The Yuba City Sikh Festival - Nagar Kirtan The Yuba City Sikh Festival is one of the largest and most spectacular Sikhism annual events in all of Northern California, drawing hundreds of thousands of devotees and spectators. The Yuba City Sikh Parade is held annually on the first weekend of each November, where for three days, Guru Gadee Diwas festivities celebrate the inaugural anniversary of Guru Granth Sahib, Sikhism’s holy scripture. The Festival, which include worship services and kirtan, climaxes with the Nagar Kirtan, an annual procession. In the procession, the holy Guru Granth Sahib scriptures are carried on a float from the gurudwara through the streets of Yuba City, while there is the singing of devotional hymns. Yuba City has been hosting the annual Guru Gadee Parade since 1979, in which decorated Singhs carrying a welcome banner lead the parade. In addition to local cities, Sikhs from across California, the USA, Canada and other countries come to Yuba City to observe and take part in these festivities. More than 100,000 people attend this festival, and each year the numbers continue to grow. The parade, held rain or shine, runs for several miles through the streets of Yuba City. The Sikh religion originated from South-Asia (in the Punjab state of modern-day India). It was introduced into North America in the early 19th century. Sikhs are an integral part of the USA, ranging from ordinary workers to wealthy business owners. In addition, they occupy very high profile administrative positions in the police, army and politics. Estimated 700,000 Sikhs living in the United States, with the largest accumulations on the Western and Eastern coasts. Along with other ethnicities, the Sikh population make the USA the great country that it is.

The 'Sikh Temple Gurdwara serving as a cultural center for some 20,000 Sikhs who reside in and around Yuba City. The Gurdwara, which was was erected in 1969, sits on a 30 acre site. Blessed by the grace of the Waheguru Ji, on the first Sunday of each November, an estimated 75,000 Sikh followers from all over the world converge at this site to join the crowds of local Sikhs and people of other religions in the annual Gurgiddi procession commemorating the receipt of the Sikh holy scriptures, the Guru Granth Sahib that was given the Guruship by the last of the living Sikh Masters, Guru Gobind Singh Ji in 1708. An invitation Bring your family and join us each November in the Nagar Kirtan celebrations. All faiths are welcome. Free food will be served all week-end. Guided tours of the Gurdwara are available. Educational materials, video, and audio tapes on Sikh faith and culture will be available for sale. Nagar Kirtan ‘Nagar’ means town and ‘Kirtan’ is a term that refers to the singing of hymns from the Guru Granth Sahib. The term, ‘Nagar Kirtan’ describes the most essential feature of the procession which is recitation of hymns from Guru Granth Sahib, as the Panj Piares (5 beloved ones) lead the procession through the town. • 99 percent of people wearing turbans in the U.S. are Sikhs from India • Sikhs have been in the U.S. for over 100 years • There are roughly 700,000 Sikhs in the U.S. today • Sikhism is the world’s fifth largest religion with 25 million adherents worldwide • Sikhs believe in one God, equality, freedom of religion, and community service • Sikhs cover their uncut hair with a turban • The Sikh turban represents a commitment to equality and justice • Sikhism is a distinct religion, separate from Hinduism and Islam

Sikhism - The word Sikh (pronounced “sickh”) means ‘disciple’ or ‘learner.’ The Sikh religion was founded in Northern India in the fifteenth century by Guru Nanak Dev Ji and is distinct from Islam and Hinduism. Sikhism is monotheistic and stresses the equality of all men and women. Sikhs believe in three basic principles; meditating on the name of God (praying), earning a living by honest means as well as sharing the fruits of one’s labor with others. Sikhism rejects caste and class systems and emphasizes service to humanity. Turbans are worn to cover our long hair and with respect to God. Learn to recognize a

Sikh turban. Sikhs have unshorn hair, beards and moustaches. The Sikh faith teaches us the humanitarian principles of freedom, equality, and justice the same principles this great democracy is founded on. There are about 25 million Sikhs in the world. Sikhs have been in the United States for over 100 years. Sikhism recognizes the universal truths that underlie all human endeavors, religions and belief systems. The universal nature of the Sikh way of life reaches out to people of all faiths and cultural backgrounds, encouraging us to see beyond our differences and to work together for world peace and harmony.

examples of Sikh Gurus and their followers making tremendous sacrifices for the cause of religious freedom and justice. More recently, Sikhs have been some of the most highly decorated soldiers of the British armed services during both World Wars. They played a significant role in the memorable battles of El Alamein in the Burma-China front and also in the allied assault in Italy. In India’s struggle for independence from the British, over two-thirds of all the Indians who were sentenced to life imprisonment or death were Sikh. This is in spite of the fact that Sikhs form less than two percent of India’s population. The Sikh Identity In 1699, the tenth and last living Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh, summoned his followers to the town of Anandpur in Punjab; over 80,000 came. According to history, Guru Gobind Singh appeared before his people, flashed a naked sword, and demanded a head. He repeated his call until five Sikhs volunteered. These five individuals came from different parts of India and from different castes. To these five, and subsequently to many others on that historic day, Guru Gobind Singh bestowed a new discipline, a creed

