By CAM Staff A truck load of kayaks from Confluence Outdoors was overnighted to Texas for use in water rescues.

I

t was an historic hurricane season. With Harvey battering the Texas and Louisiana Gulf Coast and Irma strafing the length of Florida, damage from high winds and flooding was catastrophic. It is in such trying times that the American spirit shines. Harvey slammed ashore near Rockport, Texas on Aug. 25 and stalled out over southeast Texas, dropping up to 52 inches of rain over the next five days. The flooding was cataclysmic. Major highways turned to rivers and much of the Houston area was under water. Even as floodwaters rose, lines began forming on the sides of the highway. These were volunteers headed into the deluge to launch boats from freeway off-ramps. It looked like the launch line for the world’s largest fishing tournament. It was a proud moment for the fishing community. Anglers from all over the region rushed to the rescue pulling bass boats, jonboats and skiffs. Dubbed the Cajun Navy, this rag-tag bunch of heroes— along with official emergency response—conducted thousands of water recues. And response from the fishing and boating industries was strong as well. The following are few examples of how the fishing industry stepped in with a helping hand. Confluence Outdoors leaped into action as the magnitude of the flooding became clear. They overnighted a semi-truck load of Wilderness Systems and Perception kayaks to Houston. The boats, as well as paddles and PFDs provided by Confluence, were used in high-water rescue by Houston authorities. Honda went to work moving needed products like generators and water pumps to affected areas. And while Honda dealers went to work in rescue efforts, Honda Marine went to work making sure those dealers were stocked up to serve their communities with vital equipment. Additionally, Honda pledged $100,000 to the American Red Cross. The pledge will consist of a corporate contribution as well as a dollar-for-dollar matching gift program for Honda associate contributions. Evinrude immediately donated a boat and motor to a volunteer fire department in Lockport, Texas. The second phase of their relief effort was to deploy a wave of engines to area boatbuilders as well as food and clothing. Evinrude also agreed to match dollar-for-dollar donations to the American Red Cross made by employees. Suzuki, through its Texas dealers, donated boats, motors, ATVs and time to the rescue efforts. In addition, Suzuki provided two outboards to rescue efforts for Carolina Skiff boats that were on their way to Ron Hoover Marine, which has multiple locations in the affected area. Orvis recognized an immediate need for rain gear and wading gear. As well as supplying as many as they could, Orvis put the call out for individuals to ship waders, boots and rain jackets to the San Antonio Orvis location for distribution to rescue personnel. Platypus Fishing Line pledged to donate 100 percent of its website profits in September to the Red Cross Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund. The storms and damage from this season’s hurricanes were enormous, and so was the outpouring of support. As anglers and boaters, we should be proud of the response from our community.

Fly Fishing GEAR

Simms G3 Guide Stockingfoot Wader

Goat Head Spool Clips

Without sacrificing durability, Simms’ has constructed its most comfortable, best fitting and most breathable wader in the new G3 Guide Stockingfoot Wader. The G3 Guide was awarded Best Fly Fishing Accessory at ICAST 2017. Constructed with 4-layer GORE-TEX Pro Shell fabric in the legs and three-layer in the upper, this wader concentrates durability where it is needed most while providing added breathability. It takes comfort and mobility to a new level. The wader comes equipped with a chest pocket, removable flip-out Tippet Tender , hand-warmer pockets, integrated utility tabs and also features Simms’ patented front and back leg seams, gravel guards, and suspenders with opposing YKK buckles that allow for a waist-high conversion. It is available in models for men and women.

How many times have your clunky old tippet caddies gotten tangled in the bushes or hung up in slack line? Goat Head Spool Clips are an ingenious new way to carry spools of tippets more securely. Their simple and compact design keeps your spools handy yet out of the way at the same time. A single Spool Clip will hold two standard tippet spools and fits securely to most nylon straps. Spool Clips are made in the U.S.A. from 100 percent recycled plastic. They are simple, rugged, compact, versatile and always ready when you need them.

Douglas Argus Reel There is no denying the beauty and simplicity of a clickcheck reel. Without the advantage of a disc drag, the angler is more in touch with the fish and fights are more fun. The Douglas Argus Fly Reel is a fine looking click-check reel that gets you closer to the fish. It is a shared legacy between longtime anglers and the next demanding generation. On one hand, it is a beautiful reel. On the other, there is no undue advantage given to the angler. Reel includes a twilled pouch. It is made in Upstate New York out of machined bar stock 6061 aircraft aluminum with a standard arbor, and reversible click check with rim-positioned adjustment. The rim is laser textured for palming. The reel seat is constructed of marine brass.

Arc 99+ Fly Line

There is a famous quote by Wyatt Earp, “Fast is fine, but accuracy is everything.” In fly fishing, accuracy is everything. The difference between success and failure is often measured in inches. All modern fly rods are powerful, but accuracy is the new frontier in design. Making an 80-foot cast in saltwater is prospecting. Making a forty-foot cast on the nose of a laid-up tarpon is fishing. The H3 brings a fundamental shift from flex profiles to a new frontier in accuracy and purpose-driven design. Helios 3F and 3D each offer uncompromising purpose. 3F is accuracy with finesse, a dry fly angler’s dream. 3D is accuracy with power at distance for pinpoint delivery of larger flies. The difference is taper and stiffness, but the design foundation of accuracy remains constant. The H3 is the pinnacle of purpose, designed to master the moment and meet the demands of accuracy on a spring creek with a 3F or a tarpon flat with a 3D.

www.orvis.com

Designed for today’s faster action fly rods, the ARC 99+ is a half line size heavier and features a more condensed taper than standard true-to-size fly lines. This additional weight and specialized taper design loads fast action rods easier, resulting in longer, more accurate casts. Built around our 6 percent low-stretch Response Core, the ARC 99+ incorporates the latest advancements in fly line design, including transition zones, a super high floating permanent Nano PTFE coating and a low-friction, grooved line profile. We call this ZNG Technology. This makes the ARC 99+ one of the longest casting, highest floating and easiest mending fly lines on the market today. 10

