tretching 500 miles across the northern side of the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico, the Puerto Rico Trench is the deepest in the Atlantic Ocean. This 6-mile-deep feature is part of what makes the Virgin Islands one of the world’s best sportfishing destinations. Here, where the Atlantic Ocean borders the clear waters of the Caribbean Sea, the Virgin Islands rise as the peaks of an enormous underwater mountain chain. The islands offer some of the best diving, snorkeling and most beautiful beaches anywhere, but it is off these islands that serious anglers come to play. Beneath the surface, the topography is spectacular. About 20 miles north of St. Thomas, the travel hub of the U.S. Virgin Islands, the North Drop falls precipitously to depths of more than 28,000 feet into the Puerto Rico Trench. Cool Atlantic currents are stirred off Virgin Gorda, and sea life abounds. The big pelagic species congregate to feed on an abundance of baitfish drawn by the drop. A similar situation occurs off the South Drop, just 8 miles south of St. Thomas, and the smaller drops around St. Croix. Short boat rides put anglers on abundant baitfish and the bigger fish that feed on them. Marlin can be caught year-round, but spring to fall is peak time for blue marlin, which show up in numbers and feed aggressively around the full moons. The bite is legendary. The IGFA Women’s alltackle world record, a 1,073-pound blue marlin, was caught off the Virgin Islands, along with 24 other world records over the years. The granders—1,000-pound-plus marlin—show up on occasion, but the Virgin Islands also offer numbers. During the USVI Open/Atlantic Blue Marlin Tournament, 207 blue marlin were released over four days of fishing. Marlin average about 350 pounds out of St. Thomas, and 500-pounders are caught regularly. But blues aren’t the only game in town. The location of these islands 6

almost seems strategic. Sailfish, white marlin, tuna, wahoo, dolphin… the most sought after gamefish for sport and the table frequent these drops in good numbers to feed. Working the drop by trolling rigs across the depth contours produces consistently good action year-round. The sailfish bite peaks October through March. Yellowfin tuna are present late summer through winter, and blackfin and skipjack tuna provide

action year-round. Wahoo are also a year-round target, and dolphin fishing peaks in fall. The fishing is world class, and the Virgin Islands are also easy to get to. A short plane ride from the continental U.S. puts anglers in the middle of the action. And with lodging that ranges from quaint to luxurious, there are options for anyone who wants to live out their offshore fantasy. To learn more about the Puerto Rico Trench, go to

he numbers don’t lie. Guatemala’s Pacific coast is the most productive sailfish destination in the world. Days of double-digit releases would be considered spectacular anywhere. Off Guatemala, it’s just an average day. Annual release rates show a dozen sailfish per boat, per day. And that’s just a year-round average. It is not unusual during peak seasons for boats to raise more than 50 or 60 sails a day, sometimes a lot more. In March of 2006, Capt. Ron Hamlin, and the anglers on the Captain Hook, released 124 sailfish in a single day less than 15 miles off Guatemala. The legendary former skipper out of Casa Vieja Lodge in Puerto San Jose still holds the record. For conventional anglers, it’s pretty much a sure thing. For fly anglers, it’s the best odds you’ll find. The concentrations of sailfish in this small slice of the Pacific are astounding. But it’s not just sails. Natural factors such as dramatically shifting currents, temperature barriers and high oxygen levels close to the surface combine to hold baitfish year-round. The eddy formations that swirl off the Guatemalan coast are crowded with life, including the big pelagics and the fish they feed on. There are more Pacific sailfish than can be found anywhere, but there are also marlin, wahoo, slammer Dorado and yellowfin tuna. Casa Vieja Lodge says blue marlin in the 200- to 400-pound range are thickest April through July, with black marlin up to 400 pounds showing up December through March and smaller striped marlin November through January. On average, every Casa Vieja boat encounters marlin every three days while targeting sailfish. During peak billfish seasons of December through March and then again from May through July, grand slams are an everyday possibility. Boats fish anywhere from 2 to 50 miles out in an area renowned for flat seas. The most consistently productive area is a canyon known as “The Pocket.” Only about 40 nautical miles wide, The Pocket drops to depths of 3,500 to 4,000 feet. Those constantly shifting currents deflect off the walls of the pocket stirring up nutrient rich waters that attract bait and big gamefish. Casa Vieja takes the fishing very seriously. Guided by some of the world’s top-tagging and award winning captains, their fleet of classically maintained 35’ Contenders and 40’ Sportfishers consistently produces world-class results. They are inheritors of history. A majority of the

captains and lodge staff were employees of the original Fins ’n Feathers Inn that launched the Guatemalan sportfishing industry. These are the same sportsmen who have cared for the fishery since it exploded onto the sportfishing scene in the 1990s. With total release using circle hooks, the conservation philosophy has been central to Casa Vieja’s operations for more than a decade. With this kind of stewardship, as well as emphasis from the Guatemalan Government on limiting commercial fishing, the fishery continues to thrive. The lodge was also designed by lifelong sportsmen who know it is best to recover from a non-stop day of action on the water in worldclass accommodations. Luxurious rooms and top-notch local cuisine are paired with a staff trained to fill the needs of discerning travelers. It’s the perfect place to relive the day’s catch or dream of the morning’s possibilities. For more information on fishing Guatemala and the Casa Vieja Lodge, go to www.casaviejalodge.com.

our Rip Roller is tearing up the water as you retrieve it in short quick jerks. Suddenly the water explodes from the vicious strike of a peacock bass. In your excitement and shock, you instinctively jerk your rod up before the peacock has had a chance to get the hook firmly in his mouth, and 6 inches of lure and three massive treble hooks come flying past your head. Your first encounter with the huge peacock bass of Brazil’s Amazon will be one you never forget. Fishing for this massive, hard-fighting predator can be best described to anglers as hooking into a 20-pound smallmouth bass that is having a bad day. To top off this fishing adventure, you are fishing over 1,000 miles from the ocean in the heart of the world’s largest rain forest on black water rivers that are home to more than 2,500 species of fish and the world’s greatest diversity of flora and fauna. Anglers will catch four or five different species of peacock bass, ranging from the popoca and butterfly species weighing an average of 3 to 5 pounds to the massive paca or arzu, the current world record of which is a 29-pounder caught by Andrea Zaccherini in 2010. Anglers can also catch aerobatic arowana, several species of catfish weighing upwards of 200 pounds, wolf fish and myriad other species. Peacocks will readily hit topwater baits on waters that aren’t heavily pressured, the most famous being the big propeller driven Woodchopper and its clones, as well as the more subtle Spook type baits. As with most species of fish, subsurface jerkbaits and jigs will produce bigger numbers of fish caught than topwater lures. Fly fishermen have discovered this game

hey call Islamorada the Sportfishing Capital of the World. This slim string of six small islands about halfway down the Florida Keys separates the Atlantic from the Gulf of Mexico, and just offshore in the Atlantic, warm blue currents of the Gulf Stream deliver a steady flow of baitfish and the big migrating pelagic species that feed on them. The Continental Shelf is a highway for swordfish that move through in depths of 1,400 to 1,900 feet with a consistency that may be unmatched anywhere in the world. It is possible to target these deepwater giants any month of the year off Islamorada, and even during the day. But it is sportfishing only for hardcore anglers. Swordfish are elusive anywhere, the most difficult of the billfish to catch, and fights lasting several hours are the reward for tempting a bite from 150- to 400-pound or larger fish deep in the abyss. If catching a swordfish is one of the boxes that remains to be checked off on your bucket list, you’d be hard pressed to find a better place to do it. A little closer in, where the Gulf Stream swings over broken bottom and the offshore humps Islamorada has become famous for, it creates rips where disoriented baitfish become easy prey for dolphin, wahoo, sailfish, kingfish and tuna. In the summer months, flocks of birds are a dead giveaway for dolphinfish pushing frenzied bait to the surface. When that’s not going on, fish can be found trolling feather or jet head lures and plugs. A bite while trolling means it’s time to slow down and cast baits to catch other fish drawn to the same area. Sometimes this is met with spectacular results, especially for mahi, which tend to gather in numbers. Some of the most spectacular action on the humps comes from blackfin tuna. It can show up in spurts any time of year, but fall typically brings a push of 10-pound-plus tuna that can be incited into surface-feeding frenzies. Chumming up blackfins with pilchards is a very visual experience that allows even anglers armed with fly rods to hook up with multiple hard-fighting fish.

NOVEMBER 2016

As the tuna move toward the reefs with the late fall and winter baitfish migrations, the bigger fish begin to show up, and kite fishing becomes one of the preferred methods for teasing up fish 20 pounds and larger. The other fish that shows up to take advantage of baitfish from November through the winter is sailfish. There’s a reason why Islamorada is home to so many sailfish tournaments during the winter months. It can seem like everyone drops everything they’re doing for a chance to fly release flags. In fall and winter, sails move in to gorge on abundant ballyhoo around the reefs. This can present opportunities to anglers less than 5 miles from the docks off the islands of Islamorada. The 130- to 200-foot depths produce the most consistent bite where strong currents and changes in water color to a deep royal blue give away the edges and rips where sailfish hunt. Trolling or kite fishing the reefs can produce numerous fish in the 60-pound range when the bite is on. But on sunny days when the weather cooperates, it is possible to sight fish for sailfish inside the reefs in water as shallow as 20 or 30 feet. Even smaller boats can get in on this action. From the tower, crewmembers seek out the fish. When the alarm goes out, chum and baits are deployed. There’s really no technique more exciting. Anglers in the know await those bluebird skies on winter days when seeking out sailfish becomes as much hunting as it is fishing. And if all the offshore action isn’t enough to convince any angler to start making plans right now, fall also brings some of the biggest bonefish of the year to the Islamorada flats. Time it right, and you can be fishing the flats in the morning and trolling the bluewater in the afternoon. What more could you ask for?

THE ONLY DURABLE HIGH QUALITY ROD WRAP

Russ Lane: Bassmaster Elite Series™ Pro

“Winn overwraps help me as a tournament angler in so many ways. They’re great in all weather conditions. I don’t have to physically squeeze my rod during a cast as hard as I did with cork or EVA. That gives me a better degree of accuracy with less fatigue. Multiple color options also allow me to organize different rod actions and lengths using different colors. I honestly could never use a rod again without my Winn overwrap!”

