Bay an industry leader in today’s outdoor apparel industry. Always in the forefront of new fabric technology, Bimini Bay has also been a manufacturing leader in creating moisture management systems. Now, with the introduction of their BloodGuard line, they have set a new standard in the industry. Try one of these new BloodGuard shirts for yourself. Blood washes right off with only water. No more bringing detergents or peroxide on the boat or dock to spare your favorite fishing shirt. Living The T
he origins of Salt Life are pure. With two simple words in a scrawling font, the iconic brand began as a tattoo inked on the backs of a couple of surfing fishermen in Jacksonville Beach, Fla. Four hard-core watermen began grassroots promotion of the design in 2003, selling bumper stickers and T-shirts. During the humble early years, no one foresaw the eventual scope of the worldwide phenomenon they had launched. Salt Life has come to represent everything everyone loves about the ocean. At a glance, the now-familiar logo proudly displays a love of the saltwater lifestyle. Fisherman and diver Jeff Stillwell, who just happens to be president of Salt Life, said he is blessed to be part of the phenomenon. “Whatever attracts you to the water, Salt Life represents that,” he said. “If you happen to love to fish, it means fishing to you. I happen to be an avid diver. It means diving to me. If you’re a surfer, it means surfing. If you just like hanging out on the beach and enjoying a cold beverage, it means that.” No longer just T-shirts and decals, Salt Life has grown to include a huge assortment of gear and apparel. Two concepts accompany all their offerings. The first holds true to the original message, a devotion to the coastal lifestyle and its fashions. The second builds on those roots by coupling fashion with performance in gear and apparel that helps customers better enjoy water-based activities. From high-performance sunglasses, featuring the best Zeiss polarized lenses, to technical clothing for fishing, surfing, diving, paddleboarding and beach-sitting, Salt Life has you covered. Stillwell mentioned Salt Life’s new Fusion Performance Pocket Fishing Shirts as an example of innovative design that will appeal to anglers. It’s got UV30 sun protection and ventilation, and it’s got something else you won’t find on other fishing shirts. “It really came upon me sitting on the back of a boat, fishing a tournament,” Stillwell said. “Every time that reel goes off, you start looking for things. I don’t know why no one has ever done this, but we took one of these high-performance shirts and put pockets on the back of it. When that reel goes off, I don’t have to look for gloves or a pair of pliers. Whatever I need, I’ve got it right there with me. ’Cause once I get in that chair, I’m going to be there for a while.” Only an angler would recognize the need for this kind of design, and it’s this kind of innovation that has made Salt Life a lot more than just a cool logo. Stillwell said they’ve got a line of waterproof gear on the horizon, and he’s excited about the territory expansion of Salt Life Lager. Yep… Salt Life launched an easy-drinking beer to celebrate its 15th anniversary in 2018. “It goes hand-in-hand with our lifestyle,” Stillwell said. “We’re all out there on the water for a great fun-filled day in the sun, and at the end of the day our customer loves to kick back, as do I, with a nice cold beer.” But all the fun, and all the success, comes with responsibility. Without healthy oceans to play in, there would be no Salt Life. The company has joined with conservation organizations like Artificial Reefs International and Roatan Marine Park in protecting and enhancing the resources so that future generations can enjoy living the Salt Life.

Poncho: “The World’s Best Fishing Shirt.” Poncho is a new company that makes just one thing: a fishing shirt. We like that focus. Poncho calls their shirt “The World’s Best Fishing Shirt.” We’re impressed with the fast-drying fabric and innovative magnetic pocket flaps, which you can easily open with one hand. He’s also a former Alaskan fly fishing guide, so he knows a thing or two about extreme conditions. Clay said, “I made the Poncho shirt for guys who are serious about being comfortable on the water and don’t want a bunch of gimmicks. I cut the velcro, loops and baggy pockets. This shirt is made to have everything you need—and nothing you don’t.” Get a free hat with purchase of a shirt with code COASTALMAG. Gillz Apparel –
By Anglers For Anglers
G
illz was started by a passionate angler, an angler driven by the need for one thing—performance. It’s evident in the style and quality of the Gillz brand. Started back in 2009, the idea was to design the perfect fishing shirt that would be lightweight, soft, comfortable and protective. This led to the first innovation – Cross Breeze Ventilation, which consisted of mesh panels under the arms and down the sides of the body. This allowed airflow through and under the shirt, making it even cooler and more comfortable. Other innovations followed, like a vented mask with “gills” for ventilation. This radical mask design offered unparalleled cooling and comfort. The technological innovations kept coming, and Gillz introduced CoolCore technology. CoolCore is a redesign of the actual structure of the fabric to make it cooler. Unlike most companies that simply apply a chemical to their fabric, which can wear off after repeated use and washings, CoolCore is a natural, chemical-free way to cool—up to 30 percent cooler than competitors. In addition, Gillz shirts are non-clinging and non-saturating. They wick sweat away from the body and offer UPF+50 sun protection. Gillz is designed for the passionate angler, the recreational fisherman, or anyone who lives an active outdoor lifestyle. The brand has grown from one innovative fishing shirt to a full apparel line. From tees, to high-performance shirts, to hats, to masks, sunglasses and hoodies, Gillz makes gear for every condition. Designs and patterns are constantly being updated, but the focus on performance is always a constant. Gillz considers making the most comfortable fishing shirt in the world an ongoing process, so innovation will always be of paramount importance. Gillz has come a long way from just making a simple fishing shirt. For more information, visit gillz-gear.com.

