By Capt. Terry Fisher

ast August, I accepted an invitation to join Wayne Hasson and his son, Davis, on a trip to the Jardines de la Reina (Gardens of the Queen) off the southern coast of Cuba. Wayne is the president of Aggressor and Dancer Fleets International, a fleet of live-aboard yachts that operate worldwide. Wayne had contracted to franchise a boat to the Cuban group, Avalon Dive and Fishing Centers. One purpose of the trip was to assess current Avalon Dive operations prior to putting an Aggressor boat in service in Cuban waters. This was an opportunity of a lifetime to experience diving and fly-fishing these virgin waters, which until recently was prohibited to most U. S. citizens. We were traveling under a licensed educational program, Oceans for Youth Foundation. The trip was 10 days and nine nights. The first two days and nights in Havana provided interaction with Cuban youths, their parents and local marine officials so as to learn their perspectives and to share ours on marine conservation and stewardship. Naturally, we found time to enjoy their unique city and culture through food, music and drinks prior to departing to the Port of Jucaro to begin the dive and fishing segment of the trip. On day three, we boarded the Avalon II, a state-of-the-art, 10-cabin, live-a-board diving and fishing vessel. We began the five-hour, 60mile trek to one of the largest marine parks in the Caribbean, the Jardines de la Reina, named by Christopher Columbus to honor Queen Isabel of Spain. My excitement mounted as we boarded, with Wayne’s promise that a world-class fishery would be my home for the next seven days. The diving proved to be world class as well. Davis and I set out at the end of each day to drag lines behind a Zodiac for jacks, permit and other species. While multiple fishing opportunities

Catch all three for a “Slam.” Since I live and guide in southwest Florida, I am blessed with lots of tarpon and permit. Therefore, my target was bonefish! Even though I have fished Little Cayman, Cayman Islands and Bahamas, I’ve never experienced the thrill of catching a bonefish. Catching one on the fly would be awesome. My fishing guide proved to be shadowed knowledgeable as to times, locations and patterns me on his last day. He got the video and pictures to throw. THE ONLY DURABLE HIGH QUALITY ROD WRAP

Russ Lane: Bassmaster Elite Series™ Pro

“Winn overwraps help me as a tournament angler in so many ways. They’re great in all weather conditions. I don’t have to physically squeeze my rod during a cast as hard as I did with cork or EVA. That gives me a better degree of accuracy with less fatigue. Multiple color options also allow me to organize different rod actions and lengths using different colors. I honestly could never use a rod again without my Winn overwrap!”

n the minds of many traditional bass anglers, the subject of fly fishing is limited to topwater fishing with cork-bodied poppers and deer hair bass bugs. The truth of the matter is, wherever and whenever bass can be caught, they can be caught on flies. At first glance, fly fishing seems complicated and difficult, but with a few new skills, minimal equipment and a handful of flies, bass anglers can find a new way to enjoy something that they already love. Fly fishing for bass is as much a state of mind as it is a sport. Fly fishers usually have different standards and expectations. For example, due to the nature of the equipment, smaller fish seem large and larger fish seem huge. While a 15-incher caught on heavy baitcasting equipment might not seem like much, the same fish battled on a 7-weight fly rod is memorable. Certainly big fish are taken on flies, but landing a bass over 7 pounds is a tall order. Fly Lines The fly line is the life-blood of the outfit. Line weights commonly range from 2 to 12, and the line size determines the rod and reel size. A 2-weight outfit would be the choice for the smallest trout streams, using tiny flies. A 12-weight would match up well with large tarpon. For bass and light saltwater, a 7- or 8-weight is perfect. Choose a weight-forward line (WF), and for most of your fishing, a floating line will serve you well. If budget allows, add an intermediate sink-tip line for getting your fly deeper or for fishing in choppy conditions. Another consideration is air/ water temperature Another consideration is air and water temperature. If you fish mostly in warm weather that never gets below the 70s, I strongly recommend a “Tropical” line. The core of the line is stiffer and will keep its integrity in a subtropical climate, whereas a Dacron core becomes limp and more difficult to cast. A standard Dacron core line works well in cooler water.

very important. In bass fishing, rarely does a fish pull the line off the reel and get into the backing. Even a larger bass will never really test your drag. Choose a matched-size large arbor reel with a pleasant “click,” and you are good to go. Leaders Whether you tie them or buy them, the tapered leader is the most fragile connection to the fish. An 8-foot, 15-pound-test leader will work for most of your bass fishing. Tie your own using the following formula with uni-to-uni or surgeons knots: 4 feet of 40-pound test, 1.5 feet of 30-pound test, 1.5 feet of 20-pound test, and 1 foot of 15-pound test. Mono should be used when fishing surface flies, while fluorocarbon is great for getting sinking flies down faster. Flies Assemble your fly box to cover the water column. Cork bodied poppers and deer hair bugs will handle the topwater action and can be tied or purchased with weed guards. Un-weighted shad or bluegill imitations and swimming frog patterns cover the mid depths of 1 to 4 feet, where I catch most of my best fish. The dog days of summer will find me plying the depths in 4 to 8 feet with heavily weighted Clouser minnows and worm flies. My favorite all-around bass fly is the StrawBoss, a versatile bucktail fly that can be tied to mimic a swimming frog, baitfish or crawfish. When fishing topwater, the strike is obvious, but when fishing subsurface, it is important to keep your rod-tip in or near the water. As you strip the fly you will feel resistance and a “strip set” will drive the hook home. Good traditional bass fishers usually transition well into fly fishing. Slow your pace, learn to cast efficiently, and use your bass fishing instincts in a new way. I think you will enjoy it.