By Mike Pehanich

I

believe this is the Golden Age of fishing tackle. For my money, the amazing quality and range of rods available to us today is clear evidence of that claim. Improvements in graphite quality, skeletal reel seats and lightweight braid-resistant guides have paved a path to conspicuous performance benefits, and rods conscientiously tailored to nearly every angling task are helping anglers execute specific techniques with a flourish. Yet, until recently, the seat of angler control—the handle—seemed stuck in the Dark Ages. Cork, a survivor from a bygone era, seemed like it would dominate rod handles forever, with EVA foam the only alternative material allowed any territorial claim. But progress has come, finally, to the rod handle. In recent years, alternative rod grip materials have hit the market including carbon fiber, a slick lightweight option; tough Kevlar tubing; composite cork, a denser and more durable cork-based material blend; and Syncork, a light and durable material with a rough-hewn appearance. Some have used shrinkwrap to give EVA foam a different look and feel, too. Color and design options have emerged, with even a “camo cork” available

now to rod builders. One of the biggest breakthroughs may have come two years ago when Winn Grips (www.winngrips.com), the Huntington Beach, California-based maker of grips for sports equipment, introduced its interchangeable grip system and rolled out a full line of handsomely designed rod grips made from its patented WinnDry material, which maintains its tacky feel in wet conditions and weather extremes. Early Winn prototypes were colorful and interesting, and they provided a hint of the performance benefits of ergonomic comfort and angler control that has come to characterize the grips today. Yet some thought early designs too similar to the golf grips that have made Winn a global leader in that field. Winn’s founder, aerospace engineering pioneer Dr. Ben Huang, took angler feedback to heart. Winn’s grip system has evolved into a versatile line of rod handle components. Rod makers, from leading brands to custom builders, have caught on quickly to the advantages of the grips. At ICAST 2016 in Orlando, Lew’s Fishing Tackle captured three Best of Show awards for products featuring Winn’s advanced polymer materials in rod handles and reel knobs. Lew’s, Kistler, Denali and others displayed new rod lines with Winn grips. Winn has introduced an element of “fashion” to fishing rods, too, by offering a broad range of bold colors and multi-colored and sometimes multi-textured designs that can complement tournament jerseys, boat colors and wraps, or represent a signature look or the colors of a favorite sports team. Winn’s quieter contribution to today’s tackle evolution could come in the emerging practice of “retrofitting” favorite old rods with Winn rod grips and in routinely fitting cork and EVA rod handles with a Winn “skin” in the form of Winn Superior Rod Wrap, a tape-like overwrap.

Center s SPEARFISHING TRAVEL

SHERI DAYE

A

s spearfishing continues to grow and capture people’s interest, so has the amount of travel related to spearfishing. The allure of exotic locations, different species, and the possibility of world records has spawned a new breed of traveler, and resorts and charters are happy to cater to this crowd. In Florida, there are live-aboard charters that take scuba divers to fertile grounds out of the lower Keys into the Gulf or the Dry Tortugas – such as Seaclusive Charters. There are also charters that cater to smaller groups of freediving spearfishers such as Killshot, Into the Blue, and more. The Keys are especially attractive to vacationers, as the scenery above the water can be just as interesting as below. In the Bahamas, resorts with marinas are well-equipped to handle divers, some of them weekend warriors coming by boat from Florida. The clear waters and beautiful marine life are a big draw. Bahamian law requires freediving-only and the use of either slings or polespears for spearfishing. Rather than being a deterrent, it’s created a new breed of divers who enjoy this simple and primitive form of hunting. The ability to add cracked conch or a lobster tail to a meal is a big bonus. Both coasts of the United States have a number of spearfishing charters to choose from as well. Divers can enjoy a change of scenery and try their luck at hunting white sea bass in the kelps of California, cobias off the rigs of Louisiana, stripers in the waters off Rhode Island, African Pompanos off the wrecks of Hatteras – all exciting catches. International travel has increased significantly in the past few years. Mexico, Panama, and Costa Rica are a big draw with desirable species such as Cubera Snappers, cobias, and tunas – depending on which coast. Fiji, Tahiti, Tonga, and Ascension Island have been yielding world record wahoos and tunas, drawing the more hard-core divers. Here’s some quick tips to make sure your travel is fun, safe, and productive: 1. Go with friends and watch out for each other - in the water and out.

2. Choose a reputable charter that specializes in spearing and ask the captain about fish and conditions. Make sure your skill level is up to par for that location. 3. Make sure you are properly equipped for the fish you are targeting and follow the law. Be aware of the local fishing regulations and limits. 4. Use a Sportube to pack your spearguns and use the wetsuits for padding. Tell TSA you have “fishing equipment” rather than using the word “speargun”. 5. Buy DAN insurance – they are a reputable agency known for covering divers, including evacuation services. For divers in search of adventure, traveling to different hunting grounds can yield the trip (and fish) of a lifetime. Life is short, so get out and enjoy it! DOUBLE BARREL POPPER

For anglers who enjoy pursuing bass on the fly and for the anglers that have interest in fly fishing for bass, now is the time to get on the water. Cooler nights and slightly shorter days bring a nice drop in water temps that often triggers bass into aggressive feeding patterns to beef up for winter. The result is some exciting topwater activity. Armed with poppers, I love to row anglers down local rivers armed with 6 weights and poppers targeting bankside structure for spotted bass. Takes are often aggressive followed with a nice acrobatic battle to the boat. I have been filling my popper box with the new Double Barrel Popper heads from Flymen Fishing Company. They generate loud glugs and can also be used in a number of creative ways to create your own desired style of topwater fishing. Hook: Thread: Eyes: Tail: Body:

re you a bass guy? Ever caught a 51-pounder or, for that matter, any over 10 pounds? Very few folks have. I’ve been promoting a new horizon for the bass angler: inshore saltwater. Permit me to highlight the magnificent redfish, and point you to three places where you can get it done. First let’s talk about the fish and what to expect. The guy is dumb as a rock. He can be spooked and still will bite, is always hungry, is a survivor, grows rapidly, eats plastics, spinnerbaits, crankbaits, can be spotted in the shallows and finally, is a fabulous table fish. My largest is 51-pounds. I was fishing in the Banana River near Cocoa Beach, Fla. and saw this giant in about 2 feet of water. I cast a small curly tail jig on 12-pound test line and he took it. After the hook set, the fish swam past the boat and my

ach year before the bass tournament season starts, I practice new techniques and tune-up the ones I’ve mastered. Whether it is electronics, skipping jigs, fishing ledges, etc., you have to practice to get better. One night before going to the lake for some practice, I decided to work on time management. Time is something that always costs me in tournaments. I’ve realized that time was not my enemy, how I managed it was. Tournament anglers have eight hours to catch five good fish by 3 p.m. I started with the basics. I broke it down by allocating one hour for travel from spot to spot and to get back for the weigh in. That left seven hours of fishing. During map study, I found seven spots I could fish for an hour each. Believe it or not, that’s a lot of time to fish one area. I decided that if I got bit at any time, I might need to adjust my time-management plan on the water, but at least I had a plan. A mistake I see many anglers make is staying too long in one area. Bass are opportunistic, and if they are ready to eat, they are going to eat. If I have not gotten bit in a certain amount of time, I will do one of several things: change baits, change colors, change locations and, many times, change speed. Focusing on time management, I have found that discipline and staying focused is a key part of the game.

My plan started out just as planned. I fished the first spot for an hour, and then ran to the next and fished it for an hour. When I got to my third spot, I started getting bites. So when the time came to leave, I simply stayed at that spot for 15 minutes longer, which meant I only had 45 minutes at one of my other areas. I was looking for a pattern. If it was determined the fish were only halfway back in the coves, I could concentrate only on those areas where I was getting bites and save time. I could now expand my fishing areas and places to fish, staying on each spot for maybe 30 minutes. Now, instead of having only seven spots to fish, I could get to 11 or 12 spots in a day and still be back on time. Time is something we cannot make more of, but it is something that can be managed. I recommend tournament anglers who struggle with time management buy a baker’s timer, set it for however long you want to be on each spot, and stick to moving each time it goes off. For me, timing my areas allows me to be more efficient all the way down to how I cover a certain area and to the rotation of baits I’m using. Stop blaming time and start managing it better. Local Rivers & Fly Fishing TROUT FISHING AND DROUGHT CONDITIONS Contributed By: Jimmy Harris

www.unicoioutfitters.com

We get lots of questions regarding our fall trout fishing season and how the long summer drought will affect it. Anglers are particularly interested in the Georgia Delayed Harvest streams which are stocked during the first few days of November. Well, here’s some good news! Thanks to Georgia’s DNR and the USFS federal hatchery managers, an amazing number of fish survived and grew to a catchable size for stocking the DH waters this fall. DNR’s Buford Hatchery in particular is a tremendous cold water sanctuary during times when even mountain streams are running low and warm. Statewide, DNR says their fingerling supplies are tight right now, but they still expect to have at least 1,000,000 catchable size fish ready for the 2017 season. They’ll have a more firm handle on this number by the time January rolls around. A lot of these fish are coming off antibiotics right now as a result of the less than optimum

water conditions in some of the hatcheries this summer, so the hatchery personnel won’t mess with them while they’re under that stress. Jeff Durniak, North Georgia Region Fisheries Supervisor, explained it this way, “Having this many surviving fish, with extremely low flows and water temps over 70 in the two mountain hatcheries, is amazing in my book! Thanks to skilled and dedicated state and federal hatchery managers, we should have enough surviving adult fish to enjoy a good fall DH season.” So there you are. After almost four months of wishing you were trout fishing in the mountains, the time is upon us and the outlook is good. There’s even a silver lining to low water. When water flows are consistent, even if they’re low, there will be a higher recruitment rate on brown and brook trout redds. And that bodes well for the future wild trout populations in Georgia. Mother Nature, you got to love her!