Center sp A Badge of Honor
O
ld Guys Rule was created to embrace a new breed of guys who have incredible energy, passion for life, wisdom gained from years of experience and the time to spend doing the activities they enjoy. Old Guys Rule gear should be worn as a badge of honor for a life well-spent, but not nearly over. Let’s face it, in today’s society if you’re over 40, you’re considered old. Old Guys Rule makes the statement: “So what?” We’re still having fun, still doing what we enjoy and, oh by the way, we’re in control. Don’t let the rest of the world try to tell you anything different. Old guys rule! Founder Don Craig brought the Old Guys Rule concept to the California surfing community in 2003. Its popularity quickly spread to include numerous genres and recreational pursuits. Now anglers can make their statement as well through a series of nine angler-themed shirts including bass, mahi, tuna and marlin. No matter where or how you fish, let the world know “You Rule.” For more information on Old Guys Rule offerings, visit http://oldguysrule.fishing or call 866-465-9640.

W
elcome to the challenge of spring fishing. I know a lot of people struggle to consistently pattern fish in the month of March, so I have put together a few key points that should help out. Although the days may warm up considerably, the
CANGL_FIL1-FIL4.indd 2
water can still stay chilly. The continuation of passing fronts can drop the water temperature quite quickly as it struggles to climb up the thermometer, keeping fish less aggressive. In March, I still hold onto some of the same structure I key on in the coldest months. Although I may start to mix in more shell and grass into my target areas, one thing that needs to remain from the cold weather handbook is quick and easy access to deeper water. With frequent cold fronts, although they may not have the same punch, the fish will still look to retreat to more stable water temps in the depths of a general area. The warmer and sunnier the day, the farther the fish will stray from that deep-water access, but they will not completely abandon its safety. I like to focus on the outer edge of the guts that lead from deeper water to the flats early, and I’ll follow them up on the flat as the day warms. With the fronts comes dreaded high pressure! Here are a couple tactics I rely on in this situation. First, and typically the most productive, is to downsize your lure. This is especially true in the spring when forage is young. I also like to go with a natural or translucent color patterns for a more natural approach. I tend to slow down and work lures closer to the bottom, as well, when the barometer is on the rise. My next approach, when nothing is working in a high barometer setting, is to do something completely opposite of what I just recommended. When all else fails, I tie on a very noisy lure that creates a lot of water displacement. This could be a noisy topwater, a noisy rattling lure or a lipped crankbait-style plug. At this stage, I am just looking for a reaction bite. If I can aggravate them enough, they just might take the bait. Although these techniques are polar opposites, I find the fish to be on one end of the spectrum or the other when dealing with high pressure. You just need to experiment and figure them out. Get out and enjoy the weather, and remember to take a kid fishing! Capt. Michael Okruhlik is the inventor of Controlled Descent Lures and the owner of www.MyCoastOutdoors.com.

GRAPHIC DESIGN Marlin-X LLC is a small company offing a big product. First introduced in 2008, the Marlin-X marlin decoy is a 60” long (tip of tail to tip of bill) lifelike marlin decoy that is 100% handmade in the USA. The life size marlin decoy is just that, a full size marlin decoy designed to be trolled behind any boat to give the illusion of a feeding marlin. The Marlin-X marlin decoys are the results of two years of product development by a NASA engineer. “During development we established our trade space boundaries and worked within: 1. The product must float, not sink if disconnected from the boat 2. It must be relatively large (60”length) but still easy to handle 3. It must to have action like a real feeding marlin 4. It must to be a quality product that customers are excited about 5. It must, above all, work to help a marlin boat attract more fish.” -Aaron Horning

The final product was a marlin decoy that swims and attracts other marlin much like a real marlin. Pull a Marlin-X marlin decoy behind a standard squid chain teaser and you will have the look of a real marlin in your baits all day. Marlin-X LLC has expanded the product line to include blue marlin, white marlin, sailfish and spearfish models. Every model will swim behind the boat and give a new angling advantage like no other. Jake’s Outdoor Adventures By Jake Worthington As many of you remember I repowered my Parker 2501 Center Console nearly two years ago with a pair of Evinrude 225 High Output G2 engines, replacing the pair of Yamaha 225 Four Strokes engines. After experiencing two summers of fishing, I can tell you I am very satisfied with the transition from 4 stroke to 2 stroke motors. The debate of 2 stroke versus 4 stroke engines can be discussed just like “which came first the chicken or the egg”, but until you actually experience both you really cannot fully understand some of the major differences. One of the main reasons I switched was because I no longer had to pull the boat out of the water every 100 hours and perform a 100 hour service. Having to do this would cost me a couple of days off the water. With the Evinrude G2, your don’t have to have to perform any service on the motor until 500 hours! Think about how much time and travel you will save not having to pull the boat out of the water having it serviced every 100 hours.

