CAM DESCENDS ON SURF EXPO
Surf Expo January Records 21% Increase In Total Attendance
Surf Expo, the premier watersports and coastal lifestyle tradeshow, saw a robust 21% year-over-year gain in attendance for its January 2023 edition, hosting more than 8,500 industry professionals at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida, from January 4-6 for an incredible buying experience.
“The surf, coastal, and resort markets are thriving and vibrant,” said Roy Turner, Surf Expo SVP and show director. “We were thrilled to see that qualified buyer attendance was up 20% at this show over the previous year, with more than 4,100 qualified buyers attending. These retailers from the U.S. and more than 60 different countries got to check out more than 750 brands.”
The surf section was larger than at the September show, with 27 new exhibitors in the surf section alone and many brands attending their first trade show ever, such as Former and Rivvia Projects, and surfboard maker Misfit Shapes M/SF/T. Other notable brands that participated included BN3TH, Birkenstock, VISSLA, Keen Footwear, Hey Dude, Salty Crew, Katin, Brixton, Dickies, Firewire Surfboards, Sharp Eye Surfboards, Xcel Wetsuits, Pura Vida, Jetty, Havaianas, Sperry, Sun Bum, AFTCO and many more.
Brands were thrilled with the retail turnout and interest.
“January Surf Expo was one for the
records!” said Patricia Thornton, president of Psycho Tuna. “Retailers were present and buying. Surf Expo has been and will always be my favorite show as we always come out with new business.”
Business was fast and furious for other brands at the show as well. “As a new brand into our third year, this was our busiest show we have had since we launched I-SEA,” said Don Dyer, vice president of sales for I-SEA. “Tons of retailers showed up to write business. We saw over 130 retailers in two and a half days. This was the best Expo I have

Okeechobee Edition
Please join us in welcoming Capt. Joe Gruny, the new owner of The Angler Magazine Okeechobee edition. Capt. Joe acquired the business from Don Norton, who will be stepping away to retire full time.
Capt. Joe Gruny was born in New York in 1968. He has been an avid angler from an early age and started cutting his teeth in local tournaments in Long Island, N.Y. at the age of 10, winning several tournaments throughout his teen years.
Capt. Joe moved to Florida in 1987 and immediately jumped into the bassfishing scene, fishing the Okeechobee and South Florida tournament trails. In 2010 Joe attained his captain’s license and started guiding Okeechobee and South Florida, quickly becoming one of South Florida’s top fishing guides for largemouth and peacock bass.
In 2019 Capt. Joe moved to Lake Placid, Fla. and expanded his knowledge about Central Florida lakes as a guide on Fellsmere Headwaters Lake.
In 2021 Capt. Joe opened Marine and Tackle Warehouse in Sebring, Fla.
Capt. Joe will run the franchise with his fiancé, Racheal Proctor. Racheal will use her background in marketing, events and social media to help grow the business and spread the word about the sport she and Joe love.
Volusia County Edition
Please join us in welcoming Capt. Jamie and Deidre Thrappas, the new owners of Coastal Angler Magazine Volusia County edition.
Jamie is a 21-year resident of Volusia County, where he and his wife Deidre live on a 10-acre horse ranch in Osteen, Fla. They acquired the Volusia County edition jointly and enter their latest venture armed with a wealth of business and sales experience.
Coastal Angler Magazine and Capt. Jamie’s existing businesses complement each other perfectly. Nine years ago, he launched his own successful charter business Yellow Dawg Fishing, out of Daytona Beach, and last year he opened Yellow Dawg Bait & Tackle in Ormond Beach. With existing contacts in the local business community, nearly a decade in corporate sales, and a three-year stint managing sales for Native Eyewear and Costa Sunglasses—while running charters—the Thrappas’s are well positioned to be the voice of the local business and fishing communities. Their yellow lab, Bay, will continue duties as a mascot.
“When I heard about this opportunity, I knew it was a perfect fit,” said Capt. Jamie. “I love the fishing industry, and I am pretty connected in that industry as well as with the local community here in Volusia County. I look forward to making a positive influence on fishing in the area as a whole as well as helping other small businesses grow.”
The Thrappas’s are consummate outdoorspeople, with a love for fishing, bowhunting,
friends, their dogs and family. They are looking forward to working with the rest of
and best practices and to help others when they can.
“I think learning from colleagues is a huge part of everyone’s success,” said Capt. Jamie.