O

ur grandfathers used old-school bamboo fly rods to create some of the greatest fishing stories of all time. That most of these stories took place on famous trout streams still influences what people think about bamboo’s place in fly fishing. Caleb Turner, of Turner Bamboo Fly Rods, has a different take on bamboo rods in the modern world. “Bamboo has a special place in the very heart of fly fishing, from the great western streams to the small streams of the Appalachians, but they don’t come to mind when people are talking the salt flats,” Caleb said. According to the Turners, there’s a misconception that there are no fast action bamboo fly rods, and that only the fastest action rods can be used in saltwater. Most rod makers and bamboo enthusiasts know this isn’t only untrue… it isn’t even the point.

“The feel found in bamboo rods is often confused with action for people picking up a bamboo rod for the first time,” Caleb said. “When they feel the action in the rod, they often over accelerate their forward cast causing them to lose energy in the line.” Caleb’s recommendation is to let the rod do the work, and to concentrate on technique. “It’s easier to feel when the rod is loaded with bamboo, and this really comes more into play for us on the flats than trout streams,” he said. What the Turners do differently than most other bamboo rod makers is cater to saltwater fly fishing. They are located in Mississippi right next to some of the most technical redfish flats on the Gulf Coast. “We design our saltwater fly rods with a fast action for stiff winds and quick-moving redfish that spook way more easily than their Louisiana counterparts,” Caleb said. With water the same color as the redfish, wind, and the need to have eyes of an Osprey, fly fishing the Mississippi Gulf Coast is more like bonefishing. “Bamboo gives us the action we need, the feel we need, and it’s able to load up at short distances but also extend a long cast to extremely wary redfish found around here.” Caleb said. “Tonkin cane grows in a 30-square-kilometer area in the Orient’s Sui River Valley. It is praised as the strongest species of bamboo with the greatest thickness of power fibers. These power fibers are what give bamboo rods what they have more than other material used in crafting fly rods, their touch. Despite what action you desire, bamboo rods offer a certain touch you just can’t get with anything else. If a rod is designed correctly, you can have all the action you need and still have that great feel. The rod lets you know when it’s loaded instead of having to figure out the timing for that individual rod.” In short, bamboo fly rods definitely have their place in modern performing fly rods. Accuracy, touch and presentation are things bamboo rod makers strive for in crafting their rods. If you get a hold of a quality rod, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by all the things it can do. For more information on bamboo fly rods or Turner Bamboo Fly Rods visit www.turnerflyrods.com or email caleb@turnerflyrods.com.

was a dime-bright fish of only 6 or so iK e pounds that still had the power to get j o s, Ic the reel deep into its backing. There is no better way to begin a fishing journey than when it all comes together early on. We knew we would be experiencing yet another trip of a lifetime. With the sun only slightly hitting the horizon and a brief glimpse of darkness for what seems like only minutes, the days are filled with subtle takes of the fly, followed by sips of Brennivin, cast and repeat. We ended the trip in the same fashion as it started. Another sleek salmon peels line and leaps. At the end of the run, Raven dips the net and we release the fish to bid farewell for what is hopefully only another year until we return. With Raven being the pilot, Brian, Kyle and I explored areas that have been experienced by few. Targeting trophy fish in such a landscape with close friends only solidifies the need for one to explore, be bewildered and experience life events that shape you as a person. Iceland will leave your soul fulfilled but still wanting more.

a

C

asting into a pool where fish leap and dragons rise brings emotions that cannot be found in many places. From the etched lava landscape to the clean cold water, Iceland offers anglers a backdrop to a story that will always begin with the statement, “It was the trip of a lifetime.” With three trips in three consecutive years, I can use the all-too cliché fishing phrase, “I am hooked” on Iceland. Page after page can be written about the acrobatic Atlantic salmon, the headstrong pull of a sea-run brown trout, the rocky canyons, waterfalls, and the art of fishing a hitched tube-fly. There is so much that pulls an angler to Icelandic rivers. For the past three years, I have spent the end of July fishing the Laxa i Kjos, a smaller river in southwestern Iceland about an hour from the capital city, Reykjavik. The river allows an angler to experience much of what Icelandic topography has to offer. From the large pools in the coastal beats, where an angler can’t help but stare out toward the Atlantic Ocean, to the meandering turns of the pastoral meadow sections, and deep narrow-cut canyons that carve the hillside until you reach Thorufoss, the impassable falls, home to a famous scene from the popular series “Game of Thrones.” The landscape, at least to me, is secondary to those that accompany you on the journey. On this year’s trip, I was fortunate enough to return to the river with good friends: Brian, who has made the trip with me before; Kyle, a friend who would be experiencing this fabled land for the first time; and our guide Hrafn (Raven), who brings an entire new appreciation to the fly fishing guide world with a persona that is somewhat mythical, just like the waters we were wading in. Arriving in Iceland, most anglers have aspirations of watching a tube fly skate across the surface of crystal waters, witnessing the careful eat of the fly and the line going tight with the initial run of one of the fly world’s most sought after quarry, an Atlantic salmon. We were fortunate enough to be those anglers. The first fish of the trip was caught soon after arrival. It