Another bonus I see in these engines is the increased power and torque they have. I fish out of Oregon Inlet and Hatteras Inlet and everyone knows these inlets can be somewhat dangerous and challenging at times. Evinrude’s two stroke power advantage helps me stay on plane and gives me the power to manage the heavy currents and seas I experience while crossing the bar. Also the ease of throttling the engines from higher to lower speeds helps me manage those wave sets that vary in spacing and size. Once out of the inlet, I get to experience the fuel efficiency of the Evinrude G2 by burning less fuel as I head to the Gulf Stream which is about 40 miles away. Another advantage I have experienced is the Evinrude ICON electronic controls. I have them not only on the lower console but also in the tower. In May and early June, I Cobia fish and there are days that Cobia can be very skittish and shy. One thing that has helped me put fish in the boat is not only the quietness of the engines, but the smoothness and the extreme quietness of shifting out of gear where the fish do not hear it. My previous controls and engines slammed in and out of gear and caused me to miss casting at fish because they were spooked and dove to the bottom. I contribute my successful 2018 Cobia season to my engines because they operate in a stealth mode and rarely give me away when I approach them free swimming on top of the water. As good as any motor is they are only as good as the dealer that services them. My dealer is Causeway Marina in Elizabeth City, and they make sure my motors run at peak performance. If you are thinking about repowering in the near future, contact them and discuss the costs and advantages of the Evinrude Etec G2 versus the other companies’ 4 stroke motors.

Should be strong showing of bluefins this months with a scattered two tone, (yellowfin) along the 100 fathom. Fun to test your tackle on these world beating bruisers. Early am and late evening seems peak times to get the bite. Closer in to the beach tog, big blues, and dog sharks could be a option. Last year we encounter red drum on some of the wrecks. That was pretty interesting. Dropping down double rigs coming up with double header reds, pretty cool. There were big cloudy marks of them. Inlet and backwaters stripers would be primary culprits to bite your jig. Days getting longer spring coming big drum and cobia are coming! Time to get your heavy spinning rods all ready to go. Get your reels serviced, Meathog jigs and punisher rods ordered, and make you’re you remember you knots and connections. Frayed braid gotta go in the trash and old leader retied. You want a two and three inch gaff this season don’t wait get it now before things really heat up! Good luck out there! Captain Aaron Kelly Rock Solid Fishing www.rocksolidfishing.com 252-441-6575

By Kristi Anderson, catchfishreports.com EASTERN NORTH CAROLINA One of the hottest fisheries this time of year is Eastern North Carolina! Captain Mitchell Blake of FishIBX reports that striper fishing in the feeder rivers in the Pamlico Sound such as the Tar, Neuse, and Pamlico River are heating up. This fishery has been seeing some healthy rockfish which have started a pre-spawn run up the Roanoke and Pamlico Rivers. The best thing going in Eastern NC is a mixed bag of crappie and striper hands down! Hit up FishIBX if you want in on the action while it’s hot. In the upcoming days the annual shad migration will kick into high gear so stay tuned! NORTH CAROLINA Out of Oregon Inlet, offshore boats are having some of the best action on tuna, mainly bluefin with some yellow and blackfin mixed in. Reports are coming in of scattered catches of black drum and red drum off of the point in Buxton and southern beaches. Look for tuna fishing to remain consistent, along with the red drum bite that will increase as water temperatures slowly warm back up. Bluefish will also start to be more prevalent so anglers will start looking to catch those chopper blues up and down the beaches as they make their way to inshore waters. VIRGINIA BEACH INSHORE Anglers looking to get on some quality fish this time of year have been successful during Virginia’s seabass open fishery! Seabass are among one of the best eating fish during this time of year and so they are often highly sought after, especially during the month of February! This is a onemonth fishery that is highly regulated with a no-cost permit requirement. Over the past few weeks, fishing the ocean wrecks in the Chesapeake Bay have been steady in producing some serious jumpos! Those who were looking to fill their coolers took full advantage during February until the season closed out with a bang! Tautogs are also available out at ocean wrecks as anglers have been successful with landing quality catches. Chopper bluefish have been plentiful and there for the taking. Anglers seeking them have been getting all the chopper blues they want. They have been making their presence known in and around the wreck areas and have been found mixed in with the seabass. The bluefish range from small fish up to about 33 inches long. That’s not all that February ended with…2 Orcas were spotted off of Virginia Beach on February 3rd. What I would have given to had been the one to spot them! Other boats have been venturing out to go whale watching this time of year and it has not disappointed. Beautiful humpback whales and Harbor Porpoises have also been seen cruising through near the Virginia Beach oceanfront. This should be a must on everyone’s bucket list, weather you’re visiting or just a local! In addition to all of the action in the bay, anglers have been catching their fair share of boston mackerel right off the beaches…talk about bluefin candy! This species makes for some great bait to take offshore if you’re looking to get on tuna. VIRGINIA BEACH OFFSHORE Offshore anglers out of the Virginia Beach area kicked off February with some quality catches of bluefin tuna. One angler landed an impressive bluefin that weighed in right at 290 pounds! Also mixed in with the bluefin have been catches of blackfin tuna, yellowfin tuna, and mahi-mahi. TIDEWATER AND THE OUTER BANKS Time for a New Boat? By John Tiger Though it makes more sense financially to buy used, there’s nothing like being the first to own a new rig. But if you’re going to spend all that coin, get what you want and buy it right: • Buy at the right time! There are great deals in the off season and during boat shows to entice buyers to buy. Cash back, “free” options and upgrades, financing incentives, extra warranty, free storage, even a free trailer are commonly used as bait for new boat buyers. Don’t be afraid to spend time with dealers going through all the deals. • The dealer’s representation and reputation is at least as important as the boat/engine brand and reputation. This is a very, very important lesson to learn. Boat dealers are not in any way like car dealers. In today’s world, it doesn’t matter where you bought your car-any dealer will service it with a smile. Not so with boat dealers; even today, they are still very territorial and will make no bones about servicing customers who bought from them first, and all others have to wait. That’s vital in a short boating season!