Fly Rods A good quality 9-foot, 7- or 8-weight rod will do it. If you tend to throw Joe Mahler is a fly fishing author, illustrator and a leading fly casting larger flies and fish larger, more open waters or heavy cover, go with the instructor from Fort Myers, Fla. Contact Joe to purchase flies or schedule 8-weight outfit. Some shorter, beefier rods are marketed as bass rods, but casting instruction through www.joemahler.com or by phone at (239) 898those are special-purpose rods that will be more difficult for the novice to 0325. handle. Fly Reels In fly fishing for bass, the reel plays less of a role than it does in saltwater fishing. With quarry like bonefish or tarpon, the drag system is 8

O

I also use a lot of artificial baits including topwater and soft-plastic artificials. Zara Spook topwater plugs are my favorite in a chartreuse/ black, or white/red. The topwater bite for redfish and trout during October can be some of the best of the year. My go-to soft plastic is the Berkley Gulp 3-inch Shrimp in new penny or the Berkley Gulp Mantis Shrimp in new penny with a chartreuse tail. Usually I’ll use a 1/8- or ½-ounce jig head depending on the scenario. Fly fishing is my favorite way to target fish here in the Lowcountry because we are constantly sight fishing throughout the day. What I love most about fly fishing this time of year is the water is a lot cleaner and you can see fish better all the way through changing tides. The redfish are very aggressive in October and do not hesitate to eat the wad of feathers at the end of your fly line. These aggressive fish allow you to make easier presentations because they are constantly looking for food. I’ve had countless days in October when an angler makes the cast and the fish eats the fly before he even has time to strip! My preferred setup is an 8-weight with floating line and about a 9- or 10-foot tapered fluorocarbon leader to keep you safe from oysters and spartina grass. When choosing flies, match the hatch by using lighter natural-colored shrimp flies during low tides and darker colored crab flies during the flood tides. Make sure all your fly patterns have a stout weed guard to keep the fly from hooking oysters and grass. Bay Street Outfitters in Beaufort, S.C. has a giant selection of flies, lines, leaders, rods, reels and everything you need for fly fishing in the Lowcountry. I cannot even begin to explain how excited I am that fall is finally here! Enjoy time on the water in October; I promise you won’t be disappointed.

ctober is by far my favorite month of the year for inshore fishing here in the Lowcountry of Beaufort and Hilton Head, S.C. As the temperature starts to drop and the spartina grass turns from green to brown, it’s Mother Nature’s sign that great fishing is ahead. I was born and raised on the waters of the Lowcountry. One thing I’ve learned over a lifetime of fishing here is that October can be some of the best fishing of year for redfish, speckled sea trout and flounder. What makes October such a good month? Well, there are a number of stars that align during October including dropping air temperature, dropping water temperature, clearer water, and most of all an abundance of shrimp in the water. October is a month when inshore fish start to feel winter coming and gorge on shrimp non-stop, filling up for a long cold winter. With a water temp from 68 to 75 degrees, it allows the fishing to be consistent throughout the entire day because it doesn’t get too hot or too cold. And the air temperature stays between 60 and 80 degrees, which is perfect for an 8-hour day on the water. The wind seems to lay down, and we have a lot more good weather days. One of my favorite styles of fishing is sight fishing, and October can provide some of the best action, whether it’s a school of redfish crushing shrimp on a mud flat or aggressively tailing looking for fiddler crabs on the flood tide. When light tackle fishing, we are targeting a variety of species throughout the day. With the abundance of shrimp, we are mostly using shrimp-style baits unless fishing for bull reds in the deeper water. My go-to tactic in October when using live bait is a Cajun Thunder popping cork rigged with about an 18-inch fluorocarbon leader, Capt. Owen Plair is an Orvis-endorsed guide operating out of depending on water depth, split shot in the middle of the leader to keep the shrimp down, a 2/0 hook, and live shrimp. This setup is deadly Bay Street Outfitters in Beaufort, S.C. See them online at www. along the grass and oyster beds on a falling or rising tide. The sound baystreetoutfitters.com. of the cork mimics a live shrimp popping and will attract redfish, trout and flounder. Allowing the bait to drift within strike zones of the fish For More Inshore Fishing in Hilton Head go to is the key to live bait fishing. Mud minnows also work well in October when fishing rising and falling tides in the marsh. COASTALANGLERFISHING.COM COASTALANGLERMAG.COM • THEANGLERMAG.COM

BLEED TRIM

Seeking out productive locations can be pretty simple. Find a live bottom in the depth I mentioned, and you are going to find fish. A lot of people like to target them this time of the year on the beaches, particularly around jetties and inlets where bait is thick. These areas tend to develop tide lines during tide changes, and fishing the clean side of the water can result in some great catches. I have always preferred to fish schools of bait By Englis Glover along the beach, running and gunning and trolling the outside areas of these schools. Typically, the biggest females hang out on the edges chewing on a buffet of bait. One of the great things about targeting mercury missiles is you can do it from any size boat if you pick your day carefully. It is very important, no matter the boat size, that you have good rod holders. I like to fish a max of five rods with live bait and will fish three or four if it is rough. It does not take a lot of baits in the water to ignite a bite. But a spread of good live baits can produce the best results. Typically the best bait is the most accessible bait. From mullet and bluefish to the popular menhaden, they all work great. The plus to a bigger bait is they are hearty and will last longer on the hook. Having good live bait will increase your success exponentially. In cases when I cannot find live bait, I have great success with cigar minnows and Boston mackerel. These baits troll best with a jig head for a nose hook to keep them from spinning while trolling. I always take the bait and bend and flex it to make sure it looks as lively as possible. I have also added legal-size Spanish mackerel to the spread. They produce some big fish. These also troll better with a jig head for a nose hook, and I try to include two or three stinger hooks in my rig to help eliminate a miss on a short strike. Remember, colder mornings can make bait difficult to find on the surface this time of year, so come prepared with some frozen bait on the boat. November and December bring in the windy season as well as marlin. In the Guanacaste area the wind will start blowing sometime in November but about 95% of the time we can avoid it. Normally the wind will start in the middle to late in the month. That doesn’t affect the fish but it does affect the comfort of the charter clients. The drop-off comes in close to Punta Guiones so we can fish closer to land and still be in productive water. The mountains are also taller to the south so they help block the offshore wind. I always recommend that the clients book their fishing days early in their stay so that in the event of high winds, and if I have open dates, we can move their trip back in hopes of better conditions. The sailfish are always here but the winter time marlin fishing should start in late November and carry on through until the first part of April. There should be blue marlin and striped marlin with the occasional black marlin thrown in the mix. My best

day of marlin fishing out of Flamingo was in December when we released 5 out of 6 blue marlin one day and they were all 375#-550#. This is also a great time of the year for a grand slam (3 billfish species in one day). The inshore fishing for Roosterfish, Mackerel, Amberjack and Cubera Snapper should be pretty good as well. If anyone tends to get sea sick they can get Transderm Scop patches from their doctor in the US http:// www.transdermscop.com/. I have never seen anyone get sea sick using a patch that was properly applied the night before fishing. Capt. KAYAKFISHING By Pablo Hein

November and December is the best time for fishing in the Nicoya peninsula. Better weather and smaller waves will bring big schools of sardines back to the beach, bringing lots of hungry predators behind like Roosterfish, Cubera Snapper and Snook. Kayak fishing in November and December is excellent for top water fishing lovers, glassy mornings with hungry fish around is the perfect combination to cast all kinds of poppers. Big Jacks, Spanish Mackerel and Roosterfish like to hunt from the very early morning, that is why we recommend to start fishing at sunrise.

