SEA DOO FISH PRO:

DOES IT FISH? S

hort answer: a resounding yes, but to really appreciate the fishability of this fun and efficient vessel, you’ve got to give one a try. We did, and fishing on this sleek powerful personal watercraft is more fun than you can imagine. Everything about this little vessel is fun, fun, fun and user friendly. We trailered it with a Honda Civic and launched at a “kayak ramp.” The detachable rear cooler easily converts to a great livewell, and the positioning of the rear rod holders enables a nice spread for trolling. And everything’s within easy reach of the driver or passenger. While the recommended navigational depth is officially 3 feet or deeper, the actual draft of this angler-friendly vessel is only 11 inches. We had no problem drifting and poling through very shallow water chasing bait. Yes, you can definitely cast a net from this vessel, which we did, and there’s ample storage for your net in one of the front hatches.

The modifications on the Sea Doo Fish Pro are definitely angler intuitive. As early owners of Sea Doos pioneered its use as a fishing vessel, the standards required became somewhat universal. The Sea Doo Fish Pro is the result of careful attention to the details these innovators added to their early Sea Doo models. If there are two words that sum up this sporty little vessel, they are “fun” and “efficient.” The Garmin electronics screen is easy to view and access while driving, and the achievable speeds on this powerhouse personal watercraft will blow your hat off. With a suggested retail price of only $14,999, the Fish Pro is a lot of vessel and years of fun on the water for the price. Another important attribute of this class of personal watercraft

By CAM Staff

is access. Its small footprint give you access to launch spots that would not be accessible by most traditional motorized watercraft. Again, if you really want to know how much fun this vessel can bring to your fishing endeavors, just test drive one for yourself. We did, and we’re convinced the Fish Pro fishes! SAILFISH OR BUST OFF WEST PALM BEACH

W

e were trolling along under blue skies when the back right rod started bleeding line. It was a good fish, whatever it was. But just like that, the line snapped and the fish was gone. We were all pumped after the first bite of the day. Off West Palm Beach, Stacy Flemming, Jimmy Dean and I had met the bait man early to get some goggle eyes. We were in search of big fish. Mahi, tuna, sailfish and cobia were all on the list. As we pulled baits, boats began to arrive on the water. There was a Trump boat parade that morning, a Trumptilla, and nearly all of them came out to fish. It got a little crazy, so we decided to move farther out. That was our lucky move. As soon as we got baits back in the water, a rod started shedding line, not at a furious pace, just leisurely. “He doesn’t even know he’s hooked yet,” said Dean. About that time, line started screaming out of the reel. The fish made a long first run, and as I started to reel

By Gary Turner

down on it, it leapt. It was a nice sailfish! After what seemed like an hour, the fish started to slow. We maneuvered close, and Dean grabbed its bill and unhooked the 4/0 circle hook. He revived the fish and let it swim away. Dean has a saying, “On the boat, all is calm until it’s chaos.” Oh, how true that is! We were enjoying the sunshine and 100-foot water clarity when we hooked the next fish. Then, all of sudden, we had two. Fleming and Dean grabbed the rods. I scrambled to clear the lines. Dean’s fish came unbuttoned, but Fleming had a leaper on. We soon saw why that sailfish was doing its best to stay in the air. A large bull shark had spotted it. The shark was all over our fish! Regulations say you should leave sailfish in the water, but we had to save this one. As I backed the boat in, Fleming and Dean yanked it in the boat just as the shark made another run at it. Whew, that was exciting! With the shark out of sight, we stood watch as Dean

revived and released his fish. After several more, we called it a day. The next day, we didn’t see much activity until afternoon. A large shark passed with cobia in tow, but none took our baits. Then we saw diving birds and fish smashing baitfish on the surface. About a minute later, the back-left rod bent hard. Fleming got a hold of it, and that fish was moving. When we finally saw color, it was a tuna. Fleming reeled as fast as he could, while we watched another big bull shark homing in on the tuna’s trajectory. The shark hit the tuna right above the tail but couldn’t hang on! Injured, the tuna came quickly to the gaff. We had one more hook-up from that school of tuna before we decided to drop baits on a wreck to top off the cooler. It was a great couple of days off South Florida. Pro Topwater Strategies for Redfish & Seatrout

P

ENN Fleet Capt. Chris Condon fishes the shallows around Charleston, South Carolina, where redfish are suckers for topwater lures. Low-light is the best time to throw a topwater, but Condon also employs the technique any time of day when fishing over oyster bars. “Topwater is the only way to fish without getting snagged,” he explained. He especially likes topwater fishing in calm conditions with no wind, when the lure has the best chance to get a fish’s attention. Condon’s favorite application is when a school of reds is crashing shrimp along a marsh bank. Condon will toss a Berkley J-Walker 100 a few feet ahead of the pack and wait for them to get close to start twitching the lure. For increased accuracy, Condon likes a 7-foot, fast-action, medium power Fenwick HMG Inshore. The rod is well suited to heavier lures and allows him to walk the dog with a tight pattern. Condon matches the rod to a PENN Clash II 2500 reel. The reel is

lightweight, with a full metal body to reduce flex. He said the HT-100 drag picks up smoothly, without sticking or surging, which could pull the hook. 700 miles away, Capt. CT Williams, a PENN Fleet Captain from Shell Beach, Louisiana, turns to topwater lures for gator trout. Williams likes a Berkley J-Walker 120. He fishes reflective lures—such as the blue and chrome “Blue Bullet” color—in low-light, and he’ll switch to Bone colored bait during the brighter part of the day. Williams said the biggest challenge to topwater fishing is hooking the fish. A big trout strikes with a violent explosion, shaking its head, and throwing water everywhere. It can be tough, but anglers should wait for the fish to start pulling the lure away before setting the hook. A trout’s paper-thin mouth requires a delicate touch. Williams suggested letting the tackle do the work. He likes a softer, parabolic rod with a long, slow bend. The rod absorbs the shock of the strike and prevents the angler from jerking the

lure out of the fish’s mouth. Once the fish takes off, Williams relies on a PENN Clash II with super smooth drag. With trout, the lower end of the drag pressure is more important than maximum drag. “Smooth drag through the range applies steady pressure through the fight,” Williams said. A lighter drag setting keeps the hook from pulling, while the softer rod absorbs the headshakes. Topwater fishing isn’t only effective, it’s fun. The excitement of watching a predator attack its prey gets the heart racing and blood flowing.