Delayed Harvest Time in Georgia

Contributed by James Bradley Our much anticipated Delayed Harvest (DH) season is finally here! Georgia’s DH season begins November 1st, and continues through May 14th. The DH sections of these waters are usually heavily marked with signage. Anglers fishing DH waters must release all trout immediately, and use and possess only artificial lures with one single hook per lure. This means no nature bait, no scented bait and no treble hooks as used on many spinning lures. See the Georgia Fishing Regulation for complete information about these waters and their rules. The downside to Georgia’s DH program is there are only five waters currently being used as such. These waters are Amicalola Creek, Chattahoochee River, Chattooga River, Smith Creek and the Toccoa River. They are stocked heavily with trout. I mean hundreds and hundreds of trout are planted for an angler’s enjoyment. Sometimes, it can be like catching fish from a barrel. I’m still hopeful that Georgia will see the value in the DH waters and continue to add more of them in the near future. North Carolina has well over 30 streams listed in their DH program. I can only imagine what the trout fishing would be like with this number of streams in Georgia! Early in the DH season, these fish will be in pods after stocking has taken place. It is not unheard of to catch 10 even 20 fish from one large pod. These pods will slowly disappear as the fish move and spread out more. A week or two into the season and you can begin catching them in feeding lanes and other normal holding areas. There is no denying that freshly stocked trout will devour about anything, especially bright, flashy colored flies. A simple setup to search the water with is a standard dry/nymph rig. Tie a 12” to 24” piece of tippet off the bend of the dry fly hook and then place a nymph or junk fly at the end. This rig allows you to use the dry as a surface fly as well as an indicator, and the nymph being a subsurface fly where trout feed about ninety percent of the time anyways. Dries can be Stimulators, Caddis, Mayflies and so on in sizes 10-14. Droppers (or nymphs) can be a Hares Ear, Pheasant Tail, Prince and so on

in sizes 14-16. DH fish do not mind chasing streamers or Wooly Buggers in sizes 8-12 that are stripped across current, or giving a reaction strike to other items like San Juan Worms, Squirmy Worms or other junk flies like colored eggs or Y2Ks, etc. Stockers don’t stay uneducated for too long as anglers begin pounding them. As the season rolls on, it may be necessary to tie on the traditional flies, and it will not hurt to have some smaller patterns like Rainbow Warriors or Midges in sizes 18-22. If big water is intimidating to you, or if the Toccoa River DH section is too rough for you to wade, we run float trips on the upper Toccoa including the DH section. This allows you to cover a lot more water than trying to wade fish. A couple of other unique things I’ll mention about this month. The brown trout have moved upstream to begin their spawning season. This is the time to get out on some of the smaller streams and see if you can hook up with a nice one. Wild browns will be colored up beautifully this time of year. A drawback this time of year is the leaves will be falling into the streams which can hinder your presentation. Remember that twitching your surface fly will help it stand out from the leaves that may be present on the water. Up here in the mountains, the fall leaf colors are sometimes amazing which can be worth the trip itself if you time it just right! Reel ‘Em In Guide Service is based out of beautiful Ellijay, Georgia. They have been offering their services to fly anglers since 2001. They hold a Special Use Permit for Guiding on the Chattahoochee National Forest, have licensed guides for North Carolina, offer over 7 miles of private trophy waters across Georgia, and they offer drift boat trips on the Toccoa River and the Tuckasegee River in NC. Give Us a Call. We’ll Hook You Up!

November is a great time to be on the Chattahoochee. All the hardcore deer hunters are off the river dedicated to the woods and many other anglers think the trout season is over. Brown trout begin to stage at spawning sites in October, and November is their peak for spawning and egg laying. During this time larger brood browns will be very aggressive even during daylight hours. This aggravated behavior is probably sexual frustration and territorial instincts to carry on their genetic pool. Regardless, this is a great time to have the river to yourself and to catch some better than average bruiser browns. Streamers and larger nymphs fished in the murky water during typical inclement fall weather is ideal. Good luck and tight lines!

November is that time of year when the trout streams are smoking because the fishing is so hot! North Georgia and Western North Carolina mountain creeks are alive with the sounds of screaming fly reels and splashing trout. Most of the fly hatches are starting to wane with just a few Blue Winged Olive Mayflies and small Grey Midges hanging around on select days. Have no fear though; nymphs, buggers, soft hackles, and various junk food will hold us over until the first sunny days of March when the big bugs start flying again. The Toccoa River tail water near Blue Ridge, Georgia is finishing up its nasty lake turnover and returning to its semi normal self. Also, the Delayed Harvest starts on the headwaters of the Toccoa at Sandy Bottoms Canoe Launch on November 1st. There’s a good mile and a half here to fish with good access along Dial Road. The wading can be a little tricky with lots of shelf rock but it’s well worth it with the water flow below 300 cfs, but just be careful. Junk food patterns such as Eggs, San Juan Worms, and Squirmy Worms will work great along with standard nymph patterns and good old Wooly Buggers in size 10, 12, and 14. The Delayed Harvest streams in the forgotten far west of North Carolina such as Fires Creek and Big Snowbird Creek are rocking right now! Two huge stockings of big beautiful hungry trout have been planted in these two amazingly scenic streams by the second week of November. Both are just a couple of hours north of Atlanta or west of Asheville and are well worth the drive from anywhere. The fish will take bushy dry flies such as Elk Hair Caddis and Black or Orange Stimulators on warmer days. To be super effective though, a size 14 or 16 Pheasant Tail or Hares Ear Nymph swung under one of those dries on some 5x fluorocarbon will keep you

P

1 busy with the landing net. Better yet, take a fishing buddy and let him hold the net for you! If the water is up and you want to fish nymphs, double rigging with a Y2K Bug with a size 14 Prince Nymph dropper is murder on these guys. Fishing barbless is recommended to reduce the chance of harming these fish as much as possible. We guide on all of these three awesome pieces of trout water and I can’t think of a better place to take a beginning fly fisher to get a little stream cred under his or her wading belt. Give us a call at Southern Highroads Outfitters Fly Shop here in Blairsville, GA. at 706-781-1414 or stop by on your way to the river. We’d be glad to give you the latest information on fishing here in the mountains or to take you on the guided trip of a lifetime!

Chattooga River Fly Shop by Karl Ekberg www.chattoogariverflyshop.com 864-6382806 The cooler autumn air has now reached us here in the South. The leaves are changing to their fall splendid colors, the river levels are back up after well needed rains and the water temperatures now into the low 50’s. It must be November, with much excitement about Delayed Harvest starting here on the South Carolina rivers on November 1 continuing through May 14, next spring. The helicopter has flown many trips up and down the rivers, and the many thousands of fish are now abundant in the rivers. We want to thank the Walhalla Fish Hatchery, the Georgia Fisheries, and all of the folks who participated in the stocking program. This is a great time to get out there and be rewarded with catching some of these very large brook, brown, and rainbow trout which these fine folks have stocked. Just after the stocking has been completed and the fish are new to their river environment, you should have good success with the Carolina Peach, Wounded Sculpin, Count Chocula, Rice Krispy and Special K. Cast these streamers out and across, let them dead drift with a twitching motion throughout the drift, and then a strip and

pause technique at the end of the drift. Continue stripping these streamers all the way back to you, as the fish will chase them down, thinking they have a quick meal, but the reward is all yours. Also, dead drifting Pat’s Rubber Legs, UV2 Fuzzy Bug, Skipper Stones and Y2K’s will prove to be productive as well. As these fish adapt to their environment, they will start to understand to eat the natural bugs within the river system. We have a great fall Blue-Winged Olive hatch which happens, especially on cooler overcast days. Pre-hatch, dead-drifting emerger nymphs will be very productive. As you start to see dimples on the water surface of the fish starting to rise, fishing small emergers on a swing technique is key. As the hatch is happening, fishing the traditional dries is very productive. There is a great amount of fun catching these large fish on small dry flies. We hope to see everyone out on the rivers and we are open Tuesday thru Saturday 7am-5pm and on Sundays 7am-2pm. We have a large assortment of Christmas ideas including gift bags for the fly tiers, preset flies in fly boxes, local artisan’s works and gift certificates, and we can ship all items daily. Let us know how we can help you with a guided trip, holiday gift ideas or information, and be sure to enjoy a great day at the rivers.

Fishing Casts It’s small stream fishing season again and time to look at casts that catch fish. Although it’s cool to cast a long distance, we don’t get to do that when fishing most north Georgia streams. What we really need to focus on are casts that are with a purpose. For example, we don’t want to put our line on top of a fish when we cast upstream. Or maybe we need to get a streamer deep and swing it at the end of a pool. Maybe it’s just being able to cast a fly upstream when there are trees behind you. Being aware of what you’re doing to the fish is a big part of stalking, casting to and catching a fish. On small streams we are often limited by structure. Short, targeted casts like a reach cast are often the best bet. One application of a reach cast is to deliver the fly to the target and get the line off to the side of the fish and the drift. It’s also used to help get a drag free drift, but we will talk about that application next month. If we are casting to a fish directly upstream, a regular cast would put the line right on top of the fish. To counter that, make a normal back cast and then on the forward

Fly of the Month By Jake Darling

cast, launch the line off the rod tip as usual, and then sweep the rod tip/line off to the side. Kind of like drawing an ‘L’ with your rod tip. This will send the fly out to the target with the ‘fly leg’ of the loop and move the ‘rod leg’ of the loop to the side, out of the fly’s drift. Now put yourself in that same situation. With the trout upstream and now your back is against a cliff or trees. You can’t make a forward cast so you have to deliver the cast on your back cast. Sight your target, face away from it and make a cast away from the target. Remember that the trajectory on your ‘false cast’ (forward cast) is up, and then out over your target on the delivery cast (back cast). Make this a regular part of your casts, and it will become just as easy as your normal cast. You can combine these casts too. For example, use a back cast delivery with a reach mend at the end of it. Excellent cast that is fun to do and works great in certain situations. Check out the International Federation of Fly Fishers website for more information on fly fishing and join us.

Root Beer Midge Hook: #18 TMC 100 Bead: 5/64 Tungsten Copper Thread: UTC 70 Brown Underbody: UTC Tinsel, Brown Ribbing: DMC 3371 Embroidery Thread (one strand) A local favorite! An easy pattern to tie, and a proven pattern through the winter months. The Root Beer Midge is my go-to pattern when trout become very picky. This pattern is a killer on tailwaters, but also works well on our clear water freestone streams as well. Add some to the box this winter and watch your catch rate increase!