On the wake of Hurricane Harvey in our area last month, I am happy to report that our family’s residence remained intact. Our hearts ache for all of the families that cannot report the same. It was a very surreal experience to drive around our area and see so much devastation. We know that each of our readers have either been personally affected and/or have someone close to them that has been affected. We pray that our area and our neighbors are able to quickly recover from the damages that were sustained from Hurricane Harvey and that each of you remain patient and strong during this recovery period. October is National Bullying Prevention Month. National Bullying Prevention Month is a nationwide campaign founded in 2006 by PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center. The campaign is held during the month of October and unites communities around the world to educate and raise awareness of bullying prevention. This campaign has grown from an initial week-long event to a worldwide effort with thousands of individuals participating in multiple activities throughout October. Bullying is the use of force, threat, or coercion to abuse, intimidate, or aggressively impose domination over others. The behavior is often repeated and habitual. One essential prerequisite is the perception, by the bully or by others, of an imbalance of social or physical power. More than 1 out of every 5 students report being bullied. Take action and show that you care about kids being safe at school, while online, and in the community. Don’t be a bully! Stand up and speak out! fter our current events in our community with the hurricane and the closer of the San Luis Pass it is important to touch base on the water currents. Understanding water currents are very important to understand so you don’t put yourself or others in danger. And at the same time there are those who know the danger and take the risk to help those who are in the current already trying to get others or animals out. It’s all a touchy subject at times but maybe if it helps a person to not cross a current to get in a dangerous situation. Areas where there have been a lot of rain can form extra strong current and whirlpools that can drown people walking, swimming or boating in the water. People tend to overestimate their skills and underestimate the forces of the water. The areas can give the appearance of serene and harmlessness. When water flowing is coming over the crest the water goes straight down, hits the bottom, then bounces back upward and back near the top, the current gets drawn back toward the source of the falling water and creating loop. In addition to being trapped in the currents, the water is dangerous because people can get hit by debris that are flowing in the currents. The currents and debris make it extremely dangerous for rescuers as well. Now rip currents are total different then just flow of currents. Rip currents is a specific kind of water current which can occur near beaches with breaking waves. A rip is a strong, restricted, and narrow current of water which moves away from the shore, through the lines of breaking waves running out of the bay, and is strongest at the surface of the water. A rip current forms because wind and breaking waves push surface water inward towards land, and this causes a slight rise in the water level along the shore, which will tend to flow back to the open water by the route of least resistance. When there is a area that is slightly deeper or a break in an offshore bar or reef, it allows water to flow offshore more easily, and a rip current will be through that gap. Water

that has been pushed up near the beach flows along shore towards the outgoing rip as feeder currents, and then flows out at approximately a right angle to the beach in a tight current called the “neck” of the rip, where the flow is most rapid. When the water in the current reaches outside of breaking waves the flow scatters to the side and loses power and dissipates. Sometimes the location of rip currents can be difficult to predict. While others you can anticipate it will recur in the same place, such as San Luis Pass. Swimmers often get caught up in a rip and don’t understand what is going on. Then that leaves to panic and exhaust themselves by trying to swim directly against the flow of water. A common misapprehension is that rip currents can pull a swimmer down, under the surface of the water. A rip current is strongest close to the surface, as the flow near the bottom is slowed by friction. That water isn’t going to stop and people get tired. Even people who believe they are strong swimmers should be cautious of the current, especially during conditions with heavy rains. Also, many beaches have signs or flags advising of the conditions. In a rip current, death by drowning, it occurs when a person has limited water skills and panics, or when a swimmer persists in trying to swim to shore against a strong currents, thus eventually becoming exhausted and unable to stay afloat. Please, stay cautious at all times and aware of the water. If you’re questioning the water currents just stay out and don’t risk it. ell hurricane Harvey did a number on multiple cabins and Baffin Bay. Demolished all but two in Shamrock Island. North Padre especially Clems Bait and Marker 37 sustained a lot of damage but are up and running.Port Aransas was hardly recognizable. It was hard to drive through the town and look at all the people with a blank stare on their face. I went out for a couple of days to help people move the furniture out and got the sheet rock installation of their homes. To see the way that the coastal bend community came together to help out do anything for anyone. Whether they need them or not everybody has to be helping hand. It was a amazing to watch all the love and support that was being given. It’s just a beginning of a long road ahead. North padre & Port Aransas businesses needs the support of our public to start making their way back fishing, boating and enjoying the shops and restaurants as much as possible. That way they can survive. I know it doesn’t look as beautiful as it normally does but your money going to businesses will help them rebuild faster. As far as fishing guides talking to multiple guides between September and October we have most average of 70% of our business. The fishing continues to be great in the hurricane weather you book with me your normal guide or any guide please get out your local businessman and fishing guides bait stands tackle shops. The fishing in the land cut it great. The south shore of Baffin Bay has had some decent boxes of trout and a couple trout in to 27” but lots of redfish at rocky slough. Emords hole has a good mix of reds, trout and drum.Dimmit point has trout and drum. Dead mans has redfish. Nueces Bay has redfish and trout on the reefs. There is still some debris floating around Bays so take your time and be safe on the water. Down south Lures on a hell razor jighead has been the ticket for my clients. Depending on the water clarity in dirty water I have been throwing the Texas Roche in clean water watermelon red flake. The new Shimano Chronarch is an amazing reel stop by Roys bait and tackle and check them out. Have a great fall and help out each other on the water.

