By CAM Staff A truck load of kayaks from Confluence Outdoors was overnighted to Texas for use in water rescues.
I
t was an historic hurricane season. With Harvey battering the Texas and Louisiana Gulf Coast and Irma strafing the length of Florida, damage from high winds and flooding was catastrophic. It is in such trying times that the American spirit shines. Harvey slammed ashore near Rockport, Texas on Aug. 25 and stalled out over southeast Texas, dropping up to 52 inches of rain over the next five days. The flooding was cataclysmic. Major highways turned to rivers and much of the Houston area was under water. Even as floodwaters rose, lines began forming on the sides of the highway. These were volunteers headed into the deluge to launch boats from freeway off-ramps. It looked like the launch line for the world’s largest fishing tournament. It was a proud moment for the fishing community. Anglers from all over the region rushed to the rescue pulling bass boats, jonboats and skiffs. Dubbed the Cajun Navy, this rag-tag bunch of heroes— along with official emergency response—conducted thousands of water recues. And response from the fishing and boating industries was strong as well. The following are few examples of how the fishing industry stepped in with a helping hand. Confluence Outdoors leaped into action as the magnitude of the flooding became clear. They overnighted a semi-truck load of Wilderness Systems and Perception kayaks to Houston. The boats, as well as paddles and PFDs provided by Confluence, were used in high-water rescue by Houston authorities. Honda went to work moving needed products like generators and water pumps to affected areas. And while Honda dealers went to work in rescue efforts, Honda Marine went to work making sure those dealers were stocked up to serve their communities with vital equipment. Additionally, Honda pledged $100,000 to the American Red Cross. The pledge will consist of a corporate contribution as well as a dollar-for-dollar matching gift program for Honda associate contributions. Evinrude immediately donated a boat and motor to a volunteer fire department in Lockport, Texas. The second phase of their relief effort was to deploy a wave of engines to area boatbuilders as well as food and clothing. Evinrude also agreed to match dollar-for-dollar donations to the American Red Cross made by employees. Suzuki, through its Texas dealers, donated boats, motors, ATVs and time to the rescue efforts. In addition, Suzuki provided two outboards to rescue efforts for Carolina Skiff boats that were on their way to Ron Hoover Marine, which has multiple locations in the affected area. Orvis recognized an immediate need for rain gear and wading gear. As well as supplying as many as they could, Orvis put the call out for individuals to ship waders, boots and rain jackets to the San Antonio Orvis location for distribution to rescue personnel. Platypus Fishing Line pledged to donate 100 percent of its website profits in September to the Red Cross Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund. The storms and damage from this season’s hurricanes were enormous, and so was the outpouring of support. As anglers and boaters, we should be proud of the response from our community.

Fly Fishing GEAR
Simms G3 Guide Stockingfoot Wader
Goat Head Spool Clips
Without sacrificing durability, Simms’ has constructed its most comfortable, best fitting and most breathable wader in the new G3 Guide Stockingfoot Wader. The G3 Guide was awarded Best Fly Fishing Accessory at ICAST 2017. Constructed with 4-layer GORE-TEX Pro Shell fabric in the legs and three-layer in the upper, this wader concentrates durability where it is needed most while providing added breathability. It takes comfort and mobility to a new level. The wader comes equipped with a chest pocket, removable flip-out Tippet Tender , hand-warmer pockets, integrated utility tabs and also features Simms’ patented front and back leg seams, gravel guards, and suspenders with opposing YKK buckles that allow for a waist-high conversion. It is available in models for men and women.
How many times have your clunky old tippet caddies gotten tangled in the bushes or hung up in slack line? Goat Head Spool Clips are an ingenious new way to carry spools of tippets more securely. Their simple and compact design keeps your spools handy yet out of the way at the same time. A single Spool Clip will hold two standard tippet spools and fits securely to most nylon straps. Spool Clips are made in the U.S.A. from 100 percent recycled plastic. They are simple, rugged, compact, versatile and always ready when you need them.

Douglas Argus Reel There is no denying the beauty and simplicity of a clickcheck reel. Without the advantage of a disc drag, the angler is more in touch with the fish and fights are more fun. The Douglas Argus Fly Reel is a fine looking click-check reel that gets you closer to the fish. It is a shared legacy between longtime anglers and the next demanding generation. On one hand, it is a beautiful reel. On the other, there is no undue advantage given to the angler. Reel includes a twilled pouch. It is made in Upstate New York out of machined bar stock 6061 aircraft aluminum with a standard arbor, and reversible click check with rim-positioned adjustment. The rim is laser textured for palming. The reel seat is constructed of marine brass.

Arc 99+ Fly Line
There is a famous quote by Wyatt Earp, “Fast is fine, but accuracy is everything.” In fly fishing, accuracy is everything. The difference between success and failure is often measured in inches. All modern fly rods are powerful, but accuracy is the new frontier in design. Making an 80-foot cast in saltwater is prospecting. Making a forty-foot cast on the nose of a laid-up tarpon is fishing. The H3 brings a fundamental shift from flex profiles to a new frontier in accuracy and purpose-driven design. Helios 3F and 3D each offer uncompromising purpose. 3F is accuracy with finesse, a dry fly angler’s dream. 3D is accuracy with power at distance for pinpoint delivery of larger flies. The difference is taper and stiffness, but the design foundation of accuracy remains constant. The H3 is the pinnacle of purpose, designed to master the moment and meet the demands of accuracy on a spring creek with a 3F or a tarpon flat with a 3D.
www.orvis.com
Designed for today’s faster action fly rods, the ARC 99+ is a half line size heavier and features a more condensed taper than standard true-to-size fly lines. This additional weight and specialized taper design loads fast action rods easier, resulting in longer, more accurate casts. Built around our 6 percent low-stretch Response Core, the ARC 99+ incorporates the latest advancements in fly line design, including transition zones, a super high floating permanent Nano PTFE coating and a low-friction, grooved line profile. We call this ZNG Technology. This makes the ARC 99+ one of the longest casting, highest floating and easiest mending fly lines on the market today. 10

