EDITOR’S NOTE | sMpwdkI
IT’S TIME TO SPRING INTO ACTION s I write this editorial, it’s hard to believe that it’s already March 2022. It seems like just yesterday that we were celebrating the New Year. Most of Canada was watching Covid numbers increase, fearful of what this could mean; however, within a short time, these numbers began to drop, and we are now on the verge of most restrictions being lifted across the nation. Speaking of restrictions, the Truckers’ Convoy made headlines not only in Canada, but across North America. While the initial plan of the Truckers’ Convoy was to tackle the vaccine mandate, it turned into the Freedom Convoy, which seemed to have a political agenda, much different than the original focus on truckers’ needs
A
and concerns. Read Ray Gompf’s emotional column about the convoy issue. Mike Howe talks about one of the most important aspects of trucking – driver retention. He examines how there’s more to the issue of driver shortage. By ensuring a good work environment, professional attitude and respect for employee needs and concerns, drivers would stay with the profession. As we look ahead to the coming months, it is time to Spring into Action. Most restrictions will probably be lifted and thus, society will return to a more “normal” life. Make plans to grow yourself and your business, set realistic goals and then work hard to achieve them. Let’s make 2022 a year to remember.

The Truckers' Convoy G. RAY GOMPF, CD
he first thing I need to say about “the convoy” is that it was not a truckers’ convoy. Yes, it had truckers in its midst and truckers no doubt offered a lot of logistical advice, but this was a people’s convoy. One thing that bothers me is, the government spinning, falsely identifying, and pro-offering misleading reasons for the unrest and truckers are being used for political purposes by both sides. Those being used are willingly participating, but all truckers working for decades at trying to have governments hear and understand trucker issues are being unwarrantedly tarred with the “convoy” brush and any semblance of respectability with governments has been lost whether or not there was support for the convoy. The CTA and the Provincial Trucking Associations were quick to disassociate themselves from the movement, but these bodies truly are not the “only” credible voice of the trucking industry. There are another 16,500 or so small business trucking companies that are left out of that representation. In fact, the CTA and Provincial Trucking Associations often work against those 16,500 and those 16,500 are not allowed to organize to become heard. It’s truly a situation of the tail wagging the dog. But the CTA et al play well, with a biased media paid well, to promote the government story at the expense of the rest. That being said, was this people’s convoy justified? Was the people’s convoy successful? I would offer a resounding yes to both. Justified in as much as the Federal Government had grossly overstepped administrative governing and were far too close to dictatorship. The Federal Government had stopped listening to the people and were telling people what they would do
T

under the premise of “it’s good for you”. It matters not the reason the government was forcing issues; it matters the word “force” was being invoked. And, it’s not like the protesters, like Canadians of all walks of life, weren’t already 90% vaccinated. It was about unnecessary steps being added to the border crossing experience. In the case of truckers, it was that extra unnecessary step that exacerbated an already onerous unpaid experience. For the most part, truckers are paid only when wheels turn. Not only that, but this unpaid time is also then deducted from the available time to make money miles. But the government refused to listen to reason, and this small extra step became the hill on which to die. Instead of listening to grievances — of which there are many — the government redoubled its effort to bully the people. If the government had instead chosen to truly listen and understand what was causing this unrest and met with organizers face to face, and honestly negotiated a satisfactory conclusion, the convoy would not have even left the west coast. The movement that developed which became the Freedom Convoy on route, wouldn’t have become a national event with worldwide coverage. It was a result of the Federal Government’s failure to properly react to a few disgruntled people who had a point that became a movement of many millions. I dare say a majority of people saw that opportunity to let a government out of control with power and our money know there was massive discontent. So many times, during the fray, which as I write is still very much well underway, the government and their minions have said this protest is undemocratic. Well, quite the opposite. In 1215, the people, fed up with King John’s bullying stood up and forced the King to sign the
Magna Carta on which our constitution and rights and freedoms of today, in Canada, is based. It’s democratic when the people take back an out-of-control government that’s pushing tyranny. Democracy according to the government elites involves creating hate and discontent by dividing peoples by race, by sex, by sexual orientation, by religion, by ethnicity, by old stock/new stock, by occupation, by eye colour, by any measure possible to create division and then convince people they’re not inclusive. And when anyone challenges what the elite tells us we are, then they call us evil names and make us too unworthy to exist. It’s a playbook as old as man himself. Yet, the masses that believe the government operates in the best interest of the people are being lead like the bull with the ring in his nose. The freedom convoy removed the ring in the bull’s nose and the government just had to put it back before the bull realized the ring was gone. The government elite will not relinquish power any more easily than did King John, but we simply need the Freedom Convoy to force the elite to sign our Magna Carta and take back our country. Now for those of you who heard and believed this convoy was an insurrection, that Ottawa was under siege those were the words used by government, not Ottawans. Yes, 12 blocks around the government precinct were pretty much being taken up by the protester’s vehicles but factually there was a lane open for emergency vehicles. Yes, the protesters were loud, and horns blared incessantly. Yes, protesters did dress Terry Fox’s monument with a hat, a flag and a sign but it was not defaced; in fact, it was cleaned and polished by protesters. No, the protesters did not desecrate the national war memorial or dance on the tomb of the unknown soldier but when it NATIONAL MAGAZINE