BUYING USED
Buying used is a great alternative. Used boats come with warranties too; it’s all in where you buy and the deal you make. Speak with local dealers before you consider; many won’t work on rigs older than a decade. Says Kim Hubbard, owner of Centerville Marina (www. centervillemarina.com) in Chesapeake, Virginia: “We broker boats for our good customers, but their boat must pass a $150 multiple-point check before we will stand behind it.”
• Don’t buy a rig older than mid-90s, unless it’s a “specialty” rig (a classic, or show boat). Quality has come a long way in the past fifteen years or so, and rigs built in the 2000s will be more reliable and easier to maintain. • Mercury MerCruiser and Volvo Penta are the only brands to consider if you’re looking at stern drive boats. Excellent outboards include all the modern brands: Mercury, Evinrude/Johnson, Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki and Tohatsu. If you stick to engines made 10 years ago and newer, you’ll be buying reliability and newer technology. • Try to find boats and engines that have documented usage hours. Typically, anything over 400 or so hours should be considered carefully; the lower the usage hours the better, with good maintenance and upkeep records. • Spend a little extra to hire a marine surveyor. This reveals any anomalies with the boat, and lets you know if you’re simply buying someone else’s headache. Surveyors can be found at the Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors (SAMS) and the National Association of Marine Surveyors (NAMS) websites.
REPOWERING
Most times, the boat outlasts the powerplant. If your boat’s still seaworthy and you feel no need to replace it, consider repowering. Outboard hulls are great for this, and there are many large outboard dealers who specialize in repowers. Rob Gina, owner of Boatwrench (www.boatwrench.com) in Orlando, Florida notes “We repower hundreds of outboard and stern drive hulls every year. It’s a viable option considering the cost of a new boat.”
Tips for buying used: • Check message boards on older models; ask lots of questions about durability, quality and reliability.

MARCH MAY COME IN LIKE A LION BUT FEBRUARY WAS A LAMB! by Jim Baugh reporting from Oyster Farm at Kings Creek, Cape Charles VA WOW! As I look forward to the future in March, I can’t help but reminisce how awesome of a month we just had. The weather was in the 50-70’s and not a snowflake in sight. While a lot of anglers put up there fishing gear for the winter, for us February marks one of our favorite fishing seasons, Sea Bass!! Jim Baugh Outdoors filmed on opening weekend Feb 2. On the first drop everyone on the boat just about limited out. We then moved to a nearby second offshore location and everyone had a blast catching all the sea bass they wanted. The limit was 15 per person and bait used was mostly squid and fresh cut fish as well as salted mackerel. They seemed to be hitting on everything. Big thanks to Trollpro for sending us another underwater housing for one of cameras. We lost one of our HD underwater cameras on this very same trip last year (and lost it on the first drop). This trip we were fortunate and made many deep drops with our deep drop camera rig and caught some of the best underwater sea bass action you will ever see. On camera we filmed a live double hook up! This footage also gave us a good idea of just how many fish were down there. You can watch the show on our Jim Baugh Outdoors Youtube Channel here: youtube.com/c/JimBaughOutdoors You can also view the show on our You need: Jim Baugh Outdoors or jim Baugh Facebook page. If you visit our channel, 6 Nori please hit the like and subscribe. Youtube likes it for some reason. 4 scallions chapped When sea bass season opens up again, I highly recommend you giving 1 Peeled and thinly sliced it a try. Always a great time. 1 Shaved and thinly sliced Upcoming Easter holiday plan on something special after church, carrot bunch of Italian a wonderful Easter Brunch at the Oyster Farm at Kings Creek in Cape parsley Charles. Hard to beat the food and the view of the Chesapeake Bay, it is 1 sliced avocado just awesome! Easter Brunch is 4\21\2019 you can make reservations just 1\2 stick butter visit their web site at www.theoysterfarmatkingscreek.com 2 cups sushi rice Sesame seeds Jim Baugh, Jimbaugh.net, Jim Baugh Outdoors TV 2 Boneless filets of fresh sea bass 2 tablespoons sesame oil 2 cups light soy First filet the sea bass and rinse with cold water. Be sure to debone the fish completely. Slice thin portions of sea bass and cover then chill in fridge. Next, thinly slice all veggies to be used in sushi roll. For the rice, I use whatever short grain rice I can find and first rinse the rice until the water becomes clear. Then cook in a pot and I add a little rice wine vinegar, salt, and a dash of fish sauce. Cook, then set aside. For the sushi rolls, you can roll the norie by first putting on a thin layer of rice, then what ever ingredients you have cut up. Prior to the roll, sprinkle some sesame seeds over top and then roll your sushi. It you nori is a bit dry, dampen your fingers and pad the nori. On some rolls I will take a small bead of water and wipe the seal, then always place the rolls seal side down on a plat, then cover with cellophane and put in fridge until all the rolls are made. BIG TIP: Many years ago I had all the tools for making sushi and had some great bamboo rolling matts, but through the year of moving, living on a boat, etc, they were lost. Living on the Eastern Shore there is no place to buy them either. NOT A PROBLEM! I just used a clean hand towel, doubled it over, then covered it with a sheet of cellophane. Not only does it work, but I seriously think it works better than a rolling mat. Now, you can make the sushi with any ingredients you like. For the sashimi we serve it plain as well as sitting on a small pad of rice. Of course we always serve with a side of wasabi and for dipping sauce I use a combo of sesame oil and light soy or teriyaki sauce. The sauce is also garnished with spring onions. Other items that are excellent to go with the sushi is flying fish roe (Tobiko), salmon eggs, raw quail eggs, pickled ginger etc. Next time I cross the bridge to the mainland I plan on stocking up on some sushi ingredients because I do love me some salmon eggs! I made this sushi platter for my wife Ms. Donna and she really went nuts for it. Sushi is awesome and sea bass sushi I prefer even over fresh tuna. It is that good! Tight lines, and good eats!