FISH ≈ DIVE ≈ SNORKEL ≈ CRUISE

Also kayak fishing during November and December is the easiest of the year, hopefully fish will come and stay close to the beach which is perfect for us, paddling only hundreds of meters to find a lot of action is excellent for beginners and groups. Contact us and book your kayak fishing tours before it’s too late, December is very busy around Santa Teresa and Mal Pais. Lodging must be booked in advance, same with fishing tours. Remember it’s the best of the year!!! Pablo Hein Sea Kayak Adventures www.pescatica.com pescatica@yahoo.com

2016 Student Scholarship Grants Program Science and Development Program - FECOP Gray FishTag Research - FECOP Science Collaborative Alliance Gray FishTag Research (GFR) and The Costa Rican Fishing Federation (FECOP) collaborative alliance to strengthen the scientific research in the Costa Rican sport fisheries is now underway. The objective of this united initiative is to support the conservation and sound fishery management of sport-fishing resources in Costa Rica through the implementation of joint research projects and providing important data to the sport fishing sector and the fishing authority. The first collaborative effort, the support of complementary scientific research through a scholarship program was launched in August of 2016. Funds from FECOP was made available to support one undergraduate and two graduate students from the University of Costa Rica. The students received training about fish tagging and research by GFR and its lead scientist Mr. Travis Moore. The program is also supported by voluntary professional fishermen from the charter fleets. These professionals with their local knowledge and expertise are well committed and will provide access to the fish and ensure high rate of sample collection. Costa Rican vibrant sport fisheries are key to the country’s economy, providing thousands of jobs and generating social and economic development in coastal communities. Healthy and sustainable fisheries of a number of oceanic and coastal species are key to support the sport fishing economy. Scientific knowledge on the biology and ecology of fish species such as sailfish, marlins, tuna, mahimahi, rooster fish, snook, snappers and groupers among several others is essential to inform good fisheries

management measures and improve resource conservation. Yet very little is scientific information on these species a situation that is challenging the conservation of the Costa Rican fisheries. AREAS OF COLLABORATION These are the initial areas of collaboration between the two organizations. 1. Tagging of sport fishing species in partnership with the charter boat fleet in Costa Rica and individual sport fishing boats utilizing the GFR model. 2. Collaborative data analysis, report preparation including scientific publication of research results. 3. Coordinated joint fundraising activities to provide the financial resources for the development of research projects. RESEARCH AREAS In 2016, the Science and Development Program will receive scholarship applications and research proposals in the following areas: 1. Marine food web dynamics and feeding habits of sport fishing target species (sailfish, marlins, tuna, mahi-mahi, roosterfish, snook, snapper and groupers) 2. Genetics analysis – stock identification and geographical distribution Additional research areas may be considered depending on the merits and pertinence of the proposal. Proposed research need to be completed within the time of the duration of the research grant (six months or one year). The future of the program The hope and expectation of the program is also that it can continue to grow to where the areas of collaboration evolve other topics, and where specific research projects may be added as needed. different. These devices do not drift, and for that reason do not transfer marine life from one location to another in an unnatural fashion. In truth, the devices used for sport fishing really simply enhance an existing sea mount which is a natural structure. These devices cannot legally be used by commercial fishing boats. All bill fishing done on these sea mounts is strictly catch and release as is all such fishing in Costa Rica. Although there is still action on the sea mounts through the “high season”, most fishing will be done in the more traditional manner for sail fish and local marlin.

In the past we have called them “FADs” as in “Fish Aggregation Device”. We have discovered that this is being confused with a completely different type of device. One used by commercial boats and particularly purse seine boats for tuna. These devices are free floating and drift with the currents. They are equipped with GPS and transducer (fish finder) which can be remotely monitored. With this set up, the tuna people can both attract bait fish, and know when a school of tuna are in attendance. It is then simple to send a boat, and net the school. Larry Drivon Maverick Yachts Costa Rica These devices are not legal in Costa Rican waters for commercial tuna boats. They are typically deployed in the currents off South America and drift north bringing small fish and other aquatic life not usually found in this area to us. This can create environmental problems Great close up of a black marlin. among other things. The aggregating devices Photo Credit: Will Drost used for sport fishing are

best shot is probably December. In addition to bill fish, there should be sufficient mahi, wahoo, tuna and bottom fish to keep folks happy. If you do boat one of these delicacies, most local eating spots have a “you hook um, we cook um” policy. Never fresher. Although the rooster fish are resident year around, clean water brings the bait in shore turning on the rooster bite. Flat water is the rule with the big rains behind us, and you can add off shore comfortable boating to the great fishing and world class adventures found here in Costa Rica.

As predicted, the yellow fin tuna showed up in big numbers. Although in smaller numbers the tuna will hang around. The big news is the beginning of the big annual sail fish bite off the Pacific Coast. From Guatemala to Panama the sail fishing is expected to be red hot over the next few months. While November is commonly slow, December can be one of the best months for sail fish with a liberal sprinkling of blue, black and striped marlin. It is uncommon but not rare to see a Grand Slam this time of year. Larry Drivon As the rains slack off blue water Maverick Yachts Costa Rica is seen closer to shore, and the fish come with it. November marks the end of rainy season & start of the high dry season here on the central Pacific where smooth seas and sunny skies are the norm. It also marks the season influx of tourists into the area so be sure to start booking early as good boats book up far in advance. Mahi mahi (dorado) should be very plentiful around color changes just a short distance offshore, as this is usually the peak time for them before their numbers begin to taper off around year end. Last year we had a pretty bad showing of them probably from the lack of rain in October, but this year looks to be plenty of rain pushing dirty water and wood out of the rivers to form the color changes and trash line the dorado accumulate on. Further offshore, expect sailfish numbers begin to rise as they begin their yearly migration into the area in big numbers, and by January sailfish season should be in full swing getting 20+ bites every day. We have a very good run of blue and striped marlin

here from October to December, giving you an excellent chance to hook up with one of these prize catches known for their strength and endurance. We have had a great year for yellowfin tuna, daily consistent for over a year now. Hopefully this continues as they provide great fun action offshore with a tough fight. Plus, our guests are always happy to take home a few bags of fresh tuna. Expect inshore fishing for roosterfish, snappers and grouper to be good around rocks and structure. Lots of other species to catch as well, including jacks, mackerel and bonitos. Capt. Michael Alligood EpicFishingCostaRica.com

