tretching 500 miles across the northern side of the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico, the Puerto Rico Trench is the deepest in the Atlantic Ocean. This 6-mile-deep feature is part of what makes the Virgin Islands one of the world’s best sportfishing destinations. Here, where the Atlantic Ocean borders the clear waters of the Caribbean Sea, the Virgin Islands rise as the peaks of an enormous underwater mountain chain. The islands offer some of the best diving, snorkeling and most beautiful beaches anywhere, but it is off these islands that serious anglers come to play. Beneath the surface, the topography is spectacular. About 20 miles north of St. Thomas, the travel hub of the U.S. Virgin Islands, the North Drop falls precipitously to depths of more than 28,000 feet into the Puerto Rico Trench. Cool Atlantic currents are stirred off Virgin Gorda, and sea life abounds. The big pelagic species congregate to feed on an abundance of baitfish drawn by the drop. A similar situation occurs off the South Drop, just 8 miles south of St. Thomas, and the smaller drops around St. Croix. Short boat rides put anglers on abundant baitfish and the bigger fish that feed on them. Marlin can be caught year-round, but spring to fall is peak time for blue marlin, which show up in numbers and feed aggressively around the full moons. The bite is legendary. The IGFA Women’s alltackle world record, a 1,073-pound blue marlin, was caught off the Virgin Islands, along with 24 other world records over the years. The granders—1,000-pound-plus marlin—show up on occasion, but the Virgin Islands also offer numbers. During the USVI Open/Atlantic Blue Marlin Tournament, 207 blue marlin were released over four days of fishing. Marlin average about 350 pounds out of St. Thomas, and 500-pounders are caught regularly. But blues aren’t the only game in town. The location of these islands 6

almost seems strategic. Sailfish, white marlin, tuna, wahoo, dolphin… the most sought after gamefish for sport and the table frequent these drops in good numbers to feed. Working the drop by trolling rigs across the depth contours produces consistently good action year-round. The sailfish bite peaks October through March. Yellowfin tuna are present late summer through winter, and blackfin and skipjack tuna provide

action year-round. Wahoo are also a year-round target, and dolphin fishing peaks in fall. The fishing is world class, and the Virgin Islands are also easy to get to. A short plane ride from the continental U.S. puts anglers in the middle of the action. And with lodging that ranges from quaint to luxurious, there are options for anyone who wants to live out their offshore fantasy. To learn more about the Puerto Rico Trench, go to

he numbers don’t lie. Guatemala’s Pacific coast is the most productive sailfish destination in the world. Days of double-digit releases would be considered spectacular anywhere. Off Guatemala, it’s just an average day. Annual release rates show a dozen sailfish per boat, per day. And that’s just a year-round average. It is not unusual during peak seasons for boats to raise more than 50 or 60 sails a day, sometimes a lot more. In March of 2006, Capt. Ron Hamlin, and the anglers on the Captain Hook, released 124 sailfish in a single day less than 15 miles off Guatemala. The legendary former skipper out of Casa Vieja Lodge in Puerto San Jose still holds the record. For conventional anglers, it’s pretty much a sure thing. For fly anglers, it’s the best odds you’ll find. The concentrations of sailfish in this small slice of the Pacific are astounding. But it’s not just sails. Natural factors such as dramatically shifting currents, temperature barriers and high oxygen levels close to the surface combine to hold baitfish year-round. The eddy formations that swirl off the Guatemalan coast are crowded with life, including the big pelagics and the fish they feed on. There are more Pacific sailfish than can be found anywhere, but there are also marlin, wahoo, slammer Dorado and yellowfin tuna. Casa Vieja Lodge says blue marlin in the 200- to 400-pound range are thickest April through July, with black marlin up to 400 pounds showing up December through March and smaller striped marlin November through January. On average, every Casa Vieja boat encounters marlin every three days while targeting sailfish. During peak billfish seasons of December through March and then again from May through July, grand slams are an everyday possibility. Boats fish anywhere from 2 to 50 miles out in an area renowned for flat seas. The most consistently productive area is a canyon known as “The Pocket.” Only about 40 nautical miles wide, The Pocket drops to depths of 3,500 to 4,000 feet. Those constantly shifting currents deflect off the walls of the pocket stirring up nutrient rich waters that attract bait and big gamefish. Casa Vieja takes the fishing very seriously. Guided by some of the world’s top-tagging and award winning captains, their fleet of classically maintained 35’ Contenders and 40’ Sportfishers consistently produces world-class results. They are inheritors of history. A majority of the

captains and lodge staff were employees of the original Fins ’n Feathers Inn that launched the Guatemalan sportfishing industry. These are the same sportsmen who have cared for the fishery since it exploded onto the sportfishing scene in the 1990s. With total release using circle hooks, the conservation philosophy has been central to Casa Vieja’s operations for more than a decade. With this kind of stewardship, as well as emphasis from the Guatemalan Government on limiting commercial fishing, the fishery continues to thrive. The lodge was also designed by lifelong sportsmen who know it is best to recover from a non-stop day of action on the water in worldclass accommodations. Luxurious rooms and top-notch local cuisine are paired with a staff trained to fill the needs of discerning travelers. It’s the perfect place to relive the day’s catch or dream of the morning’s possibilities. For more information on fishing Guatemala and the Casa Vieja Lodge, go to www.casaviejalodge.com.

our Rip Roller is tearing up the water as you retrieve it in short quick jerks. Suddenly the water explodes from the vicious strike of a peacock bass. In your excitement and shock, you instinctively jerk your rod up before the peacock has had a chance to get the hook firmly in his mouth, and 6 inches of lure and three massive treble hooks come flying past your head. Your first encounter with the huge peacock bass of Brazil’s Amazon will be one you never forget. Fishing for this massive, hard-fighting predator can be best described to anglers as hooking into a 20-pound smallmouth bass that is having a bad day. To top off this fishing adventure, you are fishing over 1,000 miles from the ocean in the heart of the world’s largest rain forest on black water rivers that are home to more than 2,500 species of fish and the world’s greatest diversity of flora and fauna. Anglers will catch four or five different species of peacock bass, ranging from the popoca and butterfly species weighing an average of 3 to 5 pounds to the massive paca or arzu, the current world record of which is a 29-pounder caught by Andrea Zaccherini in 2010. Anglers can also catch aerobatic arowana, several species of catfish weighing upwards of 200 pounds, wolf fish and myriad other species. Peacocks will readily hit topwater baits on waters that aren’t heavily pressured, the most famous being the big propeller driven Woodchopper and its clones, as well as the more subtle Spook type baits. As with most species of fish, subsurface jerkbaits and jigs will produce bigger numbers of fish caught than topwater lures. Fly fishermen have discovered this game