SUZUKI DF300B OUTBOARD

T

he new DF300B V-6 4-stroke joins Suzuki’s flagship 350hp contra-rotating outboard, and brings a new level of acceleration, performance and efficiency to a whole new class of boats rated for 300hp maximum (or 600/900hp maximum in twin/triple installations). Suzuki’s proven contra-rotating propeller system provides superior “grip” on the water when boaters hit the throttle, for excellent hole shot and strong acceleration, even when pushing heavy, fully loaded boats. With the engine’s power distributed over six blades, rather than three, Suzuki is able to reduce the size of the gears and create a sleek, hydrodynamic lower unit that slices through the water with minimum drag. This increased propeller blade surface area and contra-rotating action also deliver exceptional acceleration while providing incredible reverse thrust. In the Suzuki tradition, this new outboard is packed with innovative technology from the bottom to the top. The DF300B’s robust 4.4-liter displacement engine features a 10.5:1 compression ratio and duel fuel injectors for optimum performance and efficiency using 87 octane fuel. By using two smaller fuel injectors, Suzuki delivers a precise amount of fuel to the center of the combustion chamber, improving atomization and avoiding off-center combustion, a common cause of engine knock. Injecting 100% of the fuel into the cylinder at once also keeps the fuel cool, providing additional power. A dual-louver, direct air intake system on the DF300B helps the engine breath freely for optimum performance while separating out water, spray and moisture for improved reliability. This unique intake system also provides the engine with cooler, denser air for a more powerful combustion cycle. The DF300B features the offset driveshaft engine layout found on other Suzuki outboards, allowing for an overall compact design, along with two-stage gear reduction (2.29:1) for plenty of low-end torque without sacrificing top-end performance. This compact size, light weight (727 lbs. for 25” shaft) and easy integration with Suzuki Precision Control drive-by-wire throttle and shift controls make the DF300B a clear choice for rigging on a wide variety of boats in single or twin installations — particularly on vessels with second stations.

Build Your Own

FISHING BUDDY T

o a father and an angler, there’s nothing sweeter than the phrase, “Daddy, can we go fishing today?” I heard those words the first time three years ago from the open face and high-pitched lilt of a 6-year-old boy. It was the reward for years of careful cultivation. We’ve fished together since he was a toddler. Before, it had always been my idea, a way to drag him outside on a warm afternoon. Those early trips to a small neighborhood pond were frustrating. He wanted to do it himself, so Dad picked through snarled lines while the boy mucked around in the shallows, throwing rocks and scaring fish. At some point, I gave up on catching fish. That pivotal moment freed us both to enjoy time together. To a 4-year-old, sharing crackers with minnows that dart from beneath a dock is as engaging as a fish on the line. Frogs, turtles and the blue heron that fished the same spawning flats we did were as integral to the experience as fish. Now, as a 9-year-old, that kid stands in the front of the boat, ties his own rigs and pounds

the banks with skill. Watching his growth as an angler is immensely rewarding, and keeping it fun was/is the key to feeding his desire.

The Fishing Fishing is more fun when fish are biting. Pond bream are great for young anglers because techniques are simple and the action is fast. In saltwater, seatrout and whiting provide the same kind of action that keeps their attention. For the first few outings, leave the boat trailered. Fishing from the bank, from a pier or in the surf provides freedom of movement for them to explore. If they lose interest in fishing, they can chase crabs, look in the buckets of neighboring anglers, hunt for shells or wade the shallows.

Catch And Keep Like sports trophies, Children want and take pride in having something to show for their efforts. Allow kids to take part in the process of catching, cleaning and cooking fresh fish for dinner. In the process, they’ll learn how the meat they eat makes it to their plate.

A Few Tips • Be Patient: Don’t plan on fishing yourself. The adult’s job is to cast and untangle lines, bait hooks, unhook fish and avoid being hooked. • Take Snacks: The most important items in the tackle box are snacks and juice boxes. • Don’t Push It: If your kids would rather throw rocks, let them. • Their Gear: Children love stuff that is theirs. Get a small tackle box for them to carry. Load it with a small pair of pliers and a few inexpensive lures. • Lures: Some kids just want to throw it out and reel it in. Small inline spinners and some jigs are designed to catch anything that swims, and there’s no wrong way to fish them. • Let Them Learn: Nothing is more aggravating than being constantly told what to do. Offer help, but let them learn from their own mistakes.

THE EVOLUTION OF YAMAHA BOATS

I

n 1989, following the consumer success of the WaveRunner line, and as the Yamaha brand captivated a whole new audience on the water, Yamaha engineers began to explore the feasibility of creating even more exciting and memorable experiences for our customers on the water through new, innovative product offerings. The success of jet drive systems in WaveRunners drove Yamaha engineers to explore the possibility of a larger product, a boat, around that same technology. Three engineers in Japan started work on the first prototype boat models. This included Hirofumi Imaeda, who had experience designing outboard engines, Tomoyoshi Koyanagi, who had deep experience designing WaveRunners, and Yoshiyuki Kaneko, who created prototypes of four passenger WaveRunner models. At that time, 50 horsepower was the most powerful Yamaha engine that could be used in a boat application but it was not powerful enough for a 20-foot jet boat. It was then that Yamaha began to envision its boats with twin engines. Initial tests of the twin boats proven successful in Japan, and in February of 1991, Yamaha released its first jet boat, known as the RJP, as a concept boat at the Tokyo and Osaka Boat Shows. Showcasing at these shows attracted the attention of the larger global marine community, and the positive reception

prompted Yamaha to continue to explore its feasibility as a mass marketed consumer boat, sold through Yamaha dealers. Interestingly enough, one of the American boat builders who took note of these early prototypes at the boat shows, expressed serious interest selling the boats in the US. After a short exploratory and research phase, it was decided that the US market was indeed ripe for such a product, and in 1995 a handful of the Japanese team working on the project moved to the US to continue development. Yamaha Motor Corporation USA purchased a boat building facility in Vonore, Tennessee and made the decision to produce jet boats there. It was here that Yamaha’s US based product team joined in the development including Scott “Hollywood” Watkins, the IJSBA Hall of Fame freerider who birthed the WaveRunner boom in the US. The team expanded the original design of the RJP and created a radical new, family friendly design that would become the staple of Yamaha Boats from that point on.