Fish Tales & Other Exaggerations My Pop and I continued our marine adventures for many years. I do think; however, our best times might have been on our 12-foot aluminum boat with the green 7.5 horsepower Elgin motor. Pop took the Coast Guard Auxiliary Boating Safety Course and like most of his academic endeavors, he studied hard to pass the course. I wondered why he would get out the charts and ruler to plot a course when we were just going over by the channel marker. He was pleased with his new knowledge and I think Mom and I were even more confident that he would return us to the beach without incident. After a few successful months of harvesting the bounty of the Bay, we were seasoned salts. We even had bright yellow raingear or as my father referred to them, our foul weather gear. I never liked calling them by that name, as I really didn’t want to be on the water when the weather was actually foul. I liked sunny weather with winds at 8 knots or less. I did have the understanding that we had bright yellow gear, so that the Coast Guard would have an easier time finding us in an emergency. In those days, there were no iPhones or androids. Radar wasn’t even a thought, let alone GPS. We were doing better than the first settlers, as we had an engine that worked slightly more than 50% of the time. The other times we got to row and work on our conditioning. We didn’t need a gym. This was a self-imposed workout that according to Pop was good for us and our inner man. As I was approaching my teenage years, I was given more responsibility. I was allowed to wash the car, take out the garbage and most importantly, filet the fish. My Dad was a pathologist and took slicing things very seriously. “Steady hand, a sharp knife and slice smoothly, do not saw.” In addition, I was also allowed to venture, within a small radius, out in the boat by myself. I had to maintain visual contact with our beach at all times and have the life preservers (yes, plural) ready for immediate donning. However, within the aforementioned parameters, I was free to roam the waves. I could get that boat going to at least 10 to 15 knots. I cannot tell you how liberating that feeling was with the wind in my face and the engine humming and smoking. While it may have looked more like a mosquito control boat, I didn’t care. I was the Master and Commander of my own ship and hadn’t even reached puberty! Aviation has a term, VFR, which stands for Visual Flight Rules. I was governed by VBR, Visual Beach Rules. So, back and forth I passed in my aluminum speed boat as it sputtered and smoked. Fortunately, gas and oil were cheap and over time, I think we even saw a decrease in the mosquito population when the wind was blowing onshore. Like most kids, I had a best friend growing up. His name was Bobby and we shared many adventures together. We were both “big boned” and I use this term rather than the word banished from our house, even today, “HUSKY.” I am still emotionally scarred by the salesperson who said to my Mom: “We have a Husky Department over there. I think that may fit your son better.” How insensitive of him. He could have said the Future Linebacker’s Department or Future Sumo Wrestler’s Department is right over there, Mam. No, he said husky and to make matters worse, there was even a sign identifying the Husky Department, in case myself and the other chubbers weren’t sure. So Bobby and I were labeled, but it did nothing to inhibit our enthusiasm for playing war games on the dunes or getting to the table for a meal. Now, we had a new mode of transportation, the boat. In celebration of my newly recognized achievement, I bought a Captain’s hat. Bobby had a sailor’s cap and off we went to the sea. I loved my best friend but he had one terrible habit. Bobby would repeatedly sing; “We are going off to sea to see what we can see.” Over and over, Bobby spewed these words. Had there been a plank on the boat, he would have had to walk it. One of the lessons to be learned was the inefficiency of drag. At my young age I didn’t have any good words to describe this force. I did understand that with two Big Boned boys, the boat did not go as fast. It was a time when I learned a lot about physics. I didn’t know that I was being schooled at the time, but in retrospect, there were lessons being taught. One of the biggest lessons was to not let anyone sit on the bow of the boat when we were shooting into a large wake. Bobby liked to sit with his legs over the bow and hang on the metal handle. One of our favorite things to do was to go full speed into the wake of one of the cruisers in the Intracostal Waterway. One time, we had perfect conditions with no wind and glassy water. I cranked up that 7.5 hp engine to its max and headed for this major wake. We hit the wake perfectly, but then there was an eclipse and a splash. Suddenly,
there was no Bobby on the bow. Bobby had been launched in the air, over my head and into the water. It was now apparent the eclipse was Bobby, the flying husky. Sure enough, there he was floating behind the boat, once the smoke cleared. I was surprised that he didn’t scream as he flew through the air. I guess our training as warfighters on the dunes taught him to be stealthy. (This also came into play, later, when there were couples in the dunes making out and we would crawl around in defense of our nation or just to see what was happening.) Amazingly, Bobby thought that this was a fun ride and wanted to do it again. I was thinking that I had killed my best friend and would have a hard time explaining why I was dragging him back to the beach lashed to the side of the boat. I knew that there was no way I was going to get his big boned self-back into the boat. Turned out that Bobby had something in common with my dog, Bubba, but that is for a future tale. So many memories, so little time.