November Fly Fishing Report

Contributed By: Henry Cowen www.henrycowenflyfishing.com While it is possible to striper fish twelve months a year here in the Southeast, November is clearly one of the three best months of the year to fly fish on Lake Lanier as well as many of the North Georgia lakes. It is one of the few months that you can count on to see significant topwater action. While fishing can never be considered a “surething”, November fly fishing on our area impoundments is as close to a surething as one can get. The only problems you will face during November are the fronts moving through which can shut the fishery down for a day or two. Last November we had some epic topwater fishing, and I fully expect the same again this year. As the water temperature cools down to the mid-sixty degree and under for November, the striped bass start schooling all over the south end of the lake. There might even be fish seen further north, but your best bet will be on the south end to start. While fish can be seen feeding on the surface at any time of the day, it is a good bet that the first 2-3 hours after first light as well as the last 3 hours before sunset will be you most opportunistic times. Fish may still be feeding on 3-5” long blueback herring, but you can count on the fish gorging on 1-2” long threadfin shad. It is the small threadfin shad that have fly anglers excited about November fishing. Fly anglers have a specific edge in hooking fish at this time of year as they can match the hatch better than conventional anglers. Overcast days with light winds will see more epic surface feeding than sunny days. Best bet for fly fishers will be to carry two outfits rigged on the boat. First a floating line with a topwater fly tied on will work perfectly for topwater. A Crease Fly, Gurgler or any popper tied on a 1/0-2/0 hook will suffice. An alternative is to attach a Wiggle Minnow to the end of the tippet. If fishing a Wiggle Minnow, it is important to keep a continuous retrieve in motion. Stick the fly rod under your arm and use a hand over hand retrieve for fishing what may be considered the most fun fly to fish ever!

COASTALANGLERMAG.COM • THEANGLERMAG.COM

NOVEMBER_CURRENT_ATL.indd 7

For my second rod I would go with an intermediate line and a small Somethin’ Else fly attached to the end of it. The Somethin’ Else matches the small threadfin shad perfectly and will get you a few extra bites that other flies will not. My second choice on an intermediate line would be a small grey over white Clouser Minnow. Conventional anglers should rig up a small ¼ ounce bucktail on one rod and a popping cork with fly setup on another. A third option is to fish a small Crocodile Spoon. Matching the hatch is critical to getting bites when these fish are eating itty bitty baits. If the fish are on herring, then a swimbait, Zara Spook or pencil popper will work just fine. Keep a pair of binoculars at the helm to help locate the busting fish. By midmonth we will even see our terns and gulls back to help locate fish from a long way off. The fish will eventually migrate to the north end of the lake by month’s end. Burning gas is the ticket to finding fish. Try to plan your trips on or around both the new and full moon as this moon phase makes the topwater bite more epic. See you on the pond! Local Lakes & Forecasts WEST POINT

Forecast By: by Capt. Keith Hudson hudsonprobass@gmail.com 706-884-1483 Water temps are finally in the 60’s or low 70’s. The lake is clear, about 5 feet down and falling slowly. We need rain! Bass: Good - The shallow bite remains good now and will improve even more, especially if we get some rain and continued cooler temps. Baits such as unweighted Flukes, Senkos, buzzbaits and Rebel Pop-R’s are catching bass. Try to fish these baits in or near cover or around schools of shallow baitfish. Fish the open water in the pockets with a KVD 1.5 crankbait or an A-Rig. Also, it doesn’t hurt to have a jig handy to pitch around any shallow wood cover. It won’t produce a lot of bites, and you are going to lose some jigs, but it’s a good way to catch a bigger fish. By the end of the month (especially if it cools off quickly) the big schools of spots mixed with hybrids, white bass and stripers can be caught on jigging spoons and dropshot rigs on deeper offshore structures. Linesides: Good - The downline bite with shad or bass shiners has improved as the water has cooled off. Freelining a live bait will also work at times. Most of the fish seem to be holding 20 to 30 feet deep when they are not schooling on the surface and are still moving around a good bit. Expect the topwater fishing to continue to improve very early and very late or on overcast or rainy days as the water cools. Gulls and loons usually show up in November, which makes it easier to pinpoint schooling stripers. A popping cork rig has been working well on schooling 1 to 3

pound fish. A 3/8 or ½ ounce white Rooster Tail, a chrome C.C. Spoon and a number of other small shad imitators have also been producing. As the water cools, a bucktail jig becomes very effective as well. The mouths of most creeks south of the 109 bridge and the flats near the dam have been holding fish. Trolling with mid-depth crankbaits and Alabama Rigs has also been producing some linesides in these same areas. Crappie: Good - Try fishing the smallest minnows you can find or a 1/16 ounce or smaller jig around bridge pilings, brushpiles and blowdowns in 6 to 15 feet of water. Concentrate on trees and brush that are close to the old creek channels. Pitching or shooting docks with small tube or feather jigs around or under the docks is also a very good technique during fall. Cooler temps and some rain should improve the fishing even more. Yellow Jacket, Wolf and Whitewater Creeks are still producing some crappie.

Eric Welch Welch’s Guide Service www.welchsguideservice.com 706-455-2323 Water temperature: 76-78 degrees, lake level: 7 feet below full pool, water clarity: clear. We’ve still had a dry month with not much rain, but due to the cool nights and mornings, the water temps are dropping. The lake is already down 7 feet which is just a couple feet from winter pool. This means the fish are already schooling and staging on deep points. I’ve been targeting flats and shallow pockets first thing in the mornings. The topwater baits I’m using are Strike King Sexy Dawgs, Zara Spook, and Lucy Craft Gunfish. The bass have been scattered and suspended around these areas waiting on the baitfish to move in and out. This bite is only lasting 2 or 3 hours in the morning, but don’t put your topwater up cause these fish will be busting around all day. Once the sun gets up and the topwater bite slows, I’m targeting the suspending fish with a Fish Head Spin, Silver Buddy and 4.5” Strike King Sexy

Spoon. There is also a deeper bite going on also on steep bank lines and around docks. The baits I’m using for this bite is a dropshot with a 4.5” RoboWorm, Shaky Head with Zoom trick worm and a 3/8 ounce PB/J jig. This bite is only going to get better for the next couple months. So if you want to see some beautiful mountain scenery while catching some big mean spotted bass, give us a call.

Lake Allatoona Forecast By: Capt. Robert Eidson First Bite Guide Service 770-827-6282 eidson6260@att.net www.firstbiteguideservice.com The lineside bite is slow right now. The lake is starting to turn over and the fish are scattered from one end of the lake to the other, including the rivers. These fish are on the move and

From Atlanta Angler Magazine,

are hard to stay on top of once you do find them. If you are heading out, be sure to take your umbrella rigs. The trolling bite isn’t much better than the live bait bite, but it will catch you a few fish this time of year. I think we are getting just days away from a good bite. The water temperature is in the middle 70’s and good things are just around the corner.

Forecast by Shawn “Shadman” McNew Striper Soup Bait & Tackle Acworth GA/ 770-528-9601 Allatoona will be in drawdown, and according to the past few years, the lake will be dropping down to around 825 (15 feet below full) by the end of November. Striper and hybrid fishing is going to be tricky during this transitional time. The late heat wave in October put the water profile a couple weeks behind normal. The lake will be in the peak of turnover, and finding and catching linesides will be VERY difficult. You may consider other locations like Carter’s, Lanier, Weiss, or West Point. The best bites on the lake will be on the north end, in the Etowah River and around Little River. Live shad on downlines, flatlines and freelines will be your best bet

for action. Planer board fishing will be starting, so have a couple sets handy. The bite should be good throughout the day as long as weather patterns are stable. Staying with the larger concentrations of shad on the lake will keep you in the strike zone. Be patient because the fish won’t be feeding long when they decide to turn it on. Lure fishing and surface activity will be difficult. A small spoon jigged near the bottom on hard bottom flats will produce some fish, mostly white bass. Umbrella rigs will always raise an aggressive fish, so if the live bait isn’t working, keep a set of Captain Mack’s on board in case you want to drag them around. HINT: We are developing a new bait tank, so if you’re in the market for a tank for next spring, hold off until you see what we’ve got brewing!

Local Lakes & Forecasts lake lanier crappie Forecast By: Dan Saknini, Lanier Crappie Angler’s Club. www.laniercrappieanglers.net Fall is here, and crappie fishing is on the rise! After the above normal average temperatures over the last several weeks, water temperature is falling with the cooler nights and is currently about 75 degrees. If you’re fishing the Chattahoochee or the Chestatee, you will notice that the water temperature drops the further north you go. The lake has begun to turn over, and if you are fishing the northern part of the lake, you’ll notice the gas bubbles coming off the bottom. You’ll also notice that the bait is starting to move north. That being said, there are still a lot of fish holding in some areas on the south end of the lake, and fishing is good to excellent in Four

Mile Creek and Six Mile Creek. Standalone brush piles in twenty to thirty feet of water are producing best. Your Humminbird down scan and side scan electronics play a big part in finding fish. Some brush piles will hold a lot more fish than others. Soft body jigs and hair jigs are producing equally well, such as Bobby Garland jigs. If you prefer a hair jig, Jiffy Jigs are still my preference. The fish are holding tight to the brush, and you can expect to lose a few jigs in the trees, so always carry extras. We are still not catching the bigger fish, but if you are into fun fishing, you can get on them and catch a good number quickly. You may have to try six or eight brush piles, but when you find them, the fun is on! Don’t get discouraged, just keep moving until you find them. It’s always a good idea to have several spots in mind to try when you head out. Be safe on the water. Wear your life jacket as it can save your life.