raised, the now confiscated, $10 million raised to support the convoy, when all it would have taken is for someone at the seat of power to simply listen. We can’t forget the City of Ottawa intends on suing organizers for $9.6 million dollars. Isn’t it funny that figure represents the exact amount confiscated from GoFundMe?
It really makes one wonder who the bad people are, when our federal government has been proven in legal proceedings to be on the verge of corruption, but that itself is another issue. As Voltaire said: It is dangerous to be right in matters on which the established authorities are wrong.
Convoy
happened by agitators designed to make the protesters look bad, the protesters did set up a security detail to protect those sacred sites and maintained the security. The Rideau Centre, an enormous mall was reportedly threatened and not by protesters, and management closed the mall for, as I write, now 15 days. The Shepherds of Good Hope, a soup kitchen for the homeless was raided by goons but blamed on the protesters. Protesters ensured the food was more than replaced and organized a fund raiser collecting more than $750,000 to help Shepherds of Good Hope with their work. That doesn’t sound like a “fringe minority” as the Prime Minister called them. What other protest have we seen, in the past century or so, where the protesters did a major cleanup sweep of the area, and beyond, assigned by police to them? This is a first for me in the 75 years to which I can speak. Now will the government(s) end this protest with violence and an overabundance of muscle might? There is no question in the minds of both participating protesters and those who

The electric semi-truck pulled the trailer from a Penske Truck Leasing (PTL) location in Ontario, Calif. to the inaugural race at the L.A. Coliseum as part of Freightliner’s primary sponsorship of the No. 2 Freightliner eCascadia Ford driven by NASCAR Cup Series Rookie of the Year contender Austin Cindric. “Team Penske has been evolving with Freightliner since 1984,” said Team Penske Transportation Director Chris Yoder, who piloted the eCascadia during the historic drive. “I think it’s safe to say we’ve operated every model road tractor Freightliner has produced since 1984. Yesterday’s trip with the eCascadia will mark the pinnacle of our partnership. Together we’ve innovated and developed