ur grandfathers used old-school bamboo fly rods to create some of the greatest fishing stories of all time. That most of these stories took place on famous trout streams still influences what people think about bamboo’s place in fly fishing. Caleb Turner, of Turner Bamboo Fly Rods, has a different take on bamboo rods in the modern world. “Bamboo has a special place in the very heart of fly fishing, from the great western streams to the small streams of the Appalachians, but they don’t come to mind when people are talking the salt flats,” Caleb said. According to the Turners, there’s a misconception that there are no fast action bamboo fly rods, and that only the fastest action rods can be used in saltwater. Most rod makers and bamboo enthusiasts know this isn’t only untrue… it isn’t even the point.
“The feel found in bamboo rods is often confused with action for people picking up a bamboo rod for the first time,” Caleb said. “When they feel the action in the rod, they often over accelerate their forward cast causing them to lose energy in the line.” Caleb’s recommendation is to let the rod do the work, and to concentrate on technique. “It’s easier to feel when the rod is loaded with bamboo, and this really comes more into play for us on the flats than trout streams,” he said. What the Turners do differently than most other bamboo rod makers is cater to saltwater fly fishing. They are located in Mississippi right next to some of the most technical redfish flats on the Gulf Coast. “We design our saltwater fly rods with a fast action for stiff winds and quick-moving redfish that spook way more easily than their Louisiana counterparts,” Caleb said. With water the same color as the redfish, wind, and the need to have eyes of an Osprey, fly fishing the Mississippi Gulf Coast is more like bonefishing. “Bamboo gives us the action we need, the feel we need, and it’s able to load up at short distances but also extend a long cast to extremely wary redfish found around here.” Caleb said. “Tonkin cane grows in a 30-square-kilometer area in the Orient’s Sui River Valley. It is praised as the strongest species of bamboo with the greatest thickness of power fibers. These power fibers are what give bamboo rods what they have more than other material used in crafting fly rods, their touch. Despite what action you desire, bamboo rods offer a certain touch you just can’t get with anything else. If a rod is designed correctly, you can have all the action you need and still have that great feel. The rod lets you know when it’s loaded instead of having to figure out the timing for that individual rod.” In short, bamboo fly rods definitely have their place in modern performing fly rods. Accuracy, touch and presentation are things bamboo rod makers strive for in crafting their rods. If you get a hold of a quality rod, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by all the things it can do. For more information on bamboo fly rods or Turner Bamboo Fly Rods visit www.turnerflyrods.com or email caleb@turnerflyrods.com.

was a dime-bright fish of only 6 or so iK e pounds that still had the power to get j o s, Ic the reel deep into its backing. There is no better way to begin a fishing journey than when it all comes together early on. We knew we would be experiencing yet another trip of a lifetime. With the sun only slightly hitting the horizon and a brief glimpse of darkness for what seems like only minutes, the days are filled with subtle takes of the fly, followed by sips of Brennivin, cast and repeat. We ended the trip in the same fashion as it started. Another sleek salmon peels line and leaps. At the end of the run, Raven dips the net and we release the fish to bid farewell for what is hopefully only another year until we return. With Raven being the pilot, Brian, Kyle and I explored areas that have been experienced by few. Targeting trophy fish in such a landscape with close friends only solidifies the need for one to explore, be bewildered and experience life events that shape you as a person. Iceland will leave your soul fulfilled but still wanting more.

asting into a pool where fish leap and dragons rise brings emotions that cannot be found in many places. From the etched lava landscape to the clean cold water, Iceland offers anglers a backdrop to a story that will always begin with the statement, “It was the trip of a lifetime.” With three trips in three consecutive years, I can use the all-too cliché fishing phrase, “I am hooked” on Iceland. Page after page can be written about the acrobatic Atlantic salmon, the headstrong pull of a sea-run brown trout, the rocky canyons, waterfalls, and the art of fishing a hitched tube-fly. There is so much that pulls an angler to Icelandic rivers. For the past three years, I have spent the end of July fishing the Laxa i Kjos, a smaller river in southwestern Iceland about an hour from the capital city, Reykjavik. The river allows an angler to experience much of what Icelandic topography has to offer. From the large pools in the coastal beats, where an angler can’t help but stare out toward the Atlantic Ocean, to the meandering turns of the pastoral meadow sections, and deep narrow-cut canyons that carve the hillside until you reach Thorufoss, the impassable falls, home to a famous scene from the popular series “Game of Thrones.” The landscape, at least to me, is secondary to those that accompany you on the journey. On this year’s trip, I was fortunate enough to return to the river with good friends: Brian, who has made the trip with me before; Kyle, a friend who would be experiencing this fabled land for the first time; and our guide Hrafn (Raven), who brings an entire new appreciation to the fly fishing guide world with a persona that is somewhat mythical, just like the waters we were wading in. Arriving in Iceland, most anglers have aspirations of watching a tube fly skate across the surface of crystal waters, witnessing the careful eat of the fly and the line going tight with the initial run of one of the fly world’s most sought after quarry, an Atlantic salmon. We were fortunate enough to be those anglers. The first fish of the trip was caught soon after arrival. It

Howarth, along with his son Barrett, are building on a heritage of superb design and meticulous craftsmanship. Top-quality components, premium interiors and functional features all come standard on a Mag Bay. They are built to last, and can be customized to fit the owner’s needs for fishing or cruising. One look at the specs, however, will tell you she can be rigged out as a serious angling platform with an approximate range of 350 miles. With multiple hull designs, the Mag Bay 33 is available with amenities like wireless windlass, various seating and lighting options, oversized display screens, joystick, Seakeeper gyro, side door, extra large top and much more.
Since 2015, Mag Bay Yachts has been building on what is sure to become a legendary tradition of high quality sportfishing boats. The Mag Bay 33 is a center console that bridges the gap between elegance and function. An initial patented hull designed by Michael Peters Yacht Designs, of Sarasota, Fla., presents gorgeously unique lines that are sure to turn heads. A modern yet classic look is as sleek at the docks as it is slicing through the seas offshore. And built with the heart of a fishing boat, she is as at home serving as a yacht tender as she is in varied seas as a dryriding, nimble-handling tournament fishing machine. That was the idea when the co-founders of Cabo Yachts launched Mag Bay. Cabo’s Mike