n the Houston area, stormwater from large flood events wash pollutants, chemicals and debris down our storm drains, into our bayous and eventually into Galveston Bay. The longer between rain storms or the more intense a rain storm, the more pollutants are washed into the water. However, major rain events have short term, and potentially long term, impacts on water quality. So how has Hurricane Harvey impacted water quality? Galveston Bay Foundation’s volunteer water quality monitors mobilized after the storm to help us better answer this question. Read on to find out what they tested, what the results have been so far. Fecal Bacteria Fecal bacteria generally spikes to high levels after heavy rain events. These bacteria are found in untreated sewage as well as in pet and animal waste. During major storms, sewage infrastructure often malfunctions, causing an increase in untreated sewage entering our streets and waterways. Stormwater will also wash any pet waste on lawns into public waterways. Exposure to these bacteria can cause gastro-intestinal sickness and other health issues. What our water quality monitors found: In general, GBF volunteer water monitors have found that while most spikes in these bacteria occur after major rain events, they tend to die

off within three to four days. Bacteria sampling began this past Monday, September 4, after GBF opened its lab for processing. So far, the collected water samples have had low values of bacteria. While it is almost certain bacteria levels were high right after Harvey, over a week has passed since the storm hit. This shows that bacterial runoff into the Bay is declining; Galveston Bay is beginning to bounce back from the damage inflicted by Harvey. Additionally, Harvey poured such an immense amount of water on the Houston area that the sheer volume of water could have further diluted some of the bacteria it washed into Galveston Bay, reducing its initial concentrations. To date, the samples collected around Galveston Bay have had concentrations of bacteria between 10-40 Most Probable Number (MPN). The EPA limit that it considers safe for swimming is 104 MPN. While this is a good sign for Galveston Bay right now, these results may not be the same for many of Houston’s bayous, which are still being impacted by flood waters and have less of a potential for dilution. The flood waters in the bayous could potentially impact the Bay in the future. Salinity Plant and animal life within the Bay rely on a specific range of salinity; water that is too fresh makes it difficult for life to thrive in Galveston Bay. Water that remains too fresh or too salty will impact growth and reproduction rates, can increase the prevalence of disease, and can ultimately impact their survival. What our water quality monitors found: The low salinity values GBF volunteer monitors have found around the Bay have been less reassuring than bacteria level results. Galveston Bay’s waters are currently much more fresh than they should be. Much of the unprecedented amount of rainfall that Harvey dumped on the region is finding its way into Galveston Bay, diluting any saltwater entering from the Gulf of Mexico. Many volunteers have commented that salinity levels the past week have been the lowest they have ever seen in years of testing. This is not good for life in Galveston Bay. Turbidity/Debris Turbidity is how clear the water is. This can have an impact on planktonic and plant life in the Bay, which may impact the health of other animals as well. What our water quality monitors found: We are finding that an increase in particulate matter in the water is making the water less clear. Water levels are also higher than normal, and of course much more debris has been observed in the water. One water quality monitor even observed a plastic Barbie doll floating in the water at their site!

Big Trout Prospects Post Harvey By: CAM Special Correspondent Tobin Strickland

here is a lot of misinformation on youtube after Harvey. While Harvey sent a big slug of fresh to the bays, it was still a one time ‘double sized’ shot. No doubt a huge amount in Galveston but other bays along the coast received a solid layer of fresh water on the surface that will mix in over 3-4 weeks. The trout in Galveston have shifted positions and will find refuge in areas like the ship channel and deeper portions of East, West, and the pass. With this big event happening early in the Photo Courtesy Capt Trey season all we need now is some hard NW Prye - Matagorda Big Trout wind and some early cold snaps to shift the big trout pattern into place. I talked to Matagorda’s Capt. Trey Prye and this is what Trey had to say “Last year the tides stayed high and the temperatures were moderate; causing us to only have about a week of the ‘winter trout’ fishing pattern. There is almost always some Big Trout in a system that are still keyed on big mullet and little trout”. There lies the key to finding the big trout pattern despite seasonal variability. Another factor that really worked for me was something that Capt. Walt Kalinowsky shared in our Big Trout DVD “You have to fish areas that have structure off shore nearby”. This is where those fish find refuge during tide drops and the closer that structure is to your mud gut, the more consistently it will hold Big Trout. Tobin created TroutSupport.com - for Trout and Redfish Anglers. Check out the newest weedless walker for catching Big Trout, Reds, and flounder in Sea Grass and Shallow Oyster | www.troutsupport.com

NEWS RELEASE:

Recreational Fishing Participation Increased Nearly 20 Percent Over the Past 10 Years Preliminary findings by the USFWS also reveal increase in fishing expenditures ALEXANDRIA, VA - SEPTEMBER 13, 2017 The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has released its initial report of the 2016 National Fishing, Hunting, and Wildlife-Associated Recreation national survey. The survey, conducted every five years in partnership with the U.S. Census Bureau, shows that fishing participation is up nearly 20 percent over the last 10 years. Anglers also increased their overall spend by 2.4 percent during the past five years. “Dedicated efforts by the Recreational Boating & Fishing Foundation (RBFF), state fish and wildlife agencies, the recreational fishing industry and independent programs have made increases in recreational fishing possible,” said American Sportfishing Association’s (ASA) Glenn Hughes, vice president of Industry Relations. “Thanks also goes to ASA’s Government Affairs team and our partners who helped ensure that legislation and policy decisions were in place to provide access, clean water and fisheries conservation which anglers need for a successful day on the water.” Overall, fishing participation increased 8.2 percent for individuals 16 to 65 years of age over the last five years. This is the highest level of participation since 1991. Revenue from equipment purchases to all trip expenditures also increased from $45 billion to $46.1 billion in the last five years. “We’re excited to see the fruits of our efforts to increase fishing and boating participation validated by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s latest report – a true benchmark of the industry,” said RBFF President and CEO Frank Peterson. “The results of this report show that RBFF has had a positive impact on participation since its inception, and we only plan to build upon these numbers.”