hey call Islamorada the Sportfishing Capital of the World. This slim string of six small islands about halfway down the Florida Keys separates the Atlantic from the Gulf of Mexico, and just offshore in the Atlantic, warm blue currents of the Gulf Stream deliver a steady flow of baitfish and the big migrating pelagic species that feed on them. The Continental Shelf is a highway for swordfish that move through in depths of 1,400 to 1,900 feet with a consistency that may be unmatched anywhere in the world. It is possible to target these deepwater giants any month of the year off Islamorada, and even during the day. But it is sportfishing only for hardcore anglers. Swordfish are elusive anywhere, the most difficult of the billfish to catch, and fights lasting several hours are the reward for tempting a bite from 150- to 400-pound or larger fish deep in the abyss. If catching a swordfish is one of the boxes that remains to be checked off on your bucket list, you’d be hard pressed to find a better place to do it. A little closer in, where the Gulf Stream swings over broken bottom and the offshore humps Islamorada has become famous for, it creates rips where disoriented baitfish become easy prey for dolphin, wahoo, sailfish, kingfish and tuna. In the summer months, flocks of birds are a dead giveaway for dolphinfish pushing frenzied bait to the surface. When that’s not going on, fish can be found trolling feather or jet head lures and plugs. A bite while trolling means it’s time to slow down and cast baits to catch other fish drawn to the same area. Sometimes this is met with spectacular results, especially for mahi, which tend to gather in numbers. Some of the most spectacular action on the humps comes from blackfin tuna. It can show up in spurts any time of year, but fall typically brings a push of 10-pound-plus tuna that can be incited into surface-feeding frenzies. Chumming up blackfins with pilchards is a very visual experience that allows even anglers armed with fly rods to hook up with multiple hard-fighting fish.

NOVEMBER 2016

As the tuna move toward the reefs with the late fall and winter baitfish migrations, the bigger fish begin to show up, and kite fishing becomes one of the preferred methods for teasing up fish 20 pounds and larger. The other fish that shows up to take advantage of baitfish from November through the winter is sailfish. There’s a reason why Islamorada is home to so many sailfish tournaments during the winter months. It can seem like everyone drops everything they’re doing for a chance to fly release flags. In fall and winter, sails move in to gorge on abundant ballyhoo around the reefs. This can present opportunities to anglers less than 5 miles from the docks off the islands of Islamorada. The 130- to 200-foot depths produce the most consistent bite where strong currents and changes in water color to a deep royal blue give away the edges and rips where sailfish hunt. Trolling or kite fishing the reefs can produce numerous fish in the 60-pound range when the bite is on. But on sunny days when the weather cooperates, it is possible to sight fish for sailfish inside the reefs in water as shallow as 20 or 30 feet. Even smaller boats can get in on this action. From the tower, crewmembers seek out the fish. When the alarm goes out, chum and baits are deployed. There’s really no technique more exciting. Anglers in the know await those bluebird skies on winter days when seeking out sailfish becomes as much hunting as it is fishing. And if all the offshore action isn’t enough to convince any angler to start making plans right now, fall also brings some of the biggest bonefish of the year to the Islamorada flats. Time it right, and you can be fishing the flats in the morning and trolling the bluewater in the afternoon. What more could you ask for?

THE ONLY DURABLE HIGH QUALITY ROD WRAP

Russ Lane: Bassmaster Elite Series™ Pro

“Winn overwraps help me as a tournament angler in so many ways. They’re great in all weather conditions. I don’t have to physically squeeze my rod during a cast as hard as I did with cork or EVA. That gives me a better degree of accuracy with less fatigue. Multiple color options also allow me to organize different rod actions and lengths using different colors. I honestly could never use a rod again without my Winn overwrap!”

By Mike Pehanich

I

believe this is the Golden Age of fishing tackle. For my money, the amazing quality and range of rods available to us today is clear evidence of that claim. Improvements in graphite quality, skeletal reel seats and lightweight braid-resistant guides have paved a path to conspicuous performance benefits, and rods conscientiously tailored to nearly every angling task are helping anglers execute specific techniques with a flourish. Yet, until recently, the seat of angler control—the handle—seemed stuck in the Dark Ages. Cork, a survivor from a bygone era, seemed like it would dominate rod handles forever, with EVA foam the only alternative material allowed any territorial claim. But progress has come, finally, to the rod handle. In recent years, alternative rod grip materials have hit the market including carbon fiber, a slick lightweight option; tough Kevlar tubing; composite cork, a denser and more durable cork-based material blend; and Syncork, a light and durable material with a rough-hewn appearance. Some have used shrinkwrap to give EVA foam a different look and feel, too. Color and design options have emerged, with even a “camo cork” available

now to rod builders. One of the biggest breakthroughs may have come two years ago when Winn Grips (www.winngrips.com), the Huntington Beach, California-based maker of grips for sports equipment, introduced its interchangeable grip system and rolled out a full line of handsomely designed rod grips made from its patented WinnDry material, which maintains its tacky feel in wet conditions and weather extremes. Early Winn prototypes were colorful and interesting, and they provided a hint of the performance benefits of ergonomic comfort and angler control that has come to characterize the grips today. Yet some thought early designs too similar to the golf grips that have made Winn a global leader in that field. Winn’s founder, aerospace engineering pioneer Dr. Ben Huang, took angler feedback to heart. Winn’s grip system has evolved into a versatile line of rod handle components. Rod makers, from leading brands to custom builders, have caught on quickly to the advantages of the grips. At ICAST 2016 in Orlando, Lew’s Fishing Tackle captured three Best of Show awards for products featuring Winn’s advanced polymer materials in rod handles and reel knobs. Lew’s, Kistler, Denali and others displayed new rod lines with Winn grips. Winn has introduced an element of “fashion” to fishing rods, too, by offering a broad range of bold colors and multi-colored and sometimes multi-textured designs that can complement tournament jerseys, boat colors and wraps, or represent a signature look or the colors of a favorite sports team. Winn’s quieter contribution to today’s tackle evolution could come in the emerging practice of “retrofitting” favorite old rods with Winn rod grips and in routinely fitting cork and EVA rod handles with a Winn “skin” in the form of Winn Superior Rod Wrap, a tape-like overwrap.

Center s SPEARFISHING TRAVEL

SHERI DAYE

A

s spearfishing continues to grow and capture people’s interest, so has the amount of travel related to spearfishing. The allure of exotic locations, different species, and the possibility of world records has spawned a new breed of traveler, and resorts and charters are happy to cater to this crowd. In Florida, there are live-aboard charters that take scuba divers to fertile grounds out of the lower Keys into the Gulf or the Dry Tortugas – such as Seaclusive Charters. There are also charters that cater to smaller groups of freediving spearfishers such as Killshot, Into the Blue, and more. The Keys are especially attractive to vacationers, as the scenery above the water can be just as interesting as below. In the Bahamas, resorts with marinas are well-equipped to handle divers, some of them weekend warriors coming by boat from Florida. The clear waters and beautiful marine life are a big draw. Bahamian law requires freediving-only and the use of either slings or polespears for spearfishing. Rather than being a deterrent, it’s created a new breed of divers who enjoy this simple and primitive form of hunting. The ability to add cracked conch or a lobster tail to a meal is a big bonus. Both coasts of the United States have a number of spearfishing charters to choose from as well. Divers can enjoy a change of scenery and try their luck at hunting white sea bass in the kelps of California, cobias off the rigs of Louisiana, stripers in the waters off Rhode Island, African Pompanos off the wrecks of Hatteras – all exciting catches. International travel has increased significantly in the past few years. Mexico, Panama, and Costa Rica are a big draw with desirable species such as Cubera Snappers, cobias, and tunas – depending on which coast. Fiji, Tahiti, Tonga, and Ascension Island have been yielding world record wahoos and tunas, drawing the more hard-core divers. Here’s some quick tips to make sure your travel is fun, safe, and productive: 1. Go with friends and watch out for each other - in the water and out.