onefish & Tarpon Trust’s Sixth International Science Symposium will take place Nov. 10-11 at the Bonaventure Resort and Spa in Weston, Fla. Open to anglers, scientists, conservationists and fishing industry representatives, this global gathering will also kick off BTT’s 20th Anniversary celebration. “This year’s symposium promises to be the largest and most significant in our history,” said BTT President Jim McDuffie. “We have assembled the foremost scientists in the flats world to present their latest research findings on bonefish, tarpon and permit, and explain how newly acquired knowledge will benefit the conservation of our fisheries.” In addition to presentations by leading scientists, the symposium will spotlight angling legends who will share their time-tested techniques for catching the iconic gamefish of the flats. Andy Mill, Chico Fernandez, C.A. Richardson, Steve Huff, and Rick Ruoff will be among the greats on hand to offer instruction on an indoor casting lane. New to this year’s symposium is a Flats Expo, showcasing the products and services of industry leaders, from the latest technical developments in the sport to world-renowned fishing lodges and outfitters. Fly tying and photography clinics, and an Art & Film Festival also highlight the schedule, along with a banquet honoring conservation heroes. Dinner guests will have the chance to compete for auction items, including bucket-list destination trips, fine art, top-of-the-line spin and fly-fishing gear, and a special BTT 20th Anniversary trip to fish and conduct research with BTT-affiliated scientists. As always, the role of science-based approaches to conservation will be the centerpiece of the event, featuring presentations and Q&A about the latest research on bonefish, tarpon, permit— the species, their habitats, and the larger fisheries they support— as well as panel discussions on how science is guiding BTT initiatives in Florida and across the Caribbean Basin. Of special note will be several recently concluded studies that aim to benefit the Florida fishery. “One of the best things about the symposium is that everyone is able to see how the research informs conservation, and how this helps to protect and restore flats fisheries. It really is unique to be able to participate in this process and see it at work, from start to finish,” said Dr. Aaron Adams, BTT Director of Science and Conservation. BTT’s mission statement is “To conserve and restore bonefish, tarpon and permit fisheries and habitats through research, stewardship, education and advocacy.” To obtain a media pass for the event, contact Nick Roberts: nick@bonefishtarpontrust. org. GULFSTREAM YACHTS Gulfstream Yachts is coming up on its 10-year anniversary and turning out some of the best boats it has ever built. With a dedicated focus to safety, Gulfstream designs customizable center consoles as comfortable fishing or cruising as they are unsinkable.
Gulfstream 34CC The 34CC is a hard-core fishing machine with features that make excursions comfortable and enjoyable for anyone. A unique feature of the 34CC is the large bed area inside the center console that is perfect for finding shade or shelter from the storm, and it can air-conditioned. An advanced hull with a delta pad along the rear 12 feet of the running surface and an integrated stepped transom bracket capable of handling twin or triple motors reduces drag. These features help the boat plane almost instantaneously. One, two or three livewells carry as much bait as you need, and an ergonomically designed console accommodates large electronics. Five large insulated fish/storage boxes hold ice for extended periods because of the boat’s foam-filled construction. This boat was designed for the serious tournament angler or the weekend warrior, and it can be tailored to the owner’s preferences. Length 34’0” Airline_Ad_CoastalAngler_8-1-14_Layout 1 8/1/14 1:14 PM Page 1 Beam 9’11”
Draft 28” Fuel 300 Gal. (400 Gal. option) Dry Weight 7,000 Pounds Recommended Power: 600-1050 HP (twins or triples)
Gulfstream 52 In its 52, Gulfstream introduces what is perhaps the most unique center console ever built. It is a hard-core fishing and diving boat offering unsurpassed comfort with an air-conditioned helm and passenger seating area that can serve as a second bedroom. The large cockpit and forward sunpad offer ample outdoor space, and the enclosure can be converted to open-air. Other key elements of the 52’s design are high gunnel walls and generous passageways for easy access to all areas of the boat. Gulfstream collaborated with Setzer Yacht Architects and Michael Peters Yacht Design using their patented Stepped “V” Ventilated Tunnel hull to give this vessel the feature set of a larger yacht. It’s a great standalone boat and the ultimate multipurpose yacht tender with a customizable layout to suit the owner’s needs for fishing or cruising. anal Lights come in a few colors and styles. There are white and green lights, and above or below the surface models. Each has its benefits and setbacks. I think most would agree that the green underwater lights are better for watching the fish swim rather than catching them. I have heard a few theories with the most popular being the fish can see the lures better with the light coming from the bottom. With that thought, I tried a
new technique that worked great for us, and I think it can help you catch a few more of those finicky green-light seatrout as well. Kayaking the canal lights was the right choice for our Saturday night activities. Three of us all threw Jerk Shad style soft plastics in pearl, black/blue glitter and black/gold/lime. Pearl appeared to have a slight edge over the other two. While the color didn’t have much of a correlation to our hookup ratio, one rigging method did. We all started fishing the bait using a different weight of weedless hook, from 1/8 oz. and 1/16 oz. to even lighter than that, and even with no weight at all. One stood out as the best choice by far over the others, the weightless hook with floatation in the lures to slow the fall. Once we determined what the trout wanted, it was fish after fish. We kept our limit of 30 and released more than we wanted to count. We tuned each lure to have a super slow fall, much slower than any standard plastic with a weightless hook. We adjusted the amount of floatation depending on the size and brand of hook we were using. The rod action was very subtle, just a steady rise of the rod tip then back down reeling up just a little of the slack, making sure not to move the lure forward. Anything more aggressive only resulted in a few strikes. The flat slow fall in clear water was what they were looking for. You could count five to almost 10 seconds at times before the lure would sink out of sight. That is how slow the fall was, and that is what triggered the strikes. What I love most about fishing is that I never stop learning new techniques. If you fish the lights at night and can’t get those underwater green-light trout to eat, this is a method to get them. Capt. Michael Okruhlik is the inventor of Controlled Descent Lures and the owner of www.MyCoastOutdoors.com.

A Wade-Fishing Pilgrimage To South Texas
By Chris Bush • Photos by Kyle Johnson
F
or the majority of my life I have traveled all over the Gulf Coast in search of trophy trout. As a self-proclaimed “purist,” 25 miles east of Raymondville, Texas is as good as it gets. Port Mansfield is a small sleepy coastal town that sits on the Gulf of Mexico south of Corpus Christi and about an hour’s drive north of the Mexican border. From salt-stained road signs to “town deer” nibbling clover in the nearby empty fields—this town exudes simplicity. In this wade-fishing heaven, anglers seek trophy trout immortality. I schedule visits here annually. A pilgrimage to a fishing holy place, I immerse myself waist deep in its waters, fishing for absolution. So, as we met with long-time friend and charter captain, Mike McBride, his welcoming embrace immediately eclipsed the awkward interval since our last visit. Better yet, a quick command of “Let’s go get ’em” made its way through the smoke of a Marlboro Light, sending us scurrying for our gear. The tremor of the motor echoed the near physical vibration brought
on through anticipation, and the idle out of the canal seemed like a lifetime. Thankfully, in typical south Texas fashion, Capt. Mike paid tribute to the cowboys of old and cattle-called his 250 ponies into a full gallop. Now entering Laguna Madre, Mike precisely guided us to our spot, despite a stiff southerly breeze. As we arrive, I step off the boat and remind myself of why I love this place. From “trout-green” water to scurrying mullet dimpling the surface, it’s an easy lure selection of a MirrOlure Soft-Dine to emulate their clumsiness. A hundred yards into my wade, I also notice shadowed potholes outlining the existence of my quarry. Despite the fading light, I’ve found my target. Twitching my rod with great emphasis, the bait’s surface retreat is attractive to me, and the intent I desire. A half hour later, my intuition proves true. As a purist, the gentlemanly handshake of a trout “thump” reverberating through the rod is an age-old acknowledgement to the purity of fishing. This cordial greeting not only merges the two worlds, but it becomes even more personal through a headshake and eventual caress. After a few quick photos and an easy release, I noticed my dad’s offering of a 5-inch KWiggler Willow Tail being greeted with the same hospitality. It was beautiful. Arched rod way up high, I could no longer distinguish his mature outward appearance. Instead, his youthful excitement transported him to an earlier time. It was gratifying, but a retreating sun told us it was time to head in. As we were making our way back, I couldn’t help but notice the silence. Each angler huddled around the grab rail of Mike’s console and never spoke. Instead, we all sat amazed at nature’s tranquility. It was evident we were all at peace. So as the hum of the motor gave way to a “No Wake Sign,” we came to rest under a stately but worn water tower with the inscription “Port Mansfield.” Another pilgrimage was complete to this wade-fishing heaven. Check out Chris Bush’s blog at thespeckledtruth.com for information on targeting trophy trout on the Gulf Coast.