SHOWS By Mike Buss
T
his month let’s talk about an easy way to acquire some local knowledge along with meeting some of the local experts in addition to meeting and attending seminars put on by some of the heavy weights in fly-fishing. I’m talking about the various boat and fishing shows that are held this time of year in just about all our communities. I just returned from attending the Fly Fishing Show in Edison, New Jersey. This three-day event is the largest fly-fishing show in the country and just about anyone who we would consider an expert was in attendance, and most of them conducted seminars or casting and fly-tying demonstrations. Fly shops from up and down the East Coast were also in attendance offering just about anything in the way of gear or fly-tying materials. Almost all the major fly rod and fly reel manufacturers were also there along with a couple of fly-casting pools to allow anyone to cast their choice of rod and reel combo. There were over 200 exhibitors including all the major fly fishing and outdoor gear manufacturers offering their latest products. Representatives from fly fishing destinations from Alaska to South America and all the hot spots in between were there to provide information and presentations on their individual locations. Fly tying experts lined the walls behind tables giving demonstrations of how to tie their latest creations. You could watch Bob Popovics, Steve Farar, Pat Cohen, and Page Rogers to name just a few of the over fifty tiers. There were also tying seminars by tiers like Thomas Balz, Henry Cowen, Gary Bolger, and Ed Engle. The women fly fishers were not left out as there was a Women’s Fly-Fishing Showcase with speakers and demonstrations conducted by women for women. This show travels around the country during the early months of the year and is well worth attending when it is in your area. There are also numerous local boat and fishing shows put on in just about all the major cities in our area. These are always worth attending because they have local experts talking about local waters and the best way to fish them. I strongly recommend attending one of these shows. If you haven’t attended one of them, you will be surprised at all the information you will receive. If you have attended one, you know what I mean.

Destination Fishing! By Tom Schlichter
St. Augustine’s Shallow Water Reds And Trout
Capt. Tommy Derringer of Inshore Adventures prepares to release a typical St. Augustine redfish taken from shallow waters on a quiet soft plastic. Photo courtesy of Capt. Tommy Darrenger.
W
ith a claim of being the oldest city in the United States, St. Augustine, Fla. is certainly rich in history. Stroll the streets and you’ll see Spanish colonial architecture, beautiful stretches of sandy beach and ample parklands awaiting exploration. Head out on the water, though, and you’ll also discover tremendous inshore fishing. “Redfish and trout action is really good in our inshore waters during the spring season,” said charter skipper Tommy Derringer of Inshore Adventures (www.Inshoreadventures.net; 904-377-3734). “There’s only a couple of months here when it’s clear enough to sight
CANGL_FIL1-FIL4.indd 4
fish, so you really want to take advantage of it. The action begins in January and lasts through March and into April. This is shallow water casting up on the flats and back in our numerous feeder creeks. Basically, any creek or flat between the Francis and Mary Usina Bridge and the Palm Valley Bridge is worth a shot.” According to Derringer, reds are easiest to spot on a dropping tide. The water is still pretty cold this time of year, so areas that warm quickly are where you’ll want to start. Look for oyster bars or shells on the bottom as the biggest draws, but if the tide gets really low depressions eventually hold most of the reds. Typically, inshore redfish in this area are “slots” weighing 2 to about 10 pounds. Casting a small soft-plastic minnow or grub with a light jig head is a productive and sporty way to get in on the fun. “You want to use a 2500 size spinning reel with a 7-foot medium-light action rod, 10-pound test braid and a lightweight white or chartreuse lure because fish can be spooky in the shallows,” noted Derringer. “Make long casts so as not to crowd your quarry, and choose a lure that lands with a soft splat rather than a big splash. Live shrimp and minnows work well, too, as long as they are presented gently.” If you can’t isolate reds, Derringer suggested backing out into the main channel of the Intracoastal Waterway and working edges and pockets for sea trout. This bite is best from late March into April as the water warms up. Try a MirrOdine Suspending Twitchbait, a soft plastic paddle-tail, or a live shrimp suspended beneath a float, and you’ll see plenty of action. Most of the trout here measure 16 to 20 inches, but if you pass on these and keep looking you might come across pods of bigger fish with some lunkers in the 5- to 8-pound class. If trailering your own boat, Derringer recommends launching at the Vilano Landing Boat Ramp. You can get bait and lures right across the street at The Bait Shack (904-217-3486). For overnight accommodations, The Inn at Comanche Harbor (904-825-0003; www. camacheeinn.com) is right next door to Comanche Cove Yacht Harbor (904-829-5676; www.comancheisland.com) where transient slips are generally available.