to his Sikhs. The Guru initiated these five in the new order of the Khalsa and then, in a dramatic and historic gesture, they in turn initiated him. On that day, he gave the Sikhs a unique identity which includes five articles of faith: • unshorn hair as a gift of God and Guru and a mark of Sikh identity • a small comb for the hair • a steel bracelet which signifies a reality with no beginning and no end, and is also symbolic of a Sikh’s commitment to the ideals of his faith, much as wedding ring might indicate fealty and identity • a sword indicative of resolve and commitment to justice, and • knee-length breeches in keeping with the disciplined life-style of a Sikh For the past 300 years, male Sikhs have been easily recognized by their long unshorn hair covered with a turban. Notably, in traditional Indian society only males of high caste or the elite, ruling class wore turbans. In requiring all Sikhs to don turbans, Guru Gobind Singh envisioned all individuals as noble. Sikh women adhere to the same life style, symbols, rules and conduct, but relatively few choose to wear turbans. Young Sikh boys, instead of

History and Beliefs The almost 25 million Sikhs worldwide constitute the fifth largest religion in the world. Despite almost a million Sikhs living in North America (USA and Canada), Sikhs are often confused as Arabs or Muslims. Sikhs arrived in North America in 1897 and played a pivotal role in the opening of the West and construction of the Panama Canal in 1904. In 1906, Sikhs established their first gurdwara, or place of worship, in the United States. 700,000 Americans and Canadians are Sikh and nearly every major city has a Sikh place of worship and community center. The Sikh faith is five hundred years old. Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism, taught a message of love. He spoke of a universal God, common to all mankind, not limited to any religion, nation, race, creed, color, or gender. The Sikh religion is strictly monotheistic, believing in one supreme Creator, free of gender, absolute, all-pervading, and eternal. Sikhism views life not as a fall from grace, but a unique opportunity to discover and develop the divinity in each of us. Human rights and justice form a cornerstone of Sikh belief, and Sikh history features countless

wearing a turban, often cover their uncut hair, which is tied in a top-knot, with a simple piece of fabric. Along with the aforementioned physical identifiers, Guru Gobind Singh went further in distinguishing Sikhs. In Indian society, an individual’s name reveals one’s caste and social status. Guru Gobind Singh freed Sikhs from the rigid caste system by ordering all Sikh males adopt the surname “Singh,” meaning a lion, and women use the surname “Kaur” meaning princess, thus shedding their caste identity. Each year, Sikhs worldwide commemorate and celebrate the historic events of

Vaisakhi 1699 as a milestone in Sikh history when Guru Gobind Singh decreed the formation of the Khalsa and fashioned the nation of Sikhs. The Sikh Scripture Guru Gobind Singh also decreed an end to the line of Gurus in human form. The writings of the earlier Gurus were collated along with those of Hindu and Muslim spiritual figures whose teachings strongly resonated with Sikh beliefs. This collection of writings is known as Guru Granth Sahib, a uniquely ecumenical and eclectic collection of spiritual writings. For Sikhs, Guru Granth Sahib is the repository of all

spiritual knowledge and authority. In temporal matters all authority rests with the Sikh community worldwide acting democratically and in mindful prayer with an awareness of the spiritual heritage which is embodied in the Guru Granth. Sikhs revere the ten Gurus, Guru Nanak to Guru Gobind Singh, because they delivered the divine word of the one, timeless God. The word “Guru” acquires, therefore, a very special meaning for Sikhs. It is reserved only for the ten Gurus who gave us the divine message and to this message contained in the Guru Granth Sahib.

EMBRACING THE KHALSA AID PHILOSOPHY

‘‘

“RECOGNIZING THE WHOLE HUMAN RACE AS ONE”

In 1998, Ravinder Singh Sidhu, Founder of Khalsa Aid, joined the Executive Committee at the Singh Sabba Gurudwara Slough in the United Kingdom.

14

At this time, most of the discussions in meetings revolved around the forthcoming tri-centenary of the Khalsa. Several ideas were proposed by different committee members, as to how this momentous event should be commemorated. Sidhu made a plea that this important occasion should be celebrated in a way that transcends the Sikh Community itself and recognizes the hardships faced by people beyond the Sikh Religion. Around the same time, the Kosovo region witnessed a massive refugee crisis and substantial ethnic tensions resulting in a war-like environment. Numerous hungry Kosovar refugees were regularly seen in news broadcasts, as they struggled to cross the cold mountainous borders in search of a better and safer life in Albania.