Versatile, fresh and readily available! Mangos seems synonymous with Costa Rica. We use this recipe with fish, chicken and even some appetizers. Mangoes may very well be the king of all fruits. They fight cancer, alkalize the body, aid in weight loss, regulate diabetes, help digestion, clean your skin, and make the perfect snack. 2 cups fresh cubed mango, about half inch 1 tbsp. fresh grated ginger 2 tbsp. pickled ginger, sliced 1 tbsp. soy sauce 1 tbsp. toasted sesame oil 1/4 cup diced red pepper 1 tbsp. chopped fresh garlic 1/2 cup green onion sliced pinch of salt grind of pepper Jimmy T’s Cajun spice, adjust to your heat preference Mix all ingredients together, do this aggressively to incorporate all flavors and textures This is a fresh salsa and not to be cooked, difference between a chutney or preserves, which are cooked. Adjust your flavors to your liking, these are the base ingredients, sometimes people like more ginger or soy, I say go for it. Enjoy!!

FISHINGFORECAST QUEPOS

By Benn Gilmour

November & December commences the time that we have all been waiting for in Quepos, with the return of bright sunny days and the flat calm seas that Costa Rica is famous for. The final two months of the year present some of the best ‘Grand Slam’ opportunities in the calendar. A Grand Slam is when an Angler catches three different Billfish species in a single day. To target Black Marlin, you can try live baiting with Bonito at Reefs such as ‘The Twenty-Six’ or ‘Furuno’. There should be good Blue Marlin numbers in the deeper water offshore and we expect the first of the Striped Marlin to make an appearance also. Put that with an excellent Sailfish bite then an IGFA Grand Slam could be a real possibility! We have experienced fantastic Tuna numbers this year and if previous years are anything to go by then we expect some BIG Tuna to be caught in the 150lb plus range. Inshore there should be plenty of Sardines & other baitfish along the

coastline making way for some of the best Roosterfish months of the year. You can also expect excellent Snook Fishing at the Parrita, Naranjo, Savegre & Baru rivermouths. Benn Gilmour Jackpot Sportfishing cell: +(506) 8458 4997

FISHINGFORECAST DRAKE BAY

By Capt. Willy Atencio

As we enter November and December in Drake Bay and the Cano Island area, the rain will begin to subside and the ocean starts to calm down. The water temperature is still a bit on the cool side which is always good for the Marlin bite. In our area we see predominantly Blue Marlin, but the Black and Striped Marlin show up occasionally as well. For those anglers who are feeling fit and want a battle, catching and releasing a Marlin is the ultimate thrill. We are passionate about catch and release for all billfish and Roosterfish, this ensures future generations will also enjoy our magnificent fishery. For those who would like to mount a trophy, our friends at Gray Taxidermy can create a beautiful and realistic replica for you. Speaking of billfish, we expect the Sailfish to show up right around Christmas and steadily increase in numbers through the end of April. Although the Mahi Mahi, Dolphin fish (depending on where

you are from) have been somewhat scarce recently, there is some good news. The increased regulations on the commercial fishermen have slowly been increasing the population of these beautiful and delicious fish. It’s always a treat and a ton of fun when Mahis are around Cano Island and we can quickly catch some dinner. In our area of the country, we are fortunate to have great year-round fishing for Roosterfish, Snapper, Grouper, Pompano and a variety of other bottom fish. We hope to see you soon in Drake Bay where there are more fish than people. Capt. Willy Atencio Reel Escape fishdrakebay@yahoo.com

We’ve Got Your

MARLIN

By Capt. Harry Glah

Any Marlin fisherman who has had the experience will attest that the opportunity for multiple Pacific marlin releases is unique to Golfito Costa Rica. Not only for multiple releases but also multiple marlin species on the same day. Blacks, blues and in the fall months you can throw in a few striped marlins to the daily count. The other exciting fact for the discerning angler is the opportunity to fish it “your way”. Pulling lures is the normal method of finding the bite however once this is accomplished there are a few other techniques are equally effective at enticing strikes. Live baiting with Bonito on #12 circle hooks is the tactic preferred by many anglers who love to see the bite. Pin a live bait off a rigger so it is dancing on the surface. When Mr. Marlin crashes it 50 feet off the transom in the crystal clear Pacific water it frames a picture you’ll never forget. For those into the bait and switch game you will not be disappointed. On Thumper we prefer Moldcraft “lil hookers” with a horse ballyhoo rigged with a 12/0 Circle for our drop back. This technique also gives the angler the choice of line class he wants to use. We have also used this technique to try out some of the new high end spinning reels with braid. This is also the favorite technique of fly fisherman. Most fly fishermen find that they get better strike ratio’s trying to convince a marlin to leave lures rather than trying to get them to ignore live bait. Whatever your fishing style Golfito will not disappoint you. If Pacific blues, blacks and/or striped marlin are on your “bucket list” visit Golfito. We’ve got your Marlin!

There is usually a good bite through the middle of January. The droves of sails haven’t quite arrived but they should still be easily scratched from a bucket list. Tuna, what can I say? With the purse seiners moved offshore the bulldogs should be available every time the spinner or spotted dolphin pass through.

