking of wheels, the new black, bare metal-edged, 24-spoke cast aluminum numbers really help quantify the Gunner’s overall aggressive styling. They also shave off some weight, making the Gunner about 10 pounds lighter than its familial Judge and arm-draping Highball. The solo saddle on the Gunner was comfy for our day Anuraag J Singh ride, and the black, swept bar was an easy reach for this vdrag.wordpress.com average-size rider. Victory does sacrifice function for form in at least one area: While the Gunner’s optional red seat looks undeniably cool, its pan is hard and its lip intrusive. The Gunner is readily customizable via the Victory catalog, though, so there’s no need for owners to be stuck with that cool-but-uncomfortable saddle. At $15,499, the Gunner should appeal to retro V-twin aficionados looking for a stripped-down but sexy bike, whether or not you call it a bobber. The feeling you get once you straddle this cruiser may be worth every penny alone. Pros: • Powerful and reliable engine with sweet sound effects • Superb styling • Tremendous quality levels • Unbeatable value Cons: • Clutch lever is still hard to manipulate • Front brake lacks bite

he accounting profession is changing. The advent of new technology allowing the ability to collect and access data anywhere at any time, is affecting how Chartered Accountants will be used and our role in your personal and business ventures. The use of cloud-computing, apps, real-time analysis and data manipulation are allowing both individuals and business owners to better understand their cash flow needs and categorize expenses. The internet is a vast source of knowledge and with many well written blogs regarding tax, finance and accounting issues the level of savviness has increased. Next-generation accounting firms are going to be cloud-based and interconnected. The demand for increased specialization and the ability to provided advisory services that are forward-looking and planning-focused is increasing. With this evolution of accounting services, pricing and timelines are moving towards value based parceling with the client driving their specific needs. The introduction of the Internet of Things into the mainstream public is going to change forever how data is collected and analyzed and how business decisions are arrived at. I was asked recently by a business owner what they should be looking for in an accounting firm that is strategically placed to deal with these changes and the rapid evolution of technology. Quite simply the following traits should be available: 20

Quieter Vehicles,

hile driving down a street, you are probably exposed to all kinds of sounds. Often times, these can be louder than your radio, other passengers, or can be just plain irritating. Long drives, especially in cars with poor acoustics, can lead to headaches for travelers as well. I remember during a road trip vacation to California in an older Honda Accord, there was a lot of road noise. Having to raise your voice to be heard over the sound of the car, listening to the constant noise of the engine can be irritating. Well, the solution

is not difficult and now, most car manufacturers are investing more money in sound proofing, so that rides are much more enjoyable. There are different materials that are used in sound proofing and it’s important to know the differences and purposes of them. Sound is energy, specifically, energy produced from vibrations. When something vibrates, the energy given off (sound) has to go somewhere, so it travels outward making other objects and the air vibrate until it dissipates. Generally, when people think 22

DRK News / Views / Stuff of sound proofing materials, they think of using foams and other related materials. These substances, however, do not block sound; rather, they absorb the echoes. Things that can absorb sound are soft, light, and fluffy. So how does soundproofing work and what’s the difference between sound proofing and sound absorbing? The concepts behind the two are actually very simple. That being said, sound proofing and sound absorbing have clear differences between the two. Imagine that you’re building a room and you don’t want sound leaving so it doesn’t bother anyone else in the house. Replacing the drywall with foam isn’t going to stop any sound from entering or leaving since it’s mostly made of empty space. Using a thick or dense material, like concrete, on either side of the wall however will have the desired effect. The denser and heavier materials will take more energy to travel through, making it harder for sound to travel through. Well, if foam doesn’t make a difference in blocking sound, what is it used for? Foam absorbs echoes and lessens sound from impacts. If you throw a ball against a foam wall, it won’t bounce back as compared to a concrete wall. The energy is absorbed by the foam and the sound is minimal. If you did the same thing against a concrete wall, the sound given off would be much louder and would also be reflected throughout the room. Applying this concept to sound proofing a vehicle is relatively simple, although actual installation is more complex. The main sound proofing materials are damping mats, sound deadening sprays, foams, or insulation. Damping mats function simple enough: large dense sheets are placed in the floor and in firewall of the vehicle, greatly reducing road and engine noise. Sound deadening sprays are used in the same way as damping mats, but are for areas where matting would be too bulky or heavy to use, such as door panels or small gaps. Foam has a more specialized role, absorbing vibrations, so placing them around speakers is a good use for it. Insulation is another method, while not as effective at absorbing sound, it does give the added benefit of added thermal insulation to your vehicle. Recently, car manufacturers have also invested in creating acoustic glass. Honda, for example, is using acoustic glass in all of its newer models, giving exceptional sound proofing. Vehicles today are much quieter than those of before. Things like road and engine noise are becoming a thing of the past, thanks to newer sound proofing technologies and innovations. skdI qW ies dI vrqoN ikauN kIqI jWdI hY? 2015 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Diesel