Local Lakes & Forecasts lake lanier striperS Forecast by: Clay Cunningham www.catchingnotfishing.com 770-630-2673 It is hard to believe October is coming to a close and we’re now preparing for November. The stripers will continue to surface some in November. Keep the Redfin tied on for these surface fish. Also be sure to change out the hooks on the Redfin to 1/0 Gamakatsu Magic Eye Trebles. The factory hooks on the Redfin are worthless. As the surface tmeperature drops in November, look for the schoolers to get harder to catch. They will begin to eat smaller and smaller baits. Once they change to the smaller baits, throw a small 1/4 ounce Spro bucktail in white. Try the Spro bucktail with and without a trailer. The length of the bait can be very important to the bite. Another choice to throw is the Capt. Mack Ice Fly in white. It is a very small spoon that is usually cast under a casting bubble. This is a bait you will only find at the local shops like Hammonds, and Oakwood Bait

and Tackle. If you want to use live bait in November, you will want live trout and live herring. All you need is a 7 foot Shakespeare Striper Rod and a Penn Squall 20 reel spooled with fifteen pound Trilene Big Game line. Pull the trout behind a Water Bugz planer board at 1 mph in the areas where a large concentration of bait is present. The birds that arrive in November will help you find these thick concentrations of bait. If you are not seeing any action on the surface and the bait is close to the bottom, dig out the Berry Flex It Spoons. On Lanier, the most popular sizes are the .6 White Foil Flex It Spoon and the 1 ounce White Foil Flex It Spoon. Jig the spoon up and down on the bottom for the most bites in a yoyo type action. You will catch bass, stripers and walleyes. You can also use live bait on these deep fish. Tie up a downline with a 2 ounce Capt. Mack swivel sinker and a four foot leader of Trilene 100 % Flourocarbon tipped with a Gamakatsu 2/0 Octopus hook. This setup will see use all winter. I’m looking forward to a great November.

by Capt. Chad Smith smithsguideservice31@yahoo.com (706)207-2411 Well guys, the fall weather, cooler water temps, cooler days and great crappie fishing is soon upon us! We are catching a ton of fish quite a few different ways! Dock shooting is still producing some very good fish as well as pushing minnows over and around brush and ledges for your numbers and size. Vertical jigging over the same brush and ledges is catching some very good fish, and long line trolling is boating numbers, but size isn’t quite there yet! Minnows dropped right over the brush will typically catch your active fish real quick, but as soon as the bite stops I pull out the short rods and start probing around the brush slightly bouncing a tadpole/ straight tale jig trying to entice a crappie to eat! Long line trolling around the submerged standing timber running double 1/16th ounce jigs or a single 1/16th and a #4 split shot .9-1 mph at 10-12 feet deep are producing great numbers but not the size just yet! As we get into November, look for the fish to move off the ledges

Fishing With Buddies By Capt. Cefus McRae Nuts & Bolts Fishing Series

The next time you’re on the water, look around at the other boats out there and see how many only have one person on board. Not too many right? That’s because fishing is more fun when you have a buddy along. Having a buddy fishing with you makes the entire experience more fun, and it helps pass the time in between fish. Many days, my fishing buddy is Buck, The Wonder Dog. While he has a little difficulty tying knots (due to no opposing thumb), his companionship and antics when a drag starts singing earn him a spot on the Wide Open II every time. There are a multitude of good reasons to bring a buddy along. Some things are simply easier when you have two people; like launching/ loading your boat, hitching the trailer, landing a fish, carrying the cooler full of fish to the cleaning table and washing the boat down at the end of the day. However, the top reason on my list would be safety. When things go wrong on the water, they are

typically exponentially worse than if the same thing had happened on dry land. When you’re dealing with boating gremlins in a choppy ocean, having another set of hands, eyes or some extra brain power can resolve an issue before it becomes a major problem. Sometimes it’s simply impossible, or dangerous, to initiate a repair on your own; like tracing down a wire or removing fishing line from your propeller shaft. In virtually every instance having a buddy along with me provided the vital assistance that allowed us to get back to the dock safely. Having a buddy on board when you’re fishing brings some obvious benefits as well. If you’re fishing in unfamiliar waters or the bite is a little ‘off ’, then you can both fish different kinds of bait until you find what interests the fish and then switch to the same bait. If you’re planning to do some trolling, one person can man the helm while the other sets the trolling spread. When you have a big fish on the line, one

angler fights the fish and the other clears the lines or handles the boat. From an economic perspective, fishing has become a little more expensive these days. The cost of fuel for both the boat and the tow vehicle is a factor. Burning ten to fifteen gallons of gas per hour adds up when you have to travel 20 miles offshore or run 15 miles up the lake. There’s a buddy benefit here too. I’ve got a lot of fishing pals who don’t own a boat, and they are happy to pitch in for fuel, ice, bait, lunch, etc. So now the total expenses for a day’s fishing are spread out over several people, versus you footing the entire bill. There are also some socially redeeming benefits with a buddy on board. If you have kids, spending a day fishing is an excellent way to get in some quality bonding time and teach them things they cannot get from playing video games. My kids have been fishing since they could

walk, and I firmly believe their lives have been enriched through our onthe-water experiences together. I know mine has. I’d like to conclude with this thought. My grandfather was one of my best buddies growing up. He’s the one who really got me hooked on fishing. Those days with him are still some of my most favorite memories. It’s a shame in today’s high-tech, fast-paced world, we have become too busy to enjoy the simple things in life that make us happy, and bring us closer together. I’ve got a very simple remedy; gather the family or call a buddy, and just go fishing. Tight lines and calm seas.

Local Lakes & Forecasts Lake Lanier in November – Fish the Ditches Contributed By: Jim “Jimbo” Mathley www.jimboonlanier.com

Many anglers make the common mistake of underestimating the viability of late fall and winter fishing. While the outside elements are not always favorable, the months of November and December on Lake Lanier can offer anglers some of the best fishing of the year. I look for this year to be especially good given the low water levels on the lake. We should be over 8 feet below full pool heading into November this year. The notes below will help your late fall fishing during this special circumstance. Ditches: A ditch can be defined as a significant depression, typically narrow in width (2-10 feet), which offers a sharp depth change of 2 feet or more from the surrounding structure. These features exist in many places on Lake Lanier, and they hold fish during the late fall and winter months. Ditches can be found both shallow and deep, and can be approached in a number of different ways. This year, with the water being low, I look for these ditches to start holding bait much earlier than in a normal water-level year. Shallow Ditches: Oftentimes, if you find a shallow ditch (15 feet or less) in a creek, you will find baitfish present in and around this ditch. Bass will show up and feed in these areas, particularly in low-light conditions, even in the dead of winter. Slow-rolling a SuperSpin or slow cranking a crankbait in these areas at daylight is a great way to take some huge spots throughout the late fall and winter. Present a SPRO jerkbait over these same areas for bites as well. Cast your jerkbait long distances over the ditch, and work the bait back to the boat with a jerk, jerk, pause retrieve.

Include long pauses of up to 10 seconds between jerks. Also, ensure that you jerk the bait on slack line to improve the erratic action of the bait, which will trigger more strikes. The key to this technique is patience. Long pauses can be the key. Deep Ditches: Many of the same definitions and techniques will still apply to deeper ditches, but there are some key differences. When you search for these deeper ditches (25-50 feet deep), start by following the shallow ditches out to deeper water. Once you have moved to the deeper part of the ditch, use your Lowrance electronics to look for cover within or around the ditch that may offer an ambush spot for bass. If you can find an area with a ditch, standing timber, brush, and key feature changes such as an outside channel bend intersected by a road-bed in 40 feet of water or so, you have found the perfect winter haunts of the bait and our greenbacked friends. Good electronics,

such as Lowrance HDS units with 3D Structure Scan Technology, are vital to finding these subtle depth changes and cover. Once you find a location like this holding fish, start by dropping a jigging spoon down to the location of the fish. Allow the spoon to sink to the bottom and then reel it 2 cranks up before beginning your presentation. Jig the spoon with quick, short, upward thrusts of the rod and include pauses in your presentation. Let the fish tell you how they want the bait presented. Another option for these deep fish include a drop-shot rig. Rig a dropshot with a small worm or minnow imitation and present the bait in the area of the fish. Do not over-work the bait. Often, periods of no movement can trigger strikes. Steep Rock Banks/Rip Rap: These features consistently hold fish during the late fall and winter months. These “vertical” banks, present both in the creeks as well as the main lake, offer the fish the ability to change depths within the water column without traveling very far. Search for changes in the structure as your starting place. Look for points, pockets, contour

COASTALANGLERMAG.COM • THEANGLERMAG.COM

NOVEMBER_CURRENT_ATL.indd 15

changes, or transition areas where sand meets rock or clay, for example. Begin your prospecting in these areas with a SPRO jerkbait such as a McStick. Impart the jerk, jerk, pause retrieve mentioned previously, with a focus on long pauses. If the fish are not active enough to hit the jerkbait, try worms or Chattahoochee Jigs worked slowly down the rock bank. Position your boat in deeper water and cast towards the bank. Work the bait slowly and methodically back to the boat, paying particular attention to your lure’s movements. Bites in the late fall and winter are often VERY subtle. Once you detect something unusual in your lure’s action, set the hook. While these areas are not the only possible places to find fish on Lake Lanier in the late fall, they are some very good areas to begin your search. Remember to look for bait and fish in an area before fishing it – fish where the fish are! Good luck out there and see you on the water! It’s all about that fish…or is it? Contributed By: Wayne Wooten I have been asked; is it just about catching fish? Wouldn’t it be easier to go to the grocery store and simply buy some? I began to ponder these questions and here is what I came up with. I started fishing when I was 6 or so. My grandfather (Pop) Wooten purchased 12 acres out in the country with a big creek running through it. Pop and my dad would take me with them to work on the property. I was too young to help, so to keep me occupied, Pop bought me a cane pole, a tub of red wigglers and made some fishing spots on the creek’s bank. They could keep an eye on me and interact while they worked, and it gave me something to do. I fished there for years and later taught my sister there too! So fishing was my first baby sitter! When I was about 10, Pops bought a cabin on the Yellow

River/Lake Jackson. I was now an adventurer because a wooden flatbottom boat with a 9.5 HP Johnson came with the deal! I was now taking friends to the lake with me for the weekend, and we would cruise the willows setting limb lines and using our Johnson Centuries and Zebcos to cast to cover. It was sardines, crackers and cokes for lunch, and we talked about everything under the sun. We didn’t have a care in the world, just two guys living the life! So fishing is my first social network. When we were not at Lake Jackson, my friends and I would get our parents to take us or walk to local pay lakes. One of my friends was Larry Barnes. As I was the first guy in our group to get a driving license, we would load up my 59 Ford and hit Lake Jackson on our own, which we did often! It was our primary hangout, and our parents approved.