ASA has developed tools and materials for the recreational fishing industry to further assist in the effort. The emphasis is on effectively reaching anglers through recruitment, retention and reactivation (R3) practices. Several state agencies and industry partners are already implementing these R3 practices to help achieve 60 million anglers over the next 60 months. A press release with more details on overall wildlife-related participation is available from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. ASA will release a full report on the findings in the spring of 2018. RBFF is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to increase participation in recreational angling and boating, thereby protecting and restoring the nation’s aquatic natural resources. The American Sportfishing Association (ASA) is the sportfishing industry’s trade association committed to representing the interests of the sportfishing and boating industries as well as the entire sportfishing community. We give the industry and anglers a unified voice when emerging laws and policies could significantly affect sportfishing business or sportfishing itself. ASA invests in long-term ventures to ensure the industry will remain strong and prosperous, as well as safeguard and promote the enduring economic, conservation and social values of sportfishing in America. ASA also gives America’s 46 million anglers a voice in policy decisions that affect their ability to sustainably fish on our nation’s waterways through Keep America Fishing®, our national angler advocacy campaign. America’s anglers generate more than $48 billion in retail sales with a $115 billion impact on the nation’s economy creating employment for more than 828,000 people.

ello there guys and girls! This is Captain Mike Roberts of the Blue Fin out of Freeport, TX. This has so far been another great year out on the Gulf. The blue water has moved back in and at some points it is not far out. We have spent the last month chasing shrimp boats. We have found several Dorado, from small chickens to teenagers to some nice bulls. The black fin have set more of a challenge behind the boats this year but we have been able to land several nice size ones. I have spent some time trolling and searching weed lines and rips. These have produced some nice Wahoo along with larger Cobia. To me it seems like every species has its year and Kingfish have called this year theirs! The last month or so we have found them from 10 miles off the beach to 60 miles out. At the right place and the right time of the day you cannot get bait in fast enough. The weather has given us a majority of calm seas but got some bumpy ones in there as well. As we all know the gulf coast has been hit with Hurricane Harvey and Irma. This will bring some changes to fishing but things will soon bounce back and come back stronger. From all of us at Blue Fin Charters our thoughts and prayers go out to anyone that has been affected by these storms. As always fingers crossed for calm seas and tight lines. Stay safe out there and good luck. Texas Strong! Captain Mike Roberts, The Blue Fin Blue Fin Charters | 979-239-1133 | www.bluefinfreeport.com

GALVESTON BAY FISHING REPORT By: Capt.Craig Lambert

W

hat a good flushing of the bay system we had with Hurricane Harvey. These types of events are a necessary and much needed natural process for our bay system. Now that we are a month or so away from the storm the bay system is really starting to shape up and fishing has returned back to normal. Although our northern portions of the bay are still a little fresh, as fall progresses, expect the north end to rebound quickly unless we get more major rain events of course. This month will be typical of most October’s in the past. Expect to catch a lot of redfish and specks along with a few flounder that always start to show up at this time. The jetties have been the hot spot these last few weeks because that is where the saltiest water has been but areas like East Bay and West Bay having been producing decent boxes of fish. Look to shorelines and structure more as speckled trout pull off of the middle reefs and start heading towards shallower waters. The concrete ship and Bolivar wells have always been good spots for redfish but because of Harvey the specks may be still hanging around these areas. Seawolf Park will most likely see a little earlier flounder run than usual this month so flounder fishermen get ready that area will see some flat fish after we have a few of these early season cold fronts that drop the water levels a bit. The fading light and cooler water temperatures will allow the wadefishermen to get up close to those grassy shorelines looking for gamefish in 2-3 ft of water. A 1/16th oz jig on lighter wind days and a 1/8th oz on windier days is what I prefer and I especially love fishing during low light conditions on nasty, soupy, rainy days. Those are the days that produce the biggest fish. Sunny days with no wind may be nice for the angler but big fish prefer to eat during weather events like fronts and foggy, cloudy days so plan your trips accordingly. Look for the redfish and bigger sow trout to be running the shallower grasslines while the smaller trout are out running the flats. Soft plastics in plum or red shad are my favorite colors but you should throw whatever you are

confident with. I prefer the softer baits when wadefishing like Bass Assassins and Big Nasty’s. They produce a little more action and the fish hold on to them longer it seems. Do not be afraid to throw a super Spook or other topwater bait. This is topwater time for sure. I use the harder and more durable plastics like Norton Sand Eels for bird activity which has already begun in a few areas of the bay system. Expect bird activity to increase after every cold front as large quantities of shrimp are flushed out of our marshes. Areas like lower Trinity Bay and the San Jacinto River are still a little fresh. That has kept the trout down south in our lower Bay system for now but as the salinity levels rise a few trout will continue their migration northward. The redfish are much more tolerant to fresh water so they are already found along the ship channel and can be found over spoils, shallow clam reefs and along rip-rap all the way up to the northern fishing grounds. Spinner baits or shrimp and a popping cork are both deadly redfish baits that will produce better than most others. Keep your baits up close to the rocks and you will be in the strike zone. Looks like we have a great fall fishing season ahead so everyone be safe and take a kid fishing!

Flounder Tips & Tactics M

y hopes are that everyone is at least doing somewhat ok due to all of the crazy flooding and hurricane stuff going on. The greatest thing I have seen through all of the terrible circumstances is lots of great people doing whatever they can to try and keep others in need or in danger out of harms way. I know that together we can work as one no matter what. We are definitely stronger when united instead of divided. I will talk about flounder but just getting out on the water and seeing all of the changes that the hurricane has made. In our near future I see some dredges having to come due to the erosion and movement of huge volumes of sand. When I arrived at my spot last night a lot had changed, the channel that was once five car lengths long was now maybe 40 feet across underneath. It still appeared to be the same but the depths had all fluctuated dramatically. Places where it was 5 and 6 get deep I was hitting bottom in about a foot and a half. There was a whole lot of trees that were uprooted and power lines down in the water making driving at night an even bigger challenge. You have to watch out for boat killers while running, that is a stump or lumber facing angled upwards toward the surface and will puncture your hull in a heart beat. Knowing that I am not the only fisherman who makes his money by using the oceans resources, I wonder how this is impacting all of you? Whether you are a guide or fishing commercially it has to be difficult at this time. I got to the ramp last night and was told that there was a curfew of midnight on and off of the water which really slows down my money as I work from 10pm-6am on the water. The water has gone from iced tea color to finally starting to look sandyish at least. You just have to be careful of all of the extra junk in the water. I saw fish last night it was just very dirty and windy, most were undersized with few that were 17 plus inches. Kind of made it more of a scouting trip rather than fishing. The ones I did see were up very shallow during the incoming tide about half way through, a few were actually over massive oyster beds right by the shore in any little sand pocket. With all of the new cuts that were formed from the storm it should give some good possibility of quality flounder spots. If you do get out there just be extra careful until you know what is in the water. I have not fished for flounder since the storm but will have a better report next month after things settle down. BIZARRE REDFISH BITE With Capt. Michael Sharky Marquez