F

or 2015, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class line-up sees a new E400 style with a turbocharged V6 engine. Other changes are less notable, consisting of minor equipment shuffling. Really, whether you want your midsize luxury car to be a fuel-sipping diesel sedan, a turbo V6-powered convertible or a road-burning 577-hp wagon, there’s bound to be an E-Class much to your liking. Since its debut for 2010, this generation of the Benz E-Class has been one of our favorites, thanks to its trifecta of refinement, performance and cutting-edge technology. The new E400 sports a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 with 329 hp that should provide performance not far off from that V8’s, along with superior fuel economy. Of course, there are plenty of great cars in the midsize luxury segment, though none of them can match the sheer variety of body styles and engines in the E-Class lineup. $59,500

T

he 2015 Audi S3 is an all-new model. If you’re looking for performance and luxury at a relatively affordable price, Audi might just have the car for you with its all-new 2015 S3. As the S4 is to the A4, the S3 is the higher-performance version of Audi’s equally new A3. Louder starts under the hood, where you’ll find a heavily modified version of the A3’s turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. Here, it generates a stout 292 horsepower, an increase of 72 hp over the A3. While the S3 offers a more thrilling driving experience, it does suffer from some of the A3’s same pitfalls. The optional 19-inch wheels make things particularly rough, but if you’re interested in the sportiest driving experience, this may be a sacrifice you’re willing to make. Realistically, though, just about everything you compare the S3 to is going to be cramped and rather stiff-riding. $44,000

2015 Triumph Street Triple ABS

T

his motorcycle truly epitomises the spirit of Triumph. Agile, fun, punchy, brimming with character, up for anything and great to look at. Its 675cc three-cylinder engine bubbles, growls and wails as you wind it up through the gears and, thanks to an all-new chassis, the handling is now even sharper and more intuitive than it’s ever been. And that’s saying something. The bodywork is new too. Colours appear as sharp slashes down the length of the bike from the slender tail section to the lean-looking tank, narrow radiator side cover and the front mudguard. Neatly finished by the striking new wheel design. You’ll find yourself using the Street Triple for anything from track days to traffic busting. Here’s a machine that can turn the dullest regular commute into a pleasurable trip. This superbike can be yours in $9,999.00 26

2015 Harley Davidson Superlow

T

he value and quality of the confidence-inspiring SuperLow model is unparalleled in its class. With a true Harley rumble, steel parts, premium paint and flawless chrome, this model reveals its authentic American motorcycle roots in every inch of detail. Born from the legendary Ironhead engines, the Evolution engine broke new ground in displacement innovation while maintaining the hunger for power, durability and proven reliability that Harley was built on. The 4.5-gallon teardrop fuel tank offers spacious fuel capacity for a low-profile tank. It’s tough, iconic and it leaves a good amount of room to show off more V-Twin. Experience smooth handling at slow speed and easy acceleration off the line with the final drive ratio found on this motorcycle. Fuel injection, coupled with trouble-free handling, help create a confidence-inspiring ride that’s perfect for anyone on a two wheel journey. $ 10,189

XLT Cargo Van

Thinking inside the box

R

emember the days when the average tradesmen would utilize the family van for work purposes. Many would simply just take out the rear seats, do a home conversion, and turn a regular minivan into a cargo van. Well, no need to do that these days – with more and more manufacturers offering a variety of cargo van options, there is a van to fit your needs. I had the opportunity to test the newly redesigned 2014 Ford Transit Connect (TC) XLT and if you’re a tradesman, small company owner, or delivery driver, this urban dweller may be just the vehicle for you. From a visual perspective, the TC is purely utilitarian and purpose-built. It looks deceivingly small on the outside, as it’s built 28