MARLIN FORECAST IGFA Super Slam billfish time has arrived. The cooler water brought on by the rains has finally pulled the stripes into our area. For those lucky men whose wife understands their affliction, now is your moment. Head deep offshore for a few overnights and bring your ‘A” game. Blacks, Pacific blues, stripes and the ever present Pacific sails are all here now. Super Slam time will end as the sunny months of “Costa Rican Summer” reappear in mid-December sending the stripes to cooler climes…Fortunately the blacks and blues like it hot… Capt. NEWS from GOLFITO By Tom Hauer

Ten or twelve years ago while living in Florida, I read an article about fishing in Golfito, Costa Rica. Having fished all of my life I was very intrigued about what the writer described as a “pumpkin patch” hovering above one of the volcanic reefs in Golfo Dulce. That pumpkin patch was a school of Cubera snappers. That article, and the incredible image described by the author, seared a picture into my mind that never left me. Now a decade and a half later, I am in Golfito. As Director of Marina Operations here at the brand new Golfito Marina Village I am simply unable to express how honored, blessed and excited I am. After almost 30 years in the marina business I have found a home, a place and environment that suits my abilities and interests like no other. As I write this we are installing the electrical power pedestals, water, and fire suppression system on our docks. We have slips available for vessels

to 350 feet. Our 265’ fuel dock is on the way from Florida. Our fuel system contractor has installed and completed the upland portion of the fueling system. Our staff is undergoing first aid, fire, marina safety and hospitality training. Reservations and sales are actively being processed and our Marina Village Shoppes are being finished out for our commercial partners. Restaurants, yacht sales, marine parts, provisioning and tour companies are all on the menu. Tom Hauer Director of Marina Operations, Golfito Marina Village 506-2775-3000 tom@golfitomv.com

his hot, dry Southern summer has made for deplorable trout fishing. Tailwater streams are about the only places where an angler can still catch a few trout. Reports from the Watauga in eastern Tennessee are good. Georgia’s Chattahoochee River is fishing OK at the moment. Georgia’s Toccoa and Tennessee’s Clinch and South Holston rivers are producing, but the fishing has been less than average. The Hiwassee River Tailwater in Tennessee is reportedly too warm to fish, even on high water, which is usual this time of year since the TVA decided to manage stream flows for the benefit of recreational use on the lakes. Mountain streams around the region are low and warm, and the fish are

lethargic and reluctant to feed. Dukes Creek, the public trophymanaged fishery at Georgia’s Smithgall Woods, is open. I’ve received a few reports that the water is exceptionally low and the fish even spookier than normal, but they can be caught with stealth and precision. The only mountain streams reporting decent fishing are Noontootla Creek in Georgia and a few of the high-altitude creeks in the Smoky Mountains National Park. But don’t despair; some rain and cool nights will get us out of these doldrums soon. What I look for this month is the beginning of the brown trout spawning urge. Browns start to feed more preparing for the spawn and become more aggressive. Streamer fishing will become very productive and may produce your best fish of the year. Colorful dry attractor patterns like Royal Wulffs and Sparkle Stimulators will get showy rises on freestone streams. Good BWO hatches are just around the corner on tailwater streams. One of my most memorable trout fishing experiences occurred on the Hiwassee River in October back in the 1980s. A few Isonychias began hatching one afternoon while I was wading below the Stairsteps. Anytime these big duns start to emerge, I look for big fish. In a smooth run near the bank, I spotted the noses of two large fish sipping duns off the surface. On successive casts I caught a 20-inch male brown with a huge kype and a 23-inch female, both brilliant in spawning colors. I’m not an advocate of fishing for spawning fish after they are on their reds, but during their preparation they are fair game. In October, delayed harvest season in Tennessee and North Carolina will start. Georgia begins early November. The Tellico River in eastern Tennessee is a beautiful stream and perfect for fly fishing. The Nantahala and Tuckasegee rivers in North Carolina are also great delayed harvest streams. In Georgia, I’d plan to fish the Toccoa and the Chattooga rivers. And though not delayed harvest streams, the Raven’s Fork and the Oconaluftee River in Cherokee, North Carolina are fantastic fall fishing streams. Just because trout fishing is difficult at the moment, don’t put your gear away just yet. Take some time off and be ready to fish this fall. It’s the most beautiful time of the year to be on the stream. Ronnie Hall provides reports from The Fish Hawk in Atlanta. Check them out at www.thefishhawk.com.

FLY FISHING

BECOME A BETTER FLY ANGLER FOR BONES AND TARPON

I

t might seem trite, but the old saying “practice makes perfect” is perfect advice to the fly fisher about to make a first trip in search of bonefish. Swift and precise execution is extremely important for successfully sight casting to this species. A little, or a lot, of practice can help the angler perform well in that critical moment when it is time to present the fly. Perfect your cast into the wind. At most locations where the bonefish is found, heavy and strong winds are the rule not the exception. Accuracy and quickness when casting are more important than distance. A 50-foot cast will cover most situations, but if the fly lands a tad short or long, or if you are slow-at-the-switch in making the cast, a skittish bonefish will leave you talking to yourself. It’s important that you limit false casts to three or fewer. And keep your rod’s angle as low as possible. A rod held high like a flag pole will alarm this easily frightened game fish. You can practice these moves on your backyard lawn or at a local park. Body positioning is also important. Relax, keeping a slight bend in your knees. If you are a right-handed caster, position your left foot forward, your right foot positioned slightly back from your left foot. If you played baseball as a kid, this should resemble the closed stance you took in the batter’s box. Practice anticipating where the bonefish are swimming. Create mental fishing situations. Visualize bonefish swimming from left to right and from right to left. See the bonefish swimming directly at you as well as swimming away. Imagine you are on the flats and casting to a bonefish. Try to place the fly 20 feet beyond the direction the fish is

mouse. Move the mouse too quickly and the cat will lose interest. Move it too slowly and it will not chase. Find the right speed and the cat will go for the mouse. In the same way, the right speed will entice a tarpon to attack the fly. But be advised: strip it too fast and you are guaranteed to spook the fish. Once a tarpon locks onto the fly, speed up the retrieve. Don’t stop the fly, keep it moving. Once the tarpon commits, he is likely to take the fly. Give a good tug, or maybe a few, when you strip strike because the tarpon’s mouth is full of hard plates that make a good hook set imperative. Then hold on for the fight of your life!