After graduation, life happened so Larry and I didn’t see each other for about 40 years. We reconnected in 2010 and what do you think was the first thing we asked each other? Have you been fishing? Well, it only took a month or so and we were back at it again like we never missed a beat. I’ve fished all these years at what started as something to keep me occupied (and still is), what became

my first social network (and still is), what was a series of adventures (and still is). I have barely mentioned catching fish; which is what we do and like doing! I will have to say, yes, it is all about the fish, without the fish we wouldn’t have a reason to go. And yes, buying fish would be easier, but then you couldn’t have these wonderful experiences.

Local Lakes & Forecasts How to Grow Bigger, Healthier Fish Using Lime and Fertilizer Applications by Steven King Lake management specialist and avid bass tournament fisherman

because there can be negative effects if it does not. The way to determine this, is to have a water quality test done, to check the alkalinity and PH levels of the water. What is alkalinity? It is the capability of water to neutralize the acidity levels(PH). When testing the water, if the alkalinity level is at or below 20ppm, then the use of a liming application would be beneficial. Typically, the natural alkalinity levels of most Southeastern lakes are no higher than 20 ppm without a lime application. The PH or acidity of the water is very important for a healthy ecosystem and if the PH drops below 6 or above 9, that can stress the fish causing them to die. This is why using lime to increase the alkalinity or ability to regulate changes in PH before considering adding a fertilizer is necessary, if the alkalinity is below 20ppm. The addition of fertilizer essentially functions as the food to promote phytoplankton growth, but it will also increase other plant growth as well. So it is also important that a fertilizer application is not done if there is a substantial amount of

A common question that I am frequently asked by clients with private or community lakes that are used for fishing is, “how do we get bigger bass for better fishing?” The obvious answer would be to increase the amount of available food by stocking more baitfish, but that doesn’t always mean you will have “bigger” fish. Very often lakes in the Southeast will have plenty of small fry and baitfish for the larger predatory species like bass to feed on because the warm weather throughout the year allows many of these fish to spawn multiple times a year and adding more food into the ecosystem can have a counter effect if there is already a substantial forage fish population present. When this is the case, increasing the overall size, growth rate and health of the fish that bass feed

on, will have the same effect on the bass themselves. This can be achieved by implementing the proper applications of lime and fertilizer into the water column. This essentially adds more available nutrients into the water for aquatic plant growth, primarily phytoplankton to grow. The entire aquatic ecosystem is based on the production of phytoplankton, which are microscopic organisms that are at the very bottom of the food chain. Without phytoplankton, newly hatched fish and smaller baitfish would have nothing to eat and adding fertilizer will increase the available nutrients and the potential population of phytoplankton that can grow. There are certain water quality criteria a body of water needs to meet to be able to use this method

vegetation and algae already present. If so, the fertilizer will cause these plants to grow very quickly and out of control, which is not good for the ecosystem. The correct timing of these applications is also a key component. Usually liming is done in the fall/ winter months and fertilizer in the spring once the water temperature reaches 60 degrees consistently. A liming application will usually last 3-4 years while fertilizer applications should be done from springtime throughout the summer on a yearly basis, to keep a good consistent phytoplankton bloom. The frequency of the fertilizer applications can vary and will depend on each specific body of water. Ultimately, the first step before attempting to implement lime/fertilizer applications should always be to contact a lake management specialist to come out and assess your lake to see if you meet all the criteria. To contact ILM for any of your lake management needs, please call Steven King at 678-207-7631 or send an email to sking@ilmenvironments. com.

Where Can I Catch Big Catfish in Georgia? By: Gary Turner

15 pounds. Turn the others back to catch and release again when they are bigger and bigger. Also, when you do catch big catfish hold them with two hands. Putting too much pressure on the fish’s jaw by hanging all of its weight on its jaw can dislocate and damage the jaw and may result in the fish dying after release. Be careful not to damage the gills, this is a slow killer for the fish also. What we need is for more and more people to encourage

Do you want to catch giant catfish in Georgia? If you said the Southeast, or even neighboring states, I could tell you plenty of places to go. Only a few hours away there is amazing giant catfishing in Guntersville AL, Chattanooga TN, and Santee Cooper SC to name a few. Then, if you want to go a little further, there are even more possibilities. The Mississippi River in Memphis TN has big catfish. I was on the dock at Mudd Island a few weeks ago when Bill Dance, Jeff Dodd and Jon Worden pulled up with a 69 pound blue that Bill had caught that morning. Yes, Bill Dance, the fishing legend, loves trophy catfishing too. The next day Tim and Teresa Owenby landed a 70 pounder. Both fish are alive and well to live another day. Guntersville has the same kind of fishing, monster blues and flatheads abound there. So, back to the real question; after all, this isn’t a presidential debate. Where can you go and hope to land a big blue or flathead in Georgia? Well, I wish I could tell you some proven spots like I have been to in other states. The truth is there are many large catfish in Georgia. The state record flathead is 83 pounds from the Altamaha, and the state record blue is 80 pounds caught from the Walter F. George Reservoir. Last week, the Lake Oconee record was shattered with a 69 pound blue being reeled in. Big fish are getting bigger in Georgia, and our lake records are increasing. That is the good news if you are a trophy angler and like fishing closer to home rather than driving to other states and paying for non-resident licenses and hotel rooms. To give you a few examples, these lake records are on the rise: Lake Sinclair: channel catfish 21-lbs. 5-ozs., flathead catfish 36lbs. 11.2-ozs., blue catfish 48-lbs. 9-ozs. Lake Oconee: channel catfish 34-lbs. 8-ozs., blue catfish 69-lbs. 7-ozs., flathead catfish 49-lbs. 1.28ozs. Lake Hartwell: blue catfish 30-

lbs. 8-ozs., flathead catfish 66-lbs. Clarks Hill: blue catfish 62-lbs., flathead catfish 64-lbs. 3.5-ozs., channel catfish 25-lbs. 2-ozs. There are a lot of other great rivers and lakes all over Georgia that contain giant catfish. The Coosa and Ocmulgee Rivers come to mind. Lake Jackson also has a growing population. So my question to you is would you like to catch more giant catfish like this in Georgia? I know I sure would! So here is what I am going to ask you to do to help grow more monster catfish in Georgia’s lakes and rivers: when you catch large catfish, release them. I have talked to many fishermen in Georgia who have broken state records with rods and reels and released the fish to fight another day. To these conservationists I say, “Thank you!” I know there are also some jug and limb line fishermen who have released some very large fish, “Thank you too!” If we all work together, we could be catching trophy catfish in many areas of Georgia. I am sure Georgia has dozens of blue catfish and flatheads that approach, and some that surpass, the 100 pound mark. So why are so few catfish over 50 pounds caught in Georgia? There are several possible factors that contribute to the scarcity of these great fish. Many catfishermen have the mindset that blue and flathead fish are an unlimited resource. They are “just catfish”. Funny, those “just catfish” if released back into the water can grow to trophy sizes and one day be the story of a lifetime for people all of ages that catch them. Another point that needs stressing here is the fact that a fish that does grow to the 50 pound and over mark can pass on its genes and lays a very large number of eggs. So what can you do to help Georgia keep these giant catfish alive and swimming and, most importantly, reproducing? Turn back big fish. Even the 20 pound fish have made it over the hump and are on their way to growing BIG. The best eating fish are 5 to

Water temperature: 69-74 degrees, water clarity: clear/stained. The early morning bite has been on a variety of baits. Topwater is catching fish as long as you are finding activity. Long shallow points, rocks & sea walls are the target areas. Finding baitfish in these areas increases your chances of bites. Shallow running crankbaits are catching fish as well, targeting the same areas. A big bite can come early on either of these baits. As the sun comes up, just follow the shad and switch to a deeper running

crankbait in shad patterns. Shaky heads are catching the less aggressive fish. Brush is a key once the sun is up. Don’t hesitate to stick with topwater, as the action may slow down, but you can still get a big bite. Shallow docks with rocks or brush with a jig is also producing good quality bites. As the water temp continues to drop, the bait will school up and the bass will be close. Take advantage of the cooler temps as Jackson only gets better. Some big bags can be caught. The lake is less crowded this time of year making it more enjoyable for the bass fisherman. Until next month take a child fishing so they too can enjoy the outdoors. Tight lines.

Local Lakes & Forecasts The Motivated Mindset of Fishing By: Ryan Kennedy YouTube: Ryan Kennedy Fishing Instagram: ryankfishing ryankfishing@gmail.com

What happened out there this weekend? Whether it was an after-work fishing trip, a major tournament, or a local derby competing for gas money and bragging rights, sometimes things just don’t go our way. It never ceases to amaze me that a twenty-pound limit during the week can shrink down to a couple of squeakers by the weekend. Maybe a weather system rolled through and changed the position of the fish or maybe it just wasn’t meant to be. So, what now? We load the boat on the trailer and ready ourselves for the next outing. No matter how down on ourselves we may get or how many times the rods get thrown back in the rod locker with an “I’m done” mindset, we keep pressing on. Fishing is one of the few activities

out there that will always offer hope for a new day no matter how many bad trips or tournaments we endure. How does a bad day on the water offer us hope to go out and try again on the next fishing trip? If we look deep down inside of ourselves, we all know that the next bite could be our new personal best or the fish that wins a tournament. This deeplyrooted passion will follow us to our graves. It’s the crisp morning air, the beautifully painted sunrise that takes your breath away, the feeling of a bite at the end of your line, and letting your stress go as you set the hook after a bad day that keeps us coming back for more. It’s not just a hobby we are dealing with; fishing is passionate obsession. One of my favorite examples of a person who possesses a never

ending passion for the sport of fishing is Bassmaster Elite Series Pro, Rick Clunn. In March of this year, Clunn, at age sixty-nine, claimed his fifteenth B.A.S.S. win on the St. John’s River. Before this tournament, many people declared that Rick Clunn’s glory days were over and that it was time to throw in the towel. Clunn placed the negative opinions about his career and age behind him, kept pressing forward, and showed the

world that the dream is still out there every day, and with hard work it can be achieved. So, if you are thinking about giving up, you may want to reconsider… because the fish that completely changes your perspective could be just one cast away. Keep your chin up and keep that rod tip bent… tight lines. “Never let yourself believe that your best moments are behind you.” – Rick Clunn

Forecast by Jeremy Seabolt seaboltsguideservice@yahoo.com 706-994-8649 Water temperature is 75 to 78. Fishing is good. I have had the best topwater bite I have seen in a few years. We have been pulling planer boards and weighted free lines first thing, then switching over to down rods about 9 AM or so, but still keep that topwater bait out. The fish have been running bait up all day. Moving into November will mean it’s time to start hitting the creeks and

start pulling big shad and bluebacks in search of big stripers. Fishing should be good all the way through November pulling planer boards and downlines. Start looking around points 4 and 5. If you do not see any fish busting the surface, then work the humps and points. Now and all way through November you can catch lots fish at first light and after dark working the bank with a Redfin or a Boomer. You can always keep up with what the fish are doing and what we are catching each week on our Facebook page. Check us out on lakenottelyfishingcharter.com.