2. Choose a reputable charter that specializes in spearing and ask the captain about fish and conditions. Make sure your skill level is up to par for that location. 3. Make sure you are properly equipped for the fish you are targeting and follow the law. Be aware of the local fishing regulations and limits. 4. Use a Sportube to pack your spearguns and use the wetsuits for padding. Tell TSA you have “fishing equipment” rather than using the word “speargun”. 5. Buy DAN insurance – they are a reputable agency known for covering divers, including evacuation services. For divers in search of adventure, traveling to different hunting grounds can yield the trip (and fish) of a lifetime. Life is short, so get out and enjoy it! DOUBLE BARREL POPPER

For anglers who enjoy pursuing bass on the fly and for the anglers that have interest in fly fishing for bass, now is the time to get on the water. Cooler nights and slightly shorter days bring a nice drop in water temps that often triggers bass into aggressive feeding patterns to beef up for winter. The result is some exciting topwater activity. Armed with poppers, I love to row anglers down local rivers armed with 6 weights and poppers targeting bankside structure for spotted bass. Takes are often aggressive followed with a nice acrobatic battle to the boat. I have been filling my popper box with the new Double Barrel Popper heads from Flymen Fishing Company. They generate loud glugs and can also be used in a number of creative ways to create your own desired style of topwater fishing. Hook: Thread: Eyes: Tail: Body:

Charleston’s November Fishing Forecast

C

harleston is a terrific place to fish in November. This month brings cool mornings, mild days, low humidity, and great fishing. The fish will go crazy this month as we will see the first frost. In November, trout and redfish are the main focus; and they will be hungry, as there will be less bait in the water. Therefore, redfish and trout will be very willing to eat artificial lures and flies with little hesitation. Fishing for trout can be all or nothing this time of year. The cooler weather and lack of bait will have trout schooled up and moving to find warm water and food. So, don’t be discouraged if you hit a few of your favorite trout spots and get nothing. However, when you do find a spot with trout, they will be hungry and in large numbers. On a good day, you may catch 30 to 50 fish in an hour or so. Try floating a DOA shrimp under a cork, or try a jig and grub on the bottom in your favorite color. It is important to remember, as the water cools down, you will need to fish slower! Because of the fish kill last winter, there may not be as many trout as in years past. Please handle these fish with care, try to release as many as

Fall is a great time for seatrout or reds on artificials and flies. This one was caught on a DOA Jerk bait. possible, and consider alternatives for dinner. Red fishing will be at its best in November. Redfish can tolerate the colder water better than the trout and all the bait fish. They will take advantage of the sluggish bait and clear water to hunt down anything they see. Redfish will be in large schools around low tide. Sight casting to them should be fantastic, as it will not be uncommon to see 100-plus fish in a school! Work the schools slowly and quietly.

With 200 or more eyes and lots of ears, they can see and hear very well and spook easily. However, if you get close enough to the school to cast a light artificial or fly, they will often eat anything you put in front of them. There is nothing more exciting than seeing a school of 100 redfish in the 5- to 15-pound range coming down the bank! A great way to spend the day on the water is to book one of the area’s great guides. Having fished in Charleston for nearly 21 years,

I am extremely knowledgeable and experienced in this area. As owner and operator of Shore Thang Charters, I would love to share my expertise with you on the water. Capt. Mark Phelps Shore Thang Charters www.ShoreThangCharters.com ShoreThangCharter@hotmail.com (843) 475-1274

t may be chilly with the occasional drizzle, but don’t be a turkey when it comes to fishing in November. Fall fishing in Charleston has plenty to offer and, with the right conditions, anglers have been known to gobble up a variety of species. One such fish is the black drum. Black drum are distinguished by their dull grey color and barbels below the jaw. Juveniles have vertical black stripes similar to sheepshead, but they eventually fade as they reach maturity length of 12 to 18 inches. As black drum are bottom feeders, the barbels help locate food, which consists of mollusks, crabs and shrimp. They feed along beaches and hard structures, which is why the Folly Pier is a reputable location to target black drum. The groins and pier pilings produce many bivalves upon which drum

2 CHARLESTON/COLUMBIA

feed. In fact, black drum have been known to wipe out entire clusters of oyster beds in a short amount of time. As far as bait setup, an angler has many choices. Shrimp and squid strips are most commonly used here on the pier. However, if you have the time and resources, a piece of blue crab will be an irresistible treat for black drum. Be sure to allow a few second’s time for the drum to consume the bait before setting the hook. Although they range greatly in size, South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) slot limit is 14 to 27 inches total length, with no more than five per person per day. The Waller Report

N

ovember is already here! In past years, this month has been one of the most productive and pleasant months in which to fish. Winter is coming, the water temperatures are dropping, and our inshore and reef species are eating well and putting on weight to get them through the winter months that will arrive shortly. There is still plenty of bait in the water including shrimp, mullet and minnows. However, once the cold winter water temperatures arrive, the bait will be harder to find. This month, sheepshead will be your best bet for a good fishing trip at low tide. If you are out on high water, trout and reds should be your target fish. Inshore fishing for sharks is usually over by now, but you may find a straggler here and there. Fiddlers work best for the sheepshead around docks and pilings that have some growth on them. A new dock may hold fish, but one that is covered in barnacles and oysters would be a better choice. We use a simple Carolina rig with a short leader of no more than 6 to 8 inches. Typically, we use a 1-ounce barrel weight, but other sizes will work just fine. The goal is for your rig to be straight down in the current when vertically fishing. On the higher tides, live shrimp or mullet, under a popping cork along the shoreline, should produce trout and reds. Casting grubs, trout tricks or ZMAN plastics will also work well this time of year. The reefs off the coast hold fish all year, and the cooler waters should trigger a good bite as well. We fish the nearshore reefs and do well with black sea bass, black drum, red drum, sheepshead, ladyfish, bluefish and weakfish this time of year. The same gear used inshore works fine on the reef, but you want to fish in the bottom of the water column. Later in the year like this, the surface activity one sees in the summer generally does not exist in the winter. The spades and Spanish have moved on to warmer or deeper waters by now. Watch for a forecast of light and variable winds for the best conditions and try to go in the morning for the calmest water. Tide does not matter on the reef, as long as there is movement one way or the other. Capt. Michael Waller | SaltFisher Charters www.saltfisher.com | (843) 224-8197 or | (843) 343-7538

Networking for

SUCCESS H

ave you ever wondered why some anglers are always more successful than others? There are several factors involved in the success of course, such as luck, experience, determination, local knowledge, weather conditions, moon phase, etc. But have you considered these people also are networking for success? They are connecting with their buddies and other anglers to f i n d out the latest information on what, where and how fish are biting. I’ve networked all my life as a salesperson, and it is the best vehicle for getting to the right place and successfully getting a sale. Networking for fishing success will also work. One of the best ways to get started is to find other successful anglers and ask them to share their secrets to catching more fish. You know these guys; they are the people that always have a great story to tell about all the fish they have been catching. Some anglers are a little reluctant, to say the least, to tell you exactly where they caught that big fish but will be willing to tell you general areas to find fish and to tell you what they have been using for bait unless it’s a secret formula or a handmade lure of a sort. Asking what species are biting is also important. Make a mental note of different angler’s stories and techniques and of the areas they are fishing in. Compile this information for your next trip to narrow down the area that you will have more confidence in. One of the best ways to get other anglers to share successes is to also share your successes with them. It seems to break the ice sometimes and lets them know it is a two- way street and that you are willing to give away a few secrets to get a few secrets.