The new design provided more space than any other bowrider in the industry thanks to the compact nature of the engines and jet pumps units. Even though these boats used the 110-horsepower engines popularized with the WaveRunner line, they were able to be mounted inside the hull in what became a true engine-less layout. Next up was the hull design and Yamaha experimented with several prototypes, utilizing a wide range of different shapes and molds. When matched with the twin engine power plant, it became clear rather quickly that this boat could offer a level of performance and exhilaration unlike anything else on the water today. In May of 1995, Yamaha debuted its first jet boat called “Exciter” and it was an instant hit in the market. Soon after, development continued and Yamaha introduced new boats including the “LS-2000” and “SR-230,” each of which grew the market and acceptance of jet drive boats. And the momentum has never slowed. Today, Yamaha jet boats have become the gold standard for all open bow family fun runabout boats, outselling all other boats in their classes. Innovation and engineering are only two aspects of Yamaha culture and values. For more information, visit YamahaBoats.com or call 1-800-88-YAMAHA.

LIMITING OUT ON GULF SNAPPER

L

ast month, a couple buddies and I booked a charter for the opening day of Florida’s Gulf red snapper season with Capt. Brian Smith, of Big Bend Charters out of Steinhatchee. Capt. B. has a 34-foot power catamaran with enough room on the deck to play a game of volleyball. If you’ve ever been red snapper fishing, you understand the process. The day starts with loading the boat with tackle ranging from 8-pound light tackle to 30-pound bottom fishing rigs. A complement of frozen baits, including Spanish sardines, squid and chum blocks fill one of the big coolers. We ran out to a spot south of the Steinhatchee River and broke out light tackle to catch live bait. It’s basically bream fishing gear, using tiny slivers of squid to catch pinfish and other finned critters. All would be used to create an offshore smorgasbord for snapper, grouper, king mackerel, cobia and more. With the livewell full, it was just over an hour’s run at 27 knots to reach our first drop in 65 feet of water. We were anchored over a ledge with about 3 feet of relief. That doesn’t seem like much, but in the vast expanse of flat bottom out there, a small change in the topography can create an entire ecosystem. Each of us took a corner of the big catamaran and dropped live baits down. Before the bait could reach the bottom, our offerings were usually inhaled by either a grouper or a snapper. These were not small fish.

The snapper averaged about 28 inches, and the grouper were well in excess of the 24-inch minimum length. We would catch a couple fish at a spot and then move to another. The idea is that once you get a couple fish on the line, the remaining fish tend to get a bit finicky, and the bite can slow down. When a fish came on board, we paused for a quick photo and shouted “atta-boy” from across the boat. In all, we limited out on red snapper and had five gag grouper as bonus fish for the day. From first-hand experience I can tell you there’s no shortage of bottomfishing adventure to be had in the Gulf of Mexico. The Florida Gulf snapper season remains open through July 25. Alabama’s season runs Fridays through Mondays until July 1 9 .

Louisiana will remain open Fridays through Sundays, and on holidays, until the state quota is met. Mississippi is open seven days a week with an undetermined closing date as fisheries managers closely monitor catches to avoid overrunning the quota. The Texas season ends Aug. 2 for charter boats and Aug. 3 for private vessels. As summer gets in full swing, give some thought to ways you can get outdoors, enjoy each other’s company at a distance and get rid of those socialdistancing blues. MOUNTAIN TIDES OF

SOUTHEASTERN

STRIPER RUNS

J

ust like their saltwater brethren, “landlocked” striped bass in reservoirs across the country are highly mobile. Even restricted by dams, they retain the instinct to migrate, and this tendency leads to some of the most exciting fishing that exists. When stripers run up rivers and creeks each spring and summer, anglers are likely to encounter very large fish in small waters. The fish come in waves, with an initial spring spawning run followed by a larger influx when summer heat pushes fish in search of thermal refuge. Garner Reid, of Georgia’s Cohutta Fishing Company, has made it his life’s work to target big river-run stripers with a fly rod. Sure, he could catch them sinking cut bait, but it’s more fun to dance streamers around blowdowns in

anticipation that a 20-plus-pounder might be waiting in ambush. The furious fights can be compared to those of big redfish, only they occur in a river, where current and cover work against the angler. “If a big striper decides he’s going to wrap your line around a snag, there’s no way you’re going to stop it,” said Reid. “You’ve got to be a little lucky.” Reid’s homewaters are Georgia’s Chattahoochee and Etowah rivers, but striped bass run in every system where they are present. The Caney Fork, the Hiwassee, the Cumberland, the Saluda, the list of Southeastern rivers with good striper runs is long. Reid has fished a lot of them and said the similarities are a reminder that striped bass are by nature a saltwater species.

By CAM Staff

“The amount of flow coming down the river dictates where you find fish,” he said. “Dam releases are like tides. High water is a large incoming tide. Just like in saltwater, the fish are pushing up as high as they can get.” Striped bass become ambush predators in these “mountain tides.” In high water, they post up in creek mouths and on big blowdowns. When flows are low, they retreat to the depths in oxygen-rich holes below shoals. Their sensitivity to sunlight means they’re most likely to prowl in low light. Reid said fish in ambush mode are more active. The fishing is faster, and floating or intermediate lines with un-weighted streamers can be worked relatively shallow. When stripers retreat to the depths, it’s sometimes necessary to break out sinking line and weighted streamers for a slow presentation fish can’t resist. With this need for versatility, Reid carries an arsenal of 8- to 10-weight rods rigged with floating, intermediate and full sinking lines. Fly selection is determined by available forage. Popular streamers like Clousers, Deceivers and Half & Halfs fit the bill in sizes and colors to match natural baitfish. On a particular river, that might be a 2-inch threadfin shad or it might be a 9-inch rainbow trout. Reid said bigger fish, which can weigh 20, 30, even 40 pounds, prefer larger baits. Even with a 10-weight fly rod, it’ll take some luck to get a fish like that to the boat. Check out Cohutta Fishing Company at www.cohuttafishingco.com. Follow Garner Reid on Instagram and Facebook.