to hide. Love bugs and the first cold front signal the arrival of the fall season. The Central Florida black crappie bite is on. Bass will readily take spinner baits like the trusted Johnson Beetle Spin, rattling crankbaits like the famous Rattle Trap, topwater chuggers like a Rebel Pop-R, and soft plastic worms (dark colors especially blue/black) and swimbaits like a Gambler EZ Swimmer. With high water levels, look for feeding largemouths in shallow, two feet or less. Crappies in the early season are found in the lakes, they move into the deep river bends after the second cold front.
To catch crappie, simply tie a small jig on 8 lb. test monofilament and tip with a minnow. Take that minnow-tipped jig to the up wind side of the lake and slow troll it behind the boat fishing with the wind at about 1.2 mph. The more rods you can deploy, the better. When you catch a fish, mark the spot on your GPS. When you get to the other side of the lake, go October is the month we expe- back and repeat making sure to rience the highest water levels troll over your newly found crapin the St. Johns River system. pie spots. Thanks to hurricane Irma, there is plenty of extra water for the fish
The wait is over for the much-anticipated speck season. Florida black crappie in the Harris Chain of Lakes will take center stage soon. The breeding season during full and new moons this October will be the most active feeding times for anglers targeting crappies. Minnows are going to be key early in the season, especially when trying to locate the Crappie. Find your deeper water, and get multiple rods out at multiple depths. Females stage deeper while males prep beds – move in shallow during the full and new moon when the bigger females head for the beds. There are reports at the shop of crappie busting bait on Lake Griffin in the State Park area already. Even more exciting for this year is the fish attractors that were placed last year by FWC - they have really been huge 2 ORLANDO

this summer for bass, and the speck experts predict a good season. On the bass side things are starting to look better as well. Our tournament weights went from about 1213 lbs. right up to 20-22 lbs. overnight. With the heavy amount of rain that we have had all summer, there is only one place you need to be moving water. Find the water moving, and have it continuously move for more than a couple of days and the fish are going to be stacked. Mouths of creeks like Dead River, Dora Canal, and Haines have been awesome for both largemouth and stripers. Weather is tolerable, and the fishing is good so the excuses for not being out should be few and far between. Hope everyone is ok following hurricane Irma - best of luck and tight lines.
depending on how thick the cover is. I also have a spinner bait or rattle trap rod rigged and ready to catch any schooling bass that come up.
Bass fishing on Lake Okeechobee has been excellent with the best being early mornings and late afternoon until about dark. The bream spawn is just about over but some can be found and caught on the beds using live crickets or red worms rigged on light spinning tackle. The morning and evening fishing offers a prime time to brush up on your top-water skills using a devil’s horse or zara spook or pop-r aiming for the holes in the grass edges. As the morning bite wains and the sun starts to get a little higher, I slow my presentation down but still fish the grass edges/ holes using worms and senkos worked slowly and methodically. I keep my flipping stick handy and ready to go to expound on the thicker grass clumps where it provides some shade for the bass. I typically have it rigged with a creature-style like a Gene Larew hoo-daddy or crawdad or senko,
I can’t wait for the first cold front in October to get the fish stirred up. I’m already noticing big groups of blue winged teal ducks heading south. Bass and crappie are preparing for the spawn; get ready for fall fishing action! Kissimmee Chain of Lakes West Lake Toho is producing good numbers of bass. The state sprayed the Kissimmee chain and canals in September. They are also spraying the boat runs throughout the thicker areas. Good places to fish are the edges of the hydrilla, and anywhere you can find a defined edge. Shiners fished right against the hydrilla works best. Other good areas are Goblins cove, the flood
Color patterns for plastics are junebug, red shad, green-pumpkin and black/blue. For shallow cranks stick with a shad or a bluegill or crawdad color depending on the water clarity and where you’re fishing. Areas on the lake to try the next time you’re out on Okeechobee: dynamite holes located off the rim canal; parts of east/west wall; around Rita/kreamer island and parts of observation shoal. Monkey box/Dupree bar especially around dyes ditch and point of horse island; parts of the north shore including the pass and a few areas on kings bar. To book Capt. months to target snook at Sebastian Inlet as long as water temperatures stay above 70 degrees.
The fall bait migration (mullet run) is in full swing on Florida’s Space Coast where concentrations of migrating baitfish can be found exciting both gamefish and angler alike. Triggered by shorter days, cooling water temperatures, and approaching cold fronts, pockets of mullet stream down the beach harassed by hungry predators. As the bait works its way south in the troughs of the surf, bluefish, ladyfish, jacks, Spanish mackerel, redfish and snook keep them hemmed up close along the surfs edge, with tarpon, blacktip and spinner sharks lurking in the waves eager to fulfill their position at the top of the food chain. Breeder redfish, tarpon, and snook take advantage of the easy meal as the fleeing mullet are forced away from the shelter of the shoreline. Additionally, October and November are the best
In the north Indian River and Mosquito Lagoons, higher water levels will allow anglers to venture into areas normally inaccessible during the spring and summer months. Look for slot redfish in close to the grassy edges along the shoreline shadowing pods of finger mullet, and for the larger redfish staged in deeper water ambush sites where migrating baitfish are schooling. In deeper water areas, look for ladyfish, spotted sea trout, jacks, and tarpon feeding on schools of glass minnows. These schools of fish are located by watching for bird and fish activity. Once located, these schools will produce explosive action on small top water plugs, or popping bug flies. Also, if you locate a school of the larger black mullet, try fishing Aqua Dream spoons or soft plastic D.O.A. Shrimp slowly under the school. Jacksonville did not suffer the loss of white shrimp that Central Florida did this season. The shrimp in the N.E. were small to medium (in August) and they are expecting the shrimp to be a nice size this month. The local Melbourne shrimping has been low key and the reports are zero to small counts. Picks may be sporadic but join up with the flotilla and pluck your share. This month fires off the white shrimp frenzy in North Florida, that is where the shrimp are in Florida and the action is hot! The Seminole Junior Anglers season was set to kick off with the first B.A.S.S. event on the Harris Chain of Lakes. Unfortunately, Hurricane Irma had other plans. The event was postponed and moved from the weekend of September 9th and 10th to September 23rd and 24th. The anglers look to start the season off with good finishes, and angler Joey Bloom looks to defend his team of the year title (won last year with partner Colon Blanton) with his partner this year, Dylan Westhelle. Joey and Dylan have fished the FLW and Central Florida High School trail events as a team the past two seasons, however due to previous B.A.S.S. rules requiring anglers to attend the same school to be able to fish together, they have not fished the B.A.S.S. events as a team. With the rules change this year, they will be fishing the B.A.S.S. Nation High School events as well as the new Bassmaster Florida High School trail together. This is a powerhouse team to keep an eye on. They will be going into their Junior Year of high school with two solid years of high school tournament fishing behind them. The organization will also be hosting a rod building class on October 21st. This event will be co-hosted with the help of Mud Hole Custom Tackle, and will be a great experience for these young anglers. Each angler who attends will gain valuable knowledge on how to construct fishing rods, and will walk away with their very own MHX custom rod. Finally, the date has been set for the 2nd Annual St. Johns River Bash Fundraising Tournament! The event will be held November 18th at the Boat Tree Marina on Lake Monroe and covered by Orlando Coastal Angler Magazine. Visit SeminoleJuniorAnglers.org for more information on how to register for the fishing tournament. This fun event will not only be host to a fishing tournament, but will also include awesome raffle prizes and local vendors from around the Central Florida area will have booths set up for the whole family to enjoy! All proceeds will benefit our high school anglers to pay for tournament entry fees and travel expenses for the 2017/2018 season. Thank you to our season and tournament sponsors, and Instant Insurance sponsoring this article allowing the accomplishments of this next generation of anglers to be shared with the Central Florida community.