For more fly fishing with Bowman go to

rogue industries

headed. Also, pretend the fish changes directions, in which case you need to pick up the line and cast again. Perhaps all this business practicing with your imagination seems infantile. However, in rehearsing and mentally cataloging the casts and moves you will be required to know, your chances for success will be improved. Feeding a Fly to a Tarpon To watch a tarpon eat the fly and take off, planing, jumping, twisting and often appearing to head in opposite directions at the same time is an exhilarating experience. To witness this astonishing event, you will need to master the art of proper and effective fly presentation. First, when a tarpon approaches from left to right or right to left, never make the mistake of casting behind the fish. Always try place the fly 10 to 20 feet beyond and 20 feet ahead of the fish at about a 90-dgree angle. Allow the tarpon to swim to the fly, making certain not to move the fly until the fish has closed in. Then, once the fly is positioned practically nose-to-nose with the fish, begin a slow-long stripping retrieve; tease the fish. Think of it as if you were teasing a cat with a toy

TIPS FROM A PRO

FRESHWATER FISHING IN THE RAIN

BRANDON LESTER

A

s summer winds down and the overnight temperatures fall, some of the most productive lake features for bass are bridges. Bridges act as natural funnels or pinch-points often leading back into creeks. Baitfish congregate in creeks during fall, and they often hang around bridges on their way. Big bass will be close behind. These bass will stay as long as shad are there, and they are usually pretty willing to bite if you know how to approach them. I use a three-step approach for fishing bridges in the fall. My three favorite baits are a swimbait, a spoon and a shaky head worm. When fish are suspended around a bridge and I can see them on my Raymarine electronics, my first choice is always a hollow-body

typically aren’t actively feeding, and there’s something about a spoon falling that makes them think it’s an easy meal. It’s something they don’t see a lot, and they bite it out of instinct because it looks like a big dying shad. My spoon setup is an MHXMB903 rod that’s 7’6” long and has medium-heavy action. A longer rod when casting a spoon allows for more distance as well as the ability to rip the spoon up to let it fall again. For line, I use 20-pound Vicious fluorocarbon. My final choice for fishing bridges is the shaky head worm. Fish on bridges will have inactive periods throughout the day when they don’t want to bite. That’s when I reach for the shaky

swimbait. Depending on depth, I usually use a ½- to ¾-ounce Mustad bullet-head jighead with a 5 ½-inch Strike King Shadalicious swimbait. I throw this on a MHXMB873 rod. This rod is 7’3” medium-heavy action, and I use 15-pound Vicious fluorocarbon line. I try to determine depth I am seeing most of the fish on my graph and count the bait down to reel it right through them. The swimbait will sink about 2 feet per second, so a seven to eight count will get the bait down to about 14 or 15 feet. That is usually the danger zone in the Southeast. I like to cast from different angles, as there will always be one angle that fires them up the best. My second choice in the fall around bridges is a big flutter spoon. My favorite spoon is the Strike King Sexy Spoon in the 5 1/2-inch size. I throw the spoon a lot when I find fish suspended around bridge columns. These fish

head on 6- to 8-pound Vicious fluorocarbon. There are several great shaky heads, just make sure you get one that features a sticky-sharp Mustad hook. I use a Zoom Trick Worm most of the time, usually in green pumpkin. My shaky head rod is a MHXHM-DS822. This rod is 6’10” and is balanced perfectly for finesse fishing. I fish the shaky head on the rip-rap bridge corners and around the columns after I’ve fished them with the other two baits. There is a misconception that shaky heads won’t catch big fish. It’s not true. Shaky heads are an absolute staple in my arsenal on the Elite Series. I hope these techniques help you catch more fish. FISH & FISHING

IN THE RED ZONE MARK SOSIN

I

t happens more often than most anglers think. You hook an oversized fish in deep water and struggle with the rod tip almost touching the water to drag that critter to the surface. For a while, it’s a standoff in which you gain a foot or two of line and the fish takes it back, plus a few more feet of line. After a physically taxing battle, you begin to see your adversary through the murkiness of the water. Capt. David Doll, a seasoned skipper, refers to this stage of the fight as the fish’s entry into the Red Zone. Picture another scenario where a husky denizen inhales your bait or lure near the surface and streaks for some distant sanctuary. Line peels off the reel with incredible speed. If you’re aboard a boat, you might actually have to chase the fish just to regain line. Eventually, the situation begins to turn in your favor, and your trophy is within 50 feet or so of the boat. It has entered the Red Zone. Capt. Bouncer Smith points out that it’s natural to be excited when you hook a good fish and are close to landing it. However, he cautions, you cannot lose your concentration and focus. Anticipation helps. Almost every fish makes at least one final attempt at freedom once it sees the boat or senses it is being dragged into the shallows of the surf or the shore. This sudden surge is either directly away from the rod’s pressure at burst speed or the fish will crash dive toward the sanctuary of the bottom. In either case, the line must absorb this impact and try to dissipate it over a shorter length.

A ng lers instinctively feel the need to pull back on the rod and clamp down on the reel drag at this moment to prevent the fish from moving away. That usually results in a lengthy tale about the one that broke the line so close to the boat. You can counter this escape tactic easily if you anticipate it and know it is about to happen. When you see or sense this surge, drop the rod tip and point it right at the spot where the line enters the water. Take your hand off the reel, allowing only the pre-set drag to operate. By pointing the rod at the fish, you reduce the drag to the minimum amount. Once your quarry has settled down, simply resume the battle. Put time on your side. It might make sense to land a fish quickly, particularly if you plan to release it, but take the luxury of a few extra minutes when that fish is in the Red Zone. You might have to work your catch back to the boat several times until the precise moment for landing arrives. If you hurry this last stage, the battle could end abruptly. Landing fish successfully necks down to concentration, anticipation and quick reaction. Victory must be celebrated after it occurs and not before. ndros, the largest of the Bahamian Islands, is a marvel, with stunning blue holes, turquoise waters, unique wildlife and of course large land crabs. Its people are highly patriotic and passionate, they are accommodating and friendly, the island’s geography is highly diverse and its flats are unparalleled. Andros is know as the “bonefishing capital of the world,” and for good reason. Flats are extensive, fish are large and diversity great. In short, Andros is an anglers’ paradise and a fly anglers heaven. I recently spent more than a month on Andros,

travelling from the south tip all the way north to the Joulters, exploring, documenting and interviewing guides for research in conjunction with Bonefish and Tarpon Trust, The College of the Bahamas and The Bahamas Fly Fishing Industry Association. South Andros is a tropical paradise with several great lodges including: Bair’s Lodge, Tiamo, Deep Creek Lodge, Mars Bay and Pleasant Bay. In South Andros, there are literally thousands 24