Another great way to get some great tips is at local bait shops. The owners of the bait shops are always talking to the local anglers and guides that patronize their shops for their tackle, bait and gear. They get first-hand information of how the fishing is going and the latest lures and techniques for catching all the fish. They will also inform you of the areas that are the most productive right now and the local laws that govern fish sizes, limits and in some cases the seasons. Once you have gotten some information and you get on the water, look to the boats that are already fishing and ask them how they are doing. You’ll find that most anglers are more than happy to chat about their success that day. Almost every time I go on the water, I end up meeting a new friend with whom I can share my fishing experiences, and I get to hear some fantastic stories from them. One of my most successful ways of finding fish sometimes is watching other boats and where they are fishing. Just being observant but not trying to fish in the same spot has taught me where some of the most productive holes are. If I have seen a boat in the same places day after day, you can rest assured that they have been successful catching fish in that area. If I find that area not being fished the next time I go, I will stop and try my luck there. Fishing is not 100% luck as some people may lead you to think, but rather it is a lot of calculation and experience to be in the right place at the right time with the right bait fished in the right manner. Good luck and don’t forget to network for success. See you on the water!

November Fishing Forecast

N

ovember’s cool nights and mild days are some of the most popular and productive for inshore fishing in the Lowcountry. The redfish and sea trout bite will be in full swing as fish gorge themselves on plentiful schools of finger mullet and shrimp. The large flat to the north of the pier will continue to hold large schools of 5- to 10-pound redfish Ashley Columber with a and schooling trout. Live 2.7-pound sheepshead. finger mullet or fresh cut bait fished on a basic Carolina rig will be the best bet for trophy-size reds. The cool water temperatures of autumn result in an aggressive sea trout bite. Live shrimp fished under a cork is a simple, yet deadly effective method for these trout. November is typically one of the best months for flounder fishing at the pier with several of them weighing from 4 to 6 pounds in past years. If recent trends continue, the flounder will still be around and should hit on finger mullet or mud minnows. Basic lead-head grub jigs will produce trout and an occasional flounder, with yellow and chartreuse being the most popular colors. DOA shrimp fished with a popping cork is another effective artificial presentation during the fall. The rock pilings surrounding the pier will continue to hold sheepshead and black drum, with fresh mussels and fiddler crabs being the bait of choice. Lake Murray November Fishing Report

I

n the month of November, the water temperatures are pretty well cooled off, and the leaves are changing with the season. As the length of day continues to become much shorter, fish will be in full swing of their fall patterns. This is the time of year that SCE&G will typically draw the lake down. As of this writing, the level of the lake has yet to be determined. Regardless, in the midst of increased rainfall this fall, there has been quite a bit of current flowing through the lake, and fishing has picked up lake wide. With much schooling mid-lake last month, focus should still be on the main flow of the lake, around the mouths of creek arms and on both primary and secondary points, as well as steep banks, focusing on rock and hard-bottom areas. Schooling fish may not be as visible but will still be in the same areas. These fish will be best fished with subsurface techniques, especially from Dreher Island to the dam and around the mouths of the major creeks. Shallow fall patterns will be in full swing, with shallow resident fish much more active than in prior months, especially on the upper end of the lake and in the backs of the creeks where increased water flow has been draining in from the rain. On the upper reaches of the lake, from Dreher Island up river, and in the backs of main lake coves, where the water has more color, look for fish to be shallow. Techniques of choice will be slower techniques with crayfish and shad-mimicking baits. Good lures of choice are Ima squarebill crankbaits, Greenfish Spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, and Jigs, Soft Plastics or Finesse worms,

creature baits, tubes and beaver type baits, such as the Reins Punchin’ Predator, Craw Tube and Swamp Mover in a Natural or Green Pumpkin color. Target moving baits during cloudy or windy conditions, switching to areas of shade around laydowns, docks and overhanging trees as the day gets brighter. Focus on slower techniques in the same areas when fish are not as aggressive at times with lack of wind and abundant sunlight. Be sure to key on areas with rock or a hard bottom, as well as docks built on black floats. On the lower end of the lake, from Dreher Island to the dam, focus on slower moving bottom baits, such as a jig, shaky head or a dropshot in a Watermelon or Green Pumpkin color, especially during times with lack of wind. During conditions with wind, focus on suspending and moving baits like the IMA Flit, Ima Pinjack 200, Ima Beast Hunter, and even a large casting spoon like the Lake Fork or Ben Parker Spoon. At times, there will still be schooling fish, especially at the beginning of the month. During these times, focus on walking topwaters, like the IMA Skimmer or Ima Little Stick with a foil color and flash during sunny conditions, such as Chrome or Chrome Herring, and a non-flash color during cloudy conditions, like a Bone or Blueback Herring color; wakebaits like an IMA

Bone Floating Flit; Swimbaits such as the new Optimum Boom Boom Shad; and soft jerkbaits, like the Zoom Super Fluke or Optimum Victory tail in a Chrome or Sexy Shad color, especially if there is wind and during lowlight conditions. Don’t be afraid to throw a larger 6- or 7-inch Optimum Victory tail, to catch an above average fish. Rig it on either a 5/0 or 6/0 ewg hook with a jerk-pause retrieve or on a ½-ounce or ¾-ounce Scrounger with a constant retrieve. Be sure to key on the sides of flatter points with hard bottoms where there may be a drop or an ambush area. Points with these characteristics are typically marked with a hazard marker buoy warning boaters. This time of year on the lower end of the lake, position the boat over water as deep as 25 to 35 feet, casting toward the point. A Navionics chip in your graph, setting the shaded depth on your Humminbird (Press Menu twice, under Chart) to 20 feet, can be extremely helpful in locating ideal humps and points. Wind is also very important. Follow the wind from day to day, fishing points that have the most direct wind blowing on them. Paying attention to the wind can be the difference between a successful day and a difficult one this time of year. The month of November is when the bass are in full swing of their fall patterns and active in all water columns of the lake. This is a great month to catch fish just about any way you would like. Bass