January 2015

on the same global C platform as the Focus, has a LOT of cargo room, and according C-Max, and Escape. The front end shares a to Ford, it also has best in-class maximum striking similarity to the Focus, payload capacity of 1,720 lbs. so much in fact that you’d have Since my test XLT was a cargo to look twice if they were parked van setup, it only had the two front seats (there is a threenext to each other. My test vehicle came equipped with the XLT seat option), and no divider package, which adds body-colour between the front and cargo bumpers, heated power mirrors, area. With a normal car-like fog lights, and two sliding doors. seating position and SUV-like Overall, the refreshed 2014 modroof line, there is honestly a el is a pretty good looking van, lot of usable space. No, there isn’t enough space to move all having a nice mix of European the furniture in your house, but and North American styling and flair. you have to remember, this TC Jag Dhatt The interior of the TC is what isn’t a full-sized hauler. The jag@jgkmedia.ca really surprised me because it cargo area also has a multitude

2014 Ford Transit Connect XLT

of tie-down locations to ensure your cargo doesn’t bounce around during the drive or delivery. Seating position is almost perfect and all controls are placed within reach. The seats are actually quite comfortable and provide excellent support, a good thing if you’re spending a lot of time behind the wheel. Forward visibility is spectacular, thanks to the huge windshield, large side windows, and a low cowl. But rear visibility is poor to blinding, depending on how many windows you have behind the B-pillar. On my test TC, I had none, and thus, even backing out of a parking spot was a challenge for this small cargo van. Yes, it was equipped with a back-up camera, but it didn’t help much when I was looking on the sides. Take it

from me, make sure your Transit has more windows than did mine. On the road, you really can’t fault the Transit Connect. The standard 2.5 liter fourcylinder engine puts out a respectable 169 horsepower and 171 lb-ft of torque. There is an optional 1.6 liter Ecoboost available, but the difference in real-life fuel economy is negligible. I had the opportunity to take this van to Seattle during a storm and I have to say, it was pretty stable on the I-5, even when there were heavy gusts of wind. The 6-speed automatic gearbox, with manual shifting mode, was perfect for this vehicle. Whether in the city or the highway, I did notice more road noise, and some clinks and rattles than I would like, with most coming from the cargo area. With a divider in place,

this should improve noise levels. Bluetooth clarity was also not as good as in other Ford’s I’ve tested, with many people complaining of noise when on the phone with me. But other than these qualms with the Transit, everything else was positive. And of course, as with most Fords, you can add as many options as you need to make this van suit your personal needs and tastes. The 2014 Ford Transit Connect is a great urban hauler and perfect for a variety of trades. Probably the best thing about this Ford is the sticker price, which starts at just $26, 599 for the XLT model. With such an attractive sticker price for a well-built van, it’s no wonder many fleets have switched over to the Ford Transit Connect. January 2015

5 Pilates Post-Holiday Workouts to Get You Back In Shape 5 iplytIz post- Awpxy Awp nUM TIk r`Kx leI Cu`tIAW ‘c vrizs

hristmas is perhaps one of the most, if not the most, indulgent holidays of the year. All those festive holiday cookies, indulgent appetizers, and scrumptious mains may have looked tempting during the season, however, it’s just a matter of time before you’ll notice that your jeans don’t fit you the same as they used to. While you may have very well convinced yourself that you may be able to cut corners and control your cravings, it’s always best to be fully prepared for what’s to come ahead.

With the wide array of fitness trends and workouts all over the media, it becomes difficult to choose one particular one that’s best suited for your specific fitness goals. Toning yourself for the perfect post-Christmas body means burning off that excess holiday weight, sculpting and toning your muscles, strengthening your core, and improving your balance, flexibility, and posture. Pilates is a workout that targets all those core fitness areas, and makes you feel amazing about yourself! Aside from the aforementioned fitness benefits, pilates also has numerous psychological benefits such as increased awareness of your physiology, increased self-esteem, increased endorphin production, as well as increased alertness and concentration. The workout: It’s no wonder the workout has gained immense popularity amongst celebrities such as Miley Cyrus, Reese Witherspoon, Cameron Diaz, Amanda Seyfried, and many more. Here are five post-holiday pilates workouts that will get you into the most fantastic shape to kick off the new year: 1. Curl your head up off your mat, shoulders up slightly, reach your arms along your side and start pumping, lower back