NATIONAL

NAT_1016.indd 24

OCTOBER 2016

of miles of shorelines where bonefish, permit, tarpon and a host of other saltwater species live. The sheer magnitude of flats available is overwhelming, and although there are many doit-yourself opportunities in South Andros, it is best to hire local guides whose knowledge is tuned to the daily, monthly and seasonal movements of bonefish. Indeed, bonefishing is the heart and soul of Andros, the guides rely on this, and consequently they are highly knowledgeable. If you want the best guides, you need to support them. Flats on the east side of South Andros are usually narrow, truncated by the Tongue of the Ocean, an ocean trench that drops deeper than 6,000 feet. This trench extends the length of Andros, providing ready access to pelagic species and world-class diving and snorkeling. For flats anglers, this proximity to deep water means water temperatures are generally more moderated (cooler in the summer, warmer in the winter) and access to deeper water often provides comfort for fish, hence the east coast tends to be where larger fish prevail. Flats vary widely from hard sandy substrates to sharp coral, and anglers need wading boots in most places. Standard bonefish flies work well in South Andros, but do not be afraid to use larger versions, 1s, 2s and even 1/0s or larger. Fly colors should match the bottom color, and anglers are advised to seek moving water for best results. Creeks and cuts channel food and oxygen-rich water, which concentrates fish. I stayed at Bair’s Lodge while in South Andros. Bair’s widely acknowledges the importance of scientific research, historical documentation and conservation. They offer the finest accommodations, high quality service and outstanding cuisine prepared by Bahamian chef

Valentio, a master artisan of all things food. Guides at Bair’s are resident locals, many of whom learned from their fathers who angled for bonefish as a form of subsistence in days gone by. Bonefishing has become a family tradition and an intergenerational pursuit. South Andros, although considered “Andros,” is separated from central Andros/Mangrove Cay and North Andros by water the locals call South Bight. A free-of-charge ferry runs between South Andros and Mangrove Cay, but I took the Tiamo water taxi between the two islands as I spent time at Tiamo Resort meeting some of their guides. Tiamo is an exclusive “eco” resort where tourists can try their hand at some bonefishing during their stay. I thoroughly enjoyed my time on South Andros. I look forward to returning some day. If you have not already been to South Andros, I highly encourage you to go! For more information on my research, please visit, http://tomkarrow.wixsite.com/bahamasguide-tek. H Idaho Develops Genetic Weapon Against Invasives By Roger Phillips, Idaho Fish and Game

atcheries have long been used to replenish and restore fish populations, but can they also be used to reduce or eradicate them? Idaho Fish and Game researchers are studying whether using traditional hatchery technology in a nontraditional way can eliminate unwanted fish populations in the wild. If successful, it is a tool that might be used worldwide to combat the spread of invasive fish species. Fish and Game researchers and hatchery staff are collaborating on a project using 50-year-old technology to develop a monosex fish population whose offspring can only produce males. These males have two YY chromosomes (YY) rather than the usual XY arrangement. Stocking YY-male hatchery fish into a body of water with an undesired fish population could change the sex ratio to all males within a few generations, and the unwanted fish population would eventually fail to reproduce and therefore die off. Once accomplished, Fish and Game would stop stocking those fish and fisheries managers would then restock that body of water with a more desirable fish species. Brook trout were selected for the first YY project because they are short lived and quick to sexually mature, which enables researchers to rapidly produce the hatchery broodstock and test the technique in a natural environment. Brook trout are also good candidates because they are nonnative in many Idaho waters, frequently overpopulate and stunt in both lakes and streams, which means fish are too small to be of interest for most anglers. The YY technique begins in a hatchery, where young brook trout are exposed to low-doses of a naturally occurring female hormone, estradiol, which has no effect on female fish, but causes male fish to produce eggs when they mature. The egg-producing males are crossed with standard males, which produce about 25 percent YY-male offspring. Those offspring are used to produce another generation that will theoretically produce exclusively male offspring when bred with any other brook trout. Brook trout produced in the program for stocking in the wild are not exposed to any hormones and appear like all other brook trout, but they carry two male chromosomes instead of one. While it sounds complex, it’s a fairly simple method of using hormones to affect gender in a segment of the population, then selectively breeding them to get an entire population to produce one gender. It’s routinely done in commercial aquaculture hatcheries to raise identical-looking food fish, increase growth rates, and control reproduction. If the program with brook trout proves successful, the “YY male” method could eradicate or limit other undesirable fish species in select waters, perhaps even large bodies of water with carp infestations, or other unwanted fish that limit game fish populations and harm habitat. Fish and Game has long used fish toxicants to eradicate unwanted fish from entire bodies of water, but toxicants are typically limited to smaller bodies of water, such as ponds, small lakes and reservoirs or small streams. Netting, trapping, and other fish removal methods also rid waters of unwanted fish, but those efforts are rarely a long-term solution because a few fish usually escape and spawn successfully. All those methods are time consuming, labor intensive, and often have to be repeated years later when unwanted fish populations rebuild. Fish and Game officials hope the YY-male approach will be a costeffective technique to control undesirable fish populations. Gary Byrne, the Fish Production Manger overseeing the hatchery portion of Idaho’s YY brook trout program, said it only took four years to develop the YY brook trout broodstock. Head Fisheries Researcher Dan Schill, who led the team conducting the research project, said they are encouraged by the low cost of broodstock development, and they hope the technique will curb brook trout populations in waters where it’s being tested. “The proof will be in the pudding over the next few years when our research staff obtain results confirming whether stocked YY fish successfully spawn in the wild and are ultimately effective in reducing the percentage of wild female brook trout in test waters,” Schill said. Stocking trials of YY brook trout in four Idaho streams began in 2014, and the first results are encouraging. A marked YY Male was observed actively spawning in October with a wild female, and testing done on wild fry in study streams in 2015 conclusively showed that some YY males successfully spawned. Of equal note, all progeny of stocked YY fish found were XY males, exactly as predicted and as investigators hoped. Fish and Game officials presented their findings at the August 2016 American Fisheries Society (AFS) national meeting in Kansas City, which has generated excitement in the fisheries science community. There, the AFS announced Fish and Game’s YY Male Brook Trout Research Program won the 2016 Sport Fish Restoration Outstanding Project award in the category of Research and Surveys. The awards highlight the importance and effectiveness of the sport fish restoration program and recognize excellence in fisheries management, research and education.