on the ground floor and this trip is symbolic of the next journey we plan to take together, a carbon neutral future with a focus on sustainability.” “At Freightliner, we’re driven to deliver purposeful innovation for our customers and there’s a tremendous sense of pride to see the innovative all-electric Freightliner eCascadia used by our longstanding partners at Team Penske to make racing history,” said Mary Aufdemberg, general manager, product strategy and market development, DTNA. The eCascadia used by Team Penske is part of the Freightliner Electric Innovation Fleet, which includes 20 battery electric trucks in operation by PTL and its customers. “We’re committed to leading our industry in the transition to commercial electric vehicles and providing increasingly more sustainable truck options to our customers,” said Art Vallely, President of Penske Truck Leasing. “We continue to test new and innovative vehicles in our fleet, and we have been impressed with
the performance of these Freightliner vehicles.” To date, PTL has accumulated over 480,000 miles of use on the trucks, providing DTNA valuable feedback for the final series production coming in late 2022. The two companies share a passion for long term sustainability and carbon neutrality, making the development process even more meaningful with Team Penske ready to author the next chapter in an incredibly successful partnership on the racetrack. A leader in global transportation systems, PTL constructed charging infrastructure across six locations in California. Technology partners also involved in this project included Team Penske sponsors such as Shell, Hitachi, and Siemens. Currently, PTL operates 10 Freightliner eCascadia day cab tractors and 10 Freightliner eM2 fully electric box trucks running regular routes to customers around Southern California with a focus forward on sustainability. A Group Order
PASH BRAR
Gone Bad wanted to share a real life story that is actually happening as I’m writing this article. I was sharing this story with a few drivers that I’ve known for over ten years and they agreed it was worth sharing with others. I live in BC and one part of my job is to help sell flat deck trailers which are manufactured in the US and import them to Canada. Trailers are very hard to come by these days anywhere in North America. The wait times are long and prices are soaring. My tale begins in May of 2021. I was notified there would be price increases coming soon and a client in Alberta whom I had dealt with before happened to call me the same day. He was enquiring about ordering more trailers and I explained he better act now because prices were about to go up.
I
16
MARCH - APRIL 2022
He decided to put together a group order and act on their behalf. I’ve done many group orders over the years, and this was nothing new. He advised of the specifications needed and decided to order 5 trailers. 3 for others and 2 for himself. I was given the names of each person. Two gave their own credit cards for a security deposit and 3 orders were put on the credit card of the representative of the group. The three other people happened to have the same first name and two even had identical last names. In October, one of the two men with the identical first and last name called and said he no longer wanted the trailer. Call him #1. He had given his own deposit, so his credit card was credited immediately, and a confirmation was emailed. Now there were 4 trailers on order.
The other person with the identical name had not given his credit card. His was charged on the representative’s credit card as we were instructed his own credit card was full and he would pay back the representative. Call him #3. The representative had authorized this from the start. The person called multiple times to enquire when his trailer would be ready over the months. When the first two trailers were ready, the representative told me he would take one and #2 would take the other. The paperwork was done for both. Then we got a call from the representative saying #2 would take his trailer later when the other on order 2 arrived. He was instead giving another person the second trailer. This new person’s information was given by the representative but we did not speak to him. Both trailers were being picked up together and we had them sitting washed and ready, decked up on top of each other. The new person, lets call him outsider, arrived to pick up and then the story took a turn. He informed the person delivering the trailers that he had to pay the representative a $10,000 premium to get the trailer. He needed it desperately so he said he paid it because nothing else was available. He then refused to take the representatives trailer and said he will not do him any favors. He said tell the representative that the trailer was “over height.” I was sent an email from the dealership that the one trailer was picked up and the other trailer was left behind because it was “over height.” I have decked 3 trailers and knew that being over height was impossible and responded “How is this possible? Two trailers cannot be over height.” Then I got NATIONAL MAGAZINE