OCTOBER 2017
October is here – this is my favorite time to fish all year. The month of October has many significant meanings especially the changing of seasons, Halloween, football and my favorite, the “fall mullet run”! This fall mullet run consists of countless fingerling mullet that migrate from our region. Mullet are the top bait that predator fish such as trout, redfish, and snook feed on. As most locals know, catching these predator fish during this event can be amazing. Anglers can expect the early morning bite to be its best in our inshore waters. Small noisy top water lures such as Heddon Saltwater Super Spook, Jr. (redfish or golden shiner colors) will work very well along the flats. When using this lure, anglers will want
Dinner time - Its mullet run time and nature’s dinner bell is ringing! Thousands of mullet will move south from all of our lagoons, Inlets, and beaches over the next couple of months. All the game fish we love to target will be looking to fatten up before the winter season sets in. Fishing in and around the mullet schools will produce reel screaming action as redfish, trout, flounder, and snook target these migrating bait fish. In the local lagoons and Inlets, and along Central Florida beaches look for additional hungry predators like tarpon, blue fish, cobia, and kingfish – they will feed on mullet during their fall migration south. Breeder schools of redfish have begun to form up throughout the area but heavy pressure from anglers and boat traffic has made them extremely spooky. A
to follow a simple approach to target trout. Make long accurate casts to a targeted area and fish the bait as quietly as possible. This is especially important when fishing during calm conditions. Anglers will want to concentrate their time fishing near schools of bait fish. Retrieving your bait slowly with a “walk the dog” side to side motion will be ideal. Many trout caught will have an average length of 17 inches with some fish measuring 20 plus inches. In addition, the snook bite will be very good. Snook will aggressively feed on mullet, live shrimp, pinfish, or bright colored scented jerk baits. Rigging these baits onto a 7-foot medium action spinning reel combo equipped with 20 pound test braided line and 25 pound test mono leader will work well. Snook have been known to feed along mangrove shorelines with steep drop offs, boat docks, and even bridge fenders that are lit up at night. Targeting them during low light conditions or at night under a full moon (October 5) will be best.
stealthy approach is the only way to hook up on these large breeder fish. Spooky fish are weary of rattling hard baits, throw lures without rattles. Try downsizing your leader and lengthen it, like 15lb. test fluorocarbon and a top shot of ten feet of leader. Migrating mullet schools will be the key to success. Work the wind and get in front of the schools then drift and wait for them to come to you. Quiet is the key, keep the noise down. Recommended baits: DOA Swimming Mullet, cut ladyfish, live pigfish and live finger mullet. This guide prefers to fish in 2 to 3 feet of water over broken bottom in and around mullet schools. Large trout and redfish will shadow the mullet schools. Use a stake system for anchoring; it will not tear grass beds like a traditional anchor. Keep a tight line and take a kid fishing the smiles and memories will last a lifetime. Recommended Baits: DOA Swimming Mullet, DOA Shrimp, Zara Spooks, 5” soft plastic jerk baits.

MULLET RUN! BY PAUL MCGINNIS
Around the end of August, I pack my surf fishing gear in my truck and it stays there until sometime in November. It’s all for the fall mullet run, the fastest paced fishing season of the year. If you’ve heard of the mullet run, want to try it out but aren’t sure where to start; here is my quick rundown of the who, what, where, when and how of the fall mullet run. Who - This one’s easy, you, me and anyone else interested in lots of fish catching action for everything from a one-pound jack all the way up to triple digit tarpon and sharks. What - The mullet run is a mass migration of mullet, from fingerlings to full sized adults that migrate down the east coast of Florida every fall. Every inshore fish in Florida that eats mullet can be caught during the mullet run. Incredible numbers of bluefish, jack crevale, ladyfish and Spanish mackerel harass almost every school of finger mullet passing our coast. Snook, redfish, seatrout and flounder prowl the inlets, jetties and the first trough along the beach. Giant tarpon will ravage the mullet schools, especially during the first half of the run, and sharks of all sizes shadow the bait pods and readily chase down topwater plugs or any bluefish, jack or other fish you happen to hook. Where - Mullet pods will be moving north to south along east central Florida beaches. Most of the surf mullet will be found from right against the shore out to a hundred yards or so. Jetties and inlets are good places to fish as they form natural choke points that seem to congregate the passing bait schools and predators. Some of the mullet come in through the inlets and will migrate down the intracoastal waterway. Regardless of whether you are fishing the beach, inlet or lagoon, the best place to cast your line is where the bait pods are the thickest. If you are lucky, hundreds of mullet leaping out of the water, fleeing hungry predators, will tip you off to the locations of the bait schools. Diving birds can also help you find the fish. On sunny days, don a good pair of polarized sunglasses (I use Hobie Hydro Series Sunglasses) and the bait pods will show up as moving dark spots in the water, looking much like the shadow of a small passing cloud. In the surf, good polarized glasses will help you spot mullet in the faces of incoming waves, and if you have a trained eye, mullet schools reveal themselves by subtle ripples on the surface that are often referred to as nervous water. When - The first schools of migrating mullet typically arrive in central Florida around the end of August. The run is at its peak about mid-September until the end of October. Usually the last bait schools and accompanying predators leave our coast by mid to late November. Mullet schools tend to come through in waves. Some days there is nary a mullet to be found while other times bait pods will darken the water as far as the eye can see. Obviously fishing is best when mullet schools are most numerous. That being said, I find there is almost always a good bite the first couple hours of daylight in the morning. 8 ORLANDO
cam october2017.indd 8
OCTOBER 2017
Another important consideration is the mullet run coincides with the peak of hurricane season. Tropical weather systems and cold fronts can produce rough seas and squally weather that make fishing impractical for days, sometimes weeks at a time. For this reason I like to fish the mullet run whenever I can because I never know when bad weather may keep me from fishing for an extended time. In my opinion, chores can wait for the bad weather days. Fish while the fishing is good. How - Just about any bait or lure that resembles a mullet will get eaten during the mullet run. A live finger mullet is a no-brainer. Pin it to a 2/0 to 5/0 Daiichi circle hook tied to a couple feet of 50-60 pound mono or fluorocarbon leader and use a sinker just heavy enough to keep it on the bottom. Dead finger mullet and mullet chunks work almost as well as a livie, and any mullet imitating lure will work. I tend to favor plugs and spoons most days over soft plastics as there are usually plenty of bluefish, mackerel and other sharp toothed predators to shred up your supply of soft baits. My favorite lures are topwater plugs, especially in the morning. Inferior topwater plugs can get destroyed by some to the big, tough fish you can encounter during the mullet run so use lures designed specifically for heavy duty saltwater applications. One lure that has served me well over the years and is inexpensive is the Offshore Angler Pencil Popper in the smaller 5-1/4 inch, 1-1/4 ounce size. I find most plugs, including the Offshore Angler come with hooks that can be straightened by a big fish so I swap out the stock hooks with Daiichi 7x D98Q treble hooks in the 1/0 and 2/0 sizes or in-line single hooks like the VMC ILS 3/0 to 6/0. A typical setup for mullet run fishing is a 4000 sized reel spooled with 20 pound test braid. If you want to target sharks and tarpon up your line to 30 to 50 pound test and choose a reel that can hold 300 yards or more. Standard seven foot rods work for inlet, jetty and inshore work and for fishing the first trough along the beach. For casting big plugs and spoons in the surf I like a nine foot surf rod like the Okuma Cedros CSXS-902MH. An entire book could be written on fishing the fall mullet run. Hopefully there is enough here to get you started. When the weather is nice I urge you to head out to the beach or inlet for what could be the most frenetic, exciting fishing of the year.