The End of Summer, Finally Another summer has come to an end, and I didn’t need the calendar or the weatherman to tell me it was so. All the signs are there if you know what to look for starting with the fact that, despite the warm temperatures in the afternoon, it could almost be described as chilly in the morning. The water snake that rules the creek in my front yard has not made an appearance in two weeks, and many of the leaves have already started turning. I can usually find many things to be happy about when summer comes to an end, but this year is different. The bee Martin’s, bluebirds and all the other finch type birds that usually entertain me in the evening now have a seriousness about their food gathering that tells me they are getting ready to make a long trip to go wherever such birds go for the cold weather. The whitetail bucks have shed their summer velvet and have begun

their solitary existence. The mountain whispers to me the changes are on the way, and I finally realized that it was speaking both figuratively and literally. Due to progress, I am about to lose the place that I call paradise. One more winter and one more spring, and then I will have to find another place to call home. I know that my columns are usually warm and happy, but I’m sure my readers understand that we all go through hard times. Not only did I lose one four-legged friend this past summer, I am soon to lose another. Festus, my long-time running buddy and partner through too many adventures to count has something the vets can’t fix, and his time is measured in months. And of all the ways that I’m going to miss him, the worst is that he will not be around to comfort me over the loss of my best friend, the two legged kind.

optimistic about spectacular colors for fall, I intend to cherish every step we take through the mountains. But there are many strays out there that need love, and it can be had for a pat on the head. All my life Mother Nature has seen to it that a dog in need of a home will find me. As the water cools we will switch from herring and shad to trout. The technique is the same, just a hardier bait to keep and a lot easier to obtain in cold weather. I like moving slowly and allowing the baits to swim freely vs. actually being pulled through the water. Long leaders and circle hooks are the way to go to increase your hook ups. Pulling baits around shallow points, submerged timber

and the backs of creeks should be productive all month for stripers. The spots are scattered, but the bigger fish are showing up in their normal locations for November. Doll Mountain, the area around Woodring ramp, the area around the dam ramp and the marina all have had some big green fish showing up in force.

Lake Burton

Forecast by: Capt. Wes Carlton Georgia Lake Fishing 770-318-9777 www.georgialakefishing.com Water temperature: 68 degrees, lake level: full, clarity: clear. Walleye: The walleye have finally starting feeding shallower on the northern lakes. These fish are biting in the 30 to 40 foot depths. We have been catching them down-lining blue-back herring in and around main lake points. Look for the walleye to pull up in the 20 foot range over the next few weeks. A 3/8 ounce jig head tipped with a Zoom Fat Albert will be the ticket. Bass: The topwater bite has begun with big schools showing up on main lake points and out over the main lake channel. These fish are aggressive and numerous. We

have been catching most of the fish on Lucky Craft Sammys. We are not seeing the size of fish that we have in the past, but the number of fish seem to be up. Look for this bite to continue and the swimbait bite to pick up. The low 60 degree mark seems to be the best bite on the northern Lakes. Trout: The brown trout bite has really taken off! Most of the fish we have been targeting have been up shallow chasing the herring around. This is a good time of year to sight fish for the trout. Keep a Rapala Countdown or a Rooster Tail ready. Some of the trout we have caught have been in the 5 pound range and long. The brown trout should continue to feed shallower in the next few weeks. The optimum temperatures for these fish seems to be in the high 50 degree range. Start looking for the trout to make their way towards the creek channels to spawn. Good Luck.

Local Lakes & Forecasts lake lanier spotted bass Forecast By: Ryan Coleman LanierSpots Pro Guide Service 770-356-4136 Water temps are in the low 70’s and dropping. The water level is at 7.5 feet below full pool and dropping as well. Both are good things. The low water this time of year really helps bunch the fish up for us on Lanier and if we can keep it down for a few months, the winter bite will come on strong and be very good. For now, fish are still holding out on points and brush and can be caught on some very typical baits. I have been doing very well in the mornings working a ¾ ounce and 1 ounce Mini-Me spinnerbait off points with wind as well as a mechanical swimbait like a Sebile Magic Swimmer or 5” Bull Herring. As the sun comes up, the topwater bite has been good but that may not last long. The cool temps coming in may zap that bite, so by the time this report gets printed, that could be over with. It is certainly something to keep in mind. As the water cools below the 70 degree mark, look for the jerkbait and crankbait bite to get strong along with the jig and worm bite. The lake has been turning over and should finish the process by

the end of November. During that time, the fish really change day to day depending on where the good water is. Good water being good oxygen and temperature which is determined by the wind and current. Once we get in mid-November, start looking for deep ditches and creek channels with deep timber and sharp drops. This will be your magic from now till February. The fish will start to pile up in these ditches and be there for a while. It is all dependent on the water level and temperature. For jigs, try a 3/8 ounce or 1/2 Green Craw casting jig or Brown Living Rubber colors for the deeper water. The living rubber gives great action in the cold water temperatures. As for worms, rig a ZOOM Swamp Crawler or Trick Worm on a 3/16 oounce or 1/4 ounce SpotSticker Screwball head and put it on 8 pound fluorocarbon. You are ready with this rig from now till April. You should not go to Lanier over the next 5 months without this rig. You will not use it all day but you will use it every day. Look for fish on your Lowrance, drop or cast to them and just work slowly across the bottom. This is a very simple technique and the fish usually hold on, so don’t be in a hurry to set the hook. Good luck out there.

LAKE SINCLAIR BASS

Lake Sinclair is down 1.3 feet, with the water temperature in the low 80’s and the water clear. Bass fishing is good. Topwater lures and buzzbaits are working every morning. A good approach is to use both a small and large buzzbait and perhaps a standard Pop R and a large Chug Bug. Try a Mann’s Baby One Minus reeled fast. The bites have come from main river banks to near

the back of coves and the seawalls. Docks and boathouses are holding fish that are hitting jigs, soft plastics, and some on crankbaits. Primary points and flats along the creek runs and secondary points in coves are beginning to hold fish that are slowly headed farther in. Crankbaits or Carolina rigs will usually catch a few of these structure holding groups of fish. Depths of these fish are varying from about 6 to 12 feet deep up the lake to 10 to 20 feet deep down the lake. Rip rap continues to hold a few fish, also. Crankbaits, lightweight Texas rigs, and jig head and worm rigs are good.

Local Lakes & Forecasts The Upcoming Sportsperson’s Holiday Gift Giving Season:Is Customer Service Important? Contributed By: Dr. Andrew Cox Professor at Troy University, Phenix City, Alabama. andrewtrout@aol.com. With the coming of November, the holiday gift season is upon us. Many readers are thinking about a gift for friends, relatives, family members, or acquaintances who enjoy outdoor activities. Most likely, you will be turning to catalogs, online shopping websites, and local as well as big box sporting goods outlets for your shopping items. In my estimation, customer service continues to be an important part of the shopping experience. I like to think that spending my hard earned money is appreciated by a business. Customer service is also essential in assisting you in making purchases or working through glitches that may take place in the purchasing process. I was reminded of the importance of customer service when attempting to make an online purchase through one of the third tier big box sporting

goods stores. I had initially shopped at this particular sporting goods outlet while visiting Anchorage, Alaska several years ago. I was pleased to find that this company had a few stores in selected cities across the southeast United States. The company also had the capacity for making online purchases. I desired to purchase a waterproof flybox and over the course of shopping, added other tackle items to my order. I experienced difficulty in the online checkout process, receiving some type of error message during checkout. I telephoned customer service leaving a message for contact to assist me on this order. I subsequently contacted this customer service number on several occasions, leaving several voice messages, but never received a call back. It appears that a live person never answers the customer service

line nor responds to messages that are left on the voicemail. Out of frustration, I completed a survey regarding my shopping experience that was available on the business website that was fairly negative. You guessed it; no response to the survey. I have given up on making purchases at this sporting goods business. I also discussed my negative experience with several angling friends that may have impacted their purchasing views with this business. I ended up purchasing my flybox from the manufacturer’s website. Even though I paid two or three dollars more for the flybox, a smooth and hassle free purchase was worth the extra dollars. I would suspect that readers have had similar negative shopping experiences that have influenced decisions in shopping with a particular business. I can say that the first and most second tier sporting goods outlets have their act together. Online and catalog purchases, if available, are usually hassle free with effective customer service personnel available to assist with any problems that may occur. I have also done business with several of the businesses that advertise within this magazine. These smaller business establishments have

COASTALANGLERMAG.COM • THEANGLERMAG.COM

friendly customer service that make you feel appreciated as a customer. Is customer service important for those upcoming holiday gifts? I think so; with positive and hassle free shopping during the holiday season, you are likely to return as a customer to make purchases during other times of the year. The business gains a valuable and reliable customer; you the customer find a pleasant outlet for expanding your sporting goods supplies. Water temperature: 82 to 85 degrees, lake level: one foot below full pool, clarity: clear. We are finally getting into our fall fishing season with cooler days here on Lake Seminole. The bass have started turning onto their fall feed and are chasing the baitfish all over the lake. There’s nothing like going out and seeing the ripple of the baitfish with the bass chasing them, and throwing your white Strike King Tour Grade Buzzbait right in the middle of it and catching a big bass. There’s been a flipping bite as the sun comes up and the activity slows down. Try flipping with an ounce to an ounce and half tungsten weight with a beaver-style bait like a Charlie’s Worms Flippin’ Bug in black and blue color.