HAVALON TALON:

CUTTING EDGE INNOVATION A By CAM Staff

ny surgeon or taxidermist will tell you the best tool for cutting flesh is a scalpel. And that’s where knife-maker Havalon got its start. Their parent company, Havel’s, is a medical device company that supplies scalpels for surgical use. When the idea arose to bring the same incredibly sharp blades to the outdoors, it gave tools to outdoorsmen that are more precise than any hunting or fillet knife ever invented. The first Havalon Piranta was a blade modeled after an autopsy scalpel that folded into a sturdy handle. It offered all sorts of outdoorsmen the benefits of an ultra-sharp scalpel blade in the form of a pocketknife. But the blade itself was not built to handle the rigors of everyday use. That’s when Havalon began tinkering to find the best combination of sharpness and strength. The resulting innovation has made Havalon one of the top-selling knife companies in the country and the leader in the hunting industry. “We have always felt—that a sharp blade does not need to be used with

any excessive force,” said Havalon Marketing Director Ryan Cull. “This is still a core belief of our company, but we know there is a segment of consumers that want to have sturdier blades.” The need for a sturdier blade that retains Havalon-level sharpness launched the Talon project. Designers set out to create a knife handle that accommodates an entire collection of different ultra-sharp blade styles. With a 3-inch serrated blade, a 3-inch gut hook combo blade and fillet blades of 5, 7 and 9 inches, it is the only knife you’ll ever need at the cutting board or skinning pole. This all-in-one precision cutting tool was three years in the making. Designing a handle mechanism to swap out blades quickly and easily was achieved with the ingeniously simple push-button Quik Change II system. Finding the sweet spot between scalpel sharp and durable was the next step, and the blades also needed to be tailored to their particular uses. Through more tinkering and testing, Havalon landed on AUS-8

steel—the gold standard—which offers the best combination of edge retention and strength. Thickness and shapes of the different blades were custom designed. Fillet knives require flexibility; gut hooks do not. Each blade type was carefully considered and rigorously tested to achieve optimal performance for its intended use. The final result is a single knife kit that outperforms a whole cutlery set of traditional knives. Extreme sharpness is something Havalon users have come to expect with blades intended for replacement when they lose their edge. Talon blades are different. They are scalpel

sharp, yet they are strong enough to be resharpened. “So long as users don’t pry on the blades with extreme force or damage them in some other unforeseeable way, they should be able to go years without buying replacements,” said Cull. “The versatility of the blade styles along with the strength and sharpness of the blades make the Talon one of the most innovative products to come out in the industry in years.” To see all the features of the Talon and all of Havalon’s other scalpel-sharp knives, go to www.havalon.com.

CATCH UP WITH THE

K

OF SUMMER By CAM Staff

Mike Weskalnies caught this kingfish fishing with Show Me The Fish Charters off Anna Maria Island, Fla.

I

t’s that time of year when warming water temperatures in the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico have sent king mackerel on their annual migrations. The action is pretty much year-round down in South Florida and the Keys, but their northward progression makes them more and more prevalent now through early fall in the waters off the Carolinas on the Atlantic Coast and as far west as Texas in the Gulf. Kings prefer a water temperatures from about 68 to 73 degrees, which extremely specific for any species. This magic temperature window is why they’re moving, and it’s how anglers find them. While anglers in central Florida see the front end of the migration in early spring, kingfishing gets better in north Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina through the summertime. The same is true in the Gulf. Summer is when they start showing up thicker in the northern regions of the Gulf.

PHOTO COURTESY OF CAPT. LARRY MCGUIRE.

No matter where on the migration route your fishery is, kingfish will be looking for the same things when they get there. They prowl the open ocean around offshore structure and green plankton-rich waters in the thermal range where they are comfortable. They can be found on ledges, reefs, oil rigs and wrecks because that’s where the baitfish are. In summer, when baitfish move closer to shore, the kings come with them. Spotting kingfish slashing through schools of bait is one of the most exciting spectacles in sport fishing. At speeds in excess of 30 mph, they crash through teeming wads of baitfish, sometimes sending showers of threadfin into the air. Finding feeding kings is a matter of identifying preferable temperature breaks and structure using charts before heading offshore. Once there, electronics become important to scout for underwater activity. If you’re lucky,

diving birds will give away bait and surfacefeeding kings. Trolling is generally the most effective method to target kings, and although they will hit lures, good live bait is preferred by most tournament guys who are specifically targeting big smoker kings. Blue runners, pogies (menhaden), pilchards, threadfin herring, any bait with some silver flash is good. Switching them out and keeping them lively is important. And when the fishing is slow, it doesn’t hurt to break out a sabiki rig and catch whatever bait is on-site. Idle speed is about right for pulling live baits. It’s important to stagger depth and distance from the boat to cover a wide swath of water. Bumping the boat into neutral and just drifting when the sonar shows good bottom or good bait can also lead to a hook-up. If you’re moving slow enough, a good chum slick might be in order to draw them in.

The Return of a Legend By Ben Martin, Editor in Chief

ea Cat pioneered the introduction and development of catamaran hull boats in the U.S. in the early 1990s. The versatility, economy and smooth comfortable ride of the dual hull concept quickly caught on, providing Sea Cat one of the highest customer satisfaction ratings in the industry. Forrest Munden spearheaded Sea Cat operations, which were eventually purchased by World Cat in 1997. World Cat would later also acquire Glacier Bay, another cat hull brand known for its “creature comforts” and expansive use of storage hatches. Munden, having achieved the “American Dream” moved into a comfortable retirement with his lovely wife Wanda in Greenville, North Carolina.