T

he Texas Coast is a wonderful place for all types of anglers. From fishing the shallows for big trout in the bay, to deepsea trips far into the gulf, Texas provides opportunities to catch a fish of a lifetime for any angler. One of my personal favorite fish to target is the large Bull Reds in Galveston, Texas. A Bull Red is a redfish that exceeds a length of 28” and is known for being one of the hardest fighting fish to catch inshore. Targeting and catching Bull Red’s is the perfect combination for a memory-making trip that you will never forget. Bull Reds feed hard in September & October and spawn in late summer to fall. The water conditions at this time are perfect to support big schools of mullet as well as blue crabs. Whether you are fishing from the beach, a pier, or on a boat, mullet and crabs are one of their favorite snacks. Bull Reds are big for a reason. They have spent years successfully navigating throughout the waters and have seen it all. They have avoided being caught for a long time and have become more intelligent throughout their journey. So how do you get one of these big Bull Reds to bite your bait? From the boat, the Galveston Jetty system is our first and favorite choice. We fish the dropoffs where the schools of mullet and crabs are swimming through. On half of our rods, we throw out fresh cut and live mullet; with the other half we use fresh blue crabs. Their feeding patterns throughout the day dictate which they prefer; lively mullet, or the easy meal of the strong scented cut mullet or crab. This method keeps you prepared for anything. Once we cast our bait out, we set the drags low and turn our clickers on. This will allow the fish to pick up the bait and run with it without feeling any tension. A key factor in catching one of these fish is to wait several seconds after the line starts screaming, allowing the fish to fully eat the bait. The action begins with raising your drag, setting the hook, and hollering, “It’s a MONSTA baby!” These fish can put up a solid fight from `5 to 30, depending on the size of the gear you are using. The key is to have fun and enjoy every minute of it. Ready to catch a Bull Red of a lifetime? Visit our website to book your trip today! www.outcastfishincharters.com Capt. fter much consideration the Sisters Helping Sisters (SHS) 5th Annual Fishing Tournament “Celebrating 5 Years of Changing Lives” will go on as planned. Hurricane Harvey put a permanent scare on many peoples lives. A total of 8 of the ladies SHS supports lost everything to Harvey. One thing Harvey did not take away was the CANCER that they battle daily. SHS, now in its 5th year has helped over 100 ladies battling cancer in our local area. They are nearing $200,000.00 being paid out to assist these ladies with things like rent, medical deductibles, electricity, food, parking, fuel, child care and transportation to treatment. SHS invites you to a day of entertainment and a “BREAK” from all that Harvey has left behind. There will be a ladies fishing tournament, tradeshow. Motorcycle fun run and entertainment. The event is being held at Bayshore Park in San Leon on October 14th 2017. Their tradeshow,

How Do Hurricanes Affect the Waters and Fish? WINDS

In small lakes or ponds, wind action may push surface waters to one side of the lake. Water from the bottom comes to the surface to fill the space the surface water used to occupy, bringing with it sediments and organic materials from the bottom. The water from the bottom is naturally low in oxygen. The bottom materials may include hydrogen sulfide; in high enough concentrations, hydrogen sulfide can be lethal to fish and is responsible for any “rotten egg” or “sewage” odors. Bacteria in the sediments are also brought to the surface; these bacteria decompose the organic material from the bottom, using up oxygen in the process. This whole event is termed a “turnover,” since literally, the bottom comes to the top. Hurricane Irma Heading Toward the Leeward Islands (Photo Credit: NOAA)

H

urricanes are a big threat in many of the states and can cause severe damage worth millions of dollars within hours. Homes, businesses, vehicles and boats are destroyed and can even harm persons. Protecting yourself and your loved ones is priority over saving physical items when your area is threatening by a hurricane. But as an avid angler have you ever wondered what happens to the fish and waterways during and after a hurricane?

WHAT HAPPENS TO THE OCEAN AND ITS PROPERTIES?

The upper levels of the ocean are typically arranged by temperature and by salinity. That is, colder, saltier water lies below the warmer, fresher water near the surface. When a hurricane comes by, it mixes everything up, resulting in a muddled and more homogeneous upper ocean. That means the surface water is cooler and saltier than it was previously was, and deeper water is warmer and less salty than it previously was. However, in very shallow coastal areas, the large amount of fresh cold rainwater from the hurricane can actually reduce the temperature and salinity of the near-surface water. Intense hurricanes can generate 60’+ waves. Damaging currents can extend down to at least 300 feet below the surface, capable of dismantling coral reefs, relocating ship wrecks, breaking oil pipelines, and displacing huge volumes of sand on the seabed.

LONG PERIODS OF CLOUDY DAYS

In aquatic ecosystems, the oxygen manufacturing system consists of microscopic organisms and aquatic plants that carry out photosynthesis: using energy from sunlight to create carbon-based nutrition for themselves with oxygen as a by-product. When there are long periods of cloudy days, these organisms produce less oxygen. At night, photosynthesis doesn’t occur at all, and these same oxygen-producers are actually using up oxygen during respiration, just like fish and other animals. Under these conditions, it does not take long before there is little oxygen left for fish. Low-dissolvedoxygen fish kills often occur early in the morning, when oxygen levels are at their lowest.