The upper third of Spring Creek has been producing well with reaction baits like a Strike King Sexy Dawg in bone color fished around the grass lines along the banks. Spring Creek is beautiful this time of year when the leaves are starting to turn and it’s nice and cool outside. The Flint River below Bainbridge has been productive for bass and crappie, fishing the grass lines closest to the deeper water. The campers down in Bass Island Campground at Wingate’s Lunker Lodge have been bringing crappie in on minnows and light jigs fished along the edges of the old river channel. They are catching limits every day then having some awesome fish fries. Hybrids and stripers have been schooling on the main lake and are being caught on Alabama Rigs rigged with a 4” Charlie’s Worm Alabama Minnow in pearl white. The ones we’ve seen are huge and the folks love pulling them in!

by Mark Smith Reel Time Service at 404-803-0741 or reeltime@bellsouth.net Lake Oconee is 1.5 feet low with the lake clear with a little stain up the rivers. Water temperature is in the upper 70s. Hybrid fishing is good. Due to the cooler water the fish are schooling on top all over the lake. I would suggest having a popping cork ready so when they come up you will be ready. Some

of these schools have some big fish while other schools contain small ones. Watch the size of the bait these fish will be chasing. Your larger bait will have the better fish. Crappie fishing is good. A lot of crappie have moved to brush in 15 feet of water, but the fish are only 5 to 7 foot deep. Trolling has started to pick up in the back of Sugar Creek and also in the mouth of most of the main creeks. The bites have been very light but some fish in the 1.5 to 2 pound range have been caught.

Forecast By: Capt David Hare 256-401-3089 Alex City Guide Service Water temperature: 74-76 degrees, lake level 485.4, clarity: very clear. October for the most part was great fishing. Had to work for them, but it paid off with some nice catches. Now here it is November and the live bait bite is on! If like past Novembers, you will find us in shallower waters than the last couple months. The later in the month it gets, the bigger the bait we will use and target huge trophy stripers! Unless it has finally started raining when you read this, then I suspect the water level is down to around 482-481, nothing a whole lot different than past years. By saying this, I’m basically telling you that your normal November fishing areas should look very familiar and your past tactics for fishing should be close to last November. For those of you that have never

ne of the keys to great inshore fishing is being on the water with the right weather. Stable weather between the coldest day of a postfrontal situation and several hours after the passage of the next cold front is critical at this time of year. Stable conditions with normal tide height and movement would the starting point for a good trip. The fish feed actively during this time and are more predictable in location and feeding times. These days would normally have a warming trend with a light onshore wind and slightly dropping barometer. Baitfish tend to be on the surface during these periods and will readily show themselves. Prefrontal conditions are the next choice. This period would be within the 12 hours that a frontal passage is approaching. Barometer is typically dropping and onshore winds can increase to near unsafe conditions that only seasoned mariners should attempt to handle. However, the prefrontal bite if you can go, can produce the biggest fish as well as the most aggressive feeds. The fish are gorging prior to the next high pressure. Also, this is a great day to fish if you like topwater action. Finally, the few hours after a cold front has passed can also be good this month. Focus on drains coming from marshes that empty onto some other structure such as an oyster reef in 3 to 5 feet or a point, drop-off or deeper grass flat with broken bottom. Tobin created the TroutSupport.com instructional series and his products have recieved hundreds of positive reviews from anglers wanting to reach the next level.

raveling across the country for the last three years with the Bassmaster Elite Series has led me to some amazing fishing destinations. I’ve been about as far as one can go in every direction in the United States and have gotten to experience some great fishing. Although I don’t have a definitive answer on where my favorite place to fish is, I will say that without a doubt my favorite fish to target are big northern smallmouth bass. Let’s talk about some of the places I’ve been and what makes the places and the

Lakes. My next experience with northern smallies was on the St. Lawrence River in upstate New York. The Thousand Islands area is a beautiful part of the country and should be on every bass fisherman’s bucket list. The river is full of fish, and a lot of people there seem to fish more for other species so the smallmouth are quite catchable. A little ways away on Lake Ontario is the home of more willing smallmouth. Next on the list is Lake St. Clair in Michigan. St. Clair is

fisheries so special. My very first experience with the Great Lakes was at the Elite Series AOY championship in 2014 in Escanaba, Mich. I ended up finishing that tournament in ninth place and qualified for my first Bassmaster Classic. I was super impressed with the place as soon as I rolled into town. Everyone in Escanaba was very nice and hospitable, which is something you don’t find everywhere these days. It is a nice quiet town much like the Tennessee town I was raised in, with great places to eat and nice places to stay. As far as the fishery, just take a look at the weights from that tournament and they will speak for themselves. Little Bay and Big Bay de Noc are chock-full of big smallmouth as well as walleye, pike, perch and everything else you would expect to find in the Great

unique because you can either fish in the lake, which is great, or you can fish one of the rivers that flows into or out of the lake, which is what I chose to do when I was there. In all these places, smallmouth bass will absolutely chew a small soft plastic bait on a Mustad dropshot hook fished on a MHX EPS 81MLXF rod from Mud Hole Custom Tackle. Catching these fish requires good electronics, so I rely heavily on my Raymarine units to locate the big schools. As I was writing this last week, I got thinking I needed to go and pay those smallmouth a visit. My dad and I jumped in the car, drove to Lake Michigan and had a ball. I would encourage you to do the same before it gets too cold!

here’s stocking trout, and then there’s unintentionally releasing 80,000 rainbow trout into the open ocean. In the short-term, recreational anglers will be the beneficiaries of a $1.5 million accident at a Danish fish farm. Reuters reports that a cargo vessel collided with fish farm nets between Danish Islands in the Baltic Sea on Oct. 11. The fish, which were bound for the slaughterhouse within a few days’ time, weighed about 6.6 pounds each. Recreational anglers are being encouraged to get out on the fjord and catch as many of the escapees as possible. Authorities are concerned the jailbreak could have disastrous consequences for the native sea-run rainbow trout populations. According to the Associated Press report, wild populations are preparing to run up the rivers to spawn right now, and their eggs would make tasty morsels for the farmed fish. Other Danish biologists have dismissed the threat as minimal because the farmed trout are unprepared for life in the wild and are conditioned to heavy feedings. There is a good chance the fish will die of starvation or be consumed by larger predators before they are able to do much damage. One thing is for sure, if there are Walmarts in Denmark, the shelves will be emptied of spinners, salmon eggs, Powerbait and canned corn. There isn’t a stocked trout in the world that can resist Green Giant Niblets.

PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT PIRANA FISHING LURES With its patented Jet Trail System, Pirana Fishing Lures has given the fishing world one of those “why didn’t someone think of this before” moments. Pirana has taken proven elements of highly successful crankbaits and jerkbaits and given them a new feature that is the most innovative and effective to hit the market in years. These lures leave a bubble trail, an enticement that draws in predatory fish and triggers them to strike. The effectiveness of bubble trails is well documented. Bluewater anglers troll jet head lures. Bass anglers fish gurglers and buzzbaits. Pirana’s Jet Trail System brings the same concept to crankbaits and jerkbaits. With an open mouth and gill slots along the lure’s sides, water is forced through the lure on retrieve to create the jet trail. Pirana has also put a lot into the details. These lures have a finely tuned wobble and dive as well as a rattle chamber for additional noise. Bright red gills, holographic silver eyes, a hex-scale pattern and a high-gloss finish complete the package. The lasting trail of bubbles, however, is what sets them apart. Pirana’s latest, which should hit the market soon, is the new and improved P200, which has a lip above the mouth opening. Whether the target species are redfish, seatrout and snook inshore or largemouth and smallmouth bass or trout in freshwater, anything that will eat a plug will be more likely to eat one with a jet trail. PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT UNDERWATER FISH LIGHT If you live on the water or have ever cruised any local canals or shorelines at night, you’ve probably seen how effective and widespread Underwater Fish Light’s products are. They seem to be just about everywhere, and are almost always loaded with fish. Their classic Natural Green lights look amazing in any waterway, but they recently released a new line of Vibrant Green underwater lights that illuminate the water with a richer green color that really stands out from the crowd. In addition to the unique look, these lights are also 50 percent brighter than the classic systems and are perfect for those looking to “out glow” their neighbors. Of course these new lights come backed by the same guarantees that Underwater Fish Light is famous for, including their well known “Fish Guaranteed or Your Money Back” promise. You can try the new Vibrant Green systems or any of their other models for sixty nights in your own waterway, and if you’re not thrilled with the performance of the light, you can return it for a full refund. Obviously they don’t get too many returns. There is also a new line of Caribbean Blue underwater lights that look incredible in clear waterways, but customers outside of the Florida Keys should opt for either the Natural Green or Vibrant Green, as these will look the best in murkier waters. With a 3-year warranty and money back guarantee, you can’t go wrong with Underwater Fish Light. Visit them online at www.FishLight.com or call 1-855-FISH-LIGHT for more information.

PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT INHIBITOR VCI PRO CHIPS FOR CORROSION PROTECTION Protecting your fishing gear from rust and corrosion has never been easier, or more effective. The Inhibitor VCI offers unrivaled corrosion and rust prevention to protect lures, hooks, reels and more. Fishing tackle is a magnet for rust and corrosion. Many people do not fully appreciate the money and time avid anglers put into building their collection of lures. Rust will damage hooks, split rings and the body of the lure. With VCI Pro Chips you can make sure you never lose any of your fishing equipment to rust. Saltwater speeds up rust and corrosion; protect your fishing tackle from saltwater. Inhibitor VCI Pro Chips are a safe, easy and economical way to ensure your fishing tackle, tool boxes, small part bins and any other small metal items stay rust free. Each chip is treated on both sides with Volatile Corrosion Inhibitors that release a non-toxic vapor to blend with moisture and oxygen and stop rust and corrosion. The special vapors penetrate into the smallest cracks or crevices, providing total protection in marine environments. There is no scent residue. Fish will never know you are rust free! With Inhibitor rust prevention products, even saltwater cannot cause your fishing tackle to rust or corrode. They are great for parts bins and tool boxes at home, too. It works on all ferrous and non-ferrous metals: brass, bronze, copper, aluminum, steel, and stainless steel. Visit www.theinhibitor.com to get your 20-pack of VCI Pro Chips for only $5.99.

Ever considered how different your life would be if you didn’t have to hand over the bulk of your sales revenue to your employer? Have you ever thought about how much easier your sales job could be if you didn’t have to beg your sales manager for every little extra thing that you wanted to give your customer?