COASTALANGLERMAG.COM • THEANGLERMAG.COM

CAM_CHAR_1116.indd 7

will be shallow on points, in the backs of creeks and pockets, and starting to show up in deeper, 25 to 35 foot areas off of points toward the end of the month. In the river and in the backs of creeks and coves where resident fish are more prevalent, fish could be as shallow as 6 inches. Be sure to focus on areas with bait and hardbottom areas. In the lower section of the lake, where bass are feeding on blueback herring, bass will be positioned shallow on long tapering points or in adjacent coves. Fish should be grouped up and ready to bite when you find them. Be patient, have several lure options on your deck, keep an open mind, and be willing to cover water. A great way to get out, enjoy the outdoors, and do a little fishing is to book a trip with one of the Lake Murray area guides. I am a certified Fisheries Biologist, United States Coast Guard Approved, a full-time largemouth bass guide, have fished fulltime and competitively for the past 10 years across the country on both the BASS and FLW trails, and have a lifetime of fishing experience. I offer a learning experience on multiple techniques of your choice, as well as tournament preparation, and/ or electronics education. I would love to share my knowledge with you on the water and enjoy a day of fishing. Let’s Get Back to

School G

rab some binoculars and head on out for some fun fishing! Striped bass in the Santee Cooper area tend to school up when cooler days begin to creep upon us. The striped bass, or striper, is a fish that is found primarily along the Atlantic coast. Stripers are typically native to saltwater but will migrate to freshwater streams and rivers to spawn. The egg of a striped bass must stay in constant motion for the eggs to hatch. During the beginning stages of a striper’s life, they will usually travel in schools. This allows for the big appetite of the fish to be fulfilled when the school comes in range of shad, herring or minnows. When the schools start to push onto bait, the bait will rise to the surface bringing the striper up with them. This, in turn, attracts gulls and other fish-eating birds to the area to partake in the feast. Some anglers practice birdwatching as a way to find the schools of fish, motor close to them, and cast directly into the school of bait and bass. Although this allows you to catch a good number of fish from the schoolers, some bigger sized striper will lie in wait for the bait to come to them. The bigger striped bass like to hang out on the edge of deep water. To catch a deeper water striper, I suggest heavier baits. My favorite is a 1 ½-ounce Spro bucktail jig in white or 10 CHARLESTON/COLUMBIA

CAM_CHAR_1116.indd 10

chartreuse. Jigging spoons or spinner combos would also work well for the deeper holes and walls.

NOVEMBER 2016

For schooling striped bass, I tend to use soft plastic lures ranging from 3 to 7 inches long. Gotcha soft plastics in the pearl color cast into the schools and slowly reeled back is my favorite way to catch a striped bass. Topwater lures, such as Zara spooks and most Rapala, are a great way to get good top-water hits with these fish. Some anglers also like to use minnow-imitating crankbaits or swimming spoons at certain depths to hook into a good fish. When fishing in the lakes for striped bass, there is also a possibility of catching a hybrid striped bass. The hybrid striped bass is a hybrid of a striped bass and a white bass. A hybrid can be identified by broken rather than solid horizontal stripes on its body. These fish will school with striped bass and will eat the same baits as a striped bass. Fishing with the same lures can typically catch both the striper and the hybrid on any given day. The hybrid striped bass, however, will give a better fight pound for pound than the striped bass. These fish are more aggressive eaters and will take bait hard. Anglers also like to troll for striper while scoping out the scene for birds or just to have a nice day on the water and catch a few fish. Some anglers

like to use heavy individual baits to attract the fish while others like to troll in style. Capt. Mack’s umbrella rigs are great for trolling in both deeper and shallower waters. When the targeted game fish is focused on bait fish schools, these rigs are perfect for attracting multiple fish to your lures. They can give total coverage depending on the weights and jigs. So, when out on the lake this winter, make sure to get back to school and bring out those binoculars. Look for the birds and the bait breaking the surface. Bring a couple of combos and drop a few lines in the water and have a blast catching dozens of striped bass and hybrid striped bass. Remember, it is the South Carolina fish for a reason. Come on down to Palmetto State Armory and check out our wide selection of lures, bucktails and many other fun things to catch the eye and catch the fish. If you have any questions about schooling striper, need help rigging up to go catch some deep water fish, or just want to chat and learn more, stop on by and we will be glad to chat and answer any questions you have. o the captains, volunteers, donors, our fellow MAD Chapter members and supporters from our inaugural event, the MAD Charleston Chapter would like to thank you for making our first event a huge success, and we hope to see you again this fall. November will be here soon, and our event cannot be a success without your support. This year, our target is 50 boats, but we are also looking for surf and pier captains. We have arranged to shuttle surf captains and their troops out to Morris Island for the day. We have also arranged with Charleston County Parks to allow troops to fish for free with a pier captain. If we can get 50 boats and 30 surf and pier captains this year, we will be providing close to 180 American Troops a day on the water. Volunteer registration opens mid-September, and Troop registration will open in October. One huge hurdle of our first event was getting a saltwater fishing license waiver for the Troops. Since our event is free to the military, we didn’t want to ask them to buy a license for one day. Without a waiver, our event could not have been held in South Carolina. With hard work from a board member, we were fortunate to get a waiver exempting our participating Troops. Mr. Alvin Taylor, of the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR), made this possible last year and for all of our future events. Last year, we started Friday’s Captains Meeting with a brief history of MAD, and a few rules were announced. In the crowd were two SCDNR officers who read and presented a Governor’s Proclamation declaring Saturday, November 14, 2015 as Military Appreciation Day in the State of South Carolina. We 12 CHARLESTON/COLUMBIA

CAM_CHAR_1116.indd 12

were very humbled to receive such an honor and thank Gov. Nikki Haley. Saturday morning, we had 34 boats providing 82 Troops with a cool and windy start. Our captains faced high northeast winds making fishing extremely difficult. Despite the challenge, at 7:04 am, we had our first report; one of the Troops had caught a 22-inch trout. Most captains were able to find the fish, but some Troops weren’t so lucky. Since this is not a tournament, it really didn’t matter. The Troops that didn’t catch fish were just as happy as the ones who did, and the stories of the sacrifices these service men and women make every day outweighed any of our big fish stories. During the day at our event site, Rivers Edge Marina, volunteers set up tables and chairs and passed the time playing cornhole. Midafternoon the Pioneer Smokers, our chefs for the evening meal, arrived. They set up their serving area, prepped the food and waited for the return of hungry anglers. Slowly captains and troops began arriving back at the Marina. After a blessing for everyone’s safe return, the chefs served us tender pulled pork, smoked beef brisket, green beans, Mike’s famous smoked mac n’cheese, homemade dirty rice and tater salad. And we are grateful that they’ll be cooking for us again this year. THANK YOU to our 2015 Supporters: Carolina Composites (Pioneer Boats), Rivers Edge Marina, SEATOW Charleston, The Pioneer Smokers, Charleston Sign & Banner, Prowess Sportfishing, West Marine, SC Sportsman Magazine, and Coastal Angler Magazine. Once again, thank you for your support of our United States of America Military Troops. These men and women put their lives on the line every day for us. Please remember to thank them and our Veterans each time you see them.