World Cat and its lower priced competitor Twin Vee dominated the cat boat market for the next 20 years. Three years ago, we heard a rumor that Munden was re-entering the boat-building industry and bringing back his iconic Sea Cat brand. According to Munden, the dream to relaunch Sea Cat became a reality when he received a commitment from former Sea Cat dealer Charlie Henderson, of Waveland, Mississippi. Needless to say, we were intrigued. Like all the other former Sea Cat owners, our loyalty and satisfaction with the original Sea Cat boats ran deep. On Jan. 1, 2019, Coastal Angler Magazine acquired the No. 2 hull production vessel from the newly formed Sea Cat Boats. Test

after test after test have shown this vessel to be everything we had hoped for. Paired with Suzuki engines, a magnificent Ray Marine electronics system and a kick ass Wet Sounds thumping sound system, our new 26-foot Sea Cat performs at a 10 in every category, both inshore and offshore. The 14-inch draft of the Sea Cat 260 makes this vessel one of the most versatile boats on the water. Smooth riding, great fuel economy and an exceptionally shallow draft combined with high quality seats, latches and hull composites make the Sea Cat 260 one of the best buys in its category. We couldn’t be happier with our purchase. Word on the street says Sea Cat is quietly preparing to roll out a 36-foot model that promises to be one of the fastest fishing boats in the industry. Welcome back Forrest.

The Perfect Social Distancing Activity Just Got E-Zer

“For Me, It’s a Fishing Tool”

C

apt. Mickey Brelsford says his Rebel free-fall unit is the perfect fishing tool, providing him a “good, solid anchoring position.” In the past, using a windlass yielded poor retrieval results and left no room for customization, like adding special attachments or splicing rope and chain. “I don’t know how many times I’ve been on boats where [the line is] hanging up, snarling, getting knotted up in the windlass or shredding line,” Brelsford said. A retired policeman, Capt. Brelsford enjoys time fishing near the coast of St. James City, Fla. on his 37-foot “Nostalgic Lady,” a 1981 Hatteras Sportfish that carries 300 feet of 5/8 rope and 20 feet of heavy-duty chain. After adding a pulpit to his vessel, Capt. Brelsford used to pull up all his rope by hand, wasting time and energy on multiple retrieval and deployment attempts as he tried to find the perfect “boat position.” “The easiest way I can explain boat position is if you’re at the baseball game, you’re either playing—which is fishing—or you’re watching the game, which means you’re not,” Brelsford said. Brelsford decided he’d rather be in the game than on the sidelines, so installing the Rebel EZ-5 became a no-brainer after researching product

information and helpful documents on the company website, then calling the drum anchor winch manufacturer’s technical support team for additional pointers. Unlike E-Z Anchor Puller Mfg. Co’s two direct drive series (the Hero and Patriot series), the Rebel drum anchor winch has a clutch and friction plate design that allows the drum to freespool when the clutch plate is disengaged. To get that “good, solid anchoring position,” press and hold the “raise/power up” side of the button for about five seconds. This will cause the clutch plate to once again rotate, but this time clamping down on the drum and holding the boat at anchor. “Once I deploy my anchor and it goes into a free-fall, it’s straight down to the bottom as quick as it can go,” Brelsford said. “And then, once I set the anchor I can free-line out as much anchor rode as I need: that’s what I call boat position.”

As an added bonus, the Rebel drum anchor winch is compatible with an E-Z Anchor Puller wireless long-range remote, which controls your drum anchor winch from anywhere on the boat. The wireless remotes are available for the Hero and Patriot series, as well. Capt. Brelsford purchased his on the company website, ezanchorpuller.com. “This [unit] here—don’t worry about it—it just rolls right on and keeps on rollin’. That’s what it is: E-Z!” Brelsford concluded.

couple state record fish arrowed by bowfishermen this spring raise the question: Is there a size threshold where baitfish become gamefish? A striped mullet from Arkansas and a gizzard shad from Missouri were both recently recognized as alternative-method state records. The mullet measured nearly 25 inches in length and weighed 5-pounds, 6-ounces. It was arrowed from an oxbow lake off the Arkansas River a few miles upstream of its confluence with the Mississippi River. The gizzard shad weighed 3 pounds, 9 ounces. It was caught from a private pond in southeastern Missouri. Both fish are species considered to be bait by most anglers, yet both are certainly big enough to put a bend in a rod. Another question some might ask is what in the world a mullet was doing up the Arkansas River some 500 river miles from the Gulf of Mexico. Although they spawn in saltwater, striped mullet migrate into freshwater. According to Jeff Quinn, a biologist with Arkansas Game & Fish, they’ve even been known to navigate through the dams high into the Arkansas and Ouachita rivers.

apt. Tim Barefoot is having trouble concentrating. In the middle of May, he was on rockfish so thick he had to ice his arms in the evenings. Reports from across the Mid-Atlantic indicate huge spawning runs of striped bass up coastal rivers that ramped up in the Photo Credit: Tim Barefoot middle of March. This is very good news considering all the doom and gloom we’ve been hearing about Atlantic striped bass populations lately. Barefoot has first-hand information from the James, Rappahannock, Occoquan and Potomac rivers. “They have all been chock full of fish and bait this year,” he said. “And it’s the nicest class of fish we’ve seen in several years.” The action is incredible for fish in the 3- to 12-pound range, and Barefoot is seeing the occasional 15- to 20-pounder. But he was almost as excited about the baitfish as the stripers. “One of the most encouraging things was to see the way the herring showed up,” he said. “The herring are so thick they brought the loons with them from the ocean. And when the herring are here like that, everything’s feeding and everything’s healthy.” Typically the rockfish will stick around in the rivers until mid-June or later. Until then, Barefoot said there’s no need for live bait. He’s been wearing them out on a Super Fluke rigged on a Barefoot Jumping Jig with the barb mashed down for easy releases. For more information, contact Capt. Tim Barefoot through his website at barefootcatsandtackle.com.