HOW DOES A HURRICANE AFFECT MARINE LIFE?

Larger marine animals such as sharks seem to be barely affected. They can detect tiny changes in pressure as larger waves at the surface approach, as well as the reduced surface pressure associated with the storm itself, and they also swim deeper or leave the area. However, hurricanes have been known to result in large amounts of dead fish, crabs, sea turtles, oysters, etc. due to reduced amounts of dissolved oxygen in the water, rapid salinity changes, and violent surf. Just like us humans up here on the surface, marine life suffers for months to several years from the death and destruction following a hurricane. Here are some reasons you may see fish kills following a major storm event:

CHANGES IN SALINITIES

Freshwater flooding from rain or saline storm surge may trap fish in an inappropriate salinity. If this happens rapidly and the fish have no escape, species that are intolerant to changes in salinity may die.

LOW DISSOLVED OXYGEN

Low dissolved oxygen is by far the most common cause of post-storm fish kills. When oxygen levels get too low, fish are unable to obtain the required amount of oxygen necessary for metabolism. Several factors may occur together to cause this condition: COASTALANGLERMAG.COM • THEANGLERMAG.COM

Primary Elections – Time to Drain the Swamp

E

ach political party holds primary elections, by state, to select candidates for the November election. Most “primaries” are held in February or March to provide the winning candidate 7 or 8 months to campaign for the November election. Whomever wins each party’s primary election becomes the candidate who will run for the U.S. House or Senate seat(s) in the next election – in this case, the November 2018 election. Every 2 years all Congressmen are elected; Senators have 6-year terms. Senate terms are not on the same schedule as Congressional terms; their election schedule rotates. In 2018, of the Gulf states, only Texas and Florida have Senators up for election. Why is a primary election important? When a given political party dominates a district or state’s electorate, the primary election is your only opportunity to “drain the swamp” (that is, if you believe your interests are not being served by your elected official). The primary election becomes the party’s candidate in the November election – hence, this is where an incumbent can be voted out. Approval ratings for U.S. Congressmen and Senators are low. 85% of Americans believe that their current Congressmen and Senators are not adequately representing their interests and serving the people of our country. All 435 Congressmen plus 33 Senators are up for re-election in the 2018 mid-term elections; this represents an opportunity to not just complain but to improve the situation! Within the Gulf of Mexico states some of the incumbent candidates have energetically supported recreational fishermen by co-sponsoring the “Modern Fish Act” (similar variations of which are proposed in the House of Representatives and Senate). Here’s a list of the Gulf State incumbent representatives who actively support recreational fishermen by co-sponsoring their legislative chamber’s bill: The incumbent federal representatives who have not supported recreational fishermen are choosing to maintain the “big government” federal management of our Gulf fisheries (versus management by the bordering states):

The incumbent federal representatives who have not supported recreational fishermen are choosing to maintain the “big government” federal management of our Gulf fisheries (versus management by the bordering states):

Let’s encourage these officials to represent our interests and support recreational fishing by co-sponsoring the Modern Fish Act. If these politicians continue to support only their special interest donors, at the expense of recreational fishermen, we need to replace them with officials who will support their constituents. The way to do that is to VOTE FOR AN OPPOSING CANDIDATE IN THE PRIMARY ELECTIONS. The opposing candidate will have many of the same “party views” as the incumbent – but will be looking for a campaign differentiator. Find out how he responds to this issue. Want change? Vote for the candidate that supports your Recreational Fishing rights in the Primary Elections of 2018! Find your House or Senate representatives by visiting www.usa.gov. Not registered to vote? Visit: https://www.usvotefoundation.org. Register now to be ready for the primary election. NOTE: If you register as a Republican – you’ll vote in the Republican primary. If you register as a Democrat – you’ll vote in the Democratic primary. If you register as an independent – YOU DON’T GET TO VOTE in the primary – only in the final November election. h, the fall. It brings us colorful foliage, football, fresh apple cider and big ornery brown trout. When the mercury begins to take the plunge and daylight starts to dwindle, big mature brown trout start their yearly routine of procreation. What follows is a feeding binge of mature trout. Fish that have been uncatchable all summer throw caution to the wind. This is not the time for small flies and delicate presentations. Big gaudy nymphs and large streamers are the name of the game in fall. Large stonefly patterns like Girdle Bugs and Pat’s Rubber Legs are good choices as are the usual generic mayfly patterns like Hare’s Ears and Pheasant Tails, just opt for

a size 8 instead of an 18. My personal favorite fall flies are streamers, and something with a little bit of color, too. For some reason big fall browns seem to like streamers with a bit of orange in them. Sculpin patterns can be especially deadly this time of year. Whether it be the giant protein-packed snack a big sculpin delivers or a triggered attack response implanted in trout to protect their roe, it should be used to your advantage. It is also the time for stealth. With overly large trout sometimes holding in ridiculously shallow water, being sneaky pays huge dividends. Wear drab colored shirts at the very least. Even a camouflage jacket is not too far fetched. I normally work a river upstream, but this is not the case when fishing fall streamers. I’ll work it down. I can be much quieter and more stealthy when walking with the current as opposed to against it. If possible, stay on the bank as much as you can. Most fish will hit on the swing, so the area you expect the take to come will be downstream of your location. If you were working upstream, you could have already spooked a fish. Cast across, swing it down, take a few sneaky steps down stream, think about it, cast across, swing it down. Walking the river is crucial. Don’t just haphazardly crash through the water on your way to a good run. Hunt the river this time of year. Take a few steps and watch. This is where a good pair of polarized glasses are worth their weight in gold. Look over the entire stream, not just the typical haunts. You may be pleasantly surprised and amazed by what you’ll see. Trout will still be positioned in good usual runs too, but much more apt to attack your offering. Instead of heading to the deer stand or taking up a spot on the couch to watch the big game, get out on the stream. Just maybe, a kyped-up, big old slab of spotted butter will end up in your net. he dry brisk November morning air is a welcome change to Florida’s Forgotten Coast residents, but not just for the obvious reasons. The summer heat has lifted, and the mighty red drum is hungry and looking to fill her belly with whatever kind of crustacean or finny fish she can get close to. As you move stealthily along the marsh, you search for the signs: a wake along the grass line or a tail piercing the water’s surface. Either one is worthy of a cast and, if presented properly,