History of MAD

In February of 2006, a newspaper in Wilmington, NC published a story about restaurants that were refusing entry to a group of Marines who had just returned from Iraq and Afghanistan. Rodney Carroll, Dan Smith and John Polosky were outraged and decided to do something about it! Within a few weeks, they raised almost $1000. With the help of a donated van and a few marines, they set forth on a mission to change this policy and pay tribute to those who have served America. As they visited these restaurants and spent time with these young marines, they were overwhelmed with the desire to show appreciation for our true American Heroes and, thus, the idea for Military Appreciation Day was born! Within two short months, all of the planning for the first event was completed. On May 20, 2006 men and women from all five branches of the Armed Services arrived in Morehead City, NC for the First Annual Military Appreciation Day or MAD1. The 225 service men and women who ventured out in volunteer and

chartered vessels were greeted by pouring rain and howling winds, but the spirit of the day was not diminished as volunteers from North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia and Pennsylvania were on hand for one reason … One. Simple. THANKS!

Why MAD Is In Charleston

One of our Board Members is local to Charleston and remembers watching the Navy ships and submarines pass through the jetties. When he looked to participate in a local military appreciation event, there wasn’t one to be found. There were some tournaments, but since his fishing skills weren’t tournament level, he continued to search. Finally one was found…in Morehead City, NC, 350 miles away. So, he volunteered to take two Marines out on his boat. The event had over 100 boats that year, and they had over 500 troops participating. He was so impressed but then was disappointed. “Why am I towing my boat 6 hours to do this?” he thought. “Start one in Charleston? No, too much work.” He went back to Morehead City the next year and spoke to the event coordinators about starting an event in Charleston. Their answer surprised him. “Yes, that would be great,” they said. “Find some help.” So he did, and in November 2015, we had our first event which was a success with 34 boats and 82 Troops. November Pier and Surf Fishing By Jiggin’ Jerry

Spotted Seatrout

T

he habits of the spotted seatrout can be interesting, and knowing their tendencies will definitely aid the inshore angler in finding some of the larger of the species. For instance, spotted seatrout spawn from late April and early May through September in the Lowcountry; and due to their mating rituals, bigger females and males can be found if you know the locations of their spawning sites. Large quantities of young males averaging 9 to14 inches will gather at dusk and will begin making a drumming sound, which will echo through the estuaries attracting females. This will result in the appearance of some of the largest and oldest females in the area, and these females will be aggressive and hungry. From September to November, these large females and males will feed on croaker and a vast quantity of shrimp. (As an aside, their aggressive behavior towards the croaker is not just for food. The croaker is considered a threat to the spotted seatrout as it will feed on their trout eggs, and the seatrout will attack the croaker in defense of its spawning.) Of course, these trout are still feeding on finger mullet and mud minnows that are available, but it will be the shrimp that will fatten up these trout. The trout will get a large, thick back as well as thick, fat, round bellies which will increase their body weight greatly, giving an angler a chance to land what we refer to as a gator trout. Now that you are more

familiar with some of the seatrouts habits, it may help you to understand why November starts an exciting season for the inshore angler. This month is when the experienced inshore angler pulls out his favorite spinning rods used exclusively for throwing artificial lures. Typically, these rods are about 7 feet long, with a fishing line range from 8 to 12 lb. test. Some anglers will go even lighter, using 7-foot rods, with a fishing line range from 2 to 8 lb. test. The fishing reels used will be light and average from a 2,500 down to a 1,000 size (size references used by Shimano, Diawa and

some other reel manufacturers) or a 25 size down to a 10 (size references used by Pfluger and Quantum). The smaller the number, the smaller the reel, and the larger the number, the larger the reel. And now the fun begins! Inshore anglers will now be casting lures trying to trick and entice these spotted seatrout in striking a fake bait - the art of making an artificial lure look real in its dance, in its movement, in

Jerry’s 6lb. Trout its appearance. The fulfillment that an angler feels when he has successfully tricked and enticed one of these aggressive, fast predators in biting the lure becomes addictive. The anglers find themselves wanting to try more and more lures, testing their skills with each one, trying to find the right colors, styles, sizes and weights, always keeping their eyes open watching other anglers every chance they get to see what they are using and see if they are successful. All of a sudden we’re not just anglers, rather we’re inshore detectives. Yes, even I had to giggle for a minute. But if you have not experienced this yet, I’m speaking the truth. That’s what makes fishing for these fangtoothed critters all the more fun. So when you look down your list of lures, you want to try artificial shrimp, curly tail grubs, paddle tail grubs, flukes, buck tail jigs, stick baits - like Balsa Minnows - jointed floaters, rattlers, and so forth. Remember that it’s not just the lure that attracts the fish; it is also the operator of the lure.

COASTALANGLERMAG.COM • THEANGLERMAG.COM

CAM_CHAR_1116.indd 15

NOVEMBER 2016

Each lure has a certain number of techniques. Some lures require just reeling the lure in a steady pace. Other lures, like an artificial shrimp, require a fast, twitching motion, three quick counts and then allowing the lure to quickly drop towards the bottom, reeling in the slack and repeating the twitch again, bringing the shrimp back up and then allowing the shrimp to fall back down. This is a technique that can also be used with paddle tail grubs and curly tail grubs. Of course, it would take a number of pages to explain all the techniques involved with all these lures, but that would make it too easy for you inshore detectives. The fun of the sport is finding them out on your own. This also includes making up some of your own techniques that no other angler has ever considered. I hope this helps inspire you to go out, have a great time, and enjoy a one-onone contest between you and the fish. And just remember, until next time, good luck out there and have fun fishing! Z-Man Fishing Products In this day and age, finding consumer products - including fishing lures - that are made in the United States is increasingly difficult. Unfortunately, cheap labor has driven the manufacturing of most rods, reels, hooks, lures and lines overseas. At the same time, discriminating anglers still demand both performance and value when it comes time to select artificial lures. One company that has bucked the outsourcing trend and strived to provide top-notch lures that offer more bang-forthe-buck is Z-Man Fishing Products, based out of Ladson,SC. Though Z-Man is a relatively new name to most anglers, the company has actually been in business for over 30 years. Z-Man began as a manufacturer of silicone skirts and skirt-making materials used to make bass baits, operating mainly behind the scenes and catering to many of the world’s largest lure manufacturers. As the tackle industry evolved, Z-Man has adjusted its strategy and has worked hard to establish itself as a premium lure brand in both the fresh- and saltwater markets. Around 10 years ago, the company burst onto the scene with the introduction of the Original ChatterBait® brand bladed swim jig after that lure saw a tremendous surge in success on the national bass tournament scene. The ChatterBait has since cemented itself as a staple item among bass angles and is arguably responsible for more tournament winnings than any other lure in the last 10 years! More recently, Z-Man has been making a big splash in both freshand saltwater lure markets with its proprietary 10X Tough ElaZtech® soft plastics, which are all manufactured in its Ladson plant. Unlike traditional plastics, which are made from PVC, ElaZtech baits are very soft but extremely durable and are even able to withstand multiple strikes from toothy gamefish. Anglers have reported catching more than 200 fish on a single ElaZtech bait! Perhaps more importantly, while regular soft baits contain chemicals called phthalates that are potentially harmful to fish and humans, ElaZtech is 100% non-toxic. Today, you would be hard-pressed to find a serious angler who is not familiar with Z-Man baits. On the saltwater side, the durability of the ElaZtech material has made Z-Man’s line of Scented BaitZ, which are impregnated with a blend of baitfish scents, a top-seller among inshore anglers. While other soft baits are easily destroyed by toothy (and often pesky) saltwater species like bluefish, ElaZtech baits allow anglers targeting redfish, seatrout and flounder to keep catching rather than constantly re-baiting. With Z-Man based in the Lowcountry, local waters provide fertile testing grounds where company lure developers