still pressed onto the ground. Do a total of 100 reps with one break mid-way. This exercise aids in tightening and strengthening your core whilst integrating your whole body into the workout. 2. Start with a sit-up with your legs straight ahead of you. Reach your arms over your legs and lower your head between your arms. Curl backwards, with your knees still bent, and stop mid-way. Extend your arms upwards and pull your abs inwards. Take a deep breath and lower your arms while you curl back up. Repeat with a total of 8 reps, at a steady pace. 3. Bicycle hundreds – Laying down on you mat, position your legs in a 45 degree angle, with your arms on your sides and shoulders and neck relaxed. Using your dumbbells, extend your arms up and down with one knee pulled inwards for approximately ten seconds each, then switch. Your legs should bend and straighten in the same manner a bicycle does. Do a total of a hundred reps. 4. The Cardio Pilate Lunge -- Stand up on your mat with some light dumbbells for this next exercise. Place your left foot forward and right foot back, keep your arms down and dig deep into a static lunge. Do ten reps on each side. 5. The Sumo Squat – Dumbbells in hand, place your heels a little bit wider than your shoulders and drop into a sumo squat. Drop your hips down as much as you comfortably can (in the same way a sumo wrestler does). Do two sets of ten reps with a break in between. This is a great exercise for working the calves, hamstrings, knees and thighs. These exercises will not only strengthen and condition your core, but your entire body making you leaner, toner, and slimmer in just a few sessions. So don’t worry about overindulging too much over the holidays, and incorporate pilates into your new fitness regiment.

Crossover Popularity Likely to Continue in 2015 SUVs and crossovers have never been in higher demand and the trend looks like it’s here to stay. But what is it about cars with a utilitarian vibe that is proving so popular? Automotive trends don’t start or stop overnight. It takes billions in investment and five years of development work to bring a new car from the sketchpad to the forecourt. Rather they start slowly then keep building momentum year after year. A perfect example is the SUV “crossover,” where demand for cars with a utilitarian look but a refined feel seems to be showing no signs of abating. One in five new cars on the road is of the SUV variety and everywhere you turn a manufacturer is offering either a new serious offroader from the likes of Land Rover or a fun crossover such as the Fiat 500X. The Chinese and American markets are currently driving global car sales -- two regions where the SUV look has long been coveted -- and therefore trends. But in Europe too utility vehicles grew from 8 per cent of the market to 19 per cent between 2008 and 2013. And driving much of that demand in Europe is the Nissan Qashqai, which in November set a new sales record for a vehicle built

34

January 2015

in the U.K. -- taking just six years to achieve 2 million vehicles sold. But when there is so much choice on the market, from people carriers, to coupés and luxury sedans, why are consumers gravitating towards vehicles like the Qashqai and its growing list of competitors? Nissan’s Ian Tonkin says that, simply put, they offer owners the best of both worlds: “Modern crossovers and SUVs provide owners with enhanced space and practicality when compared to a C- or D-segment car. In addition, a high-riding driving position gives drivers a good view of the road ahead. Crossovers in particular also deliver, in some cases, greater efficiency than D-segment rivals, which is attractive to buyers.” In the U.S., where the love affair with the traditional SUV is so entrenched that the relationship only gets put on hold when emissions laws change, tax legislation is altered or there is uncertainty about gas prices, the popularity of the Crossover segment has been nothing short of remarkable. If IHS’s figures are broken down so that

“true SUVs” and crossovers are separated, then in the U.S., crossovers are currently outselling SUVs and minivans combined and are second only to “cars.” But more traditional SUV sales are booming too and partly due to the fact that companies are making their latest models more comfortable, less agricultural and more fuel-efficient. Jim Farley, Ford executive vice president, Global Marketing, Sales and Service says that SUVs now account for 23 per cent of Ford’s global sales. He forecasts that by the end of the decade that figure will have risen to 29 per cent. He also believes that the car that first ignited the American public’s passion for 4x4s is the Ford Explorer, which he describes as “The SUV America fell in love with -- a vehicle built for the perfect family adventure.”