These people suffered daily, whether it was due to the harsh atrocities of the war, the scarcity of food available, or maneuvering their way across the harsh winter conditions. This refugee crisis ensued for a long period of time, and the horrific nature of these refugees’ lives during this transitioning period became an important contributory reason for Sidhu to get involved in these matters. The thought that entered his mind was the amount of food that would be given out at the forthcoming Khalsa celebrations, and the scarcity of food these migrants faced, whilst making their difficult journey across the mountainous terrain. This brought about the concept of Khalsa Aid which is principally a humanitarian relief agency founded by Sidhu in 1999, based largely on the teachings of the Sikh Gurus who preached the well-being of all citizens irrespective of race. Soon after launching, Khalsa Aid successfully provided relief efforts in several disasters, largely through the donations of members of the Sikh community globally, with its principle funding obtained by local Sikhs. It has relentlessly dedicated itself to providing humanitarian relief in areas that are undergoing a crisis, disaster or any other type of emergency scenario. The principle thing that separates Khalsa Aid from other humanitarian organizations is the transparency that can be observed in its systems -- the organization doesn’t believe in the idea of making a profit or money XUbw istI ngr kIrqn 2016

15

out of a disaster, and ensures that the donations are properly handled, without being disclosed to any group or individuals. As simplistic as it sounds, the Khalsa Aid motto is one of the most difficult to come to terms with for many people around the world today. If one were to scrutinize the chaotic social, political, ethnic, and religious divisions that take place in our society today, it can easily be reflected that people around the world are not applying the Khalsa motto. Wars, atrocities, and terrorist activities continue to occur regularly around the globe. Ethnic divisions have become commonplace in several sectors of society. Regularly on our television sets and in the newspapers, we see people of every religion misusing the interpretation of a particular religious text to justify their bad deeds. It is now more than ever that the Khalsa Aid motto needs to be embraced in order to save society from the everyday tensions, risks and threats it faces. The world would be a better place if everyone treated others with dignity, empathy, love, and compassion irrespective of race or religion.

Waris Ahluwalia to Star as Indian-American Hero

Bhagat Singh Thind

18

By Frances Kai-Hwa Wang Director Harjus Singh is finishing up post-production for his film, "All Quiet on the Home Front," based on the story of Bhagat Singh Thind, who fought for U.S. citizenship in a landmark 1923 U.S. Supreme Court case. Starring Sikh actor and designer Waris Ahluwalia, the film explores issues of identity, citizenship, and veterans. "This was a human story of a World War I U.S. Army veteran who was willing to give his life for a country that no longer wanted him," Singh told NBC News. "Reflecting on the themes of 'What do we define to be an American' and 'How do we treat our veterans,' I also found the imagery of a Sikh with his identity in full U.S. Army attire. And as 2015 proceeded and there was this sense that you had to look a certain way to be perceived as an 'American,' I wanted to show that a person with a turban and beard can be a U.S. Army veteran and an American hero." The film, which began as Singh's master's thesis for Chapman University's graduate program in film directing, tells how Thind returns home after serving in the U.S. Army during World War I to find that the laws had changed and his U.S. citizenship had been revoked. As he and his IrishAmerican lawyer (played by Joe Coffey) argue their case, their relationship also transforms from one of strangers to brothers. Singh said that, even though he was "some random film school directing student," he was able to reach out to Ahluwalia through community XUbw istI ngr kIrqn 2016

When 21 Sikhs

Faced 10,000 Pathans

In A Sparta Style Last Stand

25

In the summer of 1897, the British faced a major rebellion by the Pashtuns on the Samana range of the Hindu Kush Mountains in Pakistan. At the time the whole region was under the British rule but their hold on the North West Frontier was shaky. Saragarhi was a small communications post held by 21 soldiers of the 36th Sikh Regiment of the British Army. The post enabled communications between Fort Lockhart and Fort Gulistan and was a significant tactical line of defense. In order to cut-off any contact between Fort Lockhart and Fort Gulistan, the Pashtuns attacked the communications post in Saragarhi quite sure that a handful of soldiers could not do anything to stop the siege in any significant way. The leader of the pack Ishwar Singh had different plans, however Ishwar Singh knew that holding off the army of Pashtuns was neither practical nor logical but one thing that Sikhs are widely known for is their bravery. Ishwar Singh ordered his men to prepare for battle while he sent out the message to Lt. Col. John Haughton at Fort Lockhart to send in reinforcements. The main strategy of the Sikh Regiment was to force the Pashtuns to engage in a battle and hold them off till help arrived even if it meant sacrificing their lives to defend the post. When the battle began and the Pashtuns suffered heavy casualties in efforts to breach a part of the wall of the picket, offers were made to the soldiers in return for their surrender but they vehemently refused. Fierce had-to-hand fighting ensued as the regiment held-off the ferocious attacks courageously. The first man to get injured was Bhagwan Singh and shortly before the end, the lead commander Ishwar Singh ordered his men to retreat while he took the mantle to delay the Pashtun’s charge. The last man to fall was Gurmukh Singh, the heliograph operator, whose battle cry, “Bole So Nihal, Sat Sri Akal,” was heard until the end. No Sikh survived the battle but the regiment till then had made sure that reinforcements reach Fort Gulistan to prevent any losses on other Forts. The story of the courage shown by those 21 Sikhs is taught in schools of France and remembered as one of the eight collective stories on bravery published by UNESCO. 21 Sikhs inflicted heavy losses to the Pashtuns taking out a total of 600 Pathans in the battle. The soldiers were awarded the Indian order of merit and the battle is still remembered today as one of the most epic last stands by an Indian regiment in its history.