entire day was wasted as people yelled at each other threatening lawsuits and the representative that caused all this literally did nothing. He didn’t want to talk to any of the people. The dealership and I had to piece this situation together using a timeline and this was what happened; #1 was out in October so no change. #2 had literally cancelled the week before and then suddenly wanted the trailer again, so he was told he is out. #3 didn’t do his own deposit and the representative now refused to give him a trailer so he was out. The outsider got 2 trailers and had to pay $20,000 total extra to the representative in cash on top of the sale price of the trailers and the representative took 2 trailers for himself. So, #2 ordered another trailer that won’t arrive for another 9-10 months, and the representative finally spoke to him and promised him he would give him $10,000 that he took from the outsider. #3 is still contemplating if he will order. He took it well and explained his credit card had a limit that cannot cover the deposit, so I provided wire information so he can do his own deposit if he does choose to order. I have NEVER seen this type of
Trailers
behavior with any group order before in 12 years. The representative is now banned from ever ordering trailers again, and now going forward , anyone ordering multiple trailers must each do their own deposit and speak to myself and the dealership to confirm. No name changing on orders is allowed when trailers arrive and if it is requested, you will be denied and deposits will not be surrendered if you do not pick up. The moral of this story is, don’t trust anyone to represent you in a group order. Trailers from the time of the order in May 2021 to now, have gone up $15-20,000 USD in price, so now the men who lost on this order, have lost a lot of money. The representative took advantage of this price change and hurt others in the process. So, the lesson you can learn from this nightmare, is order on your own. It can be part of a group order, but pay your own deposit and speak to a dealership or salesperson directly to confirm everything; This way no one can take your order away. Also don’t make rash decisions based on emotions. #2 ruined himself by cancelling and then wanting the trailer back a few days later. Once you request your deposit is refunded, you are out!
Order
a call and was told the outsider hates the representative and was charged a premium for the trailer and refusing to haul his trailer. Now the story gets better. The second set of two trailers arrived and # 2 guy suddenly didn’t want his trailer. The representative told me this. I called #2 myself and he confirmed he didn’t want the trailer. He said he waited too long for his trailer and was angry. So I asked if he wanted his deposit back. He said he did. #2 deposit was refunded on his credit card immediately. Another few days passed and #2 suddenly says he does want the trailer after all, and he did his paperwork and was approved for financing. Then I got a strange call from the dealership. They said that apparently the outsider was taking another trailer, and #3 had also just called once again confirming his trailer had arrived. I called the representative and he said he was again charging the outsider $10,000 to take a second trailer. I said what about #2 and #3? The representative caused a huge uproar with #2 and # 3, as well as the outsider. Much yelling and screaming occurred. It was 3 people fighting for 2 trailers. Literally an

Chili House Restaurant here used to be a Chili Pepper House in Surrey on the corner of 96th and 128th. It closed and changed names. My sister went in to the location in Langley near Willowbrook Mall and they said it was the same owners as the one that closed in Surrey. There is a long-time location of Chili Pepper House on Kingsway in Vancouver. The one is Langley is actually called Chili House Restaurant and Pepper is NOT in the name. Regardless of ownership or names, they serve Indian Chinese fusion food. A blend of both, which I am told originates from the area where the China and India border meet. I had food from the Langley Chili House Restaurant. At this time, I was unable to dine in and it was takeout only. My family was invited by my long-time realtor to his home to celebrate my niece becoming a first-time home buyer. The realtor ordered Uber eats and it was delivered to his home. As take out containers were opened my first question was “how spicy is it?” If you have ever had this fusion food, they can make it VERY spicy if you want.

Myself, if I smell spice, I literally break out in a sweat. The realtor and his wife assured me it was ordered mild, so I was happy. My sister the hot spice queen wasn’t happy and was given a variety of hot sauce and chili oils to feed her need to start a fire in her mouth. There was a variety of dishes and I sampled all of them; Chili beef, Beef with Black Bean Sauce, Manchurian Beef Chow Mein, Chicken Fried Rice and a vegetarian dish Dai Ching Tofu with Vegetables. The spice level was low but I still sweat a bit. I had to use my napkin to wipe the sweat from my face a few times. I was laughed at by everyone which is always the case because I can’t handle too much heat. But it was not overpowering heat. I really liked all the dishes. My favorites were the beef chow mein and the beef in the black bean sauce. I enjoyed the okra pieces in the tofu dish as well. The chicken fried rice didn’t look very appetizing and bland in color, but it tasted great. Having this food reminded me how much I miss having the Chili Pepper House in Surrey. It was certainly a treat
to get takeout from the Chili House in Langley. My sister lives very near the location so it’s a favorite for her. Her and her daughter would always stop by after work and get take-out. Now that my sister works from home due to Covid, she doesn’t stop anywhere for take-out much. Having this food reminded us all on what we have been missing out on. I’m really glad we didn’t dine out at some loud restaurant and instead stayed in and enjoyed a great meal together. Talking and laughing at home actually turned out to be more fun than going out to us. I would definitely recommend a family night in of fusion Chinese Indian food, and maybe a movie or something on Netflix after. We actually shared a triple layer coconut cake together that I baked that day. The funniest part of the evening was when my sister went to sit down and found a sock on the chair. You can’t find THAT in a restaurant! Or I hope not! LOL