r spread Great Streams and Craft Beverages Await in Hendersonville, N.C. Photo by Nick Carter
I
f you’re an angler who enjoys following up a day on mountain trout streams with a refreshing craft beverage or two, cast your attention to the Blue Ridge mountain town of Hendersonville. This North Carolina town, about 22 miles south of Asheville, offers miles of stocked trout waters, as well as the popular Hendersonville Cheers! Trail. The two resources make it possible to spend the day catching three types of trout – rainbow, brown and brook – while spending an evening exploring three types of craft beverages – beer, wine and hard cider. First, the fishing part. North Mills River is the prime trout stream in the Hendersonville area. The river’s 4-mile section of delayed harvest waters receives an annual infusion of 11,000 trout from N.C. Wildlife, divvied between brook, rainbow and brown. Spring is a great time to fly fish the delayed harvest waters of North Mills River because no trout have been harvested since Sept. 30. Another hot spot for trout fishing is just across the Henderson County line toward Brevard. The Davidson River offers miles of public trout waters that receive annual stockings of 16,500 fish. Other lesser-known spots for fishing near Hendersonville include
three streams on the eastern side of Henderson County, about 20 to 30 minutes from downtown. Rocky Broad River has a 1.2-mile stretch of hatchery support waters from Rocky River Lane to the Rutherford County line near Chimney Rock, while Cane Creek, near the Fletcher community, has 1.5-mile stretch of hatchery supported waters. For those who really want a unique experience, Little River in DuPont State Recreational Forest provides not only a scenic setting for trout fishing, but also a unique one. Delayed harvest waters flow through undisturbed mountains and over several notable waterfalls. Those waterfalls were immortalized on Hollywood’s silver screen in The Last of the Mohicans, as well as the backdrop for the exploits of Katniss Everdeen in the original Hunger Games movie. When the fishing is done, the Cheers! Trail awaits. The trail is one of North Carolina’s best, featuring 16 craft producers offering a variety of experiences. Beer fans love Sierra Nevada’s tasting room, which is one of the largest on the East Coast and features an expansive patio and outdoor amphitheater, while Bold Rock Hard Cider has emerged as a national leader in the hard cider industry and regularly hosts live music (indoors and outdoors), along with cidery tours and a food truck. Several craft producers on the trail create small-batch beverages prized for their quality and originality. Three breweries – Southern Appalachian, Triskelion and Guidon – are within a few blocks of each other in the Depot District, while Sanctuary Brewing Co. is only a few blocks away on Main Street. Sanctuary is pet-friendly with a commitment to pet rescue. Three wineries produce high-quality wines from European varietals. The newest – Point Lookout Vineyards – is located atop a 3,000-foot mountain with panoramic views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Saint Paul Mountain Vineyards, the area’s first vineyard, is on farmland that’s been in the family for more than nine generations. And two miles from Saint Paul, Burntshirt Vineyards offers tastings in its renovated farmhouse overlooking rolling hills of vines. I am often asked when is the best time to plant fruiting plants. My answer is usually the same; the best time is 20 years ago or today. The second best time to plant is during the winter months. Plants are dormant, and can be easily shipped and planted with no stress on the plant because there is not a lot of maintenance once the plant or tree has been planted. Simply dig a good hole, water thoroughly
at planting, and take the rest of the winter off. Even though there are no signs of growth above ground, the root systems will have time to get adjusted to their new location and begin to initiate new root growth. There are plenty of advantages of growing your own edibles. First of all, you know what has been done over the course of the growing season from a chemical stand point. Second, the fruit just taste
better coming out of your home orchard versus buying fruit from the grocers that have little to no flavors. Thirdly, it is good for your soul and you will feel more connected to the environment and nature. Whether it is an apple tree, muscadine vine or a blueberry bush; now is the time to plant. s past president and current board member of IUSA (the organization that ratifies world records for spearfishing), I get to share the excitement of big fish applications. The entire IUSA board was amazed by a recent submission. We received word that Luis Viyella had speared a 480-pound yellowfin off the Dominican Republic on Dec. 23, 2018. If approved, this fish would not only be the new spearfishing world record, but it would also beat the current IGFA All-Tackle rod-and-reel record! The All-Tackle stands at 427 pounds, held by angler Guy Yocom and caught off Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Viyella supplied the required photos of the fish, the measurements, the weighing, and the certified scale. He provided witnesses and documented the “Story of the Hunt” which was well-written and riveting. Viyella was new to freediving and bluewater hunting but accompanied by an experienced friend. They were targeting wahoo that day when the tunas showed up. He was excited when his buddy speared a 125-pound yellowfin. As requested, Viyella added a second shot to the fish—a common practice to secure the fish and make the extraction quicker and easier. A bigger tuna showed up, but Viyella’s speargun was already discharged and embedded in the 125-pound tuna, so he called out for his new Daryl Wong speargun from the boat. It wasn’t a bluewater gun, and it wasn’t the ideal set up, but he needed to act quickly. Viyella attached a line and float to the reel gun, dove down, and fired a well-placed shot into the tuna. After attaching additional floats, he made headway in raising the tuna toward the surface. His buddy dove down and placed a second shot to the head, helped manage the lines, and kept sharks at bay until it was landed—all the things a good buddy does.