www.BALLYHOOD.com PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT HARDY ULTRALIGHT CA DD FLY REEL Large arbor fly reels have become the norm in fly fishing because of their ability to pick up a lot of line quickly. Did you know that Hardy introduced the revolutionary large arbor reel to the world back in 1911? With its Ultralite CA DD Fly Reel, Hardy carries on its reputation for high-end quality and unrelenting performance. Designed by the Hardy team in Alnwick, England, it may be the finest freshwater, large-arbor reel ever produced. It features aesthetic and structural improvements for serious anglers with a body made from aerospace-grade 6061 bar stock anodized aluminum for superior strength with a lightweight feel. This provides technical anglers with a lightweight, finely tuned reel that is more than a match for most freshwater species. There are eight sizes available, from size 3000 to 10000, with the 3.54-inch size 3000 (for 3- to 5-weight lines) hitting the scales at just 4.6 ounces. New for Hardy is the 340-degree, color-coded disc drag. The drag setting can be identified with a glance, as the red dots on the drag knob indicate a stronger drag and lighter drag settings are indicated by green. The drag can be configured from zero to maximum in just one turn of the knob. The Hardy Ultralite CA DD fly reel is available with a two-tone titanium or black finish. MSRP is $275-$309 for the black version and $275-$419 for the titanium reel.

ROBOTIC LIONFISH HUNTERS

A

non-profit company called Robots in the Service of the Environment is throwing its hat into the ring to battle lionfish with a robot designed to suck up the highly invasive species like a vacuum cleaner. Lionfish, which lack predaPBS Photo tors in our oceans, have exploded in numbers and litter reefs of the southern Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico. They outcompete and even eat the young of important recreational species and have done a number on reef ecosystems. Humans armed with spearguns have been the only limiting factor to their spread to this point. PBS reports that Robots in the Service of the Environment is working on several designs for robots that could kill mass numbers of lionfish. The eventual goal of the project, which was dreamed up in the fall of 2015 by Colin Angle, the CEO for iRobot and the maker of the Roomba robotic vacuum, is to design a robot that could hunt lionfish without a pilot. Currently there are several designs. One spears fish like a human would. Another electrocutes them to stun them before sucking them up into a storage chamber to be kept for food. Both require a human pilot. Currently prototypes are being tested in Bermuda. A benefit of robotic lionfish hunters is they could harvest fish in depths unsafe for humans. But there are problems left to be solved. An un-piloted robot would need to be able to accurately identify its target species. Also, due to the size of the lionfish problem, it would take thousands of robots operating independently to eradicate the scourge. That means the robots would need to be inexpensive and easy to make.

gainst threatening gray skies, a cloud of birds whirls and dives on baitfish herded to the shallows and disoriented. From below, big fish slash through the bait, feeding up for a long journey and the cold winter ahead. A third predator approaches from shore. Only this one is not gorging on menhaden, mackerel or herring. Balanced on jetty rocks or waist deep in the foaming surf, the angler casts as far as he can to reach the action. This is the fall striped bass run on the east coast. It’s the most intense surf fishing there is.

44.00 value

$

In September, Atlantic waters begin to cool. Enormous schools of baitfish flood out of the inlets and bays to be intercepted by pods of ravenous striped bass. The bass are putting on fat to carry them through the winter. They are running south along the coast toward their wintering grounds and eating everything they encounter along the way. From Maine to the Outer Banks of North Carolina, anglers eagerly await the arrival of striped bass in their waters. Some may chase the action in a boat, but this is a time when the surfmen can have it just as good. Whether sinking chunk bait beyond the breakers or casting a plug into a melee of surface-feeding schoolies, this is what it’s all about. Braving the cold fronts and high winds as fall storms sweep over the coast is part of the fun. Plenty of 20-plus-pound fish are caught from shore, and 50-, 60-, even 70-pound fish are a possibility. The run begins in September with action kicking off in Maine. Surfmen can be seen cruising the coast on U.S. Route 1 and pulled out at lookouts to watch for a blitz. By October and early November, the fish will have made it to outer Cape Cod. Night fishing the 47-mile National Seashore can sometimes be spectacular. As the season progresses, the rocky shores of Rhode Island become crowded with fish and anglers at places like Beavertail Point, where ample access, rock structure and a abrupt depth changes intersect. And on the subject of crowds, Montauk, New York, on the tip off Long Island, is one of the most publicized surf hot spots for good reason. Be warned: It gets competitive, and the regulars are not friendly. Into December, the jetties and beaches of the Jersey Shore and Sandy Hook should be producing consistent action. And down in Virginia, public piers and beaches around Virginia Beach see the northern fish as well as the migration out of Chesapeake Bay. The terminus for most of these migrating striped bass is Cape Hatteras, N.C., which is also the last stop for anglers looking for one last gasp. In late fall and winter, striped bass will be feeding up before the bite shuts down until spring. Drifting eels in the inlets of the Outer Banks from a boat is the most productive tactic, but surf anglers can get in on the action when bunker get pushed up on the shore.

PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT ADVENTURE MEDICAL KITS If you’re like most anglers, there’s a first-aid kit of some type somewhere on the boat. Chances are all the bandages have been used up, and the medical tape might still be holding the head on the dip net you broke last September. If a medical emergency were to occur on your boat, you’d be in serious trouble. Fishing is a pastime where hooks and lead are constantly flying around at eye level. Close contact with toothy critters is the goal. Wet decks lead to slip-and-falls, hypothermia is a threat, and there’s no counting the dangerous situations an angler willingly puts himself into. You’re not fishing hard enough if you haven’t suffered some sort of injury on the water. Think about it before you head out unprepared. If nothing else, a well-stocked first-aid kit could save you from having to abandon biting fish the next time a minor mishap occurs. Adventure Medical Kits has put a lot of thought into what a boater might need. With an array of medications, bandages, dressings and emergency gear, these kits are constructed to treat common on-the-water injuries. They are also designed to stand up to the marine environment. Thanks to the Adventure Medical Kit Easy Care organization system, it’s all easily accessible and includes reference cards with instructions on treating specific injuries. With kits ranging from a $24 basic emergency kit suitable for a day on the lake to a $600 all-inclusive kit housed in a dry box for extended offshore trips, there’s no excuse for not having one on your boat. The Adventure Medical Kit has made peace of mind as easy. The only thing left for you to do is put one on the boat.