Volvo Trucks Announces First Two Volvo Trucks Certified EV Dealers in Canada olvo Trucks North America has designated two dealerships in Québec, as the first two Volvo Trucks Certified Electric Vehicle (EV) Dealers in Canada. The sales and service teams at both Camions Volvo Montreal and Paré Centre du Camion have completed Volvo Trucks’ robust training program requirements to ensure they are prepared to support the commercial deployment of Class 8 battery-electric trucks in the region. “Expanding our Volvo Trucks Certified EV Dealer network into Canada is an important milestone in our efforts to deploy our zero-tailpipe emissions Volvo VNR Electric trucks across all corners of North America,” said Peter Voorhoeve, president, Volvo Trucks North America. “We commend our longtime dealer partners Camions Volvo Montreal and Paré Centre du Camion for taking on this important leadership role in Canada, helping Volvo Trucks develop the ecosystem needed to support electromobility efforts at scale in the Quebec province.” The rigorous Volvo Trucks Certified EV Dealer program was designed to ensure that sales representatives are fully trained to consult with customers that are considering deploying Volvo VNR Electric to ensure they are selecting a model configuration that is technically viable based on their operating requirements. On the aftermarket side, the dealership certification ensures technicians have the proper technical training required to maintain electric drivetrains and components, as well as understand all safety procedures to follow when working with highvoltage systems. The certification also includes investments in the necessary vehicle diagnostics tools and requires the dealership to maintain a stock of key parts and components for the VNR Electric model to minimize service times and quickly get customers back on the road.

30 MARCH - APRIL 2022
Paré Centre du Camion was founded in 1987 and has two locations in Quebec — Québec City and Lévis. Its Quebec City facility is equipped to service the Volvo VNR Electric trucks, including procuring an electric truck charger. Paré Centre du Camion has already trained and certified three technicians to perform maintenance and repairs on customers’ Volvo VNR Electric trucks. “We are thrilled to be one of the first two dealerships in Canada to complete the Volvo Trucks Certified EV Dealer designation and look forward to helping our fleet customers in the region transition to Volvo VNR Electric trucks to improve supply chain sustainability,” said Marie-Claude Paré, dealer principal, Paré Centre du Camion. “We are big champions of Volvo Trucks’ mission to lead the global transition to electromobility, and plan to share valuable feedback from our customers on their experience operating Volvo VNR Electrics in the extreme cold of Canadian winters.” Camions Volvo Montreal was founded in 2014 and is part of a network of eight Volvo Trucks dealerships. Its flagship Dorval location, the first location to
receive the Volvo Trucks EV Certified dealership designation, now includes six truck bays that have been equipped to support battery-electric vehicle maintenance and repairs, including having access to a mobile EV charging unit. Six of Camions Volvo Montreal’s 30 technicians have completed Volvo Trucks’ required training program, with one specialist completing additional courses needed to become an internal training resource for other technicians. “We are having weekly conversations with our customers who are very interested in the Volvo VNR Electric technology, including discussing which routes might be ideal to start with when integrating battery-electric trucks into their fleet,” said Jean-Francois Bibeau, vice-president of sales, Camions Volvo Montreal. “We believe electromobility is the future of the global transport sector and look forward to partnering with Volvo Trucks to support electromobility projects as customer demand continues to grow.” To learn more about Volvo Trucks North America and the Volvo VNR Electric, visit the company website https://www. volvotrucks.us/trucks/vnr-electric.