ecent reports coming in from all over the coast of Massachusetts tell of bays filled with schoolie stripers and bluefish. Meanwhile, bluefin tuna have shown up in numbers and size offshore, and the bottomfishing is picking up, also, with good mix of doormat flukes, black sea bass and scads of porgie. All-in-all, things are setting up well for a great summer off New England. The trick with the striper might be finding one within the 28- to 35-inch slot limit. It’s a good problem to have, and it looks good for the future of the fishery. In areas, both smaller fish and cows are prevalent, it’s the keepers that are tough to find. Off Cape Cod, in the Falmouth area, birds are working

over schoolies and blues, with a lot of squid and eels in the rip. Get a cast off into the birds, and hooking up is not a problem. In Buzzards Bay, the big cows are pushing schools of pogies. The bite has been fantastic when you can find them. On the South Shore, the mouth of North River is filled with a ridiculous number of schoolie bass in the 15- to 25-inch range. Tube and worm anglers are wearing them out, with the occasional larger fish showing up. Live mackerel is the bait of choice for those seeking larger fish on the outside ledges. Look around a bit, and the mackerel shouldn’t be too hard to find.

Out of Boston, the harbor is holding some big stripers right now, offering anglers the chance to do battle with drag-peelers above the slot. Trolling seems to be the most productive tactic, with tubes working shallow and big fish coming on live mackerel trolled on lead-core 25 to 30 feet deep. Shore anglers are seeing scads of small bass, while the bigger fish are definitely feeding more at night. Swimming lures and live eels off the jetties or oceanfront have been producing the biggest stripers. Get out and get ’em!

TIME TO SWITCH TO SUMMER TACTICS

This time of year is also when some of the snappers and the kingfish spawn. Typically it peaks on a new or full moon in mid July. It’s a good time of year to catch a real “smoker” on light line. The night bite can be awesome this time of year, but another advantage to fishing at night is the comfort factor. Set up offshore just Tim Barefoot before dark, and you don’t have to worry about sunburn. Catch the livewell full of squid and baitfish, catch fish all night, and be there for hen it comes to summertime fishing, here are some the early morning bite. Get your work done in the early morning, then go home and get some sleep while the fish are “chillin’ out” in the cooler. observations I’ve made over the years. Around the end of June and the beginning of July, changes in daytime temperatures and the duration of daylight hours make it wise For rigging and fishing videos, go to to fish at night. The major feeding periods each day occur at dawn and BAREFOOTCATSAND TACKLE.COM dusk. It’s the time of year when you need to set aside some time to fish both inshore and offshore at night. Offshore fishing can be red hot right now with the use of lights. Full disclosure: I know the owner of Hydro Glow and have used his products for years. I am convinced the green light draws fish to the boat. I always anchor when I’m in water shallower than 200 to 250 feet, and this is a perfect time to put the lights out to attract bait like flying fish, squid, sardines and cigar minnows up to the surface where they are very vulnerable to a sabiki. Keep at least one person on the sabiki until the livewell is completely full. Keep a big beautiful bait out under a float and one down 20 or 30 feet deep right around the outside of the circle of light. I like to call this area “the ring of death.” It is where the light dissipates into dark water. Don’t act surprised when a large wahoo swims right by the boat for a good look and then returns 30 seconds later to smoke a bait. The anticipation followed by the visible ferocity of a bite like this is U.S.A.F. Photo by William Blankenship exhilarating.

No Matter Where the Journey Takes You... Fishpond is a family-owned Colorado company with our roots firmly set in the shadows of the majestic Rocky Mountains. When Fishpond was founded in 1999, we made a deliberate choice to disrupt the status quo in the fly fishing and outdoor industry by designing products that pushed the boundaries of form and function. The rugged backdrop of our headquarters provides us with the perfect testing ground for new product designs. Over the past two decades, we’ve focused on tough construction and evaluated the performance of everything we make against a rigorous set of requirements. There’s a reason you’ll find our bags in some of the harshest environments on the planet. When it comes to keeping your gear dry and secure, nothing compares to our Thunderhead Line of submersible packs and bags. Built using ultra-tough, TPU coated nylon, and a watertight TIZIP zipper, the entire collection of bags redefines the word ‘bomb-proof.’ In the winter of 2020, when adventurers traveled from New Zealand to Antarctica with vital equipment, they took our Thunderhead Submersible Duffel Bags. Anglers traveling deep into the jungles of the Amazon in search of Golden Dorado and Peacock Bass last fall simply would not make the trip without their Submersible Backpacks. In the summer of 2019, our entire Thunderhead Line was on hand for a scientific expedition to understand how rivers in Southwest Alaska are changing over time. If the true essence of an adventure lies in the journey, and not the destination, the way we travel makes a difference. For us, it has not been enough to simply create gear that holds up to the test of time. To that end, we have taken our responsibility to the environment and minimizing our impact seriously. From the Cyclepond recycled fabric that goes into our Thunderhead Line, to the regenerated fishing nets and carpets that go into our Upstream Tech Vests, we continue to redefine what it means to make new things without using new resources. No matter where the journey takes you, bring the best.

Caring FOR YOUR Bait T By CAM Staff

he way fish react to live bait is interesting. Predatory fish view struggling or dying prey as an easy meal, right? So why does a half-dead shrimp on the end of the line get ignored? It would seem to represent an easy meal hanging there limp and twitching. Meanwhile, the bait pulling your popping cork across the marsh is going to get absolutely hammered. This runs counter to the theory that fish innately weigh the expenditure versus reward of chasing down prey. Seatrout are always looking for something lively. But what about redfish or any of the other inshore species that are as likely to eat a piece of dead bait as they are a live one? They’ll happily pick up a piece of frozen squid off the bottom, so why would they refuse a sluggish mud minnow on a freeline? It stands to reason that fish, when they are feeding by sight, sound and vibration—rather than smell—don’t even notice a live bait hanging out in the water doing next to nothing. Or maybe it looks unnatural, as if a shrimp that bad off should be bumping along the bottom instead of hanging in the current? Meanwhile, the bait that’s frantically trying to escape the hook it’s impaled on is drawing attention to itself. Active live bait plays on the predatory instincts of fish just like artificial lures. It works for the same reason your dog would rather you throw a tennis ball than hand it to him.