News of this magnificent fish traveled fast. Viyella was told that, if approved, his fish would eclipse the current spearfishing record of 353 pounds. During the application process, he learned the rules the hard way. In order to qualify, one must shoot and land the fish without assistance from others. It was heartbreaking for Viyella and the board, but his catch is still outstanding, and IUSA awarded a meritorious award. Viyella accepted it with grace and gratitude. He said, “Inside the boat, we realized it was a very extraordinary, giant yellowfin tuna. I cannot describe our feelings of gratitude to God, our emotions, joy, sense of achievement, cheers, hugs, screams of happiness. It had been the most amazing day at sea, and the most exciting catch ever, and I had caught, on rod and reel, a 900-pound blue marlin and 600+ pound swordfish before. This bluewater apnea spearfishing catch was a higher dimension, another level of joy and sense of achievement. Glory goes to God for His love and generosity.” Amen to that, Mr. Viyella! May you continue to be blessed with that same sense of wonder and joy, for that is the real treasure of the sea. Anglers Seek To Cement Legacies At 2019 Bassmaster Classic
T
he 2019 Bassmaster Classic, scheduled for March 15-17 on the Tennessee River, will feature the usual mix of established pro fishing superstars and hungry young pros who are destined to be the stars of tomorrow. The 52 anglers converging on Knoxville will be gunning for the largest share of the $1 million prize fund, and they’ll be aiming to establish their angling legacy by winning the most important title in professional fishing. Among the field are eight former Classic winners, including four-time champion Kevin VanDam of Kalamazoo, Mich., and defending champion Jordan Lee of Grant, Ala., who last year became one of only three anglers to claim back-to-back wins in the event. Seven of the pros have hoisted the Toyota Bassmaster Angler of
the Year trophy, including 2018 AOY winner Justin Lucas of Guntersville, Ala., and Aaron Martens of Leeds, Ala., who has claimed the award three times. “The Classic is a showcase for some of the most accomplished bass anglers in the world,” said B.A.S.S. CEO Bruce Akin. “You’ll have veteran pros out there who’ve experienced the huge stage that is the Classic and excelled in that environment in the past. But you’ll also have some young guys who are just chomping at the bit to make a name for themselves. “That’s one of the most exciting things about the Classic—it literally will change someone’s life forever.” Anglers hungry for first-time Classic glory include Florida’s Drew Benton, Tennessee’s Brandon Lester and Arizona’s Clifford Pirch — just to name a few. Whoever wins the event, the immediate effects will be easy to see. There’s the world-famous Classic trophy, which weighs more than 40 pounds and is easily the most coveted piece of hardware in professional fishing. Then there’s the $300,000 first-place check and the chance to stand before an arena full of screaming fans as confetti cannons set the stage for the accomplishment of a lifetime. This year’s weigh-ins will be held in Thompson-Boling Arena on the campus of the University of Tennessee. As always, the Classic will be held in conjunction with the fan-favorite Bassmaster Classic Outdoors Expo presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods. Known as the most important consumer show in the bass fishing world, the Classic Expo will be held in the Knoxville Convention Center and the adjacent World’s Fair Exhibition Hall. Companies from across the fishing industry use the Expo annually to debut new products, and fans will be able to purchase many lures, rods, reels and accessories for the first time anywhere. For more information about the Bassmaster Classic, go to www. bassmaster.com.
Blue Wild Ocean Adventure Expo
T

Baja’s Inshore Action
On The East Cape
By Nick Carter Big cubera snapper are just one of the species waiting inshore on the East Cape. This one was caught by Jim Rodriguez, a cameraman with the TV show Livin’ The Dream. Photo by Jimmy Nelson.
J
ust looking at a map will tell you the Sea of Cortez is a fish trap. Separated from the Pacific Ocean by Mexico’s nearly 800-mile long Baja California Peninsula, it’s a 62,000 square mile canyon that drops to depths approaching 10,000 feet. The sportfishing out of Cabo San Lucas, on the Peninsula’s southern tip is legendary. It is a bustling destination where marlin, sailfish and tuna abound. But Capt. Jimmy Nelson, host of the TV show Livin’ The Dream, pointed to a quieter destination and some awesome fishing up the Peninsula’s East Cape. Out of the Buena Vista Beach Resort about an hour’s drive north of Cabo, the Sea of Cortez drops to 1,000-foot depths just a few hundred yards off sand beaches. There’s a fleet of sportfishing boats waiting to take anglers offshore to chase all the big pelagics, and the inshore action borders on unbelievable. Even shorebased fishermen can catch some species typically associated with long runs offshore. At a place renowned for billfish, Nelson said the inshore action is as much of a reason to go as the marlin. “You never know what you’re going to get. There’s all kinds of things that will be right there on the edge,” Nelson said. “Roosterfish, African pompano, cubera snapper, Sierra mackerel, even dolphin, wahoo and yellowfin tuna will hit your popper right off the beach.” Never knowing what’s on the end of the line requires anglers to gear up. This is not the same as inshore fishing in the Gulf of Mexico or Atlantic. Nelson said casting 8-inch poppers or live lookdowns from shore is a ton of fun and requires 8000 size spinning reels. A big cubera snapper slamming your popper is a fight you’ll never forget. “It’s a rush,” he said. “You’re catching a bottomfish on top, so they go straight down to the bottom. You have to gear up with some pretty heavy tackle.” Trolling just off the beach is another tactic that puts anglers on a surprising array of the Pacific’s best sportfish. Big roosterfish might be primary target, but again, you never know what will eat when you’re pulling lookdowns and goggle eyes. Big yellowfin tuna have been known to surprise anglers just off the beaches, so 30 wide reels and heavy tackle are required. COASTALANGLERMAG.COM • THEANGLERMAG.COM