Adjust Your Driving for the Conditions windshield washer reservoir full—you’ll need it if you encounter ice fog. • Be aware that roads are most slippery when it begins to rain as surface oil and grease form a slick film that won’t be washed away for 20 or 30 minutes of hard rain. In mist or a light rain, that greasy slick won’t be washed away at all. If the temperature is close to freezing, remember that bridge decks freeze before road surfaces. Check road reports before you go. • Read the road as you drive; watch for clues to what’s ahead, especially in unfamiliar territory or when visibility is poor. Even with reduced visibility in bad weather, you can use strategies to maximise the visibility you do have. Using lane markings and treelines can help you determine when the road begins to curve ahead or if it begins to drop down a hill. Use the fog line along the right edge of the road or roadside reflectors as a guide. Watch for slow-moving or stopped vehicles as an indication of trouble ahead.
gradually as soon as you realize the weather is changing. Avoid braking suddenly. You can only respond to things you can see. If you’re driving too fast, you won’t know what you can’t see until you’re right on top of it. You should be able to see a minimum of 20 seconds ahead and you should be able to stop in half the distance you can see. If you have to drop your speed significantly to do that, the weather may be too poor for driving. If you need to stop, find a safe place to pull off the road completely. Keep your trailer lights on to help others spot you as you wait it out. If you have to leave your vehicle, be sure you are dressed for visibility and to stay warm and dry. • In fog or rain, make sure you can see and be seen. Use your low beams or fog lights, not high beams. Low beams direct light onto the road, whereas high beams reflect light off the precipitation, impairing visibility. Inside your truck, avoid fogged windows by using the defroster and windshield wipers regularly. Keep your
udden changes in weather conditions will definitely impact your day. As a professional driver, you know you need to be alert and stay informed about conditions along your route. You expect the seasons to change, but it can take you by surprise when the weather seems to switch seasons without notice. To drive according to conditions, you need to be prepared as best as you can; check the weather reports along your route before you head out and again every few hours. Be prepared for inclement weather in all aspects, with the right mindset—able to adjust to the conditions as they change—and with the right gear in case you need to stop along the road. • When things start to look dicey, minimize distractions. Turn off music and don’t talk on your phone. Try opening your window to listen for traffic you may not be able to see. • In heavy rains or thick fog, slow down

Driver Retention A Needed Emphasis
he high turnover rate in the trucking industry continues to be a challenge – err, a problem – for carriers and the industry as a whole. The problem is compounded when one takes into account the estimated driver shortage for the industry as well, with a need for about 1.1 million NEW drivers over he next decade according to the American Trucking Association. Keeping pace with that need, will require a significant investment by the industry as a whole in recruiting truck drivers. Once recruited though, carriers need to do all they can to keep them. Just how bad is the driver turnover problem? In 2020, the American Trucking Association (ATA) estimated a 90% annualized rate for large fleets, and 69% for smaller fleets. Yes, you read that correctly – trucking companies are needing to replace nearly three quarters to 100% of their driver fleet on average each year. The expense behind recruiting and training truck drivers is very real. According to Freight Waves, the cost of recruiting and onboarding a driver ranges from $6000 to $12000 per driver, depending on the market. If a company is replacing 90% of its driver force, or even 70%, the cost quickly becomes quite large. With all this in mind, and an acceptance that driver retention is important, what are the answers? The first thought that comes to mind for most is pay. Drivers simply need better compensation. While this may be true, most carriers are competitive in compensation so pointing to that as a cause
T