The lesson here is to keep your live bait alive. Baitwells that circulate and aerate by pumping water from outside the boat are the best way to keep live bait happy. The water you’re keeping your bait in is the same water you’re fishing. This is important because sudden changes in temperature or water conditions stuns baits. With a baitwell, when you impale and cast that pinfish, it lands in the same water conditions it just came from. It’s likely to freak out when the world suddenly grows a lot bigger and full of predators, and that’s exactly what you want. If you don’t have a baitwell, a bait tank that circulates and aerates water is almost as good. You’ll have to watch the temperature, though. Cooler water makes for livelier bait in the tank, but be careful how much ice you dump in. You don’t want your finger mullet going into shock when it hits the bay. Finally, smaller coolers or 5-gallon buckets benefit from the addition of a bubbler to add oxygen to the water. These systems are very portable and perfect for kayaks and shore anglers. Remember to change the water every few hours, and don’t overload them with bait to begin with. With any of these systems, the idea is to keep the bait fresh long enough to fish it. Because if your shrimp are lethargic, you’re better off peeling and fishing chunks of them on the bottom than you are presenting them to fish as live baits.

BONDING ENGINE LUBRICATION & FUEL CATALYST TECHNOLOGY

“ProOne has created the ultimate game changer in lubrication and fuel technology”

How this One-Two Punch Combo Makes Sportfishing Boats Run Cleaner, Meaner and Greener After taking the California sportfishing and marine market by storm, ProOne Lubricants is finally bringing their marine lubricants and fuel products to the East Coast. Boat owners are always looking for ways to reduce their operating costs, especially fuel and lubrication repairs. In many marine applications, boaters discovered products that do just that, saving them hundreds of dollars and solving expensive engine problems. “As time goes by, engines become inefficient due to fuel contamination and component deterioration. This results in carbon build-up, oil contamination, and engine damage, and we’re not talking hundreds, we’re talking thousands of dollars and in these uncertain times better insurance is required. That’s where we come in.” said ProOne Marketing Director Josh Munoz.

HOW XPL+ TECHNOLOGY PERFORMS IN YOUR BOAT ENGINE

The products are based on ProOne’s Xtreme Pressure Lubrication XPL+®, originally designed for automotive and boat racing. XPL+ has a strong ionic charge so it bonds to metal giving it extreme pressure protection. The company’s demo video shows that the film strength is actually 50 times more powerful than ordinary lubricants. When XPL+ lubrication is combined with ProOne’s Fuel Maximizer, boat owners have achieved amazing results, saving money on fuel and oil changes, and also reducing their impact on the environment. The Fuel Maximizer is a highly concentrated catalyst that breaks down hard-to-burn fuel molecules. The result? More efficient combustion, which means better fuel economy and lower emissions. Without XPL+@ 4,000 psi

• In a bench cross-axis friction machine test, bearings are subjected to pressure from a spinning race, similar to moving parts in an engine.

With XPL+@ 200,000 psi

• Using regular motor oil without XPL+, the bearing sustains severe damage at only 4,000psi of pressure. • With ProOne’s XPL+ technology, there is minimal damage at 200,000psi...over 50 times the pressure! This means less engine wear and improved engine performance.

THE SOLUTION TO FUEL EFFICIENCY - LIBERATE ITS ENERGY Before Fuel Maximizer • Fuels chemical energy is stored in a Hydrocarbon. • In this state Hydrocarbons do not burn completely resulting in carbon, soot, and harmful emissions.

After Fuel Maximizer • Fuel Maximizer breaks apart large particulates, accelerating the chemical reaction of fuel thus liberating its chemical energy. • Makes Oxygen available to burn more completely thus producing a more efficient burn saving fuel.

AHEAD OF ITS TIME How did this California company develop revolutionary products that even the big lubrication companies don’t have? The original founders had spent decades developing lubrication solutions for the most demanding engine conditions known to man – racing. The late Elton Alderman, born and raised in Florida, grew up racing cars in Daytona Beach, and owned the International Hot Rod Association. Tim Wagner, a competitive water-skier, was a strategic part of the Proctor Gamble’s U-8 Tide hydroplane racing. When products have to perform under those conditions, it’s not a stretch to modify them for your average diesel or gasoline inboard or outboard engines. “I have been around boats of every shape and size all my life, and I have torn apart more engines than I can count,” said Tim Wagner, President of ProOne. “I know that boat owners will see their running costs come down, fuel consumption will improve dramatically, oil will stay cleaner longer, and they will avoid costly repairs keeping their boats on the water instead of in the shop.” Fore more information visit www.pro1industrial.com or call (714) 327-0262

The Lateral Line A Fish’s Super Sense By John Saporito

S

ensory perception in the sea is much different than it is on land. Although senses like vision, hearing and smell all function beneath the water’s surface, the transition between mediums influences how organs receive stimulus input. Still, just like on land, sensory systems are all tools in the arsenal of predatory creatures that live underwater. A gamefish may use any and all of these systems at a given time to achieve its purpose, but different species rely more heavily on certain senses than they do on others. Many species rely on a less familiar but equally formidable system designed to capitalize on the peculiar nature of water itself. The extremely high density and correspondingly low compressibility of water, rather than hinder the sensory perception of gamefish, has allowed for the development of mechanisms that can better exploit these qualities. In addition to the five senses familiar to us—hearing, sight, smell, taste and touch— fish have a sixth sense: they can feel sound. This ability, made possible by a network

of sensory organs known as the lateral line, enables fish to find and determine the source of a commotion as it is transmitted through the water. Often visible as a single horizontal stripe on each side of a fish’s body, lateral lines are fluid-filled canals that contain an intricate system of mechanoreceptors. The lateral line system detects vibrations, pressure changes, and movement in the surrounding water. Sounds that originate from afar are likely to be collected by the fish’s inner ear, which can be thought of as the more prototypical of the hearing systems. Sounds that are sourced near the fish, however, can be perceived by the lateral line with incredible accuracy. Lateral lines are akin to a second set of eyes; a fish can passively and continuously stay informed of all activity in its vicinity, allowing it to sense danger and locate prey without seeing it. The lateral line is especially adept at locating and distinguishing low-frequency sounds—sounds that might go unnoticed by normal auditory receptors. These include some notably faint marine disturbances, such