can result in the silence of the morning stalk being broken by the crash of a topwater plug being engulfed, the scream of a reel’s drag and some enthusiastic expletives. Stalking the skinnies of the marsh can be a challenging experience. Reds spook easily, so stealth is a must, as are accurate and purposeful casts; all this is what makes the hunt so rewarding. The waters of Franklin County are teeming with reds, making the chance of fooling, fighting and releasing a mighty red an extremely attainable and rewarding experience. If you come to this area to chase reds, any shallow-drafting boat will put you in a position for success, but some are better suited than others. Ideally, the ability to pole, paddle or scull your vessel will give you the advantage of stealth, but a trolling motor and a well-planned use of tides and wind also works well on the flats. Franklin County TDC is giving away a free red fishing excursion this month, so enter for your chance to win and make your redfish dream a reality. The reds and so many other fish are abundant in some of the most beautiful places on earth, right here. EXPERT ADVICE

See the Fish

DAVID MANEY, FOWLER’S SUNGLASSES

W

alking a shallow trout stream, casting to structure in lakes or making sure you’re going after the biggest fish in an offshore school you need functional high performance UV sunglasses to see beneath the water. One pair may not fit the function for each of these varied UV demands. Shallow streams with bright sunlight require amber for most people. Deeper murky waters and overcast conditions need grey or amber. For offshore with bright sun and the need to see deeper into the blue waters, your best bet is blue mirror or grey. As an avid angler and someone who’s been involved in the sunglasses industry for over 20 years, my advice is to always try to match the sunglasses to the condition. This requires keeping several different UV’s with you. Most sunglass cases come with clip-on attachments so keeping a few pair of sunglasses with you has never been easier. As the conditions change during your day, you’ll be prepared to match your UV formula with the change. Once you’ve prepared yourself for these UV changes you’ll be on top of your angling game no matter what.

For the best overall coverage in any condition I recommend one pair of blue mirror/grey and one pair of green mirror/ amber. This simple modification in your sight fishing tactics will make a huge difference in your angling success. Tight Lines, David Maney Fowler’s Pharmacy 888-340-9021 www.FowlersSunglasses.com

uring the fall and winter, there is not a better saltwater game fish to target with a fly rod than redfish. Plentiful throughout the Gulf States, the redfish provides a great fly fishing opportunity for anglers of all skill levels who want to sight fish in shallow clear water. I’ve always considered the redfish to be the perfect saltwater game fish. It offers the angler a perfect venue to hone his or her sightfishing skills. Why? Because of two important factors: accessibility and plentiful fishing opportunity. From a logistical standpoint, most anglers can book a flight for great redfish destinations from most major cities in the U.S. Texas, Louisiana, Alabama and the panhandle of Florida are prime winter redfish spots. Each of these locations has experienced fly fishing guides who are knowledgeable and professional. Access to the marsh flats, where the redfish live in the winter, is quite easy and the number of redfish you see in a day can be mind blowing! Three factors for successful sight fishing to Redfish: 1) Can you see the fish? Visibility is the most important factor when sight fishing in shallow water. It’s great when you have a bluebird day and you’re seeing the fish from 100 yards away. However, Mother Nature usually has her own ideas on conditions. So, being able to identify fish even in tough lighting is important. Look for odd shapes in the water, V shaped wakes or even a subtle dimple that breaks the water’s surface. These are all signs of redfish feeding in an area. TIP: Use yellow polarized lenses. These will provide better contrast under tough lighting conditions. 2. Can I make a short cast? Many redfish are hooked 20 feet or less from the boat. Believe

me, the short cast is the toughest cast to make when sight fishing to redfish. Why? Because we are so focused on perfecting the 60-foot cast and neglect the importance of dropping a cast less than 20 feet from the boat. The 60foot cast is important, but it rarely comes into play when sight fishing to redfish. Work on your short cast as well. TIP: Work on a flip cast. Only cast the head of your fly line at targets on your left and right sides at 10 to 20 feet max. 3) Where should I place the fly? Redfish can see very well. I’ve seen them chase a fly from 20 feet way. However, I find placing a fly a couple feet in front of their noses works best. Once you’ve made the cast, let the fly settle to the bottom. As the redfish moves toward the fly, begin to move the fly with short strips. Once the redfish sees the fly, it will swim over and inhale it. At this point all you have to do is keep the rod tip on the water and strip strike to set the hook. TIP: On an open lawn, place small Frisbees at 5, 10, 20 and 30 feet from your casting position. Work on placing the fly in the center of each Frisbee without a false cast.

n May, Minnesota angler Jake Robinson tied his own catch-and-release state record with a 49-inch flathead catfish from the Minnesota River. Mark Mosby, of St. Anthony, Minn., had apparently seen enough of that mess. In August, he went out on the St. Croix River and hauled in a massive flathead that measured 52 ½ inches in length and 32 inches in girth. Minnesota DNR recently announced that it is the new state record for the catch-and-release category. Actually, Mosby describes himself as an occasional angler. His buddy John Kaiser is the bigcat hunter. Kaiser was the one responsible for $3 million of our recently renovated rigging Mosby up with an 80-pound braid of Mexico.