or people from India, particularly northern India, probably no other car has had as big an impact as the Hindustan Ambassador, or Amby for short. The Ambassador is to India what the cheesesteak is to Philadelphia, the pyramids to Egypt, or the Eiffel Tower is to Paris. Even though it’s difficult to drive, thirsty on fuel, and has poor performance, it was India’s car of choice for decades. Since I was in India for a vacation in December, the Amby is the perfect pick for our Classic Car. The Ambassador was first built in 1957 and was based on the Morris Oxford. For many years, it was the only car available in India, and even then, was difficult to get. As production grew, the Amby became a household name. Politicians, in particular, bought the car and it wasn’t until the early 2000’s that people began to buy other brands and SUV’s. Even though the 1979 model was the fourth generation of the Ambassador, there were only minor changes as compared to the first generation. The facelift included a flatter design, smaller front grill, square park lamps, and separate amber indicator lamps. The biggest advancement was the availability of a 1,498 cc diesel engine that produced 37 hp. You could also purchase the “Deluxe” model, which included some upgrades. The exterior of the 1979 Ambassador was probably its best characteristic – it looks good even today. The interior of the car was, on the other hand, a different story. As compared to Japanese, European or even North American brands, the Ambassador’s interior was cramped, made with flimsy materials, and didn’t have the best fit and finish. That being said, the seats of the Amby, especially the rear bench where important people sat, were very comfortable for short or long rides. Obviously, politicians need to ride in comfort, right. The ‘79 Amby wasn’t a power house, but it wasn’t meant to be driven fast or on a track, but rather in style. Compared to the gasoline model, the diesel motor spewed out a little more torque, at 78 lb-ft. After 56 years, the Hindustan Motors decided it was time to retire the Ambassador and thus, 2014 will be the last year of the model. With declining sales numbers, it’s the right business move; with more and more people buying Japanese, Korean, and German brands, the Ambassador has had a good life. Yes, it will be missed. Since it’s a great retro looking car, maybe owners should gut the interior and throw in a small block and make one hell of a muscle car.

t’s hard to believe but GMC has never held a vehicle launch for the Yukon full-sized SUV in the Yukon Territory. That changed with the introduction of this all-new 2015 GMC Yukon model. Media from across Canada landed in Whitehorse and travelled around the Yukon, ending up in the famous gold rush time capsule of Dawson City. From the wooden sidewalks to the gravel covered streets, this preserved part of history looks and feels much the way it would when gold was first discovered in 1896. The Yukon is also a great test for this big truck because of the immense stretches of unpopulated roads with smooth sections, potholes, and loose gravel. The Yukon has it all, including spectacular vistas, wide-open space, and spectacular scenery. Spending three days behind the wheel made me realize what a good job GMC has done with this truck, from fuel economy to creature comforts. 36

January 2015

Looks Last year GM introduced the Chevrolet Silverado, a GMC Sierra full-size pickup truck. In fact the Silverado won the North American Truck of the Year and the GMC Sierra won the AJAC Truck of the Year. With a solid basis, the engineers then went about building the full-sized SUV’s based on the truck chassis. They include the Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe, the GMC Yukon and Denali, plus the Cadillac Escalade. These represent a huge profit centre for General Motors and they needed to get them right. The GMC Yukon is the most popular of the bunch with one-in-three full-sized SUV buyers choosing the Yukon, which is opposite to the United States, where the Chevrolet trucks dominate. The top Yukon Denali model traditionally represents about thirty-five percent of all Yukon sales, but in the first few months of sales, it has captured over sixty percent. One reason might be Zack Spencer the same level of features and luxury of the Cadillac zack@drivewaybc.ca Escalade but with a lot less “bling”.

2015 GMC Yukon Denali Inside The Yukon is sold as a short wheelbase and XL, long wheelbase. The long wheelbase model is an imposing truck but a favourite of large families that need the third row of seating, plus a functional cargo area. The more popular short wheelbase offers a lot of room as well but when the third row of seats is employed the cargo area is diminished. On all but the base model, the second and third row of seats can be folded and stored electronically, making the Yukon easy to transform. The Denali is exceptionally well-equipped because of the attention to detail, like aluminum trim around the radio and heat controls, and leather seating with French stitching. What the GMC Yukon offers over the Cadillac cousin is a simpler dashboard layout with traditional rotary knobs and buttons, where the Cadillac has moved to touch sensitive panels that take time to master.