as those generated by the pulsation of another fish’s tail. The specialized nerves of the lateral line are tuned to ignore aquatic vibrations caused by the host fish’s own movements, forwarding only signals of interest to its brain to be analyzed and eliminating confusion during times of heightened exertion, as when hunting or evading larger predators. Lateral lines are present to some extent in all fish, although the degree of sensitivity varies among species. Some of the most sought-after gamefish boast strikingly advanced lateral lines. Many species, largely due to this adaptation, are inclined to feed more voraciously at night. To them, the darkness is an asset, not a handicap. And, because a shrewd hunter must always remain vigilant, this sensory arrangement helps keep gamefish safe as they face the pitfalls of life underwater. John Saporito is a lifelong fisherman and student of the seas. Visit him online at www.guerillaangling.com.

FROM OUR FARM TO YOU

If you travel north-west from Charleston, across the vast Carolina Coastal Plains, you’ll find rolling hills that suddenly rise over 100 feet out of the sandy bottomlands. This is the old coastline from the Crustaceous period over 65 million years ago. This geographical formation is known locally as “The Ridge” that stretches from Columbia, SC to Augusta, GA. And for over 100 years, the Watson family has farmed a piece of it, and called it home. It is that mindset that led the Watsons to become one of the first USDA Certified Organic farms in South Carolina, and one of the first farms to grow SC’s newest crop, hemp. For the past two years they have researched, studied, and harvested certified organic hemp in an effort to create the highest quality CBD oil in the US. That premium oil is the backbone of our brand, Indigo Ridge Hemp. To create the highest quality CBD oil in the market, we started with field and genetics research. After growing and harvest, the hemp flower is extracted using the purest form of extraction available. Unlike cheaper extraction methods, Supercritical CO2 extraction is a solvent-less extraction method that allows all the beneficial oils to be captured and bottled. These oils are CBD, other minor cannabinoids, and natural terpenes, all working together to enhance CBD’s effect on the human body. Mother nature has given us this amazing gift and we do everything we can to preserve that. The medicine within the hemp plant is truly a miracle. It helps so many of our customers get a better night sleep, deal with arthritis or just to simply relax. We did not jump into the hemp business for a quick buck, we got into the business because we believed in the hemp plant and wanted to share that with our community, our region and with the world.

FLY ANGLER LANDS

RECORD PERMIT

F

lorida fly fisher Kathryn Vallilee caught a massive 21-pound Key West permit on 6-pound tippet March 22. The catch, when approved by IGFA, is expected to crush the existing 21-year-old line-class world record by more than 11 pounds. “The fight for me was so tense because I knew this fish was the one,” Vallilee, who was

fishing with Capt. Brandon Cyr, told USA Today’s For The Win Outdoors. “And I think my focus on fighting it was what makes that memory so vivid. When Brandon got the fish in the net, I just felt a wave of relief wash over me.” Vallilee is no stranger to the record books. She co-owns a Key West fly shop with her husband and already holds the 4-pound line

class record. With Capt. Cyr, she has been chasing the 6-pound record all year. She and Cyr spotted three large permit as shadows over the white sand flats on March 22. She sight casted to them with a Skok’s Strong Arm Merkin fly, and the fish took. The previous record of 9 pounds, 12 ounces has stood since 1999.

ANGLER CATCHES RARE GOLDEN CRAPPIE

A

lucky angler reeled in an unusual catch on Virginia’s Buggs Island Lake. On Easter Sunday, David Rathburn couldn’t believe the golden fish at the end of his line. Rathburn had already caught 15 crappie that afternoon fishing a Kalin grub on a 1/8-ounce jig head. “I have been fishing Buggs Island Lake for 50 years, and I always target crappie in the spring,” said Rathburn. He said that day the fish were holding off bridge abutments and were suspended midway in the water column in about 15 feet of water. Soon he came tight to another fish off the abutment. The water was fairly clear, and when the fish got to within 3 feet of the surface he saw the colors. With a gold flash, the most unusual crappie he had ever seen was on the surface in front of him. “What in the world is that?” Rathburn recalled thinking. “I was shocked because I didn’t think it could possibly be a crappie.” Rathburn had caught the fish of a lifetime, a golden crappie. Dan Michaelson, a Virginia fisheries biologist, was surprised about Rathburn’s catch. The fish’s color is the result of a rare genetic mutation. “While this unique golden color isn’t unheard of in crappie, it certainly isn’t common. Consider also that as a fish matures they do everything in their power to avoid being eaten,” said Michaelson. “Often cryptic coloration or camouflage is a fish’s first line of defense against a predator and being a bright, gold color doesn’t lend itself well to a long life.”

Better Performance Through Innovation

N

ew Zealanders, almost as a whole, have a deep affinity with the ocean. View the world from a certain angle and you will see a small country completely surrounded and isolated by a vast ocean. Our ancestors have faced long, perilous sea voyages to reach New Zealand. Both Pakeha and MÄ ori have brought with them legends and stories of the ocean which have become part of our very make-up and part of our culture. The sea is our protector, our provider and our playground. We are the finest sailors in the world and prove it at any major international

regatta. We are also the best naval architects and boat builders (ask any sailor competing in those regattas). New Zealanders are fanatical about boating and spend a great deal of time on and in the water in a wide variety of craft. It is within this context that Oceanmax was founded. A company dedicated to discovering and developing high performance products which make marine craft more efficient and more economical. Our chemists are pioneering ways to ensure that our products do the least harm to both humans and our precious marine environment. We are a professionally

run organisation who value our customers and strive to earn their trust through outstanding service as well as products. Oceanmax is the innovative manufacturer and distributor of Propspeed, which is recognised globally as the best prevention of marine growth and fouling of props and running gear below the waterline. Propspeed has become a phenomenon around the world in the marine industry as the most innovative and effective marine foul release system. To learn more, visit www. propspeed.com.