16 CHARLESTON/COLUMBIA

CAM_CHAR_1116.indd 16

NOVEMBER 2016

can fine-tune new products (like the brand new EZ ShrimpZ) to ensure maximum effectiveness. In freshwater fisheries, Z-Man’s Ned Rig finesse system, which pairs small wormlike baits with light jigheads, has found its way into the tackle lockers of ardent bass anglers as an almost failsafe means of producing bites in tough fishing conditions and has brought ElaZtech into the limelight. The fact that the ElaZtech material itself is naturally buoyant allows lures like the Finesse TRD, Hula StickZ, and Finesse WormZ to stand up off the bottom at rest and attract strikes when other soft plastic baits will not. With the addition of a variety of worm, crawfish and baitfish profiles, there is now an ElaZtech bait for virtually every bass fishing application. Z-Man is headquartered just outside Charleston, where it operates its injection molding plant, warehouse and offices from a new 37,500 square-foot facility. In addition to its 30 full-time employees, Z-Man provides work for many more individuals throughout the Lowcountry. Another 40 part-time employees assist with packaging baits from their homes, and Z-Man also works closely with the South Carolina Vocational Rehabilitation Division to provide a steady flow of assembling and packaging work in its job training centers in Dorchester and Berkley counties. All-in-all, upwards of 100 South Carolinians may be engaged in selling, building and shipping Z-Man products on any given day! In the last three years, Z-Man’s business has grown dramatically, both domestically and internationally. In addition to supplying independent retailers - including local shops like Haddrell’s Point, The Charleston Angler and Palmetto State Armory - Z-Man also now serves many national retailers and chain stores including Bass Pro Shops, Cabela’s, Academy, Walmart and Dick’s, as well as multiple wholesale distributors. As anglers worldwide have learned about Z-Man’s incredibly durable soft plastic baits, its international business has also increased steadily; Z-Man now has distributors in over 30 countries on six continents and is the top-selling soft bait brand in Australia and New Zealand! What’s next for Z-Man? At the recent ICAST fishing tackle industry trade show in July, Z-Man launched a record 17 new products, including a variety of new soft plastic profiles, jigheads and skirted jigs. If that’s any indication of what’s to come, then expect plenty more innovative, quality, cutting-edge, South Carolina-made new fishing lures coming down the pipe!

FISH & FISHING

PUTTING THE PIECES TOGETHER MARK SOSIN

S

uccessful fishing necks down to two things. The first challenge focuses on finding the species you are planning to catch, and the second phase centers on getting them to eat a bait or strike an artificial. Everybody may know that, but not all anglers achieve their goals on the water. The key lies in planning your day and working your plan. Did you ever wonder why leading guides almost always find and catch fish every time they are on the water. There’s no mystery or deep, dark secret. They know the area they fish, they understand the preferences of the species they seek, and they plan their day in advance. If you fish the same waters repeatedly, you should have a pretty fair idea of where your quarry should be based on the tide, water temperature, bait concentrations and basic experience. Decide before you leave the dock where you plan to start and the next three or four spots if the first one doesn’t pan out. It’s also important to spend sufficient time in each location to make sure you give it a fair chance to produce results. Regardless if you are new to the area or fish there all the time, there are basic approaches you should constantly remember. If you can learn the depth where fish were caught recently, chances are they will still be lingering at that depth even if you don’t know the precise spot. During new and full moons, if you fish the shallows, the tides will be higher and lower. On incoming water, fish will push up shallower and then drop off the flat during the last of the outgoing tide. If you see sharks cruising a flat, that’s a good indication of the depth you should be looking for

fish. For those who prefer trolling, try a zigzag course working at a 45-degree angle deeper and then shallower until you start getting strikes. On the offshore grounds, look for weedlines, debris, currents, birds, baitfish and anything else out of the ordinary. Troll with the current, against the current, from deep to shallow, and shallow to deep until you hit paydirt. Remember the theory of “seats in a restaurant.” Fish tend to hold in very specific places. Even if you catch one, another will replace it shortly. That means you need to keep going back to exact spots where you caught fish in the past. Too many anglers simply fish at random without studying the area they plan to fish. Even if you’ve never fished those waters before, study the currents, the dropoffs and necks of a funnel where water flows in an out in channels. Finally, if you use natural bait, make sure it is fresh and change it frequently so it constantly gives off maximum odor. Live bait should be frisky. Replace it every 15 or 20 minutes. If you prefer artificials, stick with the basics and with lures that have caught fish in the past. You can try new lures when you find the fish and are having a banner day. The price of success is eternal vigilance on the water. Stay alert, follow a game plan, and you should be smiling at the end of the day. BETTER DECISIONS.

By Christina Weber

I

’m going to share some packing tips that’ll help you prepare to kayak fish in remote locations where you’ll rely on what you brought and someone else’s kayak… where you’ll fish on water you know very little about, in an area so remote that once you’re there, you’re there. If you’re like me, you’ll fish from a Hobie Mirage for roosterfish, a fish with an aggressive attitude and a killer Mohawk. When travelling it can be beneficial to share baggage expenses with a friend. We made our own 8’6’’ rod tube that was wide enough to hold eight rods and two gaffs. I use a large dry bag backpack for all my kayak accessories: extra rod tube extenders, gear ties, PFD, headlamp, pliers, cutters, extra dry bags, sunscreen, my TackleWebs, rain gear and other useful tools. Tackle takes up an entire suitcase with lures, hooks, leader and tackle boxes. It doesn’t sound like much until you lay everything out. Terminal tackle has to be checked baggage. I pack my reels in a Pelican case. I use it as a carry on. It also holds my laptop/POV camera. By the time this guy is packed, there isn’t much space, but it gets the job done. You might think your reels can handle the abuse of travel, but all that rattling and banging has the potential to loosen screws and drags. Plus, I’m not comfortable with the thought of losing thousands of dollars in gear. Occasionally I’ve been forced to check my reels. Prepare for the possibility.

raveling across the country for the last three years with the Bassmaster Elite Series has led me to some amazing fishing destinations. I’ve been about as far as one can go in every direction in the United States and have gotten to experience some great fishing. Although I don’t have a definitive answer on where my favorite place to fish is, I will say that without a doubt my favorite fish to target are big northern smallmouth bass. Let’s talk about some of the places I’ve been and what makes the places and the

Lakes. My next experience with northern smallies was on the St. Lawrence River in upstate New York. The Thousand Islands area is a beautiful part of the country and should be on every bass fisherman’s bucket list. The river is full of fish, and a lot of people there seem to fish more for other species so the smallmouth are quite catchable. A little ways away on Lake Ontario is the home of more willing smallmouth. Next on the list is Lake St. Clair in Michigan. St. Clair is