Verdict The Yukon Territory should be on your bucket list of areas to visit in Canada. The scenery is stunning and the vastness is something to experience. Huge tracks of pure undisturbed wilderness, plus the gold rush is still on around Dawson City. Having a chance to visit an active gold mine was intriguing and educational, with todays gold miners still using the same methods the pioneers did over 100 years ago; they just do it on a bigger, more mechanized scale. The other Yukon, GMC fill-size truck, is so good I found no fault with it. The only roadblock to ownership is the price. Starting at $51,800 for the SLE or $60,960 for the SLT and $75,540 for the Denali, this isn’t a cheap prospect. Buyers who need a big truck for family duty or towing have a corresponding big-ticket price tag. The Denali offers most of the same features as the more expensive Cadillac Escalade, but is more use-friendly and less expensive. If you can spring for the Denali price, it will not disappoint. In fact, the Yukon is a winner on all trim levels.

Drive The Yukon is offered with two engine choices, the 5.3L 355hp V8, in the base SLE and middle SLT Yukon models, and the 6.2L V8 in the Denali. This 6.2L engine is also used in the Escalade. There are several reasons to consider the Denali over the base 5.3L engine. The first is the inclusion of the magnetic ride control system that is also available in the Escalade. This system adapts the suspension up to 100 times per second and did a great job on the various road surfaces in the Yukon. The second is the noise cancelling system that pumps cancelling sound waves through the Denali’s stereo system to help eliminate unwanted road and engine noise. The third reason is the mighty 6.2L engine with 420hp and 460 lb.ft. of torque. Because this engine and the 5.3L have direct injection, variable value timing and most importantly, cylinder management, the V8 can switch off half of the eight cylinders and lean off the fuel mixture to greatly reduce fuel consumption. With over 1000 km driven at a range of speeds, the real world consumption was 12L/100km, close to the 11.4L/100km official highway rating with the 6.2L engine. All the current Yukon models are equipped with a 6-speed automatic, but the 6.2L engines will get an 8-speed this fall, with the 5.3L following next year. AWD is standard on all but the base model and these trucks can tow up to 3856kg.

Just Ask Leah lIAw nUM p`uCo

Leah Gillanders Automotive Technician at Brian Jessel BMW

Q1. I’ve been reading about putting nitrogen in my car tires vs. regular air. Is there any advantage to including nitrogen in tires than air? A1: There are some advantages to nitrogen. First, the nitrogen particle is smaller and does not expand or contract in the same manner as air. This is ideal for your tire pressure so it remains very close to the OEM specification in different weather temperatures and driving conditions. The second advantage is that air contains moisture and thus can ruin rims and wheels; nitrogen doesn’t allow this to happen because it’s completely dry. Q2. If we don’t drive our car much, should we still follow the manufacturer’s suggested service intervals? It seems if I don’t drive my car much, it’s just wasting money. A2: Yes, for the most part you should still follow the manufacturer’s specified service intervals even if you have not reached the specified kilometers. Brake fluid, for example, is hydroscopic meaning it has the ability to absorb water. So, regardless of how much you drive your vehicle, it will need to get replaced accordingly. In the crankcase of your car’s engine where engine oil sits, condensation will form, turning the engine oil milky over time, creating excessive wear on internal engine parts. Maintaining your car’s fluids at regular intervals is one of the simplest things you can do to keep your engine and driveline running at its best. Q3. I was thinking of becoming a certified mechanic. Are there good job prospects in the Vancouver area? Also, what is the difference between a certified mechanic and a heavy duty mechanic? A3: There are definitely good job prospects for mechanics in the Lower Mainland and just about anywhere life will lead you. Good tradespeople are always in high demand. A certified mechanic just means you have you “red Seal” in Canada for working on light duty automobiles. There is also Certified Heavy-Duty Mechanics courses, meaning you are trained on heavy-duty vehicles, trucks, or equipment. Choose the right course to start an exciting career in automotive or heavy-duty mechanics. 40

New Technologies for 2015 swl 2015 leI nvyN qknIkI XMqr

few years ago, I was amazed at the idea of built-in Bluetooth in our car. I could now drive around and dial, answer, and reject phone calls with the push of a button; not only was this convenient, but safer. As we begin 2015, car companies are in constant competition to come up with the latest and greatest in automotive and motorcycle technologies and gadgets. As a techy, even I’m amazed with the advancements made by manufacturers. Here are my top picks of most unique gadgets and technology that will be, or already is, available for 2015.