of turnover isn’t likely accurate. In fact, the American Trucking Association’s Executive Vice President of Advocacy Bill Stevens shared the following during a roundtable at the FMCSA, “The median salary for a truckload driver working a national, irregular route was reported most recently at over $53,000, and wages have gone up substantially on average in the first half of 2021. Since 2014, private fleet drivers have seen their pay rise from $73,000 to more than $86,000, or a gain of nearly 18%. The bottom line is the trucking industry is hiring and paying great wages to drivers.” So, if it’s not pay, what can carriers do to retain drivers more effectively? There is no one silver bullet to addressing the problem, but there are several tactics any
carrier can take, so long as they do so in a sincere and meaning manner. These tactics come from a variety of sources, including carriers who are utilizing some of them successfully: • Performance Needs Acknowledged – incentivize safety and longevity milestones with compensation (safe miles driven, positive customer reviews, etc…). And, it’s ok to celebrate the little things publicly, even if not financially. Let drivers know they are truly appreciated. • Adopt and Install Electronic Logging Devices – these help to alleviate violations and improves drivers ratings. • Maintain Good Relationships With Drivers When They Leave – • Make Safety a Priority – this should be part of the culture and celebrated. Winters NATIONAL MAGAZINE
drivers improve their skills and celebrate the successes. • Embrace Driver Feedback – drivers are the life blood of the company, so why wouldn’t a carrier want to hear from them about what’s working and what’s not working. This isn’t the basic suggestion box, rather try advisory councils or feedback forums (these can be done virtually too). • Take the Time For Relationships – spend time during onboarding establishing relationships with new drivers. Then, maintain those relationships. • Overall Compensation Package – it’s not just about the wage, but the overall compensation package is important. This includes, regular pay increases, retirement plans, health/dental insurance, life insurance, disability insurance, and reasonable rates for family insurance plans is key. • Quality Equipment – drivers deserve to be behind the wheel of quality, clean, and safe equipment. Make certain drivers have the technological and mechanical tools they need for success. • Family First – one of the biggest challenges of the driving career is being
away from home. Carriers need to make certain drivers have a good work – life balance. Make sure drivers get home regularly, make sure drivers have the opportunity for meaningful relationships at home. The life of a truck driver can be stressful and challenging for a variety of reasons. As such, achieving 0% turnover is simply impossible, but there is no reason any
carrier needs to be at the 70-90% annual average turnover range. It simply costs too much for carriers not to try new approaches, even if those approaches may have an expense it is unlikely retention focuses expenses won’t pay for themselves over time if truly embraced. This is a great industry with great carriers and great drivers, it’s time for some adjustments to focus on retention.

Employers
Protecting Drivers Working Alone As a professional driver, you spend a lot of time working alone. Be sure you know what to do if you run into trouble.
ach day, thousands of drivers throughout British Columbia load, transport, and unload goods, tasks that are regularly completed alone. Whether working alone is because of early or late shifts or drive time without a crew, working alone means that you are in circumstances where it would be hard to get help in an emergency or if you are injured or become ill. Employers must protect their drivers during their work shift. Drivers must also protect themselves. A journey management plan for working alone explains steps drivers need to take while in the yard, on a customer’s site, and on the roadway. One of the first things a driver needs to do on arriving at the yard is determine whether there is anyone else at the office/ yard in case of an emergency. Check the parking lot for colleagues’ vehicles. If no one else is there, ask yourself what you would do if you got hurt. It’s important to know whom to contact if you were injured; it could be 911, an office staff member, a colleague, or the owner of the
E

company. Employers should be sure to provide that direction to all drivers. Before walking into the yard, check the area where you’ll be working and conduct a site-specific hazard assessment to identify hazards that could cause an injury. Look out for items on the ground that could cause a trip and fall, and slippery areas. If the area is dark, be sure to use some form of lighting —a flashlight or light tower. Always use use three points of contact when climbing up and down on the truck cab or trailer and take precautions against a fall from a height. Once you’re loaded up, confirm your destination and the route you’ll take. Travel on truck routes and make sure dispatch or your employer always knows where you are. Employers need to know the truck routes from their yard to customer locations and make sure drivers travel on these roadways. Pay close attention to road hazards around them while traveling on the roadway, and especially if you have to stop on the roadside. Pay attention to road conditions and drive at a safe speed. Watch out for
the distance between other vehicles, to make sure there is a safe stopping distance. At no point should a driver drive while distracted, such as holding a cell phone, iPad, etc. Trucking companies are well-advised to use a check-in system for drivers to make sure those working alone are safe. Ensure the success of the check-in system: • Assign a check-in contact for drivers. It could be someone at another company site, the owner, or a third-party company. • Ensure drivers know who the check-in contact is and how to contact them. • Trucking companies must ensure drivers are aware of the need for the precaution and comply every time. Employer and driver need to collaborate to make sure drivers are safe while working alone. If a driver feels at risk, they need to speak with the employer right away to ensure the hazard is removed or mitigated.