Midway through college football season and the Reel Knights are in our prime. The weekends are filled with fishing or tailgating, sometimes both. Each are getting us away from that school mindset and having a good time. Trips to Mosquito Lagoon have been productive with members finding time to get out there and get results with the redfish and trout. The freshwater pond hoppers had their thrills at the UCF Reel Knights Bass Bankhopper tournament with 1st place getting a cash prize along with some awesome gear from our sponsors over at Costa, Aftco, and Guy Harvey. With regard to UCF football, the club tailgates have a new addition this year. After years of “gathering wisdom” several Alumni members have returned with advice that resulted in the ultimate tailgate cart. Built by a current member of the club, it is equipped with a gas grill, wheels, cabinets, and working sink (creatively run through a bilge pump). This five-foot-long piece of beauty has taken tailgates to the next level. Also, special thanks goes out to our sponsor Costa for providing new pop-up tents to keep us out of the sun and afternoon rain this football season. The Reel Knights are looking forward to our annual semester Inshore Tournament on October 21st. This tournament is hosted by the UCF Reel Knights and is open to club members as well as the public. If you think you have what it takes come on out! The tournament takes place in the Mosquito Lagoon/Indian River and the angling team with the biggest redfish and trout will take home 1st place with prizes from our sponsors, cash payout, and of course bragging rights until spring. For more information on this tournament visit our website at UCFFishingClub.weebly.com as well as our Facebook and Instagram pages! And as always, a special thanks to Hell’s Bay Boatworks for giving us the opportunity to have a Reel Knights column and thank you to Orlando Coastal Angler Magazine for supporting the UCF Reel Knights.

As the fall mullet schools dwindle, flounder will become frequent catches around Port Canaveral, Sebastian Inlet, and Ponce Inlet. Targeting the Intercostal lagoons and beaches is a great way to intercept the flounder as the baits push out of our backwater areas and make their way offshore for the winter spawn down south. Fish with small live baits (fishfinder rig), Slayer Inc. SST’s paddle tail with jig head, or small bucktail jigs (tip w/strip bait) on drop-offs, around structure, bottom transitions, and sand to rock/oyster areas to find the concentrations of fish. Slowly work your baits close to the bottom and be ready with the landing net! A great many trophy flounder have been lost by holding their head out of the water. Flounder have a Houdini Ninja magical way of spitting the hook as they shake their head on the surface. To get the flounder simply put your landing net a few feet under the water and glide your tasty treat in. Port Canaveral stands as the calmest “inlet” for anglers to target flounder. However, what Port Canaveral lacks in sketchy moving water, it more than makes up for in large/small boat traffic. It pays to understand the posted security rules. The fall flounder migration is a great time to test your angling skills on a challenging opponent. Not to mention the flounder is one of our best eating fish on the Space Coast. Top water plugs will account for violent strikes as large gator sea trout on both coasts consume every ounce of protein before the coming cold. With late fall spotted sea trout it’s not the when or how, success lies with the where. To find steady action seek out shallow flats closely associated with deeper holes and residential canals. The bait and trout will stay on those flats until cold snaps drop the water temperatures enough to start the deep-at-night, shallow-in-the daylight patterns. Do your looking now because these spots can produce through the spring. Working top water plugs, like the MirrOlure Top Dogs, Top Dog Jr., and Rapala’s Skitter Walk in low light hours will produce. Best-bet colors are: sea trout, red and white, chartreuse, and bone. Remember to treat and release these larger breeder seatrout with great care as they are the future of the fish stocks.

ollowing up on decades of flagging participation in outdoor sports, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has some good news for fishermen and the fishing industry. Fishing participation in the U.S. is up nearly 20 percent over the last 10 years. This comes from the recent release of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s initial report of the 2016 National Fishing, Hunting, and Wildlife-Associated Recreation national survey. The survey, conducted every five years in partnership with the U.S. Census Bureau, also shows that anglers also increased their overall spending by 2.4 percent during the past five years. Overall, fishing participation increased 8.2 percent for individuals 16 to 65 years of age over the last five years. This is the highest level of participation since 1991. Revenue from equipment purchases to all trip expenditures also increased from $45 billion to $46.1 billion in the last five years. To see a press release on the report that lays out numbers on increases in participation in hunting, fishing and wildlife activities, go to www.doi.gov.

is answer didn’t surprise me. “We sell fishing tackle and pride ourselves in giving the customer what he wants,” the senior executive insisted. “Each of more than the two hundred rods in front of you was built with a special store-action. When the fisherman picks it up and waves it around like a fencing foil, it feels right to him and he buys it.” Suggesting that the true test of any fishing rod takes place on the water seemed like an exercise in futility at the time. It was painfully obvious that his designers lacked long-time experience of casting to bluefish or bonefish or tangling with tuna and tarpon. These shortcomings did not stop this company from becoming an important factor in the industry. The thought of trying to educate the consumer was as foreign as another language. Fishermen fall into the rut of comfort and convenience, with most anglers responding less than enthusiastically to any type of innovation that strays from the norm. I would be remiss if I did not point out two exceptions. With the advent of graphite as a rod building material rather than glass and all the publicity, rod buyers began to accept the newer material. Since then, there are even more material changes that make rods stronger and lighter. With the new materials, the need for metal ferrules becomes obsolete, and it is now possible to make multi-section rods. To this day, the party boat fisherman saddles himself with a short, stiff rod that can be tucked under the arm while bellying up to the rail. It’s been like that for decades. The thought of a slightly longer rod that allows one to flip a bait or lure away from the boat or battle a fish so it doesn’t wrap around several lines doesn’t even enter the picture. Anyone who deviates from the norm is looked upon as an angler who has little knowledge of the sport. There is no all-purpose rod. Every rod is a compromise. The key