Volvo “Run-off road” Protection: Volvo has come up with a system to help protect the occupants of the vehicle when it has detected that the vehicle has left the road. The system will automatically detect when the vehicle has left the road and electronically tighten the seatbelts. These sorts of crashes often result in spine injuries, so Volvo has opted to protect against them as well. The seats are designed to be energy-absorbing and the frame deforms mechanically to cushion against the vertical forces. This helps reduce the forces exerted on the spine by approximately one third. The new system will be available in the 2015 Volvo XC90. In-Car Wi-Fi: Yes, you’re reading this correctly. Although this technology is available in ultra-luxury vehicles, like Bentley, now even the 2015 Cadillac ATS will feature an OnStar 4G LTE connection that will allow you to run a Wi-Fi hotspot inside the vehicle, giving all the occupants access. The hotspot will allow up to 7 devices to be connected at any given time and data plans start at $10 a month, which is quite reasonable. The In-Car hotspot is also available in other OnStar enabled vehicles.

DRK Lifestyles Pedestrian Airbags: When there is a pedestrian accident, almost always there are extensive injuries to the pedestrian. Just a few months ago, our Editor’s father was involved in such an accident and sustained major injuries. Land Rover has equipped its new Discovery model with airbags on the outside of the vehicle. The airbags are designed to protect pedestrians from serious injuries if they are struck by the front end of the vehicle. The air bags are deployed from the front hood and are also deployed in a manner that does not obstruct the drivers view. Way to go Land Rover! Predictive Forward Collision Warning System: How many times is our vision obstructed by the vehicle in front of us? Well, Infiniti’s Predictive Forward Collision Warning system warns drivers of risks beyond the driver’s field of view. The system can detect the relative velocity and distance of a vehicle directly ahead of it, but it can also do the same for a vehicle travelling in front of the preceding one. If that vehicle suddenly brakes, the system will warn the driver with visual and audible cues allowing the driver to take appropriate action. Night Vision with Pedestrian Detection: BMW’s Night Vision with Pedestrian Detection warns drivers of dangers beyond the visibility of the headlights. The system can detect animals and pedestrians in the dark by using infrared technology to see things before they’re visible to the driver. The infrared camera scans a range up to 300+ metres ahead of the vehicle which is 200 metres beyond what the Xenon headlights can illuminate. The vehicle then displays, in real-time, the video on the onboard LCD screen.

The milestone was reached yesterday when a 2015 Nissan Pathfinder Platinum was sold to Mr. Rikki Solitario at Willowdale Nissan in Thornhill, Ontario. “This is a wonderful achievement to share with our employees and dealer network during the holiday season and is the direct result of hard work, partnership with our dealers and planning to bring the right cars to Canadians,” says Christian Meunier, president of Nissan Canada Inc. “This was a particularly exciting year for the Canadian team with the launch of the Nissan Rogue and Micra, both very successful in Canada. For Micra, it was the first time in many years we brought a new vehicle to Canada which wasn’t offered in the United States. It was an important addition to our line-up, growing our share of the entrylevel segment it competes in with Versa Note, but appeals to different customers.” Since Micra arrived in dealerships in April 2014 with the lowest starting MSRP in Canada of $9,998, sales have exceeded 7,000 units, while sales of Versa Note have continued to increase with over 12,000

units sold CYTD. Together, Nissan’s share of the entry-level segment is 22 per cent at the end of November. The excitement around Micra will continue next year with the launch of the 2015 Nissan Micra Cup – Canada’s most affordable racing series featuring Canada’s most affordable car. The Nissan Rogue continues to be a hot seller in the compact crossover segment and is the top seller in the line-up with 26,729 units sold up to the end of November, up 78 per cent year-over-year. Rogue hits the mark with great design, high utility, an ample interior and the right level of equipment while being easyto-manoeuver in the city, fuel efficient and affordable. Added to that is the availability of the Nissan intuitive all-wheel drive system, and it is clear why the car is so popular. Nissan continues to dominate the all-electric segment with the Nissan LEAF which has surpassed sales of 1,020 units for 2014, an increase of over 130 per cent for the same period last year. “This exciting milestone is just the beginning and we expect to continue this sales momentum into the New Year with the new Murano in dealerships now, as well as the much anticipated redesign of the all-new Nissan Titan full-size pick-up truck,” added Meunier. “The Nissan Maxima sport sedan has a long legacy here in Canada and we are excited to prepare the launch of an all-new model, so stay tuned!”