Chums’ new Downstream waterproof bag is a medium-sized shoulder bag or fanny pack for folks who enjoy the outdoors, especially if you like water sports and fishing. From offshore boaters to kayakers and stand-up paddleboarders, this 6” x 10” x 4.5” travel bag is designed to protect your gear against the elements encountered while on your adventure. It has a roll-top closure that fastens at both ends and is completely airtight and waterproof. The material is very durable, made of double sided TPU-coated nylon and has waterproof RF welded seams. A front pocket with YKK water-resistant zipper is handy for your sunscreen or lip balm and has a drain hole for quick drying. The Downstream is a smart choice for boaters, anglers, stand-up paddle boarders and kayakers in need of a personal bag with easy access and a variety of wearable options. Keep your gear dry with Chums’ new line of accessory cases. Visit www. chums.com or your favorite specialty outdoor retailer to get yours today. Chums came about in 1983 when a Colorado River guide sought a simple way to keep his sunglasses out of the river. Through this innovative idea, the Chums original cotton eyeglasses retainer was born. More than thirty years later, Chums is now a global brand that offers a wide range of outdoor products and apparel. fisheries so special. My very first experience with the Great Lakes was at the Elite Series AOY championship in 2014 in Escanaba, Mich. I ended up finishing that tournament in ninth place and qualified for my first Bassmaster Classic. I was super impressed with the place as soon as I rolled into town. Everyone in Escanaba was very nice and hospitable, which is something you don’t find everywhere these days. It is a nice quiet town much like the Tennessee town I was raised in, with great places to eat and nice places to stay. As far as the fishery, just take a look at the weights from that tournament and they will speak for themselves. Little Bay and Big Bay de Noc are chock-full of big smallmouth as well as walleye, pike, perch and everything else you would expect to find in the Great

unique because you can either fish in the lake, which is great, or you can fish one of the rivers that flows into or out of the lake, which is what I chose to do when I was there. In all these places, smallmouth bass will absolutely chew a small soft plastic bait on a Mustad dropshot hook fished on a MHX EPS 81MLXF rod from Mud Hole Custom Tackle. Catching these fish requires good electronics, so I rely heavily on my Raymarine units to locate the big schools. As I was writing this last week, I got thinking I needed to go and pay those smallmouth a visit. My dad and I jumped in the car, drove to Lake Michigan and had a ball. I would encourage you to do the same before it gets too cold!

here’s stocking trout, and then there’s unintentionally releasing 80,000 rainbow trout into the open ocean. In the short-term, recreational anglers will be the beneficiaries of a $1.5 million accident at a Danish fish farm. Reuters reports that a cargo vessel collided with fish farm nets between Danish Islands in the Baltic Sea on Oct. 11. The fish, which were bound for the slaughterhouse within a few days’ time, weighed about 6.6 pounds each. Recreational anglers are being encouraged to get out on the fjord and catch as many of the escapees as possible. Authorities are concerned the jailbreak could have disastrous consequences for the native sea-run rainbow trout populations. According to the Associated Press report, wild populations are preparing to run up the rivers to spawn right now, and their eggs would make tasty morsels for the farmed fish. Other Danish biologists have dismissed the threat as minimal because the farmed trout are unprepared for life in the wild and are conditioned to heavy feedings. There is a good chance the fish will die of starvation or be consumed by larger predators before they are able to do much damage. One thing is for sure, if there are Walmarts in Denmark, the shelves will be emptied of spinners, salmon eggs, Powerbait and canned corn. There isn’t a stocked trout in the world that can resist Green Giant Niblets.

PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT PIRANA FISHING LURES With its patented Jet Trail System, Pirana Fishing Lures has given the fishing world one of those “why didn’t someone think of this before” moments. Pirana has taken proven elements of highly successful crankbaits and jerkbaits and given them a new feature that is the most innovative and effective to hit the market in years. These lures leave a bubble trail, an enticement that draws in predatory fish and triggers them to strike. The effectiveness of bubble trails is well documented. Bluewater anglers troll jet head lures. Bass anglers fish gurglers and buzzbaits. Pirana’s Jet Trail System brings the same concept to crankbaits and jerkbaits. With an open mouth and gill slots along the lure’s sides, water is forced through the lure on retrieve to create the jet trail. Pirana has also put a lot into the details. These lures have a finely tuned wobble and dive as well as a rattle chamber for additional noise. Bright red gills, holographic silver eyes, a hex-scale pattern and a high-gloss finish complete the package. The lasting trail of bubbles, however, is what sets them apart. Pirana’s latest, which should hit the market soon, is the new and improved P200, which has a lip above the mouth opening. Whether the target species are redfish, seatrout and snook inshore or largemouth and smallmouth bass or trout in freshwater, anything that will eat a plug will be more likely to eat one with a jet trail. PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT UNDERWATER FISH LIGHT If you live on the water or have ever cruised any local canals or shorelines at night, you’ve probably seen how effective and widespread Underwater Fish Light’s products are. They seem to be just about everywhere, and are almost always loaded with fish. Their classic Natural Green lights look amazing in any waterway, but they recently released a new line of Vibrant Green underwater lights that illuminate the water with a richer green color that really stands out from the crowd. In addition to the unique look, these lights are also 50 percent brighter than the classic systems and are perfect for those looking to “out glow” their neighbors. Of course these new lights come backed by the same guarantees that Underwater Fish Light is famous for, including their well known “Fish Guaranteed or Your Money Back” promise. You can try the new Vibrant Green systems or any of their other models for sixty nights in your own waterway, and if you’re not thrilled with the performance of the light, you can return it for a full refund. Obviously they don’t get too many returns. There is also a new line of Caribbean Blue underwater lights that look incredible in clear waterways, but customers outside of the Florida Keys should opt for either the Natural Green or Vibrant Green, as these will look the best in murkier waters. With a 3-year warranty and money back guarantee, you can’t go wrong with Underwater Fish Light. Visit them online at www.FishLight.com or call 1-855-FISH-LIGHT for more information.

PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT INHIBITOR VCI PRO CHIPS FOR CORROSION PROTECTION Protecting your fishing gear from rust and corrosion has never been easier, or more effective. The Inhibitor VCI offers unrivaled corrosion and rust prevention to protect lures, hooks, reels and more. Fishing tackle is a magnet for rust and corrosion. Many people do not fully appreciate the money and time avid anglers put into building their collection of lures. Rust will damage hooks, split rings and the body of the lure. With VCI Pro Chips you can make sure you never lose any of your fishing equipment to rust. Saltwater speeds up rust and corrosion; protect your fishing tackle from saltwater. Inhibitor VCI Pro Chips are a safe, easy and economical way to ensure your fishing tackle, tool boxes, small part bins and any other small metal items stay rust free. Each chip is treated on both sides with Volatile Corrosion Inhibitors that release a non-toxic vapor to blend with moisture and oxygen and stop rust and corrosion. The special vapors penetrate into the smallest cracks or crevices, providing total protection in marine environments. There is no scent residue. Fish will never know you are rust free! With Inhibitor rust prevention products, even saltwater cannot cause your fishing tackle to rust or corrode. They are great for parts bins and tool boxes at home, too. It works on all ferrous and non-ferrous metals: brass, bronze, copper, aluminum, steel, and stainless steel. Visit www.theinhibitor.com to get your 20-pack of VCI Pro Chips for only $5.99.