fter a two-hour run into the open Gulf of Mexico, there they were on the horizon. Two shrimp boats marking the spot like an X on a secret treasure map. As they sat culling their catch, the shrimpers created a feeding frenzy of silver and black missiles exploding on the surface like a Fourth of July fireworks finale. We could see the tuna bite was in full force from quite a distance, and with virtually no wind the fishing gods were giving us the perfect chance to trade our conventional tackle for fly rods.
CANGL_FIL1-FIL4.indd 4
to choosing the right rod for your needs lies in ranking the factors such as the ability to present a bait or lure effectively or the desire to fish light lines or the power to battle heavyweights of the sea where lifting power is a necessity. More than 50 years ago, a small group of light tackle pioneers custom built rods to battle big fish. The butts on these rods were never more than 10 inches long. If you saw one in a store, you would instantly think someone did not know how to build a rod. The short butt let you keep your elbows at your waist when fighting a big fish. This reduced fatigue dramatically during a lengthy battle. Your arms and back did not hurt. No matter what anyone claims, the only meaningful test of a rod’s performance takes place on the water under combat conditions. If it does the job for you, it’s a good rod. If it fails in the war zone, explanations or excuses are meaningless.

www.COASTALANGLERMAG.COM As I began casting, fish after fish came racing up to my fly only to turn away at the last second. “I need to strip faster,” I thought. On my next cast, I put the butt of the rod under my arm and used both hands to work the fly as fast as humanly possible. From under the white-feathered fly came my quarry sky rocketing some 3 feet in the air before streaking 200 yards into the depths, taking my fly and plenty of backing with him. That’s when the real work began. For the fly fisherman, the lack of lifting power gives the fish a distinct advantage. It becomes a game of inches, and he already had the edge. But persistence paid off, and 20 minutes later the tuna came over the side of the boat. If you’ve ever caught tuna, you know they are a blast with explosive strikes and blistering runs. On a fly rod, the thrill is ten-fold, and the process is not that difficult. Unlike sight casting to a skittish permit, these fish are not boat shy and when in a frenzy will hit anything that is seemingly trying to get away. Also, adding a little chum to the water to pull the fish closer will eliminate the need to make long, accurate casts. You will need to strip fast… really fast. Tuck the rod under your arm and use both hands. Sweeping the rod to the side at the end of a retrieve will also keep the fly moving and give you a more time with the fly in the water. The gear: A 20-pound tuna needs a 12-weight rod to give the angler any chance of lifting the fish after a sounding run. I find a G Loomis GLX and NRX rod with a Galvan Torque Tournament reel works great. You have enough lifting power, backing and retrieve rate to get the job done. For flies, any good baitfish profile works well and even poppers elicit jaw-dropping strikes. I’m partial to all white, but white with a blue or green back works well too. When it comes to fly fishing, don’t get caught just thinking about inshore species, there’s a lot of fun to be had offshore too. Will Robinson is a seasoned tournament angler who has been writing about fishing for two decades. Check out Galvan reels at Galvanflyreels.com.

urricanes are devastating on land, and they can also be deadly to the fish we love to catch. Here’s a quick look at what goes on in the water during a big storm. The upper levels of the ocean are typically arranged by temperature and salinity. Colder, saltier water lies below warmer, fresher water near the surface. A hurricane mixes everything up, resulting in a muddled and more homogeneous upper ocean. The surface water is cooler and saltier than it was previously was, and deeper water is warmer and less salty. In very shallow coastal areas, the large amount of fresh cold rainwater from a hurricane can reduce the temperature and salinity of the near-surface water. Intense hurricanes can generate 60-plus-foot waves. Damaging currents can extend down 300 feet below the surface and are capable of dismantling coral reefs, relocating ship wrecks, breaking oil pipelines and displacing huge volumes of sand on the seabed. Larger marine animals such as sharks seem to be barely affected
by all the uproar. They can detect tiny changes in pressure as larger waves approach, as well as the reduced surface pressure associated with the storm, and they also swim deeper or leave the area. However, hurricanes have been known to result in dead marine life due to reduced amounts of dissolved oxygen in the water, rapid salinity changes and violent surf. Marine life suffers for months to years from the death and destruction following a hurricane. Here are some reasons fish kills follow major storm events: • Freshwater flooding from rain or saline storm surge may trap fish in an inappropriate salinity. If this happens rapidly and the fish have no escape, species intolerant to changes in salinity may die. • Low dissolved oxygen is by far the most common cause of post-storm fish kills. When oxygen levels get too low, fish essentially suffocate. Wind action in small lakes or ponds may push surface waters to one side of the lake. Water from the bottom rises to the surface, bringing with it sediments and organic materials from the bottom. Water from the bottom is low in oxygen, and bottom materials may include hydrogen sulfide. In high concentrations, hydrogen sulfide can be lethal to fish and is responsible for “rotten egg” or “sewage” odors. Bacteria in the sediments are also brought to the surface; these bacteria decompose the organic material from the bottom, using up oxygen in the process. This whole event is termed a “turnover,” since literally, the bottom comes to the top. Long periods of cloudy days can also lower dissolved oxygen levels. In aquatic ecosystems, microscopic organisms and aquatic plants carry out photosynthesis, which uses energy from sunlight to create carbon-based nutrition. Oxygen is a by-product. When there are long periods of cloudy days, these organisms produce less oxygen. Under these conditions, it does not take long before there is little oxygen left for fish. PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT ICEMULE PRO XL Seeing the need for a portable cooler that is actually a real cooler and holds real ice, ICEMULE founder James Collie set out on a mission to change the way the world views coolers. The result is the world’s coldest, most portable and toughest hands-free soft cooler. It can be worn like a backpack. The ICEMULE Pro XL is a high-capacity 33-liter cooler that keeps ice better than many hard coolers. They retain solid ice for more than 24 hours, and the Pro XL is large enough to hold 24 cans and ice. That’s a lot of space to carry provisions for your next adventure comfortably on your back. ICEMULEs are built of the highest-quality materials and fasteners. Their proprietary MuleSkin fabrics are extra tough to stand up to the most punishing conditions. There are no seams; welded construction ensures the Pro XL is completely waterproof. And the cooler’s roll-top, which works like a dry bag, is air-tight and allows easy access without jamming zippers. With padded backpack straps, ventilated back pads and a sternum strap, weight distribution is optimized to comfortably carry a heavy load. Whether it’s a hike into the backcountry or a long walk down to the beach, you’ll be glad your cooler is an ICEMULE.

h, the fall. It brings us colorful foliage, football, fresh apple cider and big ornery brown trout. When the mercury begins to take the plunge and daylight starts to dwindle, big mature brown trout start their yearly routine of procreation. What follows is a feeding binge of mature trout. Fish that have been uncatchable all summer throw caution to the wind. This is not the time for small flies and delicate presentations. Big gaudy nymphs and large streamers are the name of the game in fall. Large stonefly patterns like Girdle Bugs and Pat’s Rubber Legs are good choices as are the usual generic mayfly patterns like Hare’s Ears and Pheasant Tails, just opt for

a size 8 instead of an 18. My personal favorite fall flies are streamers, and something with a little bit of color, too. For some reason big fall browns seem to like streamers with a bit of orange in them. Sculpin patterns can be especially deadly this time of year. Whether it be the giant protein-packed snack a big sculpin delivers or a triggered attack response implanted in trout to protect their roe, it should be used to your advantage. It is also the time for stealth. With overly large trout sometimes holding in ridiculously shallow water, being sneaky pays huge dividends. Wear drab colored shirts at the very least. Even a camouflage jacket is not too far fetched. I normally work a river upstream, but this is not the case when fishing fall streamers. I’ll work it down. I can be much quieter and more stealthy when walking with the current as opposed to against it. If possible, stay on the bank as much as you can. Most fish will hit on the swing, so the area you expect the take to come will be downstream of your location. If you were working upstream, you could have already spooked a fish. Cast across, swing it down, take a few sneaky steps down stream, think about it, cast across, swing it down. Walking the river is crucial. Don’t just haphazardly crash through the water on your way to a good run. Hunt the river this time of year. Take a few steps and watch. This is where a good pair of polarized glasses are worth their weight in gold. Look over the entire stream, not just the typical haunts. You may be pleasantly surprised and amazed by what you’ll see. Trout will still be positioned in good usual runs too, but much more apt to attack your offering. Instead of heading to the deer stand or taking up a spot on the couch to watch the big game, get out on the stream. Just maybe, a kyped-up, big old slab of spotted butter will end up in your net. he dry brisk November morning air is a welcome change to Florida’s Forgotten Coast residents, but not just for the obvious reasons. The summer heat has lifted, and the mighty red drum is hungry and looking to fill her belly with whatever kind of crustacean or finny fish she can get close to. As you move stealthily along the marsh, you search for the signs: a wake along the grass line or a tail piercing the water’s surface. Either one is worthy of a cast and, if presented properly,
can result in the silence of the morning stalk being broken by the crash of a topwater plug being engulfed, the scream of a reel’s drag and some enthusiastic expletives. Stalking the skinnies of the marsh can be a challenging experience. Reds spook easily, so stealth is a must, as are accurate and purposeful casts; all this is what makes the hunt so rewarding. The waters of Franklin County are teeming with reds, making the chance of fooling, fighting and releasing a mighty red an extremely attainable and rewarding experience. If you come to this area to chase reds, any shallow-drafting boat will put you in a position for success, but some are better suited than others. Ideally, the ability to pole, paddle or scull your vessel will give you the advantage of stealth, but a trolling motor and a well-planned use of tides and wind also works well on the flats. Franklin County TDC is giving away a free red fishing excursion this month, so enter for your chance to win and make your redfish dream a reality. The reds and so many other fish are abundant in some of the most beautiful places on earth, right here. Don’t let another fall go by without experiencing this amazing time of year along Florida’s Forgotten Coast. For more details or to sign up, go to: www. floridasforgottencoast.com. EXPERT ADVICE
See the Fish
DAVID MANEY, FOWLER’S SUNGLASSES
W
alking a shallow trout stream, casting to structure in lakes or making sure you’re going after the biggest fish in an offshore school you need functional high performance UV sunglasses to see beneath the water. One pair may not fit the function for each of these varied UV demands. Shallow streams with bright sunlight require amber for most people. Deeper murky waters and overcast conditions need grey or amber. For offshore with bright sun and the need to see deeper into the blue waters, your best bet is blue mirror or grey. As an avid angler and someone who’s been involved in the sunglasses industry for over 20 years, my advice is to always try to match the sunglasses to the condition. This requires keeping several different UV’s with you. Most sunglass cases come with clip-on attachments so keeping a few pair of sunglasses with you has never been easier. As the conditions change during your day, you’ll be prepared to match your UV formula with the change. Once you’ve prepared yourself for these UV changes you’ll be on top of your angling game no matter what.
For the best overall coverage in any condition I recommend one pair of blue mirror/grey and one pair of green mirror/ amber. This simple modification in your sight fishing tactics will make a huge difference in your angling success. Tight Lines, David Maney Fowler’s Pharmacy 888-340-9021 www.FowlersSunglasses.com

FLY FISHING
D
uring the fall and winter, there is not a better saltwater game fish to target with a fly rod than redfish. Plentiful throughout the Gulf States, the redfish provides a great fly fishing opportunity for anglers of all skill levels who want to sight fish in shallow clear water. I’ve always considered the redfish to be the perfect saltwater game fish. It offers the angler a perfect venue to hone his or her sightfishing skills. Why? Because of two important factors: accessibility and plentiful fishing opportunity. From a logistical standpoint, most anglers can book a flight for great redfish destinations from most major cities in the U.S. Texas, Louisiana, Alabama and the panhandle of Florida are prime winter redfish spots. Each of these locations has experienced fly fishing guides who are knowledgeable and professional. Access to the marsh flats, where the redfish live in the winter, is quite easy and the number of redfish you see in a day can be mind blowing! Three factors for successful sight fishing to Redfish: 1) Can you see the fish? Visibility is the most important factor when sight fishing in shallow water. It’s great when you have a bluebird day and you’re seeing the fish from 100 yards away. However, Mother Nature usually has her own ideas on conditions. So, being able to identify fish even in tough lighting is important. Look for odd shapes in the water, V shaped wakes or even a subtle dimple that breaks the water’s surface. These are all signs of redfish feeding in an area. TIP: Use yellow polarized lenses. These will provide better contrast under tough lighting conditions. 2. Can I make a short cast? Many redfish are hooked 20 feet or less from the boat. Believe
me, the short cast is the toughest cast to make when sight fishing to redfish. Why? Because we are so focused on perfecting the 60-foot cast and neglect the importance of dropping a cast less than 20 feet from the boat. The 60foot cast is important, but it rarely comes into play when sight fishing to redfish. Work on your short cast as well. TIP: Work on a flip cast. Only cast the head of your fly line at targets on your left and right sides at 10 to 20 feet max. 3) Where should I place the fly? Redfish can see very well. I’ve seen them chase a fly from 20 feet way. However, I find placing a fly a couple feet in front of their noses works best. Once you’ve made the cast, let the fly settle to the bottom. As the redfish moves toward the fly, begin to move the fly with short strips. Once the redfish sees the fly, it will swim over and inhale it. At this point all you have to do is keep the rod tip on the water and strip strike to set the hook. TIP: On an open lawn, place small Frisbees at 5, 10, 20 and 30 feet from your casting position. Work on placing the fly in the center of each Frisbee without a false cast.

n May, Minnesota angler Jake Robinson tied his own catch-and-release state record with a 49-inch flathead catfish from the Minnesota River. Mark Mosby, of St. Anthony, Minn., had apparently seen enough of that mess. In August, he went out on the St. Croix River and hauled in a massive flathead that measured 52 ½ inches in length and 32 inches in girth. Minnesota DNR recently announced that it is the new state record for the catch-and-release category. Actually, Mosby describes himself as an occasional angler.
